I have just completed a year living in the Fifth Arondissement while occupying the French American Foundation's Chair of American Civilization at the Ecole des hautes etudes en sciences sociales. If my sojourn does not licence me to play Tocqueville to the Americans, it does let me watch my fellow Americans from a distance and the culturally distant French from close up.

The Gilded Age and Progressive Era witnessed the largest influx of American architecture students to the Paris Ecole des Beaux-Arts. The U.S. contingent—120 students admitted in the 1890s, 154 in the 1900s—accounted for 10 to nearly 20 percent of incoming students each year. This illustrated essay uses projects prepared by these students to introduce the major features and principles of the Ecole's architecture curriculum, in particular the physical and instructional framework of the atelier and the medium of the concours. The essay presents a step-by-step selection of projects by American students admitted between 1890 and 1909. These range from a twelve-hour sketch problem required for the admission competition to a diplôme (masters' thesis). Beyond introducing the Beaux-Arts method of instruction, these prints provide insight into the subsequent American career of their authors and thus of American architecture and urban design overall, given the enormous influence exerted by the Ecole des Beaux Arts and its anciens élèves. Drawings requested from Ecole students were not just artfully composed and brilliantly rendered pictures. They were problem-solving endeavors. Former students preserved them not only as study models, but also as status symbols, even trophies.

French artist and poet Camille Bryen (1907–1977) is usually, and always very briefly, cited as a member of the post-Second World War (1939–1945) lyrical abstraction trend in Paris, often designated as Ecole de Paris or Nouvelle Ecole de Paris, Tachisme, or Informel. Bryen painted hybrids of plants, animals, rocks, and humans, mixing the organic with the inorganic, evoking cellular agglomerations, geological structures, or prehistorical drawings. He emphasized the materiality and the process through thick impasto, visible brushstrokes, and automatic drawing. Along with other abstract painters in post-war Paris, Bryen’s work is usually associated with vague humanist interpretations and oversimplified existentialism. If the above statement is true for a number of his peers, it does not correspond to the way he envisaged his art, and art in general. His views are reflected in his intense theoretical reflection revolving around the term of “Abhumanism”, too often completely ignored in the critical literature. Coined by his close friend, the playwright and writer Jacques Audiberti, Abhumanism claimed the inconsistency of a fallacious and pretentious humanism faced with the rawness and cruelty of recent history, and called for a revision of the humanist subject, including anthropocentrism. Both men considered art, namely painting, as a salvatory vitalist “abhumanist” act. In this paper, which is the first consistent publication on Bryen in English, I will argue that Abhumanism is essential for the understanding of the artist’s work because, separating him from the School of Paris, it is, first, harmonious with his artistic production—paintings and writings; second, it clarifies Bryen’s place in the history of the avant-garde, in the wake of Dada and Surrealism. This essay will contribute to the re-evaluation not only of Bryen’s still underestimated œuvre, but more largely to the reappraisal of the artistic life in Paris after the Second World War.

Born in Calais in 1921, Gérard Debreu died on the last day of 2004 in the Paris area where he spent the last years of his life. He graduated from Ecole Normale Supérieure, one of the elite schools in France with a strong program in mathematics. While studying there he came to economics through the influence of Maurice Allais, who was teaching economics in a neighboring school, Ecole des Mines. In 1949 a Rockefeller fellowship allowed him to visit American universities and, in particular, the University of Chicago. He was then offered a position of research associate by the Cowles Commission for Research in Economics. In 1962, Gérard Debreu accepted a position of professor of economics (transformed later into a joint professorship of economics and mathematics) at the University of California, Berkeley. He was President of the Econometric Society in 1971 and received the Nobel prize in 1983.

Francois Arago studied maths at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris in order to be an artillery officer. His adventurous experiences with astronomy during what we would call a gap year in 1806-08 during the Napoleonic Wars inspired him into a scientific career in which he became the scientific director of the Paris Observatory and the Secretary of the Academie des Sciences. He introduced Foucault’s pendulum, leading to crowds of Parisians gawping at the rotation of the Earth and arranged for the French nation to buy Daguerre’s invention. He was briefly Head of State in 1848, a level attained by few other astronomers. I will outline his adventures and career as an exemplar of the inspiration of astronomy.

Abstract This contribution is dedicated to the French philologist Charles Bonnier (1861–1926), who dared to criticize the philological doxa of his time. As a result, Paul Meyer (1840–1917), one of the most influential philologists, refused his thesis at the École des chartes (Paris). Bonnier went to Germany, where he completed his doctorate at the University of Halle under the supervision of Hermann Suchier (1848–1914) ; later on he held teaching positions in England (Oxford, Liverpool). While Bonnier is regarded today as a pioneer of modern scripta research, his ideas and academic career still remain widely unknown.

Thirty years ago I published in Medium Aevum a short article entitled "Words against Women." It was a brief edition and commentary on some anti-feminist lines found in the manuscript Vatican Reg. lat. 1659. The lines were used to fill up an empty column and seem to have been linked to a longer passage in the Vatican copy of a moralising debate poem, the Petit Plet by the Anglo-Norman poet Chardri. The Petit Plet lines are marked in this manuscript by drawings of hands with the index finger pointing to particular couplets that deal with the unflattering characteristics of women. If there are many medieval texts that clearly see women in an unfavourable light, there are, however, a few that speak out in praise of women; in this paper I present some aspects of one of those, an unpublished poem in defence of women that Professor Francoise Vielliard of the Ecole nationale des Chartes and I are in the process of editing. Though this paper may be intended primarily to remind us of that rather small literary current, it also underlines the value of hunting through manuscripts ostensibly devoted to one subject but where marginalia and fill-in material can reveal a few unknown gems which often pass unrecorded—or at least passed over in the standard catalogues.

When the Bibliothèque Nationale moves into the new Bibliothèque de France, leaving behind only six specialised departments, the opportunity will arise to use the buildings of the Rue de Richelieu site to bring together a group of art history libraries and research centres. Priority will be given to the remaining Departments of the Bibliothèque Nationale, which need more space than they presently occupy; they will be joined by the inter-university library of art and archaeology from the Rue Michelet, the central library of the national museums, from the Louvre, and the older collections of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. The architectural holdings of the latter might be identified as the foundation for a major architectural collection to satisfy the demand for such a library in Paris. David Georges Emmerich taught morphology at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, and later at the Paris-La Villette School of Architecture from 1965 to 1990. An architect and engineer by training, convinced of the modern movement's inability to provide mankind with the architectural space needed, his research led to constructive systems using cheap, industrialised components, with wide scope for self-help housing as well as a broad range of architectural structures. His extensive study of regular partitioning in space, natural shapes, the resistance of shapes and combinatorial analysis led him to developing stereometric systems; and, more specifically, to the invention of self-tensioning, or tensegrity, structures.

After more than 50 years dedicated to scientific research and to the dissemination of knowledge, Dr Jacques Labeyrie recently passed away at the age of 91. Upon graduating from the Ecole Supérieure de Physique et Chimie Industrielle de la Ville de Paris (1940–43), he became the assistant to Frédéric Joliot-Curie at the Collège de France. With Joliot's recommendation, he was recruited in 1946 to the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA), where he stayed until his retirement in 1985. He was named Head of the Section d'Electronique Physique (later known as the Service d'Electronique Physique) of the CEA in 1955, which he managed until 1982.

The French Ecole Supérieure Libre des Sciences Commercial Appliquées (ESLSCA) in Paris is one of the most important global culturally diverse private business schools in terms of its number of branches and its history. ESLSCA has had a branch in Cairo in Egypt for about 17 years. This qualitative study seeks to focus on ESLSCA-Egypt branch to investigate the extent to which cultural diversity is included in its MBA curricula. The main methods for collecting data are document analysis, a number of semi-structured interviews, and a review of relevant literature. The study findings have meaningful implications for the practices of business schools’ education and training

French interest in India and neighbouring regions dates back to the 17th century. Oriental studies developed as a distinct discipline through the 19th century, stimulated in France by French colonial activities in Indochina, and culminating at the end of the century in the emergence of Oriental art and archaeology as a subject in its own right. The Commission Archéologique de l’Indochine was established in 1898, and became the Ecole Francaise d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) in 1901 with responsibility for listing and protecting antiquities in the French colonies; its library in Paris constitutes a major resource. France’s relationship with Afghanistan facilitated French archaeological activities in that country until 1975; archaeological finds enabled the Musée Guimet to extend its scope and to become a museum of Asiatic art, and its library became and remains the major library in Paris so far as Asian art is concerned. The library of the Ecole du Louvre supports courses on Asian art, while the Bibliothèque Nationale and such libraries as the Bibliothèque Forney also contain valuable collections. Photographic collections in some of these institutions have not been so well looked after as books, and their condition is a matter of concern. Unpublished archival materials are also held in some of the same institutions. The resources of a number of smaller, specialised institutes are currently being brought together in a new building under the name ‘Institute d’Asie du Collège de France’, while some other collections are being linked with the library of the EFEO to create a ‘Bibliothèque d’Asie’. Meanwhile it remains to be seen whether the new Bibliothèque Nationale des Arts will include the arts of Asia within its scope. No library in France has responsibility for modern Indian art. The original Ecole royale dramatique, forerunner of the Paris Conservatoire, was opened in 1786, which makes it an institution of truly venerable antiquity compared to our own stripling Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, founded relatively recently, in 1904, by Sir Herbert Tree. Its establishment on the eve of the French Revolution came as the culmination of thirty years of projects, argument and disappointment. The idea appears to have been first mooted by three of the leading actors of the Comédie-Française Lekain, Préville and Bellecourt, who on 4 September 1756 appended their signatures to a ‘Mémoire précis, tendant à constater la nécessité d'établir une Ecole Royale, pour y faire des élèves qui puissent exercer l'art de la déclamation dans le tragique, et s'instruire des moyens qui forment le bon acteur comique.’ In their exordium, the authors drew particular attention to the fact that the provincial theatre companies, which had traditionally formed a reservoir of acting talent for the Comédie-Française, could no longer be relied on to maintain the supply. They offered no explanation why this should be, beyond hinting that the quality of these tributary companies was declining. The real reason for the crisis in recruitment, which was undoubtedly making itself felt during the closing years of Louis XV's reign, can be deduced from the pages of Papil-lon de La Ferté's Journal, beginning with the entry for 28 February 1767, in which he reproduces the gist of a memorandum he submitted at this time to the Due de Duras, one of the Gentilshommes de la Chambre principally concerned with the welfare of the Comédie-Française. It was largely a matter of relative earnings. A good provincial actor could count on an annual income of some 7–8,000 livres; if he were outstanding enough to warrant an order being despatched demanding he should make his début in the capital, he would, rather than try and make ends meet on an income of 1200 livres which was all the Comédie-Française could offer him, as like as not escape abroad. In addition, as La Ferté discovered when, in the summer of 1767, he left on a recruiting drive to the French-speaking provinces of the Netherlands, there was considerable reluctance to take up a position in Paris where, as he reported to Duras on his return, ‘les comediens les plus mediocres que j'ai vus dans mon voyage m'avaient annoncé qu'ils renonceraient plutôt au théâtre, que de venir s'exposer aux cabales des Comédiens Français et aux mauvais traitements que l'on faisait subir aux débutants’ – a reference to the notorious hostility of the permanent actors towards newcomers who might have designs on the parts in which they fancied themselves.

Un travail d’édition scientifique réalisé entre 2015 et mars 2017 par l’École nationale des chartes et les Archives nationales avait montré le grand intérêt, pour la recherche en histoire et la connaissance des soldats français de la Grande Guerre et de leur état d’esprit, des testaments de guerre olographes déposés au sein des minutes notariales. L’étude portait cependant seulement sur un échantillon de testaments, alors que le minutier central des notaires de Paris et chaque service départemental d’archives susceptibles de détenir d’autres documents de ce type. Le programme d’identification, de description, de numérisation et d’édition structurée en XML/ TEI de ces testaments inédits ne pouvait être poursuivi sans des moyens humains et financiers supplémentaires. À l’initiative de l’université de Cergy-Pontoise, un partenariat s’est construit, associant notamment l’École nationale des chartes, les Archives nationales et les Archives départementales des Yvelines, qui avaient par ailleurs lancé plusieurs opérations participatives dans le cadre des commémorations de la Grande Guerre. Les partenaires ont parié que des bénévoles du grand public pourraient produire ensemble l’édition scientifique structurée des testaments, après que ceux-ci auraient été identifiés en salle de lecture par d’autres bénévoles accompagnés par les archivistes. Pour cela une plateforme web de transcription collaborative qui soit capable de guider les bénévoles dans leur travail sans renoncer aux exigences du travail scientifique d’édition en TEI a été conçue. L’équipe projet s’est engagée dans des processus d’accompagnement des bénévoles qui dépassent le strict cadre du contrôle de qualité des transcriptions sur la plateforme, et qui prennent la forme de rencontres, d’ateliers et d’échanges divers, sources de nouveaux liens.
