Abstract (sommario):
For indicators to assess a society’s sustainability it is necessary that the understanding of what type of sustainability one wishes to measure is clear. The hypothesis tested in the present study is that solid waste management indicators, used in city sustainability assessments, do not represent the concept of strong sustainability. To test the hypothesis, the article initially identifies the perspectives of solid waste management from the strong sustainability’s point of view, under Ecological Economy perspective. The hypothesis was tested in thirteen sustainability assessment tools, covering approximately 400 cities. Two, out of five perspectives identified, had indicators selected represent them. Only one system presented three perspectives, and eight presented two. To represent the theme’s complexity, all perspectives should be considered, so the hypothesis formulated was accepted.

Abstract (sommario):
This study aims to analyse the predisposition of social economy agents to resource sharing. To achieve this, it was chosen to implement an exploratory qualitative approach directed to managers and an exploratory quantitative approach directed to employees. The results allowed to estimate that they do have a significant economic impact on number, paid work and business volume. It was shown the relationship between the interest demonstration on sharing and the appropriate qualification for the jobs of managers and employees. It was demonstrated the practice of informal and non-regulated sharing of own and third parties’ resources, among close partners, without the existence of a management model of knowledge, assets, time, use/reuse and exploitation. It is anticipated that the study could serve as scientific/methodological basis for a regional investment project, R&D and establishment of partnerships, reconciling interest in a smart region, as well as the application of circular economy principles.

Abstract (sommario):
The asymmetry in combining ethics, economic efficiency, intra-generational and inter-generational equity, which characterizes the current governance of the three fundamental functions of the planet's economic systems, is at the origin of the segmented approach to well-being in territories, that is, the inability to be able to satisfy the various demands of the Company without "outsourcing the costs of the scarcity" of capital stocks, generating inequalities and jeopardizing the well-being of future generations. In other words, without being able to pursue an integrated approach to well-being and its sustainability. In this context, the awareness of firms and families of having to adopt new deci-sion-making models, focused on the circular economy, and capable of directing Territories towards a "Circular Economic System" becomes central.

Abstract (sommario):
Sustainability is a “contested” concept introduced at the beginning of the 18th century in German forestry circles concerned about sustainable harvests and rebranded in 1987 as “sustainable development” by the Brundtland Report, which defined it as harmonious economic, social, and ecological development that enhances both current and future potential to meet human needs and aspirations. However, after more than three decades of sustainable development, humanity is on an unsustainable path featuring rampant ecosystem damage, rising social inequality, and harmful cultural homogenization. This paper is a book review of Fred P. Gale’s Political Economy of Sustainability, a book published in 2018 by Edward Elgar Publishers. The book advances the innovative idea that the current lack of progress in implementation of the sustainable development goals is due to the narrow understanding by individuals, firms, states, and political parties of the values underlying sustainability. The book thus starts a much-needed conversation about economic values, a conversation ousted from the neo-classical economics discipline in the late 19th century by the marginalist thinkers who wanted to make it a positive science. The book identifies four elemental economic values—exchange value, labor value, use value, and function value—and argues that basing our socio-economic and political development on only one type of value with the exclusion of the others has led to the current dangerously unsustainable path humankind is on. Achieving sustainability value requires a balanced integration of all four types of values in all deliberations about socio-economic activities. How can this be accomplished? The author proposes a pragmatic solution in the form of a “tetravaluation” process, a dialogue involving multiple value holders able to reflexively negotiate and compromise until the pluralistic sustainability value is discovered and accepted by all the parties. The book challenges the unsustainable functioning of existing economic, political, and cultural institutions and invites a rethinking of their governance, which should deliberately embrace the pluralistic value of sustainability. The tetravaluation process has the potential to generate sustainable choices and inform better policy decisions able to protect at the same time the proponents of exchange value (consumers), the promoters of labor value (workers, producers), the beneficiaries of use value (communities), and the holder of functional values (the environment).

Abstract (sommario):
Shared economy is a current concept associated with the sharing of human, physical and intellectual resources. The penetration of a shared economy into different sectors of human activity is often referred to as a prerequisite for further sustainable development. Thus, a shared economy is one of the basic pillars of sustainable development, as it helps the market to function better, raises awareness of prices and the quality of services, but also enables anyone to have better market access. It is necessary to monitor, research, analyze and focus on identifying positive as well as negative impacts. The speed of technological development has significantly exceeded the legislative, regulatory and tax frameworks, which is often the cause of tensions between old and new business models. In general, a balance between a degree of regulation and freedom is a desirable state of affairs, providing a clear framework and rules for a shared economy while allowing for its further development and change. However, there is no consensus among experts on how to achieve this balance. The tightening of the regulation of individual shared services or, on the contrary, the deregulation of traditional industries is most often mentioned. At the same time, there are critical voices pointing to the fact that a shared economy is the result of technological progress that cannot be suppressed or reversed by any regulation, so it should have its own special laws. Given the popularity and constant development of digital technologies along with consumer habits, it is very real that a shared economy will sooner or later affect almost all areas of business. In order to make the best use of its potential, it will be necessary to find a way to adapt to its development and influence it as needed. The paper deals with the above areas with a possible prediction and proposal for future development. Keywords: Shared Economy; Circular Economics; Sustainability; Consumption; Externality

Abstract (sommario):
Space Economy (SE) is increasingly becoming relevant for business and management with impacts on many industrial segments (i.e. agriculture, transport, assurance and the environment) but also on sustainable practices (i.e. Agenda 2030). Despite the importance of SE for new business models and value creation processes in the ecosystem, theoretical approaches for the downstream space economy implementation are still quite limited in literature. Accordingly, this paper reports the results of an in-depth analysis of the main factors (i.e. Open innovation drivers and Digital Platform business model) that affect effective implementation of space value chain models

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Over time, the market economy has undergone many changes caused by the processes underlying its operation, and have focused on the scarcity of resources, interdependencies between economic agents, intensified exchanges, technical and scientific progress and computerization of economic systems. Given the many variables that act and ensure the functionality of the contemporary market economy, it is particularly important that the interdependencies between them be addressed in terms of sustainability. This paper addresses sustainability as a condition for supporting sustainable economic development, starting from the main links that support economic growth, namely production and consumption. Sustainable economic growth must be accompanied by measures to optimize the processes that characterize production and consumption, aiming at reducing resource waste, maximizing the intrinsic value of waste from economic activity and ensuring an infrastructure that makes it possible to move from the linear economy to the circular economy. Starting from the current stage of the steps taken to ensure sustainable economic development, the paper presents the main challenges faced by supply and demand, representing shortcomings in ensuring the road to circularity.

Abstract (sommario):
Macroeconomic theory says that taxes play a repressing role in an economy. Introduction of new forms of taxation, the increase of tax rates and augmentation of tax income of the Government puts a downturn risk on consumption and therefore on economic growth. Knowing that, governments of different countries start to competing among themselves by lowering corporate tax rates and trying to boost economic growth by using foreign investments. On the other hand governments are pushed to lower personal tax rates in order to satisfy their electorate. It has been strongly believed that countries with lower tax rates have better prospects for the future growth. However, small tax income is limiting governmental spending and might cause serious imbalances in the economy. As the Irish example shows, smaller taxes cannot guarantee a sustainable growth of the economy. Thus, the relationship between taxation and economic development needs rethinking. This study aimed to test the efficiency of taxation in terms of sustainable economic development and to discuss the factors that are the most important here.A comparative analysis of EU countries was used in the research. The results suggest that the harmfully small tax rates could have violated the sustainability of some European economies.

Abstract (sommario):
(1) Background: The sharing economy has emerged as a phenomenon widely described by academic literature to promote more sustainable consumption practices such as access over ownership. However, there exists great semantic confusion within academic literature surrounding the term “sharing economy,” which threatens the realisation of its purported sustainability potential. (2) Objective: The aim of this paper is to synthesise the existing academic definitions and propose a definition of the sharing economy from the perspective of sustainability science in order to indicate sharing practices that are consistent with the sustainability claims attributed to the sharing economy. (3) Methods: We conduct a database search to collect relevant academic articles. Then, we leverage qualitative content analysis in order to analyse the authors’ definitions and to synthesise the broad dimensions of the sharing economy in the discourse. (4) Results: We propose the following characteristics, or semantic properties, of the sharing economy for sustainability: ICT-mediated, non-pecuniary motivation for ownership, temporary access, rivalrous and tangible goods. (5) Conclusion: The semantic properties that inform our definition of the sharing economy for sustainability indicate those sharing practices that promote sustainable consumption compared to purely market-based exchanges. This definition is relevant for academics studying the sustainability impacts of the sharing economy in order to promote comparability and compatibility in research. Furthermore, the definition is useful for policy-makers, entrepreneurs, managers and consumers that have the sharing economy on the agenda in order to promote social enterprise and support sustainable consumption.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper presents a vision for the future of Horizon 2050 and the sustainable effect of the mountain economy starting from the conceptual definition of montanology that “integrates knowledge (disciplines) in the following fields: agriculture, animal husbandry, human ecology, geo-ecology and pedology, biology, demography and ethnography, human and animal psychology, architecture, construction and building materials, elements of forestry and geology, beekeeping, fish farming, economics, organization and functioning of the mountain private household, as well as other specific systems, mountain systematization, mountain design, specific ergonomics, small industry and crafts, tourism and agrotourism, health education, nature material resources (minerals, plants and animals) and energy resources (unconventional), legislation and legal relations, other useful knowledge with mountain specifics, human resources - tradition and culture ”(R. Rey, 1985). Moreover, we intend to highlight in the paper the challenges and priorities at national and European level in the mountain economy. The results of the paper highlight the complete solution for a sustainable mountain rural development, through which farmers will be able to get fair prices for raw materials "mountain products", which would meet the real needs of mountain farmers, small and medium par excellence, to increase family income, based on renewable resources and increasing farm capitalization and investment capacity, all of which are based on strategic guidelines with practical applicability following the professional experiences of the authors of the paper. Abstract This paper calculates an index measuring economic sustainability for the mainstream economy in the MENA region during the period 1999–2016. Our approximation says that a large value of the index indicates more stress on the economy or low sustainability and vice versa. We also explore some macroeconomic variables as potential determinants of economic sustainability. We employ the panel data analysis, in particular the feasible generalized least squares (FGLS). Our results show that economic development, trade openness, and political stability encourage economic sustainability. In contrast, government expenditures and control of corruption hinder the sustainability of the economy. Our paper suggests that policymakers should concentrate on economic development, enhance the trade openness, and create political stability environment to strengthen economic sustainability. Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate how recruiters at a college career fair perceive sustainability and the knowledge business graduates should have about it. It reports on how recruiters understand sustainability and perceive their organization’s engagement and resulting expectations for new hires. The results indicate that recruiters neither understand sustainability well, nor are suitably informed of their organizations’ needs with respect to this topic. Educators, as a consequence, face a dilemma of how to craft adequate educational experiences, as employer needs are not clearly expressed. The paper concludes with suggestions on how educational institutions can nevertheless proceed with offerings in sustainability education. Design/methodology/approach – The study was performed by conducting personal, structured interviews at a college career fair. Findings – While most respondents considered sustainability to be an important topic, there appears to be a lack of thorough understanding of sustainability. Recruiters were not overly informed about their organizations’ position and efforts toward sustainability. They considered it to be important that students learn about sustainability, but preferences for educational tools were not aligned with expected depth of knowledge. This leaves educators in search of guidance on how to align educational offerings with organizational needs. Research limitations/implications – As a pilot study, the total number of interviewed organizations was low, and therefore, the results should not be over-interpreted. The findings nevertheless point to a clear disconnect between organizations’ expressed needs for adequate trained personal and their ability to define what they are looking for. These results encourage more research to develop a better link between company strategy toward sustainability, recruiter’s know-how of it and concise expectations in new hires that could be mirrored in educational offerings. Practical implications – Human resources play a critical role in providing organizations with the capabilities to become more sustainable. Organizations need to develop concise recruitment policies that better communicate what they are looking for, as well as educational programs for recruiters to ensure future hiring fulfills critical needs. Originality/value – This paper closes a gap in the literature as it includes a thus-far ignored stakeholder group, namely recruiters; into the research on how to align organizational needs with the development of adequate educational offerings that generate future leaders and managers well-versed in sustainability.

Abstract (sommario):
Nowadays, studying the categories of “economic sustainability”, “economic sustainability management” and the peculiarities of these concepts is especially relevant. Their use would provide an opportunity to ensure the sustainable and most effective functioning of the subject of economic relations in the current period of time, as well as to create a high potential for its development and ensuring the conditions for investing capital in the Ukrainian economy. All this determined the purpose of this study, which consists in the analysis of the theory and essence of the economic sustainability concept, the interpretation of the concept of “economic sustainability of the system” and the concept of “management of economic sustainability of the system”, distinguishing factors affecting the sustainability of the Ukrainian economic system, determining the relationship of economic sustainability with economic security, investing as well as forecasting the level of the Ukrainian economy sustainability based on the innovative modeling methods. The object of the research is to develop the theory of the “economic sustainability” concept and to determine the level of economic sustainability of the economy aimed at raising the investment climate in Ukraine. To ensure the development, security and investment attractiveness of the Ukrainian economy, an organizational structure of the management model for the sustainability of the Ukrainian economic system was developed using the developed economic and mathematical model.

Abstract (sommario):
PurposeThis article addresses the lack of scholarly attention paid to the sharing economy from a sociological perspective, with respect to the technology-mediated interactions between sharing economy users. The paper provides a critical overview of the sharing economy and its impact on business and communities and explores how information technology can facilitate authentic, genuine sharing through exercising and enabling conviviality and non-direct reciprocity.Design/methodology/approachThe paper begins with a critique of the technology-mediated sharing economy, introduces the concept of conviviality as a tool to grow and shape community and sustainability within the sharing economy and then explores reciprocity and sharing behaviour. Finally, the paper draws upon social exchange theory to illustrate conviviality and reciprocity, using four case studies of technology-enabled sharing.FindingsThe paper contributes to the emerging debate around how the sharing economy, driven by information systems and technology, affects social cohesion and personal relationships. The paper elucidates the central role conviviality and reciprocity play in explaining the paradoxes, tensions and impact of the sharing economy on society. Conviviality and reciprocity are positioned as key capabilities of a more sustainable version of the sharing economy, enabled via information technology.Originality/valueThe findings reveal that information technology-mediated sharing enterprises should promote conviviality and reciprocity in order to deliver more positive environmental, economic and social benefits. The diversity of existing operations indicated by the findings and the controversies discussed will guide the critical study of the social potential of sharing economy to avoid treating all sharing alike.

Abstract (sommario):
Sustainability has become a core strategic initiative for firms in the global economy. Its key benefits aside, sustainability may increase a firm’s risks, undermining its prospective value. The intricate relationship among sustainability’s impact on various dimensions of firm risk is poorly understood, particularly for firms operating in emerging economies. The purpose of this study is to address this gap by developing a nuanced framework for the sustainability–risk relationship in various industries in emerging economies. A multi-method approach was used to collect both quantitative and qualitative data through interviews and site visits for supply chain members of four industries. A fuzzy AHP method was used to illustrate cross-industry differences in sustainability-induced firm risks. These differences are further illustrated through inductive, interpretive analysis of semi-structured interviews. Sustainability behaves as a limits-to-growth system and engenders different risk profiles across four industries. For all firms in emerging economy, sustainability initiatives increase various unanticipated risks. Thus, these firms must saliently tailor sustainability initiatives uniquely suitable for their industry to avoid compromising their value proposition. Insights gleaned from this study may assist both buyers from multinational corporations in the developed economy to propagate sustainability initiatives and suppliers in the emerging economy to implement sustainability initiatives more saliently.

Abstract (sommario):
In the past decades, in all the world schools and faculties of economics, it was taught that the main objective of economic policy is to ensure continuous economic growth. However, for reasons of limited absorption capacity of the environment and increasing reduction of the original ecosystems, models of economic growth are in opposition to the basic ecological principles. This is primarily the consequence of learning and applying the conventional economic paradigm which disregards the relationship between economy and environment. Therefore, the authors of this paper, proceeding from the correlation between economy and environment from the aspect of fundamental natural laws, analysed the basic determinants of the strong sustainability paradigm which implies that natural capital resources should be maintained in the constant flow of time. The research also includes analysis of the correlation between specific economic and ecological challenges of sustainable development in global regions. The authors concluded that sustainable economy may exist only in the sustainable symbiosis with the natural system. Taking into account the complex relationship between nature, society, technology and economy, the authors concluded the paper with the proposition of concrete guidelines for a reform of economic education, in accordance with the concept of strong sustainability. Key words: economy, education, environment, strong sustainability, weak sustainability.

Abstract (sommario):
The current unsustainable growth of the world economy is largely a consequence of the crisis of social capital experienced by much of the world’s population. Declining social capital leads economies towards excessive growth, because people seek, in economic affluence, compensation for emotional distress and loss of resources caused by scarce social and affective relationships. To slow down economic growth requires an increase in social capital that is a fundamental contributor to happiness. From a wide range of possible approaches to increasing present happiness, this article suggests policies that would shift the economy to a more sustainable path. It focuses on a more politically sustainable set of proposals for a green ‘new deal’ than some of those currently under discussion.

Amongst the recommendations is that sentiment and favouritism should be avoided in the disbursement of the loan and should be based on merit to ensure that those with the managerial ability should be highly encouraged to enable break even and not failure based on managerial inability and acumen to perform.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the shadow economy and public debt in Turkey. We elaborate on the questions regarding the negative effects of shadow economy on the sustainability of public debt observing the estimates about the size of shadow economy in Turkey. In the light of some scholars? estimates, we re-evaluate the macroeconomic situation of Turkey. At the core of the study, we discuss how the government borrowing policies would differ if the shadow economy was included into the legal system. In order to examine the effects of shadow economy on sustainability, we use various sustainability indicators. There is a significant difference observed between the calculations which take into account the volume of shadow economy as a share of economic system and those that exclude shadow economy as an exogenous variable. .

Abstract (sommario):
1. Background. The Orange economy includes creative and cultural activities; and it has aroused great interest, both for research on growth and for public agencies and institutions, which have highlighted its capacity as an economic engine and a generator of sustainable growth. Despite this widely disseminated argument, empirical evidence is scarce. 2. Methods. This paper aims to resolve that, based on an analysis of Orange economy companies in two Spanish regions—the Valencian and Galician Autonomous Communities—for the period between 2000 and 2019. Based on the SABI® database, which contains data from the annual accounts that companies must submit to Mercantile Registry, company’s data have been grouped into three large subgroups and within activity branches. 3. Results. The Orange economy revenues and earnings have contributed at a higher growth rate than of the economy as a whole. It has achieved higher profitability ratios on a lasting basis over time. Although, there are differences between the various activities included in this sector 4. Conclusions. The Orange economy can be considered as an engine and a generator of sustained growth over time. Furthermore, results obtained show that the Orange economy is a sector that is resilient against crisis.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose In order to guide sustainability research on the sharing economy, the purpose of this paper is to develop a comprehensive framework that captures the wide range of activities and business models that are considered to be part of the sharing economy. Design/methodology/approach Based on a systematic literature review and a content analysis, existing typologies are identified and analyzed for their conceptual intersections. Finally, categorizations from 43 documents are integrated into one framework. Findings Four main dimensions are identified as being used in different contexts to characterize sharing systems and were combined to form one comprehensive typology: shared good or service, market structure, market orientation, and industry sector. Originality/value The proposed typology is able to distinguish sharing activities based on their similarities and differences. Social, economic, and communicational avenues for the term “sharing” are merged into a conceptual foundation of the sharing economy. This enables researchers, practitioners, and policy makers to position their projects in the broad field of sharing. By discussing inherent tensions with regard to sustainability of the sharing economy, the offered categorizations can help to guide future research and policy intervention. Last but not least, professional managers should find valuable ideas for new business models.

Abstract (sommario):
The rise of the gig economy, also known as the platform economy, has compelled businesses to reconsider their relationships with their various stakeholders, including gig workers that are sometimes referred to as independent contractors. This has been especially noticeable in the on-demand delivery sector. This article examines how stakeholders in this sector are addressing social supply chain sustainability issues. We investigated measures taken by companies in the on-demand delivery sector between 2016 and 2020 using documentary research and content analysis. Based on stakeholder theory, we show that the perceived influence (or lack thereof) of gig workers is crucial in addressing social sustainability challenges. Our findings also indicate that delivery businesses are more concerned with working conditions than with equal rights issues, which we believe should be addressed equally. The paper sheds light on the management of social issues within the gig economy and opens a branch of opportunities for further studies on supply chain sustainability in the platform economy. Ultimately, this paper provides guidance to gig stakeholders on how to better contribute to social sustainability.
