Abstract (sommario):
The paper discusses the ceremony of the Loving Cup that follows the dinners of many City of London livery companies. It concludes that, far from being of Saxon origin, as has been widely believed, it was a Romantic revival of the late eighteenth century derived, almost certainly, from the medieval use of grace cups.

Abstract (sommario):
[abstFig src='/00280002/10.jpg' width=""300"" text='Claws attached to suction cups' ]Efficient economical test methods are widely needed worldwide. One target of this is to develop climbing robots that check for defects in concrete. These concrete-wall-climbing robots generally use suction cups to support themselves and test apparatus, but the danger exists of this expensive equipment falling. This may occur due to one of two reasons. The first is inadequate ring-seal decompression in suction cups and the second is suction cup slippage. We have added claws to suction cups to help prevent slippage. The claws we developed are attached to the suction cups to help grip the wall. In the sections below, we discuss the scratch tests we performed to test claw effectiveness in improving suction cup grip. We then prove through tests under actual conditions that the estimated grip force matched that of an actual suction cup's grip force with the claw.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In the selection of oviposition sites female mosquitoes use various cues to assess site quality to optimize survival of progeny. The presence of conspecific larvae influences this process. Interactive effects of oviposition site selection were studied in the malaria mosquito Anopheles coluzzii Coetzee & Wilkerson in dual- and no-choice assays, by exposing single gravid mosquitoes to oviposition cups containing 1) larvae of different developmental stages, 2) larvae-conditioned water (LCW), and 3) cups where visual cues of conspecific larvae were absent. Early-stage conspecific larvae had a positive effect on the oviposition response. By contrast, late stages of conspecific larvae had a negative effect. Oviposition choice was dependent on larval density. Moreover, in oviposition cups where larvae were hidden from view, late-stage larvae had a significant negative effect on oviposition suggesting the involvement of olfactory cues. LCW had no effect on oviposition response, indicating involvement of chemicals produced by larvae in vivo. It is concluded that the presence of larvae in a breeding site affects the oviposition response depending on the development stage of the larvae. These responses appear to be mediated by olfactory cues emitted by the larval habitat containing live larvae, resulting in the enhanced reproductive fitness of the females.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper investigates Japanese speakers’ acquisition of the mass–count distinction in English. Learners judge whether two large objects/portions of stuff are more than six tiny objects/portions of stuff or vice versa. Results show that learners correctly base judgments on number for count nouns (judging that six small cups are more cups than two large cups) and object-mass nouns (e.g., furniture) and on volume for substance-mass nouns (judging that two large portions of mustard are more mustard than six tiny portions of it). For nouns that can be either mass or count in English (e.g., string(s)) or cross-linguistically (e.g., “spinach”), learners fail to shift judgments according to the mass–count syntax in which the words appear. Results suggest that Japanese learners have difficulty using mass–count syntactic cues to disambiguate the meanings and thus fail to acquire the mass–count distinction in English.

Abstract (sommario):
Copper phyllosilicates-derived catalysts (CuPS-cats) have been intensively explored in the past two decades due to their promising activity in carbonyls hydrogenation. However, CuPS-cats have not been completely reviewed. This paper focuses on the aspects concerning CuPS-cats from synthesis methods, effects of preparation conditions, and dopant to catalytic applications of CuPS-cats. The applications of CuPS-cats include the hydrogenation of carboxylates, carboxylic acids, carbonates, formyls, and CO2 to their respective alcohols. Besides, important factors such as the Cu dispersion, Cu+ and Cu0 surface areas, particles size, interaction between Cu and supports and dopants, morphologies, and spatial effect on catalytic performance of CuPS-cats are discussed. The deactivation and remedial actions to improve the stability of CuPS-cats are summarized. It ends up with the challenges and prospective by using this type of catalyst.

Abstract (sommario):
Upon starvation, Grh1, a peripheral membrane protein located at endoplasmic reticulum (ER) exit sites and early Golgi in Saccharomyces cerevisiae under growth conditions, relocates to a compartment called compartment for unconventional protein secretion (CUPS). Here we report that CUPS lack Golgi enzymes, but contain the coat protein complex II (COPII) vesicle tethering protein Uso1 and the Golgi t-SNARE Sed5. Interestingly, CUPS biogenesis is independent of COPII- and COPI-mediated membrane transport. Pik1- and Sec7-mediated membrane export from the late Golgi is required for complete assembly of CUPS, and Vps34 is needed for their maintenance. CUPS formation is triggered by glucose, but not nitrogen starvation. Moreover, upon return to growth conditions, CUPS are absorbed into the ER, and not the vacuole. Altogether our findings indicate that CUPS are not specialized autophagosomes as suggested previously. We suggest that starvation triggers relocation of secretory and endosomal membranes, but not their enzymes, to generate CUPS to sort and secrete proteins that do not enter, or are not processed by enzymes of the ER–Golgi pathway of secretion.

Abstract (sommario):
Background Rigid and safe transacetabular screw fixation in total hip arthroplasty (THA) is achieved by pursuing deeper bone stock and avoiding injuries to the neurovascular structures, but these efforts can be restricted by the distribution of screw-holes on cups by the manufacturer. We therefore tried to determine: (i) optimal screw-hole positions on cups to allow anatomical placement of screws; (ii) rationality of the basic 3-screw-hole cluster on commercial cups; and (iii) the optimum method for placing commercial cups in accordance with acetabular anatomy. Methods Periacetabular osseous structure of 64 hips and arterial structures of 50 hips were three-dimensionally reconstructed. Simulated transacetabular screw fixation during THA was performed in these hips with 3 different screw lengths (15, 25, and 35 mm) to define deeper and safer screw trajectories. Screw-hole locations of 7 commercially available cups were measured and matched with the periacetabular anatomy. Results When the cup was placed into the acetabulum at 45° of abduction and 20° of anteversion, the optimal locations of 2 screw-holes on the cups were at 30° and 64° of latitude, with a 35° separation angle. The inversetriangle distribution pattern was safer than the triangle pattern in basic 3-screw-hole-cluster cups. When placing the commercial cups, 5°-10° of anterior rotation can be added to allow better screw trajectories. Conclusions Our study determined optimal screw-hole positions and their distribution pattern on cups. We describe methods to place the commercial cups that are not designed according to acetabular anatomy.

Abstract (sommario):
Fifty-three retrieved hydroxyapatite (HA)-coated acetabular cups were studied with scanning electron microscope (SEM) for identification of the residual HA. Image processing technique was applied for quantification of the residual HA as percentage of the cup surface. The study included 28 Landos Atoll, 21 Osteonic Omnifit and 4 Howmedica ABG cups. These cups were retrieved at an average of 59.1 (13–107) months after implantation due to aseptic loosening in 24, septic loosening in 14, infection without loosening in 7, polyethylene wear in 7 and osteolysis in 1 cup. The relationships of residual HA to original coating thickness, failure mode, duration in the host and other factors were studied with Pearson's correlation, linear regression and ANOVA tests for its statistical significance. The residual HA is negatively correlated with the duration in the host (r = -0.375, p < 0.01 for all cups, r = -0.732, p < 0.001 for loose Atoll cups and r = -0.592, p < 0.01 for the loose Omnifit cups). The thicker coating (155 um, Atoll) had more residual HA than the thinner (50 um, Omnifit) coating (p < 0.001). The loose cups had less residual HA than the stable cups (p < 0.001). The loss of HA coating during the first 2 years averages 52% and 22% for the loose and stable Atoll cups, respectively. Thereafter, HA coating disappears at a rate of 7.4 ± 2.6% and 3.8 ± 1.8% per year. And the loss of HA surface from the Omnifit and ABG cups during the first 2 years averages 69% and 42% for the loose and stable cups, respectively. Then the following loss rates are 10.1 ± 3.8% and 7.1 ± 2.9% of surface per year, respectively. The HA coating is resorbed in the host. The resorption rate is higher on the loose cups than on the stable cups. A hemispherical smooth surfaced cup depends solely on screws for resistance of rotational torque after HA resorption. Clinical loosening and migration of the cup then follow screw loosening or failure. The design of HA-coated acetabular cup should avoid smooth surfaced hemispheric metal shell without a more dependable fixation than screws.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper, local-thickened plates are adopted for aluminum alloy square cups stamping with relatively low values of residual stresses and small radius at the bottom corner. By utilizing numerical and experimental methods, the effects of process parameters and plate local thickening on the residual stress distribution of hot stamped aluminum alloy square cups are studied. Furthermore, the influence of plate local thickening on the radius of bottom corner of square cups is also investigated. The results showed that with an increase in the forming temperature, blank holder force and die corner radius, residual stresses in hot stamped square cups can be reduced. The same effect can be achieved by decreasing the die entrance radius. As opposed to the flat plates, using local-thickened plates can not only reduce the residual stresses values in hot stamped square cups, but also decrease the radius at the bottom corner of square cups. When the optimized thickening scheme of plate is used, the smaller radius at the bottom corner, the lower residual stresses in the square cups are obtained.

Abstract (sommario):
Paper cups are ubiquitous in daily life for serving water, soup, coffee, tea, and milk due to their convenience, biodegradability, recyclability, and sustainability. The thermal insulation performance of paper cups is of significance because they are used to supply hot food or drinks. Using an effective thermal conductivity to accurately evaluate the thermal insulation performance of paper cups is complex due to the inclusion of complicated components and a multilayer structure. Moreover, an effective thermal conductivity is unsuitable for evaluating thermal insulation performance of paper cups in the case of fluctuating temperature. In this work, we propose a facile approach to precisely analyze the thermal insulation performance of paper cups in a particular range of temperature by using an evaluation model based on the MISO (Multiple-Input Single-Output) technical theory, which includes a characterization parameter (temperature factor) and a measurement apparatus. A series of experiments was conducted according to this evaluation model, and the results show that this evaluation model enables accurate characterization of the thermal insulation performance of paper cups and provides an efficient theoretical basis for selecting paper materials for paper cups.

Abstract (sommario):
This article provides an overview of the development of palmette cups from ancient Tanagra. Also known as floral cups, these formed the predominant type of decorated pottery in Boeotia and neighbouring areas during the Classical period. Production of these cups – which were decorated with simple floral motifs (mostly palmettes) in silhouette technique – peaked towards the end of the fifth and in the early fourth century bc. This study is based on a catalogue of 74 cups of unknown context in the apotheke of the Schimatari Museum, with reference to other material from excavations and collections, thus providing the most comprehensive body of palmette vases known from Tanagra or any other production centre. With a focus on vase shape and decoration, several groups or workshops are identified. The picture that is built up contributes to a better understanding of the diversity and development of this type of pottery, and offers an insight into the ceramic traditions of Boeotia in general.
