Abstract When the Surf Life Saving Association of Australia (SLSAA) invited American and Hawaiian lifeguards to compete at an international surf lifesaving carnival at Torquay, Victoria, in November of 1956, it did not foresee the far-reaching consequences of the tour. Noting that historians of the beach, and surfing in particular, frequently refer to the epochal significance of 1956, the paper utilizes predominantly surf lifesaving sources to explore the circumstances culminating in the month-long visit, discusses the appearance of Malibu boards, and then analyzes the consequences for Australian surf lifesaving in particular. The great irony of 1956 was that by welcoming the Americans and Hawaiians the SLSAA weakened its previous control over the beaches, as Australians found new ways to enjoy the surf.

The social media app Instagram has become a popular everyday way to share visual representations of surfing culture and experiences. Providing an alternative to mainstream surf media, images posted on Instagram by women who surf recreationally both disrupt and reinforce the existing sexualisation and differentiation of women in surf culture. Images themselves are not necessarily resistant, yet women are asserting themselves as a voice of surf cultural authority through processes of posting, sharing and engaging with images. While ‘big data’ research about Instagram is proving useful in terms of mapping spaces and movements, this article adopts an ethnographic approach to explore the notion that social media developments are changing possible ways of knowing and representing the world in which we live. Also considered is how lived experiences and social media shape each other in everyday lives and communities.

This article examines the local practices, histories, and transnational circulation and exchange of gender ideologies within Japanese surfscapes. A focus on gender in relation to Japanese surf culture is critical as the ways surf spaces in Japan are governed and/or have changed in recent years has as much to do with transnational gender surf ideologies as with its domestic gender norms. More specifically, we examine how gendered ideologies in Japan are mobilized in particular ways depending on the conditions of possibility—the cultural, social, geographical, historical, and networked elements—that comprise any given surfscape. To draw attention to the complexities involved in the relationship between space, place, and gender in Japan, the enquiry is undertaken in a highly localized, territorial, and big-wave surf site in Wakayama Prefecture and surrounding Kansai region. This site has been chosen because of how it localizes a unique mode of trans-Pacific surf culture, thereby offering insight into the nuances, issues, and strategies of social change as surfing continues to evolve in the region. The aim of the analysis is twofold. The first is contextual, highlighting the importance of the culturally and site-specific character of how surf culture and gender relations are assembled in the Japanese context. The second is to offer insight into the specific histories and transnational relationships informing the gendered practices of surfing in Japan today. The intention is to highlight the diversity of surf cultures throughout East Asia and the different ways surfing lifestyles are localized in relation to socio-political-ecological place-making and gender.

Skateboarding is an important part of 21st century culture and has considerable cultural, financial and entertainment value, as indicated by its recent incorporation in the Tokyo Olympics. It is practiced on human-made surfaces such as pavements and roads as well as on wooden ramps and within asphalt and concrete skateparks. Hundreds of examples of the latter were built worldwide during the skateboarding’s ‘Second Wave’ in the late 1970s–early 1980s, but nearly all were subsequently closed, infilled or destroyed. Very few original concrete parks of this key period survive and many are currently threatened with destruction. The historic status recently ascribed to two well preserved examples in the UK and Australia underlines a need to assess the heritage value of the other remaining original skateparks, as well as to consider possible strategies for their protection and conservation. The present article tackles this topic using selected examples of these unconventional historic structures from around the world.

Abstract Patches formed by dense accumulations of diatoms in the surf zone (surf diatoms) are common on sandy beaches with intermediate to dissipative morphodynamic states. Their appearances are correlated with environmental factors such as the passage of cold fronts when onshore winds increase beach hydrodynamics, resuspending epibenthic stocks and accumulating them through the inner surf zone. In Santa Catarina state, Southern Brazil, two beaches are known to have frequent occurrence of accumulations of the surf diatom Asterionellopsis glacialis sensu lato: Rincão Beach (28°50' S) and Navegantes Beach (26°52' S). The high biomass of this alga and its central importance in the trophic structure of the coastal ecosystems suggest studies about its potential applications. In the present study, strains of A. glacialis were isolated, cultured under different conditions and evaluated for ecophysiological aspects: growth rate under different conditions, potential biological activities of exudates, biomass and lipid content, and fatty acid profile. A. glacialis cells in culture showed deformation, which were ameliorated by using agitation and silicon and phosphorus enriched culture media. Exudates of the strains showed no allelopathic effects, although previous studies have indicated activity. Lipid content showed variation depending on the strain and culture media. Values ranged from 9% to 13.6% by dry weight. In all strains saturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids were identified. Some hypotheses were proposed to explain the variation of the lipid contents, fatty acid profiles and physiological features between strains of the same species. We believe that the fatty acids profile of this primary producer has important consequences in the sandy beach ecology.

La culture surf qui a tant marqué la côte ouest américaine à partir des années 1950, culture qui s’est mondialisée et commercialisée avec plusieurs tendances toutes aussi variées et inusitées les unes que les autres, a créé un univers aux proportions imposantes dans les dix dernières années. L’industrie du divertissement, du sport et du loisir est au centre de cette révolution, mais aussi celle du vêtement, de la mode et d’autres produits dérivés. Plus significatif encore, le surf original a influencé plusieurs pratiques sportives tant sur l’eau que sur terre ou sur neige, et désormais les intervenants touristiques de même que ceux en aménagement du territoire doivent s’adapter et composer avec ces nouvelles réalités. L’article dressera un panorama de cette constellation d’activités, qui ont le surf comme point de départ, et de leurs évolutions récentes. Puis, plus spécifiquement, il sera question des impacts de ces activités sur l’espace urbain à travers des modes d’appropriation de territoires en apparence plutôt inadaptés aux « sports de glisse ».

Firmicutes is almost a ubiquitous phylum. Several genera of this group, for instance, Geobacillus, are recognized for decomposing plant organic matter and for producing thermostable ligninolytic enzymes. Amplicon sequencing was used in this study to determine the prevalence and genetic diversity of the Firmicutes in two distinctly related environmental samples—South Dakota Landfill Compost (SDLC, 60 °C), and Sanford Underground Research Facility sediments (SURF, 45 °C). Although distinct microbial community compositions were observed, there was a dominance of Firmicutes in both the SDLC and SURF samples, followed by Proteobacteria. The abundant classes of bacteria in the SDLC site, within the phylum Firmicutes, were Bacilli (83.2%), and Clostridia (2.9%). In comparison, the sample from the SURF mine was dominated by the Clostridia (45.8%) and then Bacilli (20.1%). Within the class Bacilli, the SDLC sample had more diversity (a total of 11 genera with more than 1% operational taxonomic unit, OTU). On the other hand, SURF samples had just three genera, about 1% of the total population: Bacilli, Paenibacillus, and Solibacillus. With specific regard to Geobacillus, it was found to be present at a level of 0.07% and 2.5% in SURF and SDLC, respectively. Subsequently, culture isolations of endospore-forming Firmicutes members from these samples led to the isolation of a total of 117 isolates. According to colony morphologies, and identification based upon 16S rRNA and gyrB gene sequence analysis, we obtained 58 taxonomically distinct strains. Depending on the similarity indexes, a gyrB sequence comparison appeared more useful than 16S rRNA sequence analysis for inferring intra- and some intergeneric relationships between the isolates.

Fascinés dans leur jeunesse par ces hommes venus d’outre-Atlantique qui jouent avec les vagues et apportent avec eux un style de vie nouveau et libéré, deux hommes décident de créer un magazine français de surf en mars 1986. Le surf est alors en pleine expansion : les marques de surfwear s’établissent le long de la côte aquitaine, les compétitions internationales et nationales se multiplient tout autant que les clubs, dont le magazine accompagne la création.Vecteur privilégié d’une culture surfique, ce média est ici considéré et interrogé comme une archive. Une analyse sémiologique des contenus des numéros qui le composent sur une période de trente-huit ans permet alors de mettre au jour une vision homérique de la pratique, convoquant des mythes anciens pour en créer des nouveaux et contribuant par là-même à inscrire la pratique dans la psyché collective à travers des imaginaires que ce travail propose de déconstruire et de questionner
Although surfing officially made its debut in France in 1956 on the Basque coast, its culture was not put into narrative form and disseminated by the media until 1986, when the first French surfing magazine, Surf Session, was created. Fascinated in their youth by these men from across the Atlantic who played with the waves and brought with them a new, liberated lifestyle, two men decided to create a French surfing magazine in March 1986. Surfing was booming at the time: surfwear brands were establishing themselves along the Aquitaine coast, national and international competitions were multiplying, as were clubs, whose development the magazine supported.As a privileged vector of surfing culture, this medium is both an archive and a means of promoting a new, sometimes counter-cultural sport and its social activities. A semio-historical analysis of the statements and visibilities contained in the issues over a period of thirty-eight years brings to light a Homeric vision of the practice in the form of an epic, first Illiadesque, then Odyssean, summoning ancient symbols and myths to create new ones. It contributes to inscribing the sport in the collective psyche through representations which this work proposes to deconstrcut by questioning its

This thesis is an ethnographic exploration of gender experiences in a New Zealand surf culture. I employed the methods of participant observation, semi-structured interviews and focus groups to accumulate in-depth and descriptive qualitative data from the men and women who surf in the community of Raglan. I was especially interested in the rules surrounding the act of lining up - a systematic etiquette used to queue for waves. I inquired about surfers' struggles when lining up to deepen my understanding of the cultural behaviour of surfing and to help reveal implicit rules underpinning surf etiquette. As a female surfer, I was especially interested to understand the gender-relations between men and women in the waters in which I participated in. I discovered that subtle rules pertain to different groups of surfers and group emerged based on 'other' surfer characteristics. Although gender surfaced as a characteristic way of sorting surfers into groups, gender did not stand out more critical than others revealed throughout the research process. What was evident throughout the research was that men and women experience more commonalities in their surfing experiences than differences. Therefore, this research shows how the waves become a contested spaces for surfers and how surf culture serves as a site for resistance to gendered identities in contemporary Western society.

A new model for examining iconic works in creative popular culture was developed, generating comparative insights into how the iconic film Morning Of The Earth (1972) functions as a medium, first by re-recording the original soundtrack using emerging local talent, then by asking the same artists to re-imagine the soundtrack and compose new material for the film. Informed by historical connection to the original film, artistic direction of these projects enabled exploration of how Morning Of The Earth's influence inspired these artists' reworking and responding to the original soundtrack by comparing the film's overall position in Australian popular culture.

Questa tesi è un’analisi etnografica del surf e della “cultura sportiva” che esso alimenta nella regione/città della Gold Coast, all’estremità sud-orientale dello Stato del Queensland, in Australia. In questa area turistica dal clima mite e costantemente battuta dalle onde, infatti, il surf ha trovato un’accoglienza particolare, ed è diventato parte integrante del paesaggio, segnando l’identità del luogo e contribuendo a definirne il patrimonio. In questo processo, nella «surfing culture» della Gold Coast hanno trovato espressione istanze locali così come questioni di più ampio respiro, come il rapporto col mare e con la spiaggia che in Australia ha storicamente assunto una rilevanza sociale particolare, un’idea di identità nazionale fondata su moderatamente aggiornati principi coloniali e la co-costruzione delle categorie e degli attributi di genere (e in particolare di quelli legati alla mascolinità). A partire da una concezione delle pratiche sportive come “passioni ordinarie” e come “pratiche di consumo”, vale a dire come attività cui ci si dedica per vocazione e che danno di conseguenza vita a un sistema di senso entro il quale i nostri gesti prendono valore, ho ripercorso le traiettorie culturali secondo le quali il surf diventa qui particolarmente significativo per i suoi praticanti. La tesi si divide in sette Capitoli. Nel Capitolo 1 si è cercato di offrire una panoramica critica introduttiva sulla letteratura esistente sul surf. Nel Capitolo 2 ho cercato di proporre una visione comprensiva del surf in quanto disciplina ibrida, che non può essere ridotta, se vogliamo renderne conto, a una sola delle categorie epistemologiche attraverso cui simili attività sono state lette, come quelle di “sport”, di “gioco”, di “danza”, di “performance”, eccetera. Nel Capitolo 3 vengono trattate le metodologie adottate e cerco di riflettere criticamente sul mio posizionamento sul terreno. Il Capitolo 4 e il Capitolo 5 analizzano le modalità socialmente e culturalmente orientate secondo le quali in Australia, e sulla Gold Coast in particolare, si sono storicamente costituiti peculiari “modelli di apprezzamento” del mare e della spiaggia, che contribuiscano a orientare l’esperienza dei surfisti. Nel Capitolo 6 vengono descritti i modi e le strategie attraverso i quali il surfista in Australia è diventato una sorta di incarnazione contemporanea dell’eroe romantico, nonché, allo stesso tempo, un’espressione emblematica di alcune delle caratteristiche associate con l’idea di un “carattere” e di un’identità “tipicamente” australiani. Il Capitolo 7, infine, cerca di chiarire come di fatto questa associazione tra surf e “australianità” dia vita, soprattutto sulla Gold Coast, a una cultura sportiva prevalentemente maschile e quasi esclusivamente bianca, organizzata attorno a due principi fondamentali: quello della reciprocità (nei confronti delle onde e dell’oceano), e quello della competizione con gli altri surfisti per stabilire la priorità e l’ordine di avvicendamento sui picchi.
This thesis is an ethnographic analysis of surfing and the surfing culture on Australia’s Gold Coast (Queensland, Australia). In such a touristic region, the mild climate, warm water and the quantity and quality of waves have attracted many surfers, that have created a real surfing legacy. Surfing here contributes to shape the landscape and has become an integral part of the cultural heritage and of a socially constructed idea of “a life in the Gold Coast style”. Therefore, in the process of definition of the local surfing culture, both local and more wide questions are involved. Firstly, the particular relation with the beach and the ocean Australian people have historically developed deeply influence the way surfers enjoy riding the waves. Secondly, an “imagined” sense of Australian-ness rooted on the colonial history of the country is reflected and reproduced in the local surfing environment. Finally, surfing actively participate to the co-construction of the gender categories and attributes (especially those linked to masculinity). In this thesis, surfing is conceived as an “ordinary passion” into which practitioners invest their time and resources in order to give a deeper meaning to their lives. As happens to the consumption practices which are based on a free individual choice, surfing reflects the “character” and values of those who show their commitment to it. In this way, it constitutes a cultural “frame” in which the surfers’ gestures make sense. The thesis is divided in 7 chapters. Chapter 1 is a critical review of the existent scientific literature on surfing. In Chapter 2, surfing is conceived as a hybrid bodily practice that cross the boundaries between “sport” and “game”, “sport” and “performance”, “sport” and “dance”, and so on. Chapter 3 is about the methodologies adopted for this research. Moreover, a broader reflection on reflectivity and the body in the ethnographic study of sporting activities is proposed. The socially and culturally ways through which in Australia and on the Gold Coast particular “modality of enjoyment” of the beach and the sea have been historically produced are investigated in Chapter 4 and 5, that also describe the way these modes of appreciation inform surfing culture on the Gold Coast. In Chapter 6, a view of the surfer as an athletic, contemporary version of the “romantic hero” is discussed. On the Gold Coast, this image also epitomizes some of the main features attached to the Australian “character” and identity. Chapter 7 describes how this reciprocal relationship between the surfers’ image and an idealized Australian identity has built a mainly manly and white sporting culture, organized around two ambivalent but coherent principles of social relations: on the one hand, the reciprocity between the surfer and the ocean that offers him so much “fun”; and, on the other hand, the competition among surfers to establish the priority on the line-up (that is, to establish who has the right to enjoy that reciprocity with the sea and who is instead excluded from it).

The exegesis, ‘The voices of surf-writing’, examines: the relationship between reader and writer in the surf-writing genre; how this relationship is conveyed through voice; and, ultimately, how the delivery methods of surf-journalism, surf-nonfiction and surf-fiction influence the social perception of surf culture in the mass market. Acknowledging that surf-writing is mainly aimed at surfers and those who ‘belong to surf’, the exegesis focusses on the ways surf is delivered in texts, and examines whether the writing is authentic in its themes, tones and voice, while also calling for innovation. The exegesis accompanies a creative work, Taj: A man above the reef, which offers a unique contribution to the future of surf-writing by presenting Taj Burrow’s retirement tale in a new literary format and delivering knowledge earned through industry experience, culture exposure and academic exploration. This piece of creative nonfiction utilises fragments, visuals and breakout boxes to portray a variety of voices operating in the surf culture. Surfing has existed for centuries, as histories of the Pacific recognise. The aim of this submission is to represent surfing authentically, innovatively and with integrity in all aspects of the surf-writing field, while also recommending change to the subgenres and culture of the surf writing industry.

Pratiquer le surf, pour certains, est constitutif de leur identité au sein des mondes contemporains. Surfer et surtout devenir surfeur s'acquiert par une transmission traditionnelle, en dehors des normes fédérales. Être surfeur, c'est un mode de vie particulier, dans les interactions avec les autres pratiquants, dans l'usage avec la nature, dans le rapport au corps, mais aussi dans les questions de masculinité et de féminité. Ce monde singulier, avec une histoire stigmatisante dans certains de ses aspects, est désigné par le reste de la société. Le surf, qui oscille entre le jeu et le sport, par son irrespect des normes et des valeurs dominantes, peut être une réponse aux crises sociales contemporaines. C'est à travers ces failles de la société que s'est infiltré un rapport au monde spécifique des surfeurs : cette culture surfique, qui, dés lors, est considérée comme déviante par le reste de la société

To surf, and especially to become a surfer, is acquired through a traditional transmission, far from federal norms. Being a surfer means a different way of life, which shows in the interaction with other surfers, the use of nature , the outlook on the body as well as in the male/female relations. This particular environment, with its stigmatising aspects, is singled out by the rest of society. Surf practice, which oscilates between game and sport, might be an answer to the contemporary social crisis through its non-respect of rules and values. And it is through these social gaps that the relation to the surfer's world has filtered : this surfing culture which is therefore considered as deviant by the rest of society

The primary purpose of this ethnographic study is to contextualize Mexican American surfers experiences with sport as a lens into race, gender and class relations. Specifically, it seeks to understand how a history of gender, race, and class oppression has played out in this understudied terrain of sports. This study offers empirical insight into the ways in which Mexican Americans navigate and (un)successfully infiltrate predominantly white, male, middle-class sporting arenas. In this study I also examine the relationship between access and barriers, specifically how access to public recreational spaces are constricted by participants’ real and imagined barriers. By exploring Mexican American surfers’ everyday experiences, I unearthed the varying ways Mexican American surfers experienced discrimination and marginalization across intersecting and interlocking identities.

Être surfeur, c'est un mode de vie particulier, dans les interactions avec les autres pratiquants, dans l'usage avec la nature, dans le rapport au corps, mais aussi dans les questions de masculinité et de féminité. Ce monde singulier, avec une histoire stigmatisante dans certains de ses aspects, est désigné par le reste de la société. Le surf, qui oscille entre le jeu et le sport, par son irrespect des normes et des valeurs dominantes, peut être une réponse aux crises sociales contemporaines. C'est à travers ces failles de la société que s'est infiltré un rapport au monde spécifique des surfeurs : cette culture surfique, qui, dès lors, est considérée comme déviante par le reste de la société.

Mat, språk och kultur är tätt sammanlänkade, och i matlagningsprogram förekommer en rad olika sorters kulturspecifika referenser. Kulturspecifika referenser definieras som ”any reference to a cultural entity which, due to its distance from the target culture, is characterized by a sufficient degree of opacity for the target reader to constitute a problem” (Mailhac i Ranzato 2015:54) och kan vara sådant t.ex. som måttenheter (pint), märken (Tabasco) och maträtter (surf and turf). Denna undersöknings fokus är översättningen av kulturspecifika referenser i matlagningsprogram, och eftersom merparten av de matlagningsprogram som översätts för svensk tv är på engelska består denna studies material av 21 engelskspråkiga matlagningsprogram och deras svenska översättningar. De matlagningsprogram som undersökts är Det goda livet, Jamie Olivers smarta rätter, David Roccos ljuva matresa – Italien, Kitchen Hero och Hela England bakar. Genom att att konstruera en korpus och analysera de kulturspecifika referenserna har normerna för översättningsstrategier gällande kulturspecifika referenser i matlagningsprogram kartlagts, och jämförts med resultaten från Pedersens välkända undersökning av primetime-TV (2011). Resultaten kategoriserades sedan enligt Pedersens taxonomi. Resultaten visade att normerna för matlagningsprogram liknade dem för primetime-TV, trots att det fanns ett par domänspecifika skillnader. Eftersom språk formar hur vi ser världen är det intressant att se hur kulturspecifika referenser översätts från en kultur till en annan, eftersom det formar hur den kulturen ses och värderas, eller åtminstone dess matkultur.
Food, language and culture are closely linked and cooking shows are peppered with culturally specific references. Culturally specific references are defined as “any reference to a cultural entity which, due to its distance from the target culture, is characterized by a sufficient degree of opacity for the target reader to constitute a problem” (Mailhac in Ranzato 2015:54) and can be things such as measurements (pints), brands (Tabasco), and dishes (surf and turf) to name a few. This study focuses on the translation of culture specific references in cooking shows. Since most of the cooking shows translated into Swedish are in English, the material for this study consists of 21 cooking shows in English and their Swedish translations. This study will look at the shows 3 good things, Save with Jamie, David Rocco’s Dolce Vita, Kitchen Hero and The Great British Bake off. By constructing a corpus and analyzing the culturally specific references, the norms regarding translation strategies for the translation of culturally specific references in cooking shows have been mapped out, and compared to the results of a well known study on primetime TV by Pedersen (2011). These were categorized in accordance with Pedersen’s taxonomy (2011:76). The results showed that the norms were very similar to those of primetime TV, with the exception of some domain-specific norms. Language influences how we see the world. Thus, the way culturally specific references are translated from one culture into another is important because it affects how cultures are viewed and interpreted, at least within the food community.

Romania is a country that boasts a rich and diverse gastronomic culture, making it a must-visit destination for food lovers and culinary enthusiasts. From traditional dishes passed down through generations to modern interpretations of classic recipes [1], Romanian cuisine offers a unique and flavorful experience that is sure to tantalize the taste buds of even the most discerning travelers. One of the best ways to experience Romanian gastronomic culture is through culinary tourism, a growing trend that allows visitors to immerse themselves in the local food scene and learn about the history and traditions behind each dish [4,6]. From bustling food markets to cozy family-run restaurants, there are countless opportunities to sample the best that Romania has to offer [7]. Romanian gastronomic heritage is a rich tapestry of flavors and ingredients that have been passed down through generations. From hearty stews and soups to sweet pastries and tasty cheeses, Romanian cuisine is a reflection of the country�s diverse culture and history [2,8]. However, like many countries, Romania has seen changes in its gastronomic products over time, influenced by factors such as globalization, urbanization, and changing consumer preferences. One of the most significant changes in Romanian traditional gastronomic products has been the introduction of new ingredients and flavors from other countries. For example, Italian pasta dishes and French pastries have become more common in Romanian cuisine, reflecting the influence of European culinary trends [3]. The main contribution of this study, despite these changes, is to prove that there is still a strong appreciation for traditional Romanian gastronomic products, and efforts are being made to preserve and promote them. Many regions of Romania have culinary festivals and events that celebrate traditional dishes and ingredients, and there is a growing interest in organic and locallysourced food products.

Le thème de la division culturelle séparant les sciences et les « humanités » demeure encore très présent dans les esprits. Il structure tant les conceptions dominantes de la culture que celles de l’éducation. Pourtant, les lignes de partage entre ces deux domaines – tout particulièrement entre les arts et les sciences – bougent et connaissent des infléchissements significatifs. Le mot d’ordre de Lévy-Leblond dans les années 1980, « mettre la science en culture », revêt lui-même de nouveaux sens, dès lors que la séparation est assumée et surmontée. Sur cette base, les expériences réunissant dans un même projet culturel l’artiste et le scientifique se développent. L’activité artistique et l’activité scientifique trouvent même un sol commun dans la conception de l’expérience esthétique héritée de l’œuvre du philosophe John Dewey.

We studied for the first time luminescence characteristics of the some micromycetes, isolated from the bottom sediments of the Black sea from the 27 m depth. Luminescence parameters were registered at laboratory complex “Svet” using mechanical and chemical stimulations. Fungi cultures of genera Acremonium, Aspergillus, Penicillium were isolated on ChDA medium which served as control. Culture of Penicillium commune gave no light emission with any kind of stimulation. Culture of Acremonium sp. has shown luminescence in the blue – green field of spectrum. Using chemical stimulation by fresh water we registered signals with luminescence energy (to 3.24 ± 0.11)•108 quantum•cm2 and duration up to 4.42 s, which 3 times exceeded analogous magnitudes in a group, stimulated by sea water (p < 0.05). Under chemical stimulation by ethyl alcohol fungi culture luminescence was not observed. Culture of Aspergillus fumigatus possessed the most expressed properties of luminescence. Stimulation by fresh water culture emission with energy of (3.35 ± 0.11)•108 quantum•cm2 and duration up to 4.96 s. Action of ethyl alcohol to culture also stimulated signals, but intensity of light emission was 3–4 times lower than under mechanical stimulation. For sure the given studies will permit not only to evaluate contribution of marine fungi into general bioluminescence of the sea, but as well to determine places of accumulation of opportunistic species in the sea.

The Matta Sur neighbourhood in Santiago acquired official protection for its heritage value in 2016. It is the largest protected area in the city and one of the few in which vernacular architecture, local lifestyles and community networks withstand the city's rapid urban development. It has a regular urban structure of wide streets framed by continuous facades, which predominantly belong to one-storey homes, organised around a central courtyard. They are built combining burnt or raw masonry and wood and earth traditional building systems, which are now discontinued and often misunderstood, leading to poor interventions which deteriorate the quality of buildings and liveable spaces. The Heritage and Community Centre Project attends the need for comprehensive interventions to approach appropriate conservation of Matta Sur under these circumstances. This project aims, on one hand, to provide a suitable community space within the neighbourhood and, on the other, to set an example for appropriate intervention, management and maintenance of the vernacular constructions in the neighbourhood. All of the process is developed through community-based design and intervention, attending to the role of community organisations in Chile, which have been traditionally responsible for filling the gap between public policies and community wellbeing, particularly in urban contexts, through strong solidarity networks. Through a process of co-design and co-management, the project aims to refurbish a traditional house of the neighbourhood into a community centre in which various community initiatives converge and which allows for these solidarity networks to keep functioning in a contemporary context.

La culture numérique est une culture écrite. La production de textes numériques repose sur l'utilisation d'un système d'écriture qui possède ses propres signes et ses propres règles, le code de programmation, ainsi que sur des dispositifs de communication prédisposant cette pratique. Plus particulièrement, si l'on s'intéresse aux écrits linguistiques, on peut identifier différentes phases de développement (web 1.0, web 2.0, web 3.0) qui dépendent des avancées technologiques des dispositifs de production et de réception ainsi que des dynamiques de circulation des écrits (lecture, production, coproduction, partage et référencement d’écrits linguistiques numériques). Dans cet article nous proposerons une brève histoire de la textualité linguistique numérique, ainsi qu’une réflexion critique sur les enjeux sémiotiques des transitions entre les différentes étapes de cette histoire.

Color has always been an important component of a person's perception of the overall picture � this applies to art, religion, and individual worldviews. In different epochs and cultures, different, but always important meanings were conveyed with color, certain colors were associated with what was most significant and valuable for a people or a representative of a religious tradition. The blue color is exceptional in this sense � for a long time it was not paid attention at all, but once appearing on the canvases of Renaissance artists, it spread its influence on the culture, art, and social life of Europe. In this study, we will determine the significance of the blue color in various world cultures that preceded the Renaissance, to make sure that it reaches its culmination point at this time. We pay special attention to the great Italian painter and architect Raffaello Santi, whose works have become synonymous with beauty, harmony, grace, and perfection in art. In the colors of Raffaello, stories, feelings, relationships of characters are hidden, they contain the secret of harmony, sublimity, and uniqueness of his canvases. This work offers a look at Raffaello�s work through these paints, their colors, and shades, which, combined with the unique style and innate talent of the artist, have become the embodiment of the image of beauty that all philosophers have been talking about for many thousands of years.

La diversité fait partie intégrante de la Suisse: 26 cantons, 4 langues nationales et une multitude de cultures et de modes de vie coexistent et se côtoient. Mais à quel point l’environnement social de la population en Suisse est-il varié et panaché? Pour répondre à cette question, le Pour-cent culturel Migros a chargé l’Institut Gottlieb Duttweiler (GDI) de réaliser une étude représentative. Les caractéristiques analysées reposent sur l’article 8 de la Constitution fédérale relatif à l’égalité des droits et à la non-discrimination: l’origine, le sexe, l’âge, la langue, la situation sociale, le mode de vie, les convictions religieuses, philosophiques et politiques ainsi que les handicaps physiques, mentaux ou psychiques. Âge, formation et finances: des sujets qui divisent la population Les résultats de l’enquête dans toutes les régions du pays montrent à quel point les cercles de connaissances sont dépourvus de mixité et de diversité. Les personnes ayant des niveaux d’éducation différents ont peu de points de contact. Parmi les personnes fortunées, bien plus de la moitié n’ont pas ou peu de contacts avec des personnes modestes. Ce manque de mixité se retrouve également dans les tranches d’âge. Quant à la diversité des convictions politiques au sein du cercle de connaissances, elle est minime. De plus, la majorité des personnes vivant en Suisse n’a aucun contact avec d’autres cultures. La Suisse manque d’opportunités de rencontre La raison du manque de contact entre les groupes de population est le manque de points communs et l’absence d’opportunités de rencontre. En moyenne, 58,2 % des personnes interrogées sont d’accord pour dire que certaines activités telles que l’adhésion à une association, des cours, un engagement sociétal, des événements culturels ou des activités de loisirs ont permis de diversifier leur cercle de connaissances. La population suisse souhaite plus de diversité Les personnes qui sont plus souvent en contact avec différents groupes ont une attitude plus positive envers ces groupes. Selon l’enquête, 56% des participant-es pensent, du moins en partie, qu’une communauté peut supporter de grandes différences, par analogie avec les groupes interrogés. De plus, 69% estiment que la diversité des perspectives et des expériences de vie permet de prendre de meilleures décisions.

Geelong and the Surf Coast are treated here as one entity although there are marked differences between the two communities. Sitting on the home of the Wathaurong Aboriginal group, this G21 region is geographically diverse. Geelong serviced a wool industry on its western plains, while manufacturing and its seaport past has left it as a post-industrial city. The Surf Coast has benefitted from the sea change phenomenon. Both communities have fast growing populations and have benefitted from their proximity to Melbourne. They are deeply integrated with this major urban centre. The early establishment of digital infrastructure proved an advantage to certain sectors. All creative industries are represented well in Geelong while many creatives in Torquay are embedded in the high profile and economically dominant surfing industry. The Geelong community is serviced well by its own creative industries with well-established advertising firms, architects, bookshops, gaming arcades, movie houses, music venues, newspaper headquarters, brand new and iconic performing and visual arts centres, libraries and museums, television and radio all accessible in its refurbished downtown area. Co-working spaces, collective practices and entrepreneurial activity are evident throughout the region.

The Gold Coast has one of the strongest and most resilient city brands in Australia. Monikers such as the ‘glitter strip’, ‘Sin City’, ‘Australia’s playground’ and ‘famous for fun’ have variously been applied to brand the Gold Coast, with its identity long touted as revolving around ‘sun, surf and sand’. Belinda McKay (2005, p. 68) observes that the Gold Coast is often seen as a place to escape to, ‘where new possibilities can be imagined and enacted’: this sense of escape from the ordinary remains a strong element of the Gold Coast’s place identity.

El aumento en la concentración de gases de efecto invernadero (GEI) en la atmósfera está relacionado con el uso agrícola del suelo, que ha sido responsable, al menos en parte, del calentamiento global. Se realizaron dos estudios en experimentos a largo plazo (24 y 26 años) con labranza cero y sin adición de N mineral en un Acrisol, y cuyo objetivo es evaluar el efecto del manejo del suelo que incluye leguminosas y pastos con maíz en sucesión [avena / maíz (O / M), veza / maíz (V / M), avena + veza / maíz (O + V / M), avena + veza / maíz + caupí (O + V / M + C) y lablab + maíz (LL + M)], sobre las emisiones de GEI en el sur de Brasil.

Depuis un demi-siècle, la paternité a connu une évolution radicale, d’un océan à l’autre, suivant l’adaptation progressive des hommes en réaction au cadre socioéconomique, culturel et contextuel. Au cours de cette période, les hommes ont entretenu des rapports changeants avec le monde du travail en cherchant à assumer leurs rôles multiples à la maison et à l’extérieur. Leur réalité s’est modulée en fonction de nombreux facteurs, notamment les normes et les attentes culturelles, la situation familiale, l’incapacité, diverses tendances démographiques, sans oublier la participation accrue des femmes au marché du travail. Dans bien des cas, les pères des générations précédentes se limitaient au rôle « traditionnel » de pourvoyeur. En contrepartie, les pères modernes sont plus enclins à assumer diverses responsabilités liées aux soins ou à la gestion des tâches ménagères. Ce faisant, les papas de toutes les régions du Canada contribuent à redéfinir et à remodeler les liens entre le travail et la paternité.

Le vieillissement de la population canadienne s’accélère et les aînés occupent une proportion démographique de plus en plus importante. Malgré les défis sur le plan sociétal, cette situation contribue par ailleurs à multiplier les possibilités en matière de relations intergénérationnelles, puisque les jeunes sont plus susceptibles de côtoyer des aînés. Le vieillissement de la population affecte non seulement les liens familiaux, mais aussi le paysage socioéconomique, culturel et contextuel où les familles évoluent. À partir des plus récentes statistiques du Recensement de 2016, le document Coup d’œil sur le vieillissement de la population et les relations intergénérationnelles au Canada adopte une perspective familiale en jetant un regard sur l’horizon démographique évolutif au pays. Comme en témoignent ces données, le vieillissement de la population s’intensifie et la durée de vie au-delà de 65 ans tend à se prolonger, alors que nos parents, nos grands-parents et même nos arrière-grands-parents continuent d’assumer des rôles importants au sein des familles, au travail et dans les collectivités.
