Abstract (sommario):
A new cornulitid species Cornulites baranovi sp. nov. is described from the Ohesaare Formation (late Přidoli) of Saaremaa, Estonia. The new species exhibits straight to slightly curved tubes that expand moderately in diameter, a vesicular tube structure and strong annular crests and costae. In addition to C. baranovi sp. nov., Conchicolites sp. also occurs in the Ohesaare Formation. The diversity of cornulitids is low in the Přidoli of Estonia, but not lower than in the Silurian of Estonia in general. C. baranovi often forms a symbiotic association with the bryozoan Fistulipora. It is not sure whether sealing off one cornulitid specimen by host bryozoan was a result of space competition or a post- mortem overgrowth. Specimens of C. baranovi also occur as solitary encrusters and aggregative encrusters in the Ohesaare Formation. C. baranovi presumably represents ecological generalists among the Silurian tentaculitoid tubeworms.

Abstract (sommario):
Conoidal shells of Cornulites celatus n. sp. occur commonly within host coralla of Propora conferta Milne-Edwards and Haime, 1851, sensu lato, from the Laframboise Member of the Ellis Bay Formation (Ashgill: Upper Ordovician) at Pointe Laframboise on western Anticosti Island. Examples have also been found at the same locality in the tabulate corals Paleofavosites sp., Acidolites arctatus Dixon, 1986, and A. compactus Dixon, 1986, and the stromatoporoid Ecclimadictyon sp., but not in other associated tabulate coral species. Growth interference between the shells and their hosts indicates a commensal relationship. C.celatus apparently had a more limited paleoenvironmental range than its principal coral host species, which occurs abundantly elsewhere on the island without its endobiotic partner. The diagnosis of Cornulites is emended to include forms having a two-layered shell wall with a distinctive outer layer consistently preserved as prismatic calcite. This new species extends the known stratigraphic range of cornulitids in commensal relationships with corals and stromatoporoids from the Silurian back to the Upper Ordovician.

Abstract (sommario):
The Wenlockian lichid trilobite Arctinurus boltoni has been regarded as a classic example of a “snow-shoe” type adaptation. That is, the broad flat doublure has been interpreted as a resting surface, with well-developed terrace ridges serving as either sensory or frictional devices. New data from the Rochester Shale of western New York State indicate that this interpretation is incorrect The discovery of the small, calcareous worm tube Cornulites on complete, articulated specimens of Arctinurus indicates that these trilobites seldom rested their doublure on the sediment surface. Apertures of all specimens of Cornulites are oriented posteriorly, suggesting a rheophilic response to persistent water circulation patterns beneath the trilobite. The presence of suspension feeding organisms on the doublure also indicates that the water currents beneath the trilobite were free of suspended mud, so that Arctinurus may not have processed sediment in search of food.Large specimens of Arctinurus also have numerous epibionts on the dorsal shield, including cyclostome bryozoans, brachiopods (Stegerhynchus) and Cornulites. The presence of these suspension feeders indicates that Arctinurus did not burrow or even partially cover itself with mud. The large number of epibionts on adult specimens of Arctinurus, including several age classes for Stegerhynchus, indicates that molting stopped or at least slowed greatly once a certain size was attained, and that these trilobites may have had fairly long life spans.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Superbly preserved specimens of Eucalyptocrinites tuberculatus from the Waldron Shale (Silurian, Wenlockian) of Indiana have been found with epibionts attached in living position to their stems. The rhynchonellid brachiopod Stegerhynchus indianense, the tabulate coral Favosites forbesi, the annelids? Spirorbis and Cornulites, bryozoans, and rarely the ichnogenus Tremichnus utilized living crinoids as secondary tiering surfaces. Crinozoans also attached to upright crinoid columns, and their holdfasts are the most abundant epibionts on pluricolumnals. Eucalyptocrinites crassus individuals contributed to the success of their epibionts by providing stable attachment surfaces elevated up to one meter above the sediment-water interface. Although crinoid-epibiont relationships are frequently blurred by taphonomic processes, articulated crinoid specimens and encrusters on pluricolumnals suggest that secondary tiering was a significant paleoecological element in the Waldron Shale.

Abstract (sommario):
In situ colonies of Bulmanicrusta? sp. encrusting the surface of a hardground from the Upper Ordovician Bull Fork Formation provide the first glimpse of the full colony form, habitat, and faunal associates of a crustoid graptolite. Bulmanicrusta? sp. exhibits a runner-type colony form suited to rapid expansion over hard substrates, indicating it was an opportunistic member of the hardground community. This community also included two bryozoans (“Proboscina” and Amplexopora), Cornulites, and crinoids. The Bulmanicrusta? sp. specimens contain numerous graptoblasts (small, thick-walled vesicles) in organic connection with the colony. These objects are located at branch termini and confirm that graptoblasts were not pathological features, but probably were resting cysts produced by the crustoid colony as a normal part of its life cycle. Thus, the presence of graptoblasts supports the interpretation that the Caesar Creek crustoid was adapted to ephemeral or disturbance-prone environments.

Abstract (sommario):
Commensal epizoozoans and episkeletozoans are rarely preserved attached to the external exoskeleton of the Late Ordovician trilobite Flexicalymene. Of nearly 15,000 Flexicalymene specimens examined, 0.1% show epizoozoans or episkeletozoans. Factors limiting Flexicalymene fouling include a shallow burrowing life style, frequent molting of the host, larval preference for other substrates, observational bias caused by overlooking small fouling organisms, and the loss of the non-calcified, outermost cuticle prior to fossilization or as the trilobite weathers from the encasing sediment. Trepostome bryozoans, articulate and inarticulate brachiopods, cornulitids, and a tube-dwelling/boring nonbiomineralized organism represent the preserved members of the Late Ordovician marine hard substrate community fouling Flexicalymene. This assemblage of organisms is less diverse than the hard substrate community fouling Late Ordovician sessile epibenthic organisms. Fouling is not restricted to only large Flexicalymene specimens as observed in previous studies but occurs in medium to large individuals interpreted as early to late holaspid specimens.Epizoozoans fouling the carcasses or molt ensembles of 16 Flexicalymene specimens provide insight into the life habits of the host and these fouling organisms. Trepostome bryozoans, articulate and inarticulate brachiopods, and cornulitids preferentially attached to elevated portions of the dorsal exoskeleton, and preferentially aligned in either the direct line or lee side of currents generated by Flexicalymene walking on the sea floor or swimming through the water column.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractA space X is said to be Lipschitz 1-connected if every Lipschitz loop 𝛾 : S 1 → X bounds a O (Lip(𝛾))-Lipschitz disk f : D 2 → X. A Lipschitz 1-connected space admits a quadratic isoperimetric inequality, but it is unknown whether the converse is true. Cornulier and Tessera showed that certain solvable Lie groups have quadratic isoperimetric inequalities, and we extend their result to show that these groups are Lipschitz 1-connected.

Abstract (sommario):
Large-scale sublinearly Lipschitz maps have been introduced by Yves Cornulier in order to precisely state his theorems about asymptotic cones of Lie groups. In particular, Sublinearly bi-Lipschitz Equivalences (SBE) are a weak variant of quasi-isometries, with the only requirement of still inducing bi-Lipschitz maps at the level of asymptotic cones. We focus here on hyperbolic metric spaces and study properties of boundary extensions of SBEs, reminiscent of quasi-Möbius (or quasisymmetric) mappings. We give a dimensional invariant of the boundary that allows to distinguish hyperbolic symmetric spaces up to SBE, answering a question of Druţu.

Abstract (sommario):
The difficulties in classifying family names such as dad, mum, uncle, son, etc., as proper names or common names take on a new dimension if we integrate certain uses of undetermined common names such as baby (ex: If mom is okay, baby is okay). The main objective of this article is to use these examples to bring about some changes in the theories of proper names and common names. Starting from Alan Gardiner’s proposal, which gives a central role to proper names’ signifiers, and adding the concept of “validity sphere” inspired by Benoît de Cornulier, this work lays the foundations of a unified description.

Abstract (sommario):
This article provides the reader with a survey of the basic metrical and prosodic properties of the French classical and post-classical 12-syllable alexandrine line. It is argued that these features can be captured within a neo-Jakobsonian framework which maintains a clear distinction between linguistic and non-linguistic parallelisms. Metrical equivalence is accounted for by positing abstract “line designs” that are linked to “line instances” by a set of “matching rules.” The versification of Racine, Hugo, and late Nineteenth-century poets of the Parnassian and post-Parnassian generations is studied in some details. This makes it possible to evaluate the adequacy of recent theorizing by Benoit de Cornulier and Paul Verluyten.

Abstract (sommario):
A single specimen of the large Silurian gastropod Phanerotrema sp. from the Goéland Member on Anticosti Island preserves an outstanding microcosm of its surrounding community, including multiple trophic groups, strategies for niche partitioning, and innovative adaptations for survival in a mud-dominated marine ecosystem. At least seven associations are recorded in this fossil specimen, including the gastropod itself, healed breakage from an apparently failed attempt at durophagous predation, domichnial bioerosion, encrustation by a stromatoporoid, nestling behaviour and commensal embedment by a lingulid brachiopod, and epifaunal attachment by two cornulitids. As a benthic island, the gastropod conch provided a favourable isolated habitat for hard substrate colonizers. This unique specimen sheds light on the broader Paleozoic ecosystem, including the potential importance of benthic islands in the evolution of niche-partitioning strategies in space-limited communities.

Abstract (sommario):
Summary The notion ‘delocutive derivation’ was introduced by Emile Benveniste (1902–1976) in a paper published in 1958. It appears to have gone unnoticed at the time. However, when the article was reissued in Benveniste’s Problèmes de linguistique générale (1966), things seem to have changed dramatically, in particular in 1972, when Ducrot made a connection between ‘delocutivity’ and ‘performativity’ (e.g., promettre = dire je promets), leading in 1975 delocutivity back to the side of a semantic reinterpretation (e.g., je trouve que). Subsequently, Cornulier (1976) introduced the concept of ‘autodelocutivity’ and Anscombre, in a series of articles from the late 1970s and early 1980s, attempted a theorization of this notion. Since then, the subject fell into oblivion. The object of the present paper is twofold: (1) It tries to understand the cometic rise of a notion on the linguistic horizon; (2) to demonstrate that notion ‘delocutive derivation’ is a fundamental mechanism that linguistics, both synchronic and diachronic, would make a mistake in ignoring, to the effect that its ‘enunciative’ specificity does not mask a much more general mechanism, namely, that of natural metalanguage, and beyond, that of metonymy.

Abstract (sommario):
Stromatoporoids from the Brassfield Formation (Early Silurian, Llandovery) near Fairborn, Ohio, provided substrata for a diverse epizoic community. The stromatoporoids were colonized by at least 28 taxa, including bryozoans, cnidarians, echinoderms, annelids, and endolithic organisms. Analysis of the occurrence, diversity, distribution, and coverage of the epizoans recognized patterns of site-selective attachment on the surface of the stromatoporoids. The upper surface of the stromatoporoids had a slightly higher total epizoan coverage than the lower surface. Concentric zones outlined from the margin also had differences in area and percent coverage. On the upper and lower surfaces, epizoan occurrence decreased from the margin to the interior. Epizoan coverage for the lower surface also decreased inward. On the upper surface, the middle zone had the highest coverage followed by the outer and polar zones, respectively. Among the major invertebrate phyla, only the echinoderms were randomly distributed. Bryozoans, cnidarians, and miscellaneous taxa including borers, cornulitids, and spirorbids were distributed nonrandomly on the surface of the stromatoporoids.Over 95 percent of the stromatoporoid area analyzed is not covered by epizoans. However, epizoans are commonly clumped or in direct contact with one another. These physical interactions are the result of site-selective attachment by epizoans in close proximity rather than competition for available space.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Arleo, Β.

Abstract (sommario):
Shell-encrusting assemblages have uniquely high ecological fidelity among paleocommunities because adjacent epibionts coexisted in ecological time, and the abundances and spatial relationships of the various members are accurately preserved. This study presents a quantitative reconstruction of communities on brachiopod shells (Composita and alate spirifers) from the Carboniferous of North America. Thirty-one epibiont communities, comprised of a total of 1180 encrusted brachiopods, are analyzed in terms of epibiont abundance (e.g., percent areal cover), ecological diversity (e.g., Shannon-Wiener Index), and the role of larval recruitment and spatial competition in structuring the communities.Mississippian epibiont communities contain from seven to 14 encrusting taxa that occupy up to 25 percent of host shell surfaces. These communities are spatially dominated by trepostome bryozoans, but also include common lower Paleozoic epibionts, such as encrusting ctenostome bryozoans, hederellids, cornulitids, and edrioasteroids. Pennsylvanian epibiont communities contain between eight and 16 epizoan taxa that occupy up to 34 percent of shell surfaces. They are dominated by fistuliporoid or trepostome bryozoans and increasing proportions of erect bryozoans (e.g., fenestellids), encrusting foraminiferans, and articulate brachiopods.Carboniferous epibionts, like their modern counterparts, exist in loosely organized ecological communities that vary widely in abundance and composition in space and geological time. There is little evidence for tight controls on community structure. Much of the variation is attributed to vagaries in the magnitude and selective nature of larval recruitment. Evidence of competition between community members is rare, except where a high percentage of the shell surface is covered. In these cases, sheetlike bryozoans are usually most abundant. Solitary epibionts are surprisingly successful competitors in one-on-one encounters, but apparently lose areal cover to longer-lived colonial encrusters during ecological succession.

Abstract (sommario):
The article describes two groups of facies most widely represented in the collections of Lower Frasnian invertebrates of the Main Devonian Field in the Mining Museum (hardgrounds and pelecypod banks). The presence of three types of hardgrounds has been established, differing in the nature of the original bottom and the time of exposure of each hardground, and hence structural and textural features of rocks and systematic composition of oryctocenoses. The first type is crinoidal limestone with an extensive complex of sclerobionts and traces of bioerosion by Trypanites Mägdefrau, an uneven surface and a visually almost complete absence of impregnation. In hardgrounds of this type, three generations of sclerobionts are distinguished, namely: abiogenic substrates (first), incrustators of the remains of organisms of the first generation (second), and bioerosion organisms (third). The second type is micritic limestone with a smooth glass-type surface, a small complex of sclerobionts and traces of bioerosion by Trypanites Mägdefrau. The third type is pelecypod limestones with an uneven surface, isolated sclerobionts, numerous traces of bioerosion by Trypanites Mägdefrau and strong ferruginous impregnation. For the most widespread hardgrounds of the first type, the presence of specific taphofacies has been established, characterized by good preservation of organic remains of the first generation, an almost complete absence of organic remains of the second generation, and a complete absence of bioerodible organisms. The appearance of such taphofacies is due to the short exposure time of the hardground and the beginning of a rapid process of new accumulation immediately after the appearance of the first organisms of the second generation. The presence of such taphofacies emphasizes the importance of distinguishing taphofacies in certain paleofacies and certain types of oryctocenoses. In the oryctocenoses of pelecypod shells, three morphological and ethological types of cornulitids have been established. The most representative settlements of cornulithids were characteristic of calcareous clay soils with small areas of compacted bottom.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Seven species of cornulitids, one unidentified tubicolous shell, and the problematic bryozoan Lagenosypho Spandel, 1898 are here described from the Katian of Baltica. Three new species—Cornulites lindae new species, Cornulites meidlai new species, and Conchicolites kroegeri new species—are described. The unidentified tubicolous organism has punctate shell structure and setae-like structures that can best be affiliated with lophophorates. The Hirmuse fauna indicates that the diversity and number of cornulitids in the Ordovician of Baltica has been underestimated and it is likely that the Baltic cornulitid fauna was as diverse and abundant as the fauna of Laurentia. Clay mud-bottom environments supported the highest cornulitid diversity in the Late Ordovician of Baltica. The occurrence of intermediate forms indicates that some tentaculitid characters, e.g., regular annulation and a nearly straight shell, which were thought to be apomorphies of free-living tentaculitids, were actually inherited from ancestral cornulitids. The cornulitid fauna of the Late Ordovician of Laurentia somewhat resembles the cornulitid fauna of the Late Ordovician of Baltica, but there are fewer common faunal elements between Gondwana and Baltica. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract A new cornulitid genus and species, Porkuniconchus fragilis new genus and species, is here described from the Ärina Formation (Hirnantian, Porkuni Regional Stage) of northern Estonia. This new taxon differs from most cornulitids by having a fusiform ornamentation pattern that is somewhat similar to that of Kolihaia. All studied specimens are attached to a carbonate hardground. The hardground fauna is by abundance and encrustation area dominated by cornulitids. Other encrusters are represented only by a single sheet-like cystoporate bryozoan. The cornulitid specimens represent different growth stages, which suggest that the hardground was continuously colonized by cornulitid larvae. The high encrustation density indicates that the studied hardground may have represented a high-productivity site in the Hirnantian of the Baltic Basin. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The Upper Devonian sedimentary sequences of Central Armenia, which mainly consist of shallow water, mixed carbonate-siliciclastic deposits, contain abundant and diverse brachiopods that are dominated by spiriferides. Based on newly collected material from the lower Famennian Aramazdospirifer orbelianus brachiopod zone (coeval to the Palmatolepis crepida conodont zone) of Armenia, we here introduce two new cyrtospiriferid genera and fully document their type species, including their intraspecific variability. Pentagonospirifer n. gen. is a monospecific genus assigned to the subfamily Cyrtospiriferinae that is currently known only from the lower Famennian of Armenia; it is likely that its type species, P. abrahamyanae n. sp., evolved from the species Cyrtospirifer verneuili sensu Abrahamyan, known from the Frasnian and lower Famennian of Armenia. The second new genus, Tornatospirifer n. gen., is assigned to the subfamily Cyrtiopsinae and defined on the basis of one of the most biostratigraphically valuable cyrtospiriferid species, namely T. armenicus n. comb., described previously from the lower Famennian Aramazdospirifer orbelianus Zone of Armenia. It is likely that it evolved from a Frasnian ancestral stock of Tiocyrspis Sartenaer, known from northwestern Europe, which probably migrated during the early Frasnian to the north Gondwanan margin. A neotype is selected for Abrahamyan's species because the type material is lost. Epibionts (Cornulites, Hederella) attached to brachiopods are also documented for the first time from the Upper Devonian of Armenia. UUID: http://zoobank.org/923d232f-cd6a-48bb-8a05-27c689058b65.

Abstract (sommario):
The article considers sclerobionts on the shells of the Frasnian bivalves and brachiopods of the east of the Main Devonian field, as well as common traces of bioerosion of biogenic and abiogenic substrate. In contrast to the averaged data on the Frasnian brachiopod sclerobionts, which demonstrate a clear dominance of auloporids, craniform brachiopods, bryozoas and microconchids, microconchids predominate among Frasnian bivalves sclerobionts and brachiopods of the Main Devonian field and among the eroding sclerobionts — the ichnogenus Arachnostega Bertling. Next in the degree of frequency of occurrence are cornulitids, then auloporids and eroding sclerobionts of the ichnogenus Trypanites Mägdefrau. The ichnogenus Arachnostega Bertling was first identified in the Frasnian rocks of this region. Some Frasnian sclerobionts of the east of the Main Devonian field were inhabitants of a fairly wide range of conditions. For example, microconchida Palaeoconchus omphalodes (Goldf.) are found both on shells burrowing bivalves of inhabitants of soft muddy bottom, and on shells of various representatives of epifauna that lived in conditions of both firmground and hardground. Representatives of three different ethological groups have been identified in cornulitids — fully cemented to the substrate; with a raised anterior part and free-living, attached only at the juvenile stage. The maximum morphological and ethological diversity of cornulitids was recorded on the bivalves of the Main Devonian field from the Dubnik beds corresponding to the maximum of the Frasnian regression. The active development of cornulitids in the Dubnik time was probably favored by the lack of competition with other groups of organisms of similar ethology. A fairly wide range of morphological types of cornulitids isolated within one stratigraphic level indirectly confirms O. Vinn's hypothesis about cornulitids as a group of biological opportunists. The author proved for the first time the presence of two morphologically similar ichnogenera Trypanites Mägdefrau and Palaeosabella Clarke in the Frasnian rocks of the Main Devonian field.
