Abstract (sommario):
Objective: To review the current research and importance of glutathione (GSH) therapy in health and disease and to provide a basic overview of the widespread use and interest in this compound. Data Identification: Articles were obtained via a MEDLINE search of the term glutathione in conjunction with specific disease states mentioned, and via extensive review of references found in articles identified by computer search. Study Selection: Emphasis was placed on the most recent research, human research, and in discussing multiple disease states. Data Extraction: The literature was reviewed for methodology, quality, and practical aspects of interest to clinical pharmacists. Data Synthesis: GSH is a tripeptide of extreme importance as a catalyst, reductant, and reactant. It continues to be investigated in diverse areas such as acute respiratory distress syndrome, toxicology, AIDS, aging, oncology, and liver disease. Despite the widespread clinical interest in GSH, we were not able to identify an in-depth review of this compound in the pharmacy literature. Conclusions: The list of potential indications for modulation of GSH is extensive and broad. This review introduces clinicians to what GSH is, its basic chemistry, and some areas of active research.

Abstract (sommario):
In the less developed nations, hygiene and sanitation remain overriding factors in population health and the burden of waterborne disease. Both morbidity and mortality from diseases, such as cholera, remain high, but the overwhelming burden of diarrhoeal diseases inevitably goes undiagnosed. Enterotoxic E. coli, shigellosis and campylobacteriosis are prevalent amongst bacterial diseases and giardiasis is often diagnosed among protozoan diseases. In terms of viral diseases, hepatitis A is frequently associated with water and rotavirus, and more recently norovirus, infections are suspected to be major causes of gastroenteritis, although they are seldom diagnosed. From the perspective of research and training, and despite the efforts of major international organizations, effective programs that teach basic hygiene and sanitation remain elusive.

Abstract (sommario):
Health scales or indices are composite tools aiming to measure a variety of clinical conditions, behaviors, attitudes and beliefs that are difficult to be measured quantitatively. During the past years, these tools have been extensively used in cardiovascular disease prevention. The already proposed scales have shown good ability in assessing individual characteristics, but had moderate predictive ability in relation to the development of chronic diseases and various other health outcomes. In this review, methodological issues for the development of health scales are discussed. Specifically, the selection of the appropriate number of components, the selection of classes for each component, the use of weights of scale components and the role of intra- or inter-correlation between components are discussed. Based on the current literature the use of components with large number of classes, as well as the use of specific weights for each scale component and the low-to-moderate inter-correlation rate between the components, is suggested in order to increase the diagnostic accuracy of the tool.

Abstract (sommario):
As you probably know, to board the B777-300ERi in Geneva for Anchorage via London, is not just that simple. With your ticket you bought several days before, you come to the airport, check in, pay airport's fees, go through the customs and security checks, walk in the terminal following signs, maybe you stop in the duty free shops, and finally find your gate. By this time, you are ready to board, about one hour after you enter the airport.
We will be essentially interested in air law that is why, the purpose of this master's thesis is to consider the legal aspect of facilitation in civil aviation. The term facilitation refers to the process that passengers, crew, luggage, cargo and mail have to go through when they cross borders to fly from a point A to a point B.
Recently, an aspect of facilitation took an outstanding importance: health issues. At the end of last year, the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak was a real threat to international civil aviation because passengers (and crews) could have been exposed to an infected person inside the terminal or on board the plane, also, aircrafts were considered a fast vector of this disease through the world. The economic consequences for airlines and airports were very painful.

Abstract (sommario):
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) was first recognized in Guangdong Province, China, in November 2002. Subsequent to its introduction to Hong Kong in mid-February 2003, the virus spread to more than 30 countries infecting over 8,000 individuals across five continents. Toronto was particularly affected and SARS's outbreak there resulted in the emergence of five ethical issues in the following areas: isolation and quarantine, privacy and personal information, professional duty of care, collateral damage and the WHO's SARS-related Travel Advisory for Toronto. In what follows each of these issues will be explored in depth.

Abstract (sommario):

Reviewing the current health care system in India which is grossly inadequate and inefficient, inaccessible and inequitable, this dissertation discusses the relevance of the principles of social justice such as equity, the common good and distributive justice, and the imperatives of social justice such as the option for the poor, subsidiarity, participation and solidarity and argues that a health care system informed and guided by these principles will be more effective, equitable and accessible to people. In addition to examining the numerous challenges faced by the primary health care system in the country, I also examine the many ethical challenges raised by the development of gene therapies in the country and suggest that the same principles of social justice offer guidelines to frame policies regarding the practice of them. This dissertation faces of the very complex health care situation in India. About 40% of people in the country have little or no access to basic health care because of poverty, abysmally low spending on health care by the government, neglect of basic health care facilities, and lack of social security measures like health insurance. However, the government in its effort to boost the country's GDP is making an all-out effort to promote health tourism in the country by investing in super specialty hospitals and in high-end medicines like gene therapy. The government also has been promoting and encouraging private investments in the sector, especially in setting up super-specialty hospitals and in the use of high-end medicines such as gene therapy. In an effort to boost health tourism and to earn greater foreign exchange, the government has drafted its industrial policies for the last three decades, encouraging private, for-profit health care sector. Substantial tax deductions and subsidies are provided to the private sector to allure private investment in the sector. However, in the process, the government has neglected primary health care centers that have been the primary source of health care for the poor and the underprivileged sections of people. In spite of announcing new policies in health care with high promises of programs and initiatives for the poor, women and children, the resource allocation to the sector betrays all promises. The administrative, structural, political and social anomalies, especially corruption at all levels, absenteeism among health care personnel, medical malpractices, a lack of political will, vision and transparency, poor allocation of funds, lack of monitoring and evaluation systems, etc., have crippled the health care system. It is in this context that I argue that the principles of social justice and its imperatives should inform and direct the government in its effort to provide health care in the country. These principles and imperatives should inform and direct not only provisions for basic health care but also the production and use of genetic medicines. A health care system that is based on equity, the common good, distributive justice, subsidiarity, solidarity and participation, that promotes health and meets the health care needs of all in an equitable way, irrespective of the socio-economic disparities that prevails, is the need of the hour in India

SAVIO, L. DEL. "PRIVATE CHOICES, PUBLIC ISSUES. THE ETHICS OF HEALTH POLICY IN THE FACE OF DIET RELATED DISEASES". Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2434/234130.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The epidemic of diet related disease is a fundamental fact of epidemiology that our societies are increasingly facing. It calls for policy responses and amendments of our systems of health care. These actions and reforms intersect several loci of moral and political disagreement in the public sphere: the acceptability of public paternalism, the appropriate consideration of personal responsibility in health care and the moral and political significance of social health inequalities. I offer a treatment of these three broad normative issues in order to inform discussions about appropriate responses to diet related diseases. (1) I argue that antipaternalism is overstated if not understood in welfarist terms: within the latter framework, evidence for poor capability in dietary choices is a sound reason for intervention. (2) I distinguish distributive and efficiency concerns regarding personal responsibility for health, arguing that there is no defensible conception of the former. (3) I dismiss efforts to understand the moral importance of social health inequalities in terms of health entitlements and reject investment-like approaches to inequalities framed in terms of “equality of opportunity”: the fight against health inequalities is vivified by a renewed interest in the social goods attached to robust socio-economic egalitarianism. Together, these three theses lead away from policies focused on individuals, their responsibility and their productive importance for society and support both public health interventions on the environment where people live and continuous defense of traditional unconditional health care provision.

Abstract (sommario):
There are many reasons for studying the ways in which visual function changes with disease. One very general reason is to help understand how the visual system works. More specifically, by testing diseased eyes it may be possible to evaluate the generality of conclusions derived from studies of healthy eyes. This type of evaluation may help reveal implicit assumptions that underlie studies of normally functioning visual systems, which typically are investigated using small-sample designs.

In the critical period of the new coronary disease, prevention and control, the problems of how to resist the disease, prevent and control the spread of the new coronary disease infection and ensure the health of more than 40 million college students who are confined at home have attracted the attention of education authorities at all levels. In the post-epidemic era, college health education network teaching should be paid more attention to and further improved and promoted. The key work should focus on teaching content arrangement, teaching team formation, teaching form selection and teaching effect evaluation. Especially after the epidemic, we must do a good job in establishing rules and regulations, updating ideas, tapping potential, cultural construction and other aspects.

Abstract (sommario):
Pulmonary Disease has become a hot topic since Covid-19 attacked in 2019. Back to Tang Dynasty, Pulmonary Diseases were common in literati field. Poets used characteristics of the “lungs” that manage the energy and store spirit to reveal their true feelings. On the other hand, the lungs are “delicate” and “the only inner organ that is connecting to the outside by the nostril”, which gets infected by the virus the easiest. It reflected literati’s ups and downs in their careers, so as to express their sorrows and painful sentiments. Therefore, Pulmonary Diseases has become a “literati disease” to convey poets’ original emotions and expressed their unfinished achievements. Pulmonary Disease was one of the diseases that Bai Juyi was suffered for. During expatriation to Jiangzhou, pulmonary disease became the illness root due to the unfavorable climate and the invasion of cold pathogens. Later, traveling to Suzhou and Hangzhou also aggravated the disease. For Bai Juyi, Pulmonary Disease is not only a state of life, also a writing object that expressed specific emotions. Through the symptoms of “cough” and “thirst” from pulmonary disease, he revealed the hunger and cold disorders, also the deprivation of life when he was banished from the court. Also, he presented calm and adapting manner when he was suffering for the disease, which shaped his writing features with full of self-disposition. These features were transformed from the energy and store spirit in lungs. Furthermore, Bai Juyi showed his relaxing manner and leisure mind even he had the “thirst” of “desire of alcohol” which healed the mental emotions but hurt the physical lungs. Bai Juyi was entangled with pulmonary disease for half of his life, but he lived until seventy-five years old. To show the world about his living style of “walking with the illness” and “prolonging life with the disease”, his writings exuded peaceful and elegant with spontaneity.

Jegede, Ayodele, Abu Conteh, Khoudia Sow, Mariam Boyon, Catherin Grant, Megan Schmidt-Sane e Melissa Leach. SSHAP West Africa Hub: Health Emergency Cycles and Social Context in West Africa. Institute of Development Studies, luglio 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/sshap.2024.023.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The SSHAP West Africa Hub brings together academics, humanitarian responders and public health practitioners primarily working in Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone to explore socio-political and historical issues shaping crises, with the intention of enhancing national and humanitarian programmes seeking to reach vulnerable groups. In this landscape paper, we aim to summarise the contextual factors that shape health emergencies and responses to health emergencies in the West Africa region (termed ‘health emergency cycles’). Drawing on examples from Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone, we explore the interrelationship of disease outbreaks with socio-cultural, economic and political contexts, and we address issues of response governance and local capacity within national health systems. We demonstrate how different emergencies are interconnected and related to long-term stressors in the region, arguing for a less siloed approach to response. Whilst we recognise the vast heterogeneity in the region, we draw on thematic commonalities that speak to wider regional issues. We conclude with some social science priorities for responding to crises.

Kelly, Luke. Characteristics of Global Health Diplomacy. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), giugno 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.09.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This rapid review focuses on Global Health Diplomacy and defines it as a method of interaction between the different stakeholders of the public health sector in a bid to promote representation, cooperation, promotion of the right to health and improvement of health systems for vulnerable populations on a global scale. It is the link between health and international relations. GHD has various actors including states, intergovernmental organizations, private companies, public-private partnerships and non-governmental organizations. Foreign policies can be integrated into national health in various ways i.e., designing institutions to govern practices regarding health diplomacy (i.e., health and foreign affairs ministries), creating and promoting norms and ideas that support foreign policy integration and promoting policies that deal with specific issues affecting the different actors in the GHD arena to encourage states to integrate them into their national health strategies. GHD is classified into core diplomacy – where there are bilateral and multilateral negotiations which may lead to binding agreements, multistakeholder diplomacy – where there are multilateral and bilateral negotiations which do not lead to binding agreements and informal diplomacy – which are interactions between other actors in the public health sector i.e., NGOs and Intergovernmental Organizations. The US National Security Strategy of 2010 highlighted the matters to be considered while drafting a health strategy as: the prevalence of the disease, the potential of the state to treat the disease and the value of affected areas. The UK Government Strategy found the drivers of health strategies to be self-interest (protecting security and economic interests of the state), enhancing the UK’s reputation, and focusing on global health to help others. The report views health diplomacy as a field which requires expertise from different disciplines, especially in the field of foreign policy and public health. The lack of diplomatic expertise and health expertise have been cited as barriers to integrating health into foreign policies. States and other actors should collaborate to promote the right to health globally.

Giuffrida, Antonio, Roberto F. Iunes e William D. Savedoff. Economic and Health Effects of Occupational Hazards in Latin America and the Caribbean. Inter-American Development Bank, maggio 2001. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0008920.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study describes the health dimension and some economic aspects of occupational safety in Latin America and the Caribbean. The study is the result of a joint effort by the IDB's Region 3 and Sustainable Development Departments which was undertaken to identify the major trends and issues related to improving occupational safety in Latin America and the Caribbean. It shows that the region has a very high disease burden in this area, and that economic patterns of employment and public regulatory responses make these health problems more acute than in Europe or North America. The paper was discussed at an IDB conference entitled "International Conference on Occupational Safety and Health" in June 2000, and served to draw attention to these important issues. The study provides a firm grounding from which to address the dearth of policies in occupational safety, and it will help guide future IDB activities in this sector. It represents one modest step along the way to a future of safer working conditions and better health in the region.

Thanda Kyaw, Ai. Socio-Economic Impacts of Foot and Mouth Disease Among Cattle Farmers in Sagaing and Mandalay Areas, Myanmar. O.I.E (World Organisation for Animal Health), maggio 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.20506/standz.2784.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Sub-Regional Representation for South East Asia (OIE SRR-SEA) implemented the Stop Transboundary Animal Diseases and Zoonoses (STANDZ) Programme funded by AusAID to strengthen the veterinary services and effectively manage the control and eradication of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in Cambodia, Lao PDR and Myanmar. The purpose of the study is to understand how FMD outbreaks impact smallholder farmers, both men and women, at the household and village level and how control and eradication of FMD would benefit them. Specific aims are to estimate the direct and indirect socio-economic costs associated with the outbreaks of FMD as well as of the measures taken by farmers to deal with such outbreaks and to identify issues that contributed to the socio-economic impacts of FMD outbreaks and opportunities to reduce them.

Abstract (sommario):
Little is known about the health profile of tertiary students within Aotearoa, New Zealand (NZ), and this paper is the first to explore the health profile of Niue tertiary students within NZ. Part 1 comprises a scoping review which found that obesity, alcohol, smoking, mental health, sexual health, and drug use are the major key health issues for ethnic minority students. Part 2 presents the results of an online survey of Niue tertiary students across all major tertiary institutions within NZ. The survey results showed that most participants were at high risk of cardiovascular disease and had a moderate level of oral, vision, and hearing health. Some participants experienced domestic violence, psychological distress, and barriers to accessing health services, especially during COVID-19 lockdowns. These findings provide insights into tertiary students’ health profiles and offer suggestions for future studies.

Rahman, Kazi, Grace Lee, Kristina Vine, Amba-Rose Atkinson, Michael Tong e Veronica Matthews. Impacts of climate change on health and health services in northern New South Wales: an Evidence Check rapid review. The Sax Institute, dicembre 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.57022/xlsj7564.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This rapid review investigated the effects of climate change on health and health services in northern NSW—a known ‘hotspot’ for natural disasters—over the next 10-20 years. It included 92 peer-reviewed articles and 9 grey literature documents, with 17% focused on Northern NSW. Climate change will cause both an increase in average temperatures and in extreme weather events and natural disasters. Impacts particularly affecting Northern NSW are expected to include increases and exacerbations of: mental illness; infectious diseases, including those transmitted by mosquitoes, water and food; heat-related illnesses; chronic diseases including respiratory and cardiac conditions; injuries; and mortality—with vulnerable groups being most affected. Demand for health services will increase, but there will also be disruptions to medication supply and service availability. A whole-of-system approach will be needed to address these issues. There are numerous gaps in the research evidence and a lack of predictive modelling and robust locally relevant data.

Vantassel, Stephen M., e Mark A. Klng. Wildlife Carcass Disposal. U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, luglio 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2018.7207733.ws.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Many wildlife management situations require the disposal of animal carcasses. These can include the lethal removal of wildlife to resolve damage or conflicts, as well as clean-up after mortalities caused by vehicle collisions, disease, oil spills or other natural disasters. Carcasses must be disposed of properly to protect public sensitivities, the environment, and public health. Improper disposal of carcasses can result in public outrage, site contamination, injury to animals and people, and the attraction of other animals that may lead to wildlife damage issues. Concern over ground water contamination and disease transmission from improper carcass disposal has resulted in increased regulation. Successful carcass disposal programs are cost-effective, environmentally sound, and protective of public health. In addition, disposal practices must demonstrate sensitivity to public perception while adhering to state and local guidelines. This publication discusses the range of options available for the responsible disposal of animal carcasses.

Mengak, Michael T. Wildlife Translocation. U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, luglio 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2018.7210105.ws.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Many people enjoy wildlife. Nationwide, Americans spend over $144 billion annually on fishing, hunting, and wildlife-watching activities. However, wildlife is not always welcome in or near homes, buildings, or other property and can cause significant damage or health and safety issues. Many people who experience a wildlife conflict prefer to resolve the issue without harming the offending animal. Of the many options available (i.e., habitat modification, exclusion, repellents) for addressing nuisance wildlife problems, translocation—capturing and moving—of the offending animal is often perceived to be effective. However, trapping and translocating wild animals is rarely legal nor is it considered a viable solution by wildlife professionals for resolving most nuisance wildlife problems. Reasons to avoid translocating nuisance wildlife include legal restrictions, disease concerns, liability issues associated with injuries or damage caused by a translocated animal, stress to the animal, homing behavior, and risk of death to the animal. Translocation is appropriate in some situations such as re-establishing endangered species, enhancing genetic diversity, and stocking species in formerly occupied habitats. The main focus of this publication, however, is to address nuisance wildlife issues that may be commonly encountered by homeowners and nuisance wildlife control professionals.
