Testo completoUlysses Simpson Kay (1917-1995) was an African American composer, conductor, and professor. His compositional output contains more than 135 works that have been performed, recorded, and have earned him several awards, fellowships, and commissions. This document includes a descriptive analysis of three works for flute by Ulysses Kay: Prelude for Unaccompanied Flute, Suite for Flute and Oboe, and Aulos for Solo Flute and Orchestra.
The purpose of this study is to increase awareness of Kay's flute repertoire, to stimulate more frequent programming, to provide relevant historical information about these works and resolve discrepancies surrounding incorrect data. The discussion will provide flutists and teachers with a descriptive analysis that contains suggestions for performance practice. The procedures used closely examine the musical elements of tonality, pitch, rhythm, timbre, texture and form. This analysis will help flutists understand the historical context in which these works were written, and can assist in developing a clearer interpretation, yielding a more authentic performance. At the conclusion of each discussion, performance notes will provide a summary of technical challenges for the flutist, and recommendations for teachers to facilitate selecting appropriate repertoire for their students.
This investigation also includes an interview conducted with renowned flutist John Solum, the commissioning artist of the Aulos. Solum worked closely with the composer and has performed all of Kay's works for flute. The interview serves as a source of historical information and performance practice interpretations as told by one of the last living flutists to have worked personally with the composer. As there is very little written material surrounding Kay's compositions for flute, this study will serve to augment the current research concerning African American composers of flute literature.

Testo completoFrom the first linguistic works on Kimbundu, a Bantu language coded as H20 according to Guthries zone classification (1948), there has been a lack of detailed and reliable information about the elements comprising its prosodic structure, and its phonology altogether. This gap has instigated my conducting a detailed description of both segmental and prosodic phonology of Kimbundu within the research framework for African languages set forth by the Linguistics Department of the University of São Paulo, and whose results make up this Ph.D. dissertation. Based on four regiolects represented by five native Kimbundu speakers, this descriptive study covers phenomena which can be found in the segmental and prosodic structure of this language, such as vowel harmony, phonetic alternations in the setup of the syllable structure, vowel quality changes, segment deletion, and the direction and range of consonantal feature and phonological tone spreading. Finally, the study of prosodic sandhi corroborates that Kimbundu makes use of different distinctive pitches only on a paradigmatic perspective, which proves true the claim that this is a tonal language. I strongly believe that this description work can be used to shed light upon Kimbundu on further research on African languages, in addition to updating the prospect studies of this language within linguistic theories.

Testo completoThe aim of this study is double: bringing to know a not yet edited text and this through the most faithful possible transcription of a manuscript selected as an authentic historic witness to the plan of the literary history but also the given state of language. The systematic transcription of the text thus serves to bring to light certain linguistic practices of the scribe. On the one hand; we observe graphic uses which exceed the phonogrammic function, recognized originally as essential, to achieve a morphogrammic use emphasized by specific written forms which crea the recurrence of grammatical and lexical morphemes ; on the other hand, micro-systems appear through the original use of sequences and graphic segmentations which, in this manuscript, proceed very often from a reflexive movement. These observations are leading to think that a "grammar" of French goes back up beyond the XVth century. We would thus reveal in the case of this scribe an onset of grammatical reflection on the “writing procedures” of his manuscript which would announce the “theorization of French”, characteristic of the XVth and especially of XVIth centuries. While it is situated well before any form of standard prescriptive, this manuscript, which beside more traditional linguistic practices (XIIth-XIIIth centuries) sets up a certain number of micro-systems in the functioning of written forms as well as in that of the " graphic sequences ", announces nevertheless some of the principles which will lead to the normed codification of French. From this point of view, this manuscript allows to reveal the existence of a continuum in the history of the handwritten practices of French, registering this study in the perspectives of contemporary research on the French Diachrony

Testo completoAlthough they are widely used, classical vibration measurements have several limitations. Vibration analysis can only identify about 60% of the defects that may occur in mechanical systems. However, the main drawbacks of vibration measurements are the difficult access to the transmission system in order to place the sensor as well as the consequent cost of implementation. This results in sensitivity problems relative to the position of the installation and the difficulty to distinguish the source of vibration because of the diversity of mechanical excitations that exist in the industrial environment.Hence, the Motor Current Signatures Analysis (M.C.S.A.) represents a promising alternative to the vibration analysis and has therefore been the subject of increasing attention in recent years. Indeed, the analysis of electrical signatures has the advantage of being a technically accessible method as well as inexpensive and non-intrusive to the system. Techniques based on currents and voltages only require the motor’s electrical measurements which are often already supervised for the purposes of the control and the protection of the electrical machines. This process was mainly used for the detection of motors faults such as rotor bars breakage and eccentricity faults as well as bearings defects. On the other hand, very little research has been focused on gear faults detection using the current analysis. In addition, three-phase electrical signals are characterized by specific geometric representations related to their waveforms and they can serve as different indicators providing additional information. Among these geometric indicators, the Park and Concordia transforms model the electrical components in a two-dimensional coordinate system and any deviation from the original representation indicates the apparition of a malfunction. Moreover, the differential equations of Frenet-Serret represent the trajectory of the signal in a three-dimensional euclidean space and thus indicate any changes in the state of the system. Although they have been previously used for bearing defects, these indicators have not been applied in the detection of gear defects using the analysis of electrical current signatures. Hence, the innovative idea of combining these indicators with signal processing techniques, as well as classification techniques for gears diagnosis using the three-phase motor’s electrical current signatures analysis is established.Hence, in this work, a new approach is proposed for gear faults diagnosis using the motor currents analysis, based on a set of geometric indicators (Park and Concordia transforms as well as the properties of the Frenet-Serret frame). These indicators are part of a specifically built fault signatures library and which also includes the classical indicators used for a wide range of faults. Thus, a proposed estimation algorithm combines experimental measurements of electrical signals with advanced signal processing methods (Empirical Mode Decomposition, ...). Next, it selects the most relevant indicators within the library based on feature selection algorithms (Sequential Backward Selection and Principal Component Analysis). Finally, this selection is combined with non-supervised classification (K-means) for the distinction between the healthy state and faulty states. It was finally validated with a an additional experimental configuration in different cases with gear faults, bearing faults and combined faults with various load levels

Nowadays, the world is flat and connected. In a connected world, people are inevitably related to any event that is occurring around the globe. Furthermore a variety of environmental issues spurred by globalization that demand our serious attention, such as: global warming; climate change; habitat destruction; land exploitation; unbalanced ecosystems; erratic weather patterns; costal tidal shifts; and, global food supply just to name a few. By looking at increasing expansions of human activities into the natural environment we realize that any human action could create substantial impacts on the natural environment, which is also our living world. Therefore, the artist chose the theme “Stream” for his artwork exhibit. The artist embraces the idea of the motion of water to showcase the themed images and utilizes clay as the material to display his artistic concept. He applies his expertise in the material, clay, to establish an interaction channel with audience while seeking common ground between the integrated heterogeneous elements (water vs. earth) in the process of creating his artworks. 1. Origin of concepts: The artist conducts self-examination from his own experience. Wondering how it would impact human life when people are so used to take the nature for granted. 2. Reference documents review: Study diversified perspectives in the eastern and western culture on the environmental awareness and “human vs. nature” matters. During this process of exploring, the artist also contemplates how it could be consociated with art. He starts from reviewing impacts of human activities on the nature and environment. Then he follows by examining the origin of “stream” and its meaning to feng shui. Finally, he constructs the formation and design of the artwork. 3. Creativity strategies: In order to correspond to human’s introspection to environmental issues, the artist not only combines concepts from the materials - “water” and “earth (clay)” with subjects that people concern – the nature of “change” and revival, but also reflects the popularity of feng-shui ceramics products as he employs the theme “Stream” in his artwork. 4. Artwork analysis and interpretations: Describe the art work, including the artist’s techniques, analyze the elements of the work, and interpret its meaning for each individual artwork. 5. Conclusion: Review and looking-forward.
Pelicano, Ana Carolina Lavos. "The impact of wine label’s sensory descriptions in the consumers’ purchasing decision and consumer experience". Master's thesis, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/136795.
Testo completoThe wine market is saturated and with increased diversity in styles, brands and prices, the wine purchase decision is difficult, and the consumer might get lost. When consumers are shopping for wine, they face a bewildering array of products bearing a wide range of information and since the consumers cannot usually taste the wine before purchase, they must make their decision based on the available information on the label of the bottle or past decisions. This investigation aims to demonstrate how the tasting note sometimes available on the label, will influence the wine drinking experience as well as the impact that the labels have on the evaluation of quality and desire of the wine. These characteristics determine the consumer's purchase intention based on the design of the label and its respective sensory descriptions. Understanding the consumers and what motivates them is the key to any marketing strategy and wine producers need to know how consumer involvement impacts their decision to purchase wine. To carry out this investigation, a questionnaire was developed. Two hundred responses were considered in a survey with two different scenarios, the two versions were randomly assigned among the participants. The objective was to understand how the sensory description (tasting note) influenced the answers. The study reveals that when consumers know a priori the flavors present in a certain bottle of wine, it changes the way people appreciate it, it makes the experience more exciting for consumers. From the analysis of the results, it is possible to conclude that the presence of detailed sensory descriptions on the labels will allow people to more easily choose the wine they want to consume. Consumers want to be guided in the discovery of the wine flavors to facilitate future purchase decisions.

Cerca il testo completoTwo research studies, presented in this dissertation, focus on assessing the effects of monetary incentives, fixed budget, type of design space exploration, and the availability of system-wide information on information acquisition decisions. The first study presented in this dissertation investigates information acquisition by an individual designer when multiple information sources are available and the total budget is limited. The results suggest that the student subjects' decisions are better represented by the heuristic-based models than the expected utility(EU)-based models.
While the EU-based models result in better net payoff, the heuristic models used by the subjects generate better design performance. The results also indicate the potential for nudging designers' decisions towards maximizing the net payoff by setting the fixed budget at low values and providing monetary incentives proportional to the saved budget.
The second study investigates information acquisition through communication. The focus is on designers’ decisions about whom to communicate with, and how much to communicate when there is interdependence between subsystems being designed. This study analyzes team communication of NASA engineers at a mission design laboratory (MDL) as well as of engineering students designing a simplified automotive engine in an undergraduate classroom environment. The results indicate that the rate of interactions increases in response to the reduce in system-level design performance in both settings. Additionally, the following factors seem to positively influence communication decisions: the pairwise design interdependence, node-wise popularity (significant with NASA MDL engineers due to large team size), and pairwise reciprocity.
The dissertation work increases the knowledge about engineering design decision making in following aspects. First, individuals make information acquisition decisions using simple heuristics based on in-situ information such as available budget amount and present system performance.
The proposed multi-discipline approach proves helpful for describing heuristics analytically and inferring context-specific decision strategies using statistical Bayesian inference. This work has potential application in developing decision support tools for engineering design. Second, the comparison of communication patterns between student design teams and NASA MDL teams reveals that the engine experiment preserves some but not all of the communication patterns of interest. We find that the representativeness depends not on matching subjects, tasks, and context separately, but rather on the behavior that results from the interactions of these three dimensions. This work provides lessons for designing representative experiments in the future.
