Testo completoUnderstanding the intricate process of dust deposition and accurately predicting its rate on photovoltaic (PV) modules, often referred to as soiling, holds the key to optimizing field operations. This thesis presents a comprehensive study on particle transport and deposition in turbulent flows, with a specific focus on soiling phenomena affecting solar panels. The research spans across multiple domains, from the analysis of particle dynamics in turbulent channel flow to the exploration of dust transport by the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) and its subsequent deposition on solar panels. In addition, the study involved the collection and analysis of dust samples, alongside measurements of wind speed and particle concentration in a given site.Firstly, outdoor experiments revealed that particles with a diameter of U+002410~mu mU+0024 significantly dominate the soiling process. Furthermore, our analysis identified calcite as the primary constituent of these particles. From these measurements data, particle deposition is mainly governed by turbulence and gravity effects. The modeling approach involved the adoption of the Euler-Lagrange formalism and the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) U+0024k-epsilonU+0024 turbulence model in OpenFOAMU+0024^circledRU+0024. Turbulent fluid-particle interactions accounted via a dispersion model. In this study we adopt a wall-modelled approach (wall-cell dimensionless height U+0024y_h^+gg 1U+0024), as a results, accurate particle dispersion and deposition becomes challenging as particles see a coarse description of the boundary layer. The study then explores particle dispersion and deposition in turbulent channel flows, examining vertical and horizontal configurations, and the limitations of current models in accurately predicting deposition rates. This leads to the implementation of a Lagrangian stochastic wall deposition model, showing improved alignment with experimental observations. An outdoor validation case on a horizontal PV panel is used and the corresponding deposition results are compared with experiments. The model shows an overall good agreement with the experiments. A parametric study is performed to study the effect of the ABL wind speed, wind direction and dust particle size
