(farncuski) Les ?difices de culte pa?ens ont ?t? ici consid?r?s en distinguant deux groupes selon leur position par rapport aux remparts. Le premier de ces groupes incluant les ouvrages situ?s en dehors de l'enceinte a d?j? fait l'objet de plusieurs publications de sorte que ce travail se contente de rappeler bri?vement leurs principales caract?ristiques au d?but du texte. Lorsqu'il s'agit du Sirmium intra muros, nonobstant la pr?sence de vestiges de murs massifs et de plastique architecturale d?corative dans la partie centrale de la ville antique autorisant d'envisager la pr?sence de temples pa?ens, l'ensemble de la litt?rature publi?e ne fait aucune mention de tels ?difices. Les r?sultats d'une analyse a posteriori du mat?riel arch?ologique enregistr? dans la documentation conserv?e ? l'Institut arch?ologique de Belgrade, ainsi que l'observation du mat?riel lapidaire et d?coratif des d?p?ts du Mus?e du Srem ? Sremska Mitrovica ont permis ? l'auteur de ce travail de constater (avec toute la r?serve voulue dans ses conclusions) que l'espace situ? ? l'est du forum accueillait, pour le moins quatre temples pa?ens. L'existence de ces ?difices de culte a ?t? situ?e au sein de divers intervalles compris entre le IIe et le IVe si?cle. Il est int?ressant de noter que le plus ancien d'entre eux (IIe si?cle), d?gag? sur le site 42, ?tait dot? d'une construction portante en bois. Un peu plus au nord ont ?t? exhum?s les vestiges d'un ?difice de culte (59) datant du IIIe-IVe si?cle qui pourrait ?tre identifi? avec un fanum gallo-romain, mais cela restera pour l'instant de l'ordre de l'hypoth?se. Plus ? l'est, sur une vaste plate-forme en dalles de marbre ont ?t? ?rig?s vers la fin du IIIe ou au d?but du IVe si?cle deux autres temples (sites 43 et 47). Malheureusement un certain nombre de questions, entre autres relatives ? leur structure et leur d?dicace, ne pourrons ici trouver une r?ponse d?finitive. Abstract (sommario):
Contaminated gas cleaning from finely divided solids is carried out using a new generation of multi-channel design cyclones. The application of these devices are separated and precipitated particles with a minimum diameter up to 2 micrometers, reaching up to 95% cleaning efficiency. Cyclones of such constructions are usually used under usual conditions at elevated temperature and low humidity. Under aggressive conditions, these devices can be clogged, and their recovery is not possible. Further studies are research into the application of constructive solutions to adapt the cyclone gas cleaning of the particulate matter under aggressive conditions. This theoretical evaluation has described the characteristics change of gas flow and particulate matters at different aggressive environment. Such conditions were loudly describe the gas-flow high-temperature range of 50–200 °C and gas-vapor stream, the humidity reaches 70–100%. Estimated aggressive conditions on the gas flow dynamics forces – pressure, resistance and centrifugal, and particulate mechanical – gravitational and adhesion strength. All parameters are evaluated in comparison with the values under normal conditions. Naujos kartos daugiakanaliais ciklonais smulkiadispersės kietosios dalelės pašalinamos iš užterštų dujų. Naudojant šiuos įrenginius, yra atskiriamos ir nusodinamos kietosios dalelės, kurių minimalus skersmuo siekia 2 mikrometrus, taip gaunama iki 95 % valymo efektyvumo. Tokios konstrukcijos ciklonai dažniausiai yra naudojami įprastomis sąlygomis, esant padidintai temperatūrai ir nedideliam drėgniui. Esant agresyvioms aplinkos sąlygoms, šie įrenginiai užsikemša, o jų regeneruoti negalima. Tolesniuose ciklono veikimo parametrų tyrimuose numatoma analizuoti, kaip, taikant konstruktyvius sprendimus, pritaikyti cikloną ir šalinti kietąsias daleles iš dujų esant agresyvioms aplinkos sąlygoms. Šioje teorinėje analizėje yra aprašomas dujų srauto charakteristikų bei kietąsias daleles veikiančių jėgų pokytis esant skirtingai agresyviai aplinkai. Tokios sąlygos buvo apibrėžtos, nustačius 50–200 °C dujų srauto temperatūros intervalą ir tiriant dujų-garų srautą, kurio drėgnis siekė 70–100 %. Įvertinta agresyvių aplinkos sąlygų įtaka, daroma dujų srauto dinamikos jėgoms – slėgio, pasipriešinimo ir išcentrinei. – ir kietųjų dalelių mechaninėms jėgoms – gravitacijos ir adhezijos. Visi vertinami parametrai palyginti su vertėmis normaliomis sąlygomis.

Abstract (sommario):
Dallas has a long history of uneven development. It is the product of excess capital, white planning, and a desire to shape the land into something it is not. Communities in Dallas broke sharply along racial and class lines, and as a result black and white Dallas developed separately. Forces of structural and physical violence largely determined where African American neighborhoods were, and are, located in Dallas. African American, Mexican American, and other low-income communities suffered not only from low housing availability and high rent prices, but also bombings, arson, and other physical threats. When alliances formed between poor whites and their neighbors of color, the construction of a highway or railroad was apt to split a neighborhood and fracture the community. The effects of segregation and discrimination have followed the African American communities in Dallas since their inception. Space for African Americans, who made up almost twenty percent of the population, within the Dallas city limits continued to shrink. In 1940, African American neighborhoods were squeezed into 3.5 square miles within the City and in small communities along the perimeter. Meanwhile, the wealthy sequestered themselves into enclaves within the city, avoiding both minorities and municipal taxes while benefitting from city services. In this paper I explore how this historical discrimination and segregation shaped geographic inequality across Dallas today. Much of the wealth in Dallas is clustered in the north around the Park Cities enclave as illustrated by viewing the property tax values over the city. Low-income, majority African American neighborhoods like Joppa, located in southern Dallas, illustrate the impacts that the flows of capital have on livelihoods. South Dallas experienced a sharp decrease in population as residents moved to the suburbs in the 1960s and has since been underdeveloped. Joppa, a small, historically neglected, neighborhood has remained isolated until recently. Developers are interested in Joppa for its cheap, empty lots, and valuable proximity to booming downtown Dallas and the Trinity River Corridor. Gentrification is a concern for the neighborhood; residents have a desire to revitalize their neighborhood on their own terms, not developers’. This research will help to visualize and amplify the continued material effects of a history Dallas is trying to make invisible.

Rationalities endemic to modernity entail an implicit spatial imaginary of networks. Additionally, modernity envisages nature as an external domain that is discoverable by science and domesticable through technology in order to drive economic productivity. This article examines Grapevine Reservoir as an artifact of modernity. Through an examination of Dallas-based representations of Denton Creek space, we seek to demonstrate that the area was discursively produced as a distal node of the Dallas network: as nothing more than a point-source for urban water. And as water flowed into Dallas, the city flowed outward to Grapevine along the same conduit. We draw on archival data from a major local newspaper during the proposal and construction phases of the reservoir (1921–1954), as well as key government documents prepared by the US Congress and US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in the 1940s. Texts were subjected to discourse analysis, to examine how urban interests rationalized Denton Creek space.

UNO STUDIO SULLA COSTRUZIONE DEI NURAGHI DELLA SARDEGNALo studio della struttura dei nuraghi è basato su accurate misurazioni di 24 volte in 15 monumenti. La parte principale analizza attraverso lo studio della loro forma la stabilità strutturale delle volte a modiglioni. La teoria, basata sulle condizioni necessarie alla stabilità, prevede che le volte debbano avere la forma:y = cxdI dati ricavati dalle volte concordano strettamente con questa previsione. Quindi le volte sono raggruppate secondo il valore dell'esponente d e la presenza o l'assenza di un ‘punto di variazione’ nella volta. Gruppi geografici sono riconosciuti. L'articolo discute anche dettagli generici della struttura e della forma dei nuraghi. L'appendice presenta reperti da un saggio di scavo al Nuraghe Sant'Antine, con importanti risultati riguardanti la data del monumento e la costruzione delle sue fondamenta.

A recently completed survey of office tenants in North Dallas, Texas, presented respondents with two hypothetical situations, each combining a temporary increase in commuting time with a temporary reduction in office rent. Respondents were asked whether the overall effect on their business would be positive, negative, or neutral. Although hypothetical, the questions were also topical. The respondents were all in the vicinity of a major highway project, the Dallas High Five Interchange, the construction of which has caused delays for some travelers. Econometric analysis of the survey responses provided estimates of the cost these office tenants attach to a temporary increase in the commuting time of their employees. This paper explains the derivation of these estimates and provides other findings relevant to their interpretation. The paper also motivates analysis by explaining how estimates of this sort can promote public awareness of the costs and benefits of highway projects.

Dalle de verre windows consist of thick slabs of coloured glass set in a matrix of reinforced concrete. The invention of this special art form is closely linked to the developments in modern architecture in the first half of the 20th century that are characterized by using new technologies such as steel-frame construction, reinforced concrete and the increasing use of glass. Many of these windows are showing damage, some of it severe. Until now, the causes of damage have hardly been investigated and there is still no practical and suitable approach to the analysis of the state of conservation of dalle de verre glazings. One of the main objectives of an interdisciplinary project (2019–2021) was therefore to evaluate the potential of non-destructive techniques for the characterisation of and identification of damage of dalle the verre windows in their structural, physical and climatic context. Various non-destructive methods (Ground-Penetrating Radar, Electric resistivity, Half-cell potential, Ultrasonics, Induction, Magnet and Thermography) have been tested on two prominent dalle de verre examples: the windows created by Fernand Léger for the church of Saint-Germain d’Auxerre in Courfaivre (Swiss Jura mountains) and the large tripartite by Alexandre Cingria once decorating the choir window church of the Franciscan monastery at Fribourg, Switzerland. The results of the analyses presented in this paper provide valuable information on the advantages and limitations as well as the costs of the methods used.

Reconstruction of the Dallas North Central Expressway is one of the largest construction projects undertaken by the Texas Department of Transportation. The $450 million, 18-km highway and light-rail corridor is being stage constructed under heavy commuting and Interstate traffic and a variety of strategies have been undertaken to mitigate the adverse impacts on traffic flow and businesses. The findings of various surveys conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the business mitigation policies, including the impact on sales and access of business sales data reported to the state comptroller, an examination of multitenant occupancy rates for office space in the catchment area, and an analysis of businesses that either closed or opened are reported here. Somewhat surprisingly, more businesses opened than closed during construction. Recommendations are made on which policies can be utilized in other metropolitan areas of Texas and the United States.

The paper describes the Renaissance phenomenon and name,its peculiarities and connection with innovations in different areas of life of the Lithuanian society and with historic personalities. Preconditions for the phenomenon s existance occurred in 1518–1655. Circumstances hindering cognoscibility of the phenomenon are analysed. The construction and decoration technique of the Renaissance are characterized. The method of material selection for this paper is described. The discovered cases of Renaissance construction and reconstruction in Vilnius are briefly reviewed. It is found that Renaissance construction determined the urban framework of Vilnius historic part. Santrauka Aprašoma renesanso, kaip reiškinio, jo pavadinimo kilmė ir apraiškos kultūros istorijoje, požymiai, sąsajos su naujovėmis skirtingose Lietuvos visuomenės gyvenimo srityse ir su istorinėmis asmenybėmis, prielaidos reiškiniui gyvuoti, buvusios nuo 1518 m. iki 1655 m. Analizuojamos reiškinio pažinumą apsunkinančios aplinkybės. Apibūdinama Renesanso laikotarpio statybos ir puošybos technika. Apibūdinamas medžiagos atrankos straipsniui metodas. Pateikiami išaiškinti Vilniaus Renesanso laikotarpio statybų ir rekonstrukcijų atvejai. Nustatyta, kad šio laikotarpio statyba nulėmė Vilnius istorinės dalies urbanistinį karkasą.

Risk audit is often poorly implemented in construction projects because of the absence of constant auditing of risks by construction project managers. Construction companies are experiencing large financial deficits because of managers failing to audit and monitor project risks. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the utilization of risk audit correlates with project success in construction projects. An electronic survey instrument was used to collect data from a sample of 50 construction project managers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas in the United States. Spearman's rho correlational analysis and simple logistic regressions were used to examine the relationship between risk audit and project success. The results of this study indicated that there is a positive and significant association between risk audit and project success in terms of schedule performance, cost performance, customer satisfaction, and business success. One of the recommendations presented in this study was to expand the study to developing countries to see whether the findings from the study remain the same. The study concluded that construction organizations should regularly consider the importance and usage of risk audit techniques to improve the success rate of a project.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to conduct life-cycle cost analysis of a short-haul underground freight transportation (UFT) system for the Dallas Fort Worth international airport. Design/methodology/approach The research approach includes: identifying the cost components of the proposed airport UFT system; estimating life-cycle cost (LCC) of system components using various methods; determining life-cycle cash flows; evaluating the reliability of the results using sensitivity analysis; and assessing the validity of the results using analogues cases. Findings Although the capital cost of constructing an airport UFT system seems to be the largest cost of such innovative projects, annual costs for running the system are more significant, taking a life-cycle perspective. System administrative cost, tunnel operation and maintenance, and tunnel construction cost are the principle cost components of the UFT system representing approximately 46, 24 and 19 percent of the total LCC, respectively. The shipping cost is estimated to be $4.14 per ton-mile. Although this cost is more than the cost of transporting cargos by trucks, the implementation of UFT systems could be financially justified considering their numerous benefits. Originality/value This paper, for the first time, helps capital planners understand the LCC of an airport UFT system with no or limited past experience, and to consider such innovative solutions to address airport congestion issues.

Abstract (sommario):
The excessive use of energy in buildings due to increased populations and economic development leads to more greenhouse gas emissions, which affect climate change and global warming. Changes in prevailing outdoor weather conditions significantly affect the energy systems of buildings through increased cooling and decreased heating. In this paper, 30 years of data of dry and wet bulb temperatures (1990–2020) with a time interval of 3 h were considered in order to estimate the climatic outdoor design conditions in the cities of Dallas‒Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio in the state of Texas. The results suggest that the dry bulb temperature (DBT) had significantly higher increases in Dallas–Fort Worth (2.37 °C) than the wet bulb temperature (WBT) in Houston (4.1 °C) during the study period. Furthermore, this study analyzed the effects of climate change on cooling degree hours (CDH) and heating degree hours (HDH) and the results suggest the most significant drop in HDH in Dallas–Fort Worth with a maximum CDH fluctuation as compared to other two cities. The effect of climate change on the performance of cooling systems is also investigated in this study via direct evaporative coolers (DECs) and direct‒indirect evaporative coolers (IDEC), which do not perform well in the selected cities. In contrast, absorption system (Abs) and vapor compression (VC) systems show an increase in the number of additional loads. The second part of this study is related to the future projection using the ARIMA model, which suggests that DBT would rise significantly in Houston (from 37.18 °C to 37.56 °C) and Dallas–Fort Worth (39.1 °C to 39.57 °C) while diminishing in San Antonio (from 34.81 °C to 33.95 °C) from 2020 to 2030. In contrast, WBT will experience an upward trend in Houston (from 36.06 °C to 37.71 °C) and Dallas–Fort Worth (from 31.32 °C to 31.38 °C) and a downward trend in San Antonio (from 32.43 °C to 31.97 °C) during 2020–2030. Additionally, the future performance prediction of Abs and VC systems is also performed, which reveals that the amount of additional load required is significantly higher in 2030 compared to 2020 and is more prominent in Houston. Conversely, amount of additional load required for cooling systems in San Antonio shows a decreasing trend in 2030.

Risk monitoring and control is often poorly implemented in construction projects because of a failure to monitor and manage identified risks. Construction companies experience significant losses due to project managers' lack of project risk monitoring and control in construction projects. Most studies have concentrated on risk identification, risk assessment, and risk analysis processes while neglecting crucial risk management processes of risk control, risk monitoring, and risk response. The lack of research on these three crucial processes highlights a gap in the literature concerning how these processes can increase the delivery of successful projects. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the utilization of project risk monitoring and control practices was related to project success in construction projects in the United States. An electronic survey instrument was used to collect data from a sample of 50 construction project managers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in the state of Texas, in the United States. Spearman rho correlation analysis was used to examine the relationship between project risk monitoring and control practices and project success. The results of this study indicated that all project risk monitoring and control practices, including risk reassessment, risk audits, contingency reserves analysis, and risk status meetings, were significantly and positively related to project success in construction projects. One of the recommendations presented in this study was that future research should conduct the same study in developing countries to see if the study’s findings remain the same and generalizable. The study concluded that construction organizations should regularly consider the importance and usage of project risk monitoring and control practices and apply them to improve the success rate of a project.

An innovative financing program for a toll project in Texas that has been financed and will be constructed by a joint-venture team composed of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the Texas Turnpike Authority (TTA) is described. The President George Bush Turnpike (State Highway 190) will connect 42.5 km (26.4 mi) of suburbs north of the city of Dallas. The project has been in various stages of planning and design since the late 1960s. Each agency working alone could not complete SH-190 in a timely and cost-effective fashion. Exploiting changes made to the state constitution in 1991 and maximizing the use of the innovative financing provision of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act, TxDOT, TTA, and FHWA in partnership developed a financing structure to accelerate the construction of this project.

The article analyzes changes in energy demand for a greenhouse. The worked out solution to the construction of the building is a partially glazed greenhouse having a glazed roof and open vertical barriers. Design Builder software has been applied for analytical calculations and greenhouse modelling as well as for introducing changes in annual energy demand and establishing temperature variations and regime. The paper reviews the obtained results and diagrams, performs analysis and draws conclusions. Santrauka Straipsnyje nagrinėjamas energijos poreikių kitimas šiltnamyje. Pasirinktas šiltnamio konstrukcinis sprendimas – iš dalies įstiklintas šiltnamis. Tai toks šiltnamio variantas, kai įstiklintas statinio stogas, o vertikalios atitvaros neįstiklintos. Atlikti analitiniai skaičiavimai ir šiltnamis sumodeliuotas programa DesignBuilder. Nagrinėtas energijos poreikių kitimas per metus, temperatūrų kitimas, patalpų temperatūros režimas, naudojant minėtą kompiuterinę programą. Apžvelgti gauti rezultatai, diagramos, atlikta analizė, padarytos išvados.

On propose d’y retrouver une formule de gestion du calendrier luni-solaire, documentée jusqu’ici seulement par une dalle gravée de Knowth en Irlande, du IVe millénaire av. J.-C., un pectoral de Slovaquie de la fin du IIe millénaire et le calendrier gallo-romain de Coligny, du IIe siècle après J.-C. La recherche de son origine s’appuie sur une fibule de Sanzeno (Italie), très proche par la complexité de sa construction et certains détails techniques. Elle suggère une origine centre-alpine de la première moitié du Ve siècle av. J.-C. plutôt que balkanique.

The combination of concrete, asphalt, large buildings, lack of surface water, and heat inputs from industry, automobiles, and poorly insulated buildings result in warmer temperatures in urban environments. This effect is most pronounced in winter minimum temperatures and may cause changes in local plant hardiness zone designations. We obtained minimum temperatures for the years 1974–96 from NOAA and the Office of the State Climatologist of Texas for all recording stations in the counties in and immediately adjacent to the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas (D/FW), metroplex to compare to the 1990 USDA plant hardiness zone map. These data were averaged and analyzed in two groups, 1974–86, which correspond to the 1990 USDA map, and the subsequent years, 1987–96. Stations that did not include a minimum of 15 years of data or anomalies that could be attributed to microclimatic phenomena were discarded. Minimum temperatures were averaged and a contour map was created using TNT Lite software. This map was overlaid on a TIGER map that included county lines and major roadways. The 1974–86 map illustrated only one discrepancy with the 1990 USDA map, the inclusion of 8a temperatures for most of the Tarrant county. Changes in the 1987–96 map included the further expansion of 8a westward into Parker county and an 8b zone in the downtown/Love Field area of Dallas. These changes corresponded well with increased construction and human activity in these areas over the past decade. These changes also help explain variations in low-temperature damage of several ornamental plant species reported in previous studies.

Aircraft were to play a decisive role in the short career of Robert Smithson. In 1969, when he published his article Aerial Art, Walther Prokosch, an architect specializing in aviation, put him in contact with TAMS engineering. This gave rise to his involvement in a land altering operation as vertiginous and brutal as the construction of Dallas Fort-Worth International Airport. At that point Smithson became aware of the human capacity to transform Mother Earth and the importance of contemplation from the air. He incorporated these interests into his artistic creation, thus paving the way for earthwork, crucial to the evolution of Land Art. The study of the documents included among Robert Smithson’s Papers at the Smithsonian Museum of American Art allows us to reconstruct a history that shared interests and concerns with Moholy-Nagy’s New Vision or Le Corbusier’s Loi du Méandre.

Texas has the highest rate of the U.S energy related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and transportation is one of the major contributors. The Houston–Dallas corridor is the busiest routes in Texas. Recently, the development of an intercity High-Speed Rail System (HSR) with Shinkansen N700 series trains has commenced. This study builds the life cycle inventories for vehicles and infrastructure in the HSR system, and conducts a preliminary environmental life cycle assessment. Results indicate that over the design life of the HSR system the total GHG emissions from the vehicle life-time are 9.695 kgCO2eq/VKT, and fossil-fuel usage during vehicle operation is the primary contributor (97%). For the infrastructure, total life-time GHG emissions are 239 kgCO2eq/VKT, out of which, 94% are from the construction stage. Infrastructure is the dominant contributor to end-point impacts in human health category, with 58% of total impact across all damage categories.

An experimental study was carried out to assess the stabilizing action of the friction between concrete slab and steel beams in noncomposite constructions. Slender beams, sensitive to lateral torsional buckling, were used in the experimental work. The results show that the friction is sufficient to prevent lateral torsional buckling of the steel beams. However, the flexural stiffness was not significantly increased so that friction alone is not sufficient to develop a composite action. To increase the frictional effect, the concrete slab was linked to the steel beams by two types of connectors. Additional tests were carried out to verify the efficiency of these connectors. The importance of performance based benchmarking has become a necessity in a modern construction company and presents a constant challenge for the construction industry. The aim of this paper is to elaborate significance, role and types of Key Performance Indicators (KPI) in the construction industry and show how different management perspectives perceive the indicators. A literature review was carried out in order to generate a listing of KPIs, used among academe and the industry. Afterwards, using surveys and semi‐structured interviews, the data was gathered from more than 30 South‐East European construction companies. Results were analyzed, producing a final set of 37 indicators. This study identified a low level of awareness of KPI models and performance management processes among the companies. Furthermore, the analysis showed a substantial difference in perception of KPIs among investors, consultants and contractors, which consequently led to a compiling list of KPIs. The top ten KPI's are: Quality, Cost, Number of investor interferences, Changes in project support, Time increase, Client satisfaction, Employees’ satisfaction, Innovation and learning, Time and Identification of client's interest. The paper concludes with final remarks and guidelines for the implementation of KPIs in practice. Santrauka Šiuolaikineje statybos imoneje efektyvumu pagristo lyginimo svarba jau yra neišvengiama, o statybu pramonei tai reiškia nuolatinius iššūkius. Šiuo darbu siekiama išnagrineti pagrindiniu statybu sektoriaus veiklos rodikliu (PVR) reikšme, vaidmeni ir rūšis bei pademonstruoti, kaip šie rodikliai vertinami remiantis skirtingais vadybos požiūriais. Apžvelgta literatūra, siekiant sudaryti akademineje aplinkoje ir pramoneje naudojamu PVR saraša. Pasitelkus apklausas ir iš dalies struktūrinius pokalbius, buvo surinkti duomenys iš daugiau kaip 30 pietryčiu Europos statybos imoniu. Išanalizavus rezultatus gautas galutinis 37 rodikliu rinkinys. Šiame tyrime nustatyta, kad imones menkai ka težino apie PVR modelius ir efektyvumo valdymo procesus. Be to, paaiškejo, kad investuotojai, konsultantai ir rangovai PVR suvokia gana skirtingai, ir del to teko sudaryti PVR saraša. Dešimt pagrindiniu PVR yra šie: kokybe, kaina, investuotojo kišimosi atveju skaičius, pasikeitusi parama projektui, nukelti terminai, kliento pasitenkinimas, darbuotoju pasitenkinimas, naujoves ir mokymasis, laikas, kliento interesu nustatymas. Darbo pabaigoje pateikiamos baigiamosios pastabos ir PVR taikymo praktikoje rekomendacijos.

AbstractThe literature concerning recreational landscapes is substantial, but its contents are heavily biased towards the parks and gardens of the aristocratic and land-owning classes. Surprisingly, very little of a landscape historical nature has been published on the countrysides created and maintained for the purpose of grouse shooting, even though the areas concerned are some of the most admired and most ecologically sensitive parts of Britain. The pursuit of grouse shooting has been followed in the Yorkshire Dales for more than 250 years and the activity (in this context ‘sport’ is an emotive term) and its varied impacts upon the landscape have been conditioned by a variety of factors. Some are social, and relate to perceptions of what constitute acceptable forms of upper class recreation and association; some are technological and involve the development of firearms; some are logistical and pertain to improvements in access to the upland grouse moors, while some are ecological and concern the improvement and deterioration of the habitat and fluctuations in the grouse population. All these factors found expression in the landscape, on the grand scale, by the systematic burning, swaling or swiddening of the moors and at the local level, for example, by constructing butts in relation to topography, prevailing wind direction and the flight paths favoured by the game.

Objectives: Complex lymphatic anomalies (CLAs) are rare diseases with variable clinical manifestations caused by the abnormal development of lymphatic vessels. The Lymphatic Malformation Institute (LMI), Lymphangiomatosis & Gorham’s Disease Alliance (LGDA), and LGD Alliance Europe sponsored an international conference on CLAs so leaders in the field could discuss recent advances in research on CLAs. Methods: The conference occurred in Dallas, Texas, between September 29th and September 30th, 2023. The event had 22 distinguished speakers and 38 attendees. Additional researchers, clinicians, and patients attended the conference virtually. Results: In this article, we summarize the key takeaways from the meeting. The conference emphasized the crucial role of the patient voice in guiding research, and attendees heard stories from patients and parents of children with CLAs. The conference covered topics such as the genetic causes of CLAs, preclinical models, clinical advances, new technologies for CLA research, lymphatic imaging, and patient-centered research. Videos of all the presentations can be found on the LGDA website. Conclusions: The meeting revealed that while progress has been made, many challenges still exist surrounding the diagnosis and treatment of CLAs. Sustained research efforts are necessary to fill the gaps in knowledge and improve the care and quality of life of CLA patients.

Ways to improve the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT’s) current vehicle warning light policy were researched. Tasks included a survey of motorist perceptions of different warning light color combinations and also field studies of the effect of selected color combinations on traffic behavior. The motorist survey, conducted at driver licensing stations in Dallas–Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Houston, indicated that the combination of blue and amber lights implied a slightly greater sense of hazard to motorists than did the amber light alone. However, this greater sense of hazard did not necessarily translate into differences in how motorists believed they needed to respond. Field studies conducted at freeway locations in San Antonio and Houston investigated the effect of selected, alternative vehicle warning-light color combinations on vehicle speeds, lane choice, and braking activity. Researchers found significant reductions in speeds at a few sites—but not all—for the amber and blue warning light color combination when compared with speeds observed when only an amber warning light was used. In addition, the data suggested a trend toward increased brake usage for the red, amber, and blue light configuration compared with the amber-light-only configuration. There also was evidence that the amber-and-blue light configuration slightly increased the frequency of brake applications. Furthermore, the use of a law enforcement vehicle during testing resulted in significantly more brake-light activations than did a TxDOT courtesy patrol vehicle outfitted with the same warning light colors.

The relationship between a country's level of activity in the construction industry and its stage of economic development is a complex one. Several studies over the last forty years, based mainly on cross sectional data, found a positive association between national income and several measures of the construction industry activity. early studies were concerned with the role of the construction sector, as part of physical capital, in the promotion of economic growth and development. a dominant paradigm that later emerged is the ‘Bon curve’ or the inverted U-shaped pattern of development. More recent research, based on longitudinal analysis, has also pointed to the non-linear relationship between the share of construction in GDP and the level of income per capita. Using time-series data drawn from the United nations, this study applies an econometric methodology to assess the validity of the underlying propositions in a low-middle income economy-Cape Verde—over the long period of 38 years. The findings are in line with the assumptions that in the upward growth trend in developing countries, the pattern of the construction industry tends to follow that of the general economy. Ankstyvieji tyrimai buvo susiję su statybos sektoriaus, kaip fizinio kapitalo dalies, vaidmeniu skatinant ekonominį augimą ir plėtrą. Vėlesnis pavyzdys yra „Bon kreivė” arba apverstos U raidės formos plėtros modelis. Naujausi tyrimai, paremti longitudine analize, taip pat buvo orientuoti į nelinijinius ryšius tarp statybosdalies BVP ir pajamų, tenkančių vienam gyventojui, lygio. Naudojantis Jungtinių Tautų duomenimis, šiame tyrime taikoma ekonometrinė metodika, kuria siekiama įvertinti pagrindinius projektus mažas ir vidutines pajamas gaunančioje valstybėje—Žaliajame Kyšulyje—per 38 metų laikotarpį. For centuries, the urban fabric of Florence has been, and continues to be, shaped by a Dantean topography that includes monuments as seen by Dante, but also by works created ex novo or built according to the principles of sytlistic restoration. The article uses this framework to reflect on new and restored works that pay homage to Dante by focusing on the long-term architectural and urban-landscape transformations favoured by Dante commemorations, from the first, Risorgimento-era centennial in 1865, to that of 2021. The emblematic cases addressed regard urban decoration (Enrico Pazzi’s statue in Piazza Santa Croce), new constructions (National Central Library of Florence), and Dantean topography (Dante’s House and Dante’s Star). In every era between 1865 and 2021 works honouring Dante have served to raise awareness of topical issues. On the other hand, as Pierre Nora wrote, “Toute commémoration est une transformation de l’événement passé au service des besoins du présent”.

In April 2004, a scanning tour of Japan, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and France was made to obtain information about bridge construction methods being used to minimize traffic disruption, improve work zone safety, minimize environmental impact, improve constructibility, increase quality, and lower life-cycle costs. From information obtained from the tour, 10 technologies were identified for further consideration and possible implementation into U.S. practices. These included two technologies that allow bridges to be built off site and then moved to their final location in a short time, three superstructure systems and four deck systems that facilitate faster and safer construction, and one substructure system. The two technologies for moving bridges were self-propelled modular transporters and other moving systems, including skidding or sliding, incremental launching, floating, rotating, and lifting of bridges into place. The superstructure systems included a precast concrete deck system known as the Poutre Dalle system, the use of partial-depth concrete decks prefabricated on steel or concrete beams, and U-shaped precast concrete segments with transverse ribs. Poor project requirements definition and management (RDM) is one of the major causes of project failure. However, many organizations do not adequately manage a project's requirements leading to a poor design basis. Thus, quality of requirements is critical to the success of any construction project. The primary purpose of this research was to investigate the mediating effect of requirements quality on the relationship between RDM practice and project performance. The second objective was to determine whether the impact of RDM practice on project performance was moderated by project characteristics. A three-phase approach was employed to investigate construction projects in the Taiwanese building industry. The testing supports a role for requirements quality as a partial mediator in the relationship between RDM practice and project performance. The findings also indicate that project characteristics have a moderating effect on the relationship between requirements quality and overall project performance. Santrauka Prastai apibrėžti ir valdomi projekto reikalavimai – viena iš pagrindinių projekto nesėkmės priežasčių. Tačiau daug organizacijų neskiria pakankamai dėmesio projekto reikalavimų valdymui, todėl sukuriamas prastas projektavimo pagrindas. Taigi kokybės reikalavimai yra esminis sėkmės garantas bet kuriame statybų projekte. Pagrindinis šio tyrimo tikslas – išnagrinėti, kaip reikalavimų kokybė veikia jų apibrėžimo ir valdymo ryšį su projekto efektyvumu. Antrasis tikslas – nustatyti, ar projekto savybės mažina reikalavimų apibrėžimo ir valdymo poveikį projekto efektyvumui. Pritaikius trijų etapų metodą, išnagrinėti statybų projektai Taivano statybų sektoriuje. Bandymai patvirtino, kad reikalavimų kokybė iš dalies keičia jų apibrėžimo ir valdymo ryšį su projekto efektyvumu. Išvados taip pat rodo, kad projekto savybės riboja reikalavimų kokybės bendram projekto efektyvumui poveikį.

Nonlinear interactions in the dendritic tree play a key role in neural computation. Nevertheless, modeling frameworks aimed at the construction of large-scale, functional spiking neural networks, such as the Neural Engineering Framework, tend to assume a linear superposition of postsynaptic currents. In this letter, we present a series of extensions to the Neural Engineering Framework that facilitate the construction of networks incorporating Dale's principle and nonlinear conductance-based synapses. We apply these extensions to a two-compartment LIF neuron that can be seen as a simple model of passive dendritic computation. We show that it is possible to incorporate neuron models with input-dependent nonlinearities into the Neural Engineering Framework without compromising high-level function and that nonlinear postsynaptic currents can be systematically exploited to compute a wide variety of multivariate, band-limited functions, including the Euclidean norm, controlled shunting, and nonnegative multiplication. By avoiding an additional source of spike noise, the function approximation accuracy of a single layer of two-compartment LIF neurons is on a par with or even surpasses that of two-layer spiking neural networks up to a certain target function bandwidth.

In computational neural network models, neurons are usually allowed to excite some and inhibit other neurons, depending on the weight of their synaptic connections. The traditional way to transform such networks into networks that obey Dale's law (i.e., a neuron can either excite or inhibit) is to accompany each excitatory neuron with an inhibitory one through which inhibitory signals are mediated. However, this requires an equal number of excitatory and inhibitory neurons, whereas a realistic number of inhibitory neurons is much smaller. In this letter, we propose a model of nonlinear interaction of inhibitory synapses on dendritic compartments of excitatory neurons that allows the excitatory neurons to mediate inhibitory signals through a subset of the inhibitory population. With this construction, the number of required inhibitory neurons can be reduced tremendously.

In Dallas Fort Worth (DFW), sewage is treated with a combination of anaerobic digestion, effluent filtration and lime stabilization to create biosolids which are then composted, landfilled, or land applied. The current treatment procedure has certain concerns including emissions or accumulation of odors, pathogens, nutrients, metals, and pharmaceutical products.<br/> An alternative method, the Slurry Injection technique, enables the digestion of biosolids in the deep earth and can replace the current practice of wastewater treatment or disposal in a much more environmentally friendly and cost-efficient manner. By completely sequestering methane and CO2 into deep geologic formations which are produced as biosolids breakdown, reduces the greenhouse gas emissions and enables the operator to create greenhouse gas emission offset credits which can be marketed to offset the operating costs.<br/> The economic, environmental, and technical aspects of building a new biosolids slurry injection facility in DFW, includes both the surface construction requirements as well as the subsurface strata evaluation for containment assurance. For the subsurface aspects, a geomechanical and stress analysis is performed on the Atoka formation (near the city of Fort Worth) and it confirms a confining layer above and below the injection zone to keep the waste contained for permanent storage.

The given article considers results of experimental measurements, productivity comparison and master controller executive system of flat-plate solar collector with thermosiphon circulation and flat solar collector with special chemical coating. There has been developed master controllers control module, which receives data from temperature and lighting sensors, obtained in operation process. The aim of the research is getting the solar collectors? optimal parameters, representing maximal usage performance index, controllability, as well as, construction type, allowing energy saving. In the recent years flat-plate solar collectors with chemical coating are characterized with higher efficiency in real conditions usage. The developed master controllers? executive system is used for monitoring the installation?s main parameters, as well, it permits to compare characteristics of solar collector with thermosiphon circulation to those of flat-plate solar collector with chemical coating. The obtained experimental data has shown, that flat solar collectors, using chemical coating as a transfer medium in solar heat supply system, have an advantage in the context of usage effectiveness. The heat output and water heating in a flat solar collector are calculated, which vary depending on the intensity of solar radiation. The thermal efficiency of a flat solar collector with a thermosiphon tank based on the Mojo V3 platform using Dallas sensors is calculated.

Fatigue of airport pavements is an important consideration in the analysis of high-traffic pavements. The current pavement condition index (PCI) method of pavement evaluation does not adequately evaluate fatigue cracking of airport pavements and should be considered for modification. Recent field inspections by the authors of Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport, Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport, and Albuquerque International Sunport have shown the fatigue cracking in thick concrete pavements to be prevalent. However, it is not normally recorded in a normal PCI inspection because the crack widths are less than 3 mm (1/8 in.). A properly designed, constructed, and maintained pavement should theoretically fail only in fatigue because all other distresses caused by construction deficiencies, material deficiencies, environmental distresses, and maintenance deficiencies would be avoided. Therefore, it is important for the management of airport pavements that receive high levels of traffic to consider fatiguecracking distress. In practice, it is not possible to sample 100 percent of pavements to fully evaluate all hairline cracking. However, a geographical distribution of pavement control sections can be established and monitored for changes over time. The PCI should be revised or a new distress identification method should be developed to account for fatigue cracking.

Multi-level multi-channel cyclone – the lately designed air cleaning device that can remove ultra-fine 20 μm particulatematter (PM) from dusted air and reach over 95% of the overall cleaning efficiency. Multi-channel cyclone technology is based on centrifugal forces and has the resulting additional filtering process operation. Multi-level structure of cyclone allows to achieve higher air flow cleaning capacity at the same dimensions of the device, thus saving installation space required for the job, production and operating costs. Studies have examined the air flow parameters change in one–, two– and three–levels multichannel cyclone. These constructions differ according to the productivity of cleaned air under the constant peripheral and transitional (50/50 case) air flow relations. Accordance with the results of air flow dynamics – velocity distribution of multi-channel cyclone, aerodynamic resistance and efficiency can be judged on the flow turbulence, the flow channel cross-section and select the most appropriate application. Cleaning efficiency studies were carried out using fine granite and wood ashes PM. The maximum cleaning efficiency was 93.3%, at an average of 4.5 g/m3, the aerodynamic resistance was equal to 1525 Pa. Nagrinėjami daugialygiai daugiakanaliai ciklonai – naujos kartos oro valymo įrenginiai, galintys pašalinti iš užterštų oro srautų ypač smulkias kietąsias daleles nuo 2 mikronų dydžio bei pasiekti virš 95 % bendrą valymo efektyvumą. Daugiakanalių ciklonų darbas pagrįstas išcentrinių jėgų bei papildomai atsirandančio filtracijos proceso veikimu. Daugialygio ciklono konstrukcija leidžia pasiekti didesnio valomo oro srauto debitą, esant tiems patiems įrenginio matmenims, taip sutaupant įrenginio darbui reikalingą plotą, gamybos bei eksploatacines išlaidas. Atliktuose tyrimuose nagrinėjamas oro srauto parametrų kitimas vieno, dviejų ir trijų lygių daugiakanaliame ciklone, kintant valomo oro debitui, esant tolygiam 50/50 periferinio/tranzitinio oro srauto santykiui. Pagal gautą oro srauto dinamiką, greičių pasiskirstymą daugiakanalio ciklono kanaluose, nustatytą pasipriešinimą bei valymo efektyvumą galima spręsti apie srauto turbulentiškumą, srautų judėjimą kanalų skerspjūviuose ir parinkti tinkamiausią pritaikymą. Valymo efektyvumo tyrimai atlikti panaudojant granito bei medienos pelenų ypač smulkias kietąsias daleles. Didžiausias valymo efektyvumas siekė 93,3 %, esant vidutinei kietųjų dalelių 4,5 g/m3 koncentracijai, kai aerodinaminis pasipriešinimas buvo lygus 1525 Pa.

In particolare, i dimostrativi questo e quello all’interno di alcune specifiche configurazioni sintattico-discorsive possono assumere funzione valutativa e intensificare o mitigare gli attributi qualitativi del referente, facendo leva su conoscenze realmente condivise dai parlanti o presupposte come tali. Tramite l’analisi di dati autentici estratti dal webcorpus itTenTen20 e adottando un approccio misto (corpus-driven e corpus-based), ci proponiamo di descrivere i processi inferenziali che permettono all’interlocutore di attivare la lettura valutativa dei deittici in due particolari costruzioni: [quel N lì] e [(N1) non è (che sia) questo N2]. “We are not these experts”. Evaluative uses of proximal and distal deictics In this contribution, we intend to investigate two Italian constructions in which proximal and distal deictics, starting from their original functions, have developed additional discursive-pragmatic functions. In particular, the demonstratives questo ‘this’ and quello ‘that’ within some specific syntactic and discursive configurations can take on evaluative functions. They can intensify or mitigate the qualitative attributes of the referent, drawing on the knowledge shared by the speakers or presupposed as such. Through the analysis of authentic data from the itTenTen20 webcorpus and adopting a mixed approach (both corpus-driven and corpus-based), we aim to describe the inferential processes that enable the interlocutor to activate the evaluative reading of deictics in two specific constructions: [quel N lì] and [(N1) non è (che sia) questo N2].

Krūtų rekonstrukcija – tai chirurginė procedūra, skirta moterims, kurioms buvo atlikta mastektomija arba kurios neteko didelės krūtų audinio dalies dėl traumos ar įgimtų anomalijų. Procedūra siekiama atkurti krūtų išvaizdą ir simetriją, gerinti pacientės fizinę ir emocinę savijautą. Krūtų rekonstrukcijos indikacijos yra krūties vėžį išgy­venusios moterys, siekiančios atkurti savo kūno įvaizdį, sustiprinti savigarbą ir susigrąžinti moteriškumo jausmą. Procedūra naudinga ir toms, kurių krūtys deformuotos ar nesimetriškos, nes joms suformuojama labiau subalan­suota ir natūraliai atrodanti krūtinė. Sprendimas atlikti krūtų rekonstrukciją, nesvarbu, ar tai būtų neatidėliotina, ar vėlyvoji procedūra, yra labai asmeniškas, nulemtas įvairių aplinkybių, kurias reikia tinkamai įvertinti.

As important geospatial data, point cloud collected from an aerial laser scanner (ALS) provides three-dimensional (3D) information for the study of the distribution of typical urban land cover, which is critical in the construction of a “digital city”. However, existing point cloud classification methods usually use a single machine learning classifier that experiences uncertainty in making decisions for fuzzy samples in confusing areas. This limits the improvement of classification accuracy. To take full advantage of different classifiers and reduce uncertainty, we propose a classification method based on possibility theory and multi-classifier fusion. Firstly, the feature importance measure was performed by the XGBoost algorithm to construct a feature space, and two commonly used support vector machines (SVMs) were the chosen base classifiers. Then, classification results from the two base classifiers were quantitatively evaluated to define the confusing areas in classification. Finally, the confidence degree of each classifier for different categories was calculated by the confusion matrix and normalized to obtain the weights. Then, we synthesize different classifiers based on possibility theory to achieve more accurate classification in the confusion areas. DALES datasets were utilized to assess the proposed method. The results reveal that the proposed method can significantly improve classification accuracy in confusing areas.

This paper derives from a LARR-sponsored forum at the LASA 2003 Congress held in Dallas in March 2003. Targeted at younger scholars, a panel of leading researchers whose early work was shaped by marginality and dependency thinking of the 1960s were invited to reflect cross-generationally about how paradigms analyzing poverty in Latin American cities have shifted from that time to the present. Specifically, each of the authors compares “marginality” as it was construed more than three decades ago with contemporary constructions of poverty and social organization arising from their more recent research. While there are important continuities, the authors concur that the so-called “new poverty” today is very different, being more structural, more segmented and, perhaps paradoxically, more exclusionary than before. Moreover, the shift from a largely patrimonialist and undemocratic state towards one that, while more democratic, is also slimmer and downsized, thereby shifting state intervention and welfare systems ever more to local level governments and to the quasi-private sector of nongovernmental organizations. If earlier marginality theory overemphasized the separation of the poor from the mainstream, today's new poverty is often embedded within structures of social exclusion that severely reduce opportunities for social mobility among the urban poor.
