Abstract STI571/Gleevec/imatinib, a rationally-designed agent that occupies the ATP-binding site of BCR-ABL and stabilizes the protein in its closed, inactive conformation, has been a remarkable success for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). However, a significant proportion of patients chronically treated with STI571 develop resistance because of the acquisition of mutations in the kinase domain of BCR-ABL. Furthermore, the effects of STI571 on CML patients in accelerated phase or blastic crisis are unsatisfactory since many patients relapse after transient remission. Hence, additional drugs or STI571-based combination regimens are desired to circumvent resistance and to improve response rates. Here we reported that PS-341, a proteasome inhibitor which offers great promise to patients with multiple myeloma (MM), significantly enhanced the antileukemia activity of STI571 in vitro and in vivo. We found a synergy exists between low concentrations of PS-341 (5–10 nM) and STI571 (0.1–0.2 μM) in inhibition of cell growth and induction of apoptosis in K562 cell line and CD34+ leukemic cells isolated from CML patients. In K562 cells, combined use of PS-341 and STI571 accelerated activation of caspase-3, 9, and facilitated cleavage of poly-(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) as compared to those in cells treated with PS-341 or STI571 alone. Moreover, PS-341/STI571 combination resulted in potentiated degradation of BCR-ABL and downregulation of phosphorylated BCR-ABL as compared to those in mono treatment. In nude mice inoculated subcutaneously with K562 cells, treatment with PS-341 (injected intraperitoneally, ip) alone (at doses of 0.05, 0.5, 1 mg/kg/d, twice a week for 4 weeks, respectively) decreased tumor growth in a dose-dependent manner. STI571 (ip) at 10 mg/kg/d also inhibited tumor growth. Intriguingly, combinatory administration of low dose PS-341 (0.05 mg/kg/d, twice a week for 4 weeks) and STI571 (10 mg/kg/d) yielded a much more profound inhibition of tumor growth and even clearance of leukemic cells in mice compared to either monotherapy. Taken together, these results demonstrate synergic effects of PS-341 and STI571, and provide the rationale to evaluate PS-341/STI571 combination in treating CML aiming to further improve clinical outcome of patients.

A field experiment entitled “Effect of nitrogen levels on the growth and yield of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) Varieties” was carried out during the Rabi season of 2021-22 near the polyhouse research farm of wheat, barley, and mustard section, ITM University, Gwalior. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design with three replications. Twelve treatments consist of four levels of nitrogen (0, 40, 80, and 120 kg N ha-1) and three barley varieties (RD-2035, KBS-D-341, and BH-393). Results indicated that the application of different nitrogen levels and varieties had significant effects on plant growth parameters such as plant height, number of tillers, leaf area, and dry matter accumulation. Increased levels of nitrogen considerably influenced the yield characters and were maximum when 120 kg N ha-1 was applied; however, it was at par with 80 kg N ha-1. The highest grain yield (4312.23 kg ha-1) was recorded with the application of 120 kg N ha-1 which was significantly higher as compared to lower levels (0 and 40 kg N ha-1) of nitrogen except for 80 kg N ha-1.The application of 40, 80, and 120 kg N ha-1 increased the grain yield by 57.13, 73.48, and 74.29 per cent, respectively over 0 kg N ha-1. Among varieties, KBS-D-341 produced maximum plant height, number of tillers, leaf area, and dry matter accumulation compared to other varieties. It also recorded a maximum grain yield, no. of effective tillers, no of grains per spike, and 1000 grain weight. This was followed by the variety BH-393 and RD-2035 performed poorly. In terms of economics KBS-D-341 obtained maximum net returns of (Rs. 88887.05 ha-1) with a BC ratio of (2.11) at 80kg N ha-1 as compared to other varieties.

Biodiesel refers to one alternative fuel replacing diesel fuel obtained from renewable materials such as vegetable oil / animal fats (cooking oil). Used cooking oil is cooking oil which has been repeatedly used. Repeated use of cooking oil is by cause harm to the consumers. One of the utilizations of used cooking oil is by converting it into biodiesel. This study aims ti find out the process of converting used cooking oil into biodiesel and to investigate the quality of biodiesel produced from converted used cooking oil based on the parameters of Spesific gravity 60/60˚ F ASTM D-1298, distillation ASTM D-86, kinematic viscosity ASTM D-445, flash point ASTM D-93, pour point ASTM D-97, and cetane index ASTM D-4737. The process of making biodiesel from used cooking oil was conducted by two processes, namely esterification dan transesterification. On the process of esterification, ratio of used cooking oil and methanol was 1:2 and H2SO4 as the catalyst. On the process transesterification, on the other hand, the ratio of oil resulted from ester and methanol was 1:2 with NaOH as catalyst. Based on the analysis resul, Spesific gravity 60/60˚ F test showed 0.8562, 0.8569, 0.8569 (on specs), distillation on temperature 90% werw 340, 351 and 341 (on specs), kinematic viscosity resul showed 1,98 (off specs), flash point PM was 130˚ C, and 132˚ C (on specs), pour point result were 15˚ C, 17˚ C and 17˚ C (on specs), and cetane index result showed 51, 52, 51,5 (on specs).

2033 Background: In vitro exposure to camptothecin results in down-regulation of the target enzyme, topoisomerase I (topo) via multi-ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation of the protein-linked DNA breaks. To prevent loss of topo, and thus circumvent a possible mechanism of resistance to the topo inhibitors, we conducted a dose escalating phase I study of topotecan in combination with the proteosome inhibitor PS 341. We now report the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic analysis of the trial. Methods: Patients with advanced cancer were treated with topotecan alone at the following dose escalating levels: 0.75, 1.0,1,25 and 1.5 mg/m2 as a 60 min infusion d x 5 during cycle 1. In subsequent cycles (21 days), cohorts of 3–6 patients received PS 341 as a 30 min infusion on days 1, 4, 8 and 11 at the following dose levels: 0.6, 0.8, 1.0 and 1.3 mg/m2. Topo expression was determined by western blot on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) sampled throughout the first 5-day treatment period of cycles #1 and 2. Total topotecan plasma pharmacokinetics were studied with the first doses of topotecan on cycle #1 (topotecan alone) and cycle #2 (topotecan after PS 341). Results: Samples were collected from 22 patients and 38 patient-cycles. In the first week of cycle #1, 9 of 22 (41 %) patients demonstrated a significant decrease in topo expression (range 0.2 - 1 fold) compared with the baseline level. Topo levels did not change (7/22, 32%) or increased (6/22, 27%) in the remaining patients. After administration of PS 341 during cycle #2, PBMC from 10 of 17 patients (59 %) analyzed showed a greater than 0.3 fold increase (range: 0.32 to 63) in topo concentration, and topo levels in 4 patients (23 %) were unchanged. Preliminary pharmacokinetic analysis indicates that PS 341 may interact with topotecan. Conclusions: There is a heterogeneous response in PBMC topo levels following administration of topotecan. However, addition of PS 341 to topotecan stabilized or increased PBMC topo I levels in the majority of patients, suggesting a possible role for PS341 in inhibiting camptothecin-induced topo protein degradation. Further studies combining proteasome inhibitors with topotecan to overcome drug resistance based on topo degradation are warranted. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

AbstractIn India, there is a lack of information about the adequate daily dose of vitamin D3supplementation in school children. Hence, we undertook this study to evaluate the adequacy and efficacy of different doses of vitamin D3in schoolchildren. A total of 1008 vitamin D-deficient (VDD) children, aged 6–16 years with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels <50nmol/l, were cluster randomised into three groups (A-344, B-341 and C-232) for supplementation (600, 1000 and 2000 IU daily) of vitamin D3under supervision for 6 months. Of the 1008 subjects who completed the study, 938 (93 %) were compliant. Baseline and post-supplementation fasting blood and urine samples were evaluated for Ca, phosphates, alkaline phosphatase, 25(OH)D and parathormone and urine Ca:creatinine ratio. The mean age of the subjects was 11·7 (sd2·4) years, and the overall mean baseline serum 25(OH)D level was 24·3 (SD9·5)nmol/l. Post-supplementation rise in serum 25(OH)D in compliant group was maximum with 2000 IU (70·0 (SD30·0)nmol/l), followed by 1000 IU (46·8 (SD22·5)nmol/l) and 600 IU (36·5 (SD18·5)nmol/l), and serum 25(OH)D levels of ≥50nmol/l were achieved in 71·5, 81·8 and 92·9 % by groups A, B and C, respectively. Secondary hyperparathyroidism decreased from 31·7 to 8·4 % post-supplementation. Two participants developed hypercalciuria, but none developed hypercalcaemia. Children with VDD benefit maximum with the daily supplementation of 2000 IU of vitamin D3. Whether recommendations of 400 IU/d by Indian Council of Medical Research or 600 IU by Indian Academy of Pediatrics or Institute of Medicine would suffice to achieve vitamin D sufficiency in children with VDD remains debatable.

Abstract In 2018, Bai, Fujita and Zhang [Discrete Math. 341 (2018), no. 6, 1523–1533] introduced the concept of a kernel by rainbow paths (for short, RP-kernel) of an arc-coloured digraph D D , which is a subset S S of vertices of D D such that ( a a ) there exists no rainbow path for any pair of distinct vertices of S S , and ( b b ) every vertex outside S S can reach S S by a rainbow path in D D . They showed that it is NP-hard to recognize whether an arc-coloured digraph has an RP-kernel and it is NP-complete to decide whether an arc-coloured tournament has an RP-kernel. In this paper, we give the sufficient conditions for the existence of an RP-kernel in arc-coloured unicyclic digraphs, semicomplete digraphs, quasi-transitive digraphs and bipartite tournaments, and prove that these arc-coloured digraphs have RP-kernels if certain “short” cycles and certain “small” induced subdigraphs are rainbow.

The unlimited use of pesticides, besides contribute with to increase environmental pollution, is also influencing negatively the health of the living beings, including the people health. Many studies show the result these chemicals in the reproductive system of animals and even same at man, can cause infertility problem, which can originate, among other factors, the low sperm quality and quantity. This is study aimed at evaluating human sperm quality parameters and the chemical evaluation of the core of the sperm trough Raman Scaterring Spectroscopy, after in vitro exposure to different concentrations of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and atrazine. The choice of the use of the these herbicides was because they are widely use throughout the world, especially in Brazil, highlighted the west Paulista region, used at cane sugar plantation, significant culture of the region. In this context, sperm samples were selected according to the normal testing parameters that evaluate sperm quality, such as liquefaction, viscosity, appearance, volume, pH, sperm, vitality, morphology and motility. Semen samples of 10 healthy donor were exposed to study herbicides varying the concentration and time. After the different exposures (0.05, 0.5, 1.0, 5.0 and 125 μg/mL, 30 and 60 min), the analysis of motility and vitality were again evaluated. The Raman Scaterring spectra were obtained from samples control sperm and after exposure to the herbicide 2,4-D e atrazine at concentration of 125 μg/mL and 60 min incubation. The progressive motility and total motility decreased from the concentration 0,5 μg/mL at times 30 and 60 minutes while the percentage of sperm properties increased. The progressive motility and total motility decreased from the concentration 0.5 mg / mL at times 30 and 60 minutes while the percentage of sperm immotile increased. The vitality (viable sperm) decreased significantly (p <0.05) from the exposure concentration 0.5 μg/mL to 2,4-D and from 1.0 μg/mL atrazine, at times 30 and 60 minutes, showing that there is a functional change of trend of human sperm after exposure to these herbicides, and this change is intensified with the exposure time factor and concentration of herbicides. Through the Raman Scaterring technique allowed us to characterize normal human sperm and exposed to herbicides and verify the change in the molecular structure in the exposed sperm, evidenced by changes in relative intensities of the bands 785, 1095, 1255, 1336, 1374, 1486 and 1575 cm-1 treated with 2,4-D and a decrease at 1095 after exposure to atrazine. These results indicate the modification of nitrogenous bases and the phosphate group that make up DNA present in the nucleus of the sperm.
A utilização desenfreada de praguicidas, além de contribuir com o agravamento da poluição ambiental, também está influenciando de forma negativa a saúde dos seres vivos, inclusive a saúde das pessoas. Muitos estudos mostram a interferência desses produtos químicos no sistema reprodutor de animais e até mesmo do homem, podendo acarretar problemas de infertilidade, que podem ser originados, dentre vários fatores, pela baixa quantidade e qualidade espermática. Este estudo visa á avaliação de parâmetros de qualidade espermática humana e a avaliação química do núcleo do espermatozoide, por meio de Espectroscopia de Espalhamento Raman, após a exposição in vitro a diferentes concentrações de ácido 2,4-diclorofenoxiacético (2,4-D) e atrazina. Estes herbicidas são amplamente utilizados em todo o mundo, principalmente no Brasil, em destaque a região do Oeste Paulista, por serem empregados na cana-de-açúcar, cultura significativa da região. Neste contexto, foram selecionadas amostras de espermatozoides de acordo com os parâmetros normais de testes que avaliam a qualidade espermática, como: liquefação, viscosidade, aparência, volume, pH, concentração de espermatozoides, vitalidade, morfologia e motilidade. Amostras de sêmen de 10 doadores saudáveis foram expostas aos herbicidas de estudo, variando o tempo e a concentração. Após as diferentes exposições (0,05; 0,5; 1,0; 5,0 e 125 μg/mL, 30 e 60 min), as análises de motilidade e vitalidade foram novamente avaliadas. Os espectros de Espalhamento Raman foram obtidos das amostras de espermatozoide controle e após a exposição aos herbicidas 2,4-D e atrazina na concentração de 125 µg/mL em 60 min de incubação. A motilidade progressiva e motilidade total diminuíram a partir da concentração 0,5 μg/mL nos tempos 30 e 60 min enquanto que a porcentagem de espermatozoides imóveis aumentou. A vitalidade (espermatozoides viáveis) diminuiu significativamente (p<0,05) a partir da exposição da concentração 0,5 μg/mL para o 2,4-D e a partir de 1,0 μg/mL para a atrazina, nos tempos 30 e 60min, mostrando-se que há uma tendência de alteração funcional do espermatozoide humano após a exposição a estes herbicidas, e esta alteração é intensificada com o fator de tempo de exposição e concentração dos herbicidas testados. Por meio da técnica de Espalhamento Raman foi possível caracterizar o espermatozoide humano normal e os expostos aos herbicidas e verificar a alteração na estrutura molecular nos espermatozoides expostos, evidenciadas pelas alterações nas intensidades relativas das bandas 785, 1095, 1255, 1336, 1374, 1486 e 1575 cm-1 do tratado com 2,4-D, e uma diminuição na banda de 1095 após a exposição à atrazina. Estes resultados indicam a alteração das bases nitrogenadas e do grupo fosfato que compõem o DNA presente no núcleo do espermatozoide.

Abstract (sommario):
This study deals with an important concept in fiqh known as ḍamān. Despite its universal usage in various areas of law, including that of criminal law and law of torts especially in facilitating award of compensation, this study will confine its survey within the bounds of commercial transactions. Ḍamān forms one of the most complicated subject-matters in the Islamic Law of Obligation. In this context, ḍamān is generally perceived as civil liability in the widest meaning, arising from the non-performance of contractual obligation, violation of trust, misrepresentation and unlawful enrichment. Firstly, this study will discuss suretyship, as ḍamān is, to some extent, treated as synonymous with kafālah by the jurists. Secondly, ḍamān will be surveyed as a method of redress of any contractual irregularities under the notion of gharāmah. Such practices are motivated by the Sharī'ah doctrines of maqāṣid shar'iyyah (objectives of the law), upholding the concept of lā ḍarara wa lā ḍirār (no harm shall be inflicted or reciprocated) and respecting the notion of sanctity of legitimate ownership (ḥurmat al-milkiyyah) and freedom of contract (ḥurriyat al-ta'āqud). Methods of establishing liability (ṭuruq ithbāt al-ḍamān) and its waivers (al-i'fā') min al-ḍamān), provision of redress (mabda' al-ta'wīḍ) and the institutional framework which are involved in it are then discussed. The study will be concerned with the prescriptions of the Qur'ān and Sunnah on ḍamān and their explanations in the classical manuals of Islamic Law. In addition, certain post-classical texts offering specific treatment of ḍamān, particularly al-Baghdādī's Majma' al-Ḍamānāt and al-Ma'danī's Taḍmln al-Ṣunnā' will be studied. Also, decisions by juristconsults of various localities, recorded in various collections of fatāwā and court decisions in the literature of adab al-qaḍā, will be examined to enhance our knowledge of the way ḍamān has been treated. For the purpose of systemization, texts of Uṣūl al-Fiqh and Qawā'id Fiqhiyyah are essential. Similarly, evidence on the economic history of Muslim civilization in the form of actual contracts, letters, business records and institutional operations, are examined. The research also relies heavily on the codifications of Islamic law like the Ottoman Majallat al-Aḥkām al-'Adliyyah, Qadrī Bāshā's Murshid al-Ḥayrān and the Ḥanbalīs Majallat al-Aḥkām al-Shar'iyyah. Finally, an analysis of the contemporary legislations in Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia will prove that a classical concept like ḍamān is still vital for modem commerce. This also lays stress on the importance of neo-ijtihād to ensure ability and competence to apply ḍamān to fresh problems in commercial life.

R&D plays a dual role: First, it generates new knowledge and second, it develops a firm's absorptive capacity. Most of the existing strategic investment game models neglect, however, the second role of R&D. The aim of this paper is to incorporate the absorptive capacity hypothesis in such a model by endogenizing the spillover. A two-stage game is established and subsequently solved, looking for the subgame perfect Nash equilibria. Considering the comparative static properties of the model as well as the simulation results, a new effect appears: The "free-rider effect" of the models with exogenous spillover, which deteriorates the higher the spillover becomes, is now counteracted by the "absorptive capacity effect". It is found that firms will invest more in R&D to strengthen absorptive capacity when the spillover parameter is higher. (author's abstract)

Os tumores carcinoides broncopulmonares típicos são considerados tumores de baixo grau de malignidade, o que faz com que muitas vezes seja negligenciada sua capacidade de gerar metástases e levar a óbito. A atual impossibilidade de se fazer predições fidedignas do potencial metastático para individualizar a terapêutica e o manejo clínico do paciente portador de tumor carcinoide típico muitas vezes impõe situações de dúvida nas decisões da prática clínica diária. O conhecimento das características moleculares e genéticas desses tumores é a esperança de melhor compreensão de sua história natural, da identificação de seus fatores prognósticos e da avaliação de novas propostas terapêuticas. O objetivo deste estudo foi quantificar três imunomarcadores: o D2-40, o CD-34 e o Ki-67 e avaliar se eles são capazes de predizer metástase. Como informação adicional também foram avaliadas as variáveis clínicas e suas associações com metástases. Material e métodos: Foram analisados prontuários de 97 pacientes submetidos à cirurgia para tratamento de tumor carcinoide típico broncopulmonar e que apresentavam período de acompanhamento pós operatório de cinco anos completos. Foi estabelecido um banco de dados epidemiológicos, anátomopatológicos, cirúrgicos e clínicos relacionados à doença. Os blocos de parafina contendo os tumores primários, metastáticos e os linfonodos ressecados foram recuperados e reavaliados por dois patologistas para confirmação do diagnóstico histológico. Após confirmação diagnóstica foram realizadas as reações imunohistoquímicas para o D2-40, o CD34 e Ki-67. As variáveis demografia, gênero, idade, localização do tumor, tamanho do tumor, margem comprometida, total de linfonodos dissecados e a quantificação dos marcadores Ki-67, CD34 e podoplanina (área linfática e densidade) foram comparadas a cinco desfechos: metástase linfática; metástase em linfonodos hilares, peribrônquicos e pulmonares ipsilaterais (N1); metástase em linfonodos mediastinais ipsilaterais (N2); metástase hematogênica; metástase linfática ou hematogênica. Para análise estatística adotou-se o valor de significância <= 5% (p <= 0,05). Resultados: Há imunoexpressão do D2-40, do CD-34 e do KI67 nos tumores carcinóides broncopulmonares típicos, sendo possível sua quantificação. Nessa casuística não foi detectada a relação dos mesmos com metástases. Dentre as variáveis clínicas estudadas, a margem cirúrgica comprometida apresentou associação com metástase hematogênica (Mann-Witney, p=0,03) e o gênero masculino apresentou associação marginal com metástase linfática (p=0,051)
Typical bronchopulmonary carcinoid tumors are slow-growing tumors considered to be of low malignancy, a fact that often underscores their capacity to generate metastasis that leads to death. The literature does not contain any assessment of the metastatic potential that would allow for individualized and optimized therapy that could have a positive impact upon the survival rate of patients. Genetic and biomolecular studies are the most promising venues for better comprehension of the behavior and natural history of such tumors. The objective of this investigation was to analyze three immunomarkers associated to malignity phenotypes: D2-40, CD-34, and Ki-67, and to verify whether or not they are associated to metastasis. D2-40 is a specific marker of the proliferation of the lymphatic endothelium and allows for the quantification of lymphangiogenesis. CD-34 identifies the endothelial cells of micro vessels and quantifies angiogenesis. Ki-67 in turn is a marker of neoplasia cell proliferation. As additional information several clinical variables were scrutinized for their association to metastasis. Ninety-seven subjects were assessed herein. These had undergone surgery for typical bronchopulmonary carcinoid tumor and all had complied with a full 5-year follow-up period. The paraffin blocks containing the primary and metastatic tumors and the dried lymph nodes were recovered. Once the histologic diagnosis was confirmed immunohistochemical reactions were performed for D2-40, Ki-67, and CD-34. The variables demography, gender, age, tumor site, tumor size, compromised margin, total dissected lymph nodes and quantification of D2-40 (lymphatic area and density), Ki-67 and CD-34 markers were compared to 5 outcomes: lymphatic metastasis, metastasis in hilar, peribronchic and ipsilateral pulmonary lymph nodes (N1), metastasis in ipsilateral mediastinal lymph nodes (N2), haematogenic metastasis, and lymphatic or haematogenic metastasis. It was concluded that there is immunoexpression of D2-40, CD-34 and Ki-67 markers in typical bronchopulmonary carcinoid tumors, and their quantification was possible, but in this casuistic their relation to metastasis was not detected. Among the clinical variables that were investigated the compromised surgical margin presented association with haematogenic metastasis (Mann-Witney, p=0.03), and the male gender was boderline associated to lymphatic metastasis (p=0,051)

AbstractThe rise of digital activism in the Arab Spring and Euromaidan demonstrated the significance of social media and new technologies in mobilizing civil society activists in authoritarian regimes. Digital citizen activism has also been on the rise in post-Soviet Central Asia, with evidence that the October events in Kyrgyzstan in 2020 and the January riots in Kazakhstan in 2022 were fueled by heightened tension and the mobilization of citizens on social media. This chapter investigates how digital activism evolves and engages with authoritarian states in autocratic post-Soviet Central Asia. It is critical to understand how digital activists negotiate their roles of cooperation, contestation, and legitimation discourse (using the ( Lewis, D. (2013). Such a broad selection of cases widens the scope of this chapter and contributes to the understanding of digital citizen activism in non-Western settings. Ultimately, this chapter reveals the limits of digital activism in autocracies and how the authoritarian state manages to impose legitimation discourse on such activism.

We demonstrate workings of a near-field thermal rectification device that uses phase change material to achieve asymmetry in heat transfer. We exploit the temperature dependent dielectric properties of VO2 due metal-insulator transition near 341 K. The device operates near the critical temperature of the phase change material. Analogous to an electrical diode, heat transfer coefficient is very high in one direction (forward bias) while it is very small when the polarity of temperature gradient is reversed (reverse bias). Rectification as high as 15 can be obtained for minimal temperature difference of 5 K. We show that high rectification is achieved by using 1-D triangular and rectangular surface gratings. The rectification factor is dramatically enhanced in the near-field due to the spectral mismatch between dissimilar materials for the negative polarity.

Introduction: According to the studies, a quarter of people who drink alcohol suffer at least one depressive episode in their lifetime. It has also been found that one-third of people who suffer from depression, abusively consume psychoactive substances, such as alcohol, as a form of self-healing. Aim: In this retrospective study, we propose to statistically quantify the relationship between alcohol-related mental and behavioural illnesses and depression spectrum disorders. Method: The retrospective study was conducted on a group of hospitalized patients, between January 1st and June 30th, 2018, at "Elisabeta Doamna" Psychiatric Hospital, in Galati, Romania. For diagnosis we used the ICD-10 (The ICD-10 Classification of Mental and Behavioral Disorders. (Clinical description, diagnostic guidelines and psychometric tests, such as HAM-D (Hamilton Depression Rating Scale)), AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test). Patients were selected among those who had a combination of mental and behavioural disorders due to alcohol and depressive spectrum disorders. Results: Between January 1st and June 30th, 2018, a quarter of total 6316 hospitalized patients, or 24.79% (1566 patients) were diagnosed with alcohol-related disorders, and 5.4% (341 cases) had a dual diagnosis, with alcohol-related disorders associated with depressive elements. During this 6-month period, of all cases of alcohol-related disorders, it was found that approximately 22% had a dual diagnosis, respectively, the combination of alcohol-related disorders with depressive spectrum disorders or depressive elements. Conclusions: Unfortunately, it is estimated that depression will become a secondary cause of disability worldwide after cardiovascular disease. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), this disease affects more than 320 million people worldwide, and its combination with alcohol abuse is alarming. Therefore, patients with dual diagnosis require a multidisciplinary therapeutic approach to reduce or even neutralize the adverse consequences that may occur in the psycho-social, medical, family, economic, or behavioural context.

Research on human-AI teams usually provides experts with a single label, which ignores the uncertainty in a model's recommendation. Conformal prediction (CP) is a well established line of research that focuses on building a theoretically grounded, calibrated prediction set, which may contain multiple labels. We explore how such prediction sets impact expert decision-making in human-AI teams. Our evaluation on human subjects finds that set valued predictions positively impact experts. However, we notice that the predictive sets provided by CP can be very large, which leads to unhelpful AI assistants. To mitigate this, we introduce D-CP, a method to perform CP on some examples and defer to experts. We prove that D-CP can reduce the prediction set size of non-deferred examples. We show how D-CP performs in quantitative and in human subject experiments (n=120). Our results suggest that CP prediction sets improve human-AI team performance over showing the top-1 prediction alone, and that experts find D-CP prediction sets are more useful than CP prediction sets.

Background: Vitamin D deficiency is affecting the health of humans around the world, and different factors associated with it were studied among different populations. Vitamin D deficiency was studied more often as a predictor to diseases. However, certain factors that could be associated with vitamin D deficiency were not explored among women, specifically in Qatar. Objective: To explore potential risk factors of vitamin D deficiency among women aged 20 to 65, using a sample of records from women volunteers to Qatar Biobank. Hypothesis: The study potential factors (age, BMI, education, income, milk consumption, occupation, pregnancy, physical activity and soft drinks) are associated with vitamin D deficiency. Methodology: We assessed some potential risk factors to vitamin D deficiency using data from Qatar Biobank (n=1000). Women aged 20-65 years old were included in the study. Univariate and multiple logistic regression models were used to model the association between our study potential factors (age, BMI, education, income, milk consumption, occupation, number of children, physical activity, and soft drinks) and being vitamin D deficient. Analysis was conducted using Stata (IC) version 15.0. Results: 654 women out of 1000 had vitamin D deficiency (serum level<20ng/mL), and 346 women that had normal level of vitamin D (serum level>20ng/mL). Vitamin D deficiency was significantly associated with women who drank soda 1-3 per month (p-value= 0.038) and 1-3 per week or more (p-value= 0.021). Also, women who were 41-50 years old (p-value= 0.006), 50 years and older (p-value= 0.000) and women who were students as their occupation (p-value= 0.003). Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency was common among women in Qatar, as found in the present study. Students, women who drank soda, and younger age (<50) had the highest vitamin D deficiency

DeepTech startups are companies based on a scientific discovery or meaningful engineering innovation. Deep Tech startups involve significant technological risk and R&D. However, Deep Tech innovation is critical to effectively address humanities grand challenges. DeepTech companies have the potential to catalyze change, establish new industries, and disrupt existing ones. Cutting-edge technologies like AI, solar power, electric vehicles, biotech, advanced manufacturing, and space-based broadband have the potential to pave new paths for economic growth, social equity, and environmental sustainability in the region. Today, with 340 ventured-back DeepTech startups, the DeepTech ecosystem in LAC is valued at USD 8 billion and has much potential to grow. The LAC region has strong advantages such as talent and R&D cost, to further develop and grow the DeepTech ecosystem in LAC. By fostering DeepTech in the region, LAC countries will benefit from the creation of jobs, as well as from potential access to improved basic products and services. Poor and vulnerable communities may greatly benefit from the adoption and creation of new technologies.

A vegetation classi?cation and map for Guadalupe Mountains National Park (NP) is presented as part of the National Park Service Inventory & Monitoring - Vegetation Inventory Program to classify, describe, and map vegetation communities in more than 280 national park units across the United States. Guadalupe Mountains NP lies in far west Texas and contains the highest point in the state, Guadalupe Peak (8,751 ft; 2,667 m). The mountain escarpments descend some 5,000 ft (1,500 m) to the desert basins below forming a complex geologic landscape that supports vegetation communities ranging from montane coniferous forests down to desert grasslands and scrub. Following the US National Vegetation Classi?cation (USNVC) standard, we identi?ed 129 plant associations hierarchically tiered under 29 groups and 17 macrogroups, making it one of the most ecologically diverse National Park Service units in the southwestern United States. An aspect that adds to this diversity is that the park supports communities that extend southward from the Rocky Mountains (?ve macrogroups) and Great Plains (one macrogroup) and northward from the Chihuahuan Desert (two macrogroups) and Sierra Madre Orientale of Mexico (three macrogroups). The remaining six macrogroups are found in the Great Basin (one macrogroup), and throughout the southwestern United States (remaining ?ve macrogroups). Embedded in this matrix are gypsum dunelands and riparian zones and wetlands that add further complexity. We describe in detail this vegetation classi?cation, which is based on 540 vegetation plots collected between 2006 and 2010. Full descriptions and diagnostic keys to the plant associations along with an overall plant species list are provided as appendices. Based on the vegetation classi?cation and associated plot data, the vegetation map was developed using a combined strategy of automated digital object-oriented image classi?cation and direct-analog image interpretation of four-band National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) aerial photography from 2004 and 2008 and Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite imagery. The map is designed to facilitate ecologically-based natural resource management at a 1:24,000 scale with 0.5-ha minimum map unit size. The map legend is hierarchically structured: the upper Level 1 consists of 16 map units corresponding in most cases to the USNVC group level, and an additional map unit describing built-up land and agriculture; Level 2 is composed of 48 nested map units re?ecting various combinations of plant associations. A ?eld-based accuracy assessment using 341 vegetation plots revealed a Level 1 overall accuracy of 79% with 90% CI of 74?84% and 68% with 90% CI of 59?76% at Level 2. An annotated legend with summary descriptions of the units, distribution maps, aerial photo examples of map unit polygons, and representative photos are provided in Appendix D. Large wall-size poster maps at 1:35,000 scale were also produced following NPS cartographic standards. Outcomes from this project provide the most detailed vegetation classi?cation and highest resolution mapping for Guadalupe Mountains NP to date to support many uses including ?re, recreation, vegetation, and wildlife management, among others. The upper Level 1 map is particularly suited to landscape-scale, park-wide planning and linkages to its sister park, Carlsbad Caverns NP. The Level 2 mapping provides added detail for use at a more localized project scale. The overall accuracy of the maps was good, but because Guadalupe Mountains NP is primarily wilderness park, there were logistical challenges to map development and testing in remote areas that should be considered in planning management actions. In this context, some map units would bene?t from further development and accuracy assessment. In particular, a higher resolution mapping of McKittrick Creek riparian habitat at 1:6,000 scale or ?ner is recommended for this important habitat in the park. In addition, developing a structural canopy height model from LiDAR imagery would be useful to more accurately quantify woody canopy density and height to support ?re management and other habitat management issues. With respect to understanding vegetation dynamics in this time of rapid environmental change, the 540 vegetation plots themselves are su?ciently georeferenced and have the data resolution to be useful in detecting change at the decadal scales across much of the park. To this end, an additional recommendation would be to install more plots to ?ll the gaps among the main vegetation units of the park, both spatially and thematically. Overall, the Vegetation and Classi?cation Map for Guadalupe Mountains NP will support the park?s management e?orts and enhance regional understanding of vegetation and ecology of ecosystems of the southwestern United States.

As a result of the samples taken from the patient, the whole genome sequence of the SARS-CoV-2 was isolated on January 7, 2020, by Chinese scientists in a short time. WHO announced on February 11, 2020; that “COVID-19” will become the official name of the disease. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director of the WHO, said the epidemic meant “ko”, “corona”, “vi” for “virus” and “d” for “disease” as first described on December 31, 2019. Such a name has been preferred to avoid stigmatizing a particular region, animal species or human. The infection, which started to spread first in China and then in nearby countries, spread to most countries later on. The epidemic soon reached an international dimension, affecting the whole world. As a result, the WHO considered COVID-19 as an international public health problem and declared it as a pandemic on January 30, 2020. In humans, coronaviruses cause some cases of colds and respiratory infections that can be fatal, such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), and Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In recent years, new viral infections have been detected periodically in various countries. The first epidemic; was observed in 2002-2003 as a result of the crossing of a new coronavirus from bat origin to humans through palm civet cats in Guangdong Province, China. This virus, called SARS, affected a total of 8422 people in China and caused 916 deaths (11% mortality, however different rates are given in different literatures). The second epidemic event occurred approximately 10 years later. In 2012, the MERS coronavirus (MERS-CoV) emerged from bat origin through a dromedary camel in Saudi Arabia. It affected a total of 2494 people and caused 858 deaths (mortality rate of 34%). WHO has declared it as a pandemic after the outbreak and scientists are doing great efforts to identify the characterization of the new coronavirus and to develop antiviral therapies and vaccines. Clinical studies and vaccination studies are still ongoing fastly. Also, the pathogenesis of the virus is still not fully known, and new studies are needed in this regard. Currently, effective infection control intervention is the only way to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2. The most appropriate prophylactic regimen for patients under observation due to COVID-19 related disease is unknown. For this reason, treatment protocols should be planned by following the current guidelines. This study consists of evaluating the opinions about the history of pandemics associated with COVID-19, related definitions and the projects being carried out with the compilation of available resources, the development stages of the pandemic and the projection of postpandemic interaction so far."

Heat production (HP) or energy expenditure for activity (EEa) is of fundamental nutritional importance for livestock because it determines the proportion of ingested nutrients available for productive functions. Previous estimates of EEa are unreliable and vary widely with different indirect methodologies. This leads to erroneous nutritional strategies, especially when intake on pasture does not meet nutritional requirements and supplementation is necessary for acceptable production. Therefore, the objective of this project was to measure EEa in different classes of livestock (beef cattle and goats) over a wide range of ecological and management conditions to develop and evaluate simple means of prediction. In the first study in Israel, small frame (SF) and large frame (LF) cows (268 and 581 kg) were monitored during spring, summer, and autumn. Feed intake by SF cows per unit of metabolic weight was greater (P < 0.001) than that by LF cows in both spring and summer and their apparent selection of higher quality herbage in spring was greater (P < 0.10) than that of LF cows. SF cows grazed more hours per day and walked longer distances than the LF cows during all seasons. The coefficient of specific costs of activities (kJ•kg BW-0.75•d-1) and of locomotion (J•kg BW-0.75•m-1) were smaller for the SF cows. In the second study, cows were monitored in March, May, and September when they grazed relatively large plots, 135 and 78 ha. Energy cost coefficients of standing, grazing, and horizontal locomotion derived were similar to those of the previous study based on data from smaller plots. However, the energy costs of walking idle and of vertical locomotion were greater than those found by Brosh et al. (2006) but similar to those found by Aharoni et al. (2009). In the third study, cows were monitored in February and May in a 78-ha plot with an average slope of 15.5°, whereas average plot slopes of the former studies ranged between 4.3 and 6.9°. Energy cost coefficients of standing, grazing, and walking idle were greater than those calculated in the previous studies. However, the estimated energy costs of locomotion were lower in the steeper plot. A comparison on a similar HP basis, i.e., similar metabolizable energy (ME) intake, shows that the daily energy spent on activities in relation to daily HP increased by 27% as the average plot slope increased from 5.8 and 6.02 to 15.5°. In the fourth study, cows grazing in a woodland habitat were monitored as in previous studies in December, March, and July. Data analysis is in progress. In the first US experiment, Boer and Spanish does with two kids were used in an experiment beginning in late spring at an average of 24 days after kidding. Two does of each breed resided in eight 0.5-ha grass/forb pastures. Periods of 56, 60, 63, 64, and 73 days in length corresponded to mid-lactation, early post-weaning, the late dry period, early gestation, and mid-gestation. EEa expressed as a percentage of the ME requirement for maintenance plus activity in confinement (EEa%) was not influenced by stocking rate, breed, or period, averaging 49%. Behavioral activities (e.g., time spent grazing, walking, and idle, distance traveled) were not highly related to EEa%, although no-intercept regressions against time spent grazing/eating and grazing/eating plus walking indicated an increase in EEa% of 5.8 and 5.1%/h, respectively. In the second study, animal types were yearling Angora doeling goats, yearling Boer wether goats, yearling Spanish wether goats, and Rambouilletwether sheep slightly more than 2 yr of age. Two animals of each type were randomly allocated to one of four pastures 9.3, 12.3, 4.6, and 1.2 ha in area. The experiment was conducted in the summer with three periods, 30, 26, and 26 days in length. EEa% was affected by an interaction between animal type and period (Angora: 16, 17, and 15; Boer: 60, 67, and 34; Spanish: 46, 62, and 42; sheep: 22, 12, and 22% in periods 1, 2, and 3, respectively (SE = 6.1)). EEa% of goats was predicted with moderate accuracy (R2 = 0.40-0.41) and without bias from estimates of 5.8 and 5.1%/h spent grazing/eating and grazing/eating plus walking, respectively, determined in the first experiment; however, these methods were not suitable for sheep. These methods of prediction are simpler and more accurate than currently recommended for goats by the National Research Council.
