Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is about the cultural bargain; the balancing relationship between author monopoly and user affect desires, as applying to the ambiguity of characters. Character culture is a hybrid of the characters that are created and sold by authors with artistic and legal concerns, and the character-affect-relationship of the audience users of those characters. This study examines the law and industry practices in the United States and Canada as it relates to character and the limited scope of the law in defining just what exactly a character is. Also, I examine the major issues in the cultural bargain between the ownership of characters of authors, and the appropriation of characters by audiences, through the dominate arguments for both authors and audiences and the issue of privileged accessibility to characters. By "appropriate", I am referring to any act of an audience member, utilizing a character they do not own, in new ways, that the original author of the character did not give permission for, or approve. Finally, I present my analysis of how the cultural bargain may experience a balance between both authors and audience, by defining characters using the audience affect interpretation as criteria.

Bi, Chun. "The Cultural Characteristics in China's Official Online Tourism Advertisements". Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Medier och kommunikation, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-175873.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Tourism advertising is an important approach in providing information about tourism destinations and in attracting potential customers, and in this process, particular cultural factors are usually conveyed. In this thesis, the main intention was to describe the cultural factors reflected in advertising and discover the role that Chinese cultural identity plays in China’s official Internet tourism advertisements to overseas markets using a theoretical framework of diverse cultural issues. The objects of this study are the official tourism advertisements from China National Tourist Office’s (CNTO) websites. The author researched Chinese cultural characteristics and tried to connect them with the expressional tendencies in tourism advertisements. Using a quantitative content analysis method, the most frequent cultural symbol in advertising was discovered as the basis and general image of the online tourism advertisements. Then the author discussed the external manifestations of cultural factors in tourism advertising in detail and analysed the internal cultural values behind them using the qualitative discourse analysis method. The main conclusions of this study indicated that the most representative cultural characteristic of Chinese culture in tourism advertising is a high-context cultural feature; in addition, at present traditional ideology in Chinese society, such as Confucianism and Taoism, was still being conveyed in tourism advertising. In general, Chinese cultural traditions influenced tourism advertising expressions, both in external manifestations and internal connotations.

Veerla, Veena, e Maanasa Subrahmanyam. "Influence of cultural dimensions on Agile team behavioral characteristics". Thesis, Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, Sektionen för datavetenskap och kommunikation, 2011. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:bth-2450.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Context: Agile methodologies are widely recognized in western countries. From past few years, its practices are being successfully adopted in global settings especially in eastern countries. Across the world, teams are following its values and principles. Are all the teams behaving in the same way? Potential difficulties related to culture arise while implementing agile practices. Due to variance in backgrounds and behaviors, social cliques and issues are likely to be formed between the team mates which become a hurdle. Objectives: The study unravels the list of relationships between the agile team behavioral characteristics and Hofstede cultural dimensions. It also explores whether Indian employees working in an agile environment possess the required behavioral characteristics which are useful for the effective functioning of a team. The other objective of this study reveals the influence of the years of experience of the agile employees on behavioral characteristics. Methods: Data collection processes include a literature review and a web survey. First, in the literature review analysis of the empirical studies from year 1999-2011 was done. The review approach helped in collecting and summarizing the data. The studies were identified from the most reliable and authentic databases that are scientifically and technically peer reviewed such as Engineering village, IEEE Xplore, ACM digital library, Springer Link and Google Scholar. A survey was conducted with 33 practitioners from various multinational organizations in India. Statistical analysis was used to analyze the data. Results: Hofstede’s cultural dimensions had noticeable influence on agile team behavioral characteristics. Although, all the enabler characteristics were not seen in Indian culture, the results clearly show that some of the cultural dimensions are enabling factors to function well in an agile team and some hinder the team effectiveness. The result from the literature review shows the list of relationships between Hofstede cultural dimensions and agile team behavioral characteristics. All team behavioral characteristics were to a certain extent demonstrated by Indian agile employees, which can be known from the survey results. It is also seen from the survey results that, team behavioral characteristics can be demonstrated more effectively by the experienced agile employees. Conclusion: From this study, we have found the relationships between Hofstede cultural dimensions and agile team behavioral characteristics. List of agile team behavioral characteristics which were followed by Indian agile employees were obtained from the survey. We conclude that Indian agile employees were able to demonstrate all the agile team behavior characteristics required for an effective functioning of a team. One more interesting thing which came into our attention, after analyzing the survey was that years of experience of agile employees do have an effect on the employees which influences the demonstration of team behavior characteristics. It was clear that demonstration of these characteristics were not only dependent on individual’s nature but also on the years of experience in agile environment. The absence of relationships which were not found through literature needs to be focused. Hence we conclude that there is a need for conducting even more in-depth surveys and reviews to investigate the unfound relationships.

Mason, Caroline A. "The geometrical characteristics of oriental carpets : an examination of cultural diffusion". Thesis, University of Leeds, 2002. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3838/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis considers cultural diffusion in the context of oriental carpets. Geometrical symmetry and its classification are an important feature. Literature review covers a wide range of relevant concepts from the disciplines of anthropology, sociology and psychology and includes consideration of aspects from the work of Boas [1938, 1940, 1948], Burton [1992], Levi-Strauss [1963], Jung [1959] and Koffka [1935]. The published work of Woods [1935, 1936], Washburn and Crowe [1988], and Hann [1991, 1992], from the area of geometrical symmetry and its classification, is also considered in some detail and further conceptual development proposed, including a range of concepts relating to the classification of two-colour counterchange patterns. The principle emphasis in the research is on the analysis of patterns and motifs with respect to their symmetry characteristics. Data were collected from 1,000 Persian and Anatolian carpets, and similarities and differences are highlighted. Case studies are presented of the Pazyryk carpet (the oldest known complete pile-woven carpet, held in the Hermitage Museum, St.Petersburg) and the Ardabil carpets (the only dated pair of Safavid carpets, one held in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the other in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles). The geometrical characteristics of each carpet are examined, compared to the results of the larger survey of Persian and Anatolian carpets, and a discussion is developed relating to cultural diffusion.

Barker, Michelle Marie. "Individual, familial, and socio-cultural characteristics of women with eating disorders". Diss., The University of Arizona, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185860.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Responding to strong indications in the research that anorexia and bulimia are reaching epidemic proportions in many Westernized nations, including the United States, Paul Garfinkel and David Garner have proposed a three-part model which implicates individual, familial, and sociocultural factors in the development of these multidetermined disorders. The present study uses Garfinkel and Garner's model to investigate factors related to the existence of an eating disorder in women between the ages of 18 and 38. Three groups of subjects were used in the study: an eating-disordered group (bulimics and anorexic bulimics; 18 women), a normal control group (26 women), and a second, depressed control group (24 women). The hypothesis that eating-disordered women were more impaired than normal controls, as measured by individual, familial, and socio-cultural factors, was largely supported, with the exception of the Bem Sex Role Inventory (socio-cultural measure), where little difference was found between groups. The hypothesis that depressed women would look healthier than women with an eating disorder but more dysfunctional than the normal controls was not supported; depressed women tended to look very much like bulimics and anorexic bulimics on the measures used in this study. Further exploration of socio-cultural factors by measures other than the Bem Sex Role Inventory, as well as further investigation of additional similarities--and differences--between depressed women and eating-disordered women would suggest more specific treatment strategies as well as possible prevention techniques for women afflicted by or at risk for an eating disorder.

RADIS, MICHELA. "Influence of material optical characteristics on vision and fruition of Cultural Heritage". Doctoral thesis, Politecnico di Torino, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11583/2687256.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
For Cultural Heritage materials is important to guarantee a correct conservation and vision of the artefacts, enhancing the observer experience assuring the best visual and conceptual appearance of artefacts. Several factors affect the visual appearance of artistic materials. However, available measurement methodologies for the material characterisation are not able to accurately predict the visual appearance of materials usually used in cultural heritage. Goals of the thesis research was to identify the visual attributes that mainly affect the appearance of artworks, investigate the correlation between measured data and visual human response and individuate if there are measured conditions that allow a better correlation. Finally, provide useful suggestion to aid in planning and selecting adequate conservative intervention, such as restoration work. In order to reach these purposes, different samples representative of materials used in artistic artefacts were selected and realised and two different visual testes were set up and carried out investigating the influence of lighting and viewing conditions on the human visual response of selected visual attributes: glossiness, colour (saturation), brightness and sparkling. The first visual test takes into account how the human visual responses on glossiness and saturation are affected by the lighting and viewing conditions using coloured samples with different levels of gloss obtained brushed on them different mixture of natural varnishes. While, in the second visual test were identified the elements that mainly affect the human perception of sparkling and brightness in monochromatic samples with mica particles, a mineral easily found in ornamental stones. At the end of each visual test, all responses were statistical analysed and, then, the results were compared with the corresponding objective measured data. In this way, it was possible to define what measurement conditions allow to have a better correlation with the subjective assessment.

Schaub, Mareike. "Natural and Cultural Heritage in Tourism on Gotland : Heritage Tourism Characteristics and the Relation of Natural and Cultural Heritage". Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för samhällsbyggnad och industriell teknik, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-414410.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis researches into the heritage tourism characteristics on Gotland. Many destinations see a great potential to develop new tourism products around their heritage and thus meet a rising demand for enriching and unique visitor experiences. However, different considerations and stakeholders need to be taken into account to foster a sustainable development. The Swedish island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea has a long history as a tourism destination and is rich in heritage resources of diverse origin. A qualitative approach has been taken to study which traits characterise heritage related tourism to Gotland, and which potentials and challenges are seen by major stakeholders in the tourism and heritage development. One protruding result has been the strong connection between natural and cultural elements at the heritage sites as well as in tourism demand. Also the tourism strategy for Gotland strives for a further development of nature and culture as thematic tourism areas. Hence, a closer look has been taken into the relation of these two heritage elements. With help of the concept and methodology of heritagescapes two heritage sites have been analysed in a case study approach. The result shows that the integration of natural and cultural heritage to create cohesive and immersive visitor experiences at one site is challenging. However, taking both heritage elements into account can create synergies and they enhance how the respective other heritage element is experienced. This can broaden which visitor groups are attracted and in which season. Furthermore, the heritagescape approach gives practical management implications for the sites.

Henriksson, Tommy. "Physiological- and Socio-Cultural Conditions for Performance in Women's Ice Hockey". Doctoral thesis, Umeå universitet, Idrottsmedicin, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-142866.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Background: The ice hockey community is founded on masculine norms and values, and the hockey rink is often described as “the home of men’s ice hockey”. Despite a growing popularity, women’s ice hockey has low priority in comparison to the men’s game. On top of that, the women’s game does not allow body checking, which makes it deviant from what some see as “the real game of ice hockey”. The checking prohibition causes physiological requirements to differ from the men’s game, and since women are underrepresented in ice hockey research, not much is known regarding the physiological- and socio-cultural conditions of women’s ice hockey. The overall aim of this doctoral thesis is to investigate physiological- and socio-cultural conditions important for performance in women’s ice hockey. Methods: This thesis is unique in terms of the interdisciplinary approach between physiology and gender science, and the inclusion of studies based on both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Qualitative thematic interviews with ice hockey coaches from Sweden, Canada, and the United States were used to explore socio-cultural conditions in relation to performance and sport development (Paper I). Relative age effect (RAE) in relation to maturity status was examined through anthropometric measurements and a player questionnaire (Paper II). Physiological field- and laboratory assessments were used to investigate physiological conditions and performance in female competitive ice hockey players from Sweden (Paper III-IV), and players from Canada (Paper IV). Results: The findings from Paper I suggest that coaches need to maintain a holistic approach to coaching to be able to coordinate and optimize the effects based on available conditions. Socio-cultural conditions, such as structural and financial support, are mentioned as important to support opportunities in women’s ice hockey. Furthermore, the results (Paper I) show that female players in Canada and the United States have superior opportunities compared to female players in Sweden. These advantages are mainly attributed to the support provided by the North American education systems. The findings from Paper II suggest that the relative age effect (RAEs) in women’s hockey are also influenced by socio-cultural conditions. Significant RAE (p<.05) was found for Swedish players born in the third quartile (Q3) and for Canadian player born in the second quartile (Q2). Players born in the fourth quartile (Q4) are significantly (p<.05) underrepresentated in both countries. Players tend to be average or late maturers, but no differences can be found by country or position. The findings from Paper III show that field-based assessments are comparable to laboratory assessments with the purpose of predicting skating performance. The Prediction models accounted for 13.6 % to 42 % (laboratory-based models) and 24.4 to 66.3 % (field-based models) of the variance in skating time. Regardless of assessment method, uni-lateral assessments are superior to bi-lateral assessments. The results support the use of field-based assessments in Paper IV. The findings from Paper IV show various physiological profiles for female Swedish and Canadian players. Swedish players had less body fat (p=.007), more lean mass (p=.005), and greater aerobic fitness measured with the20-meter shuttle run beep test (p=<.001). Canadian players had greater maximal isometric leg strength (p=.026), exhibit a greater running acceleration (p=<.001), performed better in single leg standing long jumps (right leg p=.002, left leg p=.030), and showed better anaerobic endurance (p=.029) on- ice. No significant differences can be found between forwards and defenders. Conclusion: The findings of this study show that physiological- and socio-cultural conditions should both be considered in relation to performance in women’s ice hockey. For example, the various physiological profiles are probably an effect of the different socio-cultural conditions in Sweden and Canada. The Canadian profile may be better adapted to performance in ice hockey, but further research is needed to establish a relationship. Since women’s ice hockey often has somewhat limited resources, this knowledge may help optimize the effect of the available resources, and thus improve performance. Improved performance may have a positive long-term effect on the symbolic view of women’s ice hockey. Women can probably further optimize their physical performance in relation to their current conditions. But for permanent changes to occur, power structures in sport must also change. Women themselves have limited opportunities to affect the dominating gender norms and values in ice hockey.
Prediktionsmodellerna förklarade 13.6 % to 42 % (laboratoriebaserade modeller) och 24.4 % to 66.3 % (fältbaserade modeller) av variansen i åktid.

Abstract (sommario):
Cultural capital facilitators are an unexplored phenomenon in the higher education literature despite their crucial presence on community college campuses. Through the use of social capital theory, social networks, and cultural capital theory, this study explores the role that cultural capital facilitators play in first-generation, community college student information acquisition and ultimate success. Multiple qualitative methods are utilized to discover the cultural capital facilitator characteristics and attributes, social networks and types of cultural capital information shared between first-generation students and cultural capital facilitators. Implications for community college practitioners are also presented in terms of the role that classroom instructors play as cultural capital facilitators as well as the characteristics and attributes that these individuals can acquire through professional development opportunities. Finally, the interconnectedness of cultural capital facilitators' social networks and the domination of academic, cultural capital information are elaborated on for community college personnel in their examination of structural and functional barriers to first-generation student success.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is an empirical examination which links two important areas of management accounting research. The first area relates to the relation between superiors' evaluative styles and the two dependent variables of job related tension and managerial performance. The second area relates to the impact of culture on management accounting system. Two of Hofstede's (1980) dimensions of culture were used in this study. They were power distance and individualism. Two studies, Brownell and Hirst (1986) and Brownell and Dunk (1991), both of which were conducted with samples from a low power distance/high individualism nation were re-examined within the framework suggested by Harrison (1992) that research results related to budgetary participation can be generalized between high power distance/low individualism and low power distance/high individualism nations. Multiple linear regressions were used to test the three-way interaction between budget emphasis, budgetary participation and task characteristics (task uncertainty, task variability or task difficulty), affecting each of the two dependent variables of managerial performance and job related tension. A four-way interaction between budget emphasis, budgetary participation, task difficulty and culture was also tested. A questionnaire was administered to a sample of 410 functional heads from 142 manufacturing companies located in Singapore and Western Australia. Singapore was selected as a surrogate for a high power distance/low individualism culture and Western Australia as a surrogate for a low power distance/high individualism culture. The results of the study lend support to the existence of a three-way interaction affecting managerial performance in the case of task difficulty (Van de Ven & Delbecq,1974) but not in the results of Brownell and Hirst (1986) and Brownell and Dunk (1991). No significant three-way interaction between the independent variables affecting job related tension was found. Furthermore, the absence of any four-way significant interaction between budget emphasis, budgetary participation, task difficulty and culture affecting managerial performance provide strong support for Harrison's (1992) hypotheses that research results on budgetary participation can be generalized between nations with high power distance/low individualism culture and nations with low power distance/high individualism culture.

Abstract (sommario):
This study examined the use of cognitive skills by 5-year-old Alaskan Native children on a standardized testing instrument. The Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scales of Intelligence (WPPSI) were administered to 23 boys and 17 girls of predominantly Tlingit, Tsimshean, and Haida ancestry. A standardized parent interview was used to collect bio-demographic data. Mean scores for the sample displayed significant differences between the Performance and Verbal scales, with the strongest performance in the Spatial subtests, and lowest in the Sequential subtests. Scores were significantly associated with variables representing culture-specific self identity and behavior, but were most strongly associated with family size. Factor Analysis suggested a distinct three factor structure consisting of (1) a Performance-Spatial, (2) a Verbal-Semantic, and (3) a Sequential factor. Variability in the use of cognitive skills, non-verbal behavior, and selective attention are viewed as unique cultural adaptations which can impede interethnic communication, creating negative outcomes in the education of American Indian and Alaskan Native children.

Abstract (sommario):
The Job Characteristics Model is widely accepted as a conceptual tool for addressing problems related to employees’ motivation, dissatisfaction and organisational performance. Therefore, this study attempts to apply Hackman and Oldham Job Characteristics Model (JCM) by among the five core dimensions of autonomy, skill variety, task identity, task significance and feedback and job satisfaction and employees’ turnover in the Libyan oil companies located in Benghazi city. Also, to explore the current situation of organisational determinants of job satisfaction in the Libyan oil companies and to investigate its correlation with employees’ job satisfaction. These factors (pay/rewards, supervision, promotion opportunity, relationship with co-workers and work conditions) are tested empirically in the companies studied. A total of 400 questionnaires were collected and 20 interviews were conducted in four oil companies. The main findings of the study confirm the positive correlations among the five core dimensions of the JCM and job satisfaction. Also, organisational factors were found to influence employees’ job satisfaction as the employees were satisfied with their pay/rewards, supervision, promotion opportunity, relationship with co-workers and working conditions. Moreover, employees have shown more concern for factors such as job security and change in the social status. Also, it was found that employees’ turnover increased in relation to security and social factors such as the absence of safety and security in the oil fields after the Libyan uprising, especially those oil fields located in the Eastern region. It was also found that the correlations among job satisfaction and employees’ turnover was negative and the correlation among the five core dimensions of the JCM model and employees’ turnover were negative too. The study makes a significant contribution to knowledge in theory and practice. Among such contributions are identification of gaps in the literature on job satisfaction and the core dimension of job characteristics model. Also, the study contributes to the redesign of jobs and working relationships in the Libyan oil companies.

Leong, Vivian Wai-Sum. "The impact of area-based cultural characteristics on participation with the Fair Pharmacare program in BC". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/1501.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Background: Little Canadian research exists which examines equitable access to public pharmaceutical insurance. In order to better understand issues related to access to publicly funded, universal prescription drug insurance in Canada, my thesis examines participation with (and therefore access to) the Fair PharmaCare program in BC. Specifically, my thesis: 1) describes methodologies that can be used to create area-level cultural variables for use with BC administrative data; and 2) studies the impact of household and area-level factors, particularly area-level cultural factors, on non-senior households’ registration for Fair PharmaCare in 2003. I hypothesized that the process of registration may act as a barrier to participation with Fair PharmaCare, particularly for households belonging to various culturally defined communities. Methods: Dissemination area (DA) level census data were obtained from Statistics Canada to create dichotomous, ecological variables which capture the collective ethnic composition, English language capacity and immigration status of residents within each DA. In turn, these variables were employed in multivariate, logistic regression analyses, which also included household-level measures of demographics, enabling resources and health status as well as area-level measures of income and health care resources. The outcome of interest was registration for Fair PharmaCare. Findings: Controlling for area-level income and health care resources, household-level demographics, enabling resources and health status, as well as area-level cultural factors, influenced households’ likelihood of registration for Fair PharmaCare. Households belonging to DAs with a high concentration of individuals reporting a Chinese or Punjabi ethnic background, or DAs that were ethnically homogeneous, regardless of the ethnic background, were more likely to register. In contrast households belonging to DAs consisting of a high concentration of recent immigrants or individuals belonging to ethnic minority groups that are underrepresented in BC were less likely to register. Conclusions: Considering the policy context surrounding the implementation of Fair PharmaCare, the findings from my thesis suggest that specific subpopulations within BC may face difficulties with the registration process, thereby reducing their participation in the program. Government interventions however, appear to have improved registration amongst other subpopulations. Consideration should be given to interventions that may reduce inequities in participation amongst other subgroups.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Title: Services Marketing in a Cross-Cultural Environment – The Case of Elekta in Russia Level: Final assignment for Master Degree in Business Administration Authors: Alena Bazyleva and Maria Zaytseva Supervisor: Dr. Maria Fregidou-Malama Aim: The aim of this research is to investigate how the products and services of the Swedish company Elekta are marketed in Russia, a country with cultural environment different from Sweden. For this purpose such aspects of marketing strategy as adaptation/standardization, trust and network development, which help to decrease the influence of intangibility and heterogeneity of services, are examined. Method: In present research explanatory applied type of study was used to describe services marketing process. Combination of induction and deduction methods, and qualitative methods of research were used. Case study of Swedish company Elekta was chosen as the research area. Primary data was collected through survey by means of semi-structured interviews and open questionnaires. Secondary data was collected from sources such as relevant books, scientific articles, company brochure, and websites of company and its clients. Results and conclusion: The research reveals that trust, network building, balance of adaptation and standardization strategies, employed by Elekta company, help to overcome heterogeneity and intangibility of its services in Russian market. It has also been found that the image of Sweden as a country of origin plays an important role in trust establishment in Russia, but in a sense that it is a foreign country, not Sweden in particular. Moreover, it is suggested, that organizational structure of international company, matrix structure in this particular case study, favours the development and effectiveness of the discussed variables. In spite of such characteristics of Russian market as high bureaucracy, corruption, “blat” network, unstable laws, etc., this market is considered to be a promising emerging market for international business. Russian national culture displays large power distance, high uncertainty avoidance, collectivist and feminine values, which influence the whole society and the business sphere as well. Suggestions for future research: It would be beneficial for future research to expand the range of complementing studies, examining the cases of Elekta in different countries and emerging markets in particular. In addition, in order to develop international services marketing theory, it is necessary to include other services industries in the scope of research. Furthermore, getting feedback from the patients, who experienced treatment on Elekta equipment, can contribute to the future research. Contribution of the thesis: The modification and adaptation of the theoretical framework of Fregidou-Malama and Hyder (2011) made by authors of this study contributes to the theory of international services marketing process. In addition, as there is lack of research in this area for health care sector, this study can be valuable addition to this research area. Research of the case of Elekta in Russia complements the range of studies on international services marketing process in health care sector with the cases of Elekta company in different countries: Egypt, China, the Philippines, Brazil, Hong Kong. Besides, current research has certain practical value: it is beneficial for international companies expanding into emerging markets in general and in Russian market in particular. This research may help to increase awareness about Elekta treatment solutions. Key words: Elekta, Gamma Knife, Russia, Services Marketing, Services characteristics, Network, Trust, Adaptation, Standardization, Culture, Organizational structure.

Abstract (sommario):
This study aims to explore communication deviances and strategies in the negotiation discourse of Malaysian-Australian business encounters, from both a linguistic and nonlinguistic perspective. Specifically, it sees miscommunications/deviances as factors that may hinder the business communication process and prevent the negotiators from achieving their objectives. The study also focuses on strategies, or those discourse skills which promote successful business negotiation. The research method is based on the analysis of discourse generated from initial 'perception' interviews, business meetings, and post-meeting 'follow-up' interviews. The research involved a cross-section of Malaysian and Australian business people from various industries; such as tourism, information technology, hospitality and financial services. The initial 'perception' interviews were intended to gather data on the prior experiences of Malaysian and Australian businesspeople, both in terms of the reported difficulties and strengths in their business interactions and dealings in Western Australia. In the second stage of the analysis, the deviances which signalled miscommunication in the negotiation were identified in the recorded meeting data. Also identified were the strategies which were used by the negotiators to increase the likelihood that their goals will be achieved. The objective of the research was then to interpret why these strategies were being used, and their influence on the negotiation process. From the data a pattern emerged in the way that deviance occurred, and the way that strategies were being performed. This has made it possible to group deviance and strategies and present the findings thematically. Altogether, five themes identified, these were: Management of topics, Building rapport; Ethical business conduct; Building recognition; Styles in business practice. The study has shown that business communication discourse reflects the embedded culture of its speakers. Topic management was also found to play an important role in the business meetings as it enabled the participants to more effectively lead their discussion towards its intended goal. Both the deviance and strategies have been managed by the business negotiators in the way they select the appropriate topic categories in order to effectively maintain the discussion throughout the meeting.

Experiential education has a long history of development in Europe and America. In Taiwan, with the implementation of 12-year compulsory education, “traditional achievement-oriented” schooling is forced to seek new changes and new breakthroughs. Experiential education that emphasizes on “learning by doing” will play an even more important role in the future. Ministry of Education also encourages schools to combine local culture with curriculum, plan localization characteristic course platform, provide places for visiting and experiential learning, and have students get involved in the environment, experience life, become the learning center and expand their learning perspective. In addition, application of digital creative technology can not only cross time and space but also help to save, organize, disseminate and use the creativity, cultural assets and many kinds of knowledge with Information Technology, making knowledge, cultural resources and creativity shared globally and accelerating the progress of civilzation. This paper starts with the concept of experiential education, combining local culture with so called “Science Teaching” to design a series of creative teaching activities to make students learn by experience. And perform value-added activities for experiential learning process and student research with digital technology like e-books, multimedia and Sketchup 3D modeling. We integrated the five topics into the Google Maps website, including “Fun of Salt and Lagoon”, “Fun of Silkworm and Mulberry”, “Fun of Frog and Plant”, “Fun of Kenting“ and “Essence of Results”. The results showed not only enthusiastic response of the curriculum but also their creative reflection and the feedback. Students get to learn more how to express their appreciations and that greatly enhance the effectiveness of teaching. In addition, we integrated experiential education activities into webpages. When users visit the websites, they can have fun virtually and authentically . This way, more students are willing to learn on-line and reinforce the concept of experiential learning. Let users regard "Smart Life" as normal and reach the "Smart Taiwan" alternative "infrastructure" advocated by Executive Yuan, so that we can make Taiwan become the World U application window.

China has become the world factory and market nowadays. In order to consolidate competitive roles in China, more and more national businesses come to China exploring the markets; however, due to the difference in cultures and values, the operators have difficulties in managing the local business effectively. Cross-culture businesses have to overcome these cultural differences to improve the manage efficiency. Though in the early research, the Leadership theory had been proved having positive effects on business management, yet these theories didn’t take cultural factors into consideration. Therefore, this research suggests that the Cross-culture businesses had better put emphasis on cultural elements and apply to leadership. Nevertheless, because there are too many factors that may affect managing and as for cultures, they are abstract that can’t be counted or measured, therefore, these are methods used in this research to find out those possible factors: using Fuzzy set to measure and evaluate the importance of culture for Cross-culture businesses management, individual interviewing with the management staff of company A. The steps are as follow: First, establish an objective Multi-criteria evaluation including four aspects: Chinese culture, technological environment, economical environment and political environment. Second, use the integrated Fuzzy method, for example, Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) to obtain the weight in each aspect in order to prove that Cross-culture businesses with cultural management will have more advantage of operation and competition.

This study takes the rites as a performing art to dicusss the vivid performance of Dang-gi in ritual process in Taiwan. From the literature reviews of anthropology, medical science, historical science and folklore, the researcher has found that most of the studies related the Dang-gi focus on the mental analysis, social image, and medical behavior. It seems that there is no study focusing on the ritaul movement analysis. Hence, the researcher integrates the cultural theories to interpret and analyze the ritual movements of Dang-gi by taking the literature reviews of sociology and anthropology related religions, rites, and perfomring arts. In addition, the researcher creates a systematic and appropriate movement analysis method combing the method of western dance movement record and Choreological Studies to make up the lack of reviews related the ritaul movement analysis and to broaden the point of view of the traditional rite culture. According to this, the researcher discusses the movement qualities and cultural meanings of Dang-gi in the rites. In 2005, the researcher attended the celebration ceremony of His Highness Royal Lord Chifu’s Birthday in Nankunshen Dai Tian Temple. The researcher adopts the method of field studies and observation records in public, and the method of interviews in private temples. From the field studies, the researcher has recorded the 29 films of different Dang-gis’ ritual movements and also has interviewed the 27 Dang-gis. In the perspective of movement analysis, the researcher not only adopts the Motif Writing advocated by Valerie Preston–Dunlop in 1979 to record the Dang-gis’ movements, but also takes the method of Effort analysis in Eukinetics advocated by Rudolf Von Laban to analyze the effort states, effort drives, and full actions of Dang-gis’ movements in the rites. The researcher has found that there is a transformation between the inner intention of Dang-gi’s movements and his consciousness from the observations of Dang-gis’ movements which mix and switch the movements quailities of Dreamlike State, Remote State, Passion Drive, and Spell Drive in turns. The traditional ritaul passage has founded and restricted the basic procedure and structure of Dang-gi’s rite. The body of Dang-gi has became a container to take on the high spirits from the trainings. In the rites, there is a transformation between Dong-gi and the high spirits to make Dong-gi own the personalities of both. The process of becoming a Dang-gi not only needs the training of how to communicate with the high spirits, but also includes self-study, learning by observation, and being taught by master. In the celebration ceremony of His Highness Royal Lord Chifu’s Birthday, the Dang-gi ensures the spirtitual holy power by devoting the incense to god and the participants experienced the unseen divine spiritual through the performances of Dang-gi. In conclusion, the researcher adopts the method of Motif writing, Effort, and the rites and perfomance theories to analyze and discover that Dang-gi’s ritaul passage includes the people’s beliefs, the ritual tradition and personal characteristics.
