Abstract (sommario):
Endophytic fungi isolated from medicinal ferns serve as significant natural resources for drug precursors or bioactive metabolites. During our survey on the diversity of endophytic fungi from Dicranopteris species (a genus of medicinal ferns) in Guizhou, Apoiospora was observed as a dominant fungal group. In this study, seven Apiospora strains, representing four new species, were obtained from the healthy plant tissues of three Dicranopteris species—D. ampla, D. linearis, and D. pedata. The four new species, namely Apiospora aseptata, A. dematiacea, A. dicranopteridis, and A. globosa, were described in detail with color photographs and subjected to phylogenetic analyses using combined LSU, ITS, TEF1-α, and TUB2 sequence data. This study also documented three new hosts for Apiospora species.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACTAs a consequence of its relatively high productivity in primary successional sites on Mauna Loa, Hawai'i, the mat-forming fern Dicranopteris linearis can influence attributes of soil detrital pools. Decomposition, nutrient release and rates of asymbiotic N fixation in Dicranopteris litter were determined over an elevational range of oligotrophic sites. ‘Hot spots’ of nitrogen fixation occurred in Dicranopteris litter, as evidenced by acetylene reduction rates as high as 22 nmol g−1 h−1. However, potential N fixation rates for the entire litter mass were 0–0.1 g m−2 y−1, less than other N inputs such as rainfall. Dicranopteris' decomposition rates were low compared to other tropical species, even under high temperature and rainfall conditions, with ≥50% of the original leaf and >77%of the stem mass remaining after 2 y of decomposition. Slow decomposition was related to high ligninrnitrogen ratios (56–129) in litter and above-ground positioning of unabscised, decomposing litter. As a result of its slow decomposition rates, Dicranopteris is an major contributor to soil detrital pools. Aggradation of the detrital pool is an important process whereby nutrients are accrued within these ecosystems. Consequently, Dicranopteris exerts an important influence on soil genesis and ecosystem development during primary succession on pahoehoe lava.

Abstract (sommario):
Forest and land fires become serious problems in Indonesia that could not be well managed until today. This is then the reasons why there is so many activties being conducted in order to find the best solution including fire suppression method. Until today the suppresion methods mostly using water rather than other sources, which actually is not so effective and efficient. The research is proposed to make sure that Gel Pack Extinguishing Agent (GPEA) could be used for fire suppression. Three different fuels used were Pinus merkusii, Shorea leprosula, and Dicranopteris linearis at different of 55g, 65g, 75g, dan 85g. The results of research shown that GPEA with 5 small box per litter of water was the best dosage. The fastes suppression time based on the three fuels was Dicranopteris linearis, and the lowest was Pinus merkusii. Keywords: fuels, forest and land fires, Gel, suppresion methode, dosage

Abstract (sommario):
Little is known about the chemical and biological profiles of Dicranopteris linearis and Psychotria adenophylla. No previous studies have investigated alpha-glucosidase inhibition using extracts from D. linearis and P. adenophylla. In this paper, bioactive-guided isolation procedures were applied to the plants D. linearis and P. adenophylla based on alpha-glucosidase inhibition. From the most active fractions, 20 compounds (DL1–DL13 and PA1–PA7) were isolated. The chemical structures were elucidated using spectroscopic data and compared with those available in the literature. These compounds were evaluated for alpha-glucosidase inhibition, while a molecular docking study was performed to elucidate the mechanisms involved. Consequently, D. linearis and P. adenophylla might serve as a good potential for developing new antidiabetic preparations.

Abstract (sommario):
Dicranopteris linearis occupies in an open ground that contains poor soils and often colonizing disturbed space that partly shaded area. It has been known for various traditional values including medicinal, edible food, soil erosion protection, pen and furniture. Even though the plants possess both economic and medicinal value, they still form the neglected group of a plant. The present study was carried out to characterize the phenolic compounds in D. linearis leaves extract in different fractional polarities qualitative and quantitatively. Dried leaves of D. linearis were successfully extracted by using water extraction before separated by petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and butanol fractions. All the fractional extracts have been analysed by using GCTOF-MS and HPLC. The result from GCTOF-MS analysis of fractional extracts showed 38 compounds found in petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and butanol extracts. However, only four phenolic compounds were identified through HPLC analysis in ethyl acetate and butanol extracts which were 2-Methoxy-4-vinylphenol, Vanillin, 4-Hydroxybenzaldehyde and 4-Hydroxybenzohydrazide. The results revealed that D. linearis contained 699.83 ± 6.26 μg GAE /g DW of total phenolic acid whereas individual phenolic acids were predominantly caffeic acid (0.44 ± 0.01 μg/g DW) and ferulic acid (0.22 ± 0.00 μg/g DW) in ethyl acetate and caffeic acid (0.10 ± 0.00 μg/g DW) and 2-Coumaric acid (0.44 ± 0.00 μg/g DW) in butanol extracts. In the present study, the plant extracts demonstrated the highest phenolic compound detected in ethyl acetate and butanol compared to petroleum ether extract.

Abstract (sommario):
This study discusses the effect of the addition of resin fibers (Dicranopteris linearis) on the characteristics of concrete. The purpose of fibers to the characteristics of concrete. horns, anti-termite, not easily broken and resistant to humid air and is a plant that grows a lot in Pagar Alam City area. Therefore, the researchers decided to examine the effect of adding resin rod fibers to the characteristics of concrete. characteristics of this concrete is an experimental method that is tested, namely the physical material test, slump test, compressive and flexural strength of concrete. Experiments with the addition of resin rod fibers to the concrete mix of 0.5% of the weight of normal concrete cement. All samples were tested at the age of 3,7,14,21 and 28 days. Based on the test results, 3 cm and 5 cm long resin fibers were used. At 3 cm compressive strength of 28 day old concrete decreased by 0.36% from normal concrete with flexural strength increased by 0.02% of normal concrete while at 5 cm compressive strength of 28 day old concrete decreased by 0.66% of concrete normal while the flexural increase as much as 0.04% of normal concrete. The decrease in compressive strength is due to the addition of impregnated fibers into the concrete which will create more voids or voids in the concrete, the reduced density of concrete and disruption of the bond between cement and other concrete aggregates and the increase in flexural strength is caused because the resin fibers play a role in resisting cracks due to the pressure exerted by them. occurs in the concrete so as to increase the flexural strength of the concrete.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Background The fern Dicranopteris linearis is a hyperaccumulator of rare earth elements (REEs), aluminium (Al) and silicon (Si). However, the physiological mechanisms of tissue-level tolerance of high concentrations of REE and Al, and possible interactions with Si, are currently incompletely known. Methods A particle-induced X-ray emission (μPIXE) microprobe with the Maia detector, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy and chemical speciation modelling were used to decipher the localization and biochemistry of REEs, Al and Si in D. linearis during uptake, translocation and sequestration processes. Results In the roots >80 % of REEs and Al were in apoplastic fractions, among which the REEs were most significantly co-localized with Si and phosphorus (P) in the epidermis. In the xylem sap, REEs were nearly 100 % present as REEH3SiO42+, without significant differences between the REEs, while 24–45 % of Al was present as Al-citrate and only 1.7–16 % Al was present as AlH3SiO42+. In the pinnules, REEs were mainly concentrated in necrotic lesions and in the epidermis, and REEs and Al were possibly co-deposited within phytoliths (SiO2). Different REEs had similar spatial localizations in the epidermis and exodermis of roots, the necrosis, veins and epidermis of pinnae of D. linearis. Conclusions We posit that Si plays a critical role in REE and Al tolerance within the root apoplast, transport within the vascular bundle and sequestration within the blade of D. linearis.

Sofiyanti N, Iriani D, Fitmawati, Marpaung AA. 2019. Morphology, palynology, and stipe anatomy of four common ferns from Pekanbaru, Riau Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 327-336. The fern explorations had been conducted in Pekanbaru, Riau Province from 2013 to 2017. The objectives of this study were to characterize the morphological characters, to examine the spore features and stipe anatomy characters of four common ferns from Pekanbaru. The specimens were collected from the fields using the exploration method from 21 study sites from 10 sub-districts. The spores were then observed using a digital microscope. A total of four fern species were known as the most common fern species in this region, i.e., Dicranopteris linearis, Stenochlaena palustris, Nephrolepis biserrata, and Davalia denticulata. This study examined the morphology, palynology and stipe anatomy of these four common ferns from Pekanbaru, Riau. The anatomical preparation was conducted using paraffin method while spore preparation using acetolysis method. We found dimorphic ferns (Stenochlaena palustris and Davallia denticulata) and monomorphic ferns (Dicranopteris linearis and Nephrolepis biserrata). The vascular bundle of stipes of four species examined is similar, i.e., amphicribral concentric, however, the vascular bundles within the species varies in size. We also observed similar type of stele, atactostele, among the species. The spore features found in this study were monolete and trilete with prolate and subprolate shape. The result of this study supports the anatomical data of the examined species.

Abstract (sommario):
One of the causes of low oil palm production is the presence of weeds, so weed control efforts are needed. One of the weed control methods is chemical weed control using herbicides. Methyl metsulfuron herbicide is one of the active ingredients of herbicides. The aim of this study was to obtain the optimal dose of methyl metsulfuron to control wire fern weed (Dicranopteris linearis) in immature oil palm plantations. The method used was a randomized block design (RAK) with 8 levels of treatment, namely A (methyl metsulfuron 15 g.b.a/ha), B (methyl metsulfuron 50 g.b.a/ha), C (methyl metsulfuron 85 g.b.a/ha), D (methyl metsulfuron 15). g.b.a/ha + adhesive), E (methyl metsulfuron 50 g.b.a/ha+ adhesive), F (methyl metsulfuron 85 g.b.a/ha+ adhesive), G (manual weeding), H (without control and herbicide). All treatments were replicated 3 times. Parameters observed were weed mortality, weed dry weight and phytotoxicity. Data analysis used linear model variance with a significance of 5%, if there was a significant difference, it was continued with the Ducan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) further test. The results showed that the mortality of Dicranopteris linearis weeds with the herbicide methyl metsulfuron 85 g.b.a/ha was significantly different from the treatment with methyl metsulfuron 15-50 g.b.a/ha. Weed dry weight with the herbicide methyl metsulfuron 15-85 g.b.a/ha and manual control was significantly different from that without control. Weed control with methyl metsulfuron herbicide does not cause phytotoxicity.

Abstract (sommario):
Dicranopteris linearis leaf has been reported to exert antinociceptive activity. The present study elucidates the possible mechanisms of antinociception modulated by the methanol extract of D. linearis leaves (MEDL) using various mouse models. The extract (25, 150, and 300 mg/kg) was administered orally to mice for 30 min priot to subjection to the acetic acid-induced writhing-, hot plate- or formalin-test to establish the antinociceptive profile of MEDL. The most effective dose was then used in the elucidation of possible mechanisms of action stage. The extract was also subjected to the phytochemical analyses. The results confirmed that MEDL exerted significant (p < 0.05) antinociceptive activity in those pain models as well as the capsaicin-, glutamate-, bradykinin- and phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)-induced paw licking model. Pretreatment with naloxone (a non-selective opioid antagonist) significantly (p < 0.05) reversed MEDL effect on thermal nociception. Only l-arginine (a nitric oxide (NO) donor) but not N(ω)-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME; a NO inhibitor) or 1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ; a specific soluble guanylyl cyclase inhibitor) significantly (p < 0.05) modified MEDL effect on the writhing test. Several polyphenolics and volatile antinociceptive compounds were detected in MEDL. In conclusion, MEDL exerted the opioid/NO-mediated antinociceptive activity, thus, justify D. linearis as a potential source for new analgesic agents development.

Abstract (sommario):
In search for botanicals as an alternative remedy to synthetic chemicals in the pest control of tea plantations, ferns such as Adiantum raddianum, Asplenium aethiopicum, Cyclosorus interruptus, Dicranopteris linearis, Diplazium polypodioides, and Pteridium aquilinum were evaluated against the two major pests of tea, red spider mite Oligonychus coffeae Nietner and tea mosquito bug Helopeltis theivora Waterhouse, which are the foremost seasonal pests in tea fields, causing severe crop loss. Apart from synthetic chemicals, only the neem kernel extract is recommended in tea fields. The aqueous extracts of ferns were screened at different concentrations against these pests under laboratory and field conditions. The extracts of P. aquilinum and D. linearis showed good contact toxicity at a 5% concentration to O. coffeae. The acaricidal activity was observed in the order P. aquilinum > D. linearis > C. interruptus > A. raddianum > D. polypodioides > A. aethiopicum. Under field conditions, the extract of D. linearis and P. aquilinum showed a 50% reduction in the population of red spider mite and caused no phytotoxic effect to tea leaves. But their insecticidal activity was less pronounced against H. theivora. They exhibit antifeedant activity, which was sustained only for 24 hours. The photochemical screening of extracts showed a qualitatively increased level of saponins in P. aquilinum, D. linearis, and C. interruptus. The study shows that the aqueous extracts of D. linearis and P. aquilinum can be incorporated in the mite control programme in tea.

Abstract (sommario):
The occurrence and development of Benggang is closely related to the decreased shear strength of collapsing walls. Plant roots can improve the soil shear resistance, and their soil reinforcing effect is restricted by soil moisture content (SMC). However, the effect and mechanism of SMC on the shear properties of rooted soil with different soil properties remain unknown. Therefore, the dominant soil erosion-resistant plant Dicranopteris linearis was selected as the research object, and shear tests were conducted to determine the shear strength response of rooted soil to SMC in the lateritic layer (LL), sandy layer (SL) and detritus layer (DL) with SMCs from 15% to 30%. The results showed that, compared with 15% SMC, the average decrease in shear strength of 30% SMC in the LL, SL and DL rooted soil were 17.37%, 21.96% and 23.36%, respectively. The rooted soil cohesion changed with increasing SMC in a binomial function, and the optimal SMC in the LL was 22.78%, which was higher than that of the SL (19.67%) and DL (18.39%). The cohesion increment of rooted soil weakened with increasing SMC, and the decrease was greatest in the SL. When the SMC increased from 15% to 30%, the internal friction angle of the rooted soil decreased by 34%, 11% and 12% in the LL, SL and DL, respectively. The Wu and Waldron’s model (WWM) correction parameters k′¯ of the LL, SL and DL were 0.59, 0.14 and 0.05, respectively. With the modified WWM, a new prediction model for the shear strength of rooted soil based on SMC was established. In short, a high SMC weakened the mechanical effect of Dicranopteris linearis-rooted soil, especially in the SL and DL of the collapsing wall, and attention should be given to drainage facilities when treating Benggang erosion.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The infestation of weedy rice has becoming a threat which leads to competition between weedy rice and commercial rice for nutrient uptake. Weedy rice management is more dependent on the herbicides application that can contribute to various environmental problems. Thus, this study was conducted to assess the allelopathic potential of two invasive plants namely L. leucocephala and D. linearis in controlling the growth of weedy rice. The allelopathic potential was evaluated through laboratory bioassay namely the dish pack method, sandwich method and plant box method to determine the allelopathic potential on the seedling growth of two weedy rice variants collected in Peninsular Malaysia (designated as WRE and WRN) and MR220 CL2 rice variety. Highest concentration of L. leucocephala leaf litter (50 mg) inhibited the radicle elongation of MR220 CL2, WRN and WRE by 49 %, 51 % and 83 % compared to control, respectively. Through the dish pack method, the volatile compound from D. linearis leaf were found to disrupt the radicle growth of MR220 CL2, WRN and WRE by 21 %, 29 % and 25 % of the control at the nearest distance (41 mm) of the bioassay plants with the D. linearis leaf. Compared with D. linearis, the root exudate from L. leucocephala exhibited higher inhibitory effect towards the bioassay species. Overall, the findings from this study showed that the allelopathic potential of L. leucocephala was more preferable to be investigated further for sustainable weedy rice management in the future by infusing the biological approach.

Abstract (sommario):
This study aimed to determine the antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities of semi-purified aqueous partition obtained from the methanol extract of Dicranopteris linearis (AQDL) leaves against paracetamol (PCM)-induced liver intoxication in rats. The test solutions, AQDL (50, 250, and 500 mg/kg), were administered orally to rats (n = 6) once daily for seven consecutive days followed by the hepatotoxicity induction using 3 g/kg PCM (p.o.). Blood was collected for serum biochemical parameters analysis while the liver was collected for histopathological examination and endogenous antioxidant enzymes analysis. AQDL was also subjected to antioxidant determination and phytochemical analysis. Results obtained show that AQDL possessed high total phenolic content (TPC) value and remarkable radical scavenging activities. AQDL also significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the liver weight/body weight (LW/BW) ratio or serum level of ALT, AST, and total bilirubin while significantly (p < 0.05) increase the level of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) without affecting the malondialdehyde (MDA) in the liver indicating its hepatoprotective effect. Phytoconstituents analyses showed only the presence of saponins and triterpenes, but lack of flavonoids. In conclusion, AQDL exerts hepatoprotective activity via its high antioxidant potential and ability to modulate the endogenous enzymatic antioxidant defense system possibly via the synergistic action of saponins and triterpenes.

Abstract (sommario):
Selected fungi on ferns in Taiwan are described, illustrated, annotated and complemented with first DNA sequences. The ranges of distribution, host species, morphology, and the taxonomy of some species were revised. ITS rDNA sequences proved to be useful for distinguishing between species on the same host. A new species of Venustosynnema found on dead leaves of Selaginella moellendorfii differs from the other species of the genus by its small conidiomata with smooth central seta and reniform conidia. A new species of Zasmidium described on living fronds of Dicranopteris linearis is particular by its hyaline, smooth conidia. New data are derived from new collections of Pseudocercospora athyrii, Ps. cyatheae, and Ps. pteridophytophila hitherto only known from the type collections and of Mycosphaerella gleicheniae. Ps. christellae is considered a synonym of Ps. pteridophytophila. M. gleicheniae and Ps. cyatheae are new records for Taiwan.

Abstract (sommario):
In this study, the relationship between heavy metals (HMs) concentrations in soils and several weeds including Cyclosorus parasiticus, Dicranopteris linearis, Pityrogramma calomelanos, and Pteris vittata in three mining sites (Cam Gia (Thai Nguyen city), Tan Long (Dong Hy district), and Ha Thuong (Dai Tu district)) in Thai Nguyen province, Vietnam, have been investigated. The levels of HMs varied among soil origins and showed the contaminations of As, Cu, and Pb in soil samples collected in Dong Hy and Dai Tu districts. In addition, the HM distribution and cocontamination phenomena in different soils significantly affected the HM residues and transportation abilities into different species as well as tissues. Moreover, based on the analysis of bioaccumulation factor (BF) and translocation factor (TF), C. parasiticus and D. linearis were found potentially for phytoextraction by roots, while P. calomelanos and P. vittata were suitable for hyperaccumulation in shoots and leaves. Consequently, the strongest antioxidant property by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and superoxide anion (SRSA) radical scavenging assays were demonstrated in the methanol root extracts of C. parasiticus and P. vittata, respectively. In conclusion, the correlation among HM in soils and tissues with antioxidant property allows us to hypothesize that the presence of these elements can enhance the antioxidant activity of plant extracts, suggesting to apply the weeds in phytoremediation as well as in phytomedicine.
