Abstract (sommario):
Ethical problems are receiving a great deal of attention recently in medical community. In the school of dental community, it has been concerned with these things. This survey was conducted to find out of the school of dentisty Korean students' perceptions toward the ethical problems. Data was collected by using questionnare. We received 128 cases that senior was 61 and freshman was 67. This collected data showed that school of dentistry students regard bribery as the most common ethical problem. Other frequently mentioned problems are treatment equality, refusal and unkindness of patient. Also, they agreed to artificial abortion in 65.6%, euthanasia in 88.8%, brain death in 90.2%, in vitro fertilization in 95.2%, and homosexuality in 56.8%. But, They disagreed to human duplication in 80.0%. School of dentistry students' perceptions was not statistically by grade. It means that school of dentistry education is far from ethics education. Therefore, school of dentistry curriculum ought to occupy a greater portion of the ethical curriculum for students. Also, Many researchers should carry out that these issues needs to be done in a more comprehensive way.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Pierre Fauchard, considered the father of dentistry, contributed to the development of different fields of dentistry that we know today. However, the contribution of this important individual to the fields of oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial pathology is unknown. This study aimed to identify Pierre Fauchard’s contribution to these areas of dentistry. We focused on “Le Chirurgien Dentiste, or Traité des Dents” in both French and English, looking for information about the oral diseases diagnosed and treated by Fauchard. Information on patient history, disease description, treatment applied, and clinical follow-up was collected. A contemporary analysis of the diseases was performed, and the collected data were systematized, reported, and analyzed descriptively, according to the current literature on the addressed topics. Information on conditions such as scurvy, parulides, epulides, oral ulcers, entoalveolar abscesses, dental alterations, and post-exodontia incidents were elucidated. Findings indicated that Pierre Fauchard described, diagnosed, and treated different soft and hard tissue diseases of great interest to the fields of oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial pathology.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The above factors emphasize the scope of this thesis for further investigations on zirconia, the improvement of all-ceramic zirconia restorations, and especially the interaction of zirconia and veneering and its influence on the performance of the whole restoration. The introduction, chapter 1, gave a literature overview on zirconia ceramics. In chapter 2, the objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of abrading before and after sintering using alumina-based abrasives on the surface of yttria-tetragonal zirconia polycrystals. Particular attention was paid to the amount of surface stress–assisted phase transformation (tetragonal→monoclinic) and the presence of microcracks. Chapter 3 is based on the idea that the conventional sintering techniques for zirconia based materials, which are commonly used in dental reconstruction, may not provide a uniform heating, with consequent generation of microstructural flaws in the final component. As a consequence of the sintering system, using microwave heating, may represent a viable alternative. The purpose of the study was to compare the dimensional variations and physical and microstructural characteristics of commercial zirconia (Y-TZP), used as a dental restoration material, sintered in conventional and microwave furnaces. Chapter 4 described the effect of sandblasting before and after sintering on the surface roughness of zirconia and the microtensile bond strength of a pressable veneering ceramic to zirconia.

Khatami, Shiva. "Clinical Reasoning in Dentistry". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/27095.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Background: Clinical reasoning is the core competency of healthcare. It involves cognition and interaction with the environment to understand clinical situations, make diagnostic and therapeutic decisions, and address clinical problems. Defining competency in clinical reasoning is a difficult objective for dental educators because of our limited understanding of this phenomenon which compromises the validity of any curricular model and assessment method that have been used to date. Objectives: To describe the process and strategies of clinical reasoning used by dental clinicians across different levels of expertise to develop a conceptual framework for curricular design and assessment of competency. Methods: Using “think-aloud” method, I interviewed 18 dental students about biopsychosocial issues influencing oral health identified in 6 vignettes; and 8 orthodontic residents plus 11 orthodontists about problems of craniofacial growth and malocclusion presented in 2 vignettes. The interview transcripts were analyzed to explore the process and strategies of clinical reasoning used by the participants. Results: The reasoning process in both groups included: 1) a ritualistic approach to collect information for a treatment plan; 2) forward and backward reasoning to make and test hypotheses from clinical information; 3) pattern recognition and an integrated script of knowledge and experience triggered by related attributes of the script leading to a clinical diagnosis and plan; and 4) decision trees to evaluate treatment options and maximize the probability and utility of outcomes. Seven reasoning strategies (scientific, conditional, collaborative, narrative, ethical, pragmatic and “part-whole”) were used by both groups. However, experienced clinicians were more confident in their appraisal of uncertain situations and dilemmas as they integrated several reasoning strategies in the process; used refined scripts of knowledge and experience in familiar situations; and were able to reflect on the impact on their reasoning of the larger social, cultural and political context. Conclusions: Clinical reasoning in dentistry is a contextual and interactive phenomenon that requires integration of specific reasoning strategies to address the biopsychosocial factors influencing oral health. Expertise in clinical reasoning develops through continuous framing and solving problems to refine networks of knowledge and experience and develop adaptive strategies to address the contextual determinants of oral health.

Abstract (sommario):
Review question / Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the methodological quality of the literature and the risk of bias used in systematic reviews of therapies for bruxism in dentistry, applying the Amstar II qualitative guide and to answer the following question: What do we know so far about the different treatments applied for bruxism and their effectiveness, as well as what is the overall confidence of the systematic reviews evaluating this topic? Condition being studied: There is an ongoing debate about the causal factors associated with patients diagnosed with bruxism and thus various treatment approaches, so according to the available scientific evidence there is no consensus on which is the most effective. (4) (8) (10). According to several studies, occlusal splints do not currently have a scientifically proven efficacy for the management of bruxism, because they lack randomized controlled clinical studies, and should therefore be considered as a limited treatment modality, since the effect of the splints does not seem to address the cause of bruxism and serves mainly for the management of the signs and symptoms of this disorder (11) (12). Alternative therapies such as relaxation and biofeedback have been proposed for bruxism, especially in cases of daytime bruxism, which are more related to stress and anxiety. (13). There are also studies that support the use of the NTI-tssa device can be used successfully, however, it may present side effects if necessary checks and readjustments are not performed (14). Some medications can be used to decrease bruxing episodes, but some pharmacological treatments may not be safe if used for prolonged periods of time, considering the inherent side effects or risks of dependence (15).
