Testo completoThe recognition of Christianity as the official religion of the roman empire resulted, at the beginning of the fifth century, in the radical abolition of the pagan cult, as testified in the Sirmondian Constitution 12 of Emperor Honorius, dated 25th December 407.The promulgation of this law triggered violent riots by the pagans of Calama. They rebelled against a decision that denied a multi-secular tradition that brought, until then, peace and prosperity to the Empire. Defending his fellow citizens, Nectarius addressed Augustin so that he intervenes with the imperial authorities in order to obtain a reduction of punishment against the culprits. Nectarius put his action under the Cicero’s authority, justified it fundamentally by his municipal patriotism, and showed at this occasion, the better capacity of paganism to express the link between religion and civil duty. Augustin who willingly joined this debate, also referred to Cicero, to classic authors and to the Bible. This approach allowed him to articulate moral duties of his faith and the roman patriotic ideology, and to highlight the political loyalty of the Christians. This sparring match is unusual as it constitutes an authentic theological-political dialogue made possible thanks to the similar cultural environment where Nectarius and Augustin both belonged

Testo completoThis study is not a precise analysis of the place of Platonism in Origen and Augustine's understanding of the soul but rather aims to verify the traces of the Platonic idea of the soul in Origen's Pèri Archôn and in Augustine's Philosophical Dialogues. The interest of such a method brings to light the hypothesis of the revival of the notion of the soul in both of them as a means of making Augustine and Origen understood by their contemporaries while reinterpreting it in an original way. The theological issues such as the hypostatic union and the divinisation are made explicit through Origen's Homilies and Commentaries on Sacred Scripture insofar as his approach is centered around the question of the anima Christi. For Augustine, the focus is on the place of Christ in the life of the anima, thus introducing the idea of the knowledge of the soul in view of its divinisation with the De Trinitate. The aim of such a study is to redefine the reciprocal contributions of philosophy and theology by deepening the theological questions that are relevant to philosophy

Testo completoSteeped in ancient classical culture and a former professor of rhetoric, Augustine of Hippo (354-430) is considered as a distinguished theologian, philosopher, and pastor, with original andpowerful thoughts. He is not known as a historian, and is not the author of historical works. However, as a bishop and an intellectual authority recognized by his contemporaries, he wasconducted to conduct controversies during which he used a rigorously built historicalargumentation. The way Augustine collects and criticizes his sources, and interprets history, are studied based onCity of God and anti-Donatist writings. These are analyzed taking account to ancient culturalcontext, and using contemporary historiographical approach. Does Augustin reach the historicalwork standard when he addresses the history of Rome and the Church ?The research was conducted in three stages ; first considering Augustine as an historian of Romeand especially of the Roman Republic, then as an historian of the role of pagan and Christianreligion in Rome, and finally as an historian of the Donatist schism in Africa. These steps revealthe progression of Augustine methods, from a work based on secondary sources dealing with anancient period, to a work conducted from documents that he personnally gathers on thecontemporary history of the Church
Guerbet, Marine. "Thomas d'Aquin et le Manichéisme". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université Paris sciences et lettres, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024UPSLP007.
Testo completoThomas Aquinas may have had many reasons to be interested in Manichaeism. The 13th century was the time of the Cathars, considered in a sense as "neo-Manichaeans"; Thomas also sometimes mentions dualist "contemporary heretics" whom he brings closer to and distinguishes from the ancient Manichaeans, and even speaks of a Cathar author. Manichaeism is very important in the patristic tradition, especially Augustinian, taken up by Aquinas. Finally, the issues linked to Manichaeism are among the most important in philosophy: the first principle, evil, freedom, the body and so on. Yet this theme has never been studied for its own sake, even though allusions to Thomas's connection with the Manichaeans and Cathars are regular in the writings of scholars. This thesis studies Manichaeism in the works of Thomas Aquinas through its 250 explicit occurrences and numerous other indirect mentions, comparing it with his predecessors since the dawn of the 13th century. How does Thomas identify and refute the major Manichaean theses? And why is he interested in Manichaeism? Was it a current that was still active and that he directly opposed? Was it a patristic heritage that he used for theological reflection? A conceptual issue used to structure his thought? The study shows that Manichaeism is seen as a coherent whole by St Thomas, but that this coherence needs to be reconstructed on the basis of questions treated separately in his work. The issues are varied, as Manichaeism is above all a "figure of thought", taken from the Church Fathers, which he uses for speculative purposes. Thomas knows the contemporary Cathars well, but doesn't seem to have much interest in them.To counter Manichaeism, Thomas Aquinas generally takes up St. Augustine and the Fathers, but substitutes the philosophy employed by Augustine with one that owes much to Aristotle, notably on the first principle, the nature and cause of evil, the place of the body and passions in man, the analysis of choice, natural inclinations and habitus in relation to the goodness of man and his actions. But above all, the concepts and theses developed in response to Manichaeism are developed first and foremost in response to problems that are different from and of greater interest to Manichaeism: responding to distorted interpretations of Aristotle, countering those who attack the legitimacy of beggars, or simply finding a more balanced response to important philosophical and/or theological problems, concerning the body or human action for example. This study also shows how, on many points, Thomas evolves his thinking thanks to an in-depth reading of Aristotle and Augustine: he integrates new theses and analyses from the latter to transform his own theology. It is undoubtedly in the place he accords to the flesh and the consistency of the natural order that he differs most from Augustine, and that he responds most directly to a theological, spiritual and cultural context that has given rise to a resurgence of Gnostic movements. The challenge is not to flee the world, but to restore it in all its dimensions and return it to itself. Augustine spoke of sin and redemption, two fundamental keys to explaining how evil entered the world and how it leaves it; beings are not evil by their very nature, but insofar as they corrupt themselves. However, it is Aristotle who enables Thomas to give a concrete account of the goodness of nature and its dynamisms, which have not been destroyed by sin, by giving greater honor to what belongs to the body

Testo completoThe concept of crime against humanity cannot be understood as a simple legal notion. The study of this concept passes through five terms : Psychology, Law, History, Politics, Philosophy. Ciceron, saint Augustine, Vitoria, Erasmus, Grotius, built up a millenary doctrine about Humanitas, introducing the future concept of crime against humanity. The absolute vulnerability of human being is expressed in the 14th century by the concept of Summa paupertas. The negation of the very high poverty of Christ, by the pope claming an absolute power upon mankind, is understood by Guillaume d’Ockham (1285-1347) as a crime against humanity of Christ. A second meaning of the concept is given by Maximilien Robespierre in his writings “ Sur les événements du 10 août 1792 ”. Clemency towards royalty means a crime against people humanity. The King Louis XVI is called a “ criminel envers l’humanité ”. The third meaning of the concept becomes a legal incrimination during Nuremberg Trials (1945-1946). The legal and philosophical concept of crime against mankind humanity means at this moment the fall of Nazism. Stalingrad remembrance and Treblinka remembrance are linked in the concept of crime against humanity. Turkish trials (1919) about armenian genocide, Eichmann trial (1961) in Jerusalem about jewish genocide, and french trials (Klaus Barbie, 1987, Paul Touvier, 1994, Maurice Papon, 1998), express connection between the State criminality against civilian population and the crime against humanity. The creation of an International Criminal Tribunal (1993) for ex-Yougoslavia and for Rwanda (1994), and the constitution of a permanent International Criminal Court decided in Rome (1998), mean the worldwide institutionalization of the concept of crime against humanity
