Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to Sir Dmitri Dmitrievich Obolensky, Professor of Russian and Balkan history at Oxford University, who is known for his study of the “Byzantine Commonwealth” and its influence on the Eastern European Slavic peoples: Bulgarians, Serbs and Russians. As a well-known British scholarly historian and philologist and the son of a noble emigrant from Russian Empire, Prince Dimitri Alexandrovich Obolensky, Obolensky tried to remain in close intellectual contact with the Russian science throughout the entire period of the Cold War and until his death in 2001. Obolensky, as a very religious person, was interested not only in the processes of transformation of the Russian society after the end of the Cold War, but also in the Russian spiritual revival that took place in the country after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The article analyzes the changes in the academic and journalistic works by Obolensky in the context of both global processes — perestroika, the end of the Cold War, the collapse of the Soviet Union, democratization, the growing influence of the Orthodox Church in Russia — and local issues — family drama, a decline in study of both Russian language and history in universities in Great Britain and in Europe. The personality of Dmitri Obolensky, his spiritual and his intellectual heritage as well as the results of his philosophical studies and forecasts for the development of the Russian society expressed during the last decade of his life are of undoubted interest to the Russian reader.

Abstract (sommario):
Second in the anthology, the volume offers a rich collection of materials, including descriptions of 1900s–1930s Spain by Russian travellers. Artists, musicians, journalists and people of the theatre, all of them share their expectations, recollections and impressions from visits to this Southern country. A poeticized image clashes with reality, which often stands in stark contrast to the idyllic picture. Spain beckons, mesmerizes, and reveals its luxurious self. The country is wrought with controversy: the archaic lifestyle in the provinces and the dizzying pace of life in big cities; its amiable, but very apathetic people; its glorious past and almost desperate present. Russians travel to Spain to experience its natural beauty and splendid cultural heritage. Many of them revelled in visiting the Prado Museum. Numerous performers would come to Spain to tour, spreading knowledge of Russian music, ballet and drama among local audiences.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: Coming thirty-five years after The Deer Hunter, Out of the Furnace , a largely overlooked drama directed by Scott Cooper, seems to revisit Michael Cimino's Vietnam War classic: both focus on working-class Pennsylvania communities against the backdrop of industrial landscapes and decay, war trauma, and even deer hunting. Yet the resemblance between the two films should not overshadow their differences. Cooper's film acknowledges the material limitations of working-class life, which were partly dismissed in The Deer Hunter 's representation of a humble yet convivial Russian American community of steel workers, three of whom set out to fight for their country in Vietnam. Conversely, in Out of the Furnace , two brothers grow apart as one accepts his unsatisfactory working-class position and the other serves in Iraq, hoping to make enough money to escape the mill. This article proposes a parallel between the two films' treatment of working-class masculinity and class determinism in the Rust Belt region at two different yet comparable periods in American history.

Abstract (sommario):
The article discusses the issue of reception of Russian drama of the 20th century in China on the basis of the theatrical and critical reception of A. Arbuzovs play Old-Fashioned Comedy , which was repeatedly staged in theaters of the country at different cultural and historical stages and in recent years has again been in demand among theatrical figures and audiences. An analysis of the performances of a well-known text, reviews and readers' reactions to it make it possible not only to trace changes in the perception of the play in a foreign cultural space, but also to examine the social processes that cause such changes, as well as to touch upon the theatrical life itself and stage experiments in China. The conclusion is made that the universal human content of the playwright's plays, the timeless values that are affirmed in his work, and the inherent scenicity, the organic nature of the dramatic language help to successfully adapt the authors works not only to the modern Russian theater, but also for the foreign language ones. An example of a successful dialogue of cultures in the theatrical and dramatic sphere is the stage history of the play Old-Fashioned Comedy in China.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to the study of the ideologically and thematically interconnected novels of the Kabardian writer M. Gubzhev (1913-1997) “The Clever Paves His Milky Way” and “The Two-Legged Wolf” in their national and genre-style specificity. For the first time, as the author’s indi-vidual skill is studied, his contribution to the development of the genre of the Kabardian novel is determined. The content and compositional features of the novels dedicated to the dramatic peri-ods of the life of the Circassians in the entire country are determined. The scientific novelty of the proposed work consists in restoring the picture of the development of Kabardian literature, in cor-relating its most significant facts with the changing historical and cultural context and in particu-lar in identifying the original features of the studied novels by M. Gubzhev. Today's themes of war and revolution are relevant. New accents appeared in the works of famous prose writers of the older generation. Indicative are the novels of M. Gubzhev, which are a highly artistic work of modern national literature. They raise the theme of the recent past, but the works show a novel approach, a view from the standpoint of today. The difficult time of collectivization, the post-war revival - the heroes of M. Gubzhev’s novels withstood all these tests with honor. Revealing in the novels the harsh drama of the path traversed by the heroes, the author embodies the historical ex-perience of their native people in their destinies. The imagery, poetry of the language, colorful descriptions of the life and traditions of the Kabardians attract attention. The practical signifi-cance of the article is determined because the materials of this study can be used in the develop-ment of lecture courses on the history of Kabardian-Circassian literature, in preparing textbooks on literature, as well as in the writing of fundamental scientific research on individual representa-tives, specific periods and artistic phenomena of the literatures of peoples in South Russia.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to the problem of N. A. Berdyaev’s ambiguous and contradictory attitude to Eurasianism - the ultra-right political trend of Russian emigration in the 1920s and 1930s. The author sees the reasons for Berdyaev’s rapprochement with the Eurasians in the collapse of the religious and mystical ideal that captured the philosopher’s imagination during the First World War. Under the influence of religious excitement that seized part of the Russian intelligentsia in the pre-war period, he believed in the nearness of the end of history and the onset of the millennial Kingdom of God on earth. According to Berdyaev, Russia was called upon to fulfill its historical mission in this final act of the world drama. This role (the “Russian Idea”) was to unite the East and the West in a global religious and cultural synthesis. The revolution of 1917 destroyed Berdyaev’s eschatological ideal and forced him to radically reconsider his view. From a Christian anarchist, he turns into a statesman, a defender of conservative values and social hierarchy. During this period, his social philosophy is very close to the ideology of fascism. But fascism was a pan-European phenomenon and in each country had its own original versions. The Eurasian movement was one of the varieties of Russian fascism. Berdyaev’s political sympathies brought him closer to this movement and became the main reason for long-term cooperation with its leaders. However, the commitment to the values of individual freedom and Christian personalism as the basis of his worldview did not allow Berdyaev to go far in his passion for right-wing conservative ideas. In the late 1920s, he sharply criticized the totalitarian features of the Eurasian ideology. After the National Socialists came to power in Germany, Berdyaev gets the opportunity to compare European far-right regimes and creates a general theory of totalitarianism. In this theory, he uses Eurasian concepts and terminology. Thus, Eurasianism becomes a model for him, on the basis of which he develops his theory of totalitarianism. After the end of the Second World War, the philosopher got deeply disappointed. After the end of the Second World War, the disappointment of the philosopher was due to the failure of his hopes for a softening of the political regime in the USSR. He was again seized by gloomy forebodings of an unsuccessful end to human history. And although the hope for a favorable outcome of the struggle between good and evil did not leave Berdyaev until the end of his life, a sense of realism weakened those hopes and faith in the feasibility of the “Russian Idea”.

Abstract (sommario):
The author examines in detail the reception of Arbuzov's play "My Poor Marat" on the Chinese stage since 2000, analyzes the opinions of critics and audience reactions, as well as other types of responses to this dramatic text in modern Chinese culture. The problem of perception of the Russian dramaturgy of the twentieth century in China is raised on the material of the modern Chinese artistic and critical reception of Alexey Arbuzov's play "My Poor Marat" (1964). The work of Alexey Arbuzov, one of the most sought-after Soviet playwrights on the world stage, is the main subject of research. The play of this playwright "My Poor Marat" has been repeatedly staged in Chinese theaters, and in 2021 it again proved to be in demand by theatrical figures and the audience, which indicates the relevance of this study. The scientific novelty of the research consists in the fact that the work has studied the most popular performances of "My Poor Marat" in China since 2000, as well as an art exhibition based on the play. The practical significance of the results obtained is that their analysis reflects the dynamics of the development of Chinese society, changes in mentality, dominant themes of the time, dialogue with other cultures and various aesthetic systems, the specifics of theatrical life and the theatrical market in the country. The conclusion is made that the stage reception of Russian drama in China is closely connected with the socio-political aspect of the country's life and national mentality, affects the official ideology and individual consciousness, reflects the dialogue of foreign cultural factors and traditional forms of national culture.

Abstract (sommario):
The theatrical performances that appeared in the country after the revolution of 1917 with an audience of tens of thousands of spectators were a landmark phenomenon of social and artistic life. The art of mass spectacles burst into the streets and squares, subordinating the historical architectural ensembles of Petrograd to an artistic design. These searches began in the Theater and Drama Workshop of the Red Army, which existed in Petrograd from 1919 to 1920. The article is devoted to the second theatrical performance of the Workshop – "The Third International" (1919). The subject of this article is the reconstruction of the revolutionary theatrical performance "The Third International". The purpose of the study is to establish the director's method of creating a performance and to establish the origins of the activation of the viewer as a method of directing theatrical performances. The methodology of the research is of a historical and theoretical nature and is based on the classical methods of the Leningrad (Gvozdev) school of theater studies, the formal school of literary studies, the method of historical reconstruction of the performance developed by the German philologist and theater historian Max Herman.  A detailed reconstruction of the theatrical performance of the "Third International" of the Theater and Drama Workshop is given for the first time on the pages of a scientific publication. In the same view, N. G. Vinogradov-Mammoth for the first time introduces the activation of the viewer as a directorial technique. The results and conclusions of the study can be used in courses of lectures and seminars in the following disciplines: "History of the Russian theater of the XX century", "History of theatrical performances and holidays", "Theory of directing", "Directing of theatrical performances and holidays", "Fundamentals of dramaturgy of theatrical performances and holidays", "Screenwriting" and "Screenwriting composition", "Scenography of a mass holiday" and "Stage technique", "Methodology of studying mass performances".

Abstract (sommario):
Boris Sushkevich and Nadezhda Bromley (Sushkevich-Bromley) are remarkable theatrical figures, actors and directors whose lot was connected with the bright and dramatic periods of our country’s theatrical life from the beginning to the middle of the 20th century. They devoted a part of their professional life to the 1st Studio of the Moscow Art Theatre (from 1919 — Moscow Art Academic Theatre), which later became a separate theater (Moscow Art Academic Theatre II, 1924—1936). Since the middle of the 1930s, they worked in leading Leningrad theaters — the Leningrad State Academic Drama Theater (Alexandrinsky Theatre) and the New Theater (1933—1953, now the Saint Petersburg Lensoviet Theatre). This article introduces little-studied archival sources of biographical nature related to the work of these outstanding cultural figures.Nadezhda Nikolayevna Bromley was a heiress of the Bromley — Sherwood creative dynasties, which had made a significant contribution to Russian culture. She joined the troupe of the Moscow Art Theater in 1908, performed on the stage of the 1st Studio (1918—1924), was one of the leading actresses of the Moscow Art Academic Theatre II after its separation, participated in its Directing Department being in charge of the literary part. Generously gifted by nature, N. Bromley wrote poems, short stories, novels; her fictional works “From the Notes of the Last God” (1927) and “Gargantua’s Descendant” (1930) earned critical acclaim. Two plays by N. Bromley were staged in the Moscow Art Academic Theatre II. One of them — the full of hyperbole and grotesque “Archangel Michael” — was passionately accepted by E.B. Vakhtangov and A.V. Lunacharsky, though never shown to a wide audience. At the Leningrad State Academic Drama Theater and the New Theater, N. Bromley not only successfully played, but also staged performances based on the works by A.P. Chekhov, A. Tolstoy, M. Gorky, F. Schiller, and W. Shakespeare.Boris Mikhailovich Sushkevich, brought up by the Theater School of the Moscow Art Academic Theatre and in the Vakhtangov tradition of the playing grotesque, is one of the most interesting and original theater directors of his time. His directorial work in the play “The Cricket on the Hearth” based on a Christmas fairy tale by Charles Dickens became the hallmark of the 1st Studio (and later of the Moscow Art Academic Theatre II as well). This play remained in the theatre’s repertoire until January 1936. B. Sushkevich was a recognized theatre teacher — with his help, the Leningrad Theater Institute (now the Russian State Institute of Performing Arts) was established in 1939. Together with N. Bromley, he managed to fill the New Theater with bright creative content and make it a favorite of the Leningrad audience. This research expands the understanding of a number of yet unexplored aspects of the history of theater in our country and recreates the event context of the era.

Abstract (sommario):
The article raises the actual questions: if the theater can be Christian and who in that case the actor is — “a priest” or “a buffoon”. The purpose of this article is to consider the issue of “Christian theater” at different levels: historical, psychological, social. The article analyzes the issues of actors’ personalities formation and their religious searches. There are considered the conditions of Christian upbringing in families and faith preservation in the complex historical period of the Russian history of the late 19th — mid-20th century. The novelty of this study lies in the fact that it introduces into scientific circulation little-known manuscript materials stored in the Manuscripts Department of the Russian State Library: 44 autobiographies of recognized actors, which were published in 1928 in edited form by the writer V.G. Lidin; as well as some other unpublished documents. The sources show that actors brought up on Christian ideals followed them in their work, despite the difficult conditions of socio-political life in the country. Among them are well-known actors of the Moscow Art Theater, Moscow Art Academic Theater, State Academic Maly Theater, Vsevolod Meyerhold State Theater, Bolshoi Drama Theater, Vakhtangov State Academic Theater (and others): V. Kachalov, I. Ilyinsky, R. Apollonsky, L. Vivyen, G. Ge, A Koonen, A. Orochko, G. Martynova and other masters. The article also uses some little-known writings of the actors, their questionnaires on the psychology of acting, photographs, as well as manuscripts and published memoirs of their contemporaries (E.D. Golovinskaya, E.A. Korotneva, V.D. Markov, Yu. Panich), allowing to consider the issue of “Christian theater” from different sides.

Abstract (sommario):
Ivan Aleksandrovich Pyryev passed away fifty years ago. However, for all these years he did not become a purely historical figure, his films have not gone into nothingness, disputes about his personality and creation have not ceased. The director, screenwriter, organizer of film production, he left a rich creative heritage. Having not received a special education and actually a dilettante in art, Pyryev, nevertheless, for half a century of work in the cinema has reached the highest professionalism, having traveled from the actor and the assistant to the screenwriter, helmer, director of Mosfilm, initiator and the first head of the Union of Filmmakers of the USSR. Ivan Pyryev's creation is known to many millions of viewers of different generations for those lyrical, musical comedies with which the heyday of Soviet cinema of the socialist realism period is identified: The Country Bride, Tractor Drivers, They Met in Moscow, Symphony of Life, Cossacks of the Kuban. Analyzing the era of the Stalin Renaissance, it should be noted that Pyryev filmed, in fact, always in demand, a movie about the struggle between good and evil, about the desire of heroes to go through any obstacles to reach happiness. And this means that I.A. Pyryev created genuinely national films in the 1930s and 1940s. These same tendencies became the basis of the pictures set by him during the Great Patriotic War, the heroic drama Secretary of the Communist Party District Committee and the lyrical comedy Six O'Clock in the Evening After the War, each of which inspired the audience with faith in victory and gave hope for happiness. The appeal of Pyryev in the late 1950s to the adaptation of F.M. Dostoevsky was unexpected and paradoxical. The explanation here is one: the turbulent, reeking talent of the artist pushed him to new creative searches in order to escape from stereotypes of the Soviet theme. His best screen interpretations of Dostoevsky's novels are the films Idiot and The Brothers Karamazov. Not all succeeded Pyryevs screen reading of the most complicated works of Russian literature was not absolutely efficient. However, he did a lot to passionately, persuasively and passionately told about the tragic fate not only of Dostoevsky's heroes, but of Russia itself. He created films about love, its immense power, condemning nihilism, cynicism and lack of spirituality. That is why the phenomenon of Pyryev, as a unique phenomenon of domestic cinema, remains an object of close attention and research of modern film studies.

Abstract (sommario):
It was found that the «Ukrainian student community» at the University of Derpt was founded in October 1905 during the revolutionary events in the country. Its official name became the «Musical and Dramatic Society of Minor Russian Students». Contributors to the Rada newspaper called it the «Society of Ukrainian Students at Dorpat University». At the time of formation, 55 Ukrainian students joined the community. It had its own management and structure – commissions (library, scientific, drama, etc.), as well as a mutual aid fund. «Ukrainian Student Community» at Derpt University periodically organized and held «Ukrainian events». During these evenings, students gave popular scientific reports on Ukrainian studies, recited poems by Ukrainian poets, performed plays, sang Ukrainian songs, and danced Ukrainian folk dances. These evenings were held during the «Shevchenko days», in memory of Mykola Lysenko, Lesya Ukrainka, Ivan Franko. Students collected funds during literary, musical and artistic evenings. They directed the collected funds to the organization of events, the purchase of Ukrainian books for the library, as well as to the monument to Taras Shevchenko. Among the problems in the activity at the beginning of the 20th century of the «Ukrainian student community» at the University of Derpt were the frequent lack of funds, the periodic lack of its own premises, the gradual decrease in the number of members of the community due to the decrease in the number of Ukrainians among the students of the University of Derpt due to the ban on graduates of the local theological seminary to enter the university. In general, the work of the «Ukrainian student community» at the University of Derpt was aimed at promoting Ukrainian culture and preserving the ethnic identity of Ukrainians. It became an integral element of «Ukrainian life» in the Baltics, which, in turn, was a component of the Ukrainian national movement against which the Russian government fought.

Jo, Sunggu. "Soft Power in Northeast Asia, Using AI in Information Warfare". J-INSTITUTE 8 (31 agosto 2023): 23–36. http://dx.doi.org/10.22471/ai.2023.8.23.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Purpose: Conflicts between Korea, the United States, Japan, North Korea, China, and Russia continue along with the competition for supremacy between the United States and China, and conflicts between South and North Korea and between China and Taiwan continue as the Korean Peninsula is an area with a high possibility of military conflict. However, even in North Korea, China, and Russia, which are closed countries, the influence of the soft power of cultural content such as dramas through the Internet is bringing about changes in collective sentiment even in closed countries. Due to these phenomena, Northeast Asia, which has been confronted with military power, is facing a new phase, and we wanted to discuss the use of AI technology in information warfare by the soft power of the Intelligence Agency. Method: For the expansion of AI use and research on information warfare, the historical cases of Northeast Asia were analyzed, and the evolution of literature and media was reviewed to understand the phenomenon of artificial intelligence (AI) after the 4th industrial revolution, and the themes were selected. In addition, related data were collected and reviewed, and an attempt was made to theoretically establish the research results academically. Results: 1. Northeast Asia is undergoing a transition from order based on hard power through military power to soft power based on cultural content. Just as the spread of culture has expanded faster and deeper the more it is controlled by the state, many researchers in Northeast Asia sympathize with the collapse of the system when asked how long such surveillance and control by dictatorships such as China and North Korea will be possible. According to this phenomenon, the influence of the power of culture on society was analyzed. 2. Artificial intelligence (AI) learning information will adversely affect sound soft power due to manipulated information and biased algorithm learning data. Due to this loophole, the Intelligence Agency will launch an information war using artificial intelligence (AI) technology that suits its own interests. In addition, the Internet will accelerate the propagation speed of distorted soft power and penetrate deeply into human life. Therefore, the Intelligence Agency is expected to analyze the influence of this distorted soft power on its country and start blocking and defending against attacks. Conclusion: 1. The legal system before the advent of AI is expected to be modified or supplemented by more than 50% after the advent of AI. In accordance with this paradigm shift, the authority of the Intelligence Agency in the information warfare of AI was divided into the right to investigate, the right to investigate, and the right to operate. 2. In response to the threat of using artificial intelligence (AI) in information warfare, the government of the country not only expanded the size of the Intelligence Agency but also proposed a hybrid structure of cooperation with the private sector, that is, a model of ‘hybrid defense’. Lastly, in 1983, when tensions between the US and the Soviet Union were in the Cold War, the state-of-the-art scientific equipment, a satellite for detecting nuclear missiles, recognized the US ICBM launch warning. In response, Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov, commander of the Watch Command of the Soviet Air Defense Force, determined through human intuition that this was a computer error. It reexamined the case of preventing World War III by judging computer errors through human intuition, not judgment of scientific equipment, and suggested ethical issues in information warfare.

Abstract (sommario):
During the winter of 2011-2012, Weardale, England, was the setting for an ambitious informal adult education project. In this rural area in the northeast part of the country, the local arts collective, Jack Drum Arts, established a community play project entitled The Bonny Moorhen. This dramatic undertaking aimed to retell the story of the infamous Battle of Stanhope, a local lead miners’ uprising. The project took place in a converted barn and involved a group of sixty learners of all ages and from all walks of life. The troupe formed the choir, band, backstage crew, and company of actors who, with the support of professional artists, built a temporary theater space. Each member of this collective made a personal journey. Here Helen Mills and Alan Anderson, in association with Julie Ward, cofounder and project producer at Jack Drum Arts, offer their personal testimonies from the project.

Abstract (sommario):
The relevance of the topic is due to the fact that in modern conditions the relevance of the topic is due to the fact that in modern conditions the role and importance of patriotic education of the younger generation is increasing. Youth is the future of the country and is the barometer of society. The processes that are taking place in the country and around the world are confirmation that young people want to actively participate in the political life of the country, increasing its rating in the international arena. And in this case, history presents an example of the service of faith and truth to the Russian state by Empress Catherine the Great, who set the main goal to revive the power of the Russian Empire and improve the life of the country’s population. Ekaterina, upon taking office, was engaged in reforming the system of public administration, carrying out customs and monetary reforms, increasing the territory of the Russian state, increasing the population of the country, actively counteracting bribery, educating the younger generation, preparing “a new breed or new fathers and mothers, morally perfect”.

Abstract (sommario):
In this article, we consider how girls are positioned in school by what we have chosen to call the discourse of drama. The widely held notion that Nordic girls have it all along with this drama discourse are seen to be the key narratives that reinforce a hegemonic form of girlhood. This ethnographic study focuses on the relations of students between the ages of 13 and 15 in the light of uninformed school staff-member practices. Our findings suggest that girls, despite living in what is seen to be a country that upholds gender equality, are silenced through this discourse of drama. We suggest that teacher education should lead to the facilitation of a gender-inclusive school environment free of stereotypical ideas of gender as a fixed binary.

Abstract (sommario):
Mark Veniaminovich Karminskyi (1930–1995) is a composer who, already during his lifetime, was appreciated by his contemporaries as the brightest figure in musical art, in particular, musical theater. Well-known in the country and his native Kharkiv, he was also the constant reader of the Kharkiv ‘K. Stanislavskyi’ Music and Theater Library for many years, taking part in many events that took place within its walls. An excellent lecturer and interlocutor, benevolent and affable person, he found an attentive audience and ardent admirers of his musical talent among the library’s readers and stuff. Perhaps, this is why M. Karminskyi chose the Library as the main curator of his archive. What is better than studying the artist’s personal archive to give an idea of his personality, creative methods and worldview? Even a cursory glance at the collection of documents classified on the shelves of the archive, illustrating particular biographical episodes, helps the researcher to form a holistic impression of the artist’s creative personality, as well as to orient, if necessary, for further more depth studying of his heritage. The purpose of this article is a brief review of the general content of the archival fund of M. V. Karminskyi, with the materials of which the author had the honor to conduct research and bibliographic work, as of a documentary sources base for future research of the composer’s work and the history of the musical culture of Kharkiv in 1950–2000 years. Statement of the main positions of the publication. The composer began to transfer his archive to the library during his lifetime: he arranged folders with manuscripts, gave explanations about the time of writing and purpose of individual works. It was this archive that was the first to get into the library as a full-fledged array of documents about the life of a creative person. The condition for its transfer was the possibility of unimpeded viewing of the archive and its copying for the purpose of training and concert performance of the composer’s works. The full description of M. Karminskyi’s archive was completed in 1996, but the fund was supplemented several times thanks to new materials that came to the archival collection after its formation. It contains a variety of documents, including musical manuscripts, newspaper clippings, photographic documents, sound recordings on various media, posters, booklets, programs, manuscripts by other authors related to the activities of the composer. Thus, for the theater – opera, drama – the composer has been actively working since a young age. He wrote music for performances of Kharkiv theaters – Puppet Theater, Young Audience Theater, Ukrainian Drama Theater named after Taras Shevchenko, Jewish Theater, even for student amateur theaters. Four operas by M. Karminskyi, among them – “Ten days that shook the world”, “Irkutsk story” – were successfully staged in many theaters in Ukraine, Russia, the Czech Republic and Germany. Particular attention was drawn to the opera “Ten Days That Shook the World” based on John Reed’s book about the events in Petrograd in 1917, which was published as the separate piano reduction and received a large number of reviews in periodicals. The typewritten copies of reviews by famous Ukrainian musicologists K. Heivandova and I. Zolotovytska have been preserved in the archive. The collection of the archive also includes the published piano score of the opera “Irkutsk story”, the known “Waltz” from which served as a call sign of the Kharkiv Regional Radio for many years. One of the most interesting manuscripts of the archive is the music for the unfinished ballet “Rembrandt” on the libretto by V. Dubrovskyi. The musical “Robin Hood”, which was performed not only in Kharkiv, but also in Moscow, brought the composer national fame. The sound recording of the Moscow play was distributed thanks to the release of gramophone records created with the participation of stars of Soviet stage – the singers Joseph Kobzon, Lev Leshchenko, Valentina Tolkunova and the famous actor Eugene Leonov. The popularity of this musical was phenomenal; excerpts from it were performed even in children’s music schools, as evidenced by the archival documents. During the composer’s life and after his death, his vocal and choral works, works for various instruments were mostly published. The array of these musical editions and manuscripts of M. Karminskyi is arranged in the archive by musical genres. These are piano pieces and other instrumental works, among them is one of the most popular opuses of the composer – “Jewish Prayer” for solo violin (the first performer – Honored Artist of Ukraine Hryhoriy Kuperman). Number a large of publications about the life and career of M. Karminskyi published in books and periodicals are collected, among them are K. Heivandova’s book (1981) “Mark Karminskyi”, the brief collection of memoirs about the composer (compiler – H. Hansburg, 2000) and the congregation of booklets of various festivals and competitions, for example, the booklets of the International Music Festival “Kharkiv Assemblies”, in which the composer has participated since the day of their founding. The booklet of the M. Karminskyi Choral Music Festival testifies to a unique phenomenon in the musical life of the city: never before or since has such a large-scale event dedicated to the work of a single person taken place attracting so many choirs from all Ukraine. A separate array of documents is the photo archive, which includes 136 portraits, photos from various events; 41 of them were donated by a famous Kharkiv photographer Yu. L. Shcherbinin. The audio-video archive of M. V. Karminskyi consists of records of his works, released by the company “Melody”: staging of performances “Robin Hood”, “There are musketeers!” (based on the play by M. Svetlov “20 years later”), various songs, video and tape cassettes with recordings of concerts. Other interesting documents have been preserved, for example, a typewritten script for the Kharkiv TV program about M. Karminskyi with his own participation or the library form, which can be used to trace his preferences as a reader. M. Karminskyi also compiled reviews of publications on the performance of his works and short bibliographic descriptions of their print editions. Conclusions. M. Karminskyi’s personal archive founded by him own in Kharkiv ‘K. S. Stanislavskyi’ Music and Theater Library has been functioning as an independent library fund since 1996 and today it is an unique comprehensive ordered collection, which is freely available and stores documents of various types: music publications and manuscripts, newspaper and magazine fragments, announces, photos, sound and video documents. M. Karminskyi’s archival fund is used as a documentary source for scientific researches (the Candidate’s dissertations of art critics Yu. Ivanova (2001) and E. Kushchova (2004) were defended using the materials of the archive) and as a basic congregation of works by the composer for their performance. The use of digital technologies is part of the necessary modern perspective of the fund’s development, the value of which as a primary source of historical and cultural information only grows over time.

Abstract (sommario):
The article presents the analysis of social integration factors of the country folk, living in four rural areas in Belgorod region (Russia). The study had two stages and included quantitative as well as qualitative research methods: first of all, the survey (n = 715) of country people aged 18–70 in order to explore the specific features of their social integration process; secondly, the expert survey (n = 23) devoted to study the activities of main social agents, managing regional social policy and including government and non-government organizations. As a result, the main factors, influencing the effectiveness of social integration of the country folk have been identified: 1) the maintenance of traditions and an active participation in rural community's life; 2) the infrastructure's development and the transportation accessibility; 3) the economy's type; 4) the type of settlement (town, village); 5) the degree of trust in local authorities and the assessment of local social services' activities. It is essential to take into account that the current processes of social integration of the country people, on the one hand, are due to the consequences of urbanization as a world trend and, on the other hand, it is due to the influence of a new, reverse process of de-urbanization. The results of the study conclude that current state social policy should be more effective to bridge the gap between the social conditions of people living in cities and rural areas, especially with regard to the access to education, health and social services, transportation, employment, etc. The improvement of quality of life of villagers allows to revive the most of rural settlements and attract youth to village.

Abstract (sommario):
The life quality is a fundamental characteristic by which it is possible to assess the level of socio-economic development of the territory for which it is assessed. The main purpose of the study is to assess the key socio-economic parameters that affect the life quality in Russia. Methods of system analysis, classification and generalization were used in the study. The analysis of the main macroeconomic indicators affecting the quality of life in our country, such as gross domestic product, inflation rate, unemployment rate, the volume of credit resources issued, household consumption expenditures, is carried out. The main trends of their changes are revealed. The article convincingly shows that the life quality is formed under the influence of external and internal factors, which together reflect the living standard state of the population (material well-being, consumption of goods). The values of the vast majority of key factors affecting the life quality of Russian population have negative dynamics. To change the situation, it is necessary to develop a comprehensive system of measures, where the key role is assigned to state regulation, which actively responds to the transformations taking place in the socio-economic environment.

Abstract (sommario):
Such a phenomenon as the path-dependence problem occupies a special place in the institutional theory, like a kind of institutional trap which a society or a country has fallen, and inertially continues to follow this path. We very often hear about “Russia's special path”, about its peculiarities determined by historical, cultural and geographical peculiarities, but does this path really exist and isn't its “specialty” a trap itself? Or, on the contrary, our path-dependence consists in the fact that, realizing our own characteristics and capabilities, we have not realized our “life plan”? According to one of the greatest philosophers of the 20th century – John Bordley Rawls, the feeling of successful implementation of a life plan is happiness, in terms of which Russia ranks 80th after Turkmenistan and Northern Cyprus. This article is devoted to finding answers to these questions and identifying those features of our country that distinguish us from other countries, but at the same time do not allow us to realize ourselves to the extent that is potentially possible. The study identifies the main characteristics of the cultural code of our country, which determine both our unique capabilities and factors that lead to a slowdown in potential economic development.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to the analysis of the socio-cultural perception of Russia and Japan as an image of the “other” in British society in the early 60s of the 19th century. Unlike previous studies of this problem, the source base was the publications of a number of British periodical journals. The choice of Russia and Japan as objects of study is due to the fact that both countries were perceived by English contemporaries as Asian countries with an Asian mentality of their population. However, Russia was also perceived as a Slavic country. In this regard, conducting a fragmentary cross-section of country studies within the framework of the British socio-cultural perception of Japan and Russia may be of interest both for understanding the relationship of Great Britain with these states, and for clarifying the Middle Victorian mentality as such. The article emphasizes that the criteria for the authors’ coverage of the events in Japan and Russia and the life of their peoples were different. With regard to Japan, the articles described not only its state system and the political situation in the country, but considerable attention was paid to Japanese nature, architecture, commerce, everyday life and culture of the Japanese. As for the Russian subjects, the materials were mainly devoted to the domestic and foreign policy of Russia since the beginning of the reign of Alexander II with a constant excursion into the history of the country. In this article, conclusions were drawn that British magazines, creating “Russian” and “Japanese” images, proceeded from the presence of the so-called “Japanese myth”, on the one hand, and on the other hand, from the prevailing stereotypical perception of the Russian people, thereby distorting the real picture of Russia and Japan in the early 60s of the 19th century.

The issues of the country’s transition to peaceful life after the end of the Civil War and how this affected population dynamics are considered. In conditions of mitigation of exogenous factors, mortality, including child mortality, has decreased in the country, and life expectancy has increased. The global consequence of positive changes in the 1920s was natural population growth. The author studies the peculiarities of the administrative-territorial division of Russia, which experienced several reforms during these years (“economic zoning”). Abstract (sommario):
Assessing the effectiveness of health care expenditure is a major economic task. The most important indicator to assess the effectiveness of health care costs is the expected life expectancy (ELE). Infant mortality is also closely related to DLE. The article substantiates the logarithmic model of the dependence of ELE from health care expenditure (per person for a particular year). Each country is represented by a point on the coordinate plane with an ordinate equal to the ELE in this country and an abscissa equal to the health care expenditure in it. The modeling logarithmic curve is taken as the theoret-ical threshold of the cost-effectiveness: the higher the curve is the point repre-senting the country, the more effective the health care costs in this country, and the lower the threshold curve, the costs are more unprofitable. It is shown that the dependence of ELE from GDP (or GRP by regions of Russia) is not so obvious: although there is a tendency to such a dependence, but with a large number of drop-out values. Despite the achievement of the highest average expected life expectancy in Russia in the country's history, it is significantly lower than in developed countries. The main causes of low expected life expectancy at birth are unsatisfactory health indicators, and as a result, high incidence and disability. Traumatism on the roads and suicides are one of the significant reasons for the low expected life expectancy in Russia and are significantly higher than similar indicators in other countries. The article shows the close correlation between the cost of health care per person and expected life expectancy. However, in the Russian Federation, the share of public expenditure in the structure of aggregate health expenditure is decreasing. Social insurance funds are more than half of the health care public expenditure. The author reveals considerable regional differences in health spending per person and average expected life expectancy. The article highlights the insufficient level of health care costs in Russia as a whole and in regions.

Abstract (sommario):
As an approach to move towards a sustainable waste management system, circular economy (CE) is gaining an increased interest by most countries. Russia is among the countries where the CE is one of the priorities of the country’s economy, with a market value of the CE is USD$ 755.05 billion. However, such a strategy is facing challenges and barriers which are country specific. This study aimed to review the status of the CE in Russia and to identify the obstacles that are hindering the country from achieving its objectives. Moreover, the study aimed to evaluate the role of eco-industrial parks (EIP) in Russia in promoting the CE model. The study findings indicate that the CE adoption in Russia is still in its early stages. To create an enabling environment for CE promotion in Russia, there is a need to overcome several institutional, technical, and social barriers. Russian higher educational institutions are playing a major role to create the critical mass of experts that will help the country transition towards a CE model. Using life cycle assessment (LCA) to analyze the environmental performance of one of the EIPs in Russia revealed that such enterprises are more sustainable than the business-as-usual scenarios, under which the generated solid waste is buried into landfill. The comparison shows that by diverting 1.813 million tons of mixed municipal solid waste that is generated in Moscow to EIP would lead to a reduction in environmental impacts. The total global warming potential of the EIP scenario is less, by 59%, than the direct landfilling scenario, while the eutrophication, acidification, smog, and ozone depletion are less, and fossil fuel depletion impacts under the second scenario are less, by 81%, 26%, 18%, and 81%, respectively. Furthermore, the health impacts including carcinogenic, non-carcinogenic, eco-toxicity were found to be 92%, 96%, and 96%, respectively, less than the baseline scenario.

Peter I started in Russia in fact a specific type of caesaristic democracy based on the direct connection of the nation-wide and military leader who had mass support of lower social classes. And he established the so-called “spirit of Peter” – the tradition of projected breaking through that denies the external determinacy of transcendent and religious principles, and is ready to accept the challenge of “accomplishing the impossible”. It became the institution of tradition, a component part of culture and spiritual heritage. A military officer in the long run was always more respected in society than a clergyman or even a party functionary. The army became a kind of a patrimonial relic, a sort of family talisman. The favorite toy of the country and the people. The favorite toy of the American people is a carefully kept Winchester. Even if it is never put to use. Our people prefer the country army as the favorite toy, – even if it is rarely put to use. The army was largely viewed not only as defender from enemy without, but also as defender from the country government arbitrariness. A well-known saying “Those who don’t want to provide for the country army, will have to provide for the enemy one”, – has its analogue. Those who don’t want to accept the personal power limitations imposed by the constitutionally elected parliament, will have to accept the limitations enforced by the soldiers of the Guards regiments.

Abstract (sommario):
Russia is at a crossroads in the global world. Century-long attempts to merge with Western civilization, started in the era of Peter the Great and turned into the mainstream of our country at the end of the 20th century, ended in failure and complete disappointment in the chosen path, which predetermined the geopolitical drama of Russia at the turn of the century. At the same time, the European party of the geopolitical epic “Great Game” between the Anglo-Saxons (USA, Great Britain) and their partners and Russia continues, in which the latter remains essentially alone. In search of the “philosopher's stone”, Russia turns to the “global East”, but here the question arises of the compatibility of the national interests of the two countries, Russia and China, in the processes of global development. The uncertainty is also added by the fact that globalization, as a phenomenon of the universe, “loses energy”, which gradually leads to the defragmentation of the world space, that is, the transition from the global superiority of one power (USA) to the national power of two or more powers is clearly defined in the coordinates of dominance in the world. The slogan “Make America Great Again” from the perspective of national power is equally applicable to the United States, as well as to China and Russia, it is only necessary to determine the foundations of this greatness at the beginning of the journey (as sailors say, on the shore).

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The term “people's quality of life” has not been given any widespread explanation in the context of society digital transformation. There are six attributes specified to characterize digital component of people's quality of life. Basing on official statistics data, subindices for the corresponding data blocks were computed. A mixed method to estimate the digital component of people's quality of life was used. Also, the Russian index of digital component of people's quality of life was defined for the whole country and for its federal districts. The results of computations allowed to characterize the changes in subindices within blocks and in the integral index covering eight federal districts and in Russia in the whole for the period of 2015–2017. Positive dynamics of the Russian index of digital component of people's quality of life was revealed with some fluctuations for different federal districts.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper will study the satirical representation of the human condition under poverty and political oppression in Syria. People are sardonically presented as inferior to animals in four plays by the Syrian dramatist Mamdouh ʿUdwan: The Feudal Lord’s Dog, The Bitten Bitch, and The Ambassador’s Dog. With the knowledge of the pejorative connotations the Arabic language associates with the term “dog”, these plays can be considered as a poignant mockery of the situation in ʿUdwan’s world 1941-2004 and a prophetic extrapolation of the present abyss. Through textual analysis, this study will delineate people’s servility and the loss of integrity under local political oppression as communicated in the ironical mix-up between the death of the dog and that of the lord in The Feudal Lord’s Dog The sarcastic presentation of a pampered female dog publishing a newspaper column complaining of lack of emotional and sexual fulfillment contrasts wittily with the inadequacy of basic human rights afforded to the journalist, in The Bitten Bitch. Lastly, The Ambassador’s Dog cynically reverses the human-animal hierarchy, as it celebrates the superior quality of life enjoyed by dogs in an unnamed superpower country. The value of human life in Syria has plummeted to the extent that the dog sitter is happy to sacrifice his life to save a dog. This article will evaluate ʿUdwan’s satire of the status quo in his country and investigate whether it is a genuine means of communication to circumvent censorship, or alternatively, it is only a form of licensed criticism used as a valve of pseudo-freedom approved by an authoritarian government.

Abstract (sommario):
The relevance of the chosen topic is due to the fact that the problem of state management of the quality of lifeof the population in the country causes the need for some adjustment. This is due to the low standard of living of certain segments of the population than in the developed countries of the world. It is established that the population is decreasing every year due to unfavorable environmental and other living enoditims, as well as increased migration of residents to other states. Along with this, imported products occupy a significant niche in the country’s economy, especially dairy and meat products, which reduces the growth rate of agro — industrial organizations and the level of economic security of the country. Another problems is the insufficient development of infrastructure in the regions and the small number of modern domestic plants for the production of innovative, knowledge-intensive means of production. These problems reduce the quality of the country’s human potential and cause the need to increase state financial capital for the reproduction of high-tech technologies. The validity of the topic is also due to the low innovative level of production of the subjects of the country’s industries, a significant proportion of obsolete means of labor, which causes a high labor intensity of manufactured goods in comparison with developed countries. During this period, the quality of food products is regulated in Russia according by technical conditions, and therefore does not meet international requirements. The manufactured products are characterized by low competitiveness, which necessitates accelerated innovative development and the introduction of digitalization processes in specific industries.

Abstract (sommario):
The article aims at a multidimensional discussion of the little-explored topic of the dramatic content of the philosophical problems in the works of F.M. Dostoevsky (1821—1881). There is proved that it was this feature of creativity that made the writer, with his philosophy of life and sharp, dramatically effective plot and psychological collisions, the most desirable and very productive author for the Russian theater art.Polyphony, dialogism, combined with the features of the tragic genre, are the basis for numerous theatrical embodiments of novels and novellas by F.M. Dostoevsky. The intensity of the action in his works gave rise to the expressions “novel-drama” or “drama in a novel”, “novel-tragedy”, and in theatrical practice it created the ground for the transformation of moral and philosophical problems into active stage action. The article reveals the context of F.M. Dostoevsky’s works — the time and conditions for the emergence of novels and novellas, the problem field that united and separated him from the works of his predecessors and contemporaries, which is done on the basis of a brief description of several aspects of the philosophical-aesthetic and socio-moral systems. In this context, according to our concept, a special place is occupied by the idea that life in Russia is absurd and ridiculous, and the reflection of the absurd is the most important artistic paradigm. The article proves that the analyzed philosophy of F.M. Dostoevsky’s life received polar genre embodiments in the theater. Thus, the dramatic and melodramatic beginning was characteristic of the performances that had in their center the so-called little man. The article presents an understanding of the most remarkable performances of the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century: “The Idiot” by G. Tovstonogov, with a new trend of searching for a “positively beautiful” person, which had a significant impact on many theatrical experiences in Russia; “The Petersburg Dreams” by Yu. Zavadsky, as a unique experience for Soviet art of creating a tragic work in full accordance with the aesthetic characteristics of this genre; “And I Will Go, and I Will Go” by V. Fokin, as the last emotional outburst of the young generation of Soviet creators who thought in the moral and psychological parameters of F.M. Dostoevsky’s characters; “The Karamazovs” by K. Bogomolov — a postmodern experience of an absurdist reading of the multifaceted text of the classic. In the works of the writer and their theatrical embodiment, the article notes the signs of a carnival worldview, a combination of grotesque and subtle psychologism in the stage versions of F.M. Dostoevsky (in particular, when working with ironic and satirical texts, “Uncle’s Dream” and especially “The Village of Stepanchikovo”, where sympathy and negative connotations are integrated into a single artistic space). The article correlates the writer’s works existential interpretations by theatrical creators of the 20th and early 21st centuries with socially significant problems, life choices, and dramatic conflicts that characterize Dostoevsky’s philosophy.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper approaches Derzhavin’s poem To Evgenii. Life at Zvanka from three angles: 1. Its relation to Horace’s II epode Beatus ille…. 2. The contrasting backdrop which is established in the first stanzas of the poem: the imperial court of Saint-Petersburg. 3. A further backdrop of this kind, which is implicit in the poem: a contemporary disdain for gentry landowners. In the light of Peter I’s reforms, their lifestyle was perceived as a backward relic of medieval Russia. From this point of view, Derzhavin’s idealized picture of country life is not only a criticism of court life, but also a didactic attempt to bring the country gentry’s way of life into accord with contemporary Russian culture: Zvanka was supposed to serve as a model to emulate.

The Dominion Drama Festival functioned as Canada’s national theatre from its much heralded inception in 1932 until its controversial reorganization as a non-competitive festival in 1971. Its founder, His Excellency the Right Honourable the Earl of Bessborough, Governor-General of Canada, conceived of the DDF in order to stimulate Canada’s cultural life and to help unite its diverse regions into the semblance of a single nation. From the start the DDF, despite its intended populist appeal, had an aura of aristocratic privilege, and single-mindedly devoted itself to an etiquette of high culture to which its competing amateur groups across the country were meant to aspire – even if they didn’t always know why or how they ought to do so.

Abstract (sommario):
The development of the "green economy" in Russia is slow compared to other countries. Our country is dependent on raw materials. However, Russia can be called a leader in hydropower. More than two hundred river hydroelectric power plants generate up to 20% of all electricity. The world's only tidal power plant operates in the Murmansk Region, and there are five geothermal stations in the Far East. Solar energy is also used: installations operate in a dozen regions (the most powerful is in the Crimea). There are still few wind farms in Russia – only 16. In 2019, the national project "Ecology" was approved for five years. As part of its implementation, it is planned to eliminate unauthorized municipal landfills, reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere by 20% and "improve" the Volga and Baikal. This program also includes projects for the conservation of biological diversity and forests of Russia.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The aim of the article is to reveal some aspects state regulation of natural monopoly in Russia, which are of paramount importance in economic and social life of the country. The optimal path to reforming the monopolized industries is currently a very topical question for Russia. The Russian government requires studying the foreign experience in this field and adapting it to the Russian conditions. Almost complete lack of transparency in the pricing of natural monopolies is one of the most important problems in Russia. In this connection, against the background of almost uncontrolled corruption in the country, the decision to increase tariffs for practically all services provided by monopolists, irrespective of the world prices for energy resources, causes distrust and just censures. The inefficient management of the state corporation Gazprom, a significant reduction in taxes transferred to the state budget, has not, until now, been the subject of thorough audit and critical analysis by the relevant government agencies. The Ministry of Energy does not attempt to reform the gas industry, for example, in the likeness of Scandinavian countries, where surprising results have been achieved in the operation of numerous energy suppliers. The increase of tax revenues to the country’s budget and the improvement of the quality of life of the population depend on to the scope of reforms of the industry the state will carry out based on a combination of administrative and economic control measures. Methods of investigation used: analysis, synthesis, comparative analysis.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is based on sociological surveys conducted in spring 2017 and autumn 2020. It examines the intra-family relations of migrants who came to Russia from the post-Soviet countries (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine). Particular attention is paid to the study of the life of migrants and their relatives, who, as a result of various life circumstances, found themselves separated by state borders. Migration models of the foreigners moving to Russia with their families, including minor children, are considered as well. Based on the obtained data, it was revealed that transnational communication is retained to a greater extent by foreigners who initially do not plan to change their place of residence and permanently reside in Russia. This group of migrants is more involved in the life of the extended family in the country of origin. Among all groups of migrants, visitors from the countries of Central Asia stand out. They are the ones who most often come to Russia alone, while actively building social interaction with the family left at home (they regularly communicate via mobile, and send money back home or bring it themselves). Their purpose is to earn money for a higher standard of living in their country of origin. Whereas visitors who intend to stay in Russia permanently, more often live together with their close relatives and maintain less transnational contacts. However, it should be taken into account that migrants' plans for living in Russia may change depending on life situations, changing in turn the nature of transnational interaction. Migration to Russia with minor children is considered as a separate subject, since in these conditions, migrant parents and their children are forced to face certain difficulties (for example, the inclusion of children in the Russian education system, mastering the Russian language by children, etc.), that require significant material, physical and emotional costs.

The author of the article notes the cyclical changes in the spiritual life of the country and reflects on what ideological principles are in demand today in the Russian legal system.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is dedicated to R. M. Glière, a famous composer of the XXth century. One of the little- explored pages of his oeuvre is music for the drama theatre, which he periodically worked on throughout his life (1905–1956). At the moment, 15 scores are known to exist, many lost. Glière had a long and fruitful collaboration with Vl. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko and the music studio at the Moscow Art Theatre. Their first joint work on Aristophanes’ play “Lisistrata” was revolutionary and especially successful. The music material has hardly been preserved, it is difficult to get an idea of the performance from the surviving sketches. Indirect evidence of Glière’s masterwork is found in the published letters of Vl. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko and O. S. Bokshanskaya. This production is highly appreciated in the works devoted to the history of the theatre, but there is very little attention paid to music. The fate of the play “Lisistrata” by Aristophanes in Russia is interesting: editions, translations, repeated attempts at stage realisation, including in the recent past. The article provides a number of explanations for such popularity of “Lisistrata”. The production of Vl. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko is one of the best, the more surprising is the fact that Glière’s contribution to the development of drama theatre is underestimated, and the example of “Lysistrata” is especially indicative.
