Abstract (sommario):
The main purpose of the textbook is to acquaint students and engineers with the principles of design and construction of buildings and structures in seismic areas. The tutorial sets out the basic principles of design and construction of frame, large-panel buildings, buildings with load-bearing walls made of small-piece stones and large blocks, buildings made of local materials, frameless buildings made of monolithic reinforced concrete. The design requirements for buildings in earthquake-prone areas are described, and the main requirements for the production of works and implementation of anti-seismic measures during construction are outlined. Architectural, construction, design and technological aspects of construction in seismic areas are revealed. Meets the requirements of Federal state educational standards of higher education of the latest generation. It is intended for students studying in the areas of training 08.03.01 and 08.04.01 "Construction" in the following disciplines: "Design, construction and operation of buildings in seismic areas", "Theory and design of buildings and structures in seismic areas".

Abstract (sommario):
Unconventional development has revolutionized natural gas production, an advance that could play a major role in reducing dangerous greenhouse gas emissions implicated in global climate change. However, the ‘net carbon reduction benefits’ associated with natural gas (ie fuel switching from coal to natural gas for electricity generation) will dissipate if the environmental footprint of unconventional development is not addressed. New and developing technologies can help reduce the environmental footprint. For example, new technologies to identify methane leaks in natural gas systems can ensure that the carbon benefit is secured. And there are other challenges related to reducing the environmental footprint including improved water management and preventing earthquakes linked to unconventional gas development. One US state, Colorado, has proven that workable efforts can successfully be undertaken to require deployment of new technology to reduce methane emissions—the result of a first-in-the US collaboration involving political leaders, industry, environmental groups, and regulators.

Abstract (sommario):
Written in a witty and informal style, this book explains modern plate tectonics in a non-technical manner, showing not only how it accounts for phenomena such as great earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions, but also how it controls conditions at the Earth’s surface, including global geography and climate, making it suitable for life. The book presents the advances that have been made since the establishment of plate tectonics in the 1960s, highlighting, on the fiftieth anniversary of the theory, the contributions of a small number of scientists who have never been widely recognized for their discoveries. Beginning with the publication of a short article in Nature by Vine and Matthews, the book traces the development of plate tectonics through two generations of the theory. First-generation plate tectonics covers the exciting scientific revolution of the 1960s, its heroes, and its villains. The second generation includes the rapid expansions in sonar, satellite, and seismic technologies during the 1980s and 1990s that provided a truly global view of the plates and their motions, and an appreciation of the role of their within the Earth system. Arriving at the cutting edge of the science, the latest results from studies using techniques such as seismic tomography and mineral physics to probe the deep interior are discussed and the prospects for finding plate tectonics on other planets assessed. Ultimately, the book leads to the startling conclusion that, without plate tectonics, the Earth would be as lifeless as Venus.

Abstract (sommario):
Tsunamis, the giant waves that periodically engulf coastal areas and even the shores of lakes and rivers, have had a major impact on the world. Not only have they caused countless deaths but also they have changed nations, societies, and cultures from prehistoric to modern times. This book describes the science of tsunamis and the many ways they can be generated, ranging from earthquakes to volcanic eruptions and explosions, landslides, and others. It also explains how the waves travel across oceans at the speed of a jet airplane and how they focus or disperse their incredible energy. It delves into the clues that ancient tsunamis have left behind to be unraveled by modern science so that we can better understand not only what has happened in the past but also what will happen in the future. The book also explores the human side of tsunami disasters, examining their effect on the residents of impacted communities by recounting the amazing true stories of survival, heroism, and tragic loss. It discusses and provides examples of what works in mitigation, preparedness, warning, response, and recovery from tsunamis; what does not work; and what needs to be done. It contains little-known stories about scientists struggling to better understand these catastrophic waves, while fighting government ignorance and reluctance to take action, as well as amazing chance discoveries and the continued quest to learn more and become better prepared, as every year the odds of yet another catastrophic tsunami increase.
