Leclerc, Camille.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Global changes, because of human activities, are associated with numerous population declines and species extinctions, which are especially pronounced in island systems. The important biodiversity of such ecosystems is particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic pressures because of several characteristics (e.g. island syndrome, low functional redundancy, island geographical isolation). Despite this increased vulnerability, few studies have so far looked at these systems as a study model for assessing patterns of threats to the different facets of diversity (taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic). However, such work would improve our understanding of islands threats. In this sense, the aim of this PhD thesis is to describe patterns of insular endemic diversity in the current context of global changes and in a future climate change context, by exploring different facets of diversity. The purpose of this work is to highlight potential conservation priorities for these particularly vulnerable ecosystems. We have addressed all of this thesis work on a large scale using two databases of worldwide islands and endemic species. In a first part, we characterized threats to island ecosystems at a global scale and also explored their distributions within different taxonomic groups and island regions. In a second part, we analyzed the impact of threats on the functional component of island endemic biodiversity. In a third part, we have identified priority areas for insular endemic biodiversity representativeness and conservation across different dimensions of biodiversity and explored their levels of protection through protected areas and threats affecting them. In a last part, we studied the future vulnerability of islands and endemic biodiversity to climate change by 2050 based on endemic mammals. In the light of our results (identification of major threats whose importance varies according to the taxonomic groups, the island regions and also the dimensions of biodiversity considered), we discussed the implications of global changes for island endemic biodiversity in a conservation context. This PhD thesis reveals the importance of integrating multiple threats and diversity dimensions for global changes and conservation approaches

Abstract (sommario):
Will Kymlicka’s seminal work on Multicultural Citizenship has done much to advance the case for minority rights worldwide. Agreeing with communitarians that culture is important, yet unwilling to relinquish liberal equality and fairness, Kymlicka builds on John Rawls’s monumental Theory of Justice to show group rights are not only accord with liberalism, but are its true fulfilment. Yet, while Kymlicka’s theory has received accolades for elegantly tying liberalism and culturalism together theoretically, it has been met with equal scepticism over the tenability of its praxis. In this book, I argue that much of the criticism wielded against Kymlicka’s theory results from his crucial reliance on the definition of societal cultures and the contradictions embedded therein. This is further compounded by the tendency of Kymlicka to neglect his commitment to dynamic culture and liberalism in favour of a monolithic treatment of culture, leading us down the path to illiberal conclusions. I suggest that for Kymlicka’s theory of “Multicultural Citizenship” to embrace a truly vibrant multiculturalism, the theory must overcome its internal contradictions and reaffirm its commitment to a multi-layered and recursive approach to group rights. I shall review the strengths and weaknesses of Kymlicka’s theory set against contemporary debates on the topics of nationalism and minority rights and will suggest how the theory can reduce its inner tensions to embolden its critical support for multiculturalism in Canada and worldwide.

Abstract (sommario):
The sculptures I create reflect the elements of the natural world such as trees, the lumpy bush, clumps of turf. They have imperfect yet fascinating textures, picturesque in form, seemingly fractal in design, working together harmoniously to serve the aesthetic. My sculptures, like these natural shapes, are heavy or thicker toward the bottom and lighter toward the top, like a tree or stone. I strive to echo the mercurial, the animated natural surfaces, and the enticing vignettes one would experience on a woodland stroll.

Abstract (sommario):
The ecologically important small remnant habitats are becoming fewer in modern agriculture due to the intensification of agricultural landscapes that have resulted in an increasingly fragmented landscape. In order to provide an ideal conservation framework for small habitats, such as midfield islets, several studies about the organisms on the islets, their diversity and distribution are needed. In this study I investigated the diversity of mosses and lichens on open midfield islets with and without shrubs and trees in an open and a forest-dominated landscape. The analysis of species diversity in the study suggests that, overall; there are more species of mosses and lichens in the open landscape in relation to the forest-dominated landscape, and on the opened islets lacking shrub and tree vegetation. These environments consist of dry and rocky soils and overgrow relatively slowly, which is favourable for mosses and lichens. There was no significant correlation between diversity and size of the midfield islets or their distance to forest. The number of species in a habitat may depend on regional species pool and the number of potential colonizers but also local processes. Furthermore, it is important to mention that the study suggests that the diversity of mosses and lichens is influenced by the conditions on the midfield islands, such as shrub and tree cover. These conditions, combined with a variation within these small habitats can create good conditions for a landscape with high diversity.

Abstract (sommario):
For a long time, biodiversity was characterised solely by its taxonomic diversity, i.e. the number and species composition of assemblages. However, recent studies show that biodiversity cannot be summed up solely by this component as it does not take into account the ecological characteristics of species. For this, functional diversity is a tool for considering the functional traits of species. Few large-scale studies have described this facet of biodiversity and its link with taxonomic diversity. The aim of this thesis is therefore to 1) describe and understand the distribution of functional diversity of freshwater fish assemblages on a global scale and 2) quantify the consequences of human activities on this facet. For this purpose, we have built a database of functional traits of more than 9000 species of freshwater fish. We have shown that the world's functional diversity is very heterogeneously distributed. It is essentially concentrated in the Neotropical basins, contrasting with taxonomically rich but functionally redundant areas such as Africa or Asia. These patterns could be explained by a functional diversification of certain orders of Neotropical fish. At the watershed scale, we showed a weak, but significant, influence of environmental variables, in particular historical variables, to explain the heterogeneity of the functional diversity patterns of watersheds. We have also shown that human activities, under the effect of species introductions, have contributed to a significant change in functional diversity patterns compared to changes in taxonomic diversity. These changes highlight the need to take into account the consequences of non-native species on ecosystem functioning. In this thesis work, we have thus demonstrated that functional diversity is a complementary facet of taxonomic diversity in freshwater fish. These results contribute to knowledge of the structure of assemblages and may have implications in terms of biodiversity management

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this thesis was to characterized the spatial patterns of inter- and intraspecific diversity within riverine networks, to better understand the ecological and evolutionary processes underlying them and to explore how the different facets of biodiversity interact with one another. First, I developed novel statistical approaches allowing the application of causal modeling to data in the form of pairwise matrices, thus allowing the study within integrative frameworks of several biodiversity facets at the alpha and beta levels. I then studied integratively the patterns of interspecific and intraspecific genetic diversity and of intraspecific genetic and intraspecific phenotypic diversity within the Garonne-Dordogne river basin. Finally, I used an eco-evolutionary metapopulation dynamics model to assess the impacts of the structure and environmental gradients that characterize riverine networks on local adaptation

Adesina, Anthonia. "Diversity officers : symbols of diversity-oriented organizational culture change programmes". Thesis, Cardiff University, 2017. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/106475/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
As British society becomes increasingly more diverse, the concept of managing organizational diversity has become progressively more relevant. Theoretical developments within this field have increasingly argued that the adoption of, and approach to, diversity management by organizations is based on either the business case arguments or the moral justification arguments or sometimes on a combination of both. However, insights integrating diversity management approaches with micro and macro-organizational influences remain conceptual. Furthermore, while theoretical developments in the field of diversity management have increasingly associated successful diversity management with wider organizational culture change programs, there has been no empirical evaluation of the processes involved. This thesis explores the role of diversity officers in the implementation of diversity-oriented culture change programs. This research focuses on a single case study of an NHS organization within the United Kingdom. The evidence provided is based on observation data obtained within a 6 month period of shadowing the diversity officer within this organization. Alongside these are data obtained from 48 semi-structured interviews with employees across hierarchical and functional areas in the organization. These were supplemented by archival data, as well as data obtained from informal conversations, attendance at meetings and events and training sessions. The values-based approach adopted in this thesis recognizes diversity officers as crucial players within the field of organizational diversity management. This thesis concludes that contrary to literature which suggests that the existing values, experiences and attitudes of diversity officers determine the organization’s approach to equality and diversity management, this approach is determined by the influence of existing influential micro and macroorganizational factors. This thesis also reveals the invaluable influence of the position of diversity officers on the process of organizational culture change; highlighting their influence on the processes of realization and symbolization involved in the progression of organizational culture change.

Race tension has increased in America as contemporary issues occur. Riots and protests are becoming common once again. The research presented shows how park space can help foster diversity and in turn improve race relations in the Kansas City area. The study shows how communities in Kansas City became segregated based on historical laws, regulations, and common day practices that reinforced racial boundaries between communities. Many still feel racial tension stemming from historical events today. A focus on integration within communities can be the first step in creating harmony and healing people who have felt these negative impacts on their lives. A literature review, including historical documents from Kansas City and similarly structured racially divided cities, such as St. Louis, Missouri, Detroit, Michigan, and Chicago, Illinois, were analyzed. Research lead to focusing in on Swope Park and the surrounding community. Swope Park has a complex history of segregation and is located near Troost Avenue, which is one of the greatest racial divide lines in the United States. To the west of Troost Avenue the race is predominantly white while to the east is composed mostly of African Americans. On site observational surveys and short interviews with users of Swope Park were conducted to determine current use, users, and park qualities. Qualtrics Surveys were released to community organization to survey a larger group of people, some of whom might not currently use the park. The analyzed information gathered helped shape an innovative design suggestion and strategy to promote diversity and integration at Swope Park. This research can help shape a diverse future of racially integrated communities in the Kansas City area to promote economic stimuli, break down racial stigmas, and increase education, understanding, and celebration of diverse racial backgrounds.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis aims to address a significant issue related with the consumption of diversified data in the field of semantics and knowledge representation by using a framework which allows the data consumption in a generic, scalable and pleasing manner. The work proposes a mixed solution by splitting the issue into four subproblems: how to preserve the richness associated with the data; how to present information about an object in a single or multiple visualization contexts; and to provide a seamless exploration of interconnected entities; and how to design a tool that offers a better user experience. A real-world object can have various representations which lead to data diversity. However, each representation captures a view (mostly partial) of an object. To preserve the richness associated with the data, we follow an entity-centric design approach. In this approach, we represent multiple datasets related to an object as an entity with various properties. An entity is then further categorized in a group according to its similarities or differences. Our contextual model not only considers the transformation of objects as entities but also adapts to various visualization contexts. These contexts are space, list, timeline, and network. We design a multiview visualization framework that allows simultaneous presentation of entities according to these four defined visualization contexts. To allow seamless interaction of data with the users, we emphasized on using a multilayered architecture where: 1)datasets are aggregated and stored using an entity-centric approach, 2) visualized in various contexts and viewpoints simultaneously according to the entity types and users' need. This adaptation is capable enough to facilitate presentation and exploration of diversified data according to users need. To prove the feasibility of our framework, we applied it to visualize diversified data in various settings. Continuous interaction with the end users produced valuable feedback and essential design suggestions. Finally, multiple prototypes were evaluated with the end users to verify their usability. The results obtained were highly favorable.

Abstract (sommario):

This study aimed to identify and analyze the relationship between the official discourse of an organization about their sexual diversity policies and homophobia and the speech of its employees about the practices of these policies in their labor relations. In order to accomplish this, (a) bibliometric research was carried out covering ninety academic studies about the theme in the last ten years; and (b) within the field of research, was selected a company that discloses in its reports a pro-sexual diversity position. To counter the organizational content of speech with the employee was carried out data collection through documentary and oral sources, then treated using content analysis. Both the analysis of the documents as reports were guided by three categories developed a priori based on literature: (1) sexual diversity organizational policies; (2) interpersonal relationships and sexual orientation at workplace; (3) society, sexual orientation and homophobia. The categorization made it possible to identify and analyze points of convergence and divergence with the discourses of organizational level. Thus, one can see an increasing convergence between speeches with regard to benefits and external actions of the LGBT community support policies, but a big departure from the formal prohibition of discrimination and reports of experiences and homophobic comments. Although the company provides some good practices in relation to the Brazilian context, such policies are insufficient when compared to homophobia reports in the organization and other possibilities present in the literature.

Everton, Wilma. "SAPS members' experience of diversity and diversity training within the SAPS". Thesis, Rhodes University, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002482.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
During this study, an attempt was made to explore the opinions and attitudes of members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) towards issues of diversity before, immediately after and three months after participating in diversity training workshops presented by the SAPS Training Division during 1997 in Port Elizabeth. The aim of this thesis was not to assess the diversity training itself, but to discover if the training, as currently presented, in any way influenced the attitudes of participants. In order to meet this goal, literature and empirical studies were conducted. The literature study sets the theoretical foundation pertaining to the history of the SAPS and the attitudes and prejudices of and diversity among SAPS members. During the empirical research phase, a non-probability purposive sampling procedure was adopted. Four of a range of diversity workshops presented by the Training Division of the SAPS during 1997 were selected for the purpose of this study. An internal SAPS process was used to nominate members to attend the workshops. The researcher requested the participants in each of the four workshops to complete a self-administered questionnaire before as well as after the workshop concerned. Immediately after each of the four workshops, a short interview was held with each attendee. To explore the stability of any change evident from responses on the questionnaires completed after the workshops, the attendees were again requested to complete the same questionnaire three months later. To increase the validity of any conclusion that attitudinal change was related to the workshop, a control group was used. This study has revealed that a cross-spectrum of SAPS members of both sexes and diverse racial backgrounds believe that various forms of discrimination exist within the SAPS. It confirmed that the diversity training presented by the SAPS Training Division is a useful instrument to heighten members' awareness of the different norms and customs of other cultural/ethnic groups and of the necessity that the SAPS should be constituted of a cross-spectrum of racial groups reflecting the South African society. Finally, based on the research findings, recommendations were made involving management and its supportive services and diversity training.

Abstract (sommario):
In the global change context, the biodiversity in the Mediterranean is under threat, mainly due to the more intense drought, which could lead to modification of ecosystem functioning. This thesis focuses on the effects of higher drought on the aboveground vegetation and the modulation of these effects by plant diversity thanks to a precipitation exclusion experiment in a shrubland in the south of France whith a natural diversity gradient. The 4 dominant shrub species performances, the specific and functional diversity, the interspecific interaction, and the biodiversity-productivity relationship were studied under 2 rain levelsAfter 2,5 years the effects of increased drought on the 4 dominant shrub performances was species- and parameter-dependant and can be modulated by the diversity of the co-dominant species. Q. coccifera seems the most resistant and resilient, followed by R. officinalis and finally by C. albidus and U. parviflorus. This is partly explained by the different strategies of acquisition, utilization and conservation of carbon and water of the four species. The leaf traits, the functional and specific diversity are not significantly affected by the precipitation decrease, but they depend on the number, the identity and the cover of the dominant shrubs. Given the differential effect of higher drought on the dominant species performances, we could expect an indirect negative effect of drought on the shrubland diversity and so on ecosystem functioning. We confirm the importance of taking into account the biotic factors in models aiming to predict the ecosystem functioning and environmental risks and services under future in the climate change context

Pan, Jingwen. "Labyrinthulomycetes diversity meta-analysis". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/56302.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Labyrinthulomycetes are a group of ubiquitous stramenopiles that inhabit a wide range of habitats and play important ecological roles as nutrient recyclers and sometimes disease causing agents. Even though they have had a long history of being studied, their diversity has not yet been fully explored. The lack of a comprehensive reference database with up-to-date phylogeny also hinders any pursuits in understanding the ecological distribution of this group. This study was designed with the purpose of constructing a curated reference database and a phylogenetic tree based on existing 18S rDNA data, and then using this database to uncover any hidden diversity and novelty among Labyrinthulomycetes and provide a reference guidance for future identification. Using the newly-created reference database, I also analyzed high-throughput environmental sequencing data from two databases. My results reveal extensive diversity within the Labyrinthulomycetes, and recover many previously unknown environmental sequences, greatly expanding our knowledge of the ecological distribution of this group. The high-throughput environmental sequencing data analysis also shows some of the newly identified environmental clades to be particularly abundant in the ocean. The phylogenetic framework I have provided in this study, together with the metadata I have compiled, will serve as a useful tool for future ecological and evolutionary studies of this widespread lineage.

Abstract (sommario):
While the majority of literature written in regard to artist Romaine Brooks has focused on her portraiture of cross-dressing women, I intend to focus on other aspects of her oeuvre which are often neglected. Therefore, I will examine works depicting women produced or exhibited by Brooks during the years 1910 and 1911 when her output was at its most varied. I have divided these works into four different categories: nudes, interior scenes, balcony scenes, and portraits. These paintings prove that while Brooks painted in a traditional fashion, she also subtly challenged the role of women in art and society.

Bayer, Julia. "Media Diversity in Deutschland". Diss., Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, 2013. http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bvb:19-160865.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Hart, Brian. "MLSE diversity receiver structures". Thesis, University of Canterbury. Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/6033.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis presents the design and analysis of MLSE diversity receivers for linearly modulated signals transmitted over known and unknown time- and frequency-selective channels, corrupted by additive Gaussian noise. The extended MLSE receiver structure of Ungerboeck [56] is extended further; for the case of a known but time-varying, frequency-selective channel with diversity. The error event analysis technique of Forney [22] is used to approximate and bound the receiver's BER. The MLSE predictor receiver of Yu and Pasupathy [64] for unknown Rayleigh fading channels is also extended, to the case of Ricean fading, con-elated diversity threads, uncertain carrier frequency and phase, and unknown symbol timing. The received signal's second order statistics are needed to compute the predictors, and two methods are proposed that achieve this in the Rayleigh fading channel. The MLSE predictor receiver's BER is bounded, assuming ideal knowledge of the received signal's second order statistics.

Abstract (sommario):
The ability to target consumer segments and achieve a match between the product or promotional instrument and the consumer self-concept is stressed in the marketing literature. The online quality of a website has been said to have a positive impact on intention to use a website and perform a search, with preference for a website linked to perceptions of its credibility. Website preferences cam also encourage or discourage consumers’ purchasing intentions and the perceived visual attractiveness of a website is said to have a greater impact on e-loyalty and consumer retention than traditional attributes such as product selection and price. The important impact of preferences necessitates an understanding of the factors in a website that can appeal or not to people. Unfortunately, until as recently as 2004, studies investigating website aesthetics were anchored in the universalist paradigm which assumed that reactions would be universally held rather than differentiated according to demographic variables. A Canadian study in 2005 documented differences in reaction by gender but this study was inadequate in using a single commercial stimulus which had not been selected on any particular basis. Prior to this, research on web aesthetics was rooted in the universalist aesthetic in assuming that a single set of factors would suit all tastes. The overview describes the work by the author to ascertain the extent to which website productions differ by segmentation variables and the extent to which preferences can also be segmented. The author’s work has isolated the impact of segmentation variables (gender, personality and nationality) on website productions and of gender on website preferences and the overview focuses on gender since the impact of this variable has been explored in relation to productions and preferences.

Abstract (sommario):
Diversity of a country is often measured by the amount and spread of nationalities that live there. But also within a country, regions vary in their traditions and culture. Cultural homogeneity within communities is mixed up by (internal) migration, that, like international migration, increases diversity of a place. In a novel approach I therefore look at diversity in German municipality associations measured by different family names and investigate the effect it has on the number of generated patents. I show that cultural diversity and openness of a place affect its economic performance positively in terms of innovation also when referring to intra-country differences.

Abstract (sommario):
Although it is often anticipated that demographic diversity in decision-making teams will enhance decision quality because individuals will offer unique perspectives, there is little empirical support for this hypothesis. Diverse work teams usually suffer from poor communication and are prone to conflict because individuals are so different from each other. My dissertation research tries to better understand how demographic diversity affects individuals in teams by examining the team decision-making process in depth. I study the intervening process variables of conflict and miscommunication, as well as the outcome variables of team identity and decision quality. I also examine how communication media affect individuals in these same teams. I conducted a field experiment. Subjects were assigned to conditions based on their actual roles in an organization. Using a balanced 2 x 2 design, I constructed demographically diverse and homogenous work teams along the dimensions of organizational function, racial-ethnic minority status, and sex. Teams communicated face-to-face or using computer-mediated communication technology. Results indicate that demographic diversity has both a positive and a negative effect on the ability of individuals to identify with their team and to negotiate higher quality decisions. Results also show that when teams' communication was computer mediated, individuals in these teams had weaker team identity and lower decision quality. An intervening process theory involving miscommunication and conflict is supported.

Rayfield, Blake K. "Technological Diversity in Finance". ScholarWorks@UNO, 2018. https://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/2488.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The dissertation consists of two chapters on measuring firms technological profile. Patent data can be grouped into two primary generations. The first generation lead by the work of Schmookler (1966), Scherer (1982), and Griliches (1984), and the second generation led by Trajtenberg, Jaffe, and Henderson (1997) and Kogan et al. (2016). When combined, both generations data spans from nearly 1926-2010 and has made a meaningful impact on innovation research. In the first chapter, I propose a third generation of patent data. The third generation of patent data has two distinct contributions. First, it extends patent-firm ownership information beyond 2010 to 2016. The new dataset uses the established connections of previous datasets and builds on that information with additional data on firm names gathered from EDGAR. Second, it takes advantage of the information contained in the text of patents using text analysis. Using text analysis allows for greater flexibility over traditional measures. The second chapter investigates how ownership structure affects firm value. The previous literature has assumed more innovation is better, meaning the more innovation a business creates; the better off it is in the long-run. However, not all innovations are created equal. We contribute to the literature by investigating how institutional investors change future innovation, not in quantity, but diversity. Using several unique measures of technological diversification created from firm-level patent data, we show that institutional investors increase the focus on a firm’s future innovation. Our results are robust to the classification scheme. Ultimately, our results indicate institutional investors create value by encouraging firms to build on prior knowledge.

Ingmar, Linnea. "Modelling Diversity of Solutions". Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för informationsteknologi, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-400391.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
For many combinatorial problems, finding a single solution is not enough. This is clearly the case for multi-objective optimisation problems, as they have no single “best solution” and, thus, it is useful to find a representation of the non-dominated solutions (the Pareto frontier). However, it also applies to single objective optimisation problems, where one may be interested in finding several (close to) optimal solutions that illustrate some form of diversity. The same applies to satisfaction problems. This is because models usually idealise the problem in some way, and a diverse pool of solutions may provide a better choice with respect to considerations that are omitted or simplified in the model. This thesis describes a general framework for finding k diverse solutions to a combinatorial problem (be it satisfaction, single-objective or multi-objective), various approaches to solve problems in the framework, their implementations, and an experimental evaluation of their practicality.
