Abstract (sommario):
For more than three decades, social scientists have struggled with the statistical consequences of aggregation. Ever since Robinson (1950) first shocked a whole generation of social scientists with his demonstration of the “ecological fallacy,” much has been written about alleged fallacies, biases, pitfalls, and hazards of one kind or another lurking behind aggregate data and about strategies for circumventing them (Goodman, 1953, 1959; Blalock 1964; Scheuch 1966; Alker 1969; Shively 1969, 1974; Hannan 1971; Hammond 1973; Meckstroth 1974; Hanushek, Jackson, and Kain 1974; Hannan and Burstein 1974; Irwin and Lichtman 1976; Smith 1977; Langbein and Lichtman 1978). Intrigued—or alarmed—by the recurrent observation that correlations and regressions based on aggregate data (group means) often differ dramatically from those based on individual data, researchers have sought to answer the traditional question of ecological analysis: under what conditions can inferences to individual-level (micro) relationships be made from group-level (macro) data?

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract From 1972 to 1977 the West German artist Marianne Wex (1937-2020) undertook an extensive photographic research project that eventually was published as a book: Let's Take Back Our Space: “Female” and “Male” Body Language as a Result of Patriarchal Structures (1979). Both visual analysis and homeopathic demonstration of the patriarchal state's performative effect on somatic physical expression, the book is as much a work of renegade feminist sociology as it is a work of photo-conceptualism. This essay performs an archaeology of Let's Take Back Our Space, reading it in the context of contemporaneous aestheticopolitical discourses, including feminist autodidacticism.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The Netherlands and Denmark housed Europe’s first two postwar homophile organizations, and by the 1960s, activists were already debating anti-homosexual laws in national media (in the Netherlands) demonstrating publicly; thus Stonewall was not the origin of activism in either of these countries. Yet the events in New York City 1969 had two lasting influences in these countries: first, Stonewall catalyzed a transnational ‘consciousness’ (or solidarity) among gay and lesbian activists during a period of radicalization; and second, the Christopher Street Liberation Day 1970 inspired the visible demonstrations known today as ‘Pride’ celebrations. From 1971, Denmark’s national organization planned Christopher Street Day demonstrations every June; and that same year, a radical Gay Liberation Front split off from the association. From 1977, the Netherlands planned its own late-June demonstrations, often with transnational themes (e.g. Anita Bryant in 1977, the Iranian Revolution in 1979). In the following decades, these demonstrations of gay/lesbian visibility moved to August, and Denmark (and Belgium) dropped Christopher Street from event names. Yet scholars, activists, and the general public still evoke the memory of the first Liberation Day when referring to a ‘post-Stonewall’ era in the Netherlands and Denmark.

Abstract (sommario):
Occupational therapists who wish to see services expand in community settings must be prepared to take an active role in program development. The article examines 12 program development strategies which are illustrated using the experience of developing a rural program in a social service system. Community occupational therapy services in Prince Edward Island were initially developed, from 1977 to 1979, by a small group of occupational therapists. The group obtained Federal Welfare Demonstration Grant funding for a pilot project which was administered by the provincial Department of Social Services. In 1979, the Prince Edward Island Provincial Government approved ongoing funding for an Island-wide community occupational therapy service.

Abstract (sommario):
This article compares the effects of two different pay-for-performance systems implemented as a result of the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978. Analyses are based on responses to five annual attitude surveys administered between 1979 and 1984 to civilian employees at four Navy R&D laboratories. Two of the labs, located in California, implemented pay for performance for all their white collar employees under a CSRA demonstration project testing an integrated approach to pay performance appraisal and position classification. The other two labs, located on the East coast, served as a comparison group for the federal-wide merit pay system covering supervisors and managers. Overall results were found to be more positive for the two demonstration labs in California.

Abstract (sommario):
In the century since Franz Boas began his field work on the Northwest Coast, the Kwakwaka'wakw1 potlatch has proved irresistible to the anthropological imagination. It has been variously interpreted as an interest-bearing investment of property (Boas 1897), as a demonstration of a paranoid, megalomaniacal personality (Benedict 1934), as a substitution for warfare (Codere 1950), as a means of distributing food (Piddcocke 1965; Vayda 1961), as a phenomenon of social morphology (Levi-Strauss 1969; Rosman and Rubel 1971), and as a religious event (Goldman 1975; Walens 1981). Indeed, an intellectual history of anthropology can now be written simply by examining how the Kwakwaka'wakw potlatch has served the various theoretical schools (see Michaelson 1979). If anything unites such disparate accounts, however, I suggest it is an underestimation of the impact of European colonization on Kwakwaka'wakw society.2 Our understanding of the nineteenth-century potlatch has been limited by a tendency to exclude Kwakwaka'wakw cosmology from the colonial power dynamic. This study contributes, then, to the longrunning, and at times vociferous, scholarly discourse on the potlatch by focusing directly on the cultural repercussions of the colonial experience. Consequently, it is not an analysis simply of the funding or logistics of exchange: This essay attempts to situate the cosmologies behind the gift in their changing historical context in order to assess the socio-cultural impact of the colonial encounter on native systems of belief.

Abstract (sommario):
The Visually Impaired Program, Division of Special Education of the Oakland County (Michigan) Intermediate School District, obtained Federal Act 94-142 funding in 1979. The purpose of this funding was to encourage establishment of programs that facilitated special education in the least restrictive educational environment. The Visually Impaired Program utilized these funds to establish the Educational Low Vision Aids Screening Clinic and to provide comprehensive low vision evaluations by certified low vision specialists. * This paper describes clinic rationales, procedural implementation of services from 1979 to 1982, and resultant findings. The study served as a model for the establishment of a statewide program funded in October, 1985, by the Michigan Legislature and administered by the Michigan Commission for the Blind in cooperation with the Michigan Department of Education. * A Demonstration Project funded through 94-142 federal funds, 1979-1982.

As recently as 1975, Cyrille Vogel, in his Introduction aux sources du Moyen Age, was obliged to forego a demonstration of the transmission of the antiphoner, “given the complexity of research still in progress”.[1] Since then, with the completion in 1979 of the six-volume Corpus Antiphonalium Officii (= CAO) of René-Jean Hesbert, the foundations have been laid for all future historical research on the origins of the Roman office hours. Twelve selected sources are edited, first text-incipits of the sources in their original form, and then each complete text separately; more than this, in the two concluding volumes Hesbert undertook the task of classifying 800 sources of the office by means of statistical methods, in order thereby to facilitate the reconstruction of an archetype.[2]

Abstract (sommario):
The study entitled “Speech Act Expressions in the Advertisements on Television: A Case Study of Three Advertisements Both Food & Health Products and Cell-phone Provider” seeks to illuminate the types of speech acts based on Searle (1979) and the approaches of advertisements proposed by Book and Schick (1996). This study mainly uses a qualitative method to analyze the collected data in this research. The data sources are in the form of verbal texts, namely, statements of the speaker’s dialogue and narration both Food & Health Product and cell-phone provider advertisements. These advertisements were taken from several private TV stations aired during 1st March – 30th April 2010. The three advertisements were selected and categorized into four styles, namely, dramatizations, demonstrations, presentations, and testimonials. These commercials were classified into three tones, namely, factual, emotional, and humorous. Furthermore, the research was conducted to investigate the types of speech acts expressed in these different styles and tones of advertisements, namely representatives, directives, commissives, expressive, and declaratives. The study has discovered three tones within testimonial, demonstration, and presentation styles. Furthermore, it has exposed one emotional tone within presentation style. And two factual tones within testimonial and demonstration styles. This research has obtained linguistic notion and comprehension for students who are engaged in learning speech act expression in several utterances, mainly advertisements. Keywords: speech act, advertisement, style, tone

During the period from 1965-1977, I was engaged in a program of selecting and acquiring a new dark sky site in California for the Lick Observatory. Even though the effort was, in the end, unsuccessful, this work did lead to several important advances in our understanding of the general problem of optimizing optical-region astronomical observing conditions. These included: 1)The development of the polar star trail method of seeing measurement (Harlan and Walker 1965; Walker 1971).2)Definition of the conditions required to optimize the seeing through the use of the polar star trail method of measurement at a number of potential and established observing sites around the world (Walker 1970, 1971, 1983, 1984; McInnes and Walker 1974).3)Demonstration of the widespread effects of atmospheric pollution in reducing photometric quality at potential sites in California (Walker 1970).4)The first extensive study of the effects of light pollution on astronomical observations.

A useful extension to Nickerson and Adams's (1979) task of remembering the features of a common U.S. penny is memorizing the features of a Mercury dime. After a minute of study, students recall more features of the dime than of the unstudied penny. This demonstration effectively illustrates the subjective nature of scientific judgments, the value of statistics in data management, arid part of the rationale for including a method and results section in a scientific paper. In addition, it exposes students to the principle of memory and attention that details of an object or event are difficult to remember unless they are intentionally studied.

The analysis of demonstration locations classified by degree of urbanization shows that demonstrating is an urban phenomenon. Seldom are demonstrations held in thinly populated residential areas. A demonstration can thus be considered among the farms of political action for which the participation stimulating factors are clearly more present in urban areas than in rural areas. The distribution of the demonstrations over the regions indicates that more demonstrating is done in Flanders than in Wallonia. Flemings and 'walloons, moreover, appeared in the streets for different points of confiict during the period from 1953 to 1974.Demonstrations with ideological themes overwhelmingly, and communitarian themes mostly, occurred in Flanders ; demonstrations for socioeconomic purposes occurred mostly in Wallonia. Demonstrations in the capital, Brussels, had the most participants on the average in general andalso for the three conflict areas.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper is about the application of professional information design practices that have grown out of research conducted by the Communication Research Institute (CRI), formerly the Communication Research Institute of Australia (CRIA), and others. In particular, it focuses on the role of testing in studio practice. Starting in the mid 1980s, CRI undertook a number of large-scale applied projects funded by government and industry to improve the quality of communication between large organisations and the public. The research focused on discovering the best methods for designing information for public use. The CRI research was able to draw on a substantial body of prior research in design methods (e.g. Jones 1970), document designs (e.g. Felker et al 1980) and specifically in information design (e.g. Easterby & Zwaga 1984). Moreover, a growing number of significant case histories published in this journal have provided an emerging view of professional practice in the field (e.g. Goodwin 1984, Tomaselli & Tomaselli 1984, Waller 1984) This early work suggests the possibility of a unified set of highly productive information design methods, and was foreshadowed in the important contributions of Pat Wright (e.g. Wright 1979). The work started at CRI in the mid-1980s focused on unifying information design methods and demonstrating their productivity (Fisher and Sless 1990). By 1992, it was possible to suggest that the resulting design methods had a wide general application to information design (Sless 1992). However, it remained to demonstrate that these methods could be applied consistently across a range of information design problems and that the resultant designs could consistently perform at an acceptable level. This paper reports on that demonstration. In particular it shows through practical examples how testing and measurement of a design’s performance has become an integral part of professional information design practice.

Abstract (sommario):
The argument I wish to advance in this paper is that Gricean theory (Grice 1968, 1969, 1975, 1978, 1981) and, in particular, the potentially useful relevance theory which developed from it (Sperber & Wilson 1986), are flawed through their failure to consider cultural and social context; but that attempts to relate linguistic pragmatics to more socially-conscious models of language use, such as register/genre theory (Ure and Ellis 1977; Halliday 1978; Gregory and Carroll 1978; Ghadessy 1988, 1993; Swales 1988; Martin 1985, 1992 etc.) may produce interesting cross-fertilization and be beneficial to both. This essay falls into three sections. The first is a brief introductory critique of Grice's theory as an asocial idealized construct. The second section brings relevance theory and genre/register theory face to face and under the spotlight, hoping to reveal the weaknesses of each and show how, theoretically, they could compensate for and complement each other. In the third section I consider the case of metaphor, arguing that and demonstrating how the account of metaphor provided in Relevance: Communication and Cognition can be supplemented in practice by considering the kinds of register/genre in which metaphors find expression.

Abstract (sommario):
Breast cancer is a major public health problem worldwide. Important advances have improved survival, but early detection remains the main clinical challenge in reducing mortality. Currently, mammography is the ‘gold standard’ tool for breast cancer screening. However, the search for an early breast cancer detection method is the subject of extensive research. Although infrared imaging or breast thermography for early breast cancer detection has been evaluated since the late 1950s, the negative results reported in 1979 by the Breast Cancer Detection and Demonstration Project decreased interest in this imaging modality. Advances in infrared imaging and reduced equipment costs have, however, renewed interest in breast thermography. Breast cancer in developing countries requires new strategies to increase early detection and access to care. In this article, we highlight the principles and advances of infrared imaging technology and describe our experience with new-generation infrared imaging for early breast cancer detection in rural communities in southern Mexico.

Abstract: The dialogical unity for the analysis of the Self includes the descending intersubjective interpenetration of the psychologist's lens into the self-others' feeling/thinking together with the analytic demonstration concerning the transformations of the objects that participate in the intrapsychological stream of the focused feeling/thinking. The theoretical and methodological issues selected for our present study concern how to make dialogical analysis out of empirical data and how to articulate the analyzed content to the interpretative whole situation from which the researcher and the subject matter are part of. Dialogism does not have a standardized procedure and we are not considering that there is only one correct methodological procedure in dialogical psychology. Nevertheless, discussing some dialogical approaches to a short story from Albalucía Ángel (1979), we found that the starting point for the dialogical analysis should be the mediated relation of the Self with the others, emphasizing the relevance of the extra-verbal concrete situation.

Abstract (sommario):
An inter-artistic interrelation of Giorgos Chimonas’ The Builders with Michelangelo’s Pietà and the painting of Alexandros Isaris Morpheus or Deposition The object of this interart study is the dialogical interrelation of Literature and Painting through the demonstration of the visual dimension of Giorgos Chimonas’ prose fiction, The Builders (1979). The research uses methodological tools from Comparative Poetics in order to set the necessary terms and preconditions of an approach between two distinct Arts, namely Literature and Painting. In this respect, the analysis is greatly influenced by Dimitris Angelatos’ hermeneutic study of the relations between literature and painting and specifically his theorization of the paradigm of simultaneity. Therefore, a synthesis is attempted between the numerous mentions of Chimonas’ theoretical work on logos (λόγος) and its simultaneity, on matters of consciousness and phenomenology, and most importantly on painting and on the crucial role of visuality, in combination with theoretical aspects of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Gilles Deleuze on painting (and on art in general) as expression. Then the research goes on to the interart comparison of Chimonas’ artistic sketch “Valasi and the messenger of The Builders”, his sole visual artwork that represents a scene from his literary work, with the respective excerpt from The Builders, and with the paradigmatic - intertextual axis which is opened between the painting of Alexandros Isaris Morpheus or Deposition (1979) and Michelangelo’s Pietà, as the initial source of the former. Thus the paper has two correlated objectives: firstly to interconnect the theoretical and the artistic work in Chimonas’ oeuvre and secondly to showcase the visual and pictorial aspects of logos in The Builders.

Abstract (sommario):
Objective To evaluate clinical and laboratory findings in 225 dogs with naturally occurring hypoadrenocorticism diagnosed over a 14-year period. Design Retrospective case series. Animals 220 dogs with primary hypoadrenocorticism and 5 dogs with secondary hypoadrenocorticism (primary ACTH deficiency). Procedure We reviewed medical records of all dogs with naturally occurring hypoadrenocorticism examined at The Animal Medical Center between 1979 and 1993 or at Tufts University, Foster Hospital for Small Animals, between 1987 and 1993. Results Dogs ranged from 4 months to 14 years old. Most (71%) were female, and female dogs had a significantly higher relative risk of developing hypoadrenocorticism than did males. Great Danes, Portuguese Water Dogs, Rottweilers, Standard Poodles, West Highland White Terriers, and Wheaton Terriers had a significantly higher relative risk of developing hypoadrenocorticism than did dogs of other breeds. Common owner complaints included lethargy, poor appetite, and vomiting, whereas lethargy, weakness, and dehydration were common abnormalities detected on physical examination. Serum biochemical testing at the time of diagnosis revealed moderate-to-severe azotemia and hyperphosphatemia in most dogs. In 99 of 172 (57.6%) dogs that had a pretreatment urinalysis performed, urine specific gravity was < 1.030 even though dogs were azotemic. Serum electrolyte changes included hyperkalemia (n = 215), hyponatremia (183), hypochloremia (94), and hypercalcemia (69). Five of the 220 dogs with primary hypoadrenocorticism and the 5 dogs with secondary hypoadrenocorticism did not have hyperkalemia at time of diagnosis. In all dogs, ACTH stimulation testing revealed a low to low-normal baseline serum cortisol concentration with little to no rise after ACTH administration. Endogenous plasma ACTH concentration measured in 35 dogs with primary hypoadrenocorticism was markedly high; whereas ACTH concentration was undetectable to low in the 5 dogs with secondary hypoadrenocorticism. Clinical Implications Hypoadrenocorticism is a rare disease in dogs, most commonly affecting young to middle-aged females; some breeds are at greater risk of developing the disease than others. In general, clinical signs are nonspecific and similar to manifestations of more common diseases. Serum electrolyte disturbances of hyperkalemia and hyponatremia are characteristic in dogs with primary hypoadrenocorticism, but concentrations may be normal in dogs with early or mild primary or secondary hypoadrenocorticism. Diagnosis of hypoadrenocorticism is best confirmed by demonstration of a low baseline serum cortisol concentration with a subnormal or negligible response to ACTH administration. Determination of endogenous plasma ACTH concentrations is valuable in differentiating primary from secondary hypoadrenocorticism, particularly in dogs with normal serum electrolyte concentrations.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. Henriksson et al. (2010), hereafter HALTL10, criticize Annan and Hargreaves (2006a) (AH06) primarily on the grounds that we assumed that different sources of data were conditionally independent given the climate sensitivity. While we consider this approximation to have been a reasonable one under the circumstances (and provided arguments to justify this approach), we also acknowledged its importance in our original paper and performed several sensitivity analyses. The alternative calculations presented by HALTL10 appear to strengthen rather than contradict our conclusion. HALTL10 additionally criticize Annan and Hargreaves (2009) (AH09) for proposing a Cauchy type prior (as an alternative to the use of a uniform prior, which was widespread up to that time) "without sufficient support", and further claim that anticipated economic damages were used as a means of selecting the prior. We are surprised by these claims, especially considering that the proposed prior was justified at some length both on the basis of both the "Charney report" (National Research Council, 1979) and basic physical arguments, and also in light of our elementary demonstration of the pathological failings of the most commonly-used alternative. Thus, these claims are factually incorrect.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. Henriksson et al. (2010), hereafter HALTL10, criticise Annan and Hargreaves (2006a) (AH06) primarily on the grounds that we assumed that different sources of data were conditionally independent given the climate sensitivity. While we consider this approximation to have been a reasonable one in the circumstances (and provided arguments to justify this approach), we also acknowledged its importance in our original paper and performed several sensitivity analyses. The alternative calculations presented by HALTL10 appear to strengthen rather than contradict our conclusion. HALTL10 additionally criticise Annan and Hargreaves (2009) (AH09) for proposing a Cauchy-type prior (as an alternative to the use of a uniform prior which was widespread up to that time) "without sufficient support'', and further claim that our choice was irrationally based on an economic assessment. We are surprised by these baseless claims, especially considering that the proposed prior was justified at some length both on the basis of both the "Charney report'' (National Research Council, 1979) and basic physical arguments, and also in light of our elementary demonstration of the pathological failings of the most commonly-used alternative. Thus, these claims are factually incorrect.

Abstract (sommario):
The effects of insulin deficiency on nitrogen metabolism in muscle and liver have been extensively studied with recent in vivo demonstration of impaired protein synthesis in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. Despite the significant contribution of small intestinal mucosa to overall protein metabolism, the effects of insulin deficiency on intestinal protein synthesis have not been completely defined. We studied the effects of streptozotocin-induced diabetes on total protein synthesis by small intestinal mucosa and on synthesis of a single enzyme protein of the enterocyte brush-border membrane sucrase-isomaltase. We used the flooding-dose technique of McNurlan, Tomkins, and Garlick (Biochem. J. 178: 373–379, 1979) to minimize the difficulties of measuring specific radioactivity of precursor phenylalanine and determined incorporation into mucosal proteins and sucrase-isomaltase 20 min after injection of the labeled amino acid. Diabetes did not alter mucosal mass as determined by weight and content of protein and DNA during the 5 days after injection of streptozotocin. Increased rates of sucrase-isomaltase synthesis developed beginning on day 3, and those of total protein developed on day 5. Thus intestinal mucosal protein synthesis is not an insulin-sensitive process.

Abstract (sommario):
László Huzián was a determining personality of the higher education of Hungarian crop protection more precisely that of the agricultural entomology. Training of the scientific and extension specialists of Hungarian agricultural entomology from 1960 till 1983 would have been unimaginable without him. He was the builder of the agricultural entomology school established by Gusztáv Adolf Manninger, the developer of the training’s essential and organisational standard, who sacrificed his life’s work for developing the crop protection. He found, characterized many pests (E.g. Scrobipalpa ocellatella, Lixus scabricollis, Tanymecus palliatus, Mesagroicus obscurus) new for the Hungarian fauna and worked out a control technology against them. It is important to mention his activity in creating the forecasting of the big field crop animal pests mainly that of the sugar beet pests. One top of his educational work was the wonderful manual „Agricultural Entomology” written with Sándor Bognár in 1979. László Szalay-Marzsó said of this book that it was impossible to write a better one. He has been right. The magnificent crop protection library and the unique richness and accuracy of the animal demonstration material (slides, pictures, preparates, showcases, etc.) established at the Gödöllő University of Agriculture can be thanked to his extraordinary systematizing mentality and tireless efforts.

Abstract (sommario):
This study aims to determine whether there is an influence of social media content and information quality on the #presidential3period phenomenon on the perception of Generation Z on TikTok. Reporting on the issue of President Jokowi for the 3rd period is currently a trending topic on social media and involves Generation Z who take part in a live demonstration on #presidential3period content on TikTok. This study uses the theory of diffusion of innovation (Everret M. Rogers, 1962) and uses and effects (Sven Windahl, 1979) with the assumption that the adoption of tiktok in generation Z has an effect in increasing understanding related to political content. This research uses quantitative research with positivism paradigm and expansive research nature. This study uses a questionnaire on generation Z with a range of ages 13-27 years, as the main method in obtaining data through Google Form. Respondents in this study were. The results in this study indicate that the variables X1 (Social Media Content) and X2 (Quality of Information significantly affect Public Perception (Y) is influenced by other variables that are not used by this study. This shows generation Z. can adopt TikTok media to access political information, especially on the issue of #president3period which causes an understanding effect on generation Z.

Abstract (sommario):
It is a well-known fact, that in the 1970s, feminist activists reappro- priated the figure of the witch in various ways as a symbol of alterity, political radicalism, feminist revolt or victimhood, or the presentation of subversive (healing or body) knowledge. The article investigates the construction of this «artificial myth» in the early 1970s within different milieus of the emergent women's movements based on the examination of three feminist magazines and health guidebooks. «Die Hexenpresse. Zeitschrift für feministische Agitation» (1972-1976) in Basel, the West Berlin health guide Hexengeflüster. Frauen greifen zur Selbsthilfe (1975), and the artistic-literary journal «Sorcières. Les femmes vivent» (1975- 1982) in Paris are read as sites and tools of alternative knowledge produc- tion. The article aims at demonstrating the new witch myth as a matrix of «knowledge empowerment».

Abstract (sommario):
Graham (1968) demonstrated that logs became attractive to ambrosia beetles after the sapwood was subjected to anaerobic conditions. Pursuing this lead, Cade et al. (1970) and Moeck (1970a, 1970b, 1971) extracted, analyzed, and bioassayed anaerobic products from western hemlock and Douglas-fir trees and ascertained that ethanol was the principal “primary attractant” to the ambrosia beetles, Gnathotrichus sulcatus (LeConte) and Trypodendron lineatum (Olivier), respectively. The demonstration that ethanol enhanced the response of the Douglas-fir beetle, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins, to its aggregation pheromones frontalin and seudenol (Pitrnan et al. 1975) suggested that ethanol could also be involved in the primary attraction of or host recognition by bark beetles. We report that the mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, is arrested to ethanol in a laboratorv olfactometer.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. A case study of Bangladesh presents a methodological possibility based on a global approach for assessing river flood risk and its changes considering flood hazard, exposure, basic vulnerability and coping capacity. This study consists of two parts in the issue of flood change: hazard assessment (Part 1) and risk assessment (Part 2). In Part 1, a hazard modeling technology was introduced and applied to the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna (GBM) basin to quantify the change of 50- and 100-year flood hazards in Bangladesh under the present (1979–2003) and future (2075–2099) climates. Part 2 focuses on estimating nationwide flood risk in terms of affected people and rice crop damage due to a 50-year flood hazard identified in Part 1, and quantifying flood risk changes between the presence and absence of existing water infrastructure (i.e., embankments). To assess flood risk in terms of rice crop damage, rice paddy fields were extracted and flood stage-damage curves were created for maximum risk scenarios as a demonstration of risk change in the present and future climates. The preliminary results in Bangladesh show that a tendency of flood risk change strongly depends on the temporal and spatial dynamics of exposure and vulnerability such as distributed population and effectiveness of water infrastructure, which suggests that the proposed methodology is applicable anywhere in the world.

Abstract (sommario):
In Brazil, an industrial trawling fishery directed to Euvola ziczac started in 1973 and collapsed after 1980, when scallop landings reached 8,800 t. Since 1995 E. ziczac landings have not surpassed a few hundred kilograms. Based on surveys carried out in 1974-1975 and in 1995-1996, this work assesses temporal changes occurred in scallop distribution and relative abundance patterns and analyzes the current stock situation under the present management regimes applied to the local demersal trawling fishery. In the 1970's E. ziczac was concentrated in a main bed extending from southern São Paulo to northern Santa Catarina States and between 30 and 50 m depth. This pattern changed dramatically during the 1990's, when only two very small and low-density concentrations were found in the region. Cumulative effects of reducing areas and density within the remnant concentrations produced a reduction in the stock biomass of 98%. Management of the local double rig trawler fishery has always focused on its first main target, the shrimps Farfantepenaeus paulensis and F. brasiliensis. Additional measures have not been implemented, even after substantial part of the fleet has directed its effort to alternative shelf and slope resources. The collapse of the Brazilian scallop fishery provides a striking example of irreversible damage caused by uncontrolled fishing redirection allocated to other resources, demonstrating the need of changes in the Brazilian demersal fishery management model.

This text is a kind of breviary on the so-called “Bolsonarism”. It is a breviary because the particularities and inscriptions in the political, social, economic, and cultural reality of Bolsonarism are not to be exhausted by anyone, it is not possible. It is also a breviary in the sense that some brief lessons to work as antidotes against this 21st century fascism – which has totalitarian refinements or Nazi touches, as in the use of Goebbels’ currency - are to be presented. Bolsonarism does not flee the worst of classical Caesarism, being a demonstration of Bonapartism. Sometimes, it is even possible to relate Bolsonarism to Italian Berlusconism. Abstract (sommario):
"From Antiquity to Modernity, the topic of the Amazons questioned the relationships between men and women, triggering a series of anthropological, social and cultural issues. In the wake of the second-wave feminism of the ’60, resonating with the Women’s Liberation Movement, several authors revisited this topos: Monique Wittig, Les Guérillères (1969), Joanna Russ, The Female Man (1975), Marge Piercy, Woman on the Edge of Time (1976), Joan Slonczewski, A Door into Ocean (1986). In this paper I focus on Joanna Russ’s “polytopia”, and Marge Piercy’s Woman on the Edge of Time, the only utopia (to my knowledge) in which the ideal society is situated not in a different space or time, but in the (delusional) mind of the protagonist. My thesis is that, in these texts, the Amazones’ utopia is a “thought experience”, a demonstration by the absurd warning against the dangers of perpetuating a society that discriminates women."

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose This paper aims to extend Rossiter’s C-OAR-SE method of measure design (IJRM, 2002, p. 19, p. 4, pp. 305-335; EJM, 2011, p. 45, p. 11, p. 12, pp. 1561-1588) by proposing five distinct construct models for designing optimally content-valid multiple-item and single-item measures. Design/methodology/approach The paper begins by dismissing convergent validation, the core procedure in Nunnally’s (1978) and Churchill’s (1979) psychometric method of measure design which allows alternative measures of the same construct. The method of dismissal is the mathematical demonstration that an alternative measure, no matter how highly its scores converge with those from the original measure, will inevitably produce different findings. The only solution to this knowledge-threatening problem is to agree on an optimal measure of each of our major constructs and to use only that measure in all future research, as is standard practice in the physical sciences. The paper concludes by proposing an extension of Rossiter’s C-OAR-SE method to design optimal standard measures of judgment constructs, the most prevalent type of construct in marketing. Findings The findings are, first, the mathematical dismissal of the accepted practice of convergent validation of alternative measures of the same construct, which paves the way for, second, the proposal of five new C-OAR-SE-based construct models for designing optimal standard measures of judgment constructs, three of which require a multiple-item measure and two of which a single-item measure. Practical implications The common practice of accepting alternative measures of the same construct causes major problems for the social sciences: when different measures are used, it becomes impossible, except by remote chance, to replicate findings; meta-analyses become meaningless because the findings are averaged over different measures; and empirical generalizations cannot be trusted when measures are changed. These problems mean that we cannot continue to accept alternative measures of the constructs and that, for each construct, an optimal standard measure must be found. Originality/value The ideas in this paper, which have untold value for the future of marketing as a legitimate science, are unique to Rossiter’s C-OAR-SE method of measure design.

Abstract (sommario):
The main focus of this research is how the youth demonstration started in Thailand in late 2020. It is now and this demonstration is still going on in a more severe stage as Thailand just had an election on May 14th, 2023 but the authoritarian regime seems not to respect the majority votes. The analysis since late 2020, the demonstration of Thai youths, will be discussed in this research and the main question is what is the motivation of Youth’s demonstration will be analyzed. Why are high school and elementary school students walking out on the street for a political movement, and some out mobilizing in front of the Ministry of Education to represent people's opinions on political changes? When comparing student activism in Thailand on the Day of Great Sorrow "Wan Maha Wippayok" in 1973 and 1976, one sees that the two movements were to promote anti-dictatorship in Thailand. The people who played the role of a striker were university students. In contrast, the demonstration in 2020, it differs from the demonstrations in the 1970s; in the 2020 demonstration, people from all levels participated in this protest, especially elementary school and high school students. This research discovered the deep roots of this protest and how the government and Thai Youth should encounter it halfway through this shift so that the movement will achieve its goal and have less harm on the current economy. An aggressive movement has no benefit to Thai people and the economy. It destroys national GDP and wastes too much time rebuilding the economy under an aging society. Anonymously interviewing the scholars and students who joined the demonstration, data analysis, and online survey from the people who attended Thai schools are the key to finding an answer to the research questions.

On being juxtaposed with the latter, the artist decided on an addition to his part of the show with the aim of “completing” it (L’avanguardia, 1979) – the adjoining rooms were to host an exposition of artworks by Cricot 2 Theatre actors (Le opere, 1979: 94–95). Upset about the limited space in the Palazzo put at his disposal by curator Ryszard Stanisławski (The transcription, 2013: 1), he still managed to provide a selection of avant-garde works that were bold, numerous and manifold, while demonstrating a distinctive style that tended to be odd, pitiful and astounding. A visit to the sections arranged by Kantor encouraged reflection on the role he himself, as well as the circles gathered around the Krakow Group and the Foksal Gallery in Warsaw occupied in the Polish world of art.

Abstract (sommario):
Karl Krömmelbein (1920–1979) worked on both Paleozoic and Mesozoic sequences but is best remembered for his pioneering work on late Jurassic–early Cretaceous ostracod assemblages from Brazil and West Africa, clearly demonstrating in a series of publications between 1961 and 1972 the presence of comparable marginal-marine and non-marine faunas in continental margin basins on each side of the modern South Atlantic. These ostracods and their biostratigraphical distributions have assumed great importance in recent years consequent on the discovery of hydrocarbons, especially offshore Brazil. All Krömmelbein's published and background material is housed the the Senckenberg Forschungsinstitut und Naturmuseum, Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany with the sole exception of the material figured in Krömmelbein & Weber (1971) which is housed in the Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe and Landesamt für Bergbau, Energie und Geologie, Hannover, Germany. Do Carmo et al. (2008) make a number of erroneous statements about the material, i.e., that material of Krömmelbein (1965) was moved from Hannover to Frankfurt, and that Do Carmo et al.'s figured specimens from the Krömmelbein Collection in Frankfurt are ‘types’ when they are exclusively topotypic and not primary types. A statement in Poropat and Colin (2012, p. 701) attempts to clarify this situation, however, Antonietto et al. (2012, p. 663) compound the confusion by stating that the holotype of Hourcqia angulata salitrensis Krömmelbein and Weber, 1971 is housed in the Senckenberg, which it is not. The confusion may have arisen as a result of a temporary loan of the Krömmelbein and Weber (1971) specimens to Senckenberg.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper presents the preliminary planning of a demonstration pilot for exemplary renovation of an existing building (“Solar House 1 – Campina”) towards nZEB level using Passive House principles and technologies. The “Solar House” was one of the lighthouses of solar energy developments in the ‘80s in Romania, being built in 1977-1978 in Campina (Centre-South Romania) and represented an experimental building using innovative solar technologies for DHW preparation, active and passive space heating. The decision of transforming the existing building in a demonstration pilot nZEB with green materials was taken and the feasibility study is currently underway. The pilot aims to analyse and test, the cost effectiveness of Passive House (PH) technologies integration in a deep renovation process with the view to achieve the fixed nZEB levels, as an exemplary case study demonstrating the benefits and feasibility of applying PH principles and energy performance evaluation in real context. Both approaches of applying the renovation standard EnerPHit and targeting Passive House criteria are discussed together with the nZEB targets, while the analysis of technical (energy performance) and economic (total costs) feasibility is presented. The proposed building will act as a training and consultancy centre in Campina - created as a model for achieving greater energy efficiency and environmental responsibility in Romania.

Abstract (sommario):
A hydraulic fracturing stress determination was carried out during May and June, 1979, in a water well intended for the Geothermal Feasibility Project on the campus of the University of Regina, Saskatchewan. Four intervals between depths of 2062 and 2215 m were fractured successfully, one in the Winnipeg Formation (2034–2083 m), two in the Deadwood Formation (2083–2209 m), and one under the Phanerozoic sequence near the top of the Precambrian basement (2209–2215 m).Over the depth range (2062–2215 m) covered by this hydrofracture experiment, the results and inferences are as follow. Downhole breakdown pressure ranges from 42 to 45 MPa, and downhole shut-in pressure from 35 to 42 MPa. The minimum horizontal stress component, σhmin, is taken as being equal to the corresponding shut-in pressure. The vertical stress component, σv, is assumed to be essentially equal to the overburden pressure and varies from 51 to 56 MPa. Whereas σv and σhmin apparently vary smoothly across the Deadwood Formation, the maximum horizontal component, σhmax, appears to undergo a discontinuity in the upper part of the Deadwood Formation, as σHMAX varies from 40 MPa in the Winnipeg Formation to 53 MPa in the upper part of the Precambrian basement. In so far as seismotectonics is concerned, the physical implications of these measurements are that normal faulting should prevail in the Winnipeg (and overlying) formations whereas strike-slip faulting could occur in the Precambrian basement; however, the latter inference has not been firmly established. Breakdown pressure is a useful guide (upper limit) for the potential geothermal demonstration project. Key words: hydraulic fracture, fracture mechanics, faulting, stresses, in situ, breakdown, shut-in pressure, seismotectonics.

Abstract (sommario):
The importance of chronology is reasserted as a means to achieving history and a sense of temporality. A range of current methods for estimating the dates and durations of archaeological processes and events are considered, including visual inspection of graphs and tables of calibrated dates and the summing of the probability distributions of calibrated dates. These approaches are found wanting. The Bayesian statistical framework is introduced, and a worked example presents simulated radiocarbon dates as a demonstration of the explicit, quantified, probabilistic estimates now possible on a routine basis. Using this example, the reliability of the chronologies presented for the five long barrows considered in this series of papers is explored. It is essential that the ‘informative’ prior beliefs in a chronological model are correct. If they are not, the dating suggested by the model will be incorrect. In contrast, the ‘uninformative’ prior beliefs have to be grossly incorrect before the outputs of the model are importantly wrong. It is also vital that the radiocarbon ages included in a model are accurate, and that their errors are correctly estimated. If they are not, the dating suggested by a model may also be importantly wrong. Strenuous effort and rigorous attention to archaeological and scientific detail are inescapable if reliable chronologies are to be built. The dates presented in the following papers are based on models. ‘All models are wrong, some models are useful’ (Box 1979, 202). We hope readers will find them useful, and will employ ‘worry selectivity’ to determine whether and how each model may be importantly wrong. The questions demand the timetable, and our prehistories deserve both.

Abstract (sommario):
Although models of the pressure–strain term explain many features of nearly uniform homogeneous shear flows, a discrepancy remains (Leslie 1980). It is suggested that the discrepancy is caused by use of an empirical expression for the fluctuation part of the pressure–strain term, the part usually denoted by ϕij,1. The discrepancy is eliminated by replacement of the empirical ϕij,1 with a recent theoretical expression. Relatedly, the Launder, Reece & Rodi (1975) model for the mean-field part ϕij,2 is shown to be a good approximation for both a strongly and weakly sheared flow. This model of ϕij,2 when combined with the theoretical ϕij,1 is found to provide an explanation for experiments of both Champagne, Harris & Corrsin (1970) and Harris, Graham & Corrsin (1977). Full correction requires that deviations from local isotropy be accounted for. Special emphasis is given to a theoretical demonstration that the pressure–strain term does not cause a retun to isotropy but, rather, it resists large anisotropy – a weaker effect.

Abstract (sommario):
Systems management of life-threatening injuries in children and adults is now accepted as state-of-the-art by those who care for trauma victims in the United States and Canada. A few regional trauma systems for adults have had several decades of experience and have recently served as models for inclusion of pediatric trauma.1 In certain instances, notably the state of Pennsylvania, an emergency medical services (EMS) system has come into being with fully integrated adult and children's components. That the National Pediatric Trauma Registry includes more than 12 000 children is indicative of the significant problem of trauma in childhood; the Registry has provided a necessary base for statistical analysis of injury severity and long-term rehabilitation needs.2 Since 1985, several federally funded state demonstration grants for EMS for children (EMSC) have attempted to establish guidelines for patient care and to suggest methods of ongoing monitoring of the effectiveness of these systems, surveillance of quality, and review of patient outcome. A statewide designated pediatric trauma center for Maryland located in The Johns Hopkins Children's Center has been functional for 12 years.3 Data are now available for objective evaluation of the effectiveness and impact of this regional pediatric trauma program. The level of compliance within Maryland's regionalized pediatric trauma system from 1979 through 1986 was recently examined using hospital discharge abstract data routinely recorded for all discharges from 58 acute care hospitals in the state of Maryland.4 Compliance with regionalization was measured by examining (1) the proportion of patients with injuries of varying injury severity scores5,6 who were treated at each of three levels of care (statewide pediatric trauma center, regional trauma center, and community hospital) and (2) the proportion of in-hospital deaths occurring at each level of care.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Synoptic classifications over the Southern Ocean in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica (50°S–Antarctic coast, 150°E–90°W) have been derived from NCEP reanalysis data (1979–2011), producing a set of six synoptic types for the region. These types describe realistic synoptic conditions for the region and represent the moisture-bearing low pressure systems that circulate around Antarctica. The types are described as follows: low Bellingshausen/Amundsen (L-BA), low (L), zonal (Z), low Ross (L-R), ridge (R), and low Amundsen (L-A). Seasonal frequencies of the synoptic types reflect the seasonal zonal shift of the Amundsen Sea low (ASL) and also correlate well with the Southern Oscillation index (SOI) and the southern annular mode (SAM). Variability in the occurrences of the synoptic types L-R and L-BA indicate a shifting of the position of the ASL farther east (west) toward (away from) the Antarctic Peninsula during La Niña (El Niño) and positive (negative) SAM conditions. A joint linear regression of the SOI and SAM indices show the strongest correlations with the types L-BA and L-R in the spring and quantifies the joint forcing effect of these climate cycles on synoptic variability in the region. As a demonstration of how synoptic classification provides links between large-scale atmospheric circulation and local climate parameters, the synoptic types are related to precipitation and temperature at Roosevelt Island, an ice core site on the Ross Ice Shelf (80°S, 160°W). The synoptic types provide quantification of distinct precipitation and temperature regimes at this site, which allows for more fundamental understanding of the precipitation source regions and transport pathways that drive the variability in snow and ice proxies.

Abstract (sommario):
We present a new spectral method for the direct numerical simulation of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence at low magnetic Reynolds number. The originality of our approach is that instead of using traditional bases of functions, it relies on the basis of eigenmodes of the dissipation operator, which represents viscous and Joule dissipation. We apply this idea to the simple case of a periodic domain in the three directions of space, with a homogeneous magnetic field in the ez direction. The basis is then still a subset of the Fourier space, but ordered by growing linear decay rate |λ| (i.e. according to the least dissipative modes). We show that because the lines of constant energy tend to follow those of constant |λ| in the Fourier space, the scaling for the smallest scales |λmax| in a forced flow can be expressed, using this single parameter, as a function of the Reynolds number as $\(\sqrt{1\lambda^{max}|}/(2\upi k_f)\simeq 0.5\Rey^{1/2}\)$, where kf is the forcing wavelength, or as a function of the Grashof number Gf, which gives a non-dimensional measure of the forcing, as |λmax|1/2/(2πkf) ≃ 0.47Gf0.20. This scaling is also found to be consistent with heuristic scalings derived by Alemany et al. (J. Mec., vol. 18, 1979, pp. 277–313) and Pothérat & Alboussière (Phys. Fluids, vol. 15, 2003, pp. 3170–3180) for interaction parameter S ≳ 1, and which we are able to numerically quantify as k⊥max/kf ≃ 0.5Re1/2 and kzmax/kf ≃ 0.8kfRe/Ha. Finally, we show that the set of least dissipative modes gives a relevant prediction for the scale of the first three-dimensional structure to appear in a forced, initially two-dimensional turbulent flow. This completes our numerical demonstration that the least dissipative modes can be used to simulate both two- and three-dimensional low-Rm magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim in this study is to investigate the interface between semantics and pragmatics in relation to the use of the indexical demonstrative ‘haay’ ‘this-S.F.’ in Jordanian Arabic (JA). It is argued here that an analysis of meaning in relation to context-sensitivity inherent in the use of ‘haay’ can give evidence to the view that semantic and pragmatic processes can be distinguished from each other. I have found that the meaning of ‘haay’ consists of three distinct levels: linguistic, semantic, and pragmatic meaning. The denotational and conventional senses of ‘haay’ comprise its linguistic meaning, its semantic meaning is generated when any of the variables in the linguistic meaning is selected in relation to 'narrow context', the pragmatic meaning depends on relating the semantic meaning to an entity in the physical context of interaction. The results of this study support the view that the boundary between semantics and pragmatics can be distinctively demarcated. References Agha, A. (1996). Schema and superposition in spatial deixis. Abstract (sommario):
Percival S. Bailey (1892–1973) was a scholar, neuroscientist, neuropathologist, and neurosurgeon who made decisive contributions in the field of neuro-oncology. Far less known are his groundbreaking insights into understanding hypothalamic physiology through the study of craniopharyngiomas. As one of Harvey W. Cushing’s most talented trainees, Bailey was instrumental in developing Cushing’s project of a histologically based prognostic classification of brain tumors. He worked at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital on and off between 1919 and 1928, owing to frequent clashes with his mentor. A major cause of this long-term conflict was Bailey’s 1921 experimental demonstration of the hypothalamic origin of diabetes insipidus and Fröhlich’s syndrome. This finding challenged Cushing’s view that both alterations were due to pituitary gland insufficiency. In a seminal monograph written with John F. Fulton in 1929, both authors provided the first comprehensive account of the specific hypothalamic disturbances caused by tumors that originated within the infundibulum and third ventricle. The methodical study of Cushing’s craniopharyngioma specimens allowed Bailey to recognize the close contact between these lesions and hypothalamic nuclei, a key concept that Bailey originally advanced for proper surgical planning. This article aims to credit Bailey for his pioneering definition of craniopharyngiomas as tumors with a true intrahypothalamic position.

Abstract (sommario):
In the 1970s in parts of the Middle East and in the Gulf, (United Arab Emirates, Oman and Qatar especially), the burqa or niqab when worn was worn by women from tribal regions only. Otherwise known as a ‘batoola’ this garment is a head and face covering with an area of mesh covering the eyes, another variation is provided by a mask covering the face and nose. Jonathan Raban in 1979 observed such sights in London ‘...it was on the Earl’s Court Road that I first saw the strange beak shaped foil masks of Gulf women...’ There has been a modernist revival in these once rare face coverings for a multiplicity of reasons and correspondingly the wearing of them contain several meanings. The burqa is worn for political, religious and other reasons, but also although not exclusively it is a garment intended to keep women in subjection. Stuart Hall in interpreting the work of Frantz Fanon’s 1960’s writings on the burqa (then called the veil) for Algerian women, explained ‘no sign is fixed in its meaning’emphasising the fluidity of the burqa and also its capacity for appropriation by others. This is also true when considering the symbolic significance of the burqa today. Wearing it is defended as a right to choose, albeit in parts of Asia, for example in Afghanistan in the tribal regions, the burqa is a requirement for women. Whilst in some parts of Africa and the Middle East wearing the burqa is expressly prohibited. In the West and on the streets of London (following recent patterns of migration) the burqa is an increasingly common sight, and whilst it might have been worn by a woman who was subject to the norms of her own society and merely visiting the United Kingdom, many women who choose to settle in the United Kingdom and desire United Kingdom nationality are also wearing the burqa. This demonstration and visible representation of otherness has created anxiety, provoked public debate and criticism, and in France and Belgium, prohibition.
