Morton, Heather Lea Woodworth. "Cognitive aspects of sexual functioning : differences between East Asians and Euro-Caucasians". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/43017.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study was to investigate male and female undergraduates’ sexual beliefs, as well as their thoughts and emotions associated with sexual experiences. The study aimed to determine whether there are differences in these variables between East Asians and Euro-Caucasians, as well as the relationship between these variables and acculturation. In addition, the relationship between sexual beliefs, automatic thoughts, and emotions, and specific aspects of sexual functioning were also examined in both men and women. Euro Canadian (153) and East Asian (251) undergraduate students completed a questionnaire package measuring these variables. East Asian men and women had greater endorsement of almost all dysfunctional sexual beliefs assessed in the study. In addition, East Asian and Euro-Caucasian women differed in the frequency in which they experience negative automatic thoughts. East Asian men reported higher levels of fear compared to Euro-Caucasian men during sexual activity. Associations between difficulties in sexual functioning and dysfunctional sexual beliefs in East Asians, and difficulties in sexual functioning and automatic thoughts in both East Asians and Euro- Caucasians were also found. Together these results provide preliminary support for the hypothesis that differences in cognitive aspects of sexuality may underlie the differences in sexual functioning previously observed between these two groups.

Mukadam, N. "The EAST-Dem study : encouraging access for South Asians to timely dementia diagnosis". Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2017. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1560934/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
BACKGROUND: People from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds tend to seek help later in the course of dementia than people from the majority ethnic population. Aim: To develop an intervention to encourage people from South Asian backgrounds to seek help earlier for memory problems and test its acceptability and feasibility. Methods: I systematically reviewed the literature and analysed routinely collected data to find interventions which improved dementia diagnostic rates. I then completed my qualitative study with South Asian community members to inform the development of an intervention to encourage earlier help seeking for memory difficulties by South Asian people. After piloting, I tested the intervention in a pilot cluster randomised controlled trial (RCT) with South Asian patients from participating GP practices. Primary outcomes were: 1. Feasibility - recruitment and retention rates 2. Acceptability - rating on a Likert scale. Results: No trials to increase dementia diagnosis rates have been successful, but rates increased significantly after implementation of the English National Dementia Strategy. South Asian community members said that understanding, through a story, that dementia was a physical illness, would normalise dutiful family members seeking interventions. I developed a bilingual leaflet and trilingual DVD with this content. I recruited and randomised 8 GP practices; 78/102 (76%) patients who allowed me to contact them, consented to the study (37 treatment-as-usual and 41 intervention). 76 (97%) participated in follow-up. 37/41 (90%) who received the intervention found it acceptable. Conclusion: I designed the first culturally-appropriate intervention to encourage help-seeking for dementia in the South Asian population. Participants found it acceptable. It was feasible to recruit and follow-up participants. A full-scale RCT would require a very large number of GP practices to participate so is likely to be expensive. It may be preferable to make this acceptable and simple intervention available and disseminate it.

Nasar, Saima. "Subjects, citizens and refugees : the making and re-making of Britain's East African Asians". Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2016. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/6685/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Considerable historical attention has been paid to the end of Empire in Britain’s East African colonies and the consequences of this for postcolonial states. The forced migration of minority South Asian populations from the new nation-states of East Africa has received considerably less attention. South Asians remain at the margins of African and British national histories, constructed variously as either fringe opponents of anti-colonial nationalist movements or marginalised minorities. Yet re-assessing the history of these ‘refugee’ communities has the potential to enhance scholarly understanding of both colonial and postcolonial power relations and migrant-refugee identity formulation and re-formulation. Moreover, studies of migrant communities in Britain have tended to treat South Asians as a homogenous group, paying relatively little attention to the specific identity trajectories of those who were expelled from the new nation-states of East Africa. In contrast, this research takes as its starting point the transnational experiences of East African Asians as multiple migrants, exploring the reformulation of political and cultural identities during the course of their expulsion, migration and resettlement in and between postcolonial states.

Yamada, Joey. "Examining the Cross-Cultural Differences in Affect Valuation: Whites, East Asians, and Third Culture Kids". Scholarship @ Claremont, 2018. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/1750.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This paper explores the cross-cultural differences in affect valuation, emotion regulation, and the relationship between affect valuation, emotion regulation and subjective well-being across White Americans, Asians, and Third Culture Kids (TCKs). Emotional experiences shape every facet of our lives, yet understanding the extent to which emotional experiences are universal is still poorly understood. This is particularly the case among individuals with diverse cultural experiences. In the current study, we look at TCK individuals, a group composed of White-identifying individuals who spent a significant time of their childhood in East Asian countries. Through a questionnaire that was distributed via email and word of mouth, participants (N = 239) were asked to complete five surveys that included a subjective well-being scale, the affect valuation index, an emotion regulation questionnaire, an interpersonal emotion regulation questionnaire, and a set of scenarios that tested the individual’s tendency to feel a duty to themselves or to others. This study found that the Asian group significantly valued low arousal emotions more so than European Americans or the TCK individuals. TCKs were most likely to feel a strong sense of duty to help others.

Ramasamy, Venktasalu Munikumar. "Understanding home, homeland, and family at the end of life : a qualitative study of older South Asians in East London". Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2011. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/12105/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Background: South Asians constitute the single largest ethnic minority group in the United Kingdom, yet little is known about their perspectives and experiences on end of life and its related care. Aim: To explore and critically examine views and perceptions about end of life issues among older South Asians living in East London. Methodology and methods: After gaining ethical approval, five focus groups and 29 in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with total of 55 older adults (24 men and 31 women) aged between 52 to 78 years. Participants from six South Asian ethnic groups were recruited through 11 local community organisations. Where possible the focus groups and interviews were conducted in the participants' preferred language. Tape recorded multilingual data were translated and transcribed into English. Using a constructive grounded theory approach, data analysis resulted in the development of a theory of “continuity and reconstruction” that captured three categories of ‘home’; ‘family’ and ‘trust’ at end of life. Findings: The theory of “continuity and reconstruction” is explored in three ways. Firstly, the theory is explored through examination of beliefs, attitudes and expectations about the place of ‘home’ and ‘homeland’ in care of the dying. Secondly, the theory is explored as accounts of “family” in terms of how family are bound towards caring for their dying relatives at end of life and the importance of support from social networks in family care giving. Finally, the theory is explored in terms of how participants place “trust” in their family and medical professionals to lead any related discussion and to make decisions related to their death and dying. Conclusion: The theoretical framework of “continuity and reconstruction” explains how older South Asians make efforts to adhere to important social and cultural values relating to death and dying, while rebuilding and adapting those values during the challenges of living in an emigrant society. This study highlights the need for further exploration of family care giving needs among South Asian population and concludes by drawing attention to some practical implications for health professionals who are responsible for initiating end of life discussions and are involved in end of life decisions when caring for people from these ethnic minority groups.

Cheng, Stephen Kin Kwok. "The need for approval: a psychological study of the influence of Confucian values on the social behaviour of East Asians". Thesis, Cheng, Stephen Kin Kwok (1997) The need for approval: a psychological study of the influence of Confucian values on the social behaviour of East Asians. PhD thesis, Murdoch University, 1997. https://researchrepository.murdoch.edu.au/id/eprint/654/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis begins with a critical overview of crosscultural psychology and a re-examination of the concepts of emic and etic. It argues that the time has come for cross-cultural psychology to free itself from the moorings of its Western, universalistic paradigm and take non- Western, indigenous psychology seriously, especially that of East Asia. To address the need for an East Asian psychology, the thesis presents an empirical study on the psychological influence of Confucianism on East Asians. It hypothesises that the Confucian values of filiality, propriety and harmony induce a strong need for approval and a range of approval-seeking behaviours in the individual. In contrast, the Western values of individuation, autonomy and conflict induce a strong need for independence and a range of independence-seeking behaviours. To test this hypothesis, a 26-item, 5-point Likert scale was developed and'administered to 1625 university students across East Asia, which include East Asian samples from China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan, as well as Caucasian samples from Australia, United Kingdom and the United States. The study has confirmed its hypothesis that the Confucian values of filiality, propriety and harmony characterise the approval-driven social behaviours of East Asians and that the values of individuation, autonomy and conflict characterise the independence-driven social behaviours of Westerners. However, it has also found that, contrary to many long-held assumptions, there are significant differences in the way Confucian values have exerted their respective influence on the Chinese, Japanese, Koreans and other East Asians. The findings suggest not only that the culturally induced need for approval can be used as an overarching construct for the psychological study of East Asians from an indigenous perspective, but also that the innovative model used in this study can be applied to the study of other indigenous psychologies as well. More significantly, the study has found that, in contrast to the need for divine approval which has motivated the achievements of European Protestants in the past, the need for human approval is what characterises the achievement motivation and behaviours of Confucian East Asians today.

Abstract (sommario):
Today‟s globalization enables people to move across borders for various reasons. When people move there are consequences they need to face; local customs that need to be taken into consideration. As individuals undergo the process of adapting to a new culture, acculturation occurs. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the degree of acculturation and preference for American food. The study is applied on East Asian students residing in Texas, USA. Length of residence in the U.S. and sex are two demographic factors that are used to measure the influence on the degree of acculturation. The results show that these two factors are not statistically significant to explain the degree of acculturation. However, it was observed that there is a tendency that a longer length of residence indicates a higher degree of acculturation. The results also show that marginalization and integration are the two most frequent degrees of acculturation. Finally, even though there is a slight relationship between the degree of acculturation and preference for American food, it was not statistically significant. This thesis fills the gap of limited research of acculturation among East Asians and contributes to the theoretical explanation of how the degree of acculturation affects food consumption. It also helps businesses and market practitioners to better understand the East Asians as a target group.

Voigt-Graf, Carmen 1970. "The construction of transnational spaces : travelling between India, Fiji and Australia / Carmen Voigt-Graf". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2002. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/27931.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines the comparatively recent concept of transnationalism by undertaking an empirical study in a context that has so far not been systematically studied in this way. The transnationalism concept was pioneered in the early 19905 by scholars in the United States. The argument is that migrants and their kin construct transnational spaces which permeate various spheres of their daily life. Studies that fail to take these transnational spaces into consideration, risk overlooking important aspects of the migrant adaptation process and the lives of migrants and their kin. This study underlines the importance of applying a transnational perspective to migration and migrant adaptation. While being credited with adding valuable new perspectives and insights, transnationalism scholars have overlooked continuities with earlier migration concepts.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the master thesis is to characterize and evaluate the current security system in East Asia, to show the security strategies of the system actors and the existing friction points, and to assess the future development of the security system in place. For this purpose the author first defines the East Asia's security system using the conceptual tools of three international relations theories, namely neo-realism, neo-liberalism, and constructivism. In the following section, the security strategies and security issues are discussed. In the final section, the international relations theories are used again to assess the stability of the current security system and lastly the prospects for a change of the system are evaluated.

Park, Jinsoo. "Sino-Japanese competitive leadership and East Asian regionalism : the Chiang Mai Initiative and East Asian organisations". Thesis, University of Warwick, 2011. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/35534/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
East Asia and East Asian regionalism have gained greater attention. Given this, what makes this region and who determines its shape are very important questions, which are, in turn, highly relevant to questions of regional leadership. This thesis thus aims to examine and explain the nature of Sino-Japanese regional leadership and explore its impacts on the shape of the East Asia region and East Asian regionalism. It does so particularly with reference to the CMI and regional organisation-building from the APT to the EAS. The thesis explores two key themes. First, it seeks to bridge a gap in the study of East Asian regionalism in particular and East Asia in general by focusing on the dynamics of Sino-Japanese leadership competition. There is still a lack of a dedicated study to examine the dynamics of regional leadership in the region and its impact on the East Asia region and East Asian regionalism. It addresses why regional powers assert regional leadership and how their assertions of regional leadership change their interests and behaviours with regard to regional cooperation. By doing so, it can help better comprehend the interests and strategies of China and Japan and their impacts on the shape of East Asian regionalism. Secondly, this thesis aims to fill in a gap in the study of global or regional leadership by developing a constructivist analytical tool to define leadership and examine the dynamics of leadership. It highlights that neither the realist and liberal approaches to international leadership nor the emerging literature on regional powers provides a good analytical tool to conceptualise regional leadership and to examine the dynamics of regional leadership competition. It argues that some insights of constructivism help to better comprehend the dynamics of regional leadership.

Abstract (sommario):
East Asia has been one of the most important regions in the global economic system. In this thesis, the East Asian miracle and the success of China&rsquo
s transition are studied by overviewing the literature. The East Asian economies had experienced sustainable rapid growth from the 1960s to the end of 1990s, until the Asian crisis in 1997. China started her transition from the central planning system at the end of the 1970s. Since the transition began, China has grown at rates even higher than developed countries and she is one of the countries which survived the Asian crisis nearly without damage. Comparing these two experiences in East Asia would give an idea on the features of development in this region. The conclusion is that China shares the features of developmental state which is attributed to the miraculous East Asian economies.

Lefevre, Randy J. "Synoptic forcing of East Asian cold surges". Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/26287.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
A linearized, global spectral model with eight levels was used to determine whether the nonlinear interaction between a planetary-scale wave (wavenumber four) and a rapidly growing synoptic-scale wave (wavenumber seven) could produce a northeasterly wind, characteristic of East Asian cold surges. The amplitude of the synoptic-scale wave, or generic cyclone, was produced by a nonlinear Eady model of the atmosphere that included friction. The resulting nonlinear forcing was applied to either the first law of thermodynamics, the vorticity equation, or both. The thermal forcing did not produce a significant cold surge response. The vorticity forcing produced a respectable cold surge within 48 hours. The results of this study indicate the planetary-synoptic wave interaction is a possible method for initiating East Asian cold surges. Keyword: Theses

Abstract (sommario):
In the age of globalisation dominated by mass communication, the flow of information contributes to a big extent to the worldviews of its "global citizens". From this point of view the mass media can be seen as one of the most salient sources of cross-cultural communication. This study investigates mass communication across cultures, focusing on South East Asia (Malaysia and Singapore), Australia and Germany. The centre of attention is the Western media coverage of South East Asia and vice versa. In this context a content analysis of newspapers of the three regions has been conducted. In addition, working practices and conditions of Western foreign correspondents in South East Asia have been examined. Apart from the investigation of inter-cultural media coverage, another focus of attention will be the examination of two levels of communication: The business level, concentrating on issues like e.g. the Asian business etiquette; and the private level, looking into the transition to a different culture from the perspective of Australian and German expatriates. Apart from investigating mass communication across cultures and to provide a written analysis of the findings, a series of radio documentaries in English and in German has been produced. They cover the following issues: Foreign correspondents in South East Asia, the expatriate-lifestyle of Australians and Germans in South East Asia, business etiquette in Asia, student exchange Germany-Asia, image and prejudices East-West and Tourism.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The large body of observations extant from pre-telescopic East Asia - China, Japan and Korea - provide the opportunity to investigate the behaviour of the Sun and solar system over a much longer period of time than that since telescopic observations began in Europe. Much past work in this field has tended to concentrate on individual records of particularly significant observations. In this study the variations in the frequency of the observation of meteors, comets, eclipses, planetary conjunctions and occupations, sunspots, and aurorae during the pre-telescopic period are examined in contemporary records from these three countries. It is to be expected that data artefacts (frequency variations not of astronomical origin) are present to some degree in early sources. The records are translated and collated where necessary, and by comparing patterns across the three countries and across different types of event several major data artefacts are identified and classified. The problem of such artefacts has not previously been the subject of analysis. The results of this study are therefore of significance in considering the reliability of these sets of data for the examination of long term variations in the solar system.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis borrows Susan Sontag's analysis of "illness as metaphors" and discussed three different disease-related metaphors appeared in China's New Life Movement: disease as a metaphor of invaders; disease as a metaphor of Chinese traditional family; disease as a metaphor of national crisis. By analyzing how these metaphors were used by the state and the Kuomintang government, this thesis studies the increasing intervention of the state’s power in people's everyday life experience, the changing concepts of hygiene, disease, and body, as well as the relationships between the state and the individual in the New Life Movement.
