Abstract (sommario):
Research into the nature and function of curricular matters in applied geography has provided an opportunity to assess the penetration and relative importance of geospatial technology to the discipline of geography. Departments of Geography with degree programs in applied geography were surveyed to find out how important geospatial technology was in the preparation of students for meaningful jobs and careers. The Applied Geography Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers (AAG) was also surveyed about the value of geospatial technology, as was the 95 academic programs that listed applied geography as a “program specialty” in the AAG Guide to Geography Programs in the Americas. There was a uniform agreement across these various groups that geospatial technology occupied an extremely important position in their overall course offerings, and if you are watching the workplace, such courses are not only sensible but offer critical employable skills for students upon graduation. It is widely known that geospatial technology education and training require a large commitment of departmental resources, including faculty lines, equipment expenditures, space, and technical support. A geography department and its university’s administration have to understand these unique requirements and allocate resources, more akin to a computer science department than a traditional academic unit. This reality is of immediate importance to geography departments because almost one quarter of all academic jobs advertised in geography over the last six years have been in the broad area of geospatial technology. A final conclusion to this research is a policy matter that suggests geography departments take a strong proprietorial position toward providing education in geospatial technology because other disciplines and training programs see opportunities in a rapidly expanding workplace skill and they are aggressively pursuing a niche of their own.

Abstract (sommario):
The history of geographical education and science at Lviv University is considered. The Austrian scientist Beltazar Hacquet should be considered the forerunner of geography at the university. In 1882, Emperor Franz Joseph issued an order to establish a geography department at the university's philosophy faculty, and in 1883, the education of geographers began. In 1911, the geography department was called the Institute of Geography, and later again the department. In 1945, the faculty of geography was created with four departments: general and physical geography, regional physical geography, economic geography, and geodesy and cartography. The bibliographic data of famous scientists who worked at the geography faculty in different years are presented. The formation and development of geography at Lviv University is associated with such famous figures as Antony Reman, Hryhoriy Velychko, Stepan Rudnytskyi, Yuriy Polyanskyi, Olena Stepaniv, Petro Tsis, Kalenyk Gerenchuk, Opanas Vashchenko, Havrylo Miller, Fedir Zastavnyi, Anatoliy Melnyk, Bohdan Mukha, Myron Kit, Semen Kukurudza, Oleg Shablii, Yaroslav Kravchuk, and others. The history of the formation and development of structural divisions of the Faculty of Geography is described. Currently, the faculty is a powerful educational and scientific institution that includes nine departments: geoecology and physical geography, economic and social geography, geomorphology and paleogeography, rational use of natural resources and protection of nature, geography of Ukraine, soil science and geography of soils, constructive geography and cartography, tourism, and hotel and restaurant business and food technologies. The educational process is provided by 116 lecturers, of whom 16 are doctors of science, professors and 86 candidates of science, associate professors. For their significant personal contribution to the development of geographical education and science, many teachers received the honorary titles of “Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine”, “Honored Worker of Education of Ukraine”, “Honored Professor of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv”. Abstract (sommario):
Historical geography and urban historical geography barely exist as sub-disciplinary idioms in geography department curricula across Canada. Yes, historical geography research flourishes, but the teaching of historical and urban historical geography has all but vanished, except in a tiny number of larger departments. This article asks why—especially given historical geography’s sub-disciplinary commitment to social and environmental justice. But it also wonders whether this circumstance is lamentable, or simply more of the same: change over time, which historical and urban historical geographers document ceaselessly.

Abstract (sommario):
"The setting up of the Geography Department and its Institute within the Faculty of Sciences at the Upper Dacia University of Cluj. On 16 August 1919, the University Board, the organ created for the organization and employment of teaching staff for the Upper Dacia University of Cluj after its transition to Romanian administration (12 May 1919), presented and proposed the organisational chart by departments, seminars, laboratories and institutes of the future Faculty of Sciences, by means of the Board rapporteurs, scientists Gheorghe Țițeica, Ludovic Mrazec and Alexandru Borza. At the express request of professor George Vâlsan, the tertiary geographical education was also included in this Faculty, as an independent department, the Department of Geography, consisting of two sections and an Institute of Geography. This was a new situation, different from the study of Geography at the universities in Iași and Bucharest. The organisational chart of Cluj University, made according to the ”German model”, was kept until the Stalinist reform of the Romanian education on 3 August 1948. By means of suggestive examples, the main Romanian university institutions newly-created at Cluj University are illustrated and described, some of them under the auspices of the Royal Foundations, such as the Astronomic Observatory and the Institute of Chemistry and Physics, as well as others, like the Sports Park, the new Botanical Garden with the Botanic Museum, the Palace of University Clinics, the Academic College and the Ethnographic Park and Museum. The materialization of George Vâlsan’s concept regarding the study of Geography and its relations to the other departments of Cluj University, as well as the their scientific and logical foundation within the double specialization, are extensively presented, as a proof of the scientist’s determination to lay solid grounds to the Romanian tertiary geographical education at Cluj University. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. In early summer 1980, radical geography students rallied around the slogan „Geografe nüme schlafe!“ („Geographers, stop sleeping!“) to take part in the radical youth movement that shook the city of Zurich at that time. In turn, these activist students brought these struggles back into the university and the geography department, where they confronted the professorate with their demands for a new curriculum. This paper argues that the antagonistic Stimmung, in which these struggles took place, produced a radical „thought style“ that flourished in a specific constellation of „thought events“: a prominent theory seminar in 1980, the AK WissKri, a network of radical geography students, the „Geoscope“ journal and, finally, a number of diploma theses on feminist, urban and historical geography. In these thought events, a radical geography materialized outside and beyond the mainstream of German language geography. Building on archival material and narrative interviews, this paper documents these student initiatives for a radical geography, and illustrates the precarious conditions of possibility of radical geography, in Zurich, and beyond.

Abstract (sommario):
The ability to think spatially in geography learning is essential, so it requires technology-based learning resources in the form of google earth, which can facilitate students in imagining or visualizing images in mind. In this regard, this study aims to determine the effect of the use of google earth on the spatial thinking abilities of students in the class X Geography of SMA PGRI 2 Palembang. This study used an experimental research method (Posttest-Only Control Design), because this design is suitable to use if the pre-test is not possible or pre-test can influence the experimental. The sample data collection technique uses Purposive Sampling, which is based on considerations or criteria that must be met by the sample used in the study. The sample in this study is class X IPS 1 as the experimental class and X IPS 2 as the control class. Data collection techniques use documentation and tests. For data analysis techniques, normality test, homogeneity test, and hypothesis testing using the IBM SPSS Statistics 20 formula for Windows. Based on the results of the study, the average value of the experimental class's superior post-test was 82.92, and the results of the posttest control class were 66.39. It shows that there are differences in the spatial thinking ability of the experimental group students who were treated using Google Earth during the learning process. The significance of the results of the posttest t-test from the two experimental and control groups was 0.000, and then the null hypothesis Ho was declared rejected because based on the t-test criteria, the significance value was <0.05 or the Sig (2-tailed) value of 0,000 was obtained <0.05. So it can be concluded that there is a significant influence between the use of google earth on the spatial thinking ability of students in the class X Geography subject of SMA PGRI 2 Palembang. Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the research is to evaluate the performance of fourth grade students in departments of Geography in drawing geographical maps and identifying geographical phenomena in a precise scientific manner, with emphasis on the need to use (map elements) in drawing. The map of Iraq was the sample used in the research. The researcher adopted the field study (tests) in the department of Geography in three colleges at University of Baghdad, namely (Arts, Education (Ibn Rushd), and Education for Girls). The sample size was about (125) students in each department, so the total number of students was (375) students, which contributed to give a clear picture about students' performance. The main point at which the research reached is that there are good aspects in drawing maps and identifying geographical phenomena, but not at the required level. Still some other aspects are met with a great failure due to a number of reasons such as adopting old methods, the lack of financial support, and the lack of new scientific programs which contribute in raising the level of students' performance in drawing maps. Another reasons why students are not at the required level is ascribed to the fact of not adopting the tests in drawing maps, and also the absence of specialized professors as in the Department of Geography (College of Education for Girls).

The study aims at studying gender differences in the ways male and female students take turns and participate in a mixed-gender classroom. Two groups of first-year English compulsory classes held at two different departments (Geography and Economics) at the University of Karachi took part in the study. The results revealed that in the Geography Department, where there was a female teacher, male students were more dominating as compared to the female students who hardly participated in the class. They took more turns and participated better in the classroom discussion. In addition, they also interrupted the teacher and the female counterparts when they tried to contribute to the discussion. On the other hand, at the Department of Economics, female students had more number of turns. They dominated the classroom as compared to the male students. Besides, the study revealed that the gender of the teacher played an important part in shaping the discourse taking place in the classroom.

Abstract (sommario):
In the context of reforming secondary and high school education in Ukraine, the geographic education of the region and the country as a whole should be considered as a system that includes initial, basic, preprofessional and professional level. Currently, there is no overall picture of the status and trends of development of the various segments of geographic education in the Lviv region that are necessary to consider while constructing regional education policy. The article defines quantitative indicators of the subjects of the learning process in geography on various educational levels and in territorial aspect. This study reveals that during next five years, the best prospects regarding quantitative indicators will have basic geographical education, due to relatively favorable situation with the number of pupils in primary schools of the region. The article shows in detail the educational achievements of geography students at regional and national levels; points the centers for optimal development of geographic education such as Lviv, Drohobych, Sambir, Stryi, Chervonograd; and reveals scientific and methodological improvements of teachers of geography in the region. The research analyzes the contradictory trend between quantitative growth of professional sector of geographical education (opening of new regional university departments) and the needs of secondary school in specialists, and between socially conditioned restriction of employment of young professionals because of growing proportion of retired among teachers of geography. It was found that 65% of graduate students of department of geography at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv do not mind working in education and respectively can replace within 5–7 years all teachers of geography at pre-retirement and retirement age in the region. However, the lack of effective educational policies at national and regional levels prevents replenishment of school’s segment of geographical education by young professionals, and thus slows down the process of modernization of education and its real reform. Key words: geographic education, levels of geographic education, the quality of knowledge on geography, age structure of geography’s teachers, teaching achievements of the geography teachers of the region, professional intentions of the graduates of Geography Department.

Abstract (sommario):
Several factors are bound to influence a young person’s decision to study a particular study programme, including his or her interests and commitment, abilities and skills, career prospects, family expectations, social pressure and peer influence, the information and advice available to him or her and financial constraints. To find out what factors contribute to adolescents’ decision to study geography and the career aspirations of future graduates and postgraduates, a survey was conducted in 2017 and 2020 at the Department of Geography, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana involving a total of 155 students in their first year of the first cycle and the first and the second year of the second cycle. The results will be of great help in the further development of the geography study, as knowledge of the factors influencing their decisions to study, as well as their career aspirations and expectations, will allow us to understand the low enrolment figures in geography studies in recent years (which are not comparable to those of the past in all three Slovenian departments of geography) and to find potential solutions or ways to improve the current situation.

Abstract (sommario):
Positive and strong relationships among various stakeholders are essential for the sustainable management of an organization. Despite growing interest in how various sport organizations manage stakeholders to promote social sustainability, there remains a gap in stakeholder and sustainability research in high school athletics. The purpose of this study was to examine how the social sustainability of sport organizations (i.e., high school athletics) were maintained during decision-making processes. Specifically, this study used a qualitative case study framed by stakeholder theory to investigate how the relevant decision-makers in high school athletics (i.e., principals and athletic directors) manage other stakeholders in their departmental decision-making processes to promote the sustainability of their athletic department. Two high schools from the US and South Korea, one from each country, were selected as the cases for the current study. Semi-structured interviews regarding stakeholder management in departmental decision-making processes were conducted with four individual interviewees, including the principals and athletic directors of each high school. The results of this study illustrated that both the US and the South Korean high school athletic departments utilized stakeholder engagement strategy in their departmental decision-making processes. The principals and athletic directors recognized the importance of communicating with other stakeholders and engaging them in athletic department decisions. Specifically, the organizational decisions of both high school athletic departments were made in consultation with the main internal stakeholders of the athletic department (i.e., the principal and athletic director) as well as other various stakeholders (e.g., parents, coaches, alumni association).

In this brief note on the movement (or should it be defection?) of UK economic geographers from geography departments into business schools, I argue that this movement is in fact part of a wider de-prioritization and emasculation of economic geography within many geography departments across the country. Yet this rundown of British economic geography has occurred precisely at a time when the importance and relevance of the subdiscipline have become increasingly recognized within national and local policy circles. Reversing the institutional decline of economic geography across the British university system is therefore imperative.

From his appointment as a lecturer in 1950, the author has spent all his academic career within the Department of Geography of the Université de Haute-Bretagne à Rennes, of which he was acting Head for a long while, until his retirement in 1984, when he became an emeritus fellow. After his doctorate thesis in 1955 and a short stay at Chicago and Northwestern Universities, in 1956 he met in Princeton Jean Gottmann who was then putting the first touches to his major work Megalopolis. Jean Gottmann was to play a decisive role in directing the young Breton geographer towards research work in applied geography. In France, applied geography suffered from severe backwardness until the publication of Géographie et action. Introduction à la géographie appliquée (1960). Forty years later, La Géographie appliquée: Du géographe universitaire au géographe professionnel (1999) showed the way covered on a national and worldwide scale. Michel Phlipponneau was chairman of the Commission on Applied Geography of the I.G.U from 1968 to 1980. He was himself an actor in regional planning in Brittany and abroad as an expert for the United Nations, and at a political level as a departmental and regional Counsellor and as Deputy-Mayor of Rennes and President of the Urban District.

Abstract (sommario):
The article discusses the process of creating and developing a library and museum as part of the educational and scientific material base of the Cabinet of Geography at the Department of Geography and Ethnography of Imperial Kazan University. From the annual reports on the activities of the Department it can be seen that the acquisition of the Library with new editions, and the Ethnographic Museum with collections, was systematic. These processes were interconnected and aimed at creating a high-quality integrated material base for the development of the educational and scientific process. The article emphasizes that the leading role in the processes of forming the library and museum belonged to the head of the Department of Geography and Ethnography, Petr Ivanovich Krotov and Bruno Friedrichovich Adler. Peter Krotov created the Cabinet of Geography. Bruno Adler improved and developed not only the Cabinet of Geography itself, but also ethnographic science in the Volga Region and Russia as a whole. For example, having academic ties with Russian and foreign scientists, Bruno Adler received many publications and subjects for the Cabinet of Geography as a gift. This allowed for the year to increase several times, both the library and the museum under the Cabinet of Geography. The scientifically organized cabinet, which has comprehensive collections and professional literature, has become a quality source base for the development of ethnographic science at Kazan University.
