Abstract (sommario):
This work presents the results of a contrastive analysis of the inaugural speechs of the French Fifth Republic using computer tools (Iramuteq). It is structured around three main axes. The first is to deal with a discursive genre in its own right, linked to a solemn event, in order to become aware of its enunciative particularities, to answer the question relating to its nature, and then to focus on the singularities of the speakers and to apprehend their own strategies of persuasion, as well as the historical conditions which shaped these speeches. Finally, we will try to understand the factors that led to the emergence of a discourse that breaks with a discursive genre that was previously considered particular.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This article analyzes the inaugural speech (discours de réception) delivered in 1981 by Marguerite Yourcenar, the first female writer elected as a member of the French Academy. Since the 17th century, such speeches have been mandatory for newly elected academicians, serving as a communicative product of academic speech practice. The study notes that commemorative speeches in honor of deceased members of the academy typically involve the use of praise as an evaluative strategy. Following the genre’s requirements, Marguerite Yourcenar addresses the conceptual space of “the value of literary heritage” of Roger Caillois, whose “academic chair” she was about to occupy as a new academician. In his work, she identifies authorial conceptual metaphors (such as “life is a game”: vie — jeu) that align with her own value system, confirming this alignment with examples from her own books or life experience. The article highlights authorial conceptual oppositions, including men — women (homes / femmes), friendship — hatred (amitié / haine), and life — death (vie / mort). As a newly elected academician, Marguerite Yourcenar perceives the French Academy as a scientific institution with both merits (Académie — science, littérature, connaissance) and shortcomings (Académie — préjugés, archaїsme), reflecting her personal position as well as her gender and social identity.

Abstract (sommario):
The article begins by considering Giuseppe Ungaretti’s fascination with an early Canzone by Leopardi, “Alla Primavera, o delle favole antiche” (1822). The poem draws on old superstitions about the so-called demonio meridiano said to haunt the earth at noontime. Ungaretti takes this “blind hour” when vision becomes mirage as the inaugural moment of a new poetics, Leopardi finding in the “uncertainty” of modern experience an alternative to the comfortable clichés of neoclassicism. Mallarmé and Valéry later perceive these intensities of light and heat as conditions of a poetry the latter describes “à la fois étranger et étrangère.” Valéry develops this idea of “foreignness” by describing the poet as “un espèce singulière de traducteur qui traduit le discours ordinaire … en ‘langage des dieux’.” The article considers ways in which some later French poets develop this nexus of poetry, painting and translation to explore the kinds of “foreignness” said to animate poetic language.

Abstract (sommario):
The inaugural address has received a fair bit of scholarly attention due to the strength in the argument that it occupies an important position amongst discourses that can be termed political; and of course, the recognition that it performs an important political function within the state. The primary interest in the inaugural address has mainly been from the field of rhetoric and composition. This study approaches the inaugural from a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) perspective that allows for an examination of the discourse of governance as it is ideologically expressed in the inaugural address. Four (4) inaugural addresses of four (4) presidents within Ghana’s Fourth Republican tradition were purposefully selected to create a mini corpus for the study. Using the dialectical relational approach and drawing specifically on the concepts of subject positioning, agency in discourse and intertextuality, the analysis examines the ideological discursive formations of governance expressed in the inaugurals as discourse types as well as looks at the issues of subject positioning and agency and their ideological implications in the inaugural addresses. The analysis reveals that though there is an extent to which the ideological discursive formation of collectivism has been naturalised in the addresses, there exist differences in terms of how the subject is characterised within this collectivism. It also reveals that there are differences in how the principals of the two political traditions express agency within the addresses. We argue that these differences do construct and are constrained by the different ideological discursive formations of the two political traditions that have dominated Ghana’s political space.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The French incumbent president Emmanuel Macron has won the election in 2017 and became the youngest one in French history. His inaugural address could be considered as a good text to do some researches. Critical discourse analysis is an objective method to analyze some texts, but it usually cannot be used alone. With the help of Halliday’s systemic functional grammar, this paper aims to analyze French president Emmanuel Macron’s inaugural address in 2017, mainly from three functions of discourse, in order to conclude language features of Macron’s address and to better understand this kind of political passages.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper we will analyse the inaugural speeches of the two latest presidents of the United States of America, Donald Trump and Joe Biden. The analysis will be based upon the Critical Discourse Analysis model of Norman Fairclough, whereas the methodology used to conduct the research will be based on Systemic Functional Linguistics. We will focus on the material processes because it is through them that concrete action is expressed. This is particularly relevant in inaugural speeches as newly-elected presidents see them as a perfect podium to present what they and their administration plan to do over the course of a four-year mandate. For the sake of the research, we formulated one research question and two hypotheses in order to highlight the ideological differences between the two presidents. In the paper we have answered the research question by establishing that we is the most common Actor of material processes. Also, we have proven the two hypotheses proposed. Namely, the difference in policy and ideology of Trump and Biden has been confirmed by an analysis of Goal in material processes, while the us vs. them dichotomy in Trump’s speech has also been proven. We have concluded that these linguistic differences of the two speeches point to a stark difference in ideology of Trump and Biden.

Abstract (sommario):
The interest of scholars in political discourse has always been drawn to the dynamics of inaugural speeches and the implicit/explicit portrayal of ideologies. Extant studies have explored discourse patterns, thematic orientations, power relations, rhetorical devices, ideologies, and other issues in inaugural speeches. This paper offers a holistic investigation of the recurring ideologies in first-term gubernatorial inaugural speeches across Nigeria. The data for the study are drawn from 25 inaugural speeches made between 2014 and 2015 across the 36 states in Nigeria. The source of the data is Inaugural Speeches: President and Governors of Nigeria (2014-2017). Through the theoretical lens of van Dijk’s approach to critical discourse analysis, four ideologies were identified in the speeches. These manifest ideologies in the speeches are idealistic ideology, theistic ideology, messianic ideology, and democratic ideology. They are found to drive the establishment of the authority of the governors through the process of sensitizing the citizens about the governor’s interpretation of the election, the presentation of novel principles and perspectives that the new administration would imbibe, and how they would inform governance for the tenure. The reoccurring strategies actualized to project the ideologies are consensus, polarization, lexicalization, presupposition, and metaphors.

Abstract (sommario):
Language is a very useful and powerful tool for communication and especially in political discourse it is very significant. During a political speech the leader tries to express, declare, commit, emphasize or motivate the listeners by using one&rsquo;s ideology and power. Political personalities speak in different modes and tones and they announce their planning and aim to keep all aspects under their control and reduce the worry of the people. The aim of this paper is to identify the linguistic features used in the inaugural speeches of selected American Presidents and to analyze their functions using Critical Discourse Analysis theory proposed by Fairclough and the theory of Persuasion postulated by Aristotle. Researchers selected inaugural speeches of George W. Bush and Barack Obama. The study was an attempt to relate the inaugural discourse to the discursive social processes and to find covert ideology and power factors in the speeches. The findings revealed significant differences among the different linguistic features, discursive practices and rhetoric devices used in inaugural speeches of the two US presidents.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to defining the main functions of inaugural speech as a speech genre of Ukrainian political discourse. The functions – integrative, inspiring, declarative and performative – are distinguished. The function of integration is realized as calls to unite the Ukrainian people and appeal to the people as a single community. The inspiring function is to form state values and calls for a better future that has a long historical tradition. In the inaugural speech, this function is subordinated to the integral structural and compositional element, which is quite a large semantic block. Inspirational function is manifested in Ukrainian in two forms: praise of historical events and traditions and criticism of the experience of predecessors. The declarative function is to formulate the principles on which the new president will work, ie the program part of the inaugural speech is subordinated to it. The performative function indicates that the new president swears allegiance to the people, swears to take care of the country and acts as the leader of the state.

Abstract (sommario):
The current research work is a critical discourse analysis of Donald Trump's Inaugural Address (2017). The researcher has made use of Ruth Wodak’s Discourse Historical Model (2004) to study the inaugural address. Moreover, the current research work is qualitative in its approach and analysis, as it answers the research questions in accordance with Ruth Wodak’s Discourse Historical Model (2004). Furthermore, research design used in this research is both descriptive and explanatory; and, it also contains purposive sampling as a data collection method. Although much CDA research has been already carried out on Trump’s speeches, the current research studies Trump’s speech in the context of history and power using Ruth Wodak’s Discourse Historical Model (2004). The researcher has focused lexical and syntactic items in Trump’s speech. Besides, the researcher has found out that power relations, historical norms, ideological constraints, and American values have played a significant role in the discursive construction of Trump’s Inaugural address (2017). Finally, the current research convincingly achieves its objectives and answers its questions.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper looked into the persuasive strategies of President Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III’s public speaking and the hidden ideology that was present in his inaugural speech. Norman Fairclough’s (1995) assumptions in critical discourse analysis that ideologies can be found in texts, that such ideologies can be impossibly separated from texts and that “texts are open to diverse interpretations” was the basis of the study. President Aquino’s persuasive strategies were shown through the evaluation of the ideological and persuasive components of his inaugural speech.

Finally, this contribution will end with a review of academic work that has been done about the digital discourse.

Abstract (sommario):
Political speech might be one of the most problematic types of discourse because it is usually characterized by the use of different techniques and strategies that allow politicians to convey their political messages and persuade people of their ideologies and thoughts. The American presidential inaugural addresses are a form of political discourse that shares the characteristics of both oral and written discourse. It is actually an ample area that worth to be studied to explore some of the features that characterize this type of discourse. This paper is an attempt to investigate the function of repetition in Trump's Inaugural address from a discourse analysis perspective. The analysis revealed that repetition is used as a main strategy in Trump's address to reflect inclusiveness and create a shared responsibility with the audience.

Abstract (sommario):
Political speeches are represented in different shapes as political forum, events or as inaugural speech. This research critically analyzes the inaugural Speech of the President Donald Trump which was delivered on 20th ,January, 2017 from the site<www.cnn.com> retrieved on 10th ,May,2017. The objectives of the study are: First: classifying and discussing well known micro structures (linguistic feature) of the speech, and second: classifying the macro structures i.e. the delivered political inaugural speech in which he includes social structures. To reach to the objectives of the study, the researcher will adopt Norman Fairclough’s three dimensional Analytical Model(1989). Tracing the model, the speech was submitted to description (text analysis), interpretation (processing/ analysis) and explanation (social practice and analysis). The results of the analysis have shown that Trump uses colourful language devices to address Americans. He uses future tense in his speech more than the other tenses to talk about America's future. He creatively repeats certain expressions to show his point of view. The pronoun 'we' is used to talk about the state of America and to show a mutual correlation between Trump and the hearers. Moreover, Trump relays on active voice to get all the hearers active not passive, which reflects the social relations. However, in some instances, he uses passive voice to assure Americans that he will be with them

Abstract (sommario):
The founding of Nature and Culture comes at a time when proenvironmentalattitudes in the world are still high, but the discourse on ecological issues has been eclipsed mostly by issues of security, terrorism, and economic growth. This trend might also be because the debates on ecological issues to date are mostly based on natural scientific evaluations and findings on the state of the natural environment. What is lacking is more input from the humanities, social sciences, and historical sciences so that this dialogue can be interdisciplinary, and even transdisciplinary in nature. To foster such a dialogue, Nature and Culture is intended to be a unique forum for the international community of scholars and practitioners to present, discuss, and evaluate critically issues and themes related to the historical and contemporary relationships that societies, civilizations, empires, regions, and nationstates have with nature. Its pages welcome authors working in areas related to this overall thematic, and especially those who are working on the frontiers of understanding and explaining this historical/contemporary nature/culture relationship, regardless of discipline. Our object is to produce a journal serving those scholars and practitioners whose theoretical orientations extend beyond disciplinary boundaries, and who are moving beyond specific specializations toward broader syntheses with intentions to participate in intellectual and practical discussions on our ecosystem’s past trends and future prospects.

Abstract (sommario):
The article develops the traditional rhetorical “issues” contained in inaugural speeches of American presidents as macrotopical entities which are applied to construct communicative semantic structures of those speeches consisting of macrotopics and respective topics in the realm of discourse linguistics. We propose a major rhetorical macrotopical cycle (MRMC) as a basic structure of those speeches. Most general repeated topics (macrotopics) in the Inaugural Speeches are Domestic Issues, International Issues, American Traditions and Other (Reference to the Audience, Reference to God, Application to Himself). Research of communicative semantic peculiarities of the use of such macrotopics in the Inaugural Speeches of the US Presidents of the beginning of the 21st century and their comparison constitute the subject matter of this article. Analyzing MRMCs within each of the Inaugural Speeches produces communicative semantic discourse description of them and gives the possibility to compare them. A tendency to use certain macrotopics in repeated orders in the speeches is found out. To a certain extent in all Inaugural Speeches of the US presidents we singled out the phenomenon which can be called major rhetorical macrotopical cycle which most frequently consists of the following macrotopics: Reference to the Audience – American Traditions – Domestic / International Issues and Reference to God. Communicative semantic structures of those speeches differ between themselves in the of such cycles, forms and subtypes of MRMCs. The peculiarities of the use of MRMCs by American presidents of the beginning of the 21st century are analysed and compared.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The authors of the article focus on a comparative analysis of linguistic constructs representing communicative strategies and tactics, the combination of which determines the unique synergistic structure of the inaugural discourse in different language cultures (Russian/Chinese). The relevance of this work is defined by the object of the study itself. The act of inauguration, being a crucial marker in the political culture of society, represents a complex institutional phenomenon. On the one hand, it records the transition and legitimation of state power, and on the other hand, it ensures the generation and acceptance of ideas that manifest the conventional system of values, thereby ensuring the stability of a specific linguocultural space. Through the linguopragmatic analysis of the inaugural speeches of the state leaders of the Russian Federation and China, such as V.V. Putin, D.A. Medvedev, B.N. Yeltsin, Xi Jinping, Hu Jintao, Jiang Zemin (from 1991 to 2023), the authors of the article prove that the invariant goal-setting of the inaugural address determines a strict implementation of genre canons. However, the external symbolic framework of the procedure adheres to nationally significant axiological constants, whereas the ritual intentional message of the inaugural discursive practice is inevitably modified by each leader of the country during the individual speech formulation in accordance with the expectations of the electorate. This leads to linguistic variability both in the inaugural speech and in the inaugural discourse as a whole. The present research is believed to enable the identification of general trends in the development of forms of civil society governance, to examine specific cases of their implementation in a particular linguocultural space, to describe the process of conceptualizing the “key words” of the main agents of political communication, and, as a result, to forecast the development vector of collective and individual consciousness of civil society representatives.

Abstract (sommario):
The 2020 U.S presidential election came with the result of Joe Biden’s victory. This research is aimed at investigating Biden’s ideology manifested in his inaugural speech which was delivered on January 20, 2021. The analysis in this research was conducted under the theory of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). In finding the ideology, the researcher worked on the microstructure level by studying the presupposition as proposed by Dijk. The result of this research shows that there are three types of presupposition present in Biden’s inaugural speech i.e. lexical, existential, and factive in which lexical presupposition appear to be the most frequent one. The analysis of the presupposition also result to the finding of Biden’s ideology manifestation towards the issue of immigrants, healthcare, racism, democracy, and climate change.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This paper investigates the reference statements and rhetorical functions of politicians’ reactive (“uptaking”) statements in parliamentary debates as well as their self-positioning effects. Uptaking moves may be used by speakers for pursuing strategic, global discourse aims. The specific properties of such ‘uptaking’ utterances and their sequential embedding in the unfolding discourse provide analysts with cues of speakers’ global interactional goals. Results indeed show how global and local pragmatic factors impact content, form, and rhetorical function of MPs’ uptaking statements. The data comprises four Austrian parliamentary sessions, which follow the inaugural speech each newly appointed Austrian chancellor has to deliver in the Austrian national assembly at the beginning of a legislative term. Overall, four fifths of the uptaking discourse units (consisting of ‘reference to previous statement plus comment’) refer to the government program, the inaugural speech or a previous MPs’ statement. Whereas a closer investigation of the reference statements seems to indicate a left wing vs. right wing rhetorical pattern (with left wing and center parties referring to ‘official’ sources, while right wing parties set their own topical agenda), investigating the rhetorical functions of the uptaking discourse units reveals a clear government vs. opposition (but no party-specific) rhetoric: Government party MPs praise the government program (or the inaugural speech), opposition party speakers criticize it. Both groups thus focus on the interpersonal plain of interaction. In contrast, argumentative (or counter-argumentative) uptaking discourse units which would indicate speakers’ willingness to enter into a rational discourse (in a Habermasian sense) with their political opponents are extremely rare. Through their rhetorical activities, the vast majority of government and opposition speakers thus reinforce and perpetuate already known political stances and affiliations in front of a third party (i.e. the general public watching the debates via TV or Internet livestream) rather than presenting themselves as rational, problem-focused politicians.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to the study of the semantic and contextual features of the inaugural speeches organization in cases when religious concepts function in them. The relevance of the study is determined by the importance of analyzing the pragmatic characteristics of the religious concepts functioning in American presidents’ inaugural speeches. Research methods are cognitive-discursive analysis, contextual analysis, method of quantitative processing of the material. Empirical material contains 57 inaugural texts, in which the functioning of religious concepts is noted in 296 contexts. US presidents regularly use religious concepts in their inaugural speeches, in some cases of their functioning, inaugural texts have certain structural features that are emphasized in this work. The article analyzes the main pragmatic guidelines for using these concepts: actualization of the moral and ethical values of society, underlining the importance of continuity in the history of the state, implication of the meaning of the divine election of the president and the idea of a special relationship of the Creator to the American people, seeking divine help in leading the state. The study of the role of the religious concepts functioning in the inaugural speeches of American presidents allows us to consider in more detail the linguistic and extralinguistic features of political discourse texts.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In this study we contrast metaphors and metaphorical stories in President Trump’s 2017 inaugural address with those of former President Barack Obama’s first inaugural address. We draw on the concept of ‘rhetorical confinement’ (Patterson, 2011) to show how the contrasting life trajectories of the two leaders are reflected in the contrasting themes and tone established by their metaphorical language. We argue that Obama’s rhetorical tone, including his use of metaphors, was at least in part a response to the compound constraints of race and class. In contrast, Trump’s rhetorical tone and use of metaphors reflects and reinforces his image as a political outsider, as a challenge to the constraints of ordinary political discourse. The contrast between the rhetorically confined politeness of Obama’s discourse (lampooned as ‘political correctness’ by many of his opponents) and the unconstrained crudeness of Trump’s discourse (lauded as ‘telling it like it is’) apparently legitimates the open expression of previously suppressed resentments and encourages an extreme rhetoric that is symptomatic of, and may contribute to, the growing polarization in American political discourse.

Abstract (sommario):
Inaugural speeches are crucial to political processes because they are avenues to mobilize, seek for support, persuade the people and consolidate their loyalty throughout the administration. Political actors, therefore, use the medium to persuade, manipulate, or simply inform their audience about their administration's policies. Their speeches are carefully crafted to convey their messages which definitely have ideological intents because political speeches are not value-free or neutral in terms of ideological leanings. In this study, the authors investigate the discourse strategiesin the inaugural speeches of Barrister ShehuShema. This is done by operationalizing some tenets of Critical Discourse Analysis with the aim of uncovering covert ideologies enshrined in the inaugural speeches. Several linguistic facilities such as allusions, conversational tone, pronominal references, positive face-strategies, etc are used by the speaker to change the orientation of the people and sold his party agenda to them. All these linguistic tools, as wielded by BarristerShema, help to underscore the fact that 'ideologiestruly reside in texts' and cannot be read off. The findings revealed that the languageused in the speeches are consciously and skillfully deployed to champion his party ideologies of inclusiveness, fairness and justice, continuity, acceptance of religious diversity, and unity

Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to the thorough study of the inaugural address as a genre of public speeches on the material of the Brazilian political discourse. The political discourse of Brazil, unlike the discourse in English, German or other languages, has so far not attracted due attention of researchers, and the present paper is intended to fill the lacuna. The work presents the results of analysis of speeches of this genre of four Brazilian presidents: J. Sarney, L. da Silva, D. Rousseff and J. Bolsonaro. The article describes typical features and elements inherent in the genre of inaugural adress as a whole, the fundamental characteristic of which is its ritual character. A comparison of the speeches of the politicians chosen by the author for the study, despite the similarity of their content and the identity of the thematic blocks, gives an idea of the linguistic features and speech strategies of each particular president.

Abstract (sommario):
The subject of this research is the expressive potential of prosody in the 2021 inaugural speech of Joe Biden. Analysis is conducted on the peculiarities of functionality of such prosodic means as melody, accentuation, pausation, rhythm and other. Assessment is given to their interaction with the widespread stylistic techniques, as well as their role in carrying out the traditional functions for inaugural rhetoric that determine its genre distinctness. The article employs the method of auditory scene analysis of speech of the political, which vividly illustrates the significance of modifications of suprasegmental parameters for conveying the communicative intent of the speech. The scientific novelty lies in studying the expressive capabilities of prosodic means within a specific variety of political discourse &ndash; the inaugural speech as a genre of epideictic rhetoric, viewing the implementation of specific functions in the unity of linguistic and extralinguistic factors. Attention is given to the general peculiarities of discursive practice of the inaugural speeches, as well as the context of a specific communicative situation &ndash; unprecedented circumstances of delivering speech by the the 46th President of the United States, as well as the personal traits of the speaker. The acquired results demonstrate the expressive potential of prosodic modifications in the oral speech, which can be used in teaching students majoring in philology the principles of text analysis of the political discourse through the prism of prosody, expressive syntax, stylistics, and rhetoric.
