This paper is a personal account of five “eye-opening” career experiences in the author’s life that illustrate how biographical events shape opportunities and inspire knowledge- making in critical gerontology. Borrowing from Pierre Bourdieu’s methodological concept of “fieldwork in philosophy,” this account suggests that critical thinking only becomes eaningful in the lived contexts in which it is grounded, negotiated, transformed, and shared. Thus theoretical ideas about ageing, despite their abstract nature, have historical and unpredictable stories of their own that are worthy of a “fieldwork” approach. The paper also emphasises that the “critical” in critical gerontology includes a strong reflexive and self-critical dimension about the subjective conditions of doing gerontological research, especially in the face of gerontology’s claim to be an objective science.

Shahnon Ahmad ialah seorang penulis yang diangkat sebagai Sasterawan Negara oleh Kerajaan Malaysia. Pada masa yang sama, beliau seorang intelektual awam yang digemari oleh masyarakat. Buktinya karyanya Shit (1999) yang amat kontroversial. Dalam berkarya beliau tidak kenal kawan atau lawan, tidak gentar mengungkapkan apa-apa sahaja idea dan pendiriannya. Karyanya mulai tahun 60-an banyak sekali mengetengahkan pelbagai isu yang membelenggu rakyat, di desa dan di kota. Namun begitu, sejak sekitar awal 2000-an apabila memasuki usia emas, Shahnon memperlihatkan perubahan yang ketara dalam penulisannya. Beliau jelas kelihatan mula menerapkan penghayatan usia emasnya dalam karyanya. Dalam konteks tersebut, makalah ini bertujuan menganalisis novelet “Sebuah Mimpi Buat Hari Tua” (2003) dengan tumpuan terhadap keperihalan manusia pada usia emas. Karya ini dikaji berpandukan kerangka konseptual kajian gerontologi kritikal oleh Nancy R. Hooyman dan H. Asuman Kiyak. Kajian mendapati novelet “Sebuah Mimpi Buat Hari Tua” memenuhi tiga dimensi dalam kajian gerontologi kritikal iaitu biologi, psikologi dan sosial. Malah, karya ini juga memperlihatkan apa-apa yang dipaparkan oleh pengarang kelihatan selari dengan pandangan para sarjana dalam gerontologi kritikal. Penemuan kajian ini penting kerana hasilnya menegaskan kedudukan novelet “Sebuah Mimpi Buat Hari Tua” sebagai suatu bahan gerentologi sastera. Kata kunci: usia tua, gerontologi kritikal, dimensi biologi, dimensi psikologi, dimensi sosial, gerontologi sastera Abstract Shahnon Ahmad is a writer who has been elevated as a National Laurate by the Malaysian government. At the same time, he is a public intellectual well-liked by his community. As evidenced by the highly controversial novel Shit (1999), in producing his works he did not consider friends or opponents, and was never afraid in expressing his ideas and conviction. His works starting from the 60s often highlight various issues plaguing the communities in the urban and rural areas. However, since the early 2000s when Shahnon was at the later stage of his life, his writing had undergone an extreme change. He started to incorporate his experience of old age in his works. In this context, this article aims to analyse a novelette titled “Sebuah Mimpi Buat Hari Tua” (2003), with the focus on the human condition at old age. This work is analysed based on the conceptual framework of critical gerontology by Nancy R. Hooyman and H. Asuman Kiyak. This study finds that the novelette “Sebuah Mimpi Buat Hari Tua” fulfils three dimensions of gerontology, namely biological, psychological, and social. In fact, this literary work shows similarities between the author’s perspectives and the views of scholars in critical gerontology. The findings of this study are important because they assert the position of “Sebuah Mimpi Buat Hari Tua” as a material for literary gerontology. Abstract This paper examines the extent to which critical gerontology has raised awareness of the heterogeneity of rural ageing in High Income Countries (HICs) and compare this to our knowledge of the issues that are associated with rural ageing in Low to Middle Income Countries (LMICS). We will draw on Nancy Fraser’s social justice framework to summarize key issues around: (1) Demography (such as globalization, urbanization, counter-urbanization and rural population ageing); (2) Resources (individual material and social resources; community resources such as access to services); (3) Recognition (social status, cultural visibility through social participation and cultural worth through valued social roles); (4) Representation (in social, health and rural development policies; and in private sector and NGO approaches). We argue that an intersectional approach that takes into account location and context (structural/economic/political) alongside other dimensions of oppression and/or privilege can provide a better understanding of the experience of ageing in rural areas.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores the political discourse´s portrayal of elderly needs in Sweden, as well as discourses the lived effects on the elderly population. The study is guided by the following research questions 1) What is the current political discourses construction of elderly´s needs? And 2) How could this discourse affect the elderly population? To fulfil the purpose and answer the research questions the study utilizes a critical discourse analysis. The study also employs a wide theoretical foundation with central concepts deriving both from a general sociological tradition, such as symbolic interactionism. As well as more specialized gerontological theories, such as ageism and structured dependency. By using a thematic analysis as well as a synthesising analysis the study provided both an in-depth and collected depiction of the discourse on elderly needs as well as its lived effects. The analysis found four thematics of interest, a) Emotional needs b) elderly´s need of others c) organizational needs and d) basic amenities. All of which were characterized by a dystopian and ageist portrayal of old age. Seemingly based on ageist stereotypes rather than the characteristics of the actual demographic. Similarly, the overall narrative showed that elderly where portrayed as a homogenized collective of others. The narrative also depicted elderly as a very simple, dependant and burdensome demographic. The lived effects were varied under the thematic analysis, these could be characterized under two overarching trends. Firstly, the risk that elderly embrace the dystopian role depicted in the discourse. Secondly the discourses skewed portrayal of elderly can lead to less effective and potentially destructive policies and resource allocation.

The main objective of this thesis is to develop a critical approach to the recent anti-aging discourse which has become popular after the 1990&rsquo

Anti-aging movement is concerned with certain implementations which aspire to make individuals live longer and healthier by controlling and disciplining their bodily conditions and lifestyle choices. This study attempts to examine certain perceptions and assumptions of anti-aging discourse about body, living and keeping alive peculiar to late modern times by taking into consideration three popular emblematic anti-aging books. For this aim, the techniques, recommendations, suggestions and basic premises of popular anti-aging books are examined in terms of the question whether anti-aging discourse presents a new project concerning body and lifestyle, or not. In order to answer this question, Foucauldian theory on &ldquo
the power over life&rdquo
and Sontag&rsquo
s approach to &ldquo
the metaphorical representation of illness in late modern times&rdquo
are employed for constructing the theoretical basis of this thesis. The examination of anti-aging discourse reveals that, this discourse redefines the meaning of age and reinterprets human temporality by narrating aging process with certain metaphors. Moreover, it is seen that anti-aging discourse transforms the aging process into a performative sphere by representing the aging as a merely biological and controllable situation.

This dissertation aims at analyzing mindfulness as a concept and a multidimensional phenomenon in its historic and primordial but also contemporary contexts. In the course of examining this more general question, this dissertation targets four specific objectives: 1) classifying existing definitions of mindfulness, 2) critically analyzing and interpreting the Buddhist and Western interpretations and practices of mindfulness, 3) elaborating on the social and existential dimensions of mindfulness, and 4) applying these dimensions in advancing the notion of mindful sustainable aging in the context of successful aging. Paper I examines and assesses the numerous definitions of mindfulness that have been presented over the years by a wide range of scholars from a variety of disciplines. Paper II traces the roots of modern mindfulness in Buddhism. It continues by exploring the utility and practices of mindfulness in the context of social work. The definitions provided in Paper I and the Buddhist underpinnings discussed in Paper II call attention to the fact that in addition to the more commonly considered physical and mental dimensions, mindfulness contains a social and an existential dimension as well – dimensions that remain under-researched and not well understood. To redress this imbalance, Paper III elaborates on these two latter dimensions, emphasizing their potential to enhance health, wellbeing and meaning in life. Paper III further argues that a more nuanced understanding of physical, mental, social and existential mindfulness can be obtained by examining the interconnectedness of all four fields. Paper IV continues the discussion of the social and the existential dimensions of mindfulness with specific emphasis on their utility for successful aging, and advances the notion of mindful sustainable aging. Paper IV highlights the potential of mindfulness for living a meaningful life and boosting the elderly’s capacity to find deeper meaning in their final stage of life.

abstract: Greater than half of older adults who are admitted to an acute care setting experience delirium with an estimated cost between four to twenty billion dollars annually in the United States. As a strategy to address the gap between research and practice, this feasibility study used the Roy Adaptation Model to provide a theoretical perspective for intervention design and evaluation, with a focus on modifying contextual stimuli in a Trauma Intensive Care and a Trauma Orthopedic Unit setting. The study sample included older hospitalized patients in a Trauma Intensive Care and a Trauma Orthopedic setting where there is a greater incidence for delirium. Study participants included two groups, with one group assigned to receive either a music intervention or usual care. The music intervention included pre-recorded music, delivered using an iPod player with soft headsets, with music self-selected from a collection of music compositions with musical elements of slow tempo and simple repetitive rhythm that influence delirium prevention. For the proposed study a music intervention dose included intervention delivery for 60 minutes, twice a day, over a three day period following admission. Physiologic variables measured included systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate, which were electronically monitored every four hours for the study. The Confusion Assessment Method was used as a screening tool to identify delirium in the admitted patients. Specific aims of this feasibility study were to (a) examine the feasibility of a music intervention designed to prevent delirium among older adults, and (b) evaluate the effects of a music intervention designed to prevent delirium among older adults. Findings indicate there was a significant music group by time interaction effect which suggests that change over time was different for the music and usual care group.

Research on aging in low income countries tends to overlook socio-cultural dimensions, including the significance of change. Because countries like Kenya are expected to witness a demographic shift in coming years, and because different forms of change will place new pressures on existing resources during the same timeframe, there is a need to bridge this gap. This study therefore grapples with the following question: How is change shaping the characteristics and needs of Kenya‘s aging population? This thesis adopts a mixed methods approach informed by critical gerontology and life course perspectives to examine the aging experiences of Pokot elders living in Marich Pass, north western Kenya, in face of multi-scalar changes. Results highlight the challenges and opportunities created by change, and illuminate a need to develop resources to support informal caregivers, to buttress existing formal supports, and to develop additional formal supports to address the unique needs of Pokot elders.

This thesis explores lifespan and intergenerational trauma effects experienced by Russian Mennonite women who fled from Stalinist Russia during WWII and migrated to Canada, and adult sons or daughters of this generation of women. As an adult child of survivors, I employed an autoethnographic methodology, conducting 1-on-1 interviews with eight women aged 78 to 96, and seven adult children aged 50 to 68. Older women demonstrated a lifelong emphasis on mental strength, faith, and resilience; the marginalization of emotions; evidence of insecure attachment styles; and potential for unresolved trauma to resurface in later life. The majority of adult children experienced attachment and identity issues; their life experiences are viewed through the lens of biological, psychological, familial, cultural (religious) transmission of trauma effects. Results highlight the importance of structural and narrative social work approaches that externalize and contextualize trauma and transform service environments that individualize and/or pathologize lifespan outcomes of trauma.
