Essertel, Yannick. "Lyon et les missions lointaines à l'époque contemporaine : 1815-1962". Lyon 3, 1994. http://www.theses.fr/1994LYO31002.
Testo completoThis study of the missionary role of the lyon diocese is based on a sample of about two thousand lyon missionaries and their works, the first part deals with the missionaries in their background, a study mainly based on statistics. The missionaries born in the lyon diocese (i. D. Departements of the rhone and loire) are set back and studied in their geographical, spiritual and cultural contexts. Thers, the elements which enabled the start of vocations in this diocese clearly stand out. This part ends with a presentation of the evolution of the departure curve throughout time (from 1815 to 1962) and with a study of life expectancy which reveals the existence of a missionary demography. The second part is an essay about the missionaries' typology which varies according to their main activities. Once classified in the geographical area where used to work, it was made possible to underline the contribution of the lyon missionaries to the conversion to christianity and to point out their role is the evolution of methods of evangelization

Testo completoThe Catholic Church was from the start quite proactive in the way it tackled the tremendous growth in population in major cities which characterised post-war France. The example of the city of Lyon is particularly interesting as it showcases a large variety of different head-on initiatives to bring urbanization under control. Indeed, the beginning of the 1950’s saw the birth of a totally new idea of town planning coming from a variety of different movements such as Economie et Humanisme, expansion committee, diocese-related associations. These endeavours when brought together proved that the Catholic community had gained urban expertise as far as housing, regional planning and town planning were concerned.Meanwhile a vast survey into religious practices and a number of land modifications showed that people at the archbishop’s palace had a firmer grasp on the specificity of the city of Lyon within the diocese. From the late 1950’s to the early 1970’s building new places of worship became a priority for the religious authorities. 1957saw the creation of both a sociology Institute at the Catholic University and a diocesan new parish council the aim of which was to secure financing, to stimulate worshippers’ mobilisation and to spot the best possible locations for the new churches. From the mid-sixties onwards urban growth took centre stage (journals, congresses, roman declarations) as the Catholic Church realised both its scale and its impact on society. This sparked up numerous attempts at setting up an urban pastoral in Lyon. During the 1970’s the diocese’s church-building plan started losing momentum and the Catholic Church found a more secular activism in the defence of city dwellers’ struggles for a better living environment

Testo completoReverend father aupiais (1877-1945) from the society of african missions in lyon lived for 23 years in dahomey (1903-1926). The interest he showed in the local population that he wanted to convert was a break away from the usual practices of the vast majority of his predecessors. Our thesis aims at exploring the thought and work of the father and ascertaining the way they concur with the ideology of "africanism" as first elaborated by maurice delafosse who was aupiais's spiritual guide. He gathered a collection of objects d'art which were exhibited when he returned to france in 1926. Then he passionately followed marcel mauss's "learned teachings" at the institute of ethnology in order to gain a scientific method but he soon departed from it, judging it "inordinately sociological". He then became more involved with the group of missionaries who, in louvain, recommended the necessity of a new apostolitic approach of the native people, a "missiologie" enlightened by ethnological data. In 1929-1930, for the sake of albert kahn, he made two films, "le dahomey chretien" and "le dahomey religieux", as well as a series of magnificent "autochromes" (colour films). Thanks to our thesis, those documents have been restored. Futhermore, our thesis sets out to analyse the significance as well as the historical and ethnographical interest of the most pertinent scenes from the two films. As far as the "autochromes" are concerned - they have been selected and reproduced in the thesis itself - their contents has systematically been explored. Moreover, whenever necessary, the reproduction of photograms (picture pauses) has been included in order to highlight the ethnographical approach. Aupiais was also the untiring supporter of an african ethnology originated from the local people themselves, an "africanisme du dedans" (africanism from within). In 1925, he launched the modest journal, "la reconnaissance africaine", and promoted the work of paul hazoume, the first dahomean writer, considered by aupiais as his spiritual son. A militant of social catholicism, between 1927 and 1931, he courageously became involved and actively denunciated forced labour in the colonies, which caused him a great many setbacks within his own society of missionaries and which was to bring about his exile, directed by his superiors, to a small apostolic school in the landes region

Testo completoControlled by the king, the territorial princes or the local lords, the episcopal sees of the ecclesiastical province of Bourges are all allocated, from the middle of the Xth to the late XIth century, to members of aristocracy : co-option, favour and buying are the main ways to obtain episcopal dignity. This seigneurial influence impede the birth of a provincial identity, that only appears during the Peace of God and the Church reformation mouvements, in which bishops are deeply involved. However, this is the pontifical reformation in the middle of the XIth century that gives a real importance to the ecclesiastical reformation in the province. It contributes to the restoration of legality in episcopal election and to the emergence of a Gregorian episcopate devoted to the Holy See. The recruitment, on the other hand, hardly changes : from the beginning to the end of the period, the prelates, chosen in the local seigneurial class, are competent men qualified for their episcopal office

Testo completoDuring the Late Medieval Period, relics are a very common object in the Christian World and in urban churches. Protestant criticisms and destructions during the 16th century were a first crisis ended by a catholic reinvestment. These disruptions transformed relics into a more rational object, with systematic inventories and new localisations inside churches. Until French Revolution, churches of Lyon, Metz, Rouen and Toulouse received countless relics, mostly from Rome, to support the foundation of new urban convents. Laymen and clerics gave relics to improve their social and religious status. Ceremonies of translation showed a Catholicism that had triumphed again. Some relics got an identity and heritage value. They became the protectors of the city with a specific relationship between citizens and the Divine world. These relics are often used during urban crises like epidemics, natural disasters and political crisis. The History of the towns also used relics as evidence and illustration of urban Sanctity. These links became slack during the 18th century because of historical and philosophical criticisms. French Revolution confirmed this evolution, despite attempts of sacral remediation. From Christian objects, relics became confessional objects and from the beginning of the 19th century onwards, militant objects

Testo completoThe goal of this research is to study how the church of Quebec received the teaching of Vatican II on the synodality of the local church. An examination of reception as such provides the methodological foundation of the study. The second part presents the theology of the local church articulated by Vatican II (a communion of persons of different conditions and functions); studies the source of its "order" (its synodality); elaborates a heuristic model of its functioning (the celebration of the Eucharist) and exposes the institutional forms presented by the codex of 1983 for the practical implementation of this synodal right. The third major section presents the church of Quebec as a subject of reception. A social-historical study of this local church is followed by a highly detailed analysis of the way this church is governed between 1982 and 1987. It is on the basis of these considerations that the reception of the teaching of Vatican in the Quebec’s diocese is interpreted

Testo completoPierre-Marie Gerlier is united with the diocese of Lyon whose he was in charge of about thirty years between I937 and I965. Especially during the Second World war he had to take position in front of the Government of French State, Shoah and Resistance. This darkened years brought about him friendships and, also, charges. Astonishing, he's the symbol of episcopacy in spiritual resistance and too the symbol of representative of compromised catholics. This man was particulary an integral catholic engaged since I902 in the French Youth catholic Association for better living conditions, militant for the papal thinking result of Rerum novarum, guided to the apostolate, advocate of an ostentatious Church in a republican and secular nation, protagonist of a religion based on a personal devotion, sacrament of the eucharist and marian piety. Became priest, Pierre-Marie Gerlier, in his different assignments (direction of Christians' Associations in Paris- I921 to I929-, Bishop of Tarbes and Lourdes- I929-I937-, Archbishop of Lyon) declare this catholic thinking with conviction and declamatory talent. Certainly the integral Roman Catholicism establishes his positions before, during and after the war

The process of secularization in Quebec during the 1960s changed people’s relation to religion, notably catholicism. Though this period is one of the most significant regarding religious transformation, this fact is often forgotten. Each new generation which enters adulthood is more and more secularized. Young people do not necessarily experience catholicism in its institutionalized forms or on a daily basis. This reality has had a major impact on the religious heritage and social fabric of Quebec society. How do young people experience religion, and does it give meaning to their lives? How do they relate to catholicism and its institutions? This research explores the forms of religious imagination experienced by young people of contemporary Quebec. Empirical data culled from interviews with young adults between the ages of 18 and 29, and participatory observations of their activities form the basis of the research. Youth culture, beliefs, values and their rapport with catholicism constitute the topics explored. A close analysis of the data highlights the dynamics between the religious imagination of individuals and their society and culture immersed in consumerism. This research also focuses on the epistemological link between the study of religion and the discipline of sociology.

Testo completoIn 1822, the Church of France was carrying on with the re-establishement of its dioceses while, at the same time, prelates from America were scouring the country looking for financial aids. It was an underground Lyons-based Congregation of pity having special ties with these foreign priests who took upon itself to meet their needs setting up the Society Propagation of the Faith. A wide-scale donation system was set up known as the "missions weekly offering", instigated by Pauline Jaricot. In no time at all, the affluent Association was in a position to finance the general expansion of the catholic religion throughout the world. Although it was a non-religious association, it needed the approval of Rome. From then on, its future development in the course of the century had to take into account the growing missionary interest of Rome. At a local level (Lyons) the study shows how dependent the Society was on the ecclesiastic management in the parishes, but it also evaluates the religious vitality of a micro society made up of royalist notables. This was how the missionary Association was able to integrate a complex process of social identification. Moreover, compiling and the distribution of morally-enlightening works (such as Annals, Catholic missions, and so on) gave the laymen the power to stage-manage the Mission and to control its productions, when the allotment of various missions around the globe concerning the collection of funds guaranteed them a real influence on the Churches overseas. The study also highlights their determination to extend their influence over all the catholic universe. Yet, the history of missionary life reports that at precisely the same moment procedures for papal centralisation and the clericalisation of the ecclesiastical system were being intensified. Finally, in 1922, owing to the transfer of the management of the Association to Rome, under the supervision of the De Propaganda Fide Congregation, the demands for autonomy made by the Lyons notables were put to a stop and this wiped out their influence on the missionary process

Testo completoSocial and economic changes in recent decades have radically transformed the realities of young adult life. These changes led the student ministry Power to Change at Université Laval to reevaluate its context and its methods in order to better reach Québécois students. The result of these reflections was to found an intentional community (called Le Voisinage, or “The Neighbourhood”) in a student quarter of Quebec City, where Christian young adults decided to move together, integrating life, faith, and mission in their milieu. This study seeks to lay a missiological foundation for this community via a deep investigation of its context and by putting the community in dialogue with a movement of evangelical intentional communities, The New Monasticism. The contextual part of this study asks two questions: in what context was Power to Change founded, and in what ways did this context lead to methods and ways of thinking thinking that are either no longer pertinent, or even distortions of the Christian mission? We argue that a ministry dedicated exclusively to evangelism and discipleship is only relevant in a highly christianized context, and that the Church Growth Theology that we have inherited is patterned after the imaginary of consumer society. As a result, this missiology engages in the dynamics of consumerism and proves harmful both for young adults and for the Church. We finish by evaluating how neo-monastic missiology, based on the idea of the Church as a community of witness, and its expanded perspective of the Kingdom of God can balance a missiology centered on evangelism and individual salvation. A balanced missiology and a balanced practice can thus help the community Le Voisinage better serve students who are facing the pressures of consumer society.

Testo completoThis dissertation offers elements of a response to the question of "how to organize church in small rural parishes today. " Three periods in the history of parochial networking in the diocese of Rimouski are first identified and analyzed. In the periods from 1867-1891 and 1928-1950, we find two different dynamics which lead to the foundation of small parishes in the rural milieu: the recognition of a stable community and the support for a colonization effort in the context of economic crisis. The period from 1968-2000 presents, on the other hand, a dynamic of struggle for the survival of small parishes faced with diminishing populations. In each instance, the ideal of Christian society is sought within the framework of parish. Three ecclesiological marks are identified in view of reshaping parishes. These three marks-structured communion, fraternity-solidarity, hope-involvement-reveal much about Christian life in a parochial milieu and are suggestive of a new and motivating pastoral project

Testo completoThe Catholic Church states that any Christian initiation should take as a model the process proposed for adults : the catechumenate. This thesis first situates the issue of Christian initiation in Québec today. It proposes an analysis of the different concepts involved, including the concept of “model”. Then, going through the history of the catechumenate in order to show the links between the main principles of the catechumenate of the first centuries and those that guided its restoration by the Second Vatican Council, it underlines the essential elements of a catechumenal process, and thus what should be present in every initiation process. A sociological reflection follows, examining the admissibility within today’s socioreligious context, of a new Christian initiation process. This leads to the formulation of some propositions concerning the global structure and the guiding principles of a renewed process for Christian initiation that would be clearly inspired by the essential elements of the catechumenate.
