Testo completoThe Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with its 27 kilometer in circumference is the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator. The LHC was designed to collide protons at 14 TeV energy at the center-of-mass. The design luminosity is 1034 cm2 s-1, which is achieved with 2808 circulating bunches, each with - 1011 protons. Bunches are spaced by 25ns, corresponding to a collision rate of 40 MHz at each of the four interaction points. The main priority of the European Strategy for P article Physics is the exploitation of the full potential of the LHC. An upgrade of the LHC to the high-luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) was planned for this purpose. The HL-LHC will require an upgrade of the machine and detectors with a view to collecting ten times more data than in the initial design, by around 2030. The major challenges for the high-luminosity phase are the occupancy, pile-up, high data rates, and radiation tolerance of the detectors. The increase in occupancy will be mitigated using higher granularity. Fast timing detectors with time resolution in the range of 30 ps will be used to reduce pile-up. Fur thermore , precision timing will provide additional physics capabilities. The purpose of the present thesis is the design, development and study of silicon detectors with high granularity and 30 ps time resolution suitable for the upgrade of the A Toroidal LHC Apparatus (ATLAS) experiment in the HL-LHC phase. Low Gain Avalanche Detectors (LGAD) have been proposed by RD50 collaboration as timing detectors for the Endcap Timing Layer (ETL) of ATLAS experiment. Three different strategies have been studied in order to fulfil with the high granularity, time resolution and radiation hardness specifications of devices for the ET L. The first strategy has consisted in detectors thickness reduction to decrease its collection time, rise time and intrinsic Landau noise. The second strategy has been the minimization of the capacitance developing strips and pixels with gain. Finally, the last strategy has lied in the use of other dopants to reduce radiation effects as boron removal. The structure of the thesis is as follows: chapter 2 introduces the major issues in the LHC upgrade, the CERN experiments, the required specifications of particle detectors for the HL LHC phase, their working principles, the measurement of time resolution, the microscopic and macroscopic radiation effects, and the state of the art in timing detectors; chapter 3 presents the technological and electrical simulation of the designed devices after the calibration of the technological simulation with the process characterization; chapter 4 gives an outline of the different device processes; chapter 5 presents the obtained results of unirradiated and irradiated devices; chapter 6 condenses the simulation, production and results of inverse Low Gain Avalanche Detectors (i-LGAD), and chapter 7 reports the conclusions and future work of the measured devices.

This work is based on the construction of biomimetic sensors for monitoring sensitive and selective pesticide metribuzin (MTZ). For this, the base electrodes of carbon paste and carbon nanotubes have been modified with various complex catalysts potential biomimetic of P450 enzymes, which are enzymes that catalyze a large number of reactions including pesticides. The complex profile that showed better results in biomimetic and amperometric determination of metribuzin was the ftalocianinacobalto (II) [CoPc]. When constructed sensors based on a modified carbon paste CoPc with the best results were obtained using 15% (m/ m) complex in the preparation of the folder and making the measurements in Britton-Robinson buffer 0,08 mol L-1 (pH 2,0), by applying potential to -690 mV vs Ag | AgCl. Under these conditions gave a linear response range of 2.4 x 10-5 to 2.0 x 10-4 mol L-1, and with good sensitivity and LOQ and LOD of 4,3 x 10-6 and 1 , 4 x 10-5 mol L-1, respectively. Related studies to elucidate the biomimeticidade sensor, included evaluation of the influence of scan rate using cyclic voltammetry, exploitation of hyperbolic profile of the sensor response and the study of interferences and selectivity. Next, we evaluated the influence of carbon nanotubes multi-walled (MWCNT) in the preparation of the folder in order to try to increase the detectability of the sensor modified with ftalocianinacobalto (II). However, the results were not those expected, mainly due to the large amount of binder material (Nujol ® which is an insulator) necessary for obtaining the paste. The performance of all electrodes was tested in a conventional electrochemical system, and also in two electrochemical cells using amperometric detection. The first one was constructed to operate on hydrodynamic system and the second one to work on flow injection analysis (FIA) system. Analytical curves were obtained for all systems with linear relationship from peak current vs concentration from 1.4 x 10-6 to 1.5 x 10-4 mol L-1 for aurothiomalate; 1.5 x 10-6 to 6.6 x 10-4 mol L-1 for L-dopa and 1.0 x 10-5 to 1.0 x 10-4 mol L-1 for procaine, respectively. The method was tested in pharmaceutical compounds with good recovery. Screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) can be easily modified with poly-histidine (PH) films using three different procedures: by direct addition of a poly-histidine solution on the electrode surface (SPCE/PH), using a cross-link reaction between poly-histidine and glutaraldehyde (SPCE/Glu-PH) and by electropolymerization of the histidine monomer (SPCE/EPH). The voltammetric behavior of the three modified electrodes was evaluated using potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) and ascorbic acid as model compounds. All modified electrode from stable films, but SPCE coated by deposition of PH and Glu-PH presented higher efficiency for pre concentration anions, while SPCE coated by electropolymerization of the monomer (EPH) presented pronounced electrocatalytic effect in the ascorbic acid oxidation. The resulting PH films presented good adherence and high stabilities and they were applied in the voltammetric analysis of isoniazide, pyrazinamide, aurothiomalate and chromium (VI). The best experimental condition for isoniazide and pyrazinamide...(Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Testo completoThis thesis presents the characterization of a pixel CdTe detector design for application in nuclear medicine imaging. The thesis work has been carried out within the framework of the Voxel Imaging PET (VIP) Pathfinder project. The VIP project is an ambitious project that aims to prove the feasibility of using pixelated CdTe detectors in nuclear medicine imaging. The proposed design is the VIP module, which consists of slabs of CdTe of 10 mm x 10 mm surface and 2 mm thickness, which are segmented into pixels of 1 mm x 1 mm. Each CdTe diode is readout by the VIP-PIX, an ASIC developed by the VIP project which others smart readout per pixel and provides the energy measurement and the timestamp for each detection. The work presented in this thesis is the characterization of the performance of three different setups to validate the behavior of the VIP module. One of the steps consists of the measurement of the energy resolution and the coincidence time resolution for a CdTe coplanar detector of 2 mm thickness. In the second step the charge sharing between pixels has been measured. A setup with a CdTe diode readout by the VATAGP7.1 has been used. The e ect of the charge sharing on the energy resolution of the pixels has been studied as well. Finally, the performance of a CdTe diode readout by a VIP-PIX ASIC has been evaluated. The performance of the VIP-PIX electronics has been characterized and the energy resolution of the CdTe pixels has been measured. The thesis consists of 7 chapters. Chapter 1 is about the physics behind radiation detection, especially focused on gamma detection. Chapter 2 is about nuclear medicine, the techniques used and the state-of-the-art of nuclear medicine scanner devices. Chapter 3 is about the VIP project, it shows the details of the VIP design, the goals achieved so far, and the targets for the end of the project. Chapters 4, 5, and 6 show each of the three stages of experiments carried out in the thesis. Chapter 4 shows the energy resolution and coincidence time resolution of a single pixel detector with 2 mm thickness. Chapter 5 shows the measurement of charge sharing for a pixel detector with pixels of 2 mm x 1 mm and its effect on the energy resolution. Chapter 6 shows the measurement of the energy resolution for a pixelated CdTe diode readout by the VIP-PIX ASIC, which has pixels of 1 mm x 1 mm. Chapter 7 presents the conclusions achieved with the three analyses and puts them in the context of the radiation detection science for medical imaging.

Testo completoIn this work we constructed a new versatile Bridgman crystal growth furnace that can operate to 2.000 °C in high vacuum or in inert atmospheres. Since the most important post-growth problem in this technique is related with the adherence between crystal-crucible, we also developed an initial materials-treatment system that could prevent this phenomenon, by previously saturating with HI gas. These procedures allowed us to get clear and high quality NaI(Tl) cylindric single crystals up to 60mm length and 20mm diameter. Using the Czochralski technique, we also grew several clear NaI(Tl) single crystals with dimensions up to 50 mm length and 30 mm diameter. A method to prevent the excess of Iodine in the liquid phase during the crystal growth process is also described. Optical absorption measurements in NaI(Tl) single crystals, at room and liquid nitrogen temperatures, show characteristic Thallium bands near 304, 291, 257, 249 and 236 nm. Through the relationship between optical density of the absorption band at 304 nm and Thallium concentration, we could estimate the concentration profile through the entire crystal, grown by each method: Bridgman and Czochralski. By fluorescence spectroscopy we also find, at room temperature, one emission band near to 425 nm. Radiation detector prototypes were developed to evaluate the energy resolution of the single crystals grown by Bridgman and Czochralski methods. The performance of the radiation detectors is also analyzed

This study describes the production and characterization of polymer brushes thin films build on indium tin oxide substrate (ITO) in order to study the stimuli-responsive properties that lead to structural changes of the films. To characterize the surfaces atomic microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray and atomic force microscopy techniques were used. The influence of pH and ionic strength were evaluated by electrochemical methods and localized surface plasmon resonance (L-SPR). The polymers ply (acrylic acid) - (PAA), poly (2-vinyl pyridine) - (P2VP), poly (2-dimethyl amino ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) and the mixture P2VP with PAA were used to construct the brush films. Electrochemical tests showed a dependence of the polymer brushes conformation with ionic strengh and pH. P2VP and PDMAEMA had better response at acidic pH, since the polymer chains were extended and positively charged, allowing the diffusion of the negatively charged redox species through the film to the electrode surface. Not intituitively, PAA polymer film also showed a better amperometric response in acid pH, when their chains were collapsed on the surface. This curious response was because the redox species used in the tests were charged negatively, occurring thus electrostatic repulsion between the PAA negatively streched chains (basic pH) and the negatively charged redox specie, thus leading to a major signal in acidic pH where the PAA brushes were neutral. The results obteined by electrochemistry were corroborated usign L-SPR assays. It was also possible to obtain the sensitivity value due to pH variation using L-SPR measurements. P2VP showed the highest sensibility: for each pH unit, 1 unitis wavelength were shifted. Amorphous metals have been shown to have magnetomechanical properties which are superior to those of any other magnetic materials. This has allowed their usage in a growing number of sensing purposes. The capacity of remotely interrogating the resonant frequency of amorphous material stripes trough magnetic fields allows their application as sensor in situations that do now allow direct contact with the measurement surface. This quality may be useful for the monitoring of risers that bring petrol from deep sea to platforms on the surface. The resonant frequency of the stripes is a function of, alongside other properties, the intensity of the magnetic field in which they are inserted. Thus, a substrate’s deformation may be monitored trough the use of a transducer in him affixed, which magnetizes as the substrate deforms, consequently altering the magnetic field imposed over the resonator, and its resonant frequency. In this work, the construction of a magnetoelastic strain sensor is investigated, where a polycrystalline FeAlB alloy was used as transducer, and amorphous materials, by the commercial name of Metglas 2826 MB3 and 1K501, were used as resonators. The Fe80Al20 alloy, with 2%at. B, was shown to have an 80 ppm magnetostriction, which inspired its use as transducer, which enabled the substitution of the amorphous ribbons previously used. A testing bench, capable of applying mechanical stress to a brass substrate, was built with the goal of teste the sensibility of the magnetoelastic sensor to strain. A highly linear behavior of the sensor’s resonant frequency to the applied stress on the brass substrate was observed, with Gauge Factors of 120 for the sensors that used Metglas 2826 MB3 and 1K501 as resonators, respectively. This result instigated the exploration of the magnetoelastic sensor’s applicability on ferromagnetic surfaces. Finally, mechanical stress tests were conducted, in which the deformation of the SAE 1010 steel substrate were simultaneously monitored by the magnetoelastic sensor, and a Strain Gauge. The resonant frequency of the sensor is this test showed a sigmoidal form, with a nearly linear region. The monitoring of a riser with this device is feasible

Window sizes of such a system will also be fixed beforehand but they will be different from each other. Therefore, one of the windows will better match the signal duration, giving better detection results. In this study, multiple window detectors are analyzed. Their false alarm and detection probability relations are investigated. Some exact and approximate values are derived for these probabilities. A rule of thumb for the choice of window lengths is suggested for the case of fixed number of windows. Detectors with overlapping window structure are considered for the signals with unknown delay. Simulation results are added for these types of detectors.

Testo completoThe current network of three terrestrial interferometric gravitational wave detectors have observed ten binary black holes and one binary neutron star to date in the frequency band from 10 Hz to 5 kHz. Future detectors will increase the sensitivity by up to a factor of 10 and will push the sensitivity band down to lower frequencies. However, observing sources lower than a few Hz requires going into space where the interferometer arms can be longer and where there is no seismic noise. A new 100 km space detector, TianGO, sensitive to the frequency band from 10 mHz to 100 Hz is described. Through its excellent ability to localize sources in the sky, TianGO can use binary black holes as standard candles to help resolve the current tension between measurements of the Hubble constant. Furthermore, all of the current and future detectors, on both the ground and in space, are limited by quantum shot noise at high frequencies, and some will be limited by quantum radiation pressure at low frequencies as well. Much effort is made to use squeezed states of light to reduce this quantum noise, however classical noise and losses severely limit this reduction. One would ideally design a gravitational wave transducer that, using its own ability to generate ponderomotive squeezing due to the radiation pressure mediated interaction between the optical modes of the light and the mechanical modes of the mirrors, approaches the fundamental limits to quantum measurement. First steps in this direction are described and it is shown that it is feasible that a large scale 40 m interferometer can observe this ponderomotive squeezing in the near future. Finally, a method of removing the effects of the vacuum fluctuations responsible for the quantum noise in gravitational wave detectors and its application to testing for the presence of deviations from general relativity is described.

Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) are a promising technology for long-distance optical communication and quantum information processing. Recent advances in single-photon generation, storage and detection technologies have spurred interest in integration of these components onto a single microchip, which would act as a low-power non-classical optical processor. In this thesis, I will present a method for the scalable integration of SNSPDs with photonic chips. I will show that, using a micron-scale flip-chip process, waveguide-coupled SNSPDs can be integrated onto a variety of material systems with high yield. This technology enabled the assembly of the first photonic chip with multiple adjacent SNSPDs with average system detection efficiencies beyond 10%. Using this prototype, we will show the first on-chip detection of non-classical light. I will further demonstrate optimizations to the detector design and fabrication processes. These optimizations increased the direct fabrication yield and improved the timing jitter to 24 ps for detectors with high internal efficiency. Furthermore, I will show a novel single-photon detector design that may have the potential to reach photodetection dead times below 1ns.

Testo completoThe ATLAS experiment at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN), Geneva, has been taking data successfully since the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator started operations in 2010. Since then, it has been generating proton-proton collisions to study the frontiers of particle physics, at a centre of mass energy of 7-8 TeV first and, more recently, 13 TeV. However, the experiment is in constant evolution: detectors ageing due to radiation damage, increasing collision rates and pile-up, and new scientific objectives often require upgrades of the ATLAS detectors. These ever-growing challenges motivate the continued research and development of new detector technologies. To enhance the physics search of the experiment the ATLAS collaboration recently added a forward detector to identify intact protons that emerge from LHC collisions at very shallow angles. The ATLAS Forward Proton (AFP) detector enables the identification of diffractive processes and, ultimately, of central exclusive events, thus allowing, for example, the search of new heavy resonances in clean events. AFP consists of silicon trackers installed very close to the LHC proton beam and at ~210 m from the interaction point (IP) at each side of ATLAS, in addition to Time-of-Flight detectors for pile-up removal. AFP needs the silicon tracker to fulfil challenging radiation hardness, spatial resolution and active area requirements. The novel 3D pixel sensor technology, first employed in the ATLAS Insertable B-Layer, was further developed and qualified for AFP. The “one-armed AFP detector”, on which this thesis is focused, refers to the stage in which the AFP detector consisted only of silicon trackers in one side of ATLAS, installed at the beginning of 2016. The full installation was successfully finished one year later, when both silicon trackers and Time-of-Flight detectors were installed in both sides of ATLAS. This thesis describes the full process of technology characterization of the silicon tracker, production, installation, operation and particle physics data analysis of the one-armed AFP detector.

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is currently implementing a major upgrade of the 27-kilometre Large Hadron Collider (LHC), with the aim to expand the physics reach, increasing the luminosity and triggering the consequent multiplication of interactions per bunch crossing. The new High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) operational conditions will have a direct impact in the silicon tracking sensors of the main detectors, the ATLAS and CMS experiments, causing a large increase of detector occupancy and radiation damage. This PhD thesis investigates the design and optimization of a new generation of silicon strip detectors able to withstand the severe operational conditions expected for the HL-LHC upgrade. Firstly, the study tackles the development of the silicon strip detectors from a layout design point of view. Basic device elements are presented and its design is discussed based on performance considerations. A new python-based Automatic Layout Generation Tool (ALGT) is presented, with the aim to address the need for large area prototypes of strip detectors at the R&D stages of the ATLAS Inner-Tracker (ITk) upgrade. The ALGT is used to design a large area strip sensor prototype, several miniature sensors and diodes. These devices are generated, and arranged in a full 6-inch wafer layout design, for the participation of Infineon Technologies AG in the ATLAS ITk strip sensor Market Survey. In addition, layout designs of a wide range of microelectronic test structures with different applications are presented. A set of test structures for the development of strip technologies is proposed, along with a test chip able to cover all the routine tests planned for the Quality Assurance (QA) works during the ATLAS strip sensor production. On the other hand, in order to improve the readout connection, several designs of Embedded Pitch Adaptors (EPA) are also proposed to minimize the possible drawbacks associated to the introduction of a second metal layer on the sensor structure. An extensive characterization is performed in the frame of the ATLAS ITk strip sensor Market Survey. Devices fabricated by the candidate foundries, Infineon Technologies AG and Hamamatsu Photonics K.K., are evaluated before and after proton, neutron and gamma irradiations, up to fluences expected at the end of the HL-LHC lifetime. Test structures and QA test chips designed are also characterized, with the objective to validate its design, expand the technology evaluation and provide reference values for the ATLAS production tests. Additional studies and developments are presented with application in High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments in general. Hot topics, such as the humidity sensitivity of large area sensors or the effectiveness of the punch-through protection in a beam-loss scenario, are extensively investigated. A complete study of the new EPA structures proposed, and results of the first strip sensors fabricated in 6-inch wafers at Centro Nacional de Microelectrónica (IMB-CNM), are also shown. The layout designs and characterizations presented, contribute to define the final design of the ATLAS strip sensors for the HL-LHC upgrade, and the additional investigations reveal conclusions of general interest that can lay the foundation for future developments.

Testo completoThis work proposes a biotelemetric method to determine simultaneously two electrical characteristics (modulated by physiological parameters) from a passive injectable RLC microcircuit. Due to the presence of free ions inside the biological tissue, inductive links (loop antennas) must be employed, instead of dipole antennas. As the coil of the sensor presents small dimensions (diameter of about mm) its magnetic coupling to the monitoring device requires special attention. To monitor the sensor, a digital device assembled with a group of coils to maximize the mutual inductance (at a distance of 5 mm) between them was developed, detecting its resonance frequencies and the respective amplitude (through a frequency sweep) in real-time. The electrical response acquired by the detector from the sensor was analytically modeled. The model indicates a time constant to consider for each change of the signal frequencies to prevent errors in the response. From that theoretical model, an equation to determine the total resistance from the RLC circuit was obtained and confirmed by experiments. Then, a method to determine the resonance frequency and the total resistance from remote RLC circuit was proposed. A sensor was developed to verify the accuracy and the limits from this method. A parallel RLC circuit was built inside a silicone rubber tube. When the tube is stretched, a ferrite rod assembled beside the inductor is displaced varying the resonance frequency and, changing the environmental temperature, a NTC varies the quality factor of the circuit. Tests using the proposed method to monitor the sensor were realized. Errors small than 0.57 % in the resonance frequencies and 0.77 % in the temperature were obtained. The measured influence of the temperature variation over frequency determination was less than 0.16 %, indicating that the method is feasible.
