The book attempts to map out some of the major themes relating to community-based fisheries-management systems, environmental sustainability, lottery systems for allocating fishing spots, fishing livelihoods, local knowledge, social vulnerability to environmental hazards, socioeconomic factors affecting small-scale fisheries development, history of destructive fishing practices, women’s entrepreneurship in the seafood sector, traditional leadership systems, religious festivals, and power relationship between local communities and government agencies. The aim of this book is then to provide a comprehensive and multifaceted analysis of the cultural richness of this fishing sector, which still plays a key role in the broad academic debates focused on the potential small-scale fishery trajectories within the context of global scenarios.

Letta in continuità con le precedenti pubblicazioni Osdotta, questa consente di seguire quanto si va sviluppando nel terzo livello di formazione in un momento particolarmente critico per l'istituzione universitaria, continuando a porre l'accento sul nodo domanda/offerta di ricerca, nel confronto con altre istituzioni e con il mondo della produzione di settore, nell'attuale scenario dominato da trasformazioni sempre più rapide e incisive. La qualificazione dei corsi di dottorato, attraverso la riflessione sugli esiti immediati e a lungo termine, parallelamente alla precisazione dei contenuti identitari del settore disciplinare, restano le principali sfide da continuare ad affrontare. This publication provides considerable material for reflection on the subject of Mediterranean Architecture between Heritage and Innovation, demonstrating the wide range of aspects linked to Architectural Technology, in which one is struck by the flexibility of the disciplinary boundaries with regard to the various meanings that can be applied to the concept of resource. Taken together with the previous publications of Osdotta, this consents one to trace the developments in the third level of education at a particularly critical time for the university institution; the emphasis continues to be placed on the crucial issue of supply/demand of research; the situation is compared with other institutions and with the world of production in this sector, in a present-day scenario dominated by ever more rapid and incisive transformations. The main challenges left to be faced are to improve the quality of PhD courses, after due reflection on the immediate and long-term results, whilst defining more precisely the identitary contents of the disciplinary sector.

In the period following the Second World War Giulio Preti was one of the leading exponents of Italian philosophy. A master of open critical thought, cultivated in the light of a rationalism that dialogued with, and integrated into his own philosophical model, many of the currents and stances of the global research scenario. Phenomenology, Marxism, pragmatism, neopositivism, transcendentalism and structuralism: in Preti all of these found an organic and original synthesis. Further, his particular brand of rationalist-critical thought touched on many aspects of philosophical knowledge: theoretical philosophy, the philosophy of science, that of language and that of art, from ethics to politics and even taking in the history of philosophy, offering authoritative contributions in every sphere. One hundred years after his birth, the University of Florence and the heir to the Faculty in which he lectured at length, the Faculty of Education, has decided to honour his memory with this anthology of studies, penned by former pupils and others and also by younger scholars, to once again focus the wealth of this thought and its, in many respects, current relevance. Even now, this particular brand of open, critical rationalism can offer a benchmark for addressing the new issues for philosophical reflection thrown up by modern society and culture.

Let's try to imagine a world where scientific illiteracy is the exception rather than the rule. A world, that is, where the vast majority of people are informed and aware of the major scientific debates in progress, and capable of reflecting on them in an independent and critical manner. A world in which each person would have the resources at their disposal to elaborate a considered opinion on the techniques of cloning, genetically modified organisms, the new anti-cancer therapies or even about the origins of life on Earth or the final destination of the universe. If this world were possible, what would it be like? Scepticism about the feasibility of such a scenario is justified; however, at the same time it is equally undeniable that in the course of the twentieth century there have been such profound transformations in the relations between science and public opinion as to make the question legitimate and deserving of an answer.

Nell’anno 2020 l’Italia ha dovuto fare i conti con la crisi sanitaria ed economica determinata dalla diffusione del virus COVID-19. La straordinarietà della situazione, con l’Europa alle prese con lockdown e fermi produttivi, ha portato l’Osservatorio a far seguire alla tradizionale rilevazione avviata a fine Febbraio 2020 una seconda indagine di approfondimento mirata a raccogliere le prime reazioni delle imprese della filiera alla crisi da coronavirus. Questa edizione del volume è, quindi, particolarmente ricca di spunti in quanto collega la fotografia del 2019 alla situazione generata dalla pandemia nel 2020. Il quadro complessivo è quello di una filiera i cui risultati in termini di fatturato, produzione ed export erano già in contrazione nel 2019 e, di conseguenza, particolarmente esposta alla crisi del 2020, soprattutto per alcune categorie di imprese meno resilienti. Il superamento di questa situazione critica potrà giocarsi sulla capacità di sviluppare aggregazioni e reti per l’innovazione, con obiettivi importanti di competitività dell’intera filiera sullo scenario internazionale.

Abstract The modern-day intensivist requires facility with a wide variety of complex clinical scenarios. This book will present thirty-five of the most common scenarios in a problem-based learning format. It is the author’s intensions that the reader will think about the scenarios as presented at the beginning of each chapter and discuss the therapeutic challenges with colleagues prior to reading the discussion. The discussion of each chapter is then followed by a number of questions that the reader may use to test their retention of the material or use for teaching purposes when interacting with students and trainees. Lastly, we would encourage our readers to go back and re-read the initial scenarios once have read the discussion and rework the case. While the authors have suggested one course of treatment, there are other therapeutic options that should be considered.

Anti-arrhythmic drugs (AADs) are an important component of the pharmacological arsenal used in the management of the critically-ill patient. The benefits of AADs, as well as their potential disadvantageous side effects, largely depend on their effects upon the cardiac action potential. AADs can be broadly grouped according to their cellular actions, upon which their clinical effects depend. However, there is substantial cross-over amongst the groups in terms of these actions and efficacy for particular arrhythmias, and also for side effects. Amiodarone exhibits a broad spectrum of antiarrhythmic activity and is often the most useful AAD for the critically-ill patient where short-term use reduces concerns relating to toxic side effects associated with chronic administration. However, each of the other available AADs have their uses for particular scenarios in the critically-ill patient, although attention needs to be paid to comorbidities to attenuate the risk of adverse response. AADs are pro-arryhthmic in 5-10% of patients with potential lethal consequences, and the use of AADs in the critically-ill patient should be considered very carefully as correction of the underlying substrate may be sufficient in some circumstances to resolve the index arryhthmia.

George Garrett, poet si romancier, noteaza in introducerea unui volum de scenarii: „Aceasta remarcabila colectie de scenarii ar putea foarte bine sa reprezinte o veritabila manifestare a literaturii secolului 20”. Scriitorul Sam Thomas considera ca este important sa „recunoastem si sa admitem ca scenariul pentru film, in cele mai reusite forme ale sale, poate si ar trebui sa fie considerat literatura in aceeasi masura ca un roman sau o piesa de teatru de mare insemnatate”. Regizorul rus Andrey Tarkovsky afirma exact contrariul: „Nu privesc scenariul ca pe un gen literar. Intr‑adevar, cu cat un scenariu este mai cinematografic, cu atat mai putin poate pretinde un statut literar de sine statator, in maniera in care o piesa de teatru o poate face atat de des. Si noi stim ca in practica niciun scenariu nu a fost vreodata la nivelul literaturii”. Paul Schrader, scenarist la „Raging Bull” si „Taxi Driver”, celebrele filme regizate de Martin Scorsese, a insistat spunand ca „eu nu sunt un scriitor. Sunt scenarist, adica jumatate de regizor”. Iar regizorul suedez Ingmar Bergman admitea ca „Filmul nu are nicio legatura cu literatura”. In 1984, Gary Davis, teoretician de film, citat de Stevan Maras, scrie: „desi anumite sectii de critica si de literatura engleza incep sa studieze filmul dintr‑o perspectiva literara, nimeni nu prea stie ce sa faca cu scenariul”.

Seizures are a common problem in intensive care units (ICU) and the advent of continuous electroencephalography is demonstrating that the incidence of seizures is still underestimated. Many patients considered encephalopathic from any cause are now found to be in non-convulsive status epilepticus. While the significance of non-convulsive seizures remains unclear, there is little disagreement that these seizures should be treated with antiseizure agents and prevention of any type of seizure is a reasonable therapeutic goal. Many antiseizure agents have been studied in ICU populations and extensive experience exists with drugs such as phenytoin, valproate, or pentobarbital. Since the previous edition of this textbook, several new antiseizure agents have been introduced. Levetiracetam, topiramate, and lacosamide have been established as reasonable pharmacologic options, in particular for treatment of status epilepticus. Patients with seizures in the ICU often present with challenging clinical scenarios, which influence the choice of antiseizure agents. For example, reduced liver or renal function, especially if needing continuous renal replacement therapy or intermittent haemodialysis, has an impact on drug level variability and susceptibility to seizure development. ICU patients will typically require a multitude of pharmacological agents for their specific clinical situation and drug–drug interactions must be considered. Additionally, many medications used in ICUs are associated with seizures, in particular, certain antibiotics. Overall, the development of new drugs and better monitoring methods will undoubtedly improve our ability to control seizures in ICU patients, but currently no treatment has been shown to be universally effective for challenges, such as refractory status epilepticus.

This textbook, ‘Challenging concepts in paediatric critical care’, has been designed to cater to the needs of paediatric intensivists, current trainees and those intending to train in the future. Similar to its predecessors in this ‘Challenging concepts’ series, this book aims to educate clinicians by describing clinical situations that are both common, such as bronchiolitis, sepsis etc., and complex, such as mechanical circulatory support, stem cell transplant etc., in paediatric intensive care medicine. The textbook contains 18 chapters based on challenging scenarios involving variety of diseases and organ dysfunctions. Each chapter contains several “Learning Points”, “Clinical Tips” and “Evidence Base” boxes embedded in the text with the aim to promote memory and stimulate learning. These run alongside an “Expert Commentary” written by an international group of experts in the field, to give practical advice of how they approach these difficult situations. Many chapters include results and imaging to enhance the fidelity and narrative style of text, that encourage the reader to understand the patient journey and feel part of the decision making process. The clinical topics in this book are aligned to match the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health’s paediatric intensive care medicine curriculum in the UK, as well as the curriculum of Paediatric Basic assessment and support in intensive care (BASIC) course and the various domains of Paediatric/neonatal European Diploma in Intensive Care (PEDIC) curriculum.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper summarizes some of the main results that have been obtained through the archaeozoological study of the large Cypriot Pre-Pottery Neolithic site of Shillourokambos, dated between 8300 and 7000 cal bc. It shows how the presence of the archaeozoologists in the field, as well as an original faunal-based critical approach of the relative chronology of the different phases of occupation of this site, can improve the quality of the archaeozoological contribution to the cultural history of the region. Special attention is also paid to the osteometric study of sexually dimorphic ungulates. The results concern the evolution of the system of exploitation of the animal resources during this important phase of the Near Eastern Neolithic transition. They also evidence the long-distance exchanges between early Neolithic villages and they indirectly document the early history of navigation in the eastern Mediterranean.

Echocardiography is the first line examination for the diagnosis of suspected pericardial disease. Assessment of pericardial disease is of critical importance for the management of patients in a number of clinical scenarios. This chapter discusses the definition of these scenarios and their associated echocardiographic findings. It shows the definition and echocardiographic findings of pericardial effusion and constrictive pericarditis. Constrictive pericarditis is characterized by impaired cardiac diastolic function due to a thickened, inflamed or adherent, frequently calcified pericardium. It is often post-surgery, radiotherapy, or as evolution of effusive pericarditis. The chapter also chapter shows the definition and echocardiographic findings of pericardial cysts and congenital absence of pericardium.

Paediatric critical care retrieval provides some of the most challenging clinical scenarios for the retrieval physician. Children have a relatively low incidence of critical illness in comparison to adults and they constitute a minority of the population (around 20% or less in high-income countries). Approximately 50% of critically ill children are under 2 years of age, with a more even age-distribution from pre-school through to school-age and teenage years. Consequently, paediatric intensive care and paediatric intensive care retrieval are low volume, highly specialized areas of practice in healthcare systems that cater predominantly for adults. In comparison to neonatal retrieval, the case load in paediatric intensive care transport is small; however, there is a much wider spectrum of pathology. Thus, paediatric intensive care transport differs from both adult and neonatal retrieval. It requires appropriate specialist expertise and skills in the entire age-range and disease spectrum of paediatric intensive care as well as a well-designed paediatric retrieval system.

Post-conflict scenarios are often proposed for Arab countries that have witnessed significant changes and civil wars. Yet the plans for reconciliation, transitional justice, and the return of the displaced often overlook the real conditions that make these recommendations impossible. This book provides a critical analysis of current post-conflict frameworks for Syria and Iraq. Drawing on empirical research, the book shows that reconciliation and reconstruction scenarios need to be considered alongside the realities on the ground. It argues that Iraq and Syria exist in a condition of ‘conflict transformation’ rather than of ‘conflict termination’, because the extreme changes that accompanied these countries into war continue long after the conflicts end. Furthermore, the chapters highlight why experts should not seek solutions in culturalist terms and ancestral enmities, or rely on the wartime status quo. Rather, they should look to the specific military, political, economic and socio-cultural conditions that require different solutions. A critical analysis of existing post-conflict frameworks, their applicability and their potential outcomes in Iraq and Syria, the book is a vital contribution to post-conflict studies. It highlights the need for new approaches to reconstruction and peacebuilding in Arab countries and points to how they should be found.
