Abstract (sommario):
Academic work on agents and ontologies is often oblivious to the complexities and realities of enterprise computing. At the same time, the practitioners of enterprise computing, although they are adept at the building of robust, real-life enterprise applications, are unaware of the academic body of work and the opportunities of applying novel approaches of academic origin. Enterprise applications are very complex systems that are designed to support critical business operations. This article outlines the technical and business foundations of enterprise application software and briefly discusses viable opportunities for agents and ontology research.

Abstract (sommario):
www technologies are developing very fast. The new technologies make possible the easier creation of the web applications, which support business activities. Small and medium size enterprises, which serve as the driving force for innovations and thus for economic development, can utilize these technologies for the creation of relatively inexpensive applications, which can be tailor-made for the given enterprise by using the open source software (OSS). This contribution presents several practical examples of how to create – update – the web site of an enterprise and how to supplement it with an e-shop option. Examples from the area of flower selling have been selected.

Abstract (sommario):
This article describes a multi-agent approach that provides solutions to the problems raised during the development of cooperative e-business applications. This approach is organized in the form of cooperative application groups representing the different parts of a company. Agent coordinators orchestrate the cooperative work of these groups. The most requested functionalities inside the company and those offered to the external world can be exported as Web Services. These Web Services are described with DAML-based Web Service ontology (OWL-S) and managed with an intermediate agent called Web Service Finder Agent. The proposed solution provides a new vision of the cooperation context where the companies and their partners share knowledge and offer functionalities as agents and Web Services.

Abstract (sommario):
The blending of Internet technologies and traditional business concerns impacts all industries and is the latest phase in the ongoing evolution of business. In this changing business environment, the most successful companies are those that leverage their investment in Web-based technologies by implementing e-business solutions supported by sound existing infrastructures based on well-functioning Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. Companies must also forge tighter links in the supply chain, from raw materials to customers and have increasingly turned to the Internet and Web-based technologies to do so. This paper presents a framework for understanding e-business opportunities within the context of a traditional enterprise and its infrastructure and examines the evolving relationship between e-business and ERP. These developments are moving businesses toward the concept of e-Supply Chain to achieve true supply chain integration. The issues and challenges faced by organizations in moving to such a complete e-business environment are discussed and suggestions are offered for businesses to navigate this challenging transformation.

Abstract (sommario):
Perceived gain from the use of e-business information and communication technologies (ICT) represents the main driver that motivates companies to implement them. The study focuses on the perception of e-business ICT applications within companies. On the sample of 11,072 companies from 27 EU states, we have determined which of e-business ICT application the companies use and how they perceive the impact of ICT on their revenue growth. An ordinal regression and decision tree analysis have been used to identify a portfolio of e-business ICT applications. We have also proposed three hypotheses to test whether the perceived impact of ICT is influenced by the number of implemented e-business ICT applications, or by the number of procurement-orientated e- business ICT applications, or even by the number of sales-orientated ones. The research not only helps practitioners to recognize which tools are behind the positive perception regarding the impact of ICT on revenue growth, but it tries to answer the question of whether the quantity of implemented applications really improves the acknowledged influence of ICT on revenue growth.

Abstract (sommario):
If e-business contracts are to be widely used, they need to be supported by the IT infrastructure of the organizations concerned. This implies that the interactions between systems in different organizations must be guided by the contract and there must be sufficiently strong checks and balances to ensure that the contract is in fact obeyed. This includes facilities for the unbiased monitoring of correct behaviour and the reporting of exceptions. One of the ways to provide this support is to generate it directly from the agreed contract. This paper considers the steps necessary to provide sufficient automation in the support and checking of e-Business contracts for them to offer efficiency gains and so to become widely used. It focuses on the role of models, taking a model-driven approach to development and discussing both the source and target models and the transformational pathways needed to support the contract-based business processes.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper investigates the relationship between internet security and e-business competence at banking and exchange firms in Jordan. The proposed conceptual model examines the antecedents and consequences of e-business competence and tests its empirical validity. The sample of 152 banking and exchange firms tests the posited structural equation model. The results consistently support the validity of the proposed conceptual model, the results also found that organizations realize the importance of e- business and are willing to proceed further with e-business. Beyond concerns about internet security, their awareness of security hazards and internet performance is minimal. The author concludes that the public awareness of ICT in general is low. In light of the data collected, the author makes recommendations for the interested authorities to improve e-business in Jordan.

Abstract (sommario):
This article shows how the technical hype of 1990s has been transformed into the e-business organizations at the beginning of the 21st century. The authors took an interpretive stance in this study, grounded theory, and investigated the ontology of virtual organization by the metaphorical analysis. The metaphorical analysis adopted in this study provides the analytical power to conceptualize the social structure of virtual organization in the context of structuration theory with the process of grounded theory. As the e-business structuration indicates in this study, virtualization, the metaphor of virtual organization is interpreted as flexible domination, where the rational relationships in power distribution with other e-business characterized temporal (virtual) bond with low switching costs.

Abstract (sommario):
It has proven to be a challenge for health care organizations to achieve the Triple Aim. In the business literature, business model frameworks have been used to understand how organizations are aligned to achieve their goals. We conducted a systematic literature review with an explanatory synthesis approach to understand how business model frameworks have been applied in health care. We found a large increase in applications of business model frameworks during the last decade. E-health was the most common context of application. We identified six applications of business model frameworks: business model description, financial assessment, classification based on pre-defined typologies, business model analysis, development, and evaluation. Our synthesis suggests that the choice of business model framework and constituent elements should be informed by the intent and context of application. We see a need for harmonization in the choice of elements in order to increase generalizability, simplify application, and help organizations realize the Triple Aim.
