Abstract (sommario):
Despite intensified and concerted efforts to realise sustainable development. Western industrialised countries have in recent years experienced several mass protests against institutions perceived variously to have the potential to govern the global economy in environmentally sustainable or unsustainable ways. This thesis examines how different actors in the news media attempt to legitimate and de-legitimate neoliberal approaches to economic governance on grounds that these approaches are or are not environmentally sustainable. By using a critical discourse analysis perspective to analyse texts produced by actors with competing political commitments (neo-liberal and left-liberal), it discusses how primarily profit-driven generic conventions can govern what can and cannot be said in debates on sustainability. The thesis suggests that the effectiveness of (cultural) politics aimed at legitimating and de-legitimating neo-liberal approaches can be understood in teens of the relationship between an instrumental rationality geared at maximising the effectiveness of existing institutional systems and a communicative rationality geared at achieving understanding.

Seidlhofer, Barbara. "Discourse analysis for summarization". Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1991. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10018780/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Summarization is an activity which language students are frequently called upon to perform, often without any explicit guidance. In a wider sense, it might be said that all learning, whether of language or anything else, involves the ability to distinguish what is important from what is not, and to incorporate it into existing schematic knowledge. In this respect, summarization can be seen as central to education in general as well as language education in particular. This thesis is an attempt to gain insights into the essential criteria for summarization. After the first chapter has outlined the scope and methodology of the enquiry, chapters 2 to 5 review a number of models of text analysis and discourse processing which, on the face of it, promise to provide a systematic basis for the identification of "main ideas" in written texts. It reviews a number of models of text analysis and discourse processing which, on the face of it, promise to provide a systematic basis for the identification of "main ideas" in written texts. These include the analysis of thematic structure associated with the work of Halliday and the Prague School, the Macrostructures proposed by van Dijk and Kintsch, and Meyer's studies of rhetorical structure. A critical investigation of these models leads to a consideration of a very different approach which focuses not on the text itself as product but on the reader's reaction to it in the process of interpretation. This emerges from the empirical analysis of student summaries and accounts in chapter 6, and is further discussed in the last chapter. In general, the thesis considers the theoretical validity of these different approaches to text description and their practical utility as points of reference for summarization. It surveys applied work based on them, relates them empirically to the analysis of summaries and accounts elicited from advanced Austrian students of English at university level, and works its way towards a set of principles and procedures which might be made operational in language pedagogy.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis consists of an inquiry into the articulation between language, ideology, and power, which is approached from two different angles. Firstly, it deals with theories of ideology as representation, and secondly, investigates the effect of ideology and power on structures of discursive interaction. Thompson (1984) has argued for the necessity of accounting for the relationship between meaning and power in the study of ideology, a relationship which does not seem to be adequately addressed by theories of representation on the one hand, or by theories of social interaction, on the other. The central objective of this research is then to identify possible areas of interface between the linguistic domains of semantics and pragmatics, and the social domains of background beliefs and institutional interaction, and to investigate how this interface may, in practice, construct and organise ideological meanings in discourse. Through a series of case studies, examples of naturally-occurring discourse are analysed in order to examine specific ways in which meaning works to sustain asymmetrical relations of power, and it is argued that this relationship between meaning and power cannot be fully accounted for without integrating pragmatic theories of language in use into the analysis of social discourse.

Campbell, Isaac. "Discourse Analysis of Sustainable Consumption". Thesis, Karlstad University, Faculty of Social and Life Sciences, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-340.

Abstract (sommario):

In the following C-Level Thesis, the geographically isolated consumer society that has evolved in the developed world is examined through discourse analysis. This research frames the issue of material consumption in a historical context and then interrogates the modern task of sustainability. Through review and analysis of current discourse in the sociopolitical field of sustainable consumption, this paper critically analyzes the development of modern consumer culture. The concept of ecological citizenship is presented and inspected as an effective strategy for the realization of sustainability and is viewed as a unifier of the many conflicting discourses on sustainable consumption. The dominant institutional discourse of ecological modernization is presented through a review of UK policy documents, and the opinions as well as alternative solutions touted by critics is noted. This paper finds that ideal of ecological citizenship has not yet been reached, but positive steps have been taken to achieve the goal of sustainability through curbing consumptive habits. In this presentation of sustainable consumption discourse it is important to recognize that there may be no absolute answer or right way to live on this planet, but rather, many ways which can, together, bring about a sustainable society.

Joty, Shafiq Rayhan. "Discourse analysis of asynchronous conversations". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/45674.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
A well-written text is not merely a sequence of independent and isolated sentences, but instead a sequence of structured and related sentences. It addresses a particular topic, often covering multiple subtopics, and is organized in a coherent way that enables the reader to process the information. Discourse analysis seeks to uncover such underlying structures, which can support many applications including text summarization and information extraction. This thesis focuses on building novel computational models of different discourse analysis tasks in asynchronous conversations; i.e., conversations where participants communicate with each other at different times (e.g., emails, blogs). Effective processing of these conversations can be of great strategic value for both organizations and individuals. We propose novel computational models for topic segmentation and labeling, rhetorical parsing and dialog act recognition in asynchronous conversation. Our approaches rely on two related computational methodologies: graph theory and probabilistic graphical models. The topic segmentation and labeling models find the high-level discourse structure; i.e., the global topical structure of an asynchronous conversation. Our graph-based approach extends state-of-the-art methods by integrating a fine-grained conversational structure with other conversational features. On the other hand, the rhetorical parser captures the coherence structure, a finer discourse structure, by identifying coherence relations between the discourse units within each comment of the conversation. Our parser applies an optimal parsing algorithm to probabilities inferred from a discriminative graphical model which allows us to represent the structure and the label of a discourse tree constituent jointly, and to capture the sequential and hierarchical dependencies between the constituents. Finally, the dialog act model allows us to uncover the underlying dialog structure of the conversation. We present unsupervised probabilistic graphical models that capture the sequential dependencies between the acts, and show how these models can be trained more effectively based on the fine-grained conversational structure. Together, these structures provide a deep understanding of an asynchronous conversation that can be exploited in the above-mentioned applications. For each discourse processing task, we evaluate our approach on different datasets, and show that our models consistently outperform the state-of-the-art by a wide margin. Often our results are highly correlated with human annotations.

Abstract (sommario):

This study interprets the public perceptions of feminism and gender equality in Nigeria as reflected in the media. In recent times, the issue of gender equality has been subject to numerous debates in Nigeria. My interest in this issue stems from the increased awareness of feminism and a growing feminist movement in the country. This thesis details the popular opinions on feminism found on Nigerian blogs, online newspaper columns, social media and the likes. The purpose of this research was to (1) analyze feminism as a discourse in the Nigerian society (2) identify the existing gender issues (3) contribute to the growing body of transnational feminism. The findings reveal the dynamic interplay of gender and culture. The main discourses are centered on the relevance/irrelevance of feminism and the advocacy for the girl child rights. These findings have implications for the larger discourse regarding the correlation between culture and gender equality. Furthermore, findings indicate that issues concerning gender inequality is mostly linked with the cultural expectations of the particular society.

Rankoe, Matsheliso Xoliswa. "Exile identity : a discourse analysis". Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/13494.

Abstract (sommario):
Bibliography: leaves 54-58.
This study focuses on the discourses of exile identity and the subjectivity of an individual born in exile. The study also focuses on the methodology used whereby, unlike traditional research where the researcher interviews subjects; in this case the subjects interview the researcher. 6 individuals from different backgrounds, who will be referred to as participants, were chosen, 2 male and 4 females, to interview the subject (1, the researcher). The participants interviewed the subject, exploring her exile identity. The resulting taped discussions were analyzed. A discourse analysis methodology is used to analyze the conversations. Four main discourses are outlined, which have sub-discourses within them. The main discourses are the political, territorial, patriarchy and language. These discourses were identified by their repeated occurrence in the research material. These four discourses appear to be pervasive and are indicative of exile identity as it emerges in the subjectivity of the subject. These discourses can not be generalized to exiles in general. Although discourses were similar across the texts, there were contradictory discourses that emerged. These seem to be as a result of the inter-subjective field, and the differences between the individuals that were conducting the interviews. Due to the fact that it was a different interviewer each time, this created differences, as different issues were highlighted in the stories that were told by the subject, due to a different interaction with the participant.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this degree project is to find out what opportunities discourse analysis offers in teaching EFL reading. It aims at determining what areas of discourse analysis are relevant to teaching EFL reading at Swedish upper-secondary school as well as identifying what language teachers and learners can borrow from the linguistic study of text and discourse and make use of in the language classroom as well as outside it. The degree project is based on secondary research on discourse analysis within the selected works in applied linguistics, language teaching, and social sciences. The sources are reviewed critically and the results are presented. The degree project emphasises the role of discourse analysis in the shift from English being a purely proficiency-oriented subject to being a democracy-oriented subject.

McLean, Stacy Avril. "Negotiating identity in multilingual parliamentary discourses in the Western Cape: a discourse analysis". Thesis, University of the Western Cape, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/4282.

Abstract (sommario):
Magister Artium - MA
South Africa transitioned from an apartheid system of government, with one ruling party to a new democracy; a transition that is still currently in progress. With this transition came many new freedoms, such as the ability to choose and freely express one’s linguistic and cultural preferences, amongst many others. This study analyses the negotiation of identity in constitutionally multilingual parliamentary discourses in the Western Cape in order to create a better understanding of the influence the new South Africa has on the identities constructed in parliamentary discourses whereby polylingualism is used as a linguistic resource. The parliamentary discourse is deemed constitutionally multilingual due to the fact that before 1994, African languages were not considered official, but presently Afrikaans, English and isiXhosa are credited provincial official languages in the Western Cape and are amongst the eleven national official languages. In order to investigate how performative identities are constructed discursively in the relatively new spaces of linguistic democracy, this study conducted a multisemiotic analysis on political manifestos in conjunction with a discourse analysis of a randomly selected Hansard Report of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament, which is the only parliament of the national nine to have an alternate political party in government. In collaboration with consulting the Standing Rules of the House, the National Language Policy Framework, the Western Cape Language Policy and observing the actual sitting, scholarly literature pertaining to language use, multisemiotic features and identity negotiation were evaluated to better understand the discursive spaces in which identity is negotiated as well as to achieve the objectives of this study.

Abstract (sommario):
The objective of this thesis in discourse analysis is a critical and comparative analysis of discourses about breastfeeding in two different ethnolinguistic communities: France and Germany. The original research question is: is the option of breastfeeding a real choice or do women follow the path lined up by authors ? We gathered a corpus composed of institutional booklets and parent's manuals. In our research, we have considered how the authors of these guides and booklets are positioning themselves in their discourses and the arguments put forward to convince women to breastfeed. The study of milk and breastfeeding characterizations in our corpus of French and German texts has allowed us to show that these authors leave little opportunity to choosing breastfeeding, even if this lack of choice is translated in a different way in the two ethnolinguistic communities studied

Abstract (sommario):
Hamas, acronym for Islamic Resistance Movement, is a political movement that was founded in 1987 and has, since 2007, been in charge of the Gaza Strip. The movement was initially characterised by a language accentuated by tropes of political Islam and, after the Oslo Accords, by a strong rejection of the institutions established by the Accords. Consequently, the movement refused to take part in the elections of the Palestinian Authority. The failure of the Accords in the early 2000s led the movement to take a turn, deciding to participate in the elections. Hamas thus underwent a significant political development, that resulted in changes in rhetoric, ideological representations, and self-representation. The present work aims to study the movements ideological development and communication strategies by the means of Discourse Analysis, with the analysis of the corpora of bayānāt, the official statements issued by Hamas and published on their official website.

Marks, Deborah. "Discourse analysis and education case conferences". Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 1993. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.335397.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The psychological investigation of special education provision has traditionally followed one of two dominant approaches. The assessment oriented approach has been concerned with developing improved tools for evaluating educational attainment, such as intelligence testing. The child-centred approach has focussed on discovering educational needs in order to tailor educational provision to suit the specific child. The aim of this study is to challenge some of the assumptions behind both the assessment and the child-centred approaches. It argues that rather than focusing attention purely on the child, it is important to see the educational categories in case conferences as a product of historically produced social and psychological relationships. The first and second sections of the thesis offer a historical review of educational decision-making and a discussion of some of the different approaches to discourse analysis. The third section of the thesis traces the progressive development of the analysis of case conferences using a variety of theoretical frameworks. The first of these frameworks explores action-research. It involves an attempt to generate critical reflection in a case conference. The second framework is a group analytic one. This involves examining the way in which discursive categories such as 'caring', 'needy' and 'inadequate' are employed defensively and projected onto others by participants in the meeting. The third approach examines the way discursive categories employed in the case conferences produce various and changing conceptualizations of the child. The research does not attempt to analyse case conferences in general, but rather, explores some specific processes which have been identified in the meetings. An attempt is made to connect discursive and psychological processes in the group to the activity of doing research. The study does not offer secure guide-lines on 'how to improve case conferences' or on 'how to conduct a discourse analytic study of groups'. Rather, it speculates on some of the ways social groups and research of those groups becomes constituted. The notion that people in case conferences are propelled by purely individual motives, or are simply adopting roles or applying labels (although this may well be the subjective experience of participants) is contested. Rather, participants appear to be governed by a set of latent rules about what may be said, by whom and when. These rules shape the very subjectivity of participants and naturalize case conference debate, so that the 'solutions' suggested in the meeting appear as unavoidable and obvious outcomes of the discussion rather than being socially produced. From a Foucaultian perspective, procedures governing case conferences can be seen as 'conditions of possibility'. From a group analytic perspective underlying rules may be seen as 'basic assumptions'. The focus of the thesis is thus on understanding a series of 'unconscious' rules which constitute participants in education case conferences in relation to each other, shape research objectives and produce commentaries on the child.

Abstract (sommario):
Following a rise in people 'speaking out' about their recovery and thus challenging traditional psychiatric ideas of chronicity, the recovery approach has become a central guiding vision within mental health services. This thesis comprises two parts. The first part applies a genealogical method to conduct a genealogical analysis of the recovery approach through exploration of UK policy within the last decade. This explores the conditions of possibility for its emergence in UK policy and mental health services and its growth. In the second part, a Foucauldian discourse analysis is used to analyse stories of recovery. Recovery stories are collected from organisational websites in the third sector and public sector. Subject positioning and power/knowledge implications are discussed in light of eleven discursive constructions: personal interpretation, person al responsibility, socioeconomic opportunity, self - management, an ongoing process, expertise and sharing stories, professional embodiment, fulfilment through work, living well without work, acceptance of illness and acceptance by others. These 'personal' testimonies might reflect wider discourses in the mental health system. The research shows the powerful interests at play under the discourse of recovery, and the promotion of particular 'truths' that this brings with it. Counter to this are smaller sites of resistance. Implications are discussed for clinical practice and further research.

Abstract (sommario):
19th century America is shaped greatly by territorial expansion into NativeAmerican lands. A famous painting which represents this process is called AmericanProgress by John Gast. This study argues that the display of power between the settlersand the Native Americans in the painting mirrors the dominant discourse on 19th centurywestward expansion. So, the analysis is concerned with how the settlers are constructed, how the Natives are displayed and how this results in a power hierarchy. These findingsare then compared to 19th century discourse on the westward movement. The analysis isguided by the methodological tool of Foucauldian discourse analysis. The analytical stepsare informed by the two American Studies scholars Angela Miller and Martin Christadler. The research is based on pragmatism with a leaning towards constructivism. This studyfinds that American Progress contrasts civilisation and nature in similar ways as thisdichotomy is established in the discourse of the 19th century. Westward expansion in thepainting and in 19th century discourse is justified by constructing the Natives as godlessand the settlers as godly. The difference in brightness in American Progress supports thedichotomies of civilisation and nature as well as godliness and godlessness.

Thesis (MA (General Linguistics))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
This study investigates the ways in which former South African Police (SAP) perpetrators of human rights violations justify their criminal actions in testifying before the Amnesty Committee (AC) of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). In particular, attention goes to the testimonies of former Commissioner of Police Johan van der Merwe, and former member of the Security Branch section of the SAP, Jeffrey Benzien. A key assumption in the study is that the justification of human rights violations is a discursive practice that is largely language dependent (Reisigl & Wodak 200: xi). The research draws on the theoretical aims and methods of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). It refers largely to Benke and Wodak’s (2003) discourse–historical study on the justificatory discourse of ex-Wehrmacht officers of the Austrian army. This study therefore takes a discourse-historical approach to discourse and the data, an approach which takes into consideration the surrounding political and historical context of the selected texts, which are, in this case, the testimonies of perpetrators at the AC hearings. Besides an analysis of the justificatory discourses produced by two former police officers, the study reflects on how the discursive strategies of the apartheid perpetrators compare with one another and with the ex- Wehrmacht officers. CDA and the discourse-historical approach provide interdisciplinary angles on linguistic analysis of a text. For this reason, a review is given of literature which relates the study to political, historical and philosophical insights. The analysis particularly makes use of Foster et al.’s (2005) socio-political study of apartheid perpetrator narratives. The study reveals that perpetrators used a fixed set of justificatory discursive strategies to talk about human rights violations, and their role in such violations. These linguistic strategies are used for a number of different reasons, including reducing personal responsibility, avoiding talking about past atrocities, saving face where personal malicious and degenerate behaviour is made public and diverting feelings of personal guilt. On a discourse theoretical level the study eventually convinces that there are generic strategies typically used in justificatory discourse, whether it be in response to Wehrmacht atrocities of the Second World War or to security force excesses in repressing aspirations of disenfranchised citizens during the last thirty years of the Nationalist government in South Africa. Some stories don’t want to be told. They walk away, carrying their suitcases held together with grey string. Look at their disappearing curved spines. Hunch-backs. Harmed ones. Hold alls. Some stories refuse to be danced or mimed, drop their scuffed canes and clattering tap-shoes, erase their traces in nursery rhymes or ancient games like blind man’s bluff. Abstract (sommario):
The term “feminist” is a widely used label that is often embraced by women who do not advocate feminism. The wide use of the feminist label in contrast to the declining presence of feminist activism indicates a problem with the development of a third wave of feminism in the United States. In this study, I evaluated trends in feminism in the United States through an analysis of public political discourse. A semantic discourse analysis of political discourse from 1870 to 2011 evaluated a shift in the use of inclusive and exclusive pronoun usage by female political speakers. Speeches compiled for this study were obtained from internet sources such as NPR, C-Span and CNN, and evaluated the oratory of Victoria Woodhull, Geraldine Ferraro, Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann. The results of this study indicated that there was not a strong shift in the use of inclusive and exclusive pronouns overtime, but there was a large growth in both population and diversity of the targeted audience, and this growth was often not accommodated for in the discourse of contemporary female political candidates. The slow shift in inclusive discourse indicated a post-feminist line of thought that questioned the validity of an argument for a third wave of feminist activism in the United States. Political discourse cannot define a cause for post-feminism, but can indicate a downward trend in the influence of feminism as a contemporary cultural movement.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation presents an account of fictional discourse which is teleological. According to it, questions about what is said in fiction and how it ought to be said are answerable in terms of the goals and methods belonging specifically to fiction-making as a practice. Viewed in such a way, it is argued that the incompleteness of fictional discourse and its apparent tolerance of inconsistency are distinctive of it. Moreover, it is argued that there is a sense in which one can produce true statements in fiction without thereby committing one self to the thesis that words made use of in fiction are endowed with reference. Throughout the dissertation, the view espoused in it is contrasted with rival positions on the issues of what fiction is about, and whether it can be true. It is argued that a teleological account of fictional discourse can present a coherent alternative to these.

Abstract (sommario):
This article presents a study that has explored the concept of intuitivity in HCI research. A literature study was carried out on 76 articles published at the CHI conference between years 2004 and 2017, all discussing or claiming to design for intuitivity in some capacity. The articles have been approached through the lens of discourse analysis, and an inductive reading has been carried out to identify different perspectives on intuitvity, and themes related to intuitivity that appear in the articles. Ten different perspectives on intuitvity have been found within these articles, providing different views on what intuitivity is, and how to design for it. As they mostly, with a few exceptions, argue that intuitivity is a desirable quality despite these large differences in perspectives it is argued that the term has an exclusionary quality, making that which it does not consider invisible. Implications of this are discussed, with a focus on the fact that all articles assume and design for able-bodied users.
