The authors will present a comprehensive account of the neurological aspects of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The aim is to provide a practical clinical book which will serve as a guide for clinicians from all specialties involved in the management of COVID-19 patients. The authors share the extensive clinical experience gained in major hospitals in Lombardy, the first European region to face the COVID-19 emergency in 2020. All are recognized international experts in their respective fields and have been involved in the management of COVID-19 cases from the very beginning of the Italian SARS-CoV-2 outbreak. The text begins with a description of pathobiological and pathophysiological aspects related to the involvement of the nervous system, moving on to the discussion of the neurological complications observed in COVID-19 patients; these range from central to peripheral symptoms, and can occur in the acute or post-acute phases of the disease. Further topics are: neuropathology, seizures and EEG, neuroimaging, delirium, encephalomyelitis, stroke, psychopathology and psychiatry, neuropsychology and cognitive impairment, neuromuscu-lar disorders, and the impact of COVID-19 on other pre-existing neurological disorders. In addi-tion, the book will discuss the new developments in teleneurology approaches, which have been a direct response to the ongoing pandemic. Finally, the possible neurological complications of the COVID-19 vaccines and the neurological complications in children will be considered.Each chapter will present a critical review of the existing literature concerning the specific subject matter, followed by practical clinical recommendations, as well as personal considerations based on the experience gained by each author during the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. Like any other infectious disease, the prognosis of COVID-19 is influenced by infecting agent, the SARS-CoV-2 virus load and the extent of organs affliction and damage. COVID-19 having a propensity for multiorgan involvement carries an adverse prognosis during the clinical course as well as later during the post-recovery period persisting as Long Covid. The direct cytopathic effects of SARS-CoV-2 virus and the erratic and hyper-inflammatory response lead to tissue injury in various organs coupled with physiological dysfunctions and complications. In fact, the multi-system manifestations of COVID-19 are caused by a combination of specific host defence responses with associated inflammatory activity and vascular involvement with coagulopathy and a distinct propensity to develop thromboembolic complications. Simultaneously, comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases influence the disease severity and mortality.

The pandemic of COVID-19 has adversely affected almost every aspect of our lives but the world health and economic sectors suffer most of the repercussions of this disease. The search for a cure for this rapidly spreading virus which is causing massive life losses around the globe requires clear understanding of the immunopathogenesis of this virus as well as the mechanisms of actions of the various therapeutic modalities that are employed in the treatment of this life-threatening viral infection. Mesenchymal stem cells have antimicrobials effects in addition to their anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. They have been utilized in the treatment of various infections and their complications both in animal models and in human clinical trials. Mesenchymal stem cells derived from certain sources and their secretory products are particularly effective in the treatment of pneumonia, sepsis, acute lung injury, and acute respiratory distress syndrome which are common complications of COVID-19 infections. The review will discuss the various aspects of COVID-19 and it will highlight the promising role of mesenchymal stem cells in treating the complications of COVID-19 infections.

This article serves as a guide for the public, patients, and their loved ones to understand Long COVID. It is organized into key sections, beginning with an introduction to Long COVID and an explanation of who is at risk. It then explores the prevalence of Long COVID, providing statistics on how common the condition is. The signs and symptoms section details the wide range of symptoms that patients may experience. Diagnosis covers the methods used to identify Long COVID, while the complications section discusses the potential risks and health issues associated with the condition. Pathophysiology explains the underlying mechanisms of Long COVID, and the treatment section outlines various management strategies and therapies. The prognosis section offers insight into the potential outcomes and long-term outlook for individuals with Long COVID. All information is presented in simple terms to ensure it is understandable for all readers.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation—An Interdisciplinary Problem-Based Learning Approach provides an overview of the latest techniques, management strategies, and technology surrounding the clinical use of ECMO. This interdisciplinary book reviews the most common scenarios of ECMO in 62 chapters exploring the conditions and problems arising in ECMO practice. Each chapter begins with a stem case, followed by open questions to encourage critical thinking and enable the reader to follow the management strategies of the authors, who are world leaders in the field. Followed by an evidence-based discussion, each chapter concludes with multiple-choice questions for self-assessment. This book is current in its knowledge of organ systems and management and keeps pace with new ECMO technology and surgical techniques coupled with current guidelines for management. Starting with the history of ECMO to technical aspects, circuit biocompatibility and interaction with blood, drugs, and flow physics, the volume then continues into pediatric and adult sections, focusing on both respiratory and cardiovascular support, followed by a section on trauma. The volume then concludes with a section on neurologic complications and ethics, as well as rehabilitation and ambulation of ECMO patients. In addition, to reflect the current global health situation, this book includes a chapter on ECMO management in patients suffering with COVID-19 to cover the most urgent and pressing questions around ECMO during the ongoing pandemic. This is the first ECMO book on the market to utilize a problem-based learning approach and as such is an important unprecedented project on ECMO education.

As we write these words, the COVID-19 pandemic has become part of our lives in a much more controlled way. For instance, some of our habits have changed and we are able to resume our activities in the way of a “new normal,” returning to social contact with family, friends, and colleagues. In returning to a life without the constraint of the virus at such a high level, the academy tries to resume its rituals, including scholarly events. Email boxes and physical boards at universities are once again filling up with calls for submission of abstracts for congresses, seminars, and workshops. As these events are happening again, academia seems to be reflecting on the pros and cons of onsite scientific events. While acknowledging the importance of such scientific events and their potential for strengthening scholarly communities and collaborations, many academics have begun questioning the real impact of being physically present. This questioning seems to be based on several factors. On the one hand, it is clear that universities have been increasingly devaluing academics’ presence in congresses (unless by invitation). They allocate less funding for these activities, especially for those academics who wish to attend an event without presentation. With no presentation, institutions devalue attendance in performance appraisal processes. Increasingly, academic institutions value publications (indexed, despite some positive movement seeking to counter the tyranny of the “publish or perish” motto), and an academics ability to raise funding. Yet, not all congresses are associated with publication processes in indexed journals or proceedings. Books of abstracts (once edited by any congress) are almost extinct, namely because of their devaluation by institutes of higher learning (and funding entities). On the other hand, the massive and necessary use of online scientific events in 2020 and 2021 allowed us to realize that it is possible, efficient, and effective to hold these events in a format different from the traditional one. The internet offers versatility and more and more congresses are now offered online or in hybrid formats. These formats allow academics to overcome financial and physical complications caused by in-person scholarly events. Academics can request less funding and, at the same time, mitigate concerns of acceptance without presentations, covering classes while away, or having to supplement university sponsorship with personal funds. At some universities, funding comes after attendance regardless of availability of those funds and academics are asked to pay registration fee, plane tickets, and lodging with the expectation of being reimbursed upon return. This is particularly challenging given the present economic situation around the globe. At the same time, while physically at the event and away from families, work continues to accumulate for academics. They then must wade through this excess upon returning home, adding to an already excessive workload. This makes maintaining a work-life balance challenging. We at New Trends in Qualitative Research (NTQR) believe it is particularly relevant to discuss this topic within the context of the release of NTQR Volume 11. NTQR is an indexed journal associated with international scientific events in the field of qualitative research - Congreso Ibero-Americano en Investigación Cualitativa (CIAIQ) and the World Conference on Qualitative Research (WCQR). Specifically, the volume that we edit here aggregates works that, having been originally presented at WCQR2022 (held in an online format), went through a double-blind review process. This volume, annually edited (as WCQR is an annual event), allows us, as editors, to condense a diverse set of qualitative research work, focusing on different topics, and with different methodological designs. And, our concern as editors has always been to assure the quality of the published works, namely through a careful review and editing process. We do not know if we are ready to give up our physical presence at scientific events. But, with opportunities such as online presentations and online publishing venues, we may now be much more judicious in this presence. We may now take time to ponder the relevance of investing in attending a scientific event, and selecting (hand-drawn) two or three events per year, at most. WCQR has a strong emphasis in the building of a scientific community (in this case, bonded by the interest in qualitative research), reconciling physical and online presence, and is associated with quality journals.
