Abstract (sommario):
We examined the influence of age in beach chair position shoulder surgery and postoperative quality of recovery by conducting a single-site, observational, cohort study comparing younger aged (18–40 years) versus older aged (at least 60 years) patients admitted for elective shoulder surgery in the beach chair position. Endpoints were dichotomous return of function to each patient’s individual preoperative baseline as assessed using the postoperative quality of recovery scale; measuring cognition, nociception, physiological, emotional, functional activities and overall perspective. We recruited 112 (41 younger and 71 older aged) patients. There was no statistical difference in cognitive recovery at day three postoperatively (primary outcome): 26/32 younger patients (81%) versus 43/60 (72%) older patients, P=0.45. Rates of recovery were age-dependent on domain and time frame (secondary outcomes), with older patients recovering faster in the nociceptive domain ( P=0.02), slower in the emotional domain ( P=0.02) and not different in the physiological, functional activities and overall perspective domains (all P >0.35). In conclusion, we did not show any statistically significant difference in cognitive outcomes between younger and older patients using our perioperative anaesthesia and analgesia management protocol. Irrespective of age, 70% of patients recovered by three months in all domains.

Abstract (sommario):
This study covers the geomorphological and sedimentological characterization of the coastal area of Vridi-Port-Bouët to revise the knowledge acquired with a view to a better understanding of morphological responses in a global context of climate change in a highly dynamic coastal zone. To this extent, three bimonthly topographic surveys of 7 cross-shore beach profiles were carried out using a construction level. Sediments were collected from 4 profiles at different levels of the foreshore (high, mid, and low foreshore) in order to determine granulometry and morphoscopy of sand grains along this stretch of coastline. The speed of the drift current and the volume of sediment transported were determined using the formula of Kaczmarek et al. (2005). Generally speaking, all the profiles produced show that some areas are eroding when others are more or less stable. Profiles C1, C2, and C7 show an unstable coastline, with significant erosion of the foreshore. The beach area on profile C6 is relatively stable. The sands are very coarse to coarse in size and moderately to well-graded. Skewness indicates particle size symmetry for samples taken at sites 1 and 3. On site 2, there is a symmetry towards fine elements. Samples from site 4 show asymmetry towards coarse elements. Quartz grains move from being sub-angular and unworn to rounded and blunt as they move from the Vridi canal to the Port-Bouët lighthouse. This suggests that grain size decreases in the direction of longshore drift. The current velocity induced is estimated at 0.65 m/s. This results in lateral sediment transport of 0.02305 m3/s.

Abstract (sommario):
The depletion of fossil fuels, associated pollution, and resulting health hazards are of concern worldwide. Woody biomass constitutes an alternative source of cleaner and renewable energy. The efficient use of woody biomass depends on xylan depolymerisation as the endo-β-1,4-xylopyranosyl homopolymer is the main component of hemicellulose, the second most abundant component of wood. Xylan depolymerisation is achieved by hemicellulolytic xylanases of glycoside hydrolase (GH) families 5, 8, 10, 11, 30 and 43 of the CAZY database. We analysed a multidomain xylanase (Xyl) from the hindgut metagenome of the snouted harvester termite Trinervitermes trinervoides that releases xylobiose and xylotriose from beech and birch xylan and wheat arabinoxylan. The four domains of Xyl include an N-terminal GH11 xylanase domain, two family 36-like carbohydrate-binding domains CBM36-1 and 2, and a C-terminal CE4 esterase domain. Previous analyses indicated that CBM36-1 deletion slightly increased GH11 catalysis at low pH whereas removal of both CBMs decreased xylanase activity at 60°C from 90 to 56%. Possible cooperativity between the domains suggested by these observations was explored. A crystal structure of the two-domain construct, GH11-CBM36-1, confirmed the structure of the GH11 domain whereas the CBM36-1 domain lacked electron density, possibly indicating a random orientation of the CBM36-1 domain around the GH11 domain. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) experiments similarly did not indicate specific interactions between the individual domains of Xyl supporting a “beads-on-a-string” model for Xyl domains.

Abstract (sommario):
In real-time domains such as video games, a planning algo- rithm has a strictly bounded time before it must return the next action for the agent to execute. We introduce a realistic video game benchmark domain that is useful for evaluating real-time heuristic search algorithms. Unlike previous bench- marks such as grid pathfinding and the sliding tile puzzle, this new domain includes dynamics and induces a directed graph. Using both the previous and new domains, we investigate sev- eral enhancements to a leading real-time search algorithm, LSS-LRTA*. We show experimentally that 1) it is not dif- ficult to outperform A* when optimizing goal achievement time, 2) it is better to plan after each action than to commit to multiple actions or to use a dynamically sized lookahead, 3) A*-based lookahead can cause undesirable actions to be selected, and 4) on-line de-biasing of the heuristic can lead to improved performance. We hope that this new domain and results will stimulate further research on applying real-time search to dynamic real-time domains.

Abstract (sommario):
Smart seaside cities can fully exploit the capabilities brought by Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence to improve the efficiency of city services in traditional smart city applications: smart home, smart healthcare, smart transportation, smart surveillance, smart environment, cyber security, etc. However, smart coastal cities are characterized by their specific application domain, namely, beach monitoring. Beach attendance prediction is a beach monitoring application of particular importance for coastal managers to successfully plan beach services in terms of security, rescue, health and environmental assistance. In this paper, an experimental study that uses IoT data and deep learning to predict the number of beach visitors at Castelldefels beach (Barcelona, Spain) was developed. Images of Castelldefels beach were captured by a video monitoring system. An image recognition software was used to estimate beach attendance. A deep learning algorithm (deep neural network) to predict beach attendance was developed. The experimental results prove the feasibility of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) for beach attendance prediction. For each beach, a classification of occupancy was estimated, depending on the number of beach visitors. The proposed model outperforms other machine learning models (decision tree, k-nearest neighbors, and random forest) and can successfully classify seven beach occupancy levels with the Mean Absolute Error (MAE), accuracy, precision, recall and F1-score of 0.03, 92.7%, 92.9%, 92.7%, and 92.7%, respectively.

Abstract (sommario):
As technology continues to shrink and more heterogeneous blocks are combined into single System on a chip (SOCs), the design of high-performance integrated circuits is getting more and more difficult. In the course of silicon validation, which includes testing (Wafer Testing, Automatic Test Equipment), digital validation (Functional Data route, FSM), analogue bench validation (Electrical, Interoperability), and system validation, a number of challenges that arise from the complicated design are uncovered. The process, methods, and constraints of each domain are unique. Electrical problems that have already passed through earlier stages of design are the primary focus of analogue validation. The analogue signal or mix signal nature of IPs makes it impossible for digital validation or any of the other post-silicon domains to discover electrical flaws on its own. As a result, studies focusing on analogue bench validation have grown in prominence. Recent developments in analogue bench validation, focusing on high-speed serial interface in particular, are highlighted in the proposed study. In addition, this article summarises recent technological developments that provide avenues for further study regarding analogue bench validation.

Abstract (sommario):
Recessive NBEAL2 mutations have been reported in patients with Gray Platelet Syndrome (GPS). This syndrome is characterized by a macro-thrombocytopenia, with platelets lacking alpha-granules, leading to bleeding disorders, often associated with splenomegaly. Thus, NBEAL2 plays a crucial role in the trafficking of alpha-granules in platelets. Moreover, our lab has also described NBEAL2 deficiencies in patients presenting clinical features of the autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome, suggesting a role of NBEAL2 in immune homeostasis and tolerance. A broader international cohort of GPS patients has been described, revealing immune system abnormalities (autoimmune diseases, autoantibodies, lymphopenia). If the role of NBEAL2 in the traffic of granules is often investigated, the exact mechanism leading to the development of autoimmune manifestations in GPS patients remains unknown. NBEAL2 belongs to a protein family involved in vesicular trafficking, all of which possess a conserved BEACH domain. Within this BEACH-domain containing proteins family, one of the closest members to NBEAL2 is LRBA. LRBA is involved in the recycling of CTLA-4, an inhibitory immune checkpoint. CTLA-4 plays a crucial role in the regulation of immune responses and tolerance. Recessive mutations of LRBA lead to similar clinical features as partial CTLA-4 deficiency: autoimmunity, lymphocytic infiltrations, and progressive B lymphopenia. Physiologically, LRBA prevents the lysosomal degradation of CTLA-4 and allows its recycling to the membrane. By analogy with LRBA, we investigated the importance of NBEAL2 in immune checkpoints intracellular trafficking and we brought new insights on its role in lymphocytes. Thus, NBEAL2 is a scaffold protein, binding LRBA, and involved in CTLA-4 trafficking as well as in vesicular trafficking in general. This work brings new knowledge to the regulation of CTLA-4 in activated T lymphocytes, a list of new partners for NBEAL2 protein and a new model of vesicular trafficking in which NBEAL2 is involved. Finally, a better understanding of the mechanisms leading to autoimmunity in patients with gray platelets syndrome could lead to better diagnosis and treatment management

Abstract (sommario):
[Truncated abstract] With rapidly increasing population densities along coastlines and rising global sea levels, coastal protection has become a major concern for coastal communities. Predicting sediment transport in nearshore regions, however, is one of the most challenging tasks faced by coastal researchers in designing coastal structures or beach nourishment schemes. Although nearshore sediment transport mainly occurs in the longshore direction, cross-shore sediment transport is crucial in determining the shoreline evolution and beach morphology . . . This study investigated the factors influencing sediment re-suspension and cross-shore suspended sediment flux in the frequency domain through a series of field measurements conducted at several different locations and a numerical model. Only oscillatory flow components were examined and the mean flow components were not considered. Although many different factors such as cross-shore location with respect to breaker line, significant wave height to water depth ratio (Hs/h), normalised horizontal velocity skewness (/‹u²›³/²), median grain size (d50), breaker type, and wave groupiness appeared to influence the magnitude of cross-shore suspended sediment flux, bed ripples was identified as the major contributing factor in changing the direction of suspended sediment flux due to incident swell waves. Moreover, the direction changed significantly with ripple type. High frequency measurements, obtained to examine the influence of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) on higher sediment suspension events observed under wave groups indicated that higher TKE was generated at the seabed by approaching wave groups, which in turn resulted in higher suspension events.°1

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The work presented in this Thesis is part of the CRONE (robust control with fractional integration order) multivariable methodology development. It deals with the simplification of the robust multivariable control system implementation with application to the control of high dynamic engine test-benches, including those developed by the D2T company. The first chapter introduces different kind of test-benches and gives a general idea about how those systems work while explaining their problems. While the first part of chapter II presents a simple method for test-benches modeling which then allows their simulation, the second part is dedicated to their frequency-domain system identification. The defined identification procedure is applied to a test-bench equipped with a Diesel engine. The third chapter presents the CRONE multivariable methodology and different developments to simplify its use. Reflecting these developments, the developed CRONE multivariable toolbox is used to design a control system for a test-bench consists of two asynchronous motors. The fourth chapter is dedicated to validate the presented work by applying these developments to a high dynamic test-bench with a spark ignition engine. This chapter presents the various software tools developed to simplify the implementation to D2T products of the CRONE full MIMO methodology

Abstract (sommario):
Leakage of stored bulk phase CO₂ is one risk for sequestration in deep saline aquifers. As the less dense CO₂ migrates upward within a storage formation or in layers above the formation, the security of its storage depends upon the trapping mechanisms that counteract the migration. The trapping mechanism motivating this research is local capillary trapping (LCT), which occurs during buoyancy-driven migration of bulk phase CO₂ within a saline aquifer with spatially heterogeneous petrophysical properties. When a CO₂ plume rising by buoyancy encounters a region where capillary entry pressure is locally larger than average, CO₂ accumulates beneath the region. One benefit of LCT, applied specifically to CO₂ sequestration and storage, is that saturation of stored CO₂ phase is larger than the saturation for other permanent trapping mechanisms. Another potential benefit is security: CO₂ that occupies local capillary traps remains there, even if the overlying formation that provides primary containment were to be compromised and allow leakage. Most work on LCT has involved numerical simulation (Saadatpoor 2010, Ganesh 2012); the research work presented here is a step toward understanding local capillary trapping at the bench scale. An apparatus and set of fluids are described which allow examining the extent of local capillary trapping, i.e. buoyant nonwetting phase immobilization beneath small-scale capillary barriers, which can be expected in typical heterogeneous storage formation. The bench scale environment analogous to CO₂ and brine in a saline aquifer is created in a quasi-two dimensional experimental apparatus with dimension of 63 cm by 63 cm by 5 cm, which allows for observation of plume migration with physically representative properties but at experimentally convenient ambient conditions. A surrogate fluid pair is developed to mimic the density, viscosity and interfacial tension relationship found at pressure and temperature typical of storage aquifers. Porous media heterogeneity, pressure boundary conditions, migration modes of uprising nonwetting phase, and presence of fracture/breach in the capillary barrier are studied in series of experiments for their influences on LCT. A variety of heterogeneous porous media made of a range of sizes of loosely packed silica beads are used to validate and test the persistence of local capillary trapping mechanism. By adjusting the boundary conditions (fluid levels in reservoirs attached to top and to bottom ports of the apparatus), the capillary pressure gradient across the domain was manipulated. Experiments were conducted with and without the presence of fracture/potential leakage pathway in the capillary seal. The trapped buoyant phase remained secure beneath the local capillary barriers, as long as the effective capillary pressure exerted by the trapped phase (proportional to column height of the phase) is smaller than the capillary entry pressure of the barrier. The local capillary trapping mechanism remained persistent even under forced imbibition, in which a significantly higher hydraulic potential gradient, and therefore a larger gradient in capillary pressure, was applied to the system. The column height of buoyant fluid that remained beneath the local capillary barrier was smaller by a factor corresponding to the increase in capillary pressure gradient. Mimicking a breach of the caprock by opening valves at the top of the apparatus allowed buoyant mobile phase held beneath the valves to escape, but buoyant phase held in local traps at saturations above residual, and therefore potentially mobile, was undisturbed. This work provides systematic validation of a novel concept, namely the long-term security of CO₂ that fills local (small-scale) capillary traps in heterogeneous storage formations. Results from this work reveal the first ever unequivocal experimental evidence on persistence of local capillary trapping mechanism. Attempts to quantify the nonwetting phase saturation and extent of LCT persistence serve as the initial steps to potentially reduce the risks associated with long-term storage security.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractPersonal interactions are an important element of an individual’s health and life quality in the long term. As the site of many interpersonal interactions has been moved to the digital domain, human society has never been more intertwined. The digital footprints of interpersonal interactions can be quantified and measured via smartphones and wearables, providing more objective, quantitative, and accurate measurements. This chapter focuses on quantifying personal relationships in the context of quality of life, specifically focusing on novel technology-based quantification solutions. It first analyzes traditional qualitative quality of life measures based on subjective self-reporting that include measures of personal relationships, specifically the WHOQOL-BREF, WHOQOL-100, RAND-36, KIDSCREEN-27, SWLS, and Beach Center FQOL, as well as other non-validated measures. The chapter then proposes novel technological solutions for data gathering and analysis by introducing the concept of digital item representation, a process that leverages personal datasets originating from smartphones and wearables. The chapter also discusses issues relating to users’ privacy that influence the acceptance of such everyday technologies as well as the quality of data collected in the long term.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In thinking about intellectual property issues for 20 years as a federal appel late judge, particularly copyright issues that place in tension the claims of authors and of those who advocate a broad public domain, I have been struck by the gulf that often exists between scholars writing and thinking hard about these questions and judges obliged to decide discrete controversies. Judges are a considerable distance from the factual information that most scholars have at their fingertips, such as the arcana of computer technology, and most ofus are somewhat removed from the doctrinal familiarity of intellectual property scholars.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter asks how, in the context of the medical humanities, we might productively think across disciplinary domains and boundaries. It draws on Ian McEwan’s Saturday as a focus for positioning the question of interdisciplinarity within a specifically British context. The first section, ‘The two cultures’, surveys the ‘two cultures’ debate and its legacy and discusses the appearance of Matthew Arnold’s poem ‘Dover Beach’ at a critical point of the novel. In the second section, ‘A third culture?’, the focus turns to McEwan’s engagement with popular science discourses and argues that it underpins a discernible conservatism in his work. The final section, ‘An unbounded view’, reads Saturday against the grain to argue that, in McEwan’s treatment of dementia a more positive, open-ended model for thinking across the arts and sciences might be seen to emerge.

Abstract (sommario):
In order to meet the requirements of engineering testing and reduce system development costs, LabVIEW 8.0 is used as the software development platform to design a set of equipment vibration signal acquisition and analysis system. The signal of the device under test is collected through the sensor, and then transferred to the LabVIEW development platform through the computer after hardware conditioning. In addition to displaying the waveform, the platform can realize time domain analysis and frequency domain analysis through system processing; the system also has data storage and offline signals Analysis and other functions. By comparing the turntable data of the vibration test bench measured by the system with the existing test data, it proves that the system is complete and accurate. At the same time, the system is applied to the on-site inspection of tamping coke oven equipment.

Abstract (sommario):
In order to be prepared for today's knowledge society, students need to be ICT literate. To ensure that all students become ICT literate requires systematic integration of ICT literacy into the curriculum at the general education level and within each academic discipline. Such integration requires faculty ICT literacy as it applies to their academic content area and instructional practice. Collaboration within academic domains, with expert partnerships of librarians and instructional designers, can boost ICT literacy and facilitate its effective integration for student learning. Therefore, such faculty competency also requires systematic coordination, training, support, and accountability. Efforts need to occur at the course, program, college, campus, and system level in order to ensure that all students learn, practice and apply ICT effectively and responsibly. The California State University Long Beach ICT Literacy Project exemplifies the process of developing a systematic and coordinated approach to ICT literacy into the curriculum.

Abstract (sommario):
The ability to deliver personalized advertising messages has long been a major objective in marketing since it allows marketers to meet heterogeneous consumer needs and target their messages more effectively (Arens & Bovee, 1994). However, traditional one-to-many marketing approaches applied in mass media suffer from their inability to meet this objective (Dibb, 1998; Hoffman & Novak, 1997). In order to increase the efficiency of their strategy, marketers identify homogeneous groups of consumers (market segmentation) which they target according to their marketing objectives. Thus, market segmentation has become the most important marketing tool for targeting purposes (McBurnie & Clutterbuck, 1998), also utilized in the TV advertising domain in conjunction with domain-specific features such as time zones and/or program typologies. However, this strategy has admittedly little to offer towards the ultimate goal of one-to-one communication, since the targeted unit is the segment rather than the individual consumer, and therefore individual needs cannot be satisfied. In the broadcasting television advertising domain, media coverage either exceeds the targeted market segment or leaves potential customers without exposure to the message, thus reducing its cost effectiveness (Belch & Belch, 1995). At the same time, TV viewers have to deal with a vast amount of available advertising information. The issue of information overload, typical in information theoretic terms, is also experienced in the case of TV advertisements as advertising clutter, which has been identified as one of the significant factors associated with the negative attitude of viewers towards advertising and can have a negative impact on television advertisement recall or recognition (Mord & Gilson, 1985). Relevant surveys reveal that 80% of the viewers feel that there is “too much advertising in television” (Elliott & Speck, 1998), while more than 75% of consumers are not happy with the broadcasted advertisements (Hawkins, Best, & Coney, 1998 ). Current target marketing methods are limited in their ability to efficiently target consumers at the individual level, particularly in mass media such as television. Thus, personalization of advertisements provides marketers with the opportunity to increase advertising effectiveness by targeting consumers who are most likely to respond positively to the advertising message. The present article investigates appropriate personalization methods for the domain of digital television advertisements by examining relevant methods utilized for personalized Web applications. In addition, it is concerned with the design of the interactive elements of a typical 30-second advertisement in support of the personalization process. The two objectives of this article are interrelated: the selection of a personalization technique affects the design of interactive advertisements since it indicates the type of interaction data that should be collected in order to enable personalization. The next section of this article opens up the discussion on personalization from a theoretical point of view and in the following section specific personalization techniques are compared. Next, the types of interaction data required to achieve personalization are discussed and the article concludes with further discussion and conclusions.

Abstract (sommario):
The feature selection from gene expression data is the NP hard problem, few of evolutionary techniques give optimal solutions to find feature subsets. In this chapter, authors introduce some evolutionary optimization techniques and proposed a Binary Particle Swarm Optimization (BPSO) based algorithm for feature subset selection. The Feature selection is one of the important and challenging tasks for gene expression data where many traditional methods failed and evolutionary based methods were succeeded. In this study, the initial datasets are preprocessed using a quartile based fast heuristic technique to reduce the crude domain features which are less relevant in categorizing the samples of either group. The experimental results on three bench-mark datasets vis-a-vis colon cancer, defused B-cell lymphoma and leukemia data are evaluated by means of classification accuracies. Detailed comparative studies with some of popular existing algorithms like Genetic Algorithm (GA), Multi Objective GA are also made to show the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The American Law Institute (ALI) has devoted much attention to tort law. This attention has come in different forms. This chapter labels these, respectively: “ALI in the Mode of Appellate Court,” “ALI in the Mode of Law Reform Commission,” and “ALI in the Mode of Think Tank.” These modes can be placed along a spectrum of ambitiousness with respect to law reform. None is unambitious. But Appellate Court Mode is tethered to doctrine, Think Tank Mode is untethered. Law Reform Commission Mode lies somewhere in between. One might suppose that the ALI’s promise—which enables leading academics, in consultation with bench, bar, and others, to undertake long-term, large-scale research projects—resides in work at the more ambitious end of this spectrum. However, based on an admittedly impressionistic survey, the chapter suggests that, in the domain of tort law, the ALI has had important successes when proceeding in the manner of an appellate court, and has courted trouble when operating in the other modes.

Abstract (sommario):
On all but one of the field trips in my Field Ecology course, I take my students to the sorts of places that they have been to before: the beach, the pinelands, the Highlands forest, farms, old fields, streams, salt marshes, suburbs. But on the third trip, after the ones to the campus and to the experimental plots at Hutcheson Forest, we go to a place that is, for all its superficial familiarity, altogether different and exotic. This trip is to America’s deserted empire, what the person who knew it best, ecologist Frank Egler, described as the Right of way Domain. Right-of-way land comprises at least fifty to seventy-five million acres in the United States, an area larger than New England. It is disposed as long strips of property along railroad tracks, roads, and canals; under power lines; and above buried pipelines. Many of these rights-of-way, even those in heavily populated areas, are scarcely ever visited by people—they are cut off from human presence by fences, no-trespassing signs, patrolling police, dense vegetation, and a scarcity of reasons to set foot in them. True, some abandoned rights-of-way have been put to use. The tow-path and adjacent land along the old Delaware–Raritan Canal, which winds its way for many miles through central New Jersey, has become a very long, very narrow, very popular state park. Indeed, this is the park that has helped protect the forest along the Millstone River, which I de-scribed earlier. Hunters love the rights-of-way under power lines, which attract deer and small game. And disused railroad lines have been turned into foot and bike trails in several parts of the country. But many rights-of-way, totaling a huge amount of land, go for months or years without feeling a human step or hearing a human voice. These places are them-selves neither urban nor suburban nor rural; neither settled nor wilder-ness. They are a quintessential part of what author James Howard Kunstler has called “the geography of nowhere.” In my right-of-way trip we start with a boggy strip of land above a transcontinental gas pipeline.

Abstract (sommario):
Investigation of passive steering concepts using MATLAB SIMULINK for their application in a modified Tram 2000 The rail vehicle industry is one of the most traditional and thus also rather conservative industries in mechanical engineering. Nevertheless, alongside innovative topics such as the advancing autonomisation or the establishment of hydrogen fuel cell technologies, there are also concepts for the active guidance of rail vehicles. As a young, up-and-coming startup, we at Traila are developing just such an active steering concept (Traila Active Steering), which, in addition to noise emissions, above all reduces wear in the rail-wheel contact. In our current project phase, we have taken over a tram type T2000 in cooperation with the Zurich Transport Authority (VBZ), with which we can now provide prototypical functional proof of our technology. Within the framework of safety-relevant investigations, passive control concepts as well as active control concepts were examined for the selfdeveloped, actively controlled bogie. In this presentation, different kinematics for passive control are investigated with regard to their adaptation for the Tram 2000, using a specially developed rail-wheel library in MATLAB SIMULINK. In addition to the dynamic investigations on the model, the presentation focuses in particular on an assessment of passive safety with the help of the tools available in MATLAB SIMULINK. It is shown how, based on hydraulic, mechanical, control and external libraries, a domain-spanning multi-physical model is built up as a virtual twin of the T2000, in particular of our modifications, and processed for use in a HIL test bench.

Abstract (sommario):
Scholar dropout is a challenge for educational institutions. It is caused by many factors that should be known to be treated. Some analytical tools can help in this intent, especially when the proper data is well organized in a consistent structure and format. This paper presents a technical approach to allow homogeneous analysis for different scholar data sources, applying it to the dropout domain. This proposal makes use of an ontology to provide a better under- standing of the domain semantics, and to act as an interlanguage for the creation of standardized repositories from where dropout data can be analyzed.

Abstract (sommario):
Sensitive information being shared on the internet is growing. Becauseof this, it is increasingly necessary to take security measureswhilst this information travels in the network. Digital steganographyallows one to send sensitive information in a hidden manner.Although there is a plethora of techniques for such a goal, findingan appropriate one is not always simple. This paper implementsand compares spatial-domain digital steganography techniques inboth RGB and grayscale images. A frequency-domain heuristic forreducing the visual impact of digital steganography in grayscaleimages is presented. As another result of this work, a dataset is alsoavailable in the Kaggle platform with 18 GB of images, containingsecret messages using the techniques under study. In addition, aPython language library was also made available in the PyPI repository, allowing for both concealment and revelation of messagesusing the presented digital steganography methods.

In recent years, the concept of situational-awareness has been exploredby the information systems areas in order to analyze contextsensitivedata. This approach seeks to detect a particular state ofinterest in reality, that is, a contextual situation and react accordingly, helping to improve adaptability to changing domain conditions. In this paper, we describe a conceptual architecture focused onthe representation of contextual situations through business rulesand their integration with business processes. As a proof of concept,an application for real-time monitoring of medical deviceswas implemented. This work has shown that bringing situationalawareness to information systems can reduce the complexity ofbusiness processes as well as increase the reliability of the domainrepresentation model.

Abstract (sommario):
Software Product Lines can be briefly defined as a family of productsthat share some commonalities. The feature models approach isused to represent the commonalities and variabilities among products. One possible way for the construction of these models is theuse of meta-models. However, the management of these features, traditionally performed at development time, is not sufficient forthe development of Adaptive Systems. One solution to this type ofdevelopment is the approach of Dynamic Software Product Lineswhich has as one of its aims to promote features input and outputat runtime allowing the product to be adapted after changes incontexts. This article proposes a Domain Specific Modelling Languagethat aims at modeling Dynamic Software Product Lines. Thislanguage describes dynamic adaptations promoted at runtime andthrough the use of the state machine approach. Such adaptations, based on state machines, must promote state features changes orfeatures exchanges at runtime, enabling these software products tomanage derivations in its life cycle. Our proposal was implementedwith the use of a Healthcare scenario and its development wasbased on the concept of the component service model.

ABSTRACTIn recent years, due to the significant volume of produced textdocuments, challenges have arisen in the search and analysis ofcontent, necessitating the development of techniques for the extractionof useful information. In the field of Law, where the majority ofinformation is in legal texts, information extraction has become crucialfor discovering knowledge in unstructured data. Named entityrecognition, driven by the advancement of deep learning models, stands out as the main technique for this task. This project aimedto explore the possibility of expanding the number of explanatoryvariables beyond those available on the institutional website ofTribunal de Contas da União, using natural language processingtechniques in the Special Accounting processes. The developmentof the proposal included web scraping for data collection, preprocessingof pieces, entity annotation, fine-tuning pre-trained modelsin the legal domain and named entity recognition task, in additionto extracting entities. From the selected texts, 388,201 records(tokens and/or phrases) were extracted, with 286,781 and 101,420records from the Instruction and Judgment pieces, respectively, confirmingthe research hypothesis and demonstrating the feasibilityof expanding variables using natural language processing.

Abstract (sommario):
There is an increasing interest in image-to-image translation withapplications ranging from generating maps from satellite images tocreating entire clothes’ images from only contours. In the presentwork, we investigate image-to-image translation using GenerativeAdversarial Networks (GANs) for generating new data, taking as acase study the morphing of giraffes images into bird images. Morphinga giraffe into a bird is a challenging task, as they have differentscales, textures, and morphology. An unsupervised cross-domaintranslator entitled InstaGAN was trained on giraffes and birds, along with their respective masks, to learn translation betweenboth domains. A dataset of synthetic bird images was generatedusing translation from originally giraffe images while preservingthe original spatial arrangement and background. It is important tostress that the generated birds do not exist, being only the result of alatent representation learned by InstaGAN. Two subsets of commonliterature datasets were used for training the GAN and generatingthe translated images: COCO and Caltech-UCSD Birds 200-2011.To evaluate the realness and quality of the generated images andmasks, qualitative and quantitative analyses were made. For thequantitative analysis, a pre-trained Mask R-CNN was used for thedetection and segmentation of birds on Pascal VOC, Caltech-UCSDBirds 200-2011, and our new dataset entitled FakeSet. The generateddataset achieved detection and segmentation results close tothe real datasets, suggesting that the generated images are realisticenough to be detected and segmented by a state-of-the-art deepneural network.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents an efficient boundary condition to simulate outgoing waves at the boundaries of the truncated domain in a three-dimensional numerical wave tank. The present study is based on coupling of two prescribed boundary conditions, namely, numerical beach and Orlanski boundary conditions. The use of a numerical beach is known to be efficient in the high frequency range, however, Orlanski boundary condition has been successfully applied in the low frequency range. The proposed study is based on coupling of these two prescribed boundary conditions to make use of their complementary bandwidths. The model has been calibrated to determine the optimal length and the most efficient damping factor within the numerical beach region. The semi-infinite tank has then been used to simulate nonlinear wave propagation in shallow water. The results of this simulation have been verified through a comparison with previous published experimental measurements. The model is then further applied to simulate the nonlinear wave diffraction by and the associated hydrodynamic forces on a bottom mounted surface piercing circular uniform cylinder. Further investigation of the efficiency of the coupled boundary condition when using a spatially-varying damping factor in the presence of scattered wave field is presented.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this research was to understand the potential impact of drag reducing agents (DRA) on internal corrosion of liquid hydrocarbon pipelines. The first task of this project included a comprehensive review of literature and knowledge, both in public domain and from industry experience, on the effect of DRA on water and solid transport in liquid hydrocarbons, and possible interactions with other performance chemicals typically used in the oil and gas industry. This was the basis for defining the final bench test methodology and test matrix to be performed in the second task. A novel bench-top apparatus was designed based on a vertical Couette cell approach, and a test methodology was successfully implemented to evaluate the potential effect(s) of DRA on water accumulation and localized corrosion at the oil/water interface. A test matrix was conducted with two DRAs (a water based and an oil based) and two corrosion inhibitors (a water soluble and an oil soluble) at a given test condition (3.5% NaCl saturated with 97%CO2/3%O2, pH ~6 at 80 oF). Abstract (sommario):
This study examines the potential impact of sea level rise (SLR) caused by climate change on the effects of extratropical cyclones, also known as nor?easters, in four New England coastal parks: Acadia National Park (ACAD), Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area (BOHA), Boston National Historical Park (BOST) and Cape Cod National Seashore (CACO). A multi-method approach is employed, including a literature review, observational data analysis, coupled hydrodynamic-wave numerical modeling, 3D visualizations, and communication of findings. The literature review examines previous studies of nor?easters and associated storm surges in New England and SLR projections across the study domain due to climate change. The observational data analysis evaluates the characteristics of nor?easters and their effects, providing a basis for validating the model. Numerical modeling is performed using the Advanced Circulation (ADCIRC) model, coupled with the Simulating Waves in the Nearshore (SWAN) model to simulate storm surges and waves. The model was validated against available observations and demonstrated its ability to simulate water levels, inland inundation, and wave heights in the study area with high accuracy. The validated model was used to simulate three powerful nor?easters (April 2007, January 2018, and March 2018) and each storm was simulated for three sea levels, (1) a baseline mean sea level representative of the year 2020, as well as with a (2) 1 ft of SLR and (3) 1 m of SLR. Analysis of the model output was used to assess the vulnerability of the parks to nor?easters by examining peak impacts in the park areas. Additional simulations were conducted to evaluate the role of waves in predicting peak water levels and the impact of inlet configurations on storm surges within coastal embayments behind the barrier beach systems in the southern Cape Cod region. The project developed maps, three-dimensional visualizations, and an interpretive film to assist the parks in planning for resource management, maintenance, emergency management, visitor access, safety, education, and outreach. These tools provide a better understanding of the potential impacts of nor?easters and SLR and enable the parks to better prepare for future storms.
