Abstract (sommario):
In an increasingly digitalized society where digital tools and social networks are widely used by popular youth, “moral panics” find a new field of application. Naivety, dangerousness, screen addiction, technological illiteracy, search for buzz through filmed fights, provocation, obesity: as many repressed representations which are being reactivated. This thesis questions the relationship between digital technology and young people in situations of social vulnerability and the socio-educational professionals who accompany them. Carried out in a sensitive territory in Île de France*, through an ethnographic approach (physical and virtual), this thesis is the result of three years of field work (2019-2022) carried out with around thirty professionals in the field of Specialized Prevention and around sixty young people, aged 12 to 23, accompanied by street educators. We analyse the representations of these professionals on the digital practices of young people, in particular regarding digital social networks, and confront them with the digital uses of the former. Firstly, we note the prevalence, in the sector, of negative vision of the digital practices of young people, relating to a phenomenon that we describe as “digital panic”. Secondly, we question this “digital panic” by retracing the digital lives of young people. We underline that “popular online youth” use digital social networks to flourish, develop a cultural practice and above all maintain friendships, even if their digital practices are part of situated social relationships. Finally, we explore the different digital practices of a certain number of professionals who, rejecting “digital panic”, are investing in the juvenile digital world. The new digital sociabilities are experienced here as a “digital test” which invites them to update their guidance methods and to develop what we call a “digitalized educational relationship”. This thesis aims to demonstrate that traditionally pessimistic discourses towards working-class youth, which are rooted in a concern towards any new cultural practice, reflect on the methods of educational support for their digital practices

Abstract (sommario):
Digital art installation is the result of informatic materials entering gallery spaces and challenging the establishment of media forms. This thesis contends that the open, recursive and recombinatory process of looking at digital installation is in fact the result of noisy relations between information and the spatial temporal contexts of the art gallery. In order to focus on the processes of informatic materials within gallery spaces, this thesis identifies four key modulations of noise and materiality ? emergence, feedback, entropy and delay. I demonstrate how these impact on a range of recent digital installations by Australian and New Zealand artists. The lens of digital materiality shifts from an informational context into that of art history where it is found to highlight the systemic relationality of the installation. The thesis opens with a consideration of histories of media-specificity, and argues for a necessary separation of our concepts of media and materiality. This context provides a set of tools by which the remainder of the thesis investigates a range of digital material flows that are not tied to fixed media definitions. I draw on a range of theorists including Umberto Eco, Gilles Deleuze, Claude Shannon and Jack Burnham to further locate these material flows within two strands: experimental sound and information theory. This discussion forms the basis of the thesis? re-appraisal of media distinctions and highlights the complex relationship of informational materials to both sonic and visual histories. The second half of the thesis undertakes an appraisal of emergence, feedback, entropy and delay in specific works and suggests dimensionality, movement and duration as key determinants of the digital installation. These chapters demonstrate that what is at stake in digital installation is the viewer?s implicit role in the shifting relationships of digital materiality. Overall, this thesis presents a framework for emergent materiality in digital installation. I develop a theory of emergent materiality as a process specific to digital installation, and argue that digital installation is in fact a subject-forming assemblage of information-noise in which relations of dimensionality, movement and duration coalesce without cohering. And, within which gallery spaces begin to get noisy.

Abstract (sommario):
A 12-bit 2.8-MHz delta sigma modulator intended for ADSL applications is presented in this thesis. The design process evolved over two stages, namely, a system-level design stage followed by a circuit-level design stage. During the first phase of the design, the systemlevel parameters are selected and analog-circuit specifications are derived. The circuitlevel stage involved the design of analog circuitry such as operational amplifiers capable of meeting the system-level specifications. The circuit design was carried out in 1-V 65- nm CMOS technology. Double-sampling was employed to make the switched-capacitor circuits more power efficient. Input-signal feedforward was used to lower the signal swing at the output of the opamps. Digital input feedforward is used and presented as an alternative to analog input feedforward.

Abstract (sommario):
Digital holography is a technique for the recording of holograms via CCD/CMOS devices and enables their subsequent numerical reconstruction within computers, thus avoiding the photographic processes that are used in optical holography. This thesis investigates the various techniques which have been developed for digital holography. It develops and successfully demonstrates a number of refinements and additions in order to enhance the performance of the method and extend its applicability. The thesis contributes to both the experimental and numerical analysis aspects of digital holography. Regarding experimental work: the thesis includes a comprehensive review and critique of the experimental arrangements used by other workers and actually implements and investigates a number of these in order to compare performance. Enhancements to these existing methods are proposed, and new methods developed, aimed at addressing some of the perceived short-comings of the method. Regarding the experimental aspects, the thesis specifically develops:• Super-resolution methods, introduced in order to restore the spatial frequencies that are lost or degraded during the hologram recording process, a problem which is caused by the limited resolution of CCD/CMOS devices.• Arrangements for combating problems in digital holography such as: dominance of the zero order term, the twin image problem and excessive speckle noise.• Fibre-based systems linked to tunable lasers, including a comprehensive analysis of the effects of: signal attenuation, noise and laser instability within such systems.• Two-source arrangements for contouring, including investigating the limitations on achievable accuracy with such systems. Regarding the numerical processing, the thesis focuses on three main areas. Firstly, the numerical calculation of the Fresnel-Kirchhoff integral, which is of vital importance in performing the numerical reconstruction of digital holograms. The Fresnel approximation and the convolution approach are the two most common methods used to perform numerical reconstruction. The results produced by these two methods for both simulated holograms and real holograms, created using our experimental systems, are presented and discussed. Secondly, the problems of the zero order term, twin image and speckle noise are tackled from a numerical processing point of view, complementing the experimental attack on these problems. A digital filtering method is proposed for use with reflective macroscopic objects, in order to suppress both the zero-order term and the twin image. Thirdly, for the two-source contouring technique, the following issues have been discussed and thoroughly analysed: the effects of the linear factor, the use of noise reduction filters, different phase unwrapping algorithms, the application of the super-resolution method, and errors in the illumination angle. Practical 3D measurement of a real object, of known geometry, is used as a benchmark for the accuracy improvements achievable via the use of these digital signal processing techniques within the numerical reconstruction stage. The thesis closes by seeking to draw practical conclusions from both the experimental and numerical aspects of the investigation, which it is hoped will be of value to those aiming to use digital holography as a metrology tool.

Abstract (sommario):
The overall aim of this thesis is to explore freedom of speech and aspects of credibility related to the Internet. The phenomenon freedom of speech is seen and examined principally from a communicative perspective. Theoretically the thesis is based on three key concepts: Internet, freedom of speech, and credibility. Four studies are included; each of them focuses on the main problem from different angles using different methods. In the first study, two websites on the Internet, both having reference to the Holocaust, are examined. The aim is to identify some kind of hypertextual dialogue between Living history [Levande historia], representing a serious project about human respect and democracy, and True history [Sann historia], a plagiator expressing a revisionist opinion. The second study examines a media debate about freedom of speech and censorship related to the Internet found in newspaper articles published during 1997-1999, to see which issues these newspapers emphasise, and how the role of the Internet is described. The third study focuses on how university students writing essays assess the credibility of scientific information in web-based environments. In a questionnaire, the students estimate the importance they attach to 24 different elements. The fourth study seeks to increase the understanding of the function and dynamics of Wikipedia as a collaboratively shaped wiki-encyclopaedia. In e-mail interviews, active users are asked about their impressions and experiences. Based on the studies, some reflections on what could be considered as special with the freedom of speech on the Internet are presented. These reflections, in terms of seven aspects, are referred to as the hypertext structure, the collage effect, boundless identities, shift in responsibility, parallel worlds and hyper reality, the compensating effect, and the leaching effect. A concept, denominated the hypertextual dialogue, has emerged during the work on this thesis. This concept has a technical, an intertextual and a discursive level. The discussion deals with the news media’s approach towards the Internet, what their possible agenda could be, and the impact they have on people. Internet’s pluralism and its consequences are discussed. Wikipedia could serve as a model by showing how committed individuals interact to create a competitive product. When users interact with and within the hypertextual structure, the construction of meaning, as well as the responsibility for the consequences, would move from the texts’ original authors to the users. Perhaps the Internet requires the involvement of some kind of homo navigare who is able to function within, outside and between digital arenas.

Abstract (sommario):
In this theses techniques for high-speed digital delta-sigma modulator(DDSM) structures are considered. Four techniques are applied andevaluated: unfolding, increasing the number of delay elements in theinner loop, pipelining/retiming, and optimizations provided by thesynthesis tool. Of interest is to see the speed-area-power trade-offs.For implementation, three different modulators meeting the samerequirements are implemented. Each modulator has a 16-bit input andresults in a 3-bit output. The baseline case is a second-ordermodulator, which has one delay element in its inner loop. Throughoptimization, two new structures are found: to provide two delayelements in the inner loop, a fourth-order modulator is required, while to provide three delay elements, a thirteenth-order modulator isobtained. The results show that in general it is better to unfold the modulatorthan to obtain the speed-up through optimizing the arithmeticoperators with the synthesis tool. Using correct pipelining/retimingis also crucial. Finally, for very high-speed implementation, usingthe structures with more delay elements is required. Also, in manycases these are more area and power efficient compared to usingoptimized arithmetic operators, despite their higher computationalcomplexity.

Abstract (sommario):
A novel method of Transmission Lines (TLs) protection is presented and discussed in this work. The proposed algorithm performs the traditional steps of distance relaying, such as: fault detection, classification and location. The new method applies the Higher Order Statistics (HOS), also known as cumulants, as a tool for feature extraction in order to apply Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for pattern classification. These networks are responsible for the processing of information, identifying a possible fault condition, the type of fault and, finally, its location in terms of fault zones considered for the problem. The application of HOS in a protection scheme is responsible for the transformation of electrical data, such as current signals, to a different domain where the different types of faults are highlighted by different classes of samples. The available database was obtained by simulating an Electric Power System and it is used for computing the statistics and training/validating the distinct neural networks of each step of the distance protection. A relay prototype is obtained by combining these steps in a synchronized operation. This prototype allowed the execution of extensive tests, simulating the operation of a protective system in real-time. Despite the use of currents signals only, the proposed method provided efficient protection for the EPS under study. In fact, comparing the results with a traditional method applied to distance protection, based on apparent impedance, an improvement of the protection performance was demonstrated. Especially for faults involving one phase and the ground, the most common in power systems, the results of the new methodology was significantly superior to that of the conventional relay. It can be concluded that the technique presents a high relevance for applications in transmission line protection.

Abstract (sommario):
Today's wireless transceivers require reference signals to translate received and transmitted signals to their desired frequencies. Therefore, they need frequency synthesizers which are typically based on phase-locked-loops (PLLs). Communication standards like GSM or Bluetooth necessiate that the PLLs put out oscillations with high spectral purity and accuracy. Additionally, the oscillation frequency must be adjustable very accurately at low transient time to account for occasional carrier frequency changes. So called Sigma-Delta-fractional-N frequency synthesizers are often employed to fulfil these requirements. However, the number and the locations of the poles of the control loop and hence the loop filter must be chosen properly. Unity gain frequency and phase margin have to be considered as well as the stringent frequency accuracy and the detailed origin of the spurious emissions. The design methodology proposed in this work is based on numerical optimization techniques, a high number of control loop poles and the use of Gm-C-biquads as loop filter building blocks.

Abstract (sommario):
This master thesis is about Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm or ECDSA and two of the known attacks on this security system. The purpose of this thesis is to find points that are likely to be points of high order on an elliptic curve. If we have a point P of high order and if Q = mP, then we have a large set of possible values of m. Therefore it is hard to solve the Elliptic Curve Discrete Logarithm Problem or ECDLP. We have investigated on the time of finding the solution of ECDLP for a certain amount of elliptic curves based on the order of the point which is used to create the digital signatures by those elliptic curves. Method: Algebraic Structure of elliptic curves over finite fields and Discrete logarithms. This has been done by two types of attacks namely Baby Step, Giant Step and Pollard’s Rho and all of the programming parts has been done by means of Mathematica. Conclusion: We have come into a conclusion of having the probable good points which are the points of high order on elliptic curves through the mentioned attacks in which solving the ECDLP is harder if these points have been used in generating the digital signature. These probable good points can be estimated by means of a function we have come up with. The input of this function is the order of the point and the output is the time of finding the answer of ECDLP.

Abstract (sommario):
This work is about design of convenient high-order continuous-time sigma-delta modulators for EFBD systems. Of all studied sorts of the resonators, Lamb wave resonators are chosen to obtain the required Q-factor. Also, solutions are proposed to overcome the issues of piezo-electique resonators. A new structure of 6th-order modulators based on weighted feedforward techniques is proposed. This structure provides moreover a filtering STF without modifying the NTF. An optimization method on the modifiable parameters of the proposed topology is developed to recover the performance of the modulator accounting analog imperfections. Finally, a second-order modulator is implemented to benchmark the proposed solutions

Abstract (sommario):
In order to cope up with the ever increasing demand for larger transmission bandwidth, Radio over Fiber technology is a very beneficial solution. These systems are expected to play a major role within future fifth generation wireless networks due to their inherent capillary distribution properties. Nonlinear compensation techniques are becoming increasingly important to improve the performance of telecommunication channels by compensating for channel nonlinearities. Indeed, significant bounds on the technology usability and performance degradation occur due to nonlinear characteristics of optical transmitter, nonlinear generation of spurious frequencies, which, in the case of RoF links exploiting Directly Modulated Lasers , has the combined effect of laser chirp and optical fiber dispersion among its prevailing causes. The purpose of the research is to analyze some of the main causes of harmonic and intermodulation distortion present in Radio over Fiber (RoF) links, and to suggest a solution to reduce their effects, through a digital predistortion technique. Predistortion is an effective and interesting solution to linearize and this allows to demonstrate that the laser’s chirp and the optical fiber’s dispersion are the main causes which generate harmonic distortion. The improvements illustrated are only theoretical, based on a feasibility point of view. The simulations performed lead to significant improvements for short and long distances of radio over fiber link lengths. The algorithm utilized for simulation has been implemented on MATLAB. The effects of chirp and fiber nonlinearity in a directly modulated fiber transmission system are investigated by simulation, and a cost effective and rather simple technique for compensating these effects is discussed. A detailed description of its functional model is given, and its attractive features both in terms of quality improvement of the received signal, and cost effectiveness of the system are illustrated.

Abstract (sommario):
Visual search is an inhomogeneous, yet efficient sampling process accomplished by the saccades and the central (foveal) vision. Areas that attract the central vision have been studied for errors in interpretation of medical images. In this study, we extend existing visual search studies to understand features of areas that receive direct visual attention and elicit a mark by the radiologist (True and False Positive decisions) from those that elicit a mark but were captured by the peripheral vision. We also investigate if there are any differences between these areas and those that are never fixated by radiologists. Extending these investigations, we further explore the possibility of modelling radiologists’ search behavior and their interpretation of mammograms using deep machine learning techniques. We demonstrated that energy profiles of foveated (FC), peripherally fixated (PC), and never fixated (NFC) areas are distinct. It was shown that FCs are selected on the basis of being most informative. Never fixated regions were found to be least informative. Evidences that energy profiles and dwell time of these areas influence radiologists’ decisions (and confidence in such decisions) were also shown. High-order features provided additional information to the radiologists, however their effect on decision (and confidence in such decision) was not significant. We also showed that deep-convolution neural network can successfully be used to model radiologists’ attentional level, decisions and confidence in their decisions. High accuracy and high agreement (between true and predicted values) in such predictions can be achieved in modelling attentional level (accuracy: 0.90, kappa: 0.82) and decisions (accuracy: 0.92, kappa: 0.86) of radiologists. Our results indicated that an ensembled model for radiologist’s search behavior and decision can successfully be built. Convolution networks failed to model missed cancers however.

Abstract (sommario):

In this paper, a new fractional order chaotic system without equilibrium is proposed, analyti-cally and numerically investigated, and numerically and experimentally tested. The analytical and numerical investigation were used to describe the system dynamical behaviors including, the system equilibria, the chaotic attractors, the bifurcation diagrams and the Lyapunov expo-nents. Based on the obtained dynamical behaviors, the system can excite hidden chaotic attrac-tors since it has no equilibrium. Then, a synchronization mechanism based on the adaptive con-trol theory has been developed between two identical new systems (master and slave). The adaptive control laws are derived based on synchronization error dynamics of the state varia-bles for the master and slave. Consequently, the update laws of the slave parameters are ob-tained, where the slave parameters are assumed to be uncertain and estimate corresponding to the master parameters by the synchronization process. Furthermore, Arduino Due boards were used to implement the proposed system in order to demonstrate its practicality in real-world applications. The simulation experimental results are obtained by MATLAB and the Arduino Due boards respectively, where a good consistent between the simulation results and the ex-perimental results. indicating that the new fractional order chaotic system is capable of being employed in real-world applications.

Many digital goods also come on physical mediums, such as movies and games on discs. We investigate how the order of purchase (buying a digital copy of a good already owned in physical form or vice versa) and order of presentation (considering one form of the good and then a bundle of both) can affect consumer valuations of the second purchase and bundles containing both physical and digital goods. Using a series of experiments, we show that (a) physical goods are more valuable than digital goods, (b) consumers who own digital (physical) goods are more (less) willing to purchase a second, physical (digital) copy of the same good, and (c) presenting consumers a digital product for consideration first can lead to lower willingness to pay for a bundle containing both physical and digital forms of the good. Internalized reference prices and the anchoring and adjustment heuristic are used to explain these results.

Abstract (sommario):
The drastic increase in the number of internet users and the general convergence of all other communication systems into an optical system have brought a sharp rise in demand for bandwidth and calls for high capacity transmission networks. Large unamplified transmission reach is another contributor in reducing deployment costs of an optical communication system. Spectrally efficient modulation formats are suggested as a solution to overcome the problems associated with limited channels and bandwidth of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical communication systems. Higher order modulation formats which are considered to be spectrally efficient and can increase the transmission capacity by transmitting more information in the amplitude, phase, polarization or a combination of all was studied. Different detection technologies are to be implemented to suit a particular higher order modulation format. In this research multilevel modulation formats, different detection technologies and a digital signal processing aided receiver were studied in a practical optical transmission system. The work in this thesis started with the implementation of the traditional amplitude shift keying (ASK) modulation and a differential phase shift keying (DPSK) modulation systems as they form the basic building block in the design of higher order modulation formats. Results obtained from using virtual photonics instruments (VPI)simulation software, receiver sensitivity for 10Gbpsnon-return-to-zero (NRZ), amplitude phase shift keying (ASK) and DPSK signals were measured to be -22.7 dBm and -22.0 dBm respectively. Performance comparison for the two modulation formats were done over different transmission distances. ASK also known as On-Off keying (OOK) performed better for shorter lengths whereas DPSK performed better for longer lengths of up to90km.Experimental results on a 10 Gbps NRZ- ASK signal gave a receiver sensitivity of -21.1 dBm from digital signal processing (DSP) aided receiver against -19.8 dBm from the commercial bit error ratio tester (BERT) yielding a small difference of 1.3 dB hence validating the reliability and accuracy of the digital signal processing (DSP) assisted receiver. Traditional direct detection scheme and coherent detection scheme performances were evaluated again on a 10 Gbps NRZ ASK signal. Coherent detection that can achieve a large unamplified transmission reach and has a higher passive optical splitting ratio was first evaluated using the VPI simulation software. Simulation results gave a receiver sensitivity of -30.4 dBm forcoherent detection and -18.3 dBm for direct detection, yielding a gain in receiver sensitivity of 12.1 dB. The complex coherently detected signal, from the experimental setup gave a receiver sensitivity of -20.6 dBm with a gain in receiver sensitivity of 3.5 dBm with respect to direct detection. A multilevel pulse amplitude modulation (4-PAM) that doubles the data rate per channel from10 Gbps to 20 Gbps by transmitting more information in the amplitude of the carrier signal was implemented. This was achieved by modulating the optical amplitude with an electrical four level amplitude shift keyed (ASK) signal. A receiver consisting of a single photodiode, three decision circuits and a decoding logic circuit was used to receive and extract the original transmitted data. A DSP aided receiver was used to evaluate the link performance. A receiver sensitivity of -12.8 dBm is attained with a dispersion penalty of about 7.2 dB after transmission through 25 km of G.652 fibre.

Abstract (sommario):
This project is inspired by two facts that occur on an everyday basis in much of the world. First, it is obvious that many persons and organizations in many developing nations are paying large amounts of money for large-scale architecture projects, including skyscrapers, museums, and airport, subway, and train terminals. It is often the case that as the mega-buildings are built, many useful materials—structural steel, wood, reinforcing rods, sheets of corrugated steel, and concrete among them--are wasted, even though they could be utilized in smaller projects. The second fact is that digital technology is playing a more important role in the daily life of many people and professionals. The development of such technologies also influences the ways in which buildings are created. Many types of software programs now facilitate the standard and non-standard workings of architecture offices worldwide, starting with design, moving through fabrication, and culminating with assembly. It is suggested that we can reuse the scraps from huge construction projects to provide much needed small buildings in the developing world (such as houses or small commercial structures) by using new digital technologies. As the technology becomes available, many architects will be able to adapt and utilize all types of raw materials in the most efficient ways possible while minimizing the amount of waste taken to landfill sites. To advance these ideas, the author worked as an intern at Morphosis and visited the offices of Gehry Partners and Greg Lynn Form (all in Los Angeles), and Sharpies Holden Pasquarelli Architects (SHoP) in New York; these firms are among the most influential offices in the world, both in regards to the buildings they design and the digital technologies with which they work. Rule-based design was studied to better understand the logic of computation. Simultaneously, several experimental projects were designed and built. The knowledge gained from these studies, experiences, and experiments can give us confidence that new technology can help architects and designers organize the complexity of unique scraps for use in the construction of buildings or building components. However, problems were revealed that are in need of attention. For example, the machines that are typically used for digital fabrication procedures today, such as the laser cutter and CNC router, do not provide the best support for this work because they are not intended to be used with scraps and the price of the machine is relatively high.It is hoped that this project can be a small first step for other architects to understand the possibility and the logic of digital technology within the realm of building construction waste. If studied and understood, the new technology can be a very powerful tool to utilize the leftover material in the most efficient way.

Abstract (sommario):
In its open and private-based dimension, the Internet is the epitome of the Liberal International Order in its global spatial dimension. Therefore, normative questions arise from the emergence of powerful non-liberal actors such as China in Internet governance. In particular, China has supported a UN-based multilateral Internet governance model based on state sovereignty aimed at replacing the existing ICANN-based multistakeholder model. While persistent, this debate has become less dualistic through time. However, fear of Internet fragmentation has increased as the US-China technological competition grew harsher. This thesis inquires “(To what extent) are Chinese stakeholders reshaping the rules of Global Internet Governance?”. This is further unpacked in three smaller questions: (i) (To what extent) are Chinese stakeholders contributing to increased state influence in multistakeholder fora?; (ii) (how) is China contributing to Internet fragmentation?; and (iii) what are the main drivers of Chinese stakeholders’ stances? To answer these questions, Chinese stakeholders’ actions are observed in the making and management of critical Internet resources at the IETF and ICANN respectively, and in mobile connectivity standard-making at 3GPP. Through the lens of norm entrepreneurship in regime complexes, this thesis interprets changes and persistence in the Internet governance normative order and Chinese attitudes towards it. Three research methods are employed: network analysis, semi-structured expert interviews, and thematic document analysis. While China has enhanced state intervention in several technological fields, fostering debates on digital sovereignty, this research finds that the Chinese government does not exert full control on its domestic private actors and concludes that Chinese stakeholders have increasingly adapted to multistakeholder Internet governance as they grew influential within it. To enhance control over Internet-based activities, the Chinese government resorted to regulatory and technical control domestically rather than establishing a splinternet. This is due to Chinese stakeholders’ interest in retaining the network benefits of global interconnectivity.

Abstract (sommario):
The production processes on contemporary media art (post-1990\'s) are discussed through the second order cybernetics perspective, whose principles study the observer and observed as a circular motion. The research methodology is based on the Grounded Theory. The argument emerges by blending together the theoretical framework on the subject with the information collected through observations, conversations and interviews. The analysis is developed in three chapters, all interrelated exploring the relationships between accident and control in the media art field. In the first chapter the conceptual structure of this artistic production is analyzed. In the second chapter, we explore the relationships that emerge between creative agents during the process, observing such production as a social system being ruled by conversation. In the third chapter, picturing the collective creative experience as means to the construction of knowledge spaces, we apply to the architectural field what we learned about the production process of media art. Our final conclusions bring our perception to the relations between media art and architecture leading to the utopian character of our arguments.

Abstract (sommario):
Outcomes of innovative designing are frequently described as enabling us in achieving more desirable futures. How can we design and innovate so as to enable future processes of design and innovation? To investigate this question, this thesis probes the conditions, possibilities and limitations of toolmaking for novelty and knowledge generation, or in other words, it examines designing for designing. The focus of this thesis is on the development of digital design tools that support the reconciliation of conflicting criteria centred on architectural geometry. Of particular interest are the roles of methodological approaches and of biological analogies as guides in toolmaking for design, as well as the possibility of generalising design tools beyond the contexts from which they originate. The presented investigation consists of an applied toolmaking study and a subsequent reflective analysis using second- order cybernetics as a theoretical framework. Observations made during the toolmaking study suggest that biological analogies can, in informal ways, inspire designing, including the designing of design tools. Design tools seem to enable the generation of novelty and knowledge beyond the contexts in and for which they are developed only if their users apply them in ways unanticipated by the toolmaker. Abstract The reflective analysis offers theoretical explanations for these observations based on aspects of second-order cybernetics. These aspects include the modelling of designing as a conversation, different relationships between observers (such as designers) and systems (such as designers engaged in their projects), the distinction between coded and uncoded knowledge, as well as processes underlying the production and the restriction of meaning. Initially aimed at the development of generally applicable, prescriptive digital tools for designing, the presented work results in a personal descriptive model of novelty and knowledge generation in science and design. This shift indicates a perspective change from a positivist to a relativist outlook on designing, which was accomplished over the course of the study. Investigating theory and practice of designing and of science, this study establishes an epistemological model of designing that accommodates and extends a number of theoretical concepts others have previously proposed. According to this model, both design and science generate and encode new knowledge through conversational processes, in which open-minded perception appears to be of greater innovative power than efforts to exercise control. The presented work substantiates and exemplifies radical constructivist theory of knowledge and novelty production, establishes correspondences between systems theory and design research theory and implies that mainstream scientific theories and practices are insufficient to account for and to guide innovation. Keywords (separated by commas) Digital design tools, geometry rationalisation, second-order cybernetics, knowledge generation

Abstract (sommario):
Although this is not a new research phenomenon, the literature has often associated the digital divide (second order or otherwise) with sociodemographic, sociocultural and socioeconomical factors as reasons for the digital divide. However, there is little presence in the literature into the underlying structures (physical or abstract arrangement) leading to the divide. This means that the underlying structures leading to this problem have so far been ignored and require scholarly attention. This study, therefore, identifies and explains the structures leading to the second order digital divide, a problem relating to the unequal use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) which is more prevalent in the higher education institutions (HEIs) of developing countries. Before the structures that lead to the second order digital divide could be explained the interlocking dynamics of ICT adoption needed to be identified. Structuration Theory was employed as a sensitising tool for collecting, analysing, and interpreting qualitative data for this interpretivist research. Novel qualitative data were collected from a purposive sample drawn from a single HEI of Zimbabwe, a developing country of high literacy. Directed content analysis generated insightful explanations of the structures leading to the second order digital divide at the HEI case. Preliminary analysis based on a deductive logic approach identified signification, domination, and legitimation as some of the structures leading to the second order digital divide at the HEI case. Further analysis based on an inductive logic approach revealed additional belief, institutional and governance structures which manifested from the interlocking dynamics of ICT adoption, involving resources, leadership, adoption behaviours and empowerment. These findings contributed to practice by explaining the underlying structures of the second order digital divide, for the benefit of ICT4D researchers, and by suggesting interventions to HEI policy-makers for reducing the second order digital divide. The results also make an iv explanatory contribution to theory by presenting a model of the interlocking dynamics of ICT adoption for theorising about the complex second order digital divide.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Technology: Electrical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology 2013
The demand for electrical energy has kept on increasing, thus causing power systems to be more complex and bringing the challenging problems of electrical energy generation, transmission, stability, as well as storage to be examined more thoroughly. With the advent of high-speed computation and the desire to analyze increasingly complex behaviour in power systems, simulation techniques are gaining importance and prevalence. Nevertheless, while simulations of large, interconnected complex power systems are feasible, they remain time-consuming. Moreover, the models and parameters used in simulations are uncertain, due to measurement uncertainty, the need to represent a complex behaviour with low-order models, and the inherent changing nature of the power system. This research explores the use of a model reduction technique and the applications of a Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) to reduce the uncertainty in large-scale complex power system models. The main goal of the research is to develop a reduced order model and to investigate the applications of the RTDS simulator in reduction of large, interconnected power systems models. The first stage of the study is to build and simulate the full model of the power system using the DigSILENT and RTDS simulators. The second phase is to apply model reduction technique to the full model and to determine the parameters in the reduced-order model as well as how the process of reduction increases this model uncertainty. In the third phase the results of the model reduction technique are compared based on the results of the original model - IEEE standard benchmark models has been used. The RTDS was used for comparative purposes. The thesis investigations use a particular model reduction technique as Coherency based Method. Though the method ideas are applicable more generally, a concrete demonstration of its principles is instructive and necessary. Further, while this particular technique is not relevant to every system, it does apply to a broad class of systems and illustrates the salient features of the proposed methodology. The results of the thesis can be used in the development of reduced models of complex power systems, simulation in real-time during power system operation, education at universities, and research. Life is fragile for most of us. Nihility is the basic condition in the virtual world. The friction and understanding between us、particularly our emotional conflicts and sublimation between friendly and unfriendly feelings can all be relayed in the virtual world. The absolutely truth in the world of indirect contact exists no more. Could we show our feelings from our inner world to a space that is structured by programs and electronics? Could we trust the emotion built in the virtual world? Alternatively、should we be sensitive and keep our observing attitudes to criticism? What emotion should we have when we encounter digital virtual artwork? Should we act as if we are observing a painting or closing our eyes to listen to music? Each reaction proves our Existence in the virtual world. What we need to do is to feel、not to understand. The collected literatures include an interactive feature in the digital world in the genre of 「dissent」 video and audio art. Related art works belong to related fields and cannot be classified、such as e-Literature、visual LSD、SinoLogic Arts、and Spanish COPYFIGHT. These creators are all uncommon artists who often use science and technology to express their feelings. Their exceptional style of advancing humanity can be taken as references for those who love to follow fashionable techniques. This study’s goal is to experiment with visual and sound producing mediums in order to construct feelings of alienation and provoke objective emotions thereby arousing the subjective imagination. The purpose is to improve the Quality of virtual interactive processing. The movement of the mouse will activate a response that will amuse game players. Emotional reactions bring out amusement. If we can abandon our preconceived opinions、forget imagination and only wait and reply to each interaction of joy or pain. We will then be surprised.

To confront with the rapid change of consumming pattern and characteristics of logistics, the logistic dealers'' management patterns should vary. In orderto operate effectively, to possess the superiority of competitive capacity, the logistic dealers should find out the Critical Success Factors(CSF) as to plan the management strategies. To see the change of the whole logistic envi-ronment and the trend of development conceptually, the establishment of just-in-time information system is very important. According to the assessment andanalysis of various link-patterns of information network, the present studyconsiders that the direct-linked telephone route between the customers andsuppliers can satisfy not only data security and economy of transmittal costbut also the pracitical needs of receipt and management of multiform documen-tation. As order-processing is the key point to access the information flowand order-receiving process is an early step of the order-processing, in thecourse of promotion of enterprise computerization, the importance of auto-mation of order-receiving process can not be ignored. The present study analyzed the commercial transaction process systematically and found thatbesides being had the function of receiving any kinds of orders, the order-receiving system can be given consideration to pre-marketing and post-marketing phases and be worked with MODEM which is provided with digital/FAX/ voice function well, the order-receiving system can therefore be promotedto the marketing center of automation of multi-function. As long as the fullycommon telecommunication network can be emplyed, the communication bridge between customers and suppliers can be established easily, quick-responsecapability to customers'' needs can be provided, and furthermore, the ideal ofcustomer satisfaction can also be achieved early.
