Electricity companies around the world are constantly seeking ways to provide electricity more safely and efficiently while reducing the negative impact on the environment. Mineral oils have been the most popular transformer insulation, having excellent electrical insulating properties, but have many problems such as high flammability, significant cleaning problems, and are toxic to fish and wildlife. This paper presents an alternative approach to mineral oil: a transformer design that is clean and provides better performance and environmental benefits. A 50 kVA, 34.5/0.4 kV gas insulated distribution transformer was designed and evaluated using the COMSOL Multiphysics environment. R410A was used as insulation material. R410A is a near-azeotropic mixture of difluoromethane (CH2F2, called R-32) and pentafluoro ethane (C2HF5, called R-125), which is used as a refrigerant in air conditioning applications. It has excellent properties including environmentally friendly, no-ozone depletion, low greenhouse effect, non-explosive and non-flammable, First, the breakdown voltage of the selected gas was determined. The electrostatic and thermal properties of the R410A gas insulated transformer were investigated in the COMSOL environment. The simulation results for the performance of oil and SF6 gas insulated transformers using the same model were compared. The gas-insulated transformer is believed to have equivalent performance and is an environmentally friendly alternative to current oil-based transformers.

Abstract (sommario):
The use of an old fuel in a new form has progressed at a rapid space for the last couple of years, due to its several advantages. The fuel in question is natural gas and, its new form, is liquefied natural gas designated as LNG. LNG transported in cryogenic vessels offers several advantages over pipe line transport of natural gas when the gas consuming areas are far away from the gas producing areas. Moreover, LNG as an automobile fuel has also a definite edge over other fuel. However, the LNG age in India is of very recent origin and, only in January, 2004, the first LNG cargo had reached an Indian port in the state of Gujarat. In this juncture, this paper presents an effective study on the characteristics of LNG, advantages and disadvantages of various natural gas liquefaction cycles, the present state of affairs of LNG in India, its import and CNG versus LNG as an automobile fuel, eco-friendliness of natural gas fuel etc. It also discusses the potential of natural gas generation from different sources, and the need for indigenous development of LNG technology for import substitution in the Indian context.

Abstract (sommario):
The present study of a freezing system has developed based on an air conditioning system, whose purpose is to take advantage of the technological transfer of cold producing equipment for food storage and conservation uses. The installed capacity of 9000 BTU/Hr was considered for the choice of equipment. We studied the freezing process of fish, water, and the preservation of legumes with a volume of 1 kg per product individually. The freezing temperature has evaluated with a mechanical compression refrigeration system of Gas R22 with temperature interactions of 29.6 ° C to -12 ° C. and monitored with a Proportional Integrative Derivative (PID) controller. For production cost, the equipment was mostly made of its parts and pieces with recycling material. A descriptive experimental design has carried out, for the verification of results. The equipment managed to reach chamber temperatures of -13 ° C from 20 minutes once the equipment (compressor) has turned on under specific product descriptions.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The paper considers the possibility of using a pulsed discharge in cesium as an environmentally friendly high quality light source for lighting industrial premises of railway transport facilities. The use of cesium filling of standard sapphire burners of high-pressure sodium lamps and a pulsed mode of electric power supply of the discharge to create a light source has been substantiated. A mathematical model of a high-pressure pulsed discharge in cesium is formulated on the basis of the radiative gas dynamics equations. The discharge was simulated and it was shown that it is possible to create a plasma with a temperature 4000 -7000 K and a pressure of 0.5 - 1.5 at m with the power supplied to the discharge ∼ 100 W/cm in the steady-state combustion mode. The dependence of the discharge lighting characteristics on the amplitude of the current pulses and the amount of cesium in the gas discharge tube is analyzed. It is shown that in a wide range of currents and plasma densities, the color rendering index of the discharge radiation Ra> 95 with luminous efficacy ηV ∼ 70lm/W and more. The average luminous flux emitted per unit length of the discharge column is ∼ 104 lm/cm. The color temperature of the discharge radiation can vary over a wide range of values Tc∼ 3000÷4500 K. It is shown that the color coordinates Xc,Yc of discharge radiation are close to the values Xc,Yc of a blackbody. The use of such a source in conditions of a short daylight hours will make it possible to create practically solar illumination of large production areas.

Abstract (sommario):
The wastewater generated from the oil and gas sector is one of the major environmental issues. Varieties of techniques are employed for the treatment of generated wastewater. In this work, an attempt has been made to treat industrial saline wastewater from the oil and gas industry using a combination of synthesized biopolymer, chitosan, with graphene. Chitosan has been synthesized from a bioresource using marine spent. Chitosan was characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Batch experiments were conducted by varying the composition of graphene viz 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 w/w with respect to a fixed amount of chitosan. The percentage removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity, and oil and grease were evaluated. A combination of chitosan and graphene has effectively removed the pollutants present in oil produced water (OPW) compared to chitosan alone. The maximum percentage removal efficiencies of COD (84%), TDS (91%), TSS (80%), turbidity (95%), and oil and grease (99.9%) were obtained for a mixture of chitosan (0.5 g/100 mL) and 5 wt% graphenes. The Freundlich equilibrium isotherm model suited the adsorption data well.

Dans ce travail de doctorat, une étude théorique et expérimentale systématique a été menée sur l'isolation du mélange de gaz C4F7N-CO2-O2 respectueux de l'environnement et ses caractéristiques de décomposition et de biosécurité sous défauts électriques et thermiques. Sur la base de la méthode de dynamique moléculaire ReaxFF, le processus de décomposition thermique du mélange gazeux sous différentes teneurs en O2 et températures est simulé. En combinant les résultats simulés avec des essais de décomposition thermique, le processus cinétique de décomposition thermique du mélange gazeux et le mécanisme d'évolution de ses sous-produits dans différentes conditions sont révélés. En même temps, le mécanisme d'influence de la teneur en O2 sur la tension de claquage et les valeurs caractéristiques statistiques du mélange C4F7N-CO2-O2 pour des décharges partielles sont analysés et le mécanisme d'influence de différents facteurs sur la génération et l'inhibition des gaz et des sous-produits solides au cours du processus de décomposition par décharge du mélange gazeux est clarifié. En conclusion, sur la base des résultats de simulation et expérimentaux, nous proposons la quantité optimale d'additif O2 et les composants caractéristiques de diagnostic du mélange gazeux C4F7N-CO2-O2 pour les défauts des équipements isolés au gaz moyenne tension ; nous testons la biosécurité du C4F7N et de ses produits de décomposition après l'exposition à l'arc, puis évaluons la faisabilité, la sécurité de l'application du mélange de gaz C4F7N-CO2-O2 dans l'équipement en combinant avec les caractéristiques isolantes et de décomposition électrique et thermique du mélange de gaz C4F7N-CO2-O2 et, les résultats de la biosécurité
In this doctoral work, a systematic theoretical and experimental study has been carried out on the insulation of environmentally friendly C4F7N-CO2-O2 gas mixture and on its decomposition characteristics and biosafety under electrical and thermal faults. Based on the ReaxFF molecular dynamics method, the thermal decomposition process of the gas mixture under different O2 contents and temperatures is simulated. The kinetic process of the thermal decomposition of the gas mixture and the evolution mechanism of its by-products under different conditions are revealed by combining with thermal decomposition tests. Meanwhile, the influence mechanism of O2 content on the breakdown voltage and partial discharge statistical characteristic values of the C4F7N-CO2-O2 mixture is analyzed, and the influence mechanism of different factors on the generation and inhibition of gas and solid by-products during the discharge decomposition process of the gas mixture is clarified. In conclusion, based on the simulation and experimental results, we propose the optimal O2 additive amount and fault diagnosis characteristic components of C4F7N-CO2-O2 gas mixture for medium-voltage gas-insulated equipmentwe test the biosafety of C4F7N and its arc decomposition products, and then evaluate the feasibility and safety of applying C4F7N-CO2-O2 gas mixture in equipment by combining with the insulating and electrical and thermal decomposition characteristics of C4F7N-CO2-O2 gas mixture and the results of the biosafety

Dans ce travail de thèse de doctorat, des études expérimentales et théoriques sont réalisées sur les caractéristiques de décomposition du mélange gazeux C5F10O/N2/O2 à l'interface gaz-solide de matériaux métalliques et sous l'action d'une décharge électrique dans un appareil de coupure électrique. La faisabilité et la sécurité de son utilisation sont évaluées en combinaison avec la biosécurité du gaz C5F10O et des produits de décomposition du gaz plasmagène. Compte tenu du contact long entre le mélange gazeux C5F10O/N2/O2 et les matériaux internes de l'équipement de coupure électrique pendant son fonctionnement, la stabilité de l'interaction gaz-solide du mélange gazeux avec les métaux couramment utilisés (cuivre, aluminium et argent), à l'intérieur de l'équipement est caractérisé, et le mécanisme d'interaction gaz-solide entre le mélange gazeux C5F10O et les matériaux métalliques est précisé. Un défaut thermique peut également se produire pendant le fonctionnement de l'équipement. Les caractéristiques typiques de la décharge et de la décomposition par défaut thermique du mélange gazeux C5F10O/N2/O2 contenant différentes concentrations d'oxygène sont identifiées. La composition et les processus de création des produits de décomposition du mélange gazeux sont obtenues, et la corrélation entre les types et le contenu des produits de décomposition caractéristiques et les types de défaut, ainsi que la réaction de l'oxygène vers les produits de décomposition du mélange gazeux C5F10O et le mécanisme d'inhibition de la précipitation des produits solides sont analysés. Sur la base de ce travail, nous proposons un schéma d'optimisation de la stabilité de la couche protectrice argent- cuivre est proposé pour le cuivre avec une faible stabilité gaz-solide du gaz C5F10O/N2/O2. In this doctoral thesis work, experimental and theoretical studies are carried out on the decomposition characteristics of C5F10O/N2/O2 gas mixture at the gas-solid interface of metal materials and under the discharge and thermal action, and the feasibility and safety of its application are evaluated in combination with the biosafety of C5F10O gas and arc decomposition products of C5F10O/N2/O2. Considering the long-term contact between C5F10O/N2/O2 gas mixture and the internal materials of the equipment during normal operation, the gas-solid interaction stability of C5F10O/N2/O2 gas mixture with commonly used metal copper, aluminum and silver inside the equipment is evaluated, and the mechanism of gas-solid interface interaction between C5F10O gas mixture and metal materials is clarified. Discharge and thermal fault may also occur during the long-term operation of the equipment. The failure decomposition mechanism of C5F10O/N2/O2 gas mixture is studied through experiments and simulations. The typical discharge and thermal fault decomposition characteristics of C5F10O/N2/O2 gas mixture containing different concentrations of oxygen are revealed. The composition and generation rules of decomposition products of the gas mixture under the faults are obtained, and the correlation between the types and contents of characteristic decomposition products and the fault types, as well as the regulation of oxygen to C5F10O gas mixture decomposition products and the inhibition mechanism of solid product precipitation are analyzed. In conclusion, based on the simulation and experimental results, we proposed the stability optimization scheme of silver-plated protective layer on copper surface for metal copper material with poor gas-solid stability of C5F10O/N2/O2 gas. We extracted the characteristic products characterizing the discharge and thermal fault of C5F10O/N2/O2 gas mixture, which provided a reference for the on-line fault monitoring based on the decomposition components. We tested the biosafety of C5F10O and its arc decomposition products, and evaluated its application safety based on the discharge and thermal fault decomposition characteristics of C5F10O/N2/O2 gas mixture, and proposed targeted safety protection measures and suggestions

Problem: Although modern people are more aware than ever about the environment and responsible sourcing of raw materials, a gap exists between consumers’ preferences on eco-friendly products and their actual purchasing behaviour. Companies operating in the electronic mobile device industry have been unable to bridge this value-action gap and relatively little research has been conducted on this industry.   Topic & Purpose: This paper aims to investigate and discover the preferences and purchasing behaviour of young Swedish consumers operating in the electronic mobile device industry. This paper will focus on purchasing intentions, willingness to pay, and identify which consumption values have the highest effects on these consumers’ intent to purchase eco-friendly mobile devices.   Method: A descriptive strategy and a deductive approach were applied in order to understand the impact of consumption values, CSR, brand image, and product information on young Swedish consumers. Eight hypotheses were developed to test the influence of each of these factors. The empirical study was was based on a quantitative approach and the data collection was made through an online survey and face-to-face interviews targeted towards young Swedish consumers between the ages of 18 and 28. The data analysis was conducted by using the SPSS program in order to gain numerical values which could be used to analyse the validity of each hypothesis.   Conclusion: This study discovered two out of five consumption values to have a clearly higher impact on young Swedish consumers’ purchasing intentions towards eco-friendly mobile devices. These values were emotional and conditional value, indicating that environmental awareness and situational factors have the highest influence on shaping the consumption values of these consumers. In addition, brand image was seen to be an influential factor for these consumers, as opposed to CSR, or product information. Based on these findings, suggestions for further research were presented.

AbstractClimate change and global warming have significantly threatened food security and the global supply chain. As the trade volume of bulk commodity grains has been growing steadily, ensuring quality while minimizing losses during long-distance shipping between warm and cold seawater has become a critical issue. An evidence-based approach to provide quantified implications is needed to illustrate a roadmap toward a net-zero-carbon society. This study applied the GTAP-E-Power model to examine the economic and welfare impacts of eco-friendly cooling system implementation on sea transportation in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. By creating scenarios of Japan’s technology change calibrated from SPIAS-e and capital-use subsidy on sectors of electronics, solar power, and sea transportation as cooling system implementation, the simulation results showed a GDP growth of 0.09% in Japan and 0.11% in Australia and New Zealand. Moreover, Japan's welfare could improve by USD 4,219 million, while greenhouse gas emissions might be reduced to 8.4 million tons, equivalent to 0.9% of the total emission of Japan’s sea transportation sector.

Rooftops offer prime real estate for solar panel installation, optimizing sun exposure, and maximizing clean energy generation at the point of use. For installing solar panels, inspecting the suitability of building rooftops is essential because faulty roof structures or obstructions can cause a significant reduction in power generation. Computer vision-based methods proved helpful in such inspections in large urban areas. However, previous studies mainly focused on image-based checking, which limits their usability in 3D applications such as roof slope inspection and building height determination required for proper solar panel installation. This study proposes a GIS-integrated urban point cloud segmentation method to overcome these challenges. Specifically, given a point cloud of a metropolitan area, first, it is localized in the GIS map. Then a deep-learning-based point cloud classification model is trained to detect buildings and rooftops. Finally, a rule-based checking determines the building height, roof slopes, and their appropriateness for solar panel installation. While testing at the National Taiwan University campus, the proposed method demonstrates its efficacy in assessing urban rooftops for solar panel installation

AbstractThis chapter focuses on the question of why environmentally conscious individuals find it difficult to behave in a correspondingly eco-friendly way. This phenomenon is referred to in the literature as the “value-action gap.” In this study, the definition of this gap is further expanded by considering individual intention. The discrepancies between environmental values, intention, and behavior are explored in the context of two environmentally relevant behaviors—mobility and consumption—using qualitative interviews. Firstly, key structural and intrapersonal obstacles to pro-environmental behavior are identified. Secondly, individual needs and requirements for facilitating eco-friendly behavior are addressed. Finally, strategies and potentials for pro-environmental change in society are discussed.

Abstract Amid concerns over negative the environmental impacts of offshore chemicals, Baker Hughes explored new chemistries to develop environmentally friendly kinetic hydrate inhibitors (KHI). Our efforts were focused on improving biodegradability and toxicity of KHIs to meet environmental protection requirements, as well as mitigating challenges in field applications. A novel KHI design with branched polymers containing sugar alcohol ester groups as linkages, was proposed and synthesized. The new KHI polymer demonstrated > 20% biodegradability and >100 mg/L toxicity to seawater algae, and it also exhibited competitive or even better KHI performance to traditional non-biodegradable KHI products. Additionally, new KHI showed improved stability in water/brine at elevated temperatures as compared to traditional KHI products, which might mitigate concerns on polymer deposition at high temperatures.

Abstract Drilling fluid is an inseparable component of drilling oil and gas wells and circulated from the day of spudding to the day of completing a well. Drilling fluid consists of a variety of chemicals to provide various properties to drilling fluid such as viscosity, fluid loss control, emulsion stability, lubricity, etc. Developing chemicals that are eco-friendly and sustainable to provide the above-mentioned properties to drilling fluid is a significant step forward taken towards sustainability and reducing carbon footprint besides suitability for aquifers and offshore environments. Several fatty acid-based products play a crucial role in drilling fluids additives development as fatty acids offer eco-friendly and bio-degradable properties. Triglycerides present in vegetable oil is a potential source of fatty acids and their derivatives. Used cooking oil (UCO) provides a perpetual and sustainable source of raw material for various types of eco-friendly additives development. Used cooking oil is subjected to simple chemical modification of base hydrolysis process and mixture of fatty acids have been obtained after completing a sequence of clean-up process of reaction mixture. The fatty acids obtained are eco-friendly, bio-degradable and non-toxic. Due to technical, economic and environmental benefits, we have conducted several research projects to develop various chemicals from used cooking oil for oil and gas field applications. Fatty acid-based products mainly used in drilling fluids as lubricants to reduce torque and drag for water-based mud. In case of oil-based mud systems, fatty acid derived products are used as emulsifiers, wetting agents and rheology modifiers. However, these products have been either mixture of fatty acids and their derivatives or only derivatives of fatty acids. In our study, we have used the mixture of fatty acids obtained from chemical conversion of UCO for applications as lubricant for water-based mud and emulsifier and rheology modifier for invert emulsion oil-based mud systems. This paper describes the chemicals process for converting used cooking oil to fatty acids by base hydrolysis reaction in the first section. Application of synthesized fatty acids for water-based and oil-based mud formulation as lubricants, emulsifiers and rheology modifiers have been discussed in the second part of the paper.

Abstract Many challenges and limitations are experienced while treating the produced water in oil fields, due to large volumes of water produced together with oil. In this paper, we propose a new method to treat produced water, by integrating humidification and de-humidification desalination (HDH) unit with waste heat, extracted from abandoned oil and gas wells. This solution is based on circulating the produced water through abandoned wells (both vertical and horizontal wells) and heat them up to 60-80°C so that the heated water can be directly used as hot feed water into the HDH unit. This eliminates either electricity or power requirements from an external source thereby significantly lowering the energy requirements. The direct use of hot produced water at the desired temperature range allows for better performance of the HDH desalination unit, while reducing the operating cost, besides minimizing CO2 emissions to the environment. The use of heat extracted from abandoned oil and gas wells in the form of geothermal energy enables the utilization of waste heat associated with existing wells, which is already available in most of the oil fields. The proposed method therefore provides a sustainable renewable energy solution for produced water desalination using HDH processes.

The paper presents possible ways of utilizing technogenic waste – fluorine anhydrite – by its use in production of dry mortars and piece goods from lightweight concrete with expanded polystyrene, as a organic filler, for low-rise construc-tion. The developed dry mortars are based on fluorine anhydrite binder and complex modifier comprising curing activator (sulfate or alkaline) and finely dispersed additive. The fluorine anhydrite-based compositions have improved physical and performance characteristics, including the improved strength and average density and reduced water absorption compared to the control composition. The developed lightweight anhydrite polystyrene concrete has the density grade of 700 kg/m3 and good vapor and gas permeability. The concrete is stabile while using and fire safe, because each granule of expanded poly-styrene is coated with anhydrite matrix, and has the strength sufficient for structural and heat insulating slabs and blocks. All mentioned compositions are eco-friendly and are in great demand for low-rise construction. Therefore the manufacturing of these compositions will consume a large amount of technogenic waste and will reduce the environmental load on the region where the waste is located.

Abstract Gas hydrate inhibition through the use of chemicals has been ongoing over the years and these chemicals are toxic, synthetic and expensive, adding to the cost of doing oil and gas business, and also leads to environmental degradation. The call for greener environment has necessitated the search for more eco-friendly gas hydrate inhibitors. This paper takes a look at the use of a bio-extract in its unmodified state to inhibit gas hydrate using a locally made mini flow loop for gas hydrate studies. The bio extract was compared to a conventional gas hydrate inhibitor 2-Di(methylaminoethyl)methacrylate (2-DMAEM). For all the weight percentages considered (0.01-0.05wt%), the bio-extract had better pressure profiles. At the end of the experiment which lasted for 120 minutes, this is attributed to the fact that the pressures in the system were more regulated which prevented rapid gas dissolution in water. The Bio-extract is plant based, locally available in the commercial quantity and is eco-friendly so it should be harnessed as gas hydrate inhibitors in lieu of the expensive and imported conventional hydrate inhibitor 2-DMAEM which non-eco-friendly.
