Abstract (sommario):
The paper is devoted to the analysis of advertising discourse as one of the institutional types from the linguopragmatics perspective. In this aspect, the main features of advertising discourse are presented, the features of advertising text are characterized, specific features of advertising communication are outlined and strategies for influencing the recipient are systematized in the present article. The aim of this study is the analysis of advertising discourse as one of the institutional types from the linguopragmatics perspective. The research results made it possible to conclude that advertising discourse belongs to the institutional type as a communicative-pragmatic model of speech behaviour of advertising participants, which is realized through advertising texts in a combination of verbal and non-verbal elements. The basic features of advertising discourse as a specific component of the institutional discourse are presented as following: anthropocentricity, pragmatic orientation, cliché, autonomy and comprehensibility to a wide range of recipients, consumer targeting and mass media affiliation. The peculiarities of the advertising text are defined as heterogeneous and creolized, with verbal and pictorial and audio components formation of a visual, structural, semantic and functional unit, providing a complex, communicative and pragmatic influence on the addressee. It is suggested to consider advertising texts as functionally organized extralinguing and lingual signs of a message characterized by the specificity of form, content, communicative function and pragmatic intention. The features of the advertising text are highlighted as minimization or compactness, additionality, signalling, hierarchy, evaluation and instructiveness. The article outlines the specific features of advertising communication as a process of disseminating advertising information to quantitatively large and various audiences that consumes goods and services through the mass media. A feature of advertising communication is its preparedness and unidirectionality with absent or delayed feedback. The author has proved that the specificity of advertising communication is informing the consumer about the products and services and influencing him by various means. The information, argumentation, suggestion and manipulation strategies with which advertising discourse influences the consumer’s consciousness are analyzed in the present article.

Abstract (sommario):
The research deals with the study of the English language economic discourse and its basic characteristics. The object of the article is discourse in general and the main approaches to its interpretation. The subject of the investigation is the English economic discourse as one of its institutional types. The aim of the research is to highlight the main linguistic characteristics of the English economic discourse. Economic discourse is defined as a type of discourse, in which the process of speech production based on certain economic ideas. Each of the texts of discourse creates a special field of discussion in relation to economy, and the texts within this discourse are aimed at the communication between the experts in the field which determines the institutionality of the communication. Thus, economic discourse is a complex communicative phenomenon implemented in the speech practice of subjects of economic activity. The characteristic features of the economic discourse are strict visual design, minimum usage of tropes and figures of speech, the use of persuasive devices, neologisms, idioms and numerous abbreviations used with the aim of compressing the transmitted knowledge. Neologisms, idioms and abbreviations that function in English economic discourse present special difficulties for translators. Therefore the perspective of the further research is seen in the study of translation techniques in reproducing various lexical, grammatical and syntactical features of the English economic discourse into the Ukrainian language.

Derczynski, Leon. "Determining the types of temporal relations in discourse". Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2013. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/4068/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The ability to describe the order of events is crucial for effective communication. It is used to describe causality, to plan and to relay stories. Event ordering can be thought of in terms of binary temporal relations which hold between event pairs or pairs of times and events. Complex event structures can be modelled as compositions of these pairs. Temporal relations can be expressed linguistically in a variety of ways. For example, one may use tense to describe the relation between the time of speaking and other events, or use a temporal conjunction to temporal situate an event relative to time. In the area of automatic temporal information extraction, determining the type of temporal relation between a given pair of times or events is currently the hardest task. Very sophisticated approaches have yielded only small improvements over initial attempts. Rather than develop a generic approach to event ordering through relation typing, a failure analysis informs grouping and segmentation of these temporal relations according to the type of information that can be used to temporally relate them. Two major sources of information are identified that provide typing information for two segments: relations explicitly described by a signal word, and relations involving a shift of tense and aspect. Following this, we investigate automatic temporal relation typing in both these segments, presenting results, introducing new methods and a generating set of new language resources.

In this research study, we have attempted to carry out the analysis of a series of linguistic texts which can be regarded as being typical representatives of the argumentative and evaluative discourse types characteristically found in the mass media. In a broad sense, the present study aims to examine the operation of the evaluative and the argumentative component in two text classes: newspaper editorials and art reviews. In order to achieve this objective, six editorials and six reviews (four film and two play reviews), selected from different on-line newspapers and art specialist websites, were analysed along the lines dictated by the descriptive models chosen for the study. In a narrow sense, it attempts to examine whether argumentation is at the service of evaluation or viceversa, as well as any possible interdependence between them.

Stolk, Keilani. "Types of Questions that Comprise a Teacher's Questioning Discourse in a Conceptually-Oriented Classroom". BYU ScholarsArchive, 2013. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3716.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study examines teacher questioning with the purpose of identifying what types of mathematical questions are being modeled by the teacher. Teacher questioning is important because it is the major source of mathematical questioning discourse from which students can learn and copy. Teacher mathematical questioning discourse in a conceptually-oriented classroom is important to study because it is helpful to promote student understanding and may be useful for students to adopt in their own mathematical questioning discourse. This study focuses on the types of questions that comprise the mathematical questioning discourse of a university teacher in a conceptually-oriented mathematics classroom for preservice elementary teachers. I present a categorization of the types of questions, an explanation of the different categories and subcategories of questions, and an analysis and count of the teacher's use of the questions. This list of question types can be used (1) by conceptually-oriented teachers to explicitly teach the important mathematical questions students should be asking during mathematical activity, (2) by teachers who wish to change their instruction to be more conceptually-oriented, and (3) by researchers to understand and improve teachers' and students' mathematical questioning.

Prokofyeva, Tatiana. "Language Use in Two Types of Suicide Texts". Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Avdelningen för språk och kultur, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-102099.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Suicide texts are the traces left by their authors for the public allowing them to understand the causes of the desire to commit suicide, regardless of whether such notes preceded successful suicide attempts or not. The types of such texts can vary dramatically in emotional expressiveness, be it a suicide note handwritten by the author or a short post typed on a web forum dedicated to suicides. While one text can be evidence of a successful suicide attempt, the other may point to a deeply depressive state which may or may not lead to a suicide attempt in future. The main questions this study aims to answer are: (1) what is the difference between the two above-named types of suicide texts (‘suicide notes’ and ‘suicide posts’) and (2) how is it expressed linguistically? Previous works on suicide texts have been of significant importance and have managed to investigate the differences between suicide notes of the attempters and those who completed suicide (Joiner 2002) as well as underline the typical features of genuine suicide notes in comparison to fabricated suicide notes. However, no studies indicating the differences between the ‘suicide notes’ of successful suicides and the ‘suicide posts’ of authors exhibiting various degrees of depressive behavior have previously been conducted. In this thesis, the comparative analysis of ‘suicide notes’ left by those successful in their attempts  and ‘suicide posts’ composed by authors with unknown fates has been carried out with the help of discourse analysis. Both types of texts have been examined from such linguistic levels as semantics, pragmatics and syntax. The results show several distinctive features peculiar to each type. While providing a clear reason for committing suicide in the one case contrasts with detailing a number of causes for depression in the other, further differences exist in regard to expressing such emotions as (1) fear of life, (2) relief, (3) lack of hope and (4) lack of doubt versus displaying such emotions as (1) fear of death, (2) preserved desire and (3) doubt. An easy to follow structure and purposeful past tense usage in suicide notes stands in contrast to the allusions to previous suicide attempts and indistinguishable pattern found in suicide posts. At the same time, specific punctuation signs were found to be peculiar mainly to the suicide post type of text.  The results of the research also demonstrate the necessity for further investigation of the characteristic features of different types of suicide text as well as their classification. Moreover, the study indicates the possibilities of tracing the probable transformation from ‘suicide posts’ to ‘suicide notes’ which may well serve for purposes of suicide prevention, especially if an additional category, i.e., notes written by survivors, is added to the analysis.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The present research investigates the use of different question prompts and the discourse they generate in the SLE:OI, an ACTFL-variant second language oral proficiency interview test. One hundred and fifty-two question prompts used to elicit the test task of 'supporting an opinion,' were transcribed from 27 SLE:OI tests administered between July and November, 2000. From this, 30 categories of question prompts were identified by 6 SLE:OI raters acting as judges. Independently, the researcher and the judges determined task difficulty/complexity to be the predominant feature differentiating the categories. Using the 30 categories as a basis, the Question Prompt Complexity Questionnaire was produced and administered to the 6 judges. Analysis of the questionnaire data indicated a clear consensus for 3 categories into 'easy' and 'difficult' groups. Subsequently, candidate responses to 11 question prompts from the easy group, and 10 from the difficult group were transcribed, and discourse analyses were carried out to ascertain response levels of L2 fluency (by type-token ratio; frequency of silent and filled pauses, repetitions, and self-repairs), accuracy (by verb morphology and lexical use), and complexity (by clause subordination). The results demonstrated that those candidates tested with 'easy' and 'difficult' question prompts showed strong, significant differences in two aspects of their response fluency, but no significant differences in the accuracy or complexity of their responses. Based on these findings, several recommendations and implications for rater training were cited.

Abstract (sommario):
In recent years, nontraditional workforce training programs have proliferated inside and outside of traditional postsecondary institutions. A subset of these programs, bootcamps, advertise high job placement rates and have been hailed by policymakers as key to training skilled workers. However, few formal data exist on the number, types, prices, location, or other descriptive details of program offerings. We fill this void by studying the universe of bootcamp programs offered as of June 30, 2017. In this report, we discuss the attributes of the 1,010 technology-related programs offered in the United States, Canada, and online. We find more diversity among bootcamp providers and programs than would be expected from public discourse. This primarily relates to the mode of delivery (online vs. in person), intensity (part time/full time), cost, and program types. Based on the data we collected, we present a classification structure for bootcamps focused on five distinct program types.

Abstract (sommario):
We argue that in order to achieve climate justice, recognition needs to be given more attention in climate research, discourse, and policies. Through the analysis of three examples, we identify formal and discursive recognition as central types of recognition in climate issues, and we show how powerful actors exercise their power in ways that cause climate injustice through formal and discursive misrecognition of poor and vulnerable groups. The three examples discussed are climate mitigation through forest conservation (REDD), the Great Green Wall project in Sahel, and the narrative about climate change as a contributing factor to the Syrian war.

Romova, Zina, e Martin Andrew. Embedding Learning for Future and Imagined Communities in Portfolio Assessment. Unitec ePress, settembre 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.34074/rsrp.42015.

Abstract (sommario):
In tertiary contexts where adults study writing for future academic purposes, teaching and learning via portfolio provides them with multiple opportunities to create and recreate texts characteristic of their future and imagined discourse communities. This paper discusses the value of portfolios as vehicles for rehearsing membership of what Benedict Anderson (1983) called “imagined communities”, a concept applied by such scholars as Yasuko Kanno and Bonny Norton (2003). Portfolios can achieve this process of apprenticeship to a specialist discourse through reproducing texts similar to the authentic artefacts of those discourse communities (Flowerdew, 2000; Hyland, 2003, 2004). We consider the value of multi-drafting, where learners reflect on the learning of a text type characteristic of the students’ future imagined community. We explore Hamp-Lyons and Condon’s belief (2000) that portfolios “critically engage students and teachers in continual discussion, analysis and evaluation of their processes and progress as writers, as reflected in multiple written products” (p.15). Introduced by a discussion of how theoretical perspectives on learning and assessing writing engage with portfolio production, the study presented here outlines a situated pedagogical approach, where students report on their improvement across three portfolio drafts and assess their learning reflectively. A multicultural group of 41 learners enrolled in the degree-level course Academic Writing [AW] at a tertiary institution in New Zealand took part in a study reflecting on this approach to building awareness of one’s own writing. Focus group interviews with a researcher at the final stage of the programme provided qualitative data, which was transcribed and analysed using textual analysis methods (Ryan and Bernard, 2003). Students identified a range of advantages of teaching and learning AW by portfolio. One of the identified benefits was that the selected text types within the programme were perceived as useful to the students’ immediate futures. This careful choice of target genre was reflected in the overall value of the programme for these learners.

Abstract (sommario):
An article describes intertextuality as a lexico-semantic tool of linguistic suggestion and examines its ability to constitute manipulative power of authority within political media discourse. Following a thorough study of linguopragmatics and suggestive linguistics from the perspective of their theoretical grounds, we aimed to classify lexico-semantic tools, which could enable an authority to become a manipulative power of political media texts. Intertextuality caught our attention as an element of the aforementioned classification. The phenomenon representing overlap and interaction of several texts is backed up by recent examples gathered from some Russian and foreign Internet periodicals. Being sub-types of intertextuality Allusion and Quotation were highlighted in the research.

Revill, James, Alisha Anand e Giacomo Persi Paoli. Exploring Science and Technology Review Mechanisms Under the Biological Weapons Convention. The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research, giugno 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.37559/sectec/2021/sandtreviews/01.

Abstract (sommario):
Since the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) opened for signature in 1972, biology and other converging disciplines have advanced considerably. These changes could have profound implications for a science-based disarmament agreement like the BWC. To address changes in biology and biotechnology, BWC States Parties have established processes to review developments in science and technology (S&T), including annual expert meetings on this topic. However, shortcomings are evident in the current approaches and many BWC States Parties have expressed support for a more systematic review of science and technology under the Convention. This study seeks to inform discussions on establishing a dedicated and systematic S&T review process under the BWC through an examination of existing S&T review-type mechanisms employed in different regimes beyond the BWC, a survey of States Parties views on a possible review mechanism and a study of past and present discourse on this issue in the BWC. Based on the analysis conducted, this study also presents options for BWC States Parties to consider ahead of the Ninth BWC Review Conference.

Orning, Tanja. Professional identities in progress – developing personal artistic trajectories. Norges Musikkhøgskole, agosto 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.22501/nmh-ar.544616.

Abstract (sommario):
We have seen drastic changes in the music profession during the last 20 years, and consequently an increase of new professional opportunities, roles and identities. We can see elements of a collective identity in classically trained musicians who from childhood have been introduced to centuries old, institutionalized traditions around the performers’ role and the work-concept. Respect for the composer and his work can lead to a fear of failure and a perfectionist value system that permeates the classical music. We have to question whether music education has become a ready-made prototype of certain trajectories, with a predictable outcome represented by more or less generic types of musicians who interchangeably are able play the same, limited canonized repertoire, in more or less the same way. Where is the resistance and obstacles, the detours and the unique and fearless individual choices? It is a paradox that within the traditional master-student model, the student is told how to think, play and relate to established truths, while a sustainable musical career is based upon questioning the very same things. A fundamental principle of an independent musical career is to develop a capacity for critical reflection and a healthy opposition towards uncontested truths. However, the unison demands for modernization of institutions and their role cannot be solved with a quick fix, we must look at who we are and who we have been to look at who we can become. Central here is the question of how the music students perceive their own identity and role. To make the leap from a traditional instrumentalist role to an artist /curator role requires commitment in an entirely different way. In this article, I will examine question of identity - how identity may be constituted through musical and educational experiences. The article will discuss why identity work is a key area in the development of a sustainable music career and it will investigate how we can approach this and suggest some possible ways in this work. We shall see how identity work can be about unfolding possible future selves (Marcus & Nurius, 1986), develop and evolve one’s own personal journey and narrative. Central is how identity develops linguistically by seeing other possibilities: "identity is formed out of the discourses - in the broadest sense - that are available to us ..." (Ruud, 2013). The question is: How can higher music education (HME) facilitate students in their identity work in the process of constructing their professional identities? I draw on my own experience as a classically educated musician in the discussion.

Obiakor, Thelma, e Kirsty Newman. Education and Employability: The Critical Role of Foundational Skills. Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE), novembre 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.35489/bsg-rise-ri_2022/048.

Abstract (sommario):
A great deal of policy attention is paid to the role that education plays in driving employment outcomes. Most of this attention has focused on post-primary education— particularly Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). This paper sets out the less-discussed role that foundational skills, typically built through basic primary education, play in driving employability; how foundational skills affect TVET provision; and what implications this body of evidence has for education policy. We acknowledge the need to consider how education systems build skills which will contribute to countries’ economic aspirations. However, we suggest that the dominant discourse which focuses specifically on TVET and how it can be linked to employer demands is unlikely to be successful for several reasons. Firstly, we show that foundational skills are themselves associated with economic gains for individuals and societies. This, together with the evidence showing extremely low levels of foundational skills in many countries, suggests that focusing on improving foundational skills may be a more cost-effective approach to driving employability than has been previously acknowledged. Furthermore, we show that TVET (and other later forms of education) may struggle to add value where foundational skills are not in place. Focusing large amounts of energy and resources on reforming TVET may not achieve hoped-for impacts if TVET entrants don’t have the necessary foundations to learn. We discuss the popular policy prescription of linking TVET provision to employer needs. As well as noting our concern that this focus fails to acknowledge the binding constraint of low foundational skills, we also set out why employer demand for skills may not be a good indication of actual future skills needs. We therefore suggest a more nuanced discussion on skills for employability which acknowledges economic development goals; the skills that will be needed to achieve them; and, crucially, a country’s starting point. We end the paper by highlighting the fact that unemployment and underemployment are generally caused by a lack of jobs, not a lack of skills. We therefore urge policymakers to be realistic about the extent to which any education policy—whether focusing on foundations, technical, and vocation skills or any other type of skills—can affect employment outcomes. Considering the evidence presented in this paper, we suggest that policymakers in many low- and lower-middle income countries may want to consider a stronger focus on foundational skills. The major reason for focusing on foundational skills is that a quality education is a fundamental right for all children which will allow them to experience lifelong learning. This paper sets out that foundational skills will also be the first step towards achieving a more employable workforce—but also that policymakers should consider the full range of policies that need to be in place to deliver productive employment and economic growth.
