This article takes a look at 624 neighborhood maps, drawn by students aged 8 to 18 years from 24 countries, between 2017 and 2018. The maps were made as part of an online cultural exchange program called Out of Eden Learn, developed at Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. In honor of Dr. Ellen Winner, a preliminary analysis of the maps is offered using The Studio Thinking framework as a lens. Developed by Winner and her colleagues, the Studio Thinking framework identifies eight habits of mind—sometimes called thinking dispositions—that are characteristic of high-quality thinking in the arts and elsewhere. The article focuses on three of these dispositions in particular: Envision, Observe, and Express. With a twist, it also says a few words about a fourth, Understanding Art World.

Our scientific odyssey through the theory of 1-D cellular automata is enriched by the definition of quasi-ergodicity, a new empirical property discovered by analyzing the time-1 return maps of local rules. Quasi-ergodicity plays a key role in the classification of rules into six groups: in fact, it is an exclusive characteristic of complex and hyper Bernoulli-shift rules. Besides introducing quasi-ergodicity, this paper answers several questions posed in the previous chapters of our quest. To start with, we offer a rigorous explanation of the fractal behavior of the time-1 characteristic functions, finding the equations that describe this phenomenon. Then, we propose a classification of rules according to the presence of Isles of Eden, and prove that only 28 local rules out of 256 do not have any of them; this result sheds light on the importance of Isles of Eden. A section of this paper is devoted to the characterization of Bernoulli basin-tree diagrams through modular arithmetic; the formulas obtained allow us to shorten drastically the number of cases to take into consideration during numerical simulations. Last but not least, we present some theorems about additive rules, including an analytical explanation of their scale-free property.

The results of the Eden Strategy Institute 2021 study show that Bandung City is ranked 28th in the world's Top 50 Smart City Government Rankings. However, from the results of the Asian Development Outlook 2019 study, Bandung City is ranked as the most congested city in Indonesia and 14th in Asia. Solutions to problems are offered in the form of Mobility as a Service (MaaS), an integrated system of transportation services, digitization, and the use of big data. The realization of MaaS requires contributions from all parties. The synergy between the government, academia, stakeholders, the media, and the public is called Pentahelix. The research stage includes the collection of primary data and secondary data by conducting a literature review. Then conduct a graphical analysis of multivariate data on Pentahelix with three assessments, namely performance, competence, and involvement. Next, modeling and loading were carried out for a pilot simulation of The Bandung City area in the eastern region using macro or meso-level traffic simulation software, namely PTV Visum 2022 (Student). After comparing with real-time analysis from the Google Maps application, comprehensive results were obtained with real conditions. As a means of controlling public transportation services, an Electronic Device Capture (EDC) hardware digital system is needed that is integrated between modes through software and artificial intelligence. The final stage of this study was carried out a risk analysis matrix for the implementation of MaaS for the city of Bandung with moderate risk results. MaaS is not a new idea, but it is a good solution to overcome congestion and change Bandung’s transportation concept.

Abstract Flood simulation models and hazard maps are only as good as the underlying data against which they are calibrated and tested. However, extreme flood events are by definition rare, so the observational data of flood inundation extent are limited in both quality and quantity. The relative importance of these observational uncertainties has increased now that computing power and accurate lidar scans make it possible to run high-resolution 2D models to simulate floods in urban areas. However, the value of these simulations is limited by the uncertainty in the true extent of the flood. This paper addresses that challenge by analyzing a point dataset of maximum water extent from a flood event on the River Eden at Carlisle, United Kingdom, in January 2005. The observation dataset is based on a collection of wrack and water marks from two postevent surveys. A smoothing algorithm for identifying, quantifying, and reducing localized inconsistencies in the dataset is proposed and evaluated showing positive results. The proposed smoothing algorithm can be applied in order to improve flood inundation modeling assessment and the determination of risk zones on the floodplain.

The article analyzes the phenomenon of information exchange of trees and shows the productive role of nature in urban revitalization. Based on the EDEN Project, the potential of mental maps of the city, taking into account natural objects, was revealed. The specificity and significant sociocultural influence on the human worldview of the historically composed mytho-archetypes of the tree, their sacred and artistic images, aspects of dendrology under the auspices of biomorphic urbanism as an innovative philosophy of our days are determined. The fact of the existence of cognitive-communicative functions of nature determines the further transformation of the human worldview from the perception of nature as an eternal object of subjugation to the modern perception of it as an equal anthropomorphic subject. The topic is especially relevant in the field of post-war urban development. It is shown that the restoration of European cities, destroyed during the Second World War, took place in the unity of the revitalization of urban architecture and living nature, and harmonious development today is possible precisely thanks to such unity. The statistics of the destruction of natural objects during the period of the current Russian-Ukrainian war are presented. An overview of the facts of restoration, preservation and multiplication of natural zones in the de-occupied cities and villages of Ukraine - a symbol of the invincible spirit of Ukrainians - was made.

AbstractThis chapter focuses on the introduction and discussion of electron polarization. In addition to the gyromagnetic ratio, the most different character of electrons compared to protons is that electrons radiate electromagnetic energy in a circular accelerator. A very small correction has to be applied to the electron spin flip to account for the synchrotron radiation. The different instantaneous spin flip probabilities, up to down and down to up, can build up the electron beam polarization state. However, mostly synchrotron radiation tends to disturb the electron orbital motion that is eventually balanced by the radiation damping along an equilibrium orbit. The electron spin motion is described by the modified Thomas-BMT equation with the radiative spin transition term included. Detail of the electron (de)polarization phenomena is described in this chapter. This chapter considers the question of what made the recent disaster called Katrina in 2005, and its mediation, distinct from its 1927 forerunner. It argues that what was most different about the two events is that artists and commentators in 2005 could be more openly critical of the racial and class dimensions of their disaster before a multiracial mass audience. The chapter also considers a poem that appeared in print in April 1927, which must have seemed a providential coincidence to many readers. The poem, called “Noah Built the Ark,” moves from the halcyon days in Eden to the point at which “God got sorry that he ever made man.” Like other works of the Harlem Renaissance, the poem called upon the currency of folk form to create a public awareness of traditions within African American culture.

It lists Auden’s books, and his contributions to books and periodicals, but does not include interviews, published extracts fom private letters, recordings, broadcasts, or other forms of publication. Sosyal teori üretimi, sanıldığının aksine gerçek hayatla hiçbir ilgisi olmayan, içi boş levhalardan oluşan bir teoriler zinciri değildir. Tam tersine, sosyal teoriler, en başından beri, içinde yaşanılan toplumsal gerçekliği ele alarak, toplumsal olguların anlaşılmasında ve açıklanmasında izlekler sunan, bazen birbiririni destekleyen bazen de birbirbirine karşı çıkan yaklaşımlar bütünüdür. Endüstrileşme, şehirleşme, kitle toplumu, tüketim toplumu, yabancılaşma, ayrımcılık gibi sosyal olgular, içi boş etiketler değil, içinde yaşadığımız toplumsal gerçekliği anlatan kavramlardır. Dolayısıyla, bu kavramlar üzerinden toplumsal gerçekliği anlamlandırmaya çalışan sosyal teoriler, yaygın kanının aksine hiç de içi boş fikirlerden ibaret değildirler. Modernleşmenin bir parçası olarak ortaya çıkan, hatta “modernin (new/yenini) bilimi” olarak da ifade edilen Sosyoloji, Endüstri Devrimi sonrasında, toplumsal bağlarından koparak, kırsaldan kente göç eden büyük kalabalıkların/kitlelerin içinde yaşadığı toplumu ele almıştır. Bu çalışma, Sosyoloji’den ayrıştırılarak modellere indirgenmiş, parçalanmış İletişim Kuramları anlatısı sunmak yerine; İletişim Araştırmaları’yla Sosyoloji arasındaki bağı yeniden kurma çabası yönünde bir girişimdir. Çalışmada, Sosyoloji’nin bir disiplin olarak gelişimini sağlayan Chicago Okulu araştırmacılarının “iletişim ve iletişim araçlarına” olan yaklaşımları ve Chicago Okulu’nun İletişim araştırmaları konu edilmiştir. Abstract This chapter investigates the presence of Chaucer in Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary (1755, 2nd edn, 1773). There are considerable difficulties in reconciling remarks in Johnson’s Lives of the Poets, his plans for an edition of Chaucer, and his references to Chaucer in different parts of the Dictionary. Johnson presented Chaucer with difficulties of every kind, as a historian of the language, as a historian of the course of English poetry, and as a literary critic. His decision to confine his illustrative examples to works composed during and after the sixteenth century should have excluded Chaucer entirely. But Chaucer creeps in (often via Junius’s Etymologicon). Johnson cites lines that appear nowhere in Chaucer’s texts, and misquotes some that do. Some Chaucerian words and phrases (‘Mars armipotent’, ‘gladder’) are attributed to Dryden rather than to their source in Chaucer, and the reader of the Dictionary is offered a great many passages of Chaucer via Dryden. So frequent, indeed, is citation of Dryden’s Chaucerian versions, that some works (e.g. The Character of a Good Parson) appear piecemeal almost entire in the Dictionary.

This chapter explores Raul Hilberg's The Destruction of the European Jews (1985). Hilberg's predominant concern in 1961 and again in 1985 was to fully disentangle the labyrinth of the intricate Nazi bureaucracy, which remains for him the clue to understanding how the mass murder of some 5,200,000, according to Hilberg's calculation, was possible. Thus, Hilberg has fully preserved the structure, the method of inquiry, and the interpretation embedded in the first edition and rarely sees the need to deviate from his earlier presentation. The prism of the German bureaucracy serves Hilberg to view the evolution of the destruction process and it is through its horrifying success that the tragic failure of the Jews to counter effectively the destruction process is assessed. As such, Hilberg looms as the functionalist par excellence. Save for his opening chapter, where he pits Nazi anti-semitism against previous anti-semitic regulations to show the ideological and legalistic parallels and divergencies, Hilberg shies away from some of the major questions which have attracted historical enquiry in the last quarter of a century.

The Browns Hole quadrangle is in Weber and Cache Counties of northern Utah and covers the eastern part of Ogden Valley, a rapidly developing area of the Wasatch Range. The Middle and South Forks of the Ogden River bisect the quadrangle and are important watersheds and recreational areas to the communities of Ogden Valley and the Wasatch Front. The towns of Huntsville and Eden are just west of the quadrangle, unincorporated communities with year-round residents are present throughout the quadrangle, and numerous summer-cabin communities are present in the eastern part of the quadrangle. A portion of Powder Mountain ski resort, which draws year-round visitation and recreation, is present in the northwest corner of the quadrangle. The quadrangle contains the Willard thrust, a major thrust fault with approximately 30 mi (50 km) of eastward displacement that was active during the Cretaceous-Eocene Sevier orogeny (Yonkee and others, 2019). In the quadrangle, the Willard thrust places Neoproterozoic through Ordovician strata in the hanging wall over a fault-bounded lozenge of Cambrian strata and footwall Jurassic and Triassic strata (see cross section on Plate 2). Neoproterozoic strata comprise a succession of mostly clastic rocks deposited during rifting of western North America and breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia (Yonkee and others, 2014). These rocks include the Cryogenian-age Perry Canyon and Maple Canyon Formations, and the Ediacaran-age Kelley Canyon Formation, Papoose Creek Formation, Caddy Canyon Quartzite, Inkom Formation, Mutual Formation, and Browns Hole Formation. The Browns Hole Formation is a sequence of interbedded volcaniclastic rock and basalt lava flows that provides the only radiometric age control in the quadrangle. Provow and others (2021) reported a ~610 Ma detrital apatite U-Pb age from volcaniclastic sandstone at the base of the formation, Crittenden and Wallace (1973) reported a 580 ± 14 Ma K-Ar hornblende age for a volcanic clast, and Verdel (2009) reported a 609 ± 25 Ma U-Pb apatite age for a basalt flow near the top of the formation. Cambrian strata in the hanging wall include a thick basal clastic sequence (Geertsen Canyon Quartzite) overlain by a thick sequence of interbedded limestone, shale, and dolomite (Langston, Ute, and Blacksmith Formations). Hanging wall rocks are deformed by Willard thrust-related structures, including the Browns Hole anticline, Maple Canyon thrust, and numerous smaller folds and minor faults. Footwall rocks of the Willard thrust include highly deformed Cambrian strata within a fault-bounded lozenge exposed in the southern part of the quadrangle, and Jurassic and Triassic rocks exposed just south of the quadrangle. The Paleocene-Eocene Wasatch Formation unconformably overlies older rocks and was deposited over considerable paleotopography developed during late stages of the Sevier orogeny. The southwest part of the quadrangle is cut by a southwest-dipping normal fault system that bounds the east side of Ogden Valley. This fault is interpreted to have experienced an early phase of slip during local late Eocene to Oligocene collapse of the Sevier belt and deposition of volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks (Norwood Tuff) exposed west of the quadrangle (Sorensen and Crittenden, 1979), and a younger phase of slip during Neogene Basin and Range extension (Zoback, 1983). Lacustrine deposits and shorelines of Pleistocene-age Lake Bonneville are present in the southwest corner of the quadrangle near the mouth of the South Fork of the Ogden River and record the highstand of Lake Bonneville (Oviatt, 2015). Pleistocene glacial deposits, present in the northwest corner of the map, are likely related to the Pinedale glaciation, commonly expressed by two moraine building episodes in the Wasatch Range (Quirk and others, 2020). Numerous incised alluvial deposits and geomorphic surfaces are present along major drainages and record pre- and post-Lake Bonneville aggradational and degradational alluvial and colluvial sequences. Mass-movement deposits, including historically active landslides, are present throughout the quadrangle. Crittenden (1972) mapped the Browns Hole quadrangle at 1:24,000 scale, which provided an excellent foundation for the general stratigraphy and structure, but the 1972 map lacked important details of unconsolidated surficial units. As part of 1:62,500 scale mapping of the Ogden 30'x60' quadrangle, Coogan and King (2016) updated stratigraphic nomenclature, revised some contacts, and added more details for surficial units. For this map, we utilized new techniques for data acquisition and analysis to delineate surficial deposits, bedrock contacts, and faults more accurately and precisely. Mapping and field data collection were largely done in 2021–2022 using a combination of GPS-enabled tablets equipped with georectified aerial imagery (U.S. Department of Agriculture [USDA] National Agriculture Imagery Program [NAIP], 2009), orthoimagery (Utah Geospatial Resource Center [UGRC] State Geographic Information Database, 2018b, 2018c; 2021a, 2021b), and lidar data (UGRC State Geographic Information Database, 2006; 2011; 2013–2014; 2018a), previously published geologic maps, topographic maps, and applications for digital attitude collection. We also used hand-held GPS units, Brunton compasses, and field notebooks to collect geologic data. Field data were transferred to a Geographic Information System (GIS), where the map was compiled and completed.

Aujourd'hui, la communauté éducative dans son ensemble est confrontée à un défi universel : se préparer à l'ère de la post-pandémie-COVID-19. Ce défi signifie qu’il faut assurer un enseignement équitable et de qualité ainsi qu'une évaluation efficace et efficiente de l'apprentissage selon des modalités hybrides, flexibles ou entièrement à distance. En outre, les bureaux de soutien à l’enseignement (BSE) jouent un rôle essentiel pour relever et surmonter ce défi. Ce livre blanc met en lumière la manière dont les BSE, les centres d'enseignement et d'apprentissage et les entités équivalentes ont abordé et prévoient d'aborder les tendances et les problèmes de l'apprentissage numérique dans le contexte de la perturbation de l'enseignement causée par la COVID-19. Il commence par un aperçu du rôle traditionnel que les BSE et les entités équivalentes ont joué depuis leur création dans les établissements d'enseignement. Il décrit ensuite comment ce rôle a évolué pour devenir les premiers intervenants académiques dans le contexte de la pandémie COVID-19.
