ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis an exploration is made into whether or not hieroglyphs reflect ideas of the ancient Egyptians themselves. By examining "living creature" hieroglyphs one may contemplate why the ancient Egyptian chose a particular manner of depiction. The manner of depiction can then be examined insofar as what ideas they may reflect. In this way study into other groups of signs such as those of the environment may be used to further illuminate the lives and our understanding of the ancient Egyptian(s). This thesis begins with an examination of both the problem inherent in such a task and an overview of some of the "processes" involved. By understanding that a reconstructed reality, that of the hieroglyph, reflects both real and perceived characteristics represented in glyphic form, one may seek out the mental impressions considered relevant to the people themselves. Next the role literacy played and still plays is discussed. This discussion includes a brief historical overview of both the history of decipherment and the "language" of the ancient Egyptians. The importance of "writing", artistic in nature in Egypt in regards to hieroglyphs, is then discussed as it relates to its use as symbol. Hieroglyphs are then discussed in their role as art, communication, and language emphasizing the multitudinous role(s) which they served. The importance is thus reiterated that hieroglyphs served as a communication of ideas to both the literate and the "illiterate" in at least a menial manner. After providing a "background" context of both the world and time of hieroglyphs and their subsequent "understanding" and interpretation, there is an analysis of the hieroglyphs for living creatures including the following Gardiner groupings: (1) mammals, (2) birds, (3) amphibians and reptiles, (4) fish, (5) invertebrates and lesser animals. The signs are examined in regards to their function and variations followed by some observations and comments related to the "structure" and perspective of the sign itself. Summary observations and comments are then made about each group. The thesis is then brought full circle by examining the implications of what hieroglyphs can tell us about the ancient Egyptians, via the perceptive and communicative role which they played. By understanding hieroglyphs as "fingerprints" of/from the mind of the people and subsequently their culture, this framework may provide a new mechanism into understanding the Egyptian via their own visualization and perceptive nature. A case is then proposed that this new "mechanism", if it is indeed considered feasible, can be applied to not only the physical world consisting of nature such as the environment, but also to groups which depict manmade objects.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie tesis is die moontlikheid ondersoek dat hierogliewe iets van die ideewereld van die antieke Egiptenare reflekteer. In die bestudering van "lewende wese" hierogliewe kom vrae op soos waarom die antieke Egiptenare juis 'n spesifieke vorm van voorsteIIing verkies het. Die vorm van voorsteIIing kan dan bestudeer word vir die idees wat dit moontlik mag reflekteer. Ander groepe/velde van tekens, soos die van die breër omgewing, kan gebruik word om verdere lig te werp op die lewe van die antieke Egiptenaar(e) en ons verstaan daarvan. Die tesis begin met 'n bestudering van die inherente probleme in die aanpak van so 'n taak en 'n oorsig oor sommige van die "prosesse" daarby betrokke. Hierdie hierogliewe word ondersoek in terme van hulle funksie en variasies, gevolg deur waarnemings en opmerkings aangaande die "struktuur" en die perspektief van die teken. Opsommende observasies en enkele opmerkings oor elke groep volg daarna. The meaning of caregiving for a relative with mental illness has been explored in many research studies: however, there is a lack of studies on the caregiving experience within the Egyptian culture. This study aimed at getting closer to Egyptian families caring for a relative with mental illness in Australia in order to reveal how these families live and cope with mental illness, their attitudes, their beliefs and practices and how the experience affected them. Qualitative hermeneutic phenomenology informed by the work of Heidegger was used. Seven participants from Egyptian background, caring for a relative with mental illness participated and all interviews were audio-taped. Interviews were conducted in the Arabic language and were then translated and transcribed into English. All interviews were compared and five common themes were identified. Why did it happen?: How do I protect my loved ones?: What has it done to me?: What has it done to us?: and How do I survive? Findings of the study have the potential to raise health care professionals’ awareness of the needs of Egyptian families, their beliefs, values and coping with mental illness. Strengths and limitations of the study are also presented to inform future research

This study included a content analysis and audience study. It was carried out to investigate the question about the role of the mass media in the formation of Young Egyptians' images of foreign people and foreign countries. The content analysis was performed on a sample of foreign news in the daily newspaper al-Akhbar, radio and television news bulletins and current affairs programmes. From the content-analysis it was found that four main factors were influencing the coverage and selection of foreign news across the Egyptian mass media. Those are: the sources of foreign news, Egypt's relationships with other countries, cultural proximity and geographical proximity. In this concern, the findings support those from the interviews conducted with a sample of Egyptian journalists and broadcasters. It was also found that the images of foreign people and foreign countries portrayed in the mass media differed and that the above factors play a major role in these images. The audience study was carried out on a sample of young people (men and women), from the middle and working classes and two geographical areas (Cairo and Upper Egypt). Results of the survey showed that images of the respondents about foreign people and foreign countries differed across the above three variables. Generally speaking, it was found that these images, which change over time, were influenced to a great extent, by politics. They may also depend on the available sources of information and the sort of information received from these sources. The formation of these images is a complicated process which may be influenced by mass media as well as external non-media influences. Whatever the other influences, those of the mass media always remain strong as they were found to be the most important sources of information on foreign people and foreign countries.

This thesis is based upon ethnographic fieldwork carried out in and around three secondary schools and Tahrir Square in urban Cairo between October 2009 and December 2011. It explores the lives of young Egyptians at the time of their secondary schooling and the Arab spring through examining the contradictions and ambivalence of the coming of age for middle class young people inside the school and in the wider everyday life in urban Cairo. This thesis seeks to understand, by examining the social theory on the tension between structure and agency, the way through which disciplinarian interventions enable youth's articulation of critical dispositions and forms of resistance. This thesis, whilst it embarks by looking at the deterioration of the formal schooling system in Egypt after thirty years under Mubarak's rule, examines the extent to which the everyday educational studentship circumstances had constrained the sorts of subjects that Egyptian youth could become and which would constitute them as young and educated in contemporary Egypt. Whilst education, in its broader meaning, emerged as being undeniably crucial for young Egyptians' project for social mobility, secondary schools are presented not as venues for socialisation or reproduction of inequalities but rather as an ambivalent and contradictory resource. The young Egyptians who were the subjects of this thesis negotiated meritocratic aspirations at the intersections of their transversal educational circumstances, and the norms of patriarchy and subordination of their wider everyday life. The forms of exclusion and tension about the future have affected young Egyptians' articulation of their critical dispositions of hopelessness and ambivalence. Their engagement in the Tahrir riots and occupational actions and demanding their right to the city, manifested their emerging political consciousness and capacity to produce new spatial meanings and practices.

From the perspective of the Hebrew Bible the Egyptians represented the quintessential 'other' to the Israelites - lascivious, idolatrous, tyrannical, hostile and murderous. The biblical characterization of the Egyptians may be explained by the historical context in which early Israel emerged, a context in which Egypt represented a political, military and cultural threat to Israel's survival and distinctiveness, and in which the Israelites came to regard themselves as a covenanted people, in a unique and exclusive relationship with their God. This biblical perspective was inherited to some extent by the early Christian community, which according to the apostle Paul has been grafted into Israel's salvation history, and thus continued to associate the Egyptians with idolatry and base morality. The Islamic assessment of the ancient Egyptians, as presented particularly by the Qur'an, extra-canonical works and commentaries, and how it compares to biblical and extra-biblical views, is the subject of this study. Drawing on distinctions of covenanted and missionary identities as described in Anthony Smith's Chosen Peoples (2003), this thesis hypothesizes that the Qur'an and Islamic tradition with their pronounced missionary thrust present a rather different image of the 'other', particularly the Egyptians, given the historical context in which Islam emerged. This study presents a unique examination of the Egyptians in the Qur'an and extra-canonical texts as related through their encounters with the prophets Ibrahim, Yusuf, Musa and 'Isa. It combines a detailed exegetical and intertextual study of revelant Qur'anic verses with an analysis of extra-canonical texts such as the qisas al-anbiya' and traditions such as are found in al-Tabari's al-Ta'rikh al-rusul wa'l-muluk. Moreover, this thesis addresses historical, Egyptological and archaeological issues, and how the Qur'anic portrayals of the Egyptians in particular reflect the concerns and values of the early ummah, a community of believers which not only struggled to survive the hostilities of the Quraysh, but which sought to bring them and others to faith in the God of Ibrahim.

The research presented in this thesis applies Thomas Luckmann’s theory of invisible religion to three aspects of ancient Egyptian culture (festivals, household and personal items, and communication with the dead and with gods). The intention is firstly to address the four key issues that have arisen as a result of previous research into personal religion in ancient Egypt, secondly to determine whether ordinary ancient Egyptians possessed individual religiosity, and thirdly to establish whether the three aspects of ancient Egyptian culture considered can be viewed as examples of invisible religion. With regards to the four key issues, this research concludes: there was a link between individual religiosity and state religion; the intimacy of ordinary ancient Egyptians’ emotions relating to individual religiosity varied; individual religiosity was not a phenomenon of the lower classes; individual religiosity was not an innovation of the New Kingdom. In addition, it is shown that ordinary ancient Egyptians did possess individual religiosity but that each person would have created, maintained, engaged with, and internalised the universe of meaning (as described by Luckmann) to a different extent. Finally, this research concludes that the three aspects of ancient Egyptian culture considered can be viewed as examples of invisible religion.

Media have a part in defining the formative experiences of a generation, not only because they are so deeply embedded in the everyday practices as to become a “natural” element of its social landscape and its common sense, but also because historical events, as well as cultural values and their symbolic forms, are often mediated by them. It is what's happened with the “Arab Spring”, and the possibilities offered by ICT of being constantly connected with the countries of origin that led the second generations to a more conscious reflection on their identity and their “being transnational”. The thesis focuses on the outbreak of the Arab Spring and the importance of social networks in the relationships between Egypt and Egyptian second generations in Italy: were Egyptian second generations transnational actors or just spectators of what was happening in their country of origin? What were the factors that have influenced second generation transnationalism? Which new transnational practices and strategies have they developed? How digital media are interwoven in the (re)negotiation of affiliations and sense belonging?

Planning has lent legitimacy to the development of society through the application of different theories and practices. With its embodied concepts and values, planning influences the direction of change that a society may achieve. Given the great role that planning plays in shaping societies over long periods of time, in situations where it is planning knowledge that is subject to travel between nations, consideration of the context specificity is particularity essential. This thesis deals with the complex process of transferring collaborative planning knowledge to a different institutional and cultural context. The research adopts a proactive approach, examining the practical and theoretical potential imbued in a new context. It is argued, in this work, that an exogenous planning model has to be re-contextualized and landed in a new context through its assimilation with that context’s history and cultural values. The research focuses on Egypt and is directed towards understanding the specificities of the Egyptian institutional context and the cultural values inherited from the history of Egyptian society. The author’s interest lies in addressing the ways in which such an understanding can contribute to the development of collaborative planning knowledge. The research strategy is designed with reference to the cross-cultural transfer of knowledge and the study utilises an action research approach through which the author plays the dual role of practitioner and action researcher. Implementing collaborative planning in the Egyptian urban context of the city of Zifta provided a valuable opportunity to understand how planning knowledge may be transferred between different cultural contexts. The intellectual foundations for the collaborative principle is scrutinised, and complemented by an examination of Egyptian social philosophy. A conceptual framework for the joint development of knowledge in cross-cultural planning research is put forward, which derives from a combination of the practical and theoretical investigations carried out.

This research focuses on the study of Egyptian corn-mummies. The aim is to systematically record and analyse this class of objects in terms of form, decoration, representational theme, archaeological and cultural context, chronology and use. The present catalogue comprising 91 specimens (over 10 of which have not been previously studied) makes it possible to define the artefacts as mummiform objects, 35-50 cm long, made from a mixture of earth and grain, wrapped in resin-soaked linen bandages and often provided with Osirian wax mask and four small packages interpreted as the Sons of Horus. The mummies, identified as representation of Osiris, are commonly placed in decorated wooden falcon-headed coffins which are the main key for dating the objects to a period between the late Third Intermediate Period and the early Ptolemaic Period. Tehne, Meydum, El-Sheik Fadl, Tuna el-Gebel and Wady Qubbanet el-Qirud are the necropolises where the corn-mummies have been found. They have been chosen in view of the strong association of Orisis with the local cult. These data form the basis of the interpretation in the light of literary, pictorial and archaeological related evidence, associated religious beliefs and symbolic concepts. Corn-mummies illustrate the complex relationship between grain, embodying the idea of renewal as living substance whose life and death follows a cyclic pattern, and the notion of rejuvenation through the figure of Osiris. The sprouting of the grain represents a striking manifestation of the forces of rebirth and growth under the control of Osiris, the imperishable principle of life. It follows that the process of assembling grain and earth in the shape of Osiris ought to be considered not as a mere process of manufacturing grain packages but as a ritual involving the preservation of the cosmic cycle of death and rebirth, the maintenance of the Creative Order.

The subject of domestic architecture in ancient Egypt has attracted less attention than other aspects of Egyptian culture. The traditional approach to the study of ancient Egyptian houses has been formal and largely focused on the site of Amarna, and context and material have not been actively integrated into the study of ancient Egyptian domestic architecture. Moreover, a methodology for the study of ancient Egyptian mudbrick houses has never been developed. Thus, the aim of this research is to develop a methodology for the recording, analysis and interpretation of ancient Egyptian house remains. For that purpose, this research has adopted a broad theoretical approach, which includes the consideration of universal interaction, contextual and material factors. Its main objective was to carry out an ethnoarchaeological study in order to further explore the associations between humans and buildings and their physical reflection on the house (material and distribution and use of space). Through the collection of interviews, architectural surveys and observation data in three different areas of modern Egypt – the Nile Delta, Upper Egypt and the Dakhleh Oasis – a series of categories were developed and key concepts for interpretation identified. These were applied to a number of archaeological sites across different areas and periods of ancient Egyptian history. The application of the modern data categories and concepts to the archaeological data allowed for the identification of a series of key variables responsible for architectural features and for distribution and use of space within the house. These were articulated into a methodology that, it is expected, will provide a standard means of recording, analysis and interpretation of ancient Egyptian mudbrick houses in the future.

“The Ancient Egyptian Demonology Project: Second Millennium BCE” was intended and funded as a three-year project (2013-2016) to explore the world of Ancient Egyptian demons in the 2nd millennium BC. It intends to create a classification and ontology of benevolent and malevolent demons. Whereas ancient Egyptians did not use a specific term denoting “demons”, liminal beings known from various other cultures such as δαίμονες, ghosts, angels, Mischwesen, genies, etc., were nevertheless described in texts and illustrations. The project aims to collect philological, iconographical and archaeological evidence to understand the religious beliefs, practices, interactions and knowledge not only of the ancient Egyptians’ daily life but also their perception of the afterlife. Till today scholars, as well as interested laymen, have had no resource to consult for specific examples of those beings, except for rather general encyclopaedias that include all kinds of divine beings or the Iconography of Deities and Demons (IDD) project that is ongoing. Neither provides, however, a searchable platform for both texts and images. The database created by the Demonology Project: 2K is designed to remedy this gap. The idea is to provide scholars and the public with a database that allows statistical analyses and innovative data visualisation, accessible and augmentable from all over the world to stimulate the dialogue and open communication not only within Egyptology but also with neighbouring disciplines. For the time-span of the three year project a pilot database was planned as a foundation for further data-collection and analysis. The data that were chosen date to the 2nd Millennium BCE and originate from objects of daily life (headrests and ivory wands), as well as from objects related to the afterlife, (coffins and ‘Book of the Dead’ manuscripts). This material, connected by its religious purposes, nevertheless provides a cross-section through ancient Egyptian religious practice. The project is funded by the Leverhulme Trust and includes Kasia Szpakowska (director) who supervises the work of the two participating PhD students in Egyptology. The project does not include funds for computer scientists or specialists in digital humanities. Therefore, the database is designed, developed and input by the members of the team only. The focus of my presentation will be the structure of the database that faces the challenge to include both textual and iconographical evidence. I will explain the organisation of the data, search patterns and the opportunities of their visualisation and possible research outcome. Furthermore, I will discuss the potentials the database already possesses and might generate in the future for scholars and the public likewise. Since the evidence belongs to numerous collections from all over the world, I would like to address the problems of intellectual property and copyright with the solution we pursue for releasing the database for registered usage onto the internet.

The Egyptian mummy poses something of a conundrum to researchers in museum studies. The mummy is familiar, and yet the history of its insertion into European culture and scientific Egyptology remains largely unmapped. In recent decades, human remains have entered conversations regarding their retention and display in museums. The Egyptian mummy had been largely ignored until, recently, several museums removed some specimens from display. The question remains: how can museums negotiate the Egyptian mummy, both object and human remains? This thesis examines the cultures of participation with Egyptian mummies in London and Paris between 1753 and 1858, with a view to understanding who collected and studied these objects, and what they meant to them. This research produces a cultural history which grounds stories of encounters and engagements with Egyptian mummies within their contemporary intellectual and cultural contexts. It contends that a cultural history of the Egyptian mummy is an ethical lens to look at the mummy as a category of object that poses a set of questions. This thesis argues that the Egyptian mummy was a multi-faceted object, embedded in cultural and intellectual debates, on collecting, the body, and race. This thesis re-evaluates physical interventions on mummies (including dissections and unrollings) and argues that these practices must be considered within their wider contexts. This thesis contributes a new lens to look at the Egyptian mummy in contexts, and in doing so, offers a new interpretation of the mummy as a cultural object. This historical research allows further reflection on the presence of human remains in museums, and contends that museums can only assess the value, responsibility, and ethics of their Egyptian human remains collections through an in-depth study of the history of modern engagements with the Egyptian mummy – as both object and human remains.

The main objective of this thesis is to estimate and evaluate the impact of the Egyptian petroleum sector on the Egyptian economy during the period 1962-1982 within both micro and macro-economic approaches. On the basis of the empirical findings of the study, the oil sector comes out fairly well as a good leading sector in the Egyptian economy. The study has also revealed that the domestic consumption of oil has dramatically increased at a high rate of growth as well as the oil production/reserves ratio is relatively high in Egypt comparing to a country which has a huge amount of oil reserves. Considering the above three facts, Egypt can face the following problems: 1) The uncertainty of oil discovery and 2) The gains in the terms of trade are limited due to the decrease or the slight increase in oil prices. In this case, it can be anticipated not only the impact of the oil sector to fall but also Egypt can be expected to be a net oil importer in the very near future. Therefore, the study has investigated both oil demand and oil supply sides in Egypt in order to determine the main factors which affect them and which in turn affect the role of the oil sector in the economy in an attempt to reach some policy recommendations which might help policy makers in planning and controlling petroleum activities in Egypt in such a way that their contributions can be maximized. On the basis of such investigation, it has been concluded that reconsidering the domestic pricing policy of oil in Egypt is very crucial in order to decrease and rationalize domestic oil consumption in particular the analysis of the subsidy system of petroleum products in Egypt has revealed that the system has not achieved its main goals. Examining the main determinants of oil supply in Egypt, it seems very important to intensify investment in oil exploration activities in order to secure and increase oil reserves and which in turn lead to secure oil supply. Also, it seems reasonable that the relatively optimal policy of oil production in a country at a stage of rebuilding and developing her economy such as Egypt is that policy which produces on a level sufficient to be exchanged for a financial resource and which in turn could be invested in capital formation and thus developing the basic productive sectors. Such policy is thus taking account of future generations by directing oil revenues to future welfare through investment channels.

The Egyptian Revolution 2011 created a space and opportunity to forward important demands concerning different social and political issues, amongst these matters related to women's status and situations in the society. Feminist and women's rights proponents in Egypt conceptualize the aims of a feminist or women's rights agenda as (women's) human rights and citizen's rights, independence, freedom and choice, though such universal concepts are understood in accordance with particular cultural or individual contexts. Feminist struggles must be seen in the cultural and social environment in which they take place in order to be properly understood. Feminist struggles in Egypt takes place in an overarching religious context. Religion constitutes a source of legitimacy in the Egyptian society and feminist activists appropriate religious language to pose their political demands and to make them comprehensible at a local level. Feminist demands are generally brought forward strategically, in order to achieve acceptance and enhance cultural legitimacy. A patriarchal culture is perceived as the main obstacle to advance women's status and situations. For that reason, addressing and changing that patriarchal culture is seen as the main objective for feminist struggles. Individual agency is highlighted in this respect. The interest and responsibility of securing and forwarding women's rights is mainly perceived to lay in the hands of feminist activists and women's rights groups themselves. The Egyptian Revolution was an outcome of individual and collective agency. In the revolution, women may have enacted more of a public agency than an individual agency to realize their interests. During the revolution women transcended gender roles and exposed some images of women as stereotypes. The Egyptian Revolution broke a barrier of fear in the society and invoked in men and women a sense of dignity and rights. The post-revolutionary public and political discourse constituted a backlash for women's rights, but it may also have produced a renewed interest for feminist struggles and women's rights. After the revolution, the participation in the society may have increased and men and women might not be as easily intimidated as before.

This study presents mitochondrial genome sequences from 22 Egyptian house cats with the aim of resolving the uncertain origin of the contemporary world-wide population of Domestic cats. Together with data from earlier studies it has been possible to confirm some of the previously suggested haplotype identifications and phylogeny of the Domestic cat lineage. Moreover, by applying a molecular clock, it is proposed that the Domestic cat lineage has experienced several expansions representing domestication and/or breeding in pre-historical and historical times, seemingly in concordance with theories of a domestication origin in the Neolithic Middle East and in Pharaonic Egypt. In addition, the present study also demonstrates the possibility of retrieving long polynucleotide sequences from hair shafts and a time-efficient way to amplify a complete feline mitochondrial genome.

The Roman Aqaba Project, an archaeological investigation of a Roman port on the Red Sea in southern Jordan, recovered over 500 sherds of Egyptian Red Slip Ware (ERS). This included both ERS A (presumably from the Aswan region of Upper Egypt) and ERS B (from various production centers along the Nile valley). ERS was the second most common imported fine ware found at Aila from the Late Roman and Byzantine periods (3rd through early 7th centuries A.D.), trailing far behind African Red Slip Ware (from Tunisia) but easily exceeding imports of Cypriote Red Slip and Phocaean Red Slip (from the Aegean). The most striking fact about the ERS at Aila is its chronological distribution. In most parts of Palestine and Jordan ERS appears in quantity only in the late 6th and 7th centuries. But at Aila both ERS A and ERS B wares begin appearing in securely attested 3rd century contexts and are most common in the 4th century, long before their appearance in the remainder of the Levant, generally in late 6th and 7th centuries.

In 1996, the Egyptian government, through the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP) introduced the Egyptian Health Sector Reform Programme (EHSRP).  It was stated that the EHSRP was introduced to overcome problems of the Egyptian health care system including issues with health outcomes, access, efficiency, quality, and clinical effectiveness and consumer satisfaction (MOHP, 2003). The MOHP piloted the EHSRP in three governorates: Monofia; Alexandria; and Sohag.  Based on piloting results, the intention is to roll-out the EHSRP to other governorates.  Actual implementation of reform in pilot governorates did not start until 2000/2001 due to delay in the preparation of action plans (Master Plans). The first stage of the EHSRP focused on improving the quality of PHC services (MOHP, 2003).  The EHSRP aims to introduce the Family Medicine Approach (FMA) that relies on the Family Doctor (FD).  Financing health sector reform in Egypt is supported by a number of foreign donors including: the World Bank; the European Commission (EC); the United States Agency for International Development (USAID); and the African Development Bank (ADB). The study aimed to explore motivations for and attitudes to health care reform in Egypt, to explore the change process and make suggestions about enhancements and improvements.  A qualitative research strategy was employed using a multiple-embedded case approach.  Studying reform implementation in the pilot governorates suggested that implementation of the FHM was associated with many challenges and difficulties.  This makes it essential to look for possible solutions to improve the implementation of FHM.  Other implementation problems were related to the management level and communication between different stakeholders.

Since 2011, Egypt has been in a state of chaos and instability. During this time women have suffered disproportionality in comparison to their male counterparts. However, the poor state of affairs for women did not begin after 2011; while women have slowly gained more rights during the last decade, Egypt’s commitment to gender equality has always fallen short. This paper investigates the current state of affairs for women’s rights in Egypt, especially in wake of the 2011 Revolution, and asserts that the poor quality of women’s rights is a result of a battle for power between the military and Islamic politicians, specifically the Muslim Brotherhood. It then analyzes the possibility of a better future for Egypt through an examination of Turkey because it is a secular Islamic state, which has recently reduced military power and increased democratic inclusion in politics. Ultimately, the potential for dramatic improvement in women’s rights in Egypt would necessitate a significant cultural shift, as well as greater inclusion in government—both of which are unlikely given the current state of Egyptian culture and politics.

This thesis is divided into weapons and armour categories. Each section deals with weapons in the following way. It looks at the materials used in the manufacturing of weapons evidently used by soldiers in artistic representations. In this way, where possible, I have attempted to trace their provenance through excavation reports. Secondly, where appropriate, there is an examination of religious or social elements regarding military images. Here, I have established a description and directory of all artistic representations of armed soldiers, and have included a comparative study of material remains. The thesis is divided into the following sections. Metallic, leather and linen body armour, shields, breastplates and helmets. Short-range, or shock weapons, that include swords, axes, mace, and staves. Projectiles, or mid to long-range weapons, such as the bow, arrows, spears, javelins and throwsticks. An additional section involves the use of the bow-box and quiver. The second volume includes photographic evidence, namely, representations I have examined among museum collections, which include temple reliefs and other military artefacts. The sections are arranged to provide a clear and cohesive system of reference. Each is clearly restricted to a particular weapon or armour category, however, the author highlights the points at which cross references become necessary.

Three longitudinal case studies were conducted to investigate developmental language impairment (1)1.1) in Egyptian Arabic (EA). While there have been descriptions of adult acquired aphasic deficits in Arabic, this study details the linguistic characteristics of children with impairments specific to language. To select the subjects, an exclusionary checklist was used based on the criteria used for specific language impairment (SLI, Ixronard, 1998). The subjects consisted of two males and one female, first seen at less than 5 (X) years and recorded longitudinally (21 -36 months). Data from 12 normally developing children, aged between 1 00 4,04 years, was also collected for comparative purposes and to detail normal developmental errors in EA. Patterns of language impairment and development were investigated using spontaneous language measures and specific structured tasks. The language samples were phonetically transcribed from video tapes during non-directive therapy and parent child play sessions. The spontaneous language measures included, Mean Morphemes per Unit (MPU), percent structural errors, functional analysis of utterances and an error analysis of specific grammatical morphemes. 'Ihe three EA-DLI children shared similar patterns of errors although cognitively they had different strengths. 'Their patterns of impairment reflected primarily morpho-syntactic difficulties. Many of the linguistic characteristics observed in the EA-DLI children's language were also produced by the controls, but less frequendy. The EA-DLI children's MPUs were found to be restricted with higher percentages of morphological errors than the language matched controls. An unmarked default verb form resembling the Imperfective-stem was a frequent substitution error. The functional analysis revealed that the EA-DLI children were similar to the controls in their use of requests and labels, however they produced more Learnt Repetitive phrases and disordered sentences and fewer Intravcrbals due to their difficulties with abstract verbal reasoning. 'ihe difficulties described in this study compnse of some linguistic features specific to EA and other features that have been reported in cross-linguistic studies of SLI. The shared features included difficulty with grammatical morphology, lack of master)' at expected developmental stages and limited use of inflectional morphology leading to agreement errors. Verbs were difficult, percentages of errors were high and fewer verbs were produced than nouns. In contrast to the findings of SLI in other languages Tense and Aspectual marking was not problematic, but difficulty was with subject verb agreement for gender, number and person. Prepositions, pronouns, plurals and negative particles were either omitted or substituted resulting in error patterns. The grammatical theories developed to account for SLI reported in English, German and Swedish (Hakansson et al., 2003 Clahsen and Hansen, 1997 van der Lely, 2002) were judged against the evidence acquired in this study on the three EA-DLI children. The limitations of these theories are discussed and alternative interpretations are provided.

The negotiation process (NP) is the process by which two or more negotiation parties try to achieve a mutual agreement. The negotiation strategy selection (NSS) is an important part in this process. As the proportion of the international to domestic trade increased in recent years so the frequency of the negotiation processes between people from different countries and cultures increased. Most of the relevant studies in the negotiation field focussed on NP generally and a very few of these studies focussed on the negotiation strategy (NS). There are many factors that influence NSS but from the relevant studies in the negotiation field there was no study focussed on the internal factors that influence NSS especially in multinational enterprises. Therefore, this study focussed on NS in multinational enterprises generally and Egyptian Multinational Enterprises (EME) specifically. The study. aimed to (i) Identify the concepts ofNPand NS. (ii) Identify the main types of NS and the negotiation tactics (NT). (iii) Identify the internal factors that influence NSS. This was undertaken with EME as a survey study, and Aea Brown Boveri (ABB) as a case study. ' j • This study' showed that there was arelative understanding in the perceptions of the managers in EME and ABB regarding the concepts of NP and NS and the main types of NS and NT. Also, their understanding regarding the concepts of NS was closer to the literature views than their understanding regarding the concepts ofNP. Further, there was a difference between the literature views and the managers' views in EME and ABB regarding the internal factors that influence NSS ..Finally, there was a difference between the managers' views in E:ME·and ABB 'regarding the concepts of NP and NS; the main types ofNS and NT and the importance rate (IR)"and the dependence rate (DR) of the internal factors that influence NSS.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis has sought to assemble and evaluate a comprehensive corpus of texts and secondary material relating to the fauna of ancient Egypt. It is in the first instance a philological study, using as a starting point the Wörterbuch der ägyptischen Sprache produced in the 1920$ and '30s., though evidence from archaeological and representational material has been included where appropriate. Previous work in this field has been sporadic and of varying quality. Much of it is not recent or is based on older reference sources. It therefore seemed appropriate to attempt a compilation and updating of existing studies. Much effort has been put into using recent zoological works to provide lists of species from modern Egypt with which to compare both the ancient records and the taxonomic information given in other Egyptological studies. The thesis is divided into 20 chapters. The first examines, by way of introduction to the rest of the study, aspects of zoological classification in ancient Egypt, making comparisons with work carried out by anthropologists on classificatory systems used by modern 'primitive' cultures. The remainder of the thesis is divided into three parts. The first, comprising chapters 2 to 14, examines the names given by the ancient Egyptians to various mammals; each chapter discusses a certain group of mammals (eg Cattle; Dogs and Similar Animals; Lions and Other Cats). The second part, comprising chapters 15 to 17, concerns birds. Part three comprises chapters 18 to 20 on fish, reptiles and amphibians, and insects respectively. The advantage of this type of study lies in the avoidance of translations formulated in isolation from related material. Altogether some 600 animal names, spanning c. 3000 to 500 BC, have been discussed; a number of previous translations have been revised and many new or more precise translations suggested.
