<p><em>This article expands upon the findings of the paper presented at the 8<sup>th</sup> International Conference of Latgalistics. The study is based more generally upon the author’s study that forms the basis of the Master’s thesis “The culturohistorical circumstances of the development of the Rudzāti subdialect”.</em></p><p><em>The Rudzāti<sub>437</sub> subdialect is spoken in contemporary Līvāni municipality in the parish of Rudzāti, and also in section Z of Rožupe parish. The neighboring subdialect ZR is Atašiene<sub>432, </sub>ZA – Stirniene<sub>433</sub>, A – Preiļi<sub>439</sub>, D – Vārkava<sub>438</sub>, bet R – Līvāni<sub>436</sub> (see Figure 1).</em></p><p><em>Since geographic, economic or political circumstances have differentiated groups of people (In Latvia, the largest factor is in the development of dialects has been the allocation of territory to different manor estates, Rudzīte 2005: 15), the aim of the research is to clarify which culturohistorical boundaries crossed the territory of the Rudzāti dialect until it became a single parish in 1925, which neighboring dialects influenced its development, and whether this is reflected in contemporary phonetic material, especially in the dialect’s vowel sounds.</em></p><p><em>Interviews conducted for the 2010–2012 ESF project “Their nest, their land – Latvian rural population development strategy and cultural change” were used in the research (ESF 2010–2012). Three Rudzāti speakers from the ZA subdialect area were also interviewed (Speaker interviews, 2015).</em></p><p><em>The most important factor in the analysis of the characteristics of the Rudzāti<sub>437</sub> dialect was the gathering of the most accurate sociolinguistic information possible about the speakers. It was especially important to discern the places of birth and current residence of the speakers, in order to detect peculiarities in the “endpoints” of the Rudzāti<sub>437­ </sub>dialect and isolate these. For this reason, it was also important to query the place of birth of speakers’ parents. Attention was also paid to each speaker’s religious confession and denomination. The Ošas river was used as a conditional boundary line during analysis of speaker material, because this was the boundary between the counties of Rēzekne and Daugavpils during the Russian Imperial period, and speakers of the dialect were grouped according to which side of the river their place of residence was located.</em></p><em>In the study, correlations to the vowels and diphthongs of standard Latvian were analyzed in the Rudzāti dialect in addition to vowel deletions, reductions and insertions in the final syllables. Special attention was paid to instances in which vowel and diphthong shifts indicated the possibility of intersections with isoglosses. Such differences were found in shifts of the standard Latvian vowels e, ā, ē, ū and the diphthong ei.</em>

With the help of C-contractions having a fixed point, we obtain a characterization of complete fuzzy metric spaces, in the sense of Kramosil and Michalek, that extends the classical theorem of H. Hu (see “Am. Math. Month. 1967, 74, 436–437”) that a metric space is complete if and only if any Banach contraction on any of its closed subsets has a fixed point. We apply our main result to deduce that a well-known fixed point theorem due to D. Mihet (see “Fixed Point Theory 2005, 6, 71–78”) also allows us to characterize the fuzzy metric completeness.

434 Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) targeting PD-1/PD-L1 have shown objective response rates (ORR) of 15-21% in PD-L1 unselected patients (pts) with platinum-refractory mUC. Overall results of RANGE, a randomized, double-blinded phase 3 trial comparing ramucirumab and docetaxel (R+D) to placebo and docetaxel (P+D) in pts with platinum-refractory mUC demonstrated an ORR of 24.5% to R+D and a statistically significant improvement in progression free survival (PFS; median 4.07 vs 2.76 mo; HR 0.757). Here we present a pre-specified subgroup analysis of pts who received a prior ICI. Methods: RANGE enrolled pts with progressive mUC during or after platinum-based chemotherapy. Additional prior treatment with one ICI was permitted. Pts were randomized (1:1) to receive D 75 mg/m2 up to 10 cycles with R 10 mg/kg or P on day 1 of a 21-day cycle until disease progression or other discontinuation criteria. Primary endpoint, investigator-assessed PFS, was analyzed in the first 437 randomized pts. Secondary endpoints included overall survival, objective response, and safety. Radiographic assessment occurred every 6 weeks. Results: Thirty three of the 437 pts (8%) in the PFS population received a prior ICI. The majority (91%) received the ICI immediately following platinum and immediately prior to RANGE. Most pts received atezolizumab (55%) or pembrolizumab (36%); ORR to prior ICI was 6% and the majority (67%) had progressive disease as best response. Median duration of the ICI was 3.5 mo (IQR 1.6-5.2). Disease sites at entry onto RANGE included lymph node (79%), lung (48%), liver (39%) and bone (18%). At data cutoff, responses were achieved by 5/14 (35.7%) on R+D, compared to 2/19 (10.5%) on P+D. Responses to R+D were independent of disease site. Of pts with liver metastases, 3/8 responded to R+D compared to 0/5 on P+D. Overall, median PFS was 5.29 mo on R+D and 2.76 mo on P+D (HR 0.920). The frequency of grade ≥3 adverse events was similar between arms. Conclusions: Acknowledging limitations of sample size, R+D showed higher ORR than P+D in pts who had progressed on platinum and ICI therapy, including those with liver metastases. Several cases from developing countries has been reported either on isolated vitamin C or isolated vitamin D deficiency in the recent past. Though nutritional vitamin C deficiency is rare but recently there is re-emergence of vitamin D deficiency found in developed countries. Combined deficiency of vitamin C and D found in the same patient is very rare both in developed and developing countries. Our patient was admitted in Ad Din Women’s Medical College Hospital, Dhaka with bronchiolitis. She had a history of cough and cold for 5 days. She had fever and respiratory difficulty for the last 2 days. On physical examination, she had low grade fever, fast breathing, chest in drawing. She had also widening of the wrist and ankle joints but her parents were unaware of these changes. They thought these could be a normal phenomenon. We suspect Rickets on physical examination findings. The baby was very much irritable and we thought that it was due to cough, cold and difficult breathing (bronchiolitis). Combined vitamin C and D deficiency was an incidental finding in this case. Her X ray of wrist joints, lower limb including knee and ankle joints showed the features of combined deficiency of vitamin C and D. Leaves and twigs from four species of tree fodders, Aetocarpus lakoocha (AL), bauhinia purpurea (BP), Garuga pinnata (GP) and Ficus sroxburghii (FR), cultivated widely for feeding ruminants in the hills of Nepal and maintained at the Agriculture Research Station (Goat), Bandipur were investigated for there chemical composition, and nutrient intake, digestibility, and growth rate in growing female goats. Differences occurred between species of tree fodders on nutrient composition, which contained 286, 342, 312, and 263 g/kg DM; 174, 98, 116 and 178 g/kg total ash; 137, 163, 140, and 119 g/kg CP; 440, 458, 437, and 451 g/kg NDF; 383, 407, 382, and 406 g/kg ADF; 177, 135, 181, and 143 g/kg ADL; 19.5, 21.6, 20.9, and 29.3 g/kg Ca; and 2.2, 2.8, 2.4, and 2.5 g/kg P on DM basis for AL, BP, GP, and FR, respectively. The DM intake was higher for goats fed AL (432 g/d) and GP (428 g/d) than BP (342 g/d) or FR (306 g/d). Nutrient digestibility was higher for goats fed AL and GP, except Ca, which was higher for goats fed FR. Similarly, highest daily weight gain was observed for goats fed AL (71 g/d) and GP (64 g/d) than either of BP (54 g/d) or FR (30 g/d). Overall, leaves and twigs from these tree fodders supported moderate growth, but may not be advisable for maximum production.Nepal Agric. Res. J. High-risk subtypes of human papillomavirus (HPV) are the main causative agents of cervical cancer, for which Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) may sometimes be a co-factor. Vaccines have been developed against some subtypes of human papillomavirus and a vaccine against CT is in development. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of the subtypes of HPV and CT in genitourinary (GU) medicine clinic attenders. In total, 1000 consecutive patients attending the GU clinic participated in this anonymized point-prevalence study. Urethral swabs from 437 men and urethral plus cervical swabs as a single specimen from 563 women were tested for the subtypes of both organisms. Nested major outer membrane protein (MOMP) polymerase chain reaction detected CT chromosomal DNA in 44/437 (10%) of the men and 73/563 (13%) of the women. Genotypes E, F, and D were the most common. In all, 55/437 (13%) of men and 244/563 (43%) of women were infected with at least one high-risk HPV type. In conclusion, the new HPV vaccines, Gardasil and Cervarix, would have protected against 58% and 45%, respectively, of the high-risk subtypes found in women in this population. The rate of high-risk HPV infection (43%) found in women in this study raises concern.

e20017 Background: P has widely been used for the risk assessment of lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We previously reported that mutations in KRAS, TP53, and EGFR were also associated with P from a prospective multicenter molecular epidemiology study (JME study; Kawaguchi T, J Clin Oncol 2016). Recently, D alone has been reported to provide stronger risk estimates of COPD than P. Here, we show the comparison of these two indices in predicting the risk of smoking-related oncogenic mutations in NSCLC, utilizing the database from the JME study including detailed smoking information and the mutational profile by next generation sequencing. Methods: In 439 ever- and 437 never-smokers, the frequency of mutations in KRAS, TP53 and EGFR were 9.4, 26.8 and 42.5%, respectively, and smoking-related cytosine to adenine base substitution (C > A) was observed in 12.7 % of cases. AUC values (area under the ROC curves) for logistic regression determined from P and D to predict the mutations or C > A change were compared, considering gender, age, stage and histology as covariates. Results: The median of P and D were 43 (1-189) and 41 (years, 1-65) in smokers, respectively. The AUC values in EGFR and KRAS were numerically higher than others, suggesting stronger association with smoking. There was no significant difference in AUC values between P and D in TP53, EGFR and C > A, and P was a significantly better estimate of KRAS mutations (table). Conclusions: P remains the standard method to evaluate the risk of oncogenic mutations in NSCLC. D, however, warrants further investigation as a simpler alternative to P.[Table: see text]

No início dos anos 1950, a cidade de Campina Grande - PB foi palco de uma experiência modernizadora, fruto dos desdobramentos de um elaborado projeto político e civilizador, que entre outras questões, visava assegurar a ampliação do sistema de abastecimento de água para a cidade, uma vez que a população enfrentava grave dificuldade para a obtenção deste líquido, muitas vezes recorrendo à água salobra, imprópria para o consumo, oriunda de precários espaços de armazenamento ou mesmo dos concorridos reservatórios públicos ou privados. Buscando combater uma atmosfera de temor e insegurança e afugentar de vez o fantasma da sede e das epidemias que rodeavam a cidade, os governadores eleitos nos anos 1950, a exemplo de José Américo de Almeida, Flávio Ribeiro Coutinho e Pedro Moreno Gondim realizaram, entre os anos de 1951 a 1957, em parceria com as ações administrativas do Governo Federal, um projeto extremamente ambicioso: a construção do “Açude de Boqueirão de Cabaceiras”, seguido de um sistema adutor em 1958, os quais visavam, entre outras questões, suprimir a insuficiência do abastecimento proveniente de outro manancial, o “Açude de Vaca Brava” que se encontrava a beira de um colapso. Este projeto foi realizado pelo D.N.O.C.S., em parceria com o renomado escritório de engenharia sanitarista de Saturnino de Brito Filho. Sendo assim, este trabalho busca analisar as representações elaboradas em torno da crise do abastecimento d‟água em Campina Grande, bem como os enunciados e as estratégias governamentais para a sua resolução, levadas a efeito a partir da construção do “Açude de Boqueirão de Cabaceiras” ou “Açude Epitácio Pessoa”. Nesse intuito, buscaremos problematizar um conjunto de tramas políticas, materiais e simbólicas que caracterizaram as experiências sociais elaboradas em torno da aquisição deste equipamento moderno, entre os anos de 1950-58, a partir da análise de representações jornalísticas, documentos técnicos e registros fotográficos, como forma de perceber os usos e consumos da água desejados para a cidade.
In the early 1950s, the city of Campina Grande - PB was the scene of a modernizing experience, fruit of the unfolding of an elaborate political project. and civilizing, which among other things, aimed at ensuring the expansion of the water supply to the city, since the population was facing severe difficulty to obtain this liquid, often resorting to brackish water, unfit for consumption, resulting from poor storage spaces or even from public or private reservoirs. Seeking to combat a atmosphere of fear and insecurity and drive away the ghost of thirst and epidemics surrounding the city, governors-elect in the 1950s, for example by José Américo de Almeida, Flávio Ribeiro Coutinho and Pedro Moreno Gondim between 1951 and 1957, in partnership with of the Federal Government, an extremely ambitious project: the construction of the Boqueirão de Cabaceiras ", followed by an adductor system in 1958, which aimed, among other things, to eliminate the shortage of supplies from another Member State. the "Açude de Vaca Brava", which was on the verge of collapse. This one project was carried out by D.N.O.C.S., in partnership with the renowned sanitary engineer of Saturnino de Brito Filho. Therefore, this work seeks to analyze the representations elaborated around the crisis of the water supply in Campina Grande, as well as the governmental statements and strategies for the resolution, carried out as of the construction of the "Açude de Boqueirão de Cabaceiras "or" Açude Epitácio Pessoa ". In this sense, we will try to set of political, material and symbolic the purchase of this modern equipment, 1950-58, based on the analysis of journalistic representations, technical documents and photographic records, as a means of perceiving the desired water uses and consumptions to town.

La dispute de laquelle découle cette théorie thomasienne a son origine dans des diverses interprétations de la Physique et de la Métaphysique d Aristote introduites par des neufs traductions de ces textes qui ont été produites à partir du XIIème siècle chez l Europe. On se demandait alors sur la possibilité de la connaissance intellectuelle du sensible au même temps qu on poursuivait le problème de savoir s il est possible de soutenir l existence d une relation entre des choses qu existent de façons diverses, à savoir, l intellect de l homme, lequel est quelque chose d immatériel et prédisposé à la universalité, et les sensibles, lesquels sont appréhendés par les sens comme choses matérielles et singulières. Dans sa réponse, Thomas d Aquin offre la thèse selon laquelle c est possible pour l intellect de l homme, lequel, si bien que sans matière, est aussi uni avec un corps matériel et singulier, connaitre les natures (immatérielles et universelles) des choses sensibles (matérielles et singulières). Selon Thomas, la connaissance humaine a son début avec la réception des formes des choses matérielles, laquelle se déroule suivant deux étapes diverses selon lesquelles nous avons, en premier lieu, la appréhension du « sensible » et, puis, la appréhension du « intelligible ». C est la majeure ou la mineure proximité de la matière qui serait la plus important mesure de cette distinction : la connaissance sensible c est l appréhension des choses matérielles par moyen de la modification des organes du corps et travers laquelle la forme est appréhendée mélangée avec la matière. La connaissance intellectuelle, cependant, ne s utilise pas de aucun organe corporel et, par conséquence, est absolument immatérielle. Dans cette thèse on présuppose la nécessité de l existence d une relation entre la connaissance sensible et la connaissance intellectuelle pour que la connaissance intellectuelle de la chose matérielle soit devenue possible. C est ainsi que, selon Thomas, les sens produisent dans le sujet qui connait une similitude sensible qui représente la chose matérielle avant que la forme intellectuelle de la chose soit elle-même produite. Cette similitude sensible serait le point de début de la production intellectuelle d une seconde similitude, intellectuelle, décrite par Thomas comme ce par quoi la nature de la chose matérielle est connue. La première similitude, sensible, a été appelée « phantasme », l autre, intellectuelle, l « espèce intelligible », et le producteur de celle-ci, l « intellect agent ». Dans ce travail on propose déchiffrer la fonction de chacun de ces éléments qui composent cette théorie de Thomas aussi comme les relations que cette argumentation soutienne maintenir avec la philosophie d Augustin. Dans ce procès, on verra d une façon surprenante l évêque d Hippone être présenté par Thomas comme un partisan d Aristote contraire à des thèses attribuées, dans une formulation très générale, bien à Platon (auquel Avicenne est ajouté), bien aux philosophes présocratiques.
O objetivo deste trabalho é trazer à tona a presença de Agostinho na formulação da tese de Tomás de Aquino sobre o conhecimento intelectual humano apresentada na primeira parte de sua Suma de Teologia. O debate no qual a tese tomasiana se insere é suscitado por diferentes interpretações da física e metafisica de Aristóteles, em contraste com a tradição patrística, possibilitadas por traduções para o latim realizadas na Europa a partir do século XIII. A pergunta que se coloca é sobre a possibilidade de conhecimento intelectual daquilo que é sensível. O problema é a relação entre coisas cujo modo de existência é diverso: o intelecto humano é imaterial e se remete a algo universal, enquanto as coisas sensíveis são materiais e singulares. Tomás responde essa questão favoravelmente, apresentando a tese de que é possível ao intelecto humano imaterial, porém, unido a um corpo singular, conhecer as naturezas (imateriais e universais) das coisas sensíveis (materiais e singulares). De acordo com o autor, o conhecimento é oriundo de um processo de recepção de formas. No caso do homem, esse processo ocorre de dois modos diversos: sensível e inteligível. Esses modos de cognição se diferenciam conforme sua relação com a matéria: a cognição sensível é um modo de recepção das formas oriundas das coisas materiais que ocorre através de modificação de órgãos corporais, sendo portanto uma recepção material. A cognição inteligível é um modo de recepção que não utiliza órgão corpóreo algum, sendo portanto imaterial. A tese tomasiana afirma uma necessária relação interna entre a cognição sensível e a inteligível, que garante a possibilidade de ocorrência de conhecimento intelectual humano dos sensíveis. De acordo com Tomás os sentidos produzem no cognoscente uma semelhança sensível interna, representativa da coisa material, após a apreensão da forma da coisa. No caso do homem essa semelhança sensível serve ao intelecto para a produção de outra semelhança, em si mesmo. Essa outra semelhança, porém, é inteligível e afirmada como aquilo pelo que a natureza da coisa material é conhecida. A semelhança sensível é chamada phantasma , a semelhança inteligível é a espécie inteligível e o produtor da espécie inteligível é chamado intelecto agente . O itinerário a seguir apresentará o papel que cada um desses elementos ocupa na tese de Tomás, com o propósito de evidenciar como sua argumentação se fundamenta em interpretações sobre Agostinho. O bispo de Hipona é lido em concordância com Aristóteles e contra reconstruções de teses imputadas genericamente a Platão, de um lado (além de Avicena, associado por Tomás ao platonismo), e aos pré-socráticos, de outro.

AbstractOriginally, the concept of resilience refers to one’s capacity to cope with unexpected shocks and unpredictable situations. Originating from ecological theories, the approach has gained ground in social sciences. In the context of education, the concept has been applied to explain how disadvantaged students can overcome structural constraints and become educationally successful and socially mobile (Werner, E. E., Vulnerable but invincible: a longitudinal study of resilient children and youth. McGraw-Hill, New York, 1982; Masten A. S., American Psychologist 56: 227–238, 2001; Reid, R., Botterrill L. C., Australian Journal of Public Administration 72:31–40, 2013; Máté, D., Erdélyi Társadalom 13:43–55, 2015).This paper is based on the analysis of the Hungarian National Assessment of Basic Competences (NABC) database which has been conducted annually since 2001. We created a typology of school resilience based on the schools’ social and ethnic profile as well as their performance indicators. We defined those schools resilient which over perform others with similar social intake, and we also identified irresilient schools which underperform others with similar social intake. The school types were created by correlating the socio-economic status index (SES) and school performance.Since the NABC database provides us with data on the estimated rate of Roma students in each school, it is possible to take into account the schools’ ethnic intake in the analysis of resilience. We conducted statistical analyses to compare the performance of resilient and irresilient schools in the light of the ratio of Roma students. Finally, we seek answers to the question whether ethnic segregation correlates with school achievement in Hungary. We could identify some crucial institutional factors contributing to resilience (or school success) in the case of schools with relatively high proportion of Roma students.

We have developed a sandwich-type enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for the quantitation of fibrin degradation products (FbDP) in plasma with a time-to-result of only 45 minutes. The assay is based on the combination of the specificities of two monoclonal antibodies (FDP-14 and DD-13), developed in our institute. FDP-14, the catching antibody, binds both fibrinogen degradation products (FbgDP) and FbDP. It has its epitope in the E-domain of the fibrinogen molecule on the BB-chain between amino acids 54-118 (Blood 68, 437, 1986). Antibody DD-13 was raised using D-dimer as antigen and was used as a tagging antibody, conjugated with horse-radish peroxidase.A strong positive reaction is obtained with a whole blood clot lysate (lysis induced by tissue-type plasminogen activator) which is used as a standard.The EIA does not detect FbgDP i.e. purified fragments X, Y, D:E complexes or FbgDP in plasma treated in vitro with streptokinase. This indicates that the assay is specific for fibrin degradation products.We have successfully applied this assay to the plasma of patients with a variety of diseases. In combination with the assays previously developed by us for FbgDP (Thromb. Haemostas. 1987, in press) and for the total amount (TDP) of FbgDP + FbDP in plasma (J. Lab. Clin. Med. 1987, in press), we are now able to study the composition of TDP in terms of FbgDP and FbDP in patients.

We have recently shown that pseudorandom sequences of solitons can be generated and transmitted at 5 GHz by direct modulation of laser diodes (LD) when biasing slightly below threshold (C.R. Mirasso and L. Pesquera, IEEE PTL 7. p. 437, 1995). Using this bias current pattern effects are avoided and the fluctuations originated in the LD are reduced. Here we perform numerical simulations to study the transmission of pseudorandom sequences of solitons at 15 GHz and 20 GHz obtained by time division multiplexing (TDM) of 1.55 µm LD modulated at 5GHz and biased slightly below threshold. A narrowband optical filter is used to limit the large bandwidth of the signal produced by the chirping. To reduce soliton interaction the pulses are compressed by using 0.6 km of a normal dispersion fiber (D = −20 ps/nm km). In this way the pulses launched in the fiber have a 10 ps witdh. A large timing jitter is obtained after transmission over transoceanic distances due to the pulse-to-pulse frequency jitter originated in the LD. This jitter is reduced by using guiding filters every 25 km with a bandwidth of 250 GHz. The results in the figure for 15 GHz (left) show that filters are effective to reduce timing jitter. However, in the 20 GHz (right) transmission sequence the interaction leads to errors (see the set ”11” near the end of the sequence). Then more effective soliton control systems (i.e. sliding-frequency filtering) should be used to reduce interaction effects.

Abstract Objectives/Scope Steam injection in diatomite reservoirs results in permeability changes owing to fracture propagation, and compaction as a result of thermal effects and pressure changes during injection and production. The purpose of this work is to evaluate these coupled thermal, hydrological, and mechanical (THM) processes over several years of cyclic steam injection and production. A single well model in a diatomite reservoir was created to evaluate these processes at a higher resolution near wellbore than used in a 3-D reservoir-scale model. Methods, Procedures, Process Simulations include tensile failure, shear failure with simultaneous shear on multiple planes, coupling of porosity and permeability changes with multiphase flow, and diatomite compaction with temperature and effective stress. Initial isotropic horizontal stresses are 1.0375 of vertical (azimuthal average, part of San Joaquin Valley). Injection interval (437-528 m) pressure is fixed, 6.3 MPa, 930 psi (injection), and ~4 MPa (production), with a soak period between injection and production. Three degree dilation on shearing is assumed. To the extent that fracture opening is tensile, fractures close on fluid pressure drop, but shear components remain. Permeability changes due to mechanical failure are simulated using a cubic law. Results, Observations, Conclusions During injection over multiple cycles, the diatomite surrounding the well is heated to over 250 °C and pressurized by the injected steam. During soak (shut-in) and subsequent production, pressure drops, dropping the boiling point, inducing further vaporization. Geomechanical changes show tensile opening accompanied by a greater amount of shearing. Total shearing increases with each injection cycle, resulting in a greater porosity increase from shearing than tensile opening. Fracture propagation was limited to the diatomite reservoir and did not penetrate the caprock. Novel/Additive Information Inclusion of an empirical effective stress/temperature diatomite compaction law together with porosity and permeability changes due to mechanical failure more closely models the mechanics of cyclic steaming of diatomite.

The Europe 2020 strategy identifies drop out from i-VET or early school leaving (ESL) as a key challenge to meeting employment targets. The Code RED project (http://www.codered-project.eu) has been developed in response to the high levels of early school leaving, drop-out and exclusion from education that often lead to unemployment, poverty and social deprivation. In taking actions towards achieving its goals, the project has been experimenting with a (serious) games' co-design methodology [1] through a dedicated co-design workshops' series, run within 2014 in the UK, Greece, Italy and Cyprus. The objective of the workshops was to engage young people in an interactive (participatory) process of designing and implementing digital educational games' prototypes, aiming at paving the way towards adopting these paradigms in the education and skills' acquisition process, thus maximising the benefit of participants. During the four organised workshops, around 30 young students and 10 trainers (including researchers and facilitators) walked through the pre-defined co-design process, trying to maintain the facilitation at the level 6 of the Hart's ladder [2]. Participants had the opportunity to work as a team, exchange experiences, share roles and responsibilities in the team, see examples of digital (educational) games/products developed by others so as to establish expectations, learn how to deconstruct the rules of games, create and discuss their own game ideas using low-tech prototyping tools (e.g. LEGO models, pack of playing cards, paper, digital means of taking notes, etc.), and finally implement prototypes of their game ideas, using game authoring software such as "Stencyl" (http://www.stencyl.com) and ARIS (https://arisgames.org/). The experimenting offered the opportunity to researchers to collect some very interesting observations, analyse them across the four involved countries and extract useful knowledge towards expanding already available education and employability curriculums from previous projects (e.g. the GOET project, http://goet-project.eu/). There is currently a renewal of world-wide interest in hypersonic flight. Vehicle concepts being considered range from cruise missiles to SSTO and TSTO vehicles. The new characteristics of these vehicles are that they will be powered by air-breathing engines and have long residence times in the air-breathing corridor. In the Mach 4-7 regime, waverider aircraft are being considered as candidates for both long-range and short-range cruise missions, as hypersonic missiles, and as high L/D highly maneuverable vehicles. This paper will discuss the potential for near-term and far-term application of air-breathing engines to the above waverider vehicle concepts and missions. In particular, the cruise mission is discussed in detail and attempts are made to compare and contrast it with the accelerator mission. Past criticisms levied against waveriders alleged low volumetric efficiency, lack of engine/airframe integration studies, poor off-design performance, poor take-off and landing capability, have been shown by on-going research to be unfounded. A discussion is presented of some of the technical challenges and on-going research aimed at realizing such vehicles: from turboramjet and scramjet technology development, propulsion-airframe integration effects on vehicle performance, aeroservothermoelastic systems analysis, hypersonic stability and control with aeroservothermoelastic and propulsion effects, etc. A unique and very strong aspect of hypersonic vehicle design is the integration and interaction of the propulsion system, aerodynamics, aerodynamic heating, stability and control, and materials and structures. This first-order multidisciplinary situation demands the ability to integrate highly-coupled and interacting elements in a fundamental and optimal fashion to achieve the desired performance. Some crucial technology needs are found in propulsion-airframe integration and its role in configuration definition, hypersonic boundary-layer transition and its impact on vehicle gross-weight and mission success, scramjet combustor mixing length and its impact on engine weight and, CFD (turbulence modeling, transition modeling, etc) as a principal tool for the design of hypersonic vehicles. Key technology implications in thermal management, structures, materials, and flight control systems will also be briefly discussed. It is concluded that most of the technology requirements in the Mach 4-7 regime are relatively conventional making cited applications near-term, yet offering very significant advancements in aircraft technology.
