Abstract (sommario):
This article draws on interviews with key personnel and archival material to offer insight into the translation of and publishing issues in the Good News Bible. The New Testament was published by the American Bible Society (ABS) in 1966 as Good News for Modern Man: The New Testament in Today’s English. The success of the translation led to a decision to undertake the Old Testament. The ABS translation committee and board reviewed the OT drafts extensively, a process which often put them in conflict with the translators. The article will discuss key decisions taken by ABS. Some, for example the cover and artwork of the New Testament, were successful. Others, for example the marketing plan for the Old Testament, proved to be less so.

Abstract (sommario):
The article’s purpose is to highlight the history of the Podillia branch of the Russian Bible Society (RBS), which extended its activities from Kamianets-Podilskyi not only to Podillia province but also to Bessarabia and Moldova. In the appendix to the article, two documents stating the involvement of the Podilia branch in the international affairs of the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS) are published. The methodological basis of the article is the principles of historicism, objectivity, complexity and systematicity, as well as the methods of archival heuristics and source studies. The scientific novelty consists in the primary study of the activity of the Podillia branch in the international context, not as a structural unit of the RBS, but as one of the branches of the BFBS. Conclusions. The Podillia branch was one of the most numerous societies and the most powerful in terms of the scope of its activities. It had its own specifics, directly related to the ethnic and religious composition of the population of Podillia. It distributed the majority of the Holy Scriptures in Polish, as well as in Slavic and Hebrew languages since native speakers of these languages were predominant in the region. The branch was in contact not only with the St. Petersburg and Moscow RBS committees, but also with the Polish Bible Society, branches functioning in Belarusian cities, and BFBS missionaries. Receiving reports of other foreign branches of the BFBS, the members of the Podillia branch felt like participants of the worldwide community of Bible fans (Bible Union). A significant role belonged to missionary Robert Pinkerton who supported the Podillia Branch Committee on behalf of BFBS. It was inspired by the successes of the BFBS and its branches in Great Britain, France, Denmark, Sweden, Prussia, Poland and Germany, India, China, Persia, Turkey, African countries and tribes, including Ethiopia, North America, as well as all provinces of the Russian Empire.

Abstract (sommario):
As an undergraduate, Gladstone was enchanted by the preaching of Richard Sibthorp, but was unsure whether he could be trusted as a sound guide. So in December 1829 he wrote to his theological mentor, Edward Craig, an episcopal minister in Edinburgh, seeking an opinion. In reply, Craig described Sibthorp as a ‘very judicious man.’ Few would have dissented. At a time of major divisions in the Protestant religious world, Sibthorp had established a reputation as a conciliator. In 1827, when the British and Foreign Bible Society was being torn apart by the Apocryphal controversy, he had been trusted by both sides to visit the Continent and report on adherence to the Society's revised rules. In the same year, he became Clerical Secretary of the Religious Tract Society, an office he held until 1836. In an inter-denominational Society, disputes over what should be published were constantly threatening to boil over and Sibthorp played no small part in ensuring that it did not suffer the convulsions that almost wrecked the B.F.B.S.

Abstract (sommario):
An increase in global immigration has resulted in humanitarian crises across the world as countries struggle to respond to the growing number of refugees and asylum seekers arriving at their borders. Understanding the specific messages within the Hebrew Bible regarding immigrants is important for developing faith-informed responses to immigrants and refugees. Religion often influences people’s beliefs, actions, and even the policy decisions for which they advocate, and the various forms of Christianity practiced in the United States frequently use the Hebrew Bible and New Testament as their sacred instructive texts. A detailed study of relevant portions of the Hebrew Bible, coupled with analysis of biblical commentaries and scholarly criticism, suggests that the Bible underscores the imperative to care for the most vulnerable members of society, as well as to include immigrants in the community. Arguably, people of faith should take this overarching message into account when considering how to respond to immigrants’ arrival in the United States. Note to the Reader: The books of the Bible were originally written in biblical Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek, depending on the time period in which each book was redacted. Because I do not read biblical Hebrew, all biblical passages quoted in this thesis are from the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) of the Hebrew Bible. The NRSV is regarded as one of the most accurate and reputable recent English translations of the Bible because it was completed by a committee of biblical scholars. My thesis advisor, Professor Deborah Green, checked the verses cited herein for accuracy against the original biblical Hebrew text and provided corrections to the translation where necessary. Verses that have been corrected from the original NRSV translation are footnoted. Unless otherwise noted, all other verses are from the NRSV translation.

Abstract (sommario):
The article on the basis of documentary materials for the first time presents the main steps in the history of the Mari translations of the gospel in the Vyatka province in the light of the activities of the Russian Bible society. The translations were started in December 1820 on the initiative of the leadership of the Vyatka diocese and were carried out by the parish clergy in two counties: in Yaransk the gospel of Matthew was translated, whereas in Urzhumsky the gospel of Mark. The Yaranskiy translation was made in 1821 by S. Bobrovsky, who was a priest in the village Pizhemskоya; the Urzhumskiy translation was completed in 1822, and performed in parts by multiple translators, including the priests K. Ushnurski from the village Toral and A. Popov from the village Yuledur. Both translations were sent for consideration to the metropolitan Committee of the Bible society in early July 1823. The article provides brief biographical information of the translators. In addition, an idea is given of the attempts undertaken in the Vyatka diocese to use translations of Christian texts into the Mari language made outside of the region. In particular, in 1820-1821, a translation of the Liturgy of John Chrysostom was tested in parishes with the Mari population, and in 1824, a suitability test began for the Vyatka Mari people of translations of the Gospel made in Kazan.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper introduces a previously unstudied manuscript, “Opyt perevoda vetkhozavetnykh knig [. . .] Mikhailom Fotinskim” (1806). In this article, we analyze the history of this manuscript, the circumstances surrounding the translation, and its purpose; some personal facts about the translator are also reviewed. This source represents the earliest Russian translation of the Old Testament, antedating by more than fifteen years the Russian Bible Society translations. Rev. Mikhail Fotinsky’s translation of five Old Testament books (only two ones in the Genesis) was sent to the Moscow Religious Censorship Committee (Moskovskaia Dukhovnaia tsenzura) in 1806, and the next year, Fotinsky asked the Censorship Committee to allow him to make a translation of the entire Old Testament. However, the censors left the manuscript in their repository, and there was no further development on this project. Contemporaries ignored this translation for several reasons. The first reason might be related to language: Fotinsky’s translation includes many Ukrainian elements. The second reason relates to its literary quality (or lack thereof), as the translation was interlinear and thus not stylistically developed. The manuscript contains many commentaries by Fotinsky, who concentrated on the Hebrew original and Judaic exegesis, trying to show different interpretations that may have occurred as a result of the polysemy of the original text.

Grundlingh, Louis. "“In what way are gay men actually harmful to society?” Exploring the evidence on the feasibility of amendments to the Sexual Offences Act 23 of 1957". New Contree 62 (30 novembre 2011): 21. http://dx.doi.org/10.4102/nc.v62i0.343.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Prompted by a perception that a gay sub-culture developed in the major urban areas of South Africa, and that this formed a threat to state security and to the established mores of society, the Minister of Justice, PC Pelser, appointed a Parliamentary Select Committee in 1968. The essence of the task given to the Select Committee was to provide clarity to the Department of Justice about a definition of homosexual acts as well as the causes, manifestations and extent of these practices. In addition, the Committee had to ascertain whether South African society was ready to decriminalise sodomy and “unnatural” sexual practices. A major concern was whether gay men were a danger to minors. The Committee received numerous written submissions and held regular meetings to hear oral testimonies, which covered a wide spectrum of opinions and issues. Representatives of the South African Police and the Afrikaans churches vehemently opposed homosexuality and homosexual activities. Ministers from the English churches pleaded for tolerance but with very specific preconditions. The position of the lawyers, psychiatrists and psychologists was clear: that homosexuality was not a threat, could not be “cured” and should be accepted. The investigation resulted in widespread debate, revealing facets of the moral dynamics of white South African society in the 1960s. Inter alia, issues such as the right of the state to make laws on morality and intrude on the privacy of individuals, diverse interpretations of the Bible, the level of intolerance for the “other” and the apparent difficulties to enforce any amendments to the Act - as far as homosexuality was concerned - were raised. By emphasising these issues, the intention of this article is to give an indication as to what extent gay white men were tolerated. To realize this, a discussion of the context of a very strong conservative government that underpinned the activities of Select Committee was essential. The upshot was that the deep-rooted conservatism of the state prevailed, finding expression in harsher and specific measures in the Immorality Amendment Act of 1969. The strong arguments from some church representatives, as well as the medical and legal fraternities, were discarded. Clearly the time was not yet ripe for liberalising sexuality in South Africa. Research for this article relied on the extensive testimonies before the Select Commission as published in its final report. In addition, relevant submissions in the Gay and Lesbian Archive at the University of the Witwatersrand helped to form a comprehensive picture and made qualitative analysis possible.

Abstract (sommario):
This article reconstructs the history of one KGB operation against the Jehovah’s Witnesses in Ukraine, launched by the Ukrainian security services in 1951. The operation aimed to infiltrate the Jehovah’s Witness underground organization in Ukraine and to organize a Witness country committee as a covert operation. The plan was designed such that the Soviet security service became the head of the Jehovah’s Witnesses organization, and the headquarters of the official Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society became a channel in their counter-intelligence operations. This article tells about the failures and unexpected side-effects of the secret operation caused by internal conflicts within the Soviet politics of religion. Paradoxically, in the context of a disintegrated Witness underground network, caused by the post-war deportations and mass arrests, severed communication channels with the Watch Tower Society and the absence of religious literature, the Soviet security service became an alternative communication channel between the faith communities and a source of religious reproduction (including the source of the production of Watch Tower literature). This study dwells upon historical materials from recently opened SBU (former KGB) archives in Ukraine.

Daly, Marwa El. "Challenges and potentials of channeling local philanthropy towards development and aocial justice and the role of waqf (Islamic and Arab-civic endowments) in building community foundations". Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Philosophische Fakultät III, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/16511.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This work provides a solid theoretical base on philanthropy, religious giving (Islamic zakat, ‘ushour, Waqf -plural: awqaf-, Sadaqa and Christian tithes or ‘ushour), and their implications on giving trends, development work, social justice philanthropy. The field study (quantitative and qualitative) that supports the theoretical framework reflects at a national level the Egyptian public’s perceptions on philanthropy, social justice, human rights, giving and volunteering and other concepts that determine the peoples’ civic engagement. The statistics cover 2000 households, 200 Civil Society Organizations distributed all over Egypt and interviews donors, recipients, religious people and other stakeholders. The numbers reflect philanthropic trends and for the first time provide a monetary estimate of local philanthropy of over USD 1 Billion annually. The survey proves that the per capita share of philanthropy outweighs the per capita share of foreign economic assistance to Egypt, which implies the significance of local giving if properly channeled, and not as it is actually consumed in the vicious circle of ad-hoc, person to person charity. In addition, the study relates local giving mechanisms derived from religion and culture to modern actual structures, like community foundations or community waqf that could bring about sustainable change in the communities. In sum, the work provides a comprehensive scientific base to help understand- and build on local philanthropy in Egypt. It explores the role that local individual giving could play in achieving sustainable development and building a new wave of community foundations not only in Egypt but in the Arab region at large. As a tangible result of this thesis, an innovative model that revives the concept of waqf and builds on the study’s results was created by the researcher and a dedicated board of trustees who succeeded in establishing Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation (WMCF) that not only introduces the community foundation model to Egypt, but revives and modernizes the waqf as a practical authentic philanthropic structure.

Pajević, Marko. "Meschonnic’s Poetics of Society". In The Henri Meschonnic Reader, 32–45. Edinburgh University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474445962.003.0003.

Abstract (sommario):
By systematically establishing what Meschonnic called a poetics of society, this chapter explores the connection between a theory of language and a theory of society. Meschonnic makes use of the old debate between realism and nominalism to criticize a language theory exclusively based on the sign. The particular accent system of the Hebrew Bible represents for Meschonnic an alternative model for thinking language, changing our ideas about poetics and subjectivity, with ethical and political consequences. This article sheds light on this political dimension of Meschonnic’s poetics, making the case for the cultivation of language awareness, for poetic thinking as a socially and politically formative activity. It contends that a different approach to language is a different approach to society, which entails that literature is of general social importance and poetics concerns much more than a narrow conception of literature.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter demonstrates that the First World War created circumstances in which state-private cooperation in public diplomacy was able to flourish more than ever before. In so doing, this chapter analyses the Pilgrims’ activities during the conflict, with a particular focus on the period after the US’s entry into the conflict in April 1917, a moment regarded by the Pilgrims as the culmination of all the work it had done since 1902 in support of UK-US international cooperation. This chapter analyses the ways in which the Pilgrims Society sought to consolidate what it regarded as significant progress towards lasting British-American friendship. It does so by providing an analytical account of the Pilgrims’ creation in autumn 1917 of the American Officers’ Club; the link between the Pilgrims and the official British propaganda body the National War Aims Committee; and the Society’s involvement in the large-scale public celebration of Britain’s Day, which took place across the US in December 1918. The chapter argues that the First World War resulted in greater cooperation between the Pilgrims and official propaganda bodies, meaning that the Society contributed in new ways to the development of public diplomacy.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter traces the Pilgrims Society’s contribution to the history of public diplomacy across the later 1920s, the 1930s, and the early 1940s. It does so in part by analysing the content of a speech given to the Society in 1925 by the new US Ambassador in London, Alanson Houghton. This speech paved the way for the Locarno Conference and provides evidence of a senior diplomat using a Pilgrims’ event to make a major intervention in European diplomacy. In addition, the chapter examines how further developments in American nativism continued to impact upon the Society. The chapter also analyses other significant Pilgrims’ events at which diplomats used the Society as a vehicle for public diplomacy, including Ambassador Charles Dawes’ speech in 1929 about naval disarmament, and a number of events during the Second World War at which figures including Winston Churchill sought to manage the relationship between Britain and the United States during the tense period leading up to the latter’s entry into the conflict. The chapter also demonstrates how the US Pilgrims sought to mobilise American sentiment in favour of the Allied cause and that it did so alongside the Committee to Defend America and the Century Group.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter charts the genesis of the Museum of Jewish-Tunisian Heritage in Tunis. Jewish culture has been exhibited in Tunisian museums since the beginning of the French Protectorate in 1881. Until recently, however, the idea of a museum entirely dedicated to Jewish-Tunisian history and culture was simply unconceivable in Tunisia, as Judaism was solidly understood as being tied to Israeli politics. Kazdaghli explains how the Jewish-Tunisian community, domestically and overseas, have seized the so-called ‘Jasmine Revolution’ and the democratic ideals it purports to push for the establishment of a joint-venture Museum of Jewish-Tunisian Heritage in Tunis. In a context of new democratic achievements, the museum project is publicised as an instrument of social change, a partner to the democratic transition. However, the chapter shows that such a project proves a difficult exercise as the organising committee navigates cultural taboos surrounding Judaism in Tunisian society, as well as conflicting patrimonial opinions within the community itself, in Tunisia and within the diaspora.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter presents an unpublished translation of a text from Henri Meschonnic’s opus magnum Critique du rythme. Anthropologie historique du langage (Lagrasse: Verdier, 1982). Meschonnic (1932-2009) was a French linguist, poet and translator of the Bible who developed a theory of language based on the notion of rhythm. His theory of language is of concern for many fields and aims at transforming notions such as rhythm, the subject, the poem and the episteme altogether, thus developing a poetics of society. The new translation provided for this chapter exposes in a nutshell some of the main notions of Meschonnic’s theory. Based on Émile Benveniste’s linguistic archaeology of the notion of rhythm, in which he argues for this term to originally designate the ‘form in movement’, Meschonnic developed his poetics of rhythm transforming the traditional formal notion into a semantic one. Rhythm thus becomes central to ‘signifiance’, that is, the way meaning is constituted.

Abstract (sommario):
The inspiring landscape of Hadrian’s Wall has always evoked a creative response from musicians: a quick internet search will find a number of tunes and songs celebrating the Wall and the Sycamore Gap tree in its glory or lamenting its loss. Well suited to both energetic rippling melodies and lyrical airs or laments, the soft tones of the bellows-blown Northumbrian small pipes have often been heard at events connected with Hadrian’s Wall. In the days of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle’s gloriously-named Ancient Melodies Committee and the 1882 publication of the bible of local music and song Northumbrian Minstrelsy, the pipes were played at dinners or receptions during the Hadrian’s Wall Pilgrimages of 1886 and 1906 by Richard Mowat and James Hall (Piper to the Duke of Northumberland) respectively; much more recently, since the establishment of the Morpeth Chantry Bagpipe Museum, I have been honoured to play the small pipes at the last four Pilgrimages, and also introduced our local instrument to the international 2009 Congress of Roman Frontier Studies in Newcastle. Perhaps the most memorable occasion was being invited to play at a hand-fasting ceremony for an Australian couple at Steel Rigg. Some passing German tourists seemed to assume this was a normal occurrence in such wild parts. The first pipes tune here, The Sycamore, is followed by Mind The Gap – not a facetious title, but a gentle pun on both the Northumbrian expression “mind” meaning “remember, be mindful of” and the Standard English usage for “object to”, reflecting the outrage felt when the tree was felled. This second tune starts in a cheerful major key with tree and landscape in harmony, but is cut off with a slow descent into the more poignant minor key of the lament.

Abstract (sommario):
The COVID-19 pandemic has arguably caused the biggest disruption to the museum and heritage sector since the Second World War. All over the world, museums have had to close, some never to reopen, and many have had to suspend their operations for prolonged periods. However, the disruption has also invited – sometimes forced – substantial changes in the way museums perceive themselves and their interactions with their audiences. This has included an increased focus on digital offers, a reconsideration of the human relationships with external as well as internal stakeholders, new ways to guarantee the preservation, documentation and availability of collections and revised financial and sustainability planning. Some of these changes will be transitory, while others are likely to leave permanent footprints on the identity of museums and the way they operate even after the emergency has passed. This conference will highlight and discuss some of the initiatives and innovations that emerged from the past year, with particular attention to curatorship, conservation, learning and participation, and documentation and research. Critical perspectives, as well as case studies are invited to focus on the long-term impact of the pandemic and on the way the identity of music museums, their value and relevance to society and research, and their ways of operating internally and externally may have been transformed.
