Testo completoCoastal currents experience many sources of instability, resulting in the formation of coherent structures such as eddies. These structures play a fundamental role in the oceanic circulation and in the transfer of properties in the ocean. Three configurations of idealized coastal currents are studied in this thesis-: a frontal one, a quasi-geostrophic one and a shallow-water one. The well known baroclinic instability is shown to exist for all these currents, and a new mechanism, the parametric instability, is described. It appears on flows which present a periodic variation of one of their components. The oscillating parameter is the current speed in the frontal configuration, the baroclinic transport or PV in the quasi-geostrophic one and the barotropic flow in the shallow-water one. Analytical calculations allow to compare growth rates of both baroclinic and parametric instability and to show the amplification of parametric instability in the vicinity of the marginal stability curve for baroclinic instability. Numerical simulations are used to show that the effects of parametric instability are similar to the effects of baroclinic instability on the quasi-geostrophic flow. The shallow-water modal presents a density front with caracteristic scales representative of the Ushant front. It is shown from MICOM simulations that baroclinic instability can explain the observed instabilities of the front for a large part. Parametric instability effects are identified, but their impact seems to be weak
Buisson, Olivier.
Toulouse 3, 2008. http://thesesups.ups-tlse.fr/465/.
Testo completoThe objective of this thesis is to study the impact of atmospheric Coastal Jets on the upwellings of the Humboldt Currents System. A double approach is used: the first one consists in studying the Atmospheric and Oceanic Circulation as well as the Ocean/Atmosphere interactions from the observations, whereas the second aims at modeling these Circulations in a realistic way by means of numerical regional models (ROMS for the ocean modeling and WRF for the atmosphere modeling. The obtained results suggest that there are various Atmospheric Coastal Jets along the Chilean and Peruvian Coasts. For certain ranges of frequencies, they control the upwelling variability of Chile and Peru. A heat flux balance of the Ocean Mixing Layer allows to identify the main mechanisms which control the oceanic answer off Central Chile. Moreover, we show that the Peruvian coast is under the influence of the both local atmospheric forcing and remote forcing. At some frequencies, the Kelvin wave trapped to the Peruvian Coasts induce a control of the coastal ocean variability by the Equatorial variability. The atmospheric regional model reproduces with realism the Chilean Coastal Jets whereas it has difficulty in simulating the atmospheric circulation at the level of Peru. The oceanic simulations reproduce the oceanic answer to the Coastal Jets off Central Chile. A heat flux balance of the Mixing Layer allows us to study what are the main mechanisms which control the oceanic answer in the model. Finally, we show that the regional models present a sensibility to the spatial resolution of the atmospheric and oceanic models. In particular, close to the coast, the wind characteristics in the atmospheric model depends on the spatial resolution of the model. This sensibility induce that the oceanic answer depends on the forcing field spatial resolution. .
Meunier, Thomas. "Dynamique des filaments d'upwelling". Brest, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011BRES2022.
Testo completoThe nature and dynamics of upwelling filaments are investigated. A numerical process study is performed in order to elucidate the trapping of filaments near topographic anomalies. The generation of potential vorticity anomalies is shown to induce a trapped circulation which pinches the coastal front and pulls it far offshore. The process is shown to be sensitive to the shape of the topographic anomalies and other parameters. The interactions of a surface boundary current and a deep remote counter-current are also studied using a shallow water model. First, a quasi geostrophic linear stability analysis showed that this current system is unstable whatever the thickness of the intermediate layer. The various non-linear regimes are shown, and the sensitivity of the process to various parameters is studied. It is also shown that deep remote eddies could also trigger meanders and filaments from a surface front. Finally, the dynamics of the upwelling filaments forming off Cap Blanc (Mauritania) is investigated using in-situ and remotely sensed data. It is shown that the eddies related with the Cape Verde Frontal Zone were mainly responsible for the offshore-entrainment of coastally upwelled water. Topographic effects are shown to be important too in advecting the water into the external eddy field. In all cases, it is shown that upwelling filaments arise from the interactions of vortical structures and coastal fronts

Testo completoThe Low Latitude Western Boundary Currents (LLWBCs) of the Southwest Pacific establish a major connection between the subtropics and the equator. They are believed to play a key role in heat and mass budgets of the equatorial Pacific and cross, as a final passage, the Solomon Sea southeast of Papua New Guinea. As part of a France-U.S. collaboration, two oceanographic multidisciplinary cruises were conducted in the Solomon Sea during contrasting trade wind sea- sons, in July-August 2012 and March 2014 to characterize currents, water properties and their modifications. During July-August 2012, the season of strong southeasterly trade winds, an in- tense flow of 36 ± 3 Sv from the surface down to 1000 m is entering the Solomon Sea, that falls by 70% to 11 ± 3 Sv in March 2014 when the winds over the sea are weaker. The LLWBCs are associated with distinct water mass properties across the Solomon Sea that can be tracked along their pathways, and undergo significant modifications between the southern entrance and the northern exits of the sea. Below 2000 m, the Upper Circumpolar Deep Water (UCDW) has been traced from the New Caledonia Trench and the South Fiji Basin into the Solomon Sea, associ- ated with a volume transport of 2-3 ± 2 Sv. Preliminary analyses of the mooring array in each major exit channel indicate large time variability of the LLWBCs in both =intensity and vertical extent, where thermocline pathways vary in most cases, coherently and in phase at intraseasonal to seasonal time scales

Testo completoBoundary currents, characterized by strong velocities and dynamic interactions with continental margins are the main drivers of ocean variability in the adjacent coastal regions. The first part of the thesis focuses on High-Frequency RADAR observations of the Northern Current in the North Western Mediterranean Sea and of the East Australian Current in the South Pacific Ocean. In the Northern Current system, we investigate the seasonal and inter-annual variability of the current and the occurrence of (sub) mesoscale eddies, while we focus on the study of the separation dynamics of the East Australian Current, its frontal characteristics and overall impact on surface chlorophyll-a concentration. Boundary currents, by their spatial extent and position along the continental shelf, are important in acting both as barriers and conveyers of transport of passive matter. The second part of the thesis focuses on Physalia spp., a pseudo-passive stinging organism floating at the ocean surface which regularly reaches Australian shores. We are able to estimate the relative impact of atmospheric and oceanic variables on Physalia spp. beaching. From laboratory experiments, we establish a parametrization of the wind-induced drift of 3D-printed replicas of Physalia spp. This result is then incorporated into a Lagrangian tracking model based on the most recurrent East Australian Current separation scenarios to assess the combined effects of winds and currents on the pathways of Physalia spp. The results presented in this thesis contribute to the knowledge of two boundary currrents characterized by different scales and modes of variability, giving insights in their role in transport of passive material through the study of Physalia spp journey
Akuetevi, Cataria Quam Cyrille. "Dynamics of turbulent western boundary currents at low latitudes, a numerical study". Thesis, Grenoble, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014GRENU002/document.
Testo completoStrong western boundary currents are one of dominant features of the world oceans, also at low latitudes. They exhibit a turbulent dynamics and their region is a source of strong kinetic energy production and internal variability of the worlds oceans. Several places exists where the western boundary currents retrofect (i.e separation from the coast) and generate coherent structures as anticyclonic eddies, bursts and dipoles. The dynamics of turbulent western boundary currents has so far not been extensively studied in the viewpoint of turbulent boundary-layer theory. The approach followed in this thesis is to use a fine resolution (2.5km) reduced-gravity shallow water model to understand the turbulent boundary-layer processes and then apply these findings to the Ocean General Circulation Model NEMO in the Drakkar configuration (~10km). The case of the Somali Currentis considered for this application

Testo completoWaters from the South Equatorial Current, the northern branch of the South Pacific subtropical gyre, have been identified as having an important contribution to climate variability and El Niño-Southern Oscillation. Initially a broad westward current extending from 2°S to 30°S, the South Equatorial Current splits upon the major archipelagos of Fiji (18°S, 180°E), Vanuatu (16°S, 168°E), New Caledonia (22°S, 165°E) and Australian coasts resulting in two main zonal jets entering the Coral Sea: the North Caledonian Jet (18°S, 180°E) and the North Vanuatu Jet (16°S, 168°E). In this work, we focus on the oceanic circulation using hydrographic data from sea cruises and we apply two inverse methods: the "inverse box model" and the "optimal multi-parametric analysis". Then, we report interannunal variability and its impacts on the Coral Sea circulation. We first study the East Caledonian Current which runs along the east coast of New Caledonia and feeds the North Caledonian Jet. Both currents extend about 100 km horizontally, to at least 1000 m depth vertically and transport 15 Sv (1 Sv = 106 m3. S-1). In the northern part, the North Vanuatu Jet is larger (~300 km) and shallower (0-500 m) and transports around 20 Sv. A part of these waters reaches Australia and supplies the Solomon Sea via its western boundary current, the New Guinea Coastal Undercurrent estimated at 30 Sv. These structures are characterized by water mass properties. Secondly, we emphasize the thermocline and intermediate waters to depict water mass pathways and mixing. In the thermocline, the New Guinea Coastal Undercurrent is mainly supplied by North Vanuatu Jet waters at the thermocline level while in the intermediate level, waters come from the North Caledonian Jet. This complementary approach shows that intermediate waters are mainly carried by deep currents and subsurface waters by the North Vanuatu Jet. In the last part, interannual variability is analyzed on the 1993-2010 period with a 1/10° numerical simulation and a proxy method based on altimetric data. Interannual variability of the South Equatorial Current mass transport follows the El Niño-Southern Oscillation with a 3-months lag. The North Vanuatu Jet leads this variability. Controlled by winds, the South Equatorial Current variability is associated with thermocline depth modulation, which involves intensification after an El Niño event (6 ±4 Sv) and a decrease after La Niña (4 ±4 Sv). We also show that temperature and salinity anomalies are the result of thermocline depth modulation
