Abstract (sommario):
The paper deals with the language and style of major Czech and Czech-American periodicals published in the mid-19th century. Czech periodicals of the time are represented by the papers Pražský Posel and Národní Nowiny; the Czech-American ones include the weeklies Slowan Amerikánský and Národní Noviny. The language and style of both of these types of papers are analysed in order to identify the similarities and differences, with citations illustrating the phenomena explored. In this way, the research aims to show which aspects of the “stylistic norm” change first and most strikingly in a different language and national environment.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Using examples of studies published in three international journals in the field of linguistics, the study deals with the differences between domestic and Anglo-Saxon style of scientific writing. I examine studies of Slovak and Czech authors publishing in Slovak and/or Czech and in English and compare them with the English studies of international authors for whom English is also a non-native language. I consider English to be a lingua franca which is used by the members of international scientific communities as a primary means of communication. I focus on the selected aspects of the studies which include their compositional structure, introductions and conclusions, the authorial presence, author´s self-confidence and modesty and the title of the study. The results of my analysis of these aspects in the studies of Slovak and Czech authors point to their inclination to use domestic style of writing, while in the case of their writing in English there are noticeable tendencies to hybridize the procedures of the domestic and the Anglo-Saxon styles. On the other hand, studies by international authors bear features of the Anglo-Saxon style of scientific writing. I do not consider these styles to be qualitatively different but rather complementary, as their mastery and cultivation is justified by the need to pursue scientific knowledge and communicate its results at both national and international levels.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Many literary texts prove a tendency to simulate features of diverse communicative acts, styles and genres that are primarily applied in non-literary spheres of communication (for instance journalism, administration, science). The aim of this paper is to suggest a possible theoretical framework for this phenomenon and to describe some ways of simulating non-literary styles in literary texts. The aforementioned simulating can be seen as a form of interdiscursivity that introduces external elements into literary texts. The functioning of it is conditioned by a process of decontextualization and recontextualization that is signalled by various paratextual and textual cues. Taking three Czech prosaic works as examples, the concrete use of this form of interdiscursivity is illustrated in the last part of the paper.

Abstract (sommario):
The subject of research in this article is narrative texts in Russian and Czech, which are compared in order to determine the specifics of the aspectual models of narrative in each language and the regularities of integration of interpretive mechanisms in artistic discourse. The comparison is carried out with the help of the Czech-Russian parallel subcorpus of the Czech National Corpus. In both languages, the dominant forms here are the perfective past tense forms, but significant differences in the combination of aspect forms have also been identified. In Czech, more often than in Russian, one or more resultant actions included in the narrative are represented as an ongoing process by means of non-perfective verbs. Our study confirms the assumptions of cognitive linguistics about the dual role of grammatical categorization, simultaneously directed at the world around us and the world of language, and allows us to clarify the mechanism of alignment and interaction of these aspects of categorization. On the one hand, the categorical semantics of the verb aspect and perfective and non-perfective forms fixes the cultural-historical specificity of perceiving the denoted elements of the dynamic world by the speech community. On the other hand, the grammatical conceptualization is influenced by the intrasystemic relations between verb categories and forms. Besides, differences in national discourse traditions have been revealed between the compared languages, namely the influence of the style of old epic poems on the pragmatic potential of preterit forms in modern Russian.

Abstract (sommario):
The article analyses the style of two picture series dealing with Czech history. The analysis focuses primarily on the way of mediating historical knowledge as well as forming and establishing cultural memory in the two series which are compared. In connection with this, the use of language, the construction of meanings and the interplay between verbal and visual components are described. The picture series investigated represent opposing approaches to the issue of cultural (historical) memory. The objective of Obrázky z českých dějin a pověstí (Pictures from Czech History and Legends; 1980, revised edition 1996) is to depict a traditional version of Czech history and support its adoption by recipients (children being the main target group). Obrázky include various informal, derogatory and anachronistic elements, but these components are used purposefully to attract the interest of recipients in a didactic presentation of historical events. On the other hand, Opráski sčeskí historje (perhaps: Pictures from Czech History; 2014–2015) submit an alternative, subversive, comical and absurd version of Czech history. Their objective is to destruct the traditional view of such history. In order to achieve this effect, Opráskitake advantage of intentional orthographical mistakes (with great invention), play with the language, polysemy of words, anachronisms and intertextual relations to contemporary popular culture.

Abstract (sommario):
The article deals with linguistic aspects of a Czech Biblical text originating in the period of the beginning of the Czech National Revival which has until recently been entirely forgotten. The text is a Tetraevangelion written by a Catholic priest František Novotný from Luže (1768–1826), an almost forgotten contemporary and collaborator of the great representatives of the Czech National Revival Josef Dobrovský and Josef Jungmann. Novotný was an expert on Latin, Greek, Church Slavonic and old and new Czech (he was also the author of the early grammar of Czech that was published in Czech). His four Gospels in Czech, published in 1810–1811, belong to the “learning type” translations. It continues the Czech Biblical translation tradition (at the turn of the 19th century represented primarily by the translation of the New Testament and of the entire Bible by František Faustin Procházka, which followed mainly the baroque Catholic St Wenceslas Bible and the Kralice Bible of the Moravian brethren), but has many specific features. The article focuses on the phenomenon that manifested itself (during the author's research of Novotný's text lasting several years) as its main and most interesting trait, namely, a strong influence of the Church Slavonic Biblical text, which is an absolutely rare phenomenon at the beginning of the Czech National Revival. The author, confronting the previous Biblical translation tradition with Novotný’s, reveals a number of innovations that were materialised in Novotný's translation and whose origin in the Church Slavonic Bible is certain or at least very probable. The innovations concern various levels of linguistic description, mainly syntax and lexicon, but also word formation and morphology. The most interesting of Novotný’s novelties is his usage of the adjectival past participle ending with -(v)ší, since this category was introduced into literary Czech in the period of the Czech Revival. It is also important that Church Slavonic is, with high probability, the only source of the enrichment and “refreshment” of the Czech Biblical style that is written in another Slavonic language (Novotný seems not to use any living Slavonic languages).

Abstract (sommario):
The present paper examines the contexts and consequences of sentence splitting in English, Czech and French translated fiction. In the data extracted from a parallel (multilingual) corpus, we analyze first a language-specific context of sentence splitting (sententialization of non-finite verb forms in translations from English and French into Czech), and second, contexts of splitting occurring in all directions of translation. We conclude that sentence boundaries are usually introduced at the point of a sentence entailing the fewest modifications in the target sentence, especially between two coordinate clauses; and that a systematic sentence splitting, deeply modifying the style of the source text, involves the effect of simplification and normalization.

Abstract (sommario):
The current article is devoted to the analysis and description of the language of a modern diplomatic text, which represents a diplomatic substyle of a business style. In the Czech language, which possesses a wide stylistic differentiation, a diplomatic substyle remains insufficiently studied. A diplomatic substyle is an integral part of the language of diplomatic communication, in which the Heads of the State and the Government, the ministers of foreign affairs, and representative institutions are involved. This fact brings it closer to the language of political communication. For this reason, the author aims at characterizing the stylistic features of traditional text types in the diplomatic correspondence between the Czech Republic and the Russian Federation, and highlighting their similarities and differences in form as well as in content. By the example of original texts the structure of a diplomatic document is represented: a form of address, protocol forms of courtesy and compliments, its semantic core and the argumentation part as essential parts of a document. The fore cited analysis of the functional-communicative features of the diplomatic texts lexical composition shows the presence of professional names and terms, idioms and cliché, as well as new lexical units and terms that reflect socio-political changes in the Czech Republic and new geopolitical realities.

One can wonder if school practices can be considered as a good practice if teachers views were neglected, one can also imagine what it would happen if none of us agreed that different people learn differently according to their abilities, needs and circumstances. This case study evaluates the views and practices that language teachers held in one of the basic primary schools in Prague -Czech Republic- regarding the accommodations of the needs of students with dyslexia according to their preferred learning styles. The aim of this study was to explore the different issues, which are with and against the different theories of learning styles, according to the latest researchers and most importantly to explore what practice has to say to us about the practicality of putting some of these theories when it comes to meet the needs of students with dyslexia. Hence, as a reader you will be able to observe the ways and procedures that Czech language teachers follow to meet the needs of their students with dyslexia through the identification of their learning styles, the challenges that face them in their journey, their training needs, and most importantly their discrepancy of practices according to their knowledge, experiences and beliefs about learning styles. Abstract (sommario):
The thesis is divided into two parts. The first and crucial part offers a translation of the first two sections of the novel An Equal Music (1999) by Vikram Seth, a postcolonial author of Indian origin. His novel, or "musical romance", is commonly considered to be one of the best novels about music. The translation is followed by a study of the author's life and works, of his style and the reception of his novel and, finally, by an analysis of essential translation problems. The main focus is on speakability issues in various voices throughout the novel; the ambivalence of and difficulty in translating the title; on translation strategies regarding the poetic layers of the text and on the method of translating names and other facts. Given the specific subgenre of the book, the key subchapter analyses the translated musical excerpts from the novel. Keywords Vikram Seth, An Equal Music, contemporary fiction in English, translation, Czech language, style, translation analysis.

Abstract (sommario):
The thesis consists of two parts. The first, practical part presents a translation of short stories The Portobello Road (1956), The Curtain Blown by the Breeze (1961) and The Young Man Who Discovered the Secret of Life (2000) by the Scottish writer Muriel Spark. The texts represent various periods of Spark's writing career and offer a complex insight into her style and its various shades. The translation is succeeded by a study focusing on the life and work of Muriel Spark and mainly on an analysis of the key translation issues encountered in the process of translation. The key problems include the translation of Spark's specific literary language, the rendering of natural speech and the idiolects of the characters, the translation of names and other culture-specific facts. The theoretical part devoted to the translation analysis stresses the link between various translation theories and the work of a translator.

The thesis is divided into six main parts. The first part deals with general stylistic elements, the second focuses on the style and language in the contemporary speech of Petr Vichnar. Part three deals with the style and language of this author in the past whereas the fourth section shows the transformation of speech. The fifth and sixth parts deal with work in television and sports langure and a semiotic analysis respectively. Everyone changes in thein profession, and sports journalists are no exception either. Petr Vichnar began his career in sports journalism at the time when Wi-Fi networks, which allow rapid acquisition of information, were not in common usage. He began to moderate, though not yet using a teleprompter / auto-cue, and so he either had to keep everything in his head or use notes on paper. All this and more contributed to a change of expression of this most important sports commentator and the programs or matches on which he commentated. Abstract (sommario):
The diploma thesis presents own research method for examination of speech formations. It focuses on examination of televised political debates. The method applied here may be characterized as an organized hermeneutic analysis of political discourse. Through the application of an analytical - philosophical approach (e.g. application of the theory of maxima, illocutionary acts evaluation, and analysis of arguments and verification of their truthfulness), the method allows us to establish objective facts of the debate as well as some personal features of debate participants. To examine texts, the theoretical knowledge of distinguished authors (J. J. Austin, K. Bayer, T. A. van Dijk, N. Fairclough, H. P. Grice, J. Habermas, J. Kraus, G. N. Leeche, J. R. Searl, and others) have been made use of. In addition to the literary survey, the thesis also includes the argumentation in respect of selection of the method, selection of talk shows, transcript of debates from TV records, transformation of the text into an analysable form, and research methodology. Accordingly, a specific communication model of programme is drawn up, the talk show discourse is analysed as a whole, and the styles and argumentation of selected participants are examined and analysed, which is followed by a comprehensive assessment of the...

Abstract (sommario):
Résumé This thesis deals with the personality and also with the work of Frantisek Travnicek, an important Czech linguist living between the years 1888 and 1961. Firstly, his life is briefly outlined, secondly this personality is introduced as an influential linguist of Czech Studies, as well as a long-time university official and teacher. His post-war political activities in the Communist Party are also mentioned. The thesis is focused on the works of Travnicek with a particular respect to his linguodidactic activities. One part is dedicated to his scientific writings and takes the cultural and historical context into account. This part summarises his considerably extensive and thematically varied work. Five essential areas of linguistics were defined (grammar, historical grammar, phonetics, phonology, word-formation and dialectology) which were much enriched by Travnicek. Nevertheless, there is a mention of some work which is of the kind that is impossible to label with any category listed, or the work which is represented in each category just by several writings. Finally, the influence on Travnicek's scientific activity is touched upon. The last and crucial part of the thesis tackles Travnicek's linguodidactic activities with respect to the context of the particular period. Concerning the topics of the...

Abstract (sommario):
The article follows up on a language analysis of selected German and Czech biologically themed television programmes for children. The analysis focuses on intermediation of knowledge, primarily on the methods of presenting and explaining technical words. The follow-up analysis examines other aspects of the language style observed in these educational programmes. This concerns elements of various character that can be generally called strategies for obtaining and maintaining the interest of the target audience. They include both formal and language means, and partially also content elements. A specific area of the study examines methods of intermediating biological topics that are considered taboo in everyday communication in society. The examined television shows are mutually compared in these aspects. The study additionally examines whether or not it is possible to see qualitative differences between the language style and strategies in educational programmes for children and in thematically comparable popular scientific shows for adults.

Abstract (sommario):
The image of Czechoslovakia in PKF is hardly surprising or original. It was drawn using a style completely subordinated to propaganda purposes, and the portrait of the Czech state authorities was no different from dignitaries in communist Poland. Even the most laconic text of the PKF commentary was filled with cliché propaganda slogans, and trivial events, such as the minister’s visit, were exaggerated using socialist realist pathos. Changes can be noticed in the narrative of PKF in the period 1945–1956. The 1940s are characterized by the language of the Cold War, while the topics of PKF in the 1950s were enriched with reports from cultural life, which made the style of PKF’s comments easier to understand, often even humorous.

Abstract (sommario):
The work of Jiři Levý, the pioneering Czech translation scholar of the 20th century, shares a lot of common ground with the (neo)hermeneutic approach in translation studies. A closer look reveals, however, a good number of differing, and even opposite stances. For chronological reasons, Levý himself cannot be regarded a member of the neohermeneutic movement in translation studies; thus, the following questions arise: 1) What is the extent of overlap between Levý’s work and that of the main representatives of the hermeneutic approach in translation studies, mainly in Germany, and 2) how can this overlap be explained? This article seeks to demonstrate the following: There are full ‘matches’ between the two approaches, including some aspects of methodological approach, the value of texts, creativity, translating as a decision process as well as Levý’s concept of perception on the one hand and the hermeneutic circle on the other. A partial overlap between the two approaches has been identified in terms of the following matters: the applicability of translation theory, the language and style of theoretical works, the application of game theory, and the focus on individuals (recipient, translator). As regards differences, these include thematic focus, the idea of a personal link between the text and its recipient, and the concept of subjectivity. The purpose of the article is to show that, rather than being a (direct) predecessor, Levý can be regarded as a precursor of the hermeneutic approach in translation studies. Hopefully, illustrating this affinity between Levý and the hermeneutic approach will foster an interest in his theory, which is marked by openness and dynamism – qualities that also abide in the hermeneutical approaches of our present time.

Abstract (sommario):
Lifelong learning has become an essential part of each profession. For this reason, personalized and adaptive learning has been drawing attention of professionals in the field of formal as well as informal education in the last few years. The effort has been made to design adaptive study supports regarding students' requirements, abilities and current knowledge. In the Czech Republic, particularly at the University of Ostrava, a team of educators, didactics professionals and IT professionals has been applying their mind to personalized learning in the electronic environment. They have been developing a suitable learning environment to fit students' learning styles. The paper describes a general model and a theory of adaptive eLearning from the perspective of the University of Ostrava professionals. It also demonstrates hard facts of the research in the field of language learning. This paper, Individualization of foreign language teaching through adaptive eLearning, is an extended version of the paper published in the ICWL 2015 workshop proceedings.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter introduces a case study on the use of video summaries in a university setting. It presents a practical insight into a simple, yet complex and versatile activity that aims at improving the language and communication skills of students in authentic intercultural academic situations. This activity has been developed, implemented and used in language courses at Masaryk University (MU), Brno, Czech Republic, and Universidad Nacional del Sur (UNS), Bahía Blanca, Argentina, since February 2014. Students undertaking language courses at MU and UNS write texts and record video summaries outside of class. They then reflect and discuss linguistic, cultural and organisational topics in class or online discussion forums. The activity consists of a set of interconnected tasks that improve students' understanding of similarities and differences between written and spoken styles, encourage their learning autonomy and enhance the authenticity of their language development.

Abstract (sommario):
The article analyzes the Slovak temporal frequentative adverbs with the suffix - krát : viackrát , mnohokrát , veľakrát and častokrát . The first part examines the frequency of these adverbs in the Slovak National Corpus focused on literary usage: both in the general composition of the corpus and in individual functional styles, as well as in texts created before 1955; as well as in the corpus Araneum Slovacum Beta Pentaplex II Majus, based on Internet texts and reflecting colloquial usage. The following data are given on the frequency of synonymous variants with the formant - ráz in these cases in their ratio to adverbs with - krá t. In addition, in terms of frequency, cases of combined/ separate spelling of formants - krát / - ráz are distinguished. It is shown that mnohokrát dominates the artistic style of the literary language, as well as in older texts; in modern language there is a tendency to some expansion of veľakrát and častokrát . Variants with the formant - ráz are not widely used. In the second part of the article there ara considered the Czech equivalents of these Slovak adverbs. The materials of the parallel Slovak-Czech corpus, which is part of the Slovak National Corpus, are used, while translations from Slovak to Czech are analyzed separately, and from Czech to Slovak separately. It was revealed that, firstly, the adverbs in the two languages, despite their significant formal proximity, are not always equivalent in semantic volume, and secondly, Slovak translators often strive to push away as much as possible from the formal similarity of Slovak and Czech adverbs.

Abstract (sommario):
This article focuses on the use of a 3D multi-user virtual environment in language teaching and presents the results of four-year research at the Palacky University Olomouc Faculty of Education (Czech Republic). Language teaching was conducted in an experimental form in the 3D virtual worlds of Second Life and Kitely (experimental group) and, in parallel to this, there was also traditional teaching conducted on identical topics in the form of lectures using a textbook (control group). The didactic test, which was presented to both of the groups in an identical form before the start of teaching and after its implementation, verified the effect of teaching in the experimental group by comparing the achieved results of both groups. Out of the three components of mother tongue teaching (grammar, literature, style and communication education) students achieved partial better results (in the case of points focused on the visualization of the subject matter, these were statistically significant) in literature. Students from the control group performed better in grammar and style and communication education. Based on the achieved results, we discuss the selected psychological implications of these results and can state the most appropriate use of MUVE in teaching those topics that have the possibility of role playing, dramatization and group cooperation.

Abstract (sommario):
The study is aimed at unveiling the discrepancies in educational cultures, more specifically of creating a dichotomy between the teacher-centered cultures, specific for the Eastern European countries and the learner-centered cultures, of Western European countries, in distance learning virtual communities. Starting from a defintion of culture, as it was stated by Geert Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions that he developed and applied along the years in the analysis of differing cultures, with a specific application on the most recent sixth dimention and with a view to Edward Hall's perspective on high context vs. low context cultures, I will try to understand the traps in which learners are stuck when involving in online distance learning courses, in ESP. The study is based on a survey, developed as part of a doctoral study, by Rita Zaltsman, from the International Center of Modern Education in Prague, Czech Republic. The results of this study will be used in understanding if the same cultural paradigm is valid for the Romanian students enrolled in ESP distance learning courses, as in the case of their Western colleagues. The findings will help us develop a platform of ESP online courses which will perfectly suit the needs and wants of the target audience. Besides the demographic data, which are extremely important in evaluating a society, the following cultural issued need to be considered: content of material, power of multimedia, formal versus informal style of communication, style of written communication, as well as Web design. Cultural sensitivity can help us develop an integrated course in ESP, that will later on be adapted to other categories of audience: Arab or Chinese students, eager to enroll with Romanian universities. The same process can be applied when developing an online platform for Romanian as a Foreign Language, aimed at Erasmus students and international students enrolled in Romanian universities. It is very important to understand the role of e-learning in crossing boundaries, in enabling learners to involve in different forms of coomunication. This can be done through a better understanding of the classical teaching and learning methods, what needs to be changed and what caters the needs of the modern distance learner, in the special case of foreign language acquisition.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper deals with the process and results of a pilot study of a language learning styles questionnaire (Ehrman & Leaver, 2003) translated into Czech. The questionnaire is based on psychological personality typology and it focuses on cognitive dimensions of the language learning process. In order to test the reliability of the translation an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was performed, as the data on the original questionnaire reliability are not available. Factor analysis did not confirm the reliability of the Czech version scale. However, the original questionnaire setting suggests that it is not constructed of independent factors, thus a factor analysis cannot identify independent dimensions. Considering the piloting results analysis is the EFA does not appear as a relevant method for measuring the reliability of the questionnaire scales. The research will thus use the piloted Czech version of the questionnaire followed by a qualitative research stage.
