Abstract (sommario):
The concept of network is predominantly used in several applications of computer communication networks. It is also a fact that the dominating set acts as a virtual backbone in a communication network. These networks are vulnerable to breakdown due to various causes, including traffic congestion. In such an environment, it is necessary to regulate the traffic so that these vulnerabilities could be reasonably controlled. Motivated by this, [Formula: see text]-part degree restricted domination is defined as follows. For a positive integer [Formula: see text], a dominating set [Formula: see text] of a graph [Formula: see text] is said to be a [Formula: see text]-part degree restricted dominating set ([Formula: see text]-DRD set) if for all [Formula: see text], there exists a set [Formula: see text] such that [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. The minimum cardinality of a [Formula: see text]-DRD set of a graph [Formula: see text] is called the [Formula: see text]-part degree restricted domination number of [Formula: see text] and is denoted by [Formula: see text]. In this paper, we present a polynomial time reduction that proves the NP -completeness of the [Formula: see text]-part degree restricted domination problem for bipartite graphs, chordal graphs, undirected path graphs, chordal bipartite graphs, circle graphs, planar graphs and split graphs. We propose a polynomial time algorithm to compute a minimum [Formula: see text]-DRD set of a tree and minimal [Formula: see text]-DRD set of a graph.

Abstract (sommario):
Identification and validation of novel drug targets continues to be a major bottleneck in drug development, particularly for polygenic complex diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Here, the authors describe an approach that allows researchers to rapidly identify and validate potential drug targets by combining chemical tools and RNA interference technology. As a proof-of-concept study, the known mechanism Sigma LOPAC library was used to screen for glucose-dependent insulin secretion (GDIS) in INS-1 832/13 cells. In addition to several mechanisms that are known to regulate GDIS (such as cyclic adenosine monophosphate—specific phosphodiesterases, adrenoceptors, and Ca2+ channels), the authors find that several of the dopamine receptor ( DRD) antagonists significantly enhance GDIS, whereas DRD agonists profoundly inhibit GDIS. Subsequent siRNA studies in the same cell line indicate that knockdown of DRD2 enhanced GDIS. Furthermore, selective DRD2 antagonists and agonists also enhance or suppress, respectively, GDIS in isolated rat islets. The data support that the approach described here offers a rapid and effective way for target identification and validation. ( Journal of Biomolecular Screening 2008;128-134)

Abstract (sommario):
Wood is one of the most important construction materials, and its use in building applications has increased in recent decades. In order to enable even more extensive and reliable use of wood, we need to understand the factors affecting wood’s service life. A new concept for characterizing the durability of wood-based materials and for predicting the service life of wood has recently been proposed, based on material-inherent protective properties, moisture performance, and the climate- and design-induced exposure dose of wooden structures. This approach was validated on the decking of a model house in Ljubljana that was constructed in October 2013. The decay and moisture content of decking elements were regularly monitored. In addition, the resistance dose DRd, as the product of the critical dose Dcrit, and two factors taking into account the wetting ability of wood (kwa) and its inherent durability (kinh), were determined in the laboratory. DRd correlated well with the decay rates of the decking of the model house. Furthermore, the positive effect of thermal modification and water-repellent treatments on the outdoor performance of the examined materials was evident, as well as the synergistic effects between moisture performance and inherent durability.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractComparing the propensity for risk in concepts with little commonality, such as different working principles, different number of functions and components, is challenging to achieve in a systematic and traceable manner. This paper builds on the Function Integrity Diagnosis and Documentation method to introduce a Function Integrity indicator as a means to quantitatively compare dissimilar design concepts based on risk assessment. The proposed indicator is intended to support designers converge on a suitable design concept based on considerations of risk to concept functions.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractMaturity levels of components in early phases of product development are often assessed with Technology Readiness Levels. However, developing Multi-Material-Design (MMD) concepts for lightweight design, not only the manufacturability of the individual components is decisive, but also their joinability with each other and their integration into the rest system. This paper presents an approach for the evaluation of maturity levels of MMD concepts on the basis of cardinal coefficients considering a time forecast of the manufacturing and joining technologies required in the concept.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractA design rationale is a representation of the reasoning behind a design concept, explaining why the solution is designed the way it is. This makes design rationale a critical part of concept development. However, there is little exploration on how to build a design rationale. This study sheds light on professional designers’ reasoning in conceptual design, as we examine how design rationales for different concepts are built based on a longitudinal study in the context of two design studios. Particularly the study provides insight into how a design rationale is initiated, matured and finalized.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper examines the hitherto neglected resonance between Danto's and Derrida's concepts of the Artworld and the Frame. In doing so, I challenge prevalent understandings of Danto's theoretical framework, highlighting the necessary instability that he integrates into his definition of the art object. Equally, I emphasise the applicability of Derrida's deconstructive concept to the concrete conditions of contemporary artistic practice.I begin by examining the tensions present in Danto's definitional approach, as it demands a complex vision of Artworld relations. I then consider how the ontologically constitutive character of Danto's Artworld may be re-examined through Derrida's concept of the parergon, as a supplementary techné that is fundamentally unstable and fragmented. Through this comparative reading I show that despite their different approaches, Danto's and Derrida's philosophies of art advance similar ontological conclusions. I thus argue that while their differences should not be minimised, our understanding of Danto's and Derrida's aesthetic concepts is enriched through recognition of their unforeseen correspondences.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper we present a question generation approach suitable for tutorial dialogues. The approach is based on previous psychological theories that hypothesize questions are generated from a knowledge representation modeled as a concept map. Our model automatically extracts concept maps from a textbook and uses them to generate questions. The purpose of the study is to generate and evaluate pedagogically-appropriate questions at varying levels of specificity across one or more sentences. The evaluation metrics include scales from the Question Generation Shared Task and Evaluation Challenge and a new scale specific to the pedagogical nature of questions in tutoring.

Wilson, Mark M. J. "Supply chains behaving badly : a dynamic model of inter-organisational supply chain exchange behaviour under rational, relational and chaotic paradigms". Phd thesis, Lincoln University. Commerce Division, 2006. http://theses.lincoln.ac.nz/public/adt-NZLIU20080229.095848/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Supply chain exchange relationships are complex and sometimes chaotic sociological and organisational phenomena. This complexity is compounded by the boundary spanning necessity of forming supply chain partnerships that are further exacerbated by goal divergence and asymmetric information. One of the main questions for consideration is how these dyadic exchange relationships are maintained and develop over time in response to the various channel behaviours of the actors (the buyer and seller)? In particular, exchange relationships are theorised to be sensitive in some degree to attempts at economic appropriation, and conversely coordinative efforts. Such efforts manifest themselves into the mutually opposing forces broadly labelled as opportunistic and collaborative behavioural paradigms. Drawing from the concepts of Systems and Chaos/Complexity theories, it is theorised that the movement from one form of relational arrangement to another is enacted in a non-linear and dynamic manner with periods of relational equilibrium disrupted by bifurcations resulting in the emergence of new levels of relationship. However, not all exchange relationships are susceptible to constant change, rather, there should be some threshold barrier or relationship inertia that must be overcome before a bifurcation occurs. Yet what is not known is how strong these bonds are to the enactment of opportunistic and collaborative partner behaviours. Hence, 189 manufacturing supply chain relationships were survey-interviewed in order to determine the impact that collaborative and opportunistic behaviours have on supply chain relational movement. The results show that generally exchange relationships do in fact change in response to these enacted behaviours, and that actual levels of supply chain behaviour over a range of 12 variables could be measured. Indeed, the level of opportunistic behaviour experienced by the sample was disturbing. In addition, the level of tolerance (zone of tolerance) for specific behaviours was measured for the first time in the field. Overall, it was found that supply chain exchange relationships do indeed evolve in a non-linear dynamic manner in response to opportunistic and collaborative manoeuvres by the dyadic actors. Finally, these ideas were summarised in the Dynamic Relational Development (DRD) concept that explains how supply chain relationships dynamically change. In addition, the dualistic nature of the collaborative versus opportunistic behaviour choice for exchange actors is tentatively reconciled by the deontological approach of the Supply Chain Citizen theory offered in this research.

This thesis presents a framework for Concept of Operations (ConOps), based on the standards for capturing operations used in the government and industry. An understanding of operations early in system design is critical to the development of effective, successful systems. The current standards for Operational Concepts and the Operational Viewpoint of the Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) outline lengthy descriptions that are cumbersome in the early stages of a system's development. The DoDAF Operational Viewpoint was analyzed in depth to distill the important information relevant to operations. This information was built into the System Architecture framework as a bottom-up approach of coordinating the operations of architecture, operators, and context in order to meet system goals. The resulting ConOps definition and framework was then compared against DoDAF Operational Viewpoint diagram samples in a Search and Rescue system case study, in order to validate the framework. The study found that the framework provides a shorter description with more clarity than the DoDAF diagrams.

Peens, Anquanette. "A comparison of different interventions for children with developmental coordination disorder / Anquanette Peens". Thesis, North-West University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/999.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Research indicates that Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is associated with a poor self-concept and high levels of anxiety (peens et al., 2004; Piek et al., 2000; Skinner & Piek, 2001). Research also substantiates that participation in a well planned motor intervention programme can enhance the self-concept of a child with DCD (Colchico et al., 2005). Literature further indicates that DCD is associated with neuro-motor problems which may vary in severity (Sigmundsson & Hopkins, 2005). It is further indicated that more boys than girls are diagnosed with DCD and also that, in general, boys have a higher self-concept than girls (Maldonado-Duran, 2002; Stein et al., 1998). The aim of this study was firstly, to determine the influence of DCD on the self-concept and anxiety of 7-9 year old children in the Potchefstroom district. Secondly, the study aimed to determine whether gender and the ethnic group of DCD children have an effect on the success of different intervention programmes. A third aim was to determine whether a motor based intervention programme, a self-concept enhancing programme or a combination of the two (psycho-motor intervention programme) would have the best effect on enhancing children's self-concept and motor proficiency. Lastly, the study attempted to determine whether neuro-motor problems could have a negative influence on an intervention programme for DCD children. The Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC), Bruininks-Oseretsky Test for Motor Proficiency (BOTMP-SF), Sensory Input Measurement Instrument (SIM) and Quick Neurological Screening Test II (QNST) were used to determine children's motor proficiency as well as possible neuro-motor problems. The Tennessee Self-Concept Scale (Child Form) (TSCS-CF) and Child Anxiety Scale (CAS) were used to determine the children's self-concept and anxiety respectively. One way variance of analysis, repeated measures analysis, independent t-testing, co-variance of analysis as well as correlational coefficients (r) were conducted, using the Statistica computer package in order to analyze the data according to the above-mentioned aims. A p-value of smaller than or equal to 0.05 was accepted as a significant difference. From the results of the study it seemed that the self-concept and anxiety of randomly selected 7-9 year old children (N=58) diagnosed with DCD are negatively influenced and that girls are more vulnerable to these influences. Repeated measure analyses over a period of one year showed that of the three programmes the motor intervention programme showed the best results at improving the children's motor proficiency while, on the other hand, the psychomotor intervention programme improved their self-concept most. Ethnic group and gender did not have a significant effect on the success of intervention programmes. Lastly, it was found that underlying neuro-motor problems could influence the effect of an intervention programme negatively. It is clear from this study that DCD has a negative effect on children, but that participation in a well planned intervention programme will have positive effects on both their motor proficiency and self-concept.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In 2007, Indermit Gill and Homi Kharas (2007), two World Bank economists, published a report titled An East Asian Renaissance: Ideas for Economic Growth, which suggested that East Asia would soon develop into a middle-income region and proposed the concept of the “middle income trap”. It should be noted that the report did not provide an in-depth interpretation of the concept, nor did it offer a clear income range for the “middle income trap”. In 2011, Homi Kharas and Harinder Kohli (2011) further elaborated on the concept, specifying that when a country escapes the poverty trap in the low-income development stage and enters into the middle-income development phase, the country may face growth stagnation and inability to further move up the ladder into the high-income range.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe paper analyses the claims to Habsburg subjecthood advanced by the prominent Jewish merchant Haim Camondo following an Ottoman imperial order banishing him from Istanbul to Cyprus in 1782. As the Jewish merchant was the holder of Habsburg and British berats, the Camondo affair came to concern the European ambassadors in Istanbul. Eventually, the merchant and his family were able to escape to Habsburg Trieste with their lives and most of their fortune secured. How the European ambassadors, the Ottoman government, and Haim Camondo translated their understandings of legal belonging and identification to each other during the affair, omitting aspects which did not help their respective cases, sheds further light on notions of imperial subjecthood at a crucial period of transition of these concepts in the Ottoman and Habsburg empires. Analysing the web of cultural and political translations in which the Camondo family was caught up also adds to our understanding of trans-imperial families and contributes to the history of (national) identification and subjecthood.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractBenefit points complement the concept of points-based estimation. We showed how to use points estimates for both benefit and cost in various project and portfolio management activities. One can also adapt a range of other models that we did not cover (see e.g. [3, 1, 2]) to points-based estimates. Points-based estimates give rise to project management templates into which you can instantiate various monetary values, for example, various scenarios according to uncertainty assessments.
