Abstract (sommario):
This paper, proposes a method that by generating a pseudo random pattern, which will work as the watermark and the watermark is embedded during the quantization procedure. Then WSR (watermarking survival rate) is used to search for the optimized truncation points by running the EBCOT process, the truncation point is adjusted to stay at the bit plane boundary and it is used as the dividing point to split magnitude bits of wavelet coefficients, which is then sent to EBCOT for encoding. The final output is the J2K coded watermarked image. The results show that watermarked EBCOT image is nearly rate-distortion optimized, the decoder can recover the original image, the watermark can be detected effectively, and it is robust against geometric attacking such as rotating attack, cropping and scaling attack.

Abstract (sommario):
Embedded block coding with optimised truncation (EBCOT) is a key algorithm in digital cinema (DC) distribution system. Though several high speed EBCOT architectures exist, all are not capable of meeting the DC specifications. To meet this challenge, the relationship between contents of a code block (CB) and context generation is studied. Our study reveals that it is difficult to predict number of contexts generated in a bit plane. Even the nature of number of contexts produced varies from CB to CB. In such a situation, it is difficult to ensure the frame rate requirement of DC. To avoid this uncertainty, a pass parallel, concurrent sample coding EBCOT architecture is proposed in this paper. It is capable of encoding one bit plane in 288 clock cycles under any circumstances. This design is prototyped on XC4VLX80-12 FPGA with multiple clock domains. After synthesizing, the bit plane coder (BPC) and MQ coder operate at 450 MHz and 123 MHz, respectively. In order to maintain synchronism among different clock domains, the BPC and MQ coder units are operated at 432 MHz and 108 MHz, respectively. This entails that the proposed design is capable of processing size 57 DC frames in a second.

This paper presents a novel implementation of the JPEG2000 standard as a system on a chip (SoC). While most of the research in this field centers on acceleration of the EBCOT Tier I encoder, this work focuses on an embedded solution for EBCOT Tier II. Specifically, this paper proposes using an embedded softcore processor to perform Tier II processing as the back end of an encoding pipeline. The Altera NIOS II processor is chosen for the implementation and is coupled with existing embedded processing modules to realize a fully embedded JPEG2000 encoder. The design is synthesized on a Stratix IV FPGA and is shown to out perform other comparable SoC implementations by 39% in computation time.

Abstract (sommario):
JPEG2000 is a wavelet transform based image compression and coding standard. It provides superior rate-distortion performance when compared to the previous JPEG standard. In addition JPEG2000 provides four dimensions of scalability-distortion, resolution, spatial, and color. These superior features make JPEG2000 ideal for use in power and bandwidth limited mobile applications like urban search and rescue. Such applications require a fast, low power JPEG2000 encoder to be embedded on the mobile agent. This embedded encoder needs to also provide superior subjective quality to low bitrate images. This research addresses these two aspects of enhancing the performance of JPEG2000 encoders. The JPEG2000 standard includes a perceptual weighting method based on the contrast sensitivity function (CSF). Recent literature shows that perceptual methods based on subband standard deviation are also effective in image compression. This research presents two new perceptual weighting methods that combine information from both the human contrast sensitivity function as well as the standard deviation within a subband or code-block. These two new sets of perceptual weights are compared to the JPEG2000 CSF weights. The results indicate that our new weights performed better than the JPEG2000 CSF weights for high frequency images. Weights based solely on subband standard deviation are shown to perform worse than JPEG2000 CSF weights for all images at all compression ratios. Embedded block coding, EBCOT tier-1, is the most computationally intensive part of the JPEG2000 image coding standard. Past research on fast EBCOT tier-1 hardware implementations has concentrated on cycle efficient context formation. These pass-parallel architectures require that JPEG2000's three mode switches be turned on. While turning on the mode switches allows for arithmetic encoding from each coding pass to run independent of each other (and thus in parallel), it also disrupts the probability estimation engine of the arithmetic encoder, thus sacrificing coding efficiency for improved throughput. In this research a new fast EBCOT tier-1 design is presented: it is called the Split Arithmetic Encoder (SAE) process. The proposed process exploits concurrency to obtain improved throughput while preserving coding efficiency. The SAE process is evaluated using three methods: clock cycle estimation, multithreaded software implementation, a field programmable gate array (FPGA) hardware implementation. All three methods achieve throughput improvement; the hardware implementation exhibits the largest speedup, as expected. A high speed, task-parallel, multithreaded, software architecture for EBCOT tier-1 based on the SAE process is proposed. SAE was implemented in software on two shared-memory architectures: a PC using hyperthreading and a multi-processor non-uniform memory access (NUMA) machine. The implementation adopts appropriate synchronization mechanisms that preserve the algorithm's causality constraints. Tests show that the new architecture is capable of improving throughput as much as 50% on the NUMA machine and as much as 19% on a PC with two virtual processing units. A high speed, multirate, FPGA implementation of the SAE process is also proposed. The mismatch between the rate of production of data by the context formation (CF) module and the rate of consumption of data by the arithmetic encoder (AE) module is studied in detail. Appropriate choices for FIFO sizes and FIFO write and read capabilities are made based on the statistics obtained from test runs of the algorithm. Using a fast CF module, this implementation was able to achieve as much as 120% improvement in throughput.

This thesis is concerned with maximizing the coding efficiency, random accessibility and visual performance of scalable compressed video. The unifying theme behind this work is the use of finely embedded localized coding structures, which govern the extent to which these goals may be jointly achieved. The first part focuses on scalable volumetric image compression. We investigate 3D transform and coding techniques which exploit inter-slice statistical redundancies without compromising slice accessibility. Our study shows that the motion-compensated temporal discrete wavelet transform (MC-TDWT) practically achieves an upper bound to the compression efficiency of slice transforms. From a video coding perspective, we find that most of the coding gain is attributed to offsetting the learning penalty in adaptive arithmetic coding through 3D code-block extension, rather than inter-frame context modelling. The second aspect of this thesis examines random accessibility. Accessibility refers to the ease with which a region of interest is accessed (subband samples needed for reconstruction are retrieved) from a compressed video bitstream, subject to spatiotemporal code-block constraints. We investigate the fundamental implications of motion compensation for random access efficiency and the compression performance of scalable interactive video. We demonstrate that inclusion of motion compensation operators within the lifting steps of a temporal subband transform incurs a random access penalty which depends on the characteristics of the motion field. The final aspect of this thesis aims to minimize the perceptual impact of visible distortion in scalable reconstructed video. We present a visual optimization strategy based on distortion scaling which raises the distortion-length slope of perceptually significant samples. This alters the codestream embedding order during post-compression rate-distortion optimization, thus allowing visually sensitive sites to be encoded with higher fidelity at a given bit-rate. For visual sensitivity analysis, we propose a contrast perception model that incorporates an adaptive masking slope. This versatile feature provides a context which models perceptual significance. It enables scene structures that otherwise suffer significant degradation to be preserved at lower bit-rates. The novelty in our approach derives from a set of "perceptual mappings" which account for quantization noise shaping effects induced by motion-compensated temporal synthesis. The proposed technique reduces wavelet compression artefacts and improves the perceptual quality of video.

Dricksvatten är en essentiell del av ett hållbart samhälle. Därför är det viktigt att säkerställa säkert dricksvatten genom fungerande vattenreningsverk. En viktig förorening att behandla är NOM, som i sig är ofarligt men som kan producera farliga föroreningar. En teknik som används för behandling av NOM är kolfiltrering. Hur ökad flödeshastighet och ökad kontakttid påverkade kolfiltrens effektivitet undersöktes vid dricksvattenreningsverket Norrvatten. De undersökta parametrarna var partiklar, ultraviolett absorbans vid 254 nm, turbiditet, konduktivitet, fluorescent löst organiskt material, totalt organiskt kol, kemisk syreförbrukning, odlingsbara mikroorganismer och lukt. Tre kolfilter studerades vid olika flödeshastigheter; 190, 220, 250 och 280 L/s under ett dygn var. Samtidigt hade två filter ökad kontakttid på 60 och 76 % under sex veckor, medan ett filter fortsatte med den vanliga flödeshastigheten på 190 L/s. Utgående vatten från filtren analyserades för att se om dessa ändringar hade någon effekt på vattenreningen. Denna preliminära studie fann ingen signifikant effekt på kolfiltreringens rening på grund av ökad flödeshastighet eller uppehållstid. Detta kan vara en indikation på att kolfiltreringen kan hantera en framtida flödesökning och därmed vara en väsentlig del av en framtida expansionen av vattenreningsverket. De tecken som visade på att kolfiltren påverkades av ökningen av flödeshastigheter kunde förklaras av fluktuationer i inkommande vatten och skillnader mellan de olika filtren. I framtiden bör effekten av inkommande vatten studeras i detalj. En mer ingående analys av både inkommande och utgående vatten till kolfiltren bör utföras, där provtagning sker oftare för att bättre förstå fluktuationerna i inkommande föroreningskoncentrationer. Dessutom bör testerna upprepas för att se hur reningen skiljer sig från dag till dag. Hur kolfiltren hanterar ökade flödeshastigheter över längre tidsperioder bör också undersökas vidare.
Drinking water is an essential part of a sustainable society. In the future, the demand for drinking water will increase and contaminants in the water sources are also predicted to increase. Therefore, it is essential to ensure safe drinking water through functioning drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs). One important contaminant to treat is natural organic matter (NOM), which is harmless in itself but can produce harmful products. One technique to use for treating NOM is carbon filters (CFs). The effect of increased flow rate and increased empty bed contact time (EBCT) on the CF efficiency was investigated at a DWTP. The investigated parameters were particles, ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm, turbidity, conductivity, cultivable microorganisms, fluorescent dissolved organic matter, total organic carbon, chemical oxygen demand, and odour. Three CFs were studied at different flow rates; 190, 220, 250, and 280 L/s for 24 hours each. Additionally, two filters had increased EBCT of 60 and 76 %, while one filter continued with the regular flow rate of 190 L/s for six weeks. Outgoing water from the filters was analysed to see if the change had any effect on the DWTP. This preliminary study did not find any significant effect on the CF treatment caused by increased flow rate or EBCT. This could be an indication that the CFs can handle a future increase in flow rate and thus be an essential part of a future expansion of the DWTP. The indications of CFs being affected by the increase in flow rates for some of the parameters could be explained by fluctuations in incoming water or differences between the separate filters. In the future, a more thorough analysis of both incoming and outgoing water to the CFs should be done, where sampling occurs more frequently to better understand the fluctuations in incoming contaminant concentrations. The measurements should also be repeated to see how the treatment differs from day to day. How the CFs handle increased flow rates over longer time periods should also be investigated further.

The current state of JPEG 2000 Part 1 is an international standard. Although it provides unprecedented features not available in other standards, lots of the technical bottlenecks are still unsolved in its image processing algorithms, especially in the novel embedded block encoding operations. In this thesis, bit-level we propose a new architecture for ECBOT. The architecture can perform parallel processing coding to increase the throughput of context formation. Column skipping can skip columns which have four no-operation bits. In addition, in the memory structure, we separate data and allocate into 9 memories. In the arithmetic encoder, a 4-stage pipeline is used to reduce the clock cycle time. Besides, a data-forward technique is used in 4-stage pipeline architecture to process two identical contexts continuously inputted. The proposed architecture is shown to have high throughput. We have average 22% improvement in throughput by comparing [2]. It needs 0.385 second to encode an image with 2400x1800 image size. This design can support further applications such as Motion-JPEG2000.
