Abstract (sommario):

Cet article présente quelques expériences personnelles de terrain en le situant dans un cadre théorique et conceptuel qui questionne les transformations de l’anthropologie. La première partie discute de l’avenir de l’anthropologie et de la pertinence du terrain dans une discipline de plus en plus axée sur les études non-traditionnelles. La deuxième partie présente quelques expériences de terrain en milieu amérindien et métis en mettant l’accent sur les silences de l’ethnographie, sur les ratés de la relation dialogique qui ont transformé mes rôles, mon statut et mon identité. La question de discipline dans ses différentes acceptions : branche de la connaissance, direction morale, règle de conduite et obéissance à l’autorité, discipline de notre culture, de notre éducation, de nos pairs et de nos hôtes, et celle que nous leur imposons parfois malgré nous, est le fil conducteur de cet article qui discute en troisième partie de l’importance du concept d’ontologie dans les rencontres interculturelles.

Abstract (sommario):

En s’intéressant à la réception des spectateurs devant une nouvelle forme de film que l’on nomme docu-fiction, nous pouvons observer l’ambiguïté et surtout l’ambivalence esthétique provoquée par les images. Cette hybridation voire interpénétration entre fiction et documentaire a semble-t-il crée une forme nouvelle de réception et établie une sorte de double pouvoir des images. Cet article se propose de répondre à ces hypothèses grâce à une démarche socio-sémiotique qui pourrait nous éclairer sur l’esthétique de ces images et les conséquences pour son regardeur.

Le stade du double représente un moment organisateur fondamental dans le développement psychique de l'enfant. Il constitue le point de départ des mécanismes de l'attachement et de la vectorisation de la relation du sujet aux objets en même temps qu'il fonde l'édification de l'existence de la conscience de soi. Il participe à la constitution, à travers le déploiement de la relation d'objet primaire, de la matrice de la structure spatiale endopsychique. Le stade du double est composé de trois sous-stades qui s'échelonnent environ sur les deux premières années de la vie : le double unaire, le double narcissique, le double spéculaire. Ce stade évolutif est à l'origine d'une triade psychopathologique que l'on peut retrouver complète, chez certains sujets, composée d'une pathologie psychosomatique (allergie), de troubles des apprentissages (cognition et représentation spatiale) et de la dépersonnalisation-déréalisation. Le stade du double vient inscrire, du point de vue de la métapsychologie, un stade du développement qui, singulièrement, n'est pas un stade traitant du développement libidinal. Cette réflexion soutiendra un développement théorique sur la place centrale de l'objet appelé double originaire ou unaire comme un objet d'attachement caractérisé par un type spécifique de relation d'objet
The stage of double represents a fundamental organizer moment into child's psychical development. It makes up the origin of the attachment mechanisms and organization of the relationship between a subject and his objects, like it founds the existence of self-awareness. It founds too the matrix of the psychical endopsychic spatial structure, through the deployment of primary object relationship. The stage of double is made of three layers which exist along the two firts years of the life : The "unaire" double, the narcissic double, and the specular double. This stage represents the origin of a specific psychopathology : psychosomatic pathology (allergy), learning disorders, and depersonalization-derealization. The stage of double is not a stage describing libidinal development. This fact will be the origin of a theoric development about the central place of the originary object ("unaire" double) like an object of attachment characterized by a specific object relationship

La mise en relation par segalen de deux termes, de deux realites, dans une tension irresolue, a l'interieur de son oeuvre nous a permis de definir un concept, celui de double dont nous pensons qu'il represente un principe organisateur essentiel. Double destructeur pour le sujet et pour le monde, en particulier dans les immemoriaux et dans le fils du ciel puisque ce concept affiche ses limites marquees par l'exces d'alterite ou de similarite qui le fait basculer vers le un totalitaire mais egalement double enrichissant incarne par le modele (individu, oeuvre, systeme de pensee) ou par l'ami dans l'ensemble de l'oeuvre. Double positif enfin sur un plan stylistique et narratif puisqu'il permet au texte de s'ecrire au-dela d'une thematique marquee par la destruction ou la negativite et qu'a partir de 1910-1911, dans la composition de steles notamment, il devient porteur de tous les possibles grace a l'ecart maintenu entre ses deux termes, ce qui permet a segalen de developper une conception moderne du sujet et de mettre en scene de maniere extremement novatrice le caractere indepassable des antinomies qui definissent la condition humaine.

"A la fin du siècle passé, entre 1875 et 1898, une grande migration rurale part de Vénétie, en quittant une misère profonde, à la recherche de l'Eldorado au Brésil. Installés dans le Rio Grande do Sul, les immigrés vénitiens entrent en contact avec la population locale, les gaúchos,et restent immédiatement fascinés. Cette fascination qui a mené les Vénitiens à émuler les gaúchos perdure dans les générations suivantes. L'époque de la dictature de Vargas interdit pendant vingt ans toute manifestation de culture régionale et les descendants de vénitiens abandonnent leur culture d'origine. Pour la célébration du centenaire de l'immigration italienne, en 1975, un groupe de jeunes d'origine vénitienne qui étudient à Porto Alegre quittent la capitale pour retourner dans l'arrière-pays pour se dédier complètement au rachat de leur identité vénitienne. A partir de là un processus d'invention identitaire commence et ces étudiants donneront naissance à des associations qui organiseront les premières fêtes à caractère à caractère identitaire, les premiers groupes de danse et musique folklorique. Les premiers musées de l'immigration italienne et les premiers cours de re-apprentissage du dialecte vénitien. Cependant bien que les liaisons qu'ils ont construites pendant vingt ans avec la Ligue du Nord italienne pour l'affirmation de l'identité vénitienne et tout le travail "d'éducation identitaire" qu'ils ont mené dans le territoire de la Serra dans le Rio Grande do Sul puisse faire croire qu'ils interprètent leur vénitienneté comme quelque chose de conclu, de pur et d'existant depuis toujours en tant que tel, dans la réalité ils n'ont jamais quitté d'être des gaúchos et de continuer à pratiquer cette culture qui avait fasciné leurs ancêtres à la fin du XIXè. Leur être gaúcho reste symboliquement la preuve de l'ascension sociale faite par leurs ancêtres vénitiens au Rio Grande do Sul et est donc strictement lié à leur être vénitien: pour eux, l'un ne va jamais sans l'autre. Cette identité culturelle multiple et situationelle des gaúcho-vénitiens n'est que le reflet de la société polyculturelle brésilienne où ils retrouvent la disponibilité à conjuguer l'un et le multiple, le même et son contraire. "

Identité de Ramuz montrera la plénitude d’une oeuvre dont l’exceptionnelle compacité allie visée esthétique et éthique, et dont la langue originale est un enjeu vital. Ce travail a pour objectif l'etude des processus d'elaboration et d'expression de l'identite de jeunes adultes issus de familles binationales franco-allemandes, c'est a dire dont l'un des parents etait de nationalite allemande (avant mariage), l'autre francais. De caractere empirique, cette etude fait appel a un cadre theorique pluridisciplinaire, integrant des hypotheses et reflexions developpees en science politique sur les identites nationales et europeenne, en sociolinguistique sur le bilinguisme et les relations entre apprentissage des langues et elaboration de l'identite, enfin en psychologie sociale sur la construction des identites sociales en situation de contact de langues et de cultures. Trois questions ont domine l'enquete et le traitement des donnees : 1. Comment se constitue, chez ces jeunes, le rapport aux deux groupes nationaux, francais et allemand, quels processus favorisent l'attachement a l'un plutot qu'a l'autre groupe, voire l'elaboration d'une identite qui puiserait dans les deux groupes nationaux ? 2. Quel role joue la langue et plus precisement l'apprentissage de deux langues, le bilinguisme, dans l'elaboration et l'expression de cette identite ? 3. Cette recherche doctorale cherche à mettre en évidence et à expliquer le rôle du Double et de la Dépersonnalisation dans le processus de la formation de l’identité chez les adolescents normaux et chez les adolescents présentant des problèmes psychopathologiques divers, afin d'étudier les relations entre Double/Dépersonnalisation et Identité au regard de l'influence psychologique parentale. Ayant constaté une grande variabilité des phénomènes de Double et de Dépersonnalisation (tant dans le contexte psychopathologique, que dans le contexte normal), cette étude cherche à repérer les facteurs qui favorisent l'expérience de la Dépersonnalisation épisodique dite non pathologique. Selon une approche psychopathologique, nous avons formulé l'hypothèse que les expériences de Double et de la Dépersonnalisation participent à la formation de l'identité à l'adolescence et varient en fonction des conduites parentales. Notre population de recherche est composée de 158 sujets, (107 témoins et 51 adolescents atteints de divers psychopathologies/troubles des apprentissages). Notre problématique de recherche mettant en jeu plusieurs variables, de nature différente (psychodynamique, développementale et environnementale), nous avons choisi d'utiliser principalement 4 outils méthodologiques compatibles et complémentaires, permettant d'appréhender les phénomènes du Double et de Dépersonnalisation, le processus identitaire et la relation adolescents/parents, sur un plan tant quantitatif que qualitatif. Au vu des résultats obtenus, nous avons pu valider, dans les limites des tests statistiques effectués et de la taille des échantillons étudiés, notre hypothèse de départ, selon laquelle le Double et la Dépersonnalisation influencent le processus de la formation de l'identité
The purpose of this doctoral research is to bring to light and explain the role of the Double and Depersonalisation during the process of Identity formation in well-adjusted adolescents and also in adolescents who display various psychopathological symptoms and learning disabilities, in order to study the relationship between the Double/Depersonalisation and Identity under parents' psychological influence. While ascertaining the differentiation of the experiences/sentiments of the double and depersonalisation (from a psychopathological as well as a physiological aspect) this research aims to report the factors that foster transient depersonalisation. In accordance with a psychopathological approach, we have formulated the hypothesis that experiences of double and depersonalisation contribute to the identity formation and vary in accordance with parental rearing methods. Our research population consisted of 158 adolescents, (107 control subjects and 51 adolescents with different psychopathology and learning disabilities). The aim of our research takes under consideration different variables (psychodynamic, developmental and social). We have chosen to use four complementary and compatible methodological tools, which allow us to perceive the relation double-depersonalisation-parents on a quantitative and qualitative basis. Given the results obtained, we were able to validate, within the limits of the statistical tests carried out and the size of the samples studied; the initial hypothesis of the variability of the experiences/sentiments based on the development of identity

Cette thèse s’inscrit dans le champ des recherches cliniques d’orientation psychanalytique en sciences de l’éducation. Elle est centrée sur la compréhension des processus psychiques de construction identitaire chez les adolescents qui vivent au Liban. L’auteur essaye de montrer que pour ces adolescents, dans le contexte actuel du Liban, la menace externe émanant de l’environnement sociopolitique instable vient redoubler la menace intrapsychique inhérente au processus ordinaire de création adolescente. Ce travail se structure autour de trois parties. La première partie présente le contexte de l’étude et l’évolution du questionnement de recherche. L’auteur fait apparaître l’analyse de ses mouvements contre-transférentiels à l’égard de ses questions de recherche. La deuxième partie de ce travail propose des repères théoriques et méthodologiques en faisant appel essentiellement à des théorisations psychanalytiques et psychosociologiques pour aborder les notions d’identité, d’adolescence, de groupe ainsi que pour évoquer le dispositif d’entretiens cliniques individuels et d’entretiens cliniques en groupe à visée de recherche qu’il a conduits auprès d’adolescents libanais. La troisième partie décrit l’analyse du matériel recueilli. En conclusion, l’auteur essaye de mettre en perspective ses résultats avec des possibles modalités d’accompagnement clinique des professionnels susceptibles de créer des conditions étayantes les plus favorables aux adolescents libanais vis-à-vis des menaces identitaires qui pèsent sur eux
This thesis lies in the field of psychoanalytically oriented clinical research in science of education. It focuses on understanding the psychical process of identity construction among adolescents living in Lebanon. The author tries to show that for these adolescents, in the current context of Lebanon, the external threat, which emanates from the instable socio-political environment, intensifies the intrapsychic threat inherent in the process of creating regular adolescents. This work is structured around three parts. The first part presents the context of the study and the development of research questions. The author shows the analysis of countertransference movement in relation to its research questions. The second part of this work provides theoretical and methodological reference points using essentially psychoanalytic and psychosocial theories to address notions of identity, adolescence, group, and to discuss the device of clinical interviews in groups and individual clinical interviews referred to research that he conducted with Lebanese adolescents. The third section describes the analysis of the collected material. In conclusion, the author tries to put into perspective his results with possible ways of supporting clinical professionals likely to create favourable conditions to support the Lebanese adolescents in relation to identity threats that weigh on them

Cette étude est une réflexion sur la relation triangulaire entre une impasse relationnelle, un deuil non élaboré et la notion psychanalytique du double. L'impasse place le sujet dans une situation de "tout ou rien", dont la signification s’avère être une impossibilité d'accepter la perte, la séparation, et l'altérité. Nous présumons que le deuil non élaboré est la raison pour laquelle quelqu’un s'engage dans l'impasse, tandis que le double joue le rôle de suppléant à ce deuil, jusqu'au moment ou il s'avère illusoire, face à l'impasse. Le double désigne tout ce qui fait référence à une dualité chez l'être humain. Il médiatise les tensions entre les contraires tels que dehors et dedans, extérieur et intérieur, présence et absence. Dans cette optique, il désigne à la fois le clivage et la complétude, et c'est pour cette raison que nous le proposons en tant que solution (vraie ou illusoire) de l'impasse. Nous le montrerons dans cinq œuvres de la littérature hébraïque
The present study is a reflection on the triangular relationship between a relational impasse, unresolved loss and the psychoanalytic notion of the double. The impasse creates an "all or nothing" situation, the significance of which appears to be the inability to accept the loss, separation and otherness. We assume that denied grief is the reason behind an individual entering an impasse, while the double substitutes this loss even to the point where it becomes illusory. The double refers to everything that pertains to duality in human experience. It mediates the tensions between opposites, both without and within, present and absent. In this context, it refers both to the split and the whole and it is for this the reason that we propose it as a solution (real or illusory) to the deadlock. This is demonstrated by way of five Hebrew literary works

Le monde « d’aujourd’hui » et ses transformations sociales ou légales impactent naturellement ce « petit monde dans le grand monde » qu’est celui de la prison. Les avancées significatives des dernières décennies, par exemple en matière de droit de l’homme et du détenu ou de culture du respect, s’imposent, petit à petit, aux règles et aux hommes de la pénitentiaire qui les appliquent. Ce faisant, les écarts qui existent depuis toujours entre buts de système et buts de mission, entre sécurité interne et sécurité externe ou entre impératifs de garde et besoins d’accompagnement à la réinsertion des personnes incarcérées, se creusent. Nous avons pu observer comment les tensions sociétales internationales qui sont à l’ordre du jour des prisons belges perfusent du niveau macro (celui de la super structure) au niveau micro (celui de l’individu au travail). Il en résulte, pour les salariés qui les vivent, un profond bouleversement, tant des gestes professionnels que de leur manière de penser le travail. Entre ce qu’ils appellent le strict et le social, les agents pénitentiaires évoquent de profonds malaises professionnels, mais aussi identitaires. Cette thèse, qui suit deux autres de nos travaux sur le champ pénitentiaire francophone belge en réforme, s’interroge sur les rapports qui existent entre ces tensions identitaires et les engagements en formation d’agents qui sont en fonction dans la partie cellulaire (lieu de vie des détenus et lieu de travail de ces salariés). Case study”, LEROY Joël / Supervision: Professor Étienne BOURGEOIS (PhD)The “current” world and its social or legal changes obviously impact on this “little world within the bigger” which is the penitentiary one.Important breakthroughs in the last decades, e.g. regarding man’s and detainee’s right or respect culture, enforce themselves, step by step, to the rules and workers from the penitentiary world applying them. In this way, discrepancies which have always existed between institution aims and mission aims, between intern safety and extern safety or warding prerogatives and counseling needed to reinsert detainees, widen. We noticed how international society-bound tensions that are currently fiercely debated in Belgian jailhouses pass from the macro level (the one of the super structure) to the micro level (the one of the working individual). To the experiencing workers this lead to a profound change of professional gestures and their mental representation of the work. Considering both what they call the strict (le strict) and the social (le social), penitentiary wardens talk of deep professional bewilderments as well as identity crisis.This thesis, which follows two other works of ours on the reforming Belgian penitentiary world, poses the question of the possible links between those identity tensions and the wardens training commitment who work in the cell part of jailhouses (place where the detainees live and where the wardens work).By this qualitative and monographic study, after having thought about the “whys” of the training commitment of workers subscribing to auto-determined and progressive professional trainings, we intended to better understand whether and how commitment to trainings allows or not those wardens at least temporarily to solve for their own welfare as well as for others their professional and identity dilemma

De este modo, las diferencias que siempre han existido entre los objetivos del sistema y los objetivos de la misión, entre seguridad interna y seguridad externa o entre las necesidades de atención y apoyo en la reinserción de los presos, se profundizan.Hemos podido observar cómo las tensiones sociales internaciones que están al orden del día en las prisiones belgas infiltran desde el nivel macro (la de la superestructura) al nivel micro (el del trabajo individual).En consecuencia, para los trabajadores resulta un cambio profundo, tanto en actos profesionales como su forma de pensar en el trabajo. Abstract The BECM are proposed to classify spatial four-link mechanisms according to groups such as crank-rocker, double-rocker and double-crank (drag link). The BECM can determine the feasible regions and number of the extreme values exactly and solve them simply without complex derivation and calcultion. The paper concerns itself mainly with the RSSR linkage but it can be applied also to other types such as RSSP, RSCP, RSCR etc. The method is very simple and the geometric concept is very clear. Although the graphical methods is mainly introduced in this paper, certainly, it can also be coded in computer to solve out their accurate values.

Abstract (sommario):

Bridge surface roughness encompasses dents, cracks, bulges and other defects due to construction as well as wear and tear in service. It significantly affects the traffic load on bridge, costs extra vehicle fuel consumption and tire wear, and therefore is a major concern of bridge monitoring and maintenance. As it considerably affects the contact force between the vehicle and the bridge, it is also a major obstacle of using vehicle measured data to identify bridge parameters. This paper presents a method to estimate the surface roughness profile of a bridge. With the acceleration data gathered from two different vehicles running on the bridge successively at the same speed, the roughness profile of the bridge can be measured with satisfactory accuracy. The method is verified with finite element simulation.

Aggregate and sectoral effects of public investment crucially depend on the interaction between the output elasticity to public capital and input-output linkages. We identify this dependence through the lens of a New Keynesian production network. This setting doubles the socially optimal amount of public capital relative to the average one-sector economy, leading to a substantial amplification of the public investment multiplier. We also document novel sectoral implications of public investment. Although public investment is concentrated in far fewer sectors than public consumption, its effects are relatively more evenly distributed across industries. We validate this model implication in the data.

Iron oxide (α-Fe₂O₃, hematite) colloids were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and investigated as catalysts for the photodegradation of an organic dye under broad-spectrum illumination. To enhance photocatalytic performance, Fe₂O₃ was combined with other transition-metal oxide (TMO) colloids (e.g., CuO and ZnO), which are sensitive to different regions of the solar spectrum (far visible and ultraviolet, respectively), using a ternary blending approach for compositional mixtures. For a variety of ZnO/Fe₂O₃/CuO mole ratios, the pseudo-first-order rate constant for methyl orange degradation was at least double the sum of the individual Fe₂O₃ and CuO rate constants, indicating there is an underlying synergy governing the photocatalysis reaction with these combinations of TMOs. A full compositional study was carried out to map the interactions between the three TMOs. Additional experiments probed the identity and role of reactive oxygen species and elucidated the mechanism by which CuO enhanced Fe₂O₃ photodegradation while ZnO did not. The increased photocatalytic performance of Fe2O3 in the presence of CuO was associated with hydroxyl radical ROS, consistent with heterogeneous photo-Fenton mechanisms, which are not accessible by ZnO. These results imply that low-cost photocatalytic materials can be engineered for high performance under solar illumination by selective pairing of TMOs with compatible ROS.

Nearly 499,000 motor vehicle crashes involving trucks were reported across the United States in 2018, out of which 22% resulted in fatalities and injuries. Given the growing economy and demand for trucking in the future, it is crucial to identify the risk factors to understand where, when, and why the likelihood of getting involved in a severe or moderate injury crash with a truck is higher. This research, therefore, focuses on capturing and exploring risk factors associated with surrounding land use and demographic characteristics in addition to crash, driver, and on-network characteristics by modeling injury severity of crashes involving trucks. Crash data for Mecklenburg County in North Carolina from 2013 to 2017 was used to develop partial proportionality odds model and identify risk factors influencing injury severity of crashes involving trucks. The findings from this research indicate that dark lighting condition, inclement weather condition, the presence of double yellow or no-passing zone, road sections with speed limit >40 mph and curves, and driver fatigue, impairment, and inattention have a significant influence on injury severity of crashes involving trucks. These outcomes indicate the need for effective geometric design and improved visibility to reduce the injury severity of crashes involving trucks. The likelihood of getting involved in a crash with a truck is also high in areas with high employment, government, light commercial, and light industrial land uses. The findings can be used to proactively plan and prioritize the allocation of resources to improve safety of transportation system users in these areas.

Abstract (sommario):

The main objective of the proposed research was to study IQD1's mechanism of action and elucidate its role in plant protection. Preliminary experiments suggest that IQD1 binds CaM in a Ca²⁺-dependent manner and functions in general defense responses. We propose to identify proteins and genes that interact with IQD1, which may provide some clues to its mechanism of action. We also plan to dissect IQD1's integration in defense pathways and to study and modulate its binding affinity to CaM in order to enhance crop resistance. Our specific objectives were: (1) Analysis of IQD1's CaM-binding properties; (2) Identification of IQD1 targets;(3) Dissection of IQD1 integration into defense signaling pathways. Analysis of IQD1's CaM-binding properties defined four potential classes of sequences that should affect CaM binding: one is predicted to raise the affinity for Ca²⁺-dependent interaction but have no effect on Ca²⁺-independent binding; a second is predicted to act like the first mutation but eliminate Ca²⁺-independent binding; a third has no predicted effect on Ca²⁺-dependent binding but eliminates Ca²⁺-independent binding; and the fourth is predicted to eliminate or greatly reduce both Ca²⁺-dependent and Ca²⁺-independent binding. Following yeast two hybrid analysis we found that IQD1 interact with AtSR1 (Arabidopsis thalianaSIGNALRESPONSIVE1), a calcium/calmodulin-binding transcription factor, which has been shown to play an important role in biotic and abiotic stresses. We tested IQD1 interaction with both N-terminal or C-terminal half of SR1. These studies have uncovered that only the N-terminal half of the SR1 interacts with the IQD1. Since IQD1 has an important role in herbivory, its interaction with SR1 suggests that it might also be involved in plant responses to insect herbivory. Since AtSR1, like IQD1, is a calmodulin-binding protein and the mutant showed increased sensitivity to a herbivore, we analyzed WT, Atsr1 and the complemented line for the levels of GS to determine if the increased susceptibility of Atsr1 plants to T. ni feeding is associated with altered GS content. In general, Atsr1 showed a significant reduction in both aliphatic and aromatic GS levels as compared to WT. In order to study IQD1's molecular basis integration into hormone-signaling pathways we tested the epistatic relationships between IQD1 and hormone-signaling mutants. For that purpose we construct double mutants between IQD1ᴼXᴾ and mutants defective in plant-hormone signaling and GS accumulation. Epitasis with SA mutant NahG and npr1-1 and JA mutant jar1-1 suggested IQD1 function is dependent on both JA and SA as indicated by B. cinerea infection assays. We also verified the glucosinolate content in the crosses siblings and found that aliphatic GSL content is reduced in the double transgenic plants NahG:IQD1ᴼXᴾ as compare to parental lines while the aliphatic GSL content in the npr1-1:IQD1ᴼXᴾ and jar1-1: IQD1ᴼXᴾ double mutants was intimidated to the parental lines. This suggests that GSL content dependency on SA is downstream to IQD1. As a whole, this project should contribute to the development of new defense strategies that will improve crop protection and reduce yield losses and the amount of pesticides required; these will genuinely benefit farmers, consumers and the environment.

Cellulosic-coated electrodes (primarily AWS EXX10-type) are traditionally used for stovepipe welding of pipelines because they are well suited for deposition of one-sided welds and are capable of high deposition rates when welding downhill. Despite advances in mechanized welding technology and the development of low-hydrogen consumables suitable for pipeline girth welding, manual welding, using cellulosic-coated electrodes is still widely utilized for pipeline construction throughout the world. Several incidents involving significant hydrogen-assisted cracking in the weld metal of pipeline girth welds made using cellulosic-coated electrodes have been reported recently. Two of these cases required removal of many welds at an expense of over $4 million dollars, in spite of established procedures having been used. The objectives of this project were to identify the primary mechanisms contributing to transverse cracking of field welds and to provide recommendations regarding safe preheat/interpass temperatures that should be utilized when welding heavy-wall pipe and fittings using cellulosic-coated electrodes. Two cases of severe weld metal hydrogen-assisted cracking were investigated. In each case, the composition of the weld metal was substantially richer that would typically be expected for E8010-G electrodes. Subsequent investigation into factors influencing the composition of weld metal from cellulosic-coated electrodes revealed that arc length has a pronounced effect on carbon, manganese, and silicon recovery. The increase in composition observed with variation in arc length could not explain the extremely rich compositions observed in the cracked girth welds, however. Subsequent investigation demonstrated that it was possible to effectively double the manganese concentration and triple the silicon concentration when using cellulosic coated electrodes that have low coating moisture content.

Workplace inclusion is a core component of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Hong Kong. Workplace inclusion points to the need for employers to recognize diversity among employees, to acknowledge their contributions to the work environment and to raise professional standards for the work force. Diversity within a workplace indicates inclusion of persons with different backgrounds as in racial, ethnic, sex, health status, sexual orientation and gender identity. Women are already less represented at senior levels across various business sectors in Hong Kong. Lesbians and bisexual women face a double glass ceiling in the workplace as a result of both their gender and sexual orientation. Funded by Lingnan University’s Innovation and Impact Fund, and in partnership with Interbank Forum and Lesbians in Finance, Prof. Denise Tse-Shang Tang conducted an online survey and two focus groups targeting lesbians and bisexual women working in Hong Kong’s financial and banking industry. The aim of the study is to examine the specific challenges and barriers faced by lesbians and bisexual women in Hong Kong’s financial services industry. We found that only 37% of survey respondents were out at work, with 23% partially out to close colleagues. In other words, there are still key concerns with being out at work. On the issue of a glass ceiling for LGBT+ corporate employees, 18% of the survey respondents agreed and 47% somewhat agreed that such a ceiling exists. When asked whether it is harder for lesbians and bisexual women to come out in the workplace than it is for gay men, 32% agreed and 46% somewhat agreed. 27% agreed and 39% somewhat agreed with the statement that it is difficult for lesbians and bisexual women to climb up the corporate ladder. Other findings pointed to the low visibility of lesbians and bisexual women in corporate settings, lack of mentorship, increased levels of stress and anxiety, and the fear of being judged as both a woman and a lesbian. Masculine-presenting employees face significantly more scrutiny than cisgender female employees. Therefore, even though discussion on diversity and inclusion has been on the agenda for better corporate work environment in Hong Kong, there still remain gaps in raising awareness of lesbian and bisexual women’s issues.

Background. Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are increasingly common and have important implications for maternal health, healthcare utilization, and health disparities. There is limited evidence to support best management of postpartum individuals with HDP, including home blood pressure (BP) monitoring (HBPM) and choice of antihypertensive agents. For patients experiencing preeclampsia with severe features, there is robust evidence supporting delivery of the infant and treatment with magnesium sulfate (MgSO4). However, MgSO4 may cause unpleasant side effects and, less commonly, toxicity. Patients receiving MgSO4 require additional monitoring (e.g., urinary catheterization) and often have activity restrictions, which impact their postpartum experience. Evidence regarding the optimal (lowest effective) dose and (shortest effective) duration of MgSO4 treatment is needed. Methods. We searched Medline®, Cochrane, Embase®, CINAHL®, and ClinicalTrials.gov from inception to December 1, 2022. After double screening, we extracted study data and risk of bias assessments into the Systematic Review Data Repository Plus (SRDR+; https://srdrplus.ahrq.gov). We evaluated the strength of evidence (SoE) using standard methods. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (registration number CRD42022313075). Results. We found 13 eligible studies (3 randomized controlled trials [RCTs], 2 nonrandomized comparative studies [NRCSs], 8 single-arm studies) evaluating postpartum HBPM, 17 RCTs evaluating pharmacological treatment of postpartum HDP, and 43 studies (41 RCTs and 2 NRCSs) that compared alternative MgSO4 regimens. HBPM programs probably increase submission of any BP measurements during recommended time intervals (moderate SoE) and may increase the number of BP measurements obtained overall (low SoE). Studies have not found that HBPM affects the rate of BP treatment initiation (low SoE), but HBPM may reduce unplanned hypertension-related hospital admissions (low SoE). Most patients were satisfied with management related to HBPM (low SoE), and HBPM probably compensates for racial disparities in office-based follow-up (moderate SoE). In patients with preeclampsia or gestational hypertension (HTN), oral furosemide may shorten the duration of postpartum hypertension (low SoE). There was insufficient evidence regarding the comparative benefits and harms of other antihypertensive medications. Compared with 24-hour treatments, shorter duration MgSO4 regimens shorten the urinary catheterization time (high SoE), time to ambulation (high SoE), and time to breastfeeding (moderate SoE); and may shorten time from delivery to contact with the infant and decrease toxicity as manifested by lost deep tendon reflexes (both low SoE). Loading dose only regimens increase the risk of a recurrent seizure in patients with eclampsia (moderate SoE). Lower dose MgSO4 regimens, compared to standard dose regimens, reduce early signs of magnesium toxicity (high SoE), may approximately double the risk of recurrent seizure in patients with eclampsia (low SoE), but may not affect 5-minute Apgar scores in infants of patients with preeclampsia with severe features (low SoE). There is insufficient evidence regarding potential harms of concomitant use of nifedipine or other antihypertensive medications. Conclusion. HBPM probably improves ascertainment of BP, allowing early recognition of hypertension in postpartum patients, and probably compensates for racial disparities in office based follow-up. The evidence suggests furosemide may shorten the duration of postpartum HTN. However, further evidence is needed regarding the comparative benefits and harms of the antihypertensive medications used to treat postpartum HTN. Large pragmatic trials, augmented by analysis of real-world data, are needed to evaluate the effect of postpartum HBPM on clinical event outcomes (not only process outcomes) and on the comparative effectiveness of alternative antihypertensive treatments. Given that lower dose MgSO4 regimens reduce Mg toxicity, and shorter regimens decrease urinary catheterization time, time to ambulation, time to breastfeeding, and time from delivery to contact with the infant, evidence is needed to identify MgSO4 regimens with the lowest effective dose and shortest effective duration that minimize side effects and toxicity but still prevent seizures among patients with preeclampsia with severe features.

Choice and consumption of food is affected by a range of factors and dietary choices can change over time at both an individual and population level. One behaviour to have changed over the last few years is the purchasing of plant-based foods. UK sales of meat-free and plant-based dairy products have roughly doubled between 2016 and 2020 and in 2020 were worth close to £600m each (Glotz, 2021; Wunsch, 2021). Food Standards Agency (FSA) data from 2022 found that 32% of respondents reported eating meat alternatives in the past, although the majority (66%) are not eating them frequently (Armstrong et al, 2022). Reflecting this, the consumption of red meat and pre-cooked meat has gradually fallen (Fuller et al., 2019). In 2021, 41% of respondents in an FSA survey said that they would like to eat less meat (Heard and Bogdan, 2021) In the context of increased sales of plant-based foods, the study aimed to identify the impact of an annual plant-based meal campaign- ‘Plant-Forward’- conducted in cafeterias serviced by a large UK catering company. The campaign sought to influence consumer food choices by: 1) increasing the availability of plant-based meals to customers in a workplace cafeteria and 2) making plant-based meals more salient and attractive to consumers by using promotional materials. This included claims regarding health and sustainability of plant-based foods in general and newly-launched plant-based meals. The study also aimed to determine the duration and speed of the deterioration of any significant treatment effect identified. To our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate such campaigns which look at immediate as well as long-term effects in a cafeteria setting.

Tax registration drives have become an increasingly popular intervention to expand the coverage of tax nets across sub-Saharan Africa. However, doubts have recently been casted on their impact, as there is increasing evidence that they do not lead to a substantial increase in revenue, and might skew the tax registry so that towards vulnerable groups are overrepresented. There is little explanation available for these outcomes, as the literature focuses on the outcomes of these exercises – rather than on their processes and premises. We seek to fill this gap through an evaluation of a tax registration exercise of small- and medium-sized enterprises in Freetown, Sierra Leone, implemented by the National Revenue Authority. We argue that the conflicting objectives between national and international stakeholders, as well as between street- and higher-level officials, combined with a technocratic view of the exercise that underestimated its political nature, led to its likely unsatisfactory outcome in revenue terms. However, we also identify non-revenue outcomes that may still be seen as positive from the perspective of policymakers, such as familiarising many businesses with a revenue authority that they previously had very little engagement with. While this outcome of registration exercises is frequently overlooked by similar evaluations, it is one that local officials recognise as important in ‘building future taxpayers’.
