Abstract (sommario):
AbstractIn 1907, Sigmund Freud initiated the psychoanalytic psychology of religion, until the present day the most important contributor to the psychology of religion literature in general, and the branch of psychological critique of religion best known outside of psychology circles (having drawn attention from a multitude of philosophers, theologians and scholars on religion). One often reads that of the remarks made by Freud about religion would be, that it is a 'projection.' While not being original (the claim had been earlier articulated many times, from Greek philosophy until Feuerbach), it has been regarded as Freud's major contribution to the (psychological) critique of religion, especially in vulgarized psychoanalytic parlance. This paper reviews what has been stated about religion as projection by psychoanalysts and other scholars. Also correcting some common misreadings of Freud, the paper is especially inquiring whether and in which sense progress has been booked in the psychology of religion, touching briefly on some contemporary contributions to the field from neurobiology, cognitive science and evolutionary psychology.

Abstract (sommario):
Most texts in the history of psychology ignore American contributions prior to the appearance of Hall and James. This may be a function of the strong religious inclinations of the pre-Jamesians, but there is reason to believe their views were of significance to the later development of American psychology. The present article attempts to place the psychology of this time into historical-cultural context, and then explicate the nature of science during that period The paramount place of religion in this philosophical psychology is discussed Finally, the implications of these ideas for contemporary psychology are brought to the fore. The need for further attention to the work of these religious American philosopher-psychologists is emphasized.

Abstract (sommario):
Fowler's faith development theory is a relatively recent achievement in cognitive developmental psychology, based on the earlier work of Piaget and Kohlberg in cognitive and moral development, and is a significant contribution to the integration of theology and psychology. In this article, an attempt is made to acquaint the reader with (a) some major reasons for the scientific study of faith development, (b) a brief history of the contributions of theorists prior to Fowler, and (c) a basic understanding of faith development theory, in terms of the concepts and stages described by Fowler. In conclusion, several implications of Fowler's work for psychotherapists and religious educators are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In this publication the contributions made by the individual differences tradition of psychology over the past 50 years to research in religious education are reviewed and assessed. In this context religious education is conceived broadly to embrace what takes place in schools, within religious communities, and within households across the age span. The opening section roots the analysis within the tradition of developmental psychology and the research that flourished in the area of religious development during the 1960s. It is from these foundations that current interest in the individual differences approach emerges. Subsequent sections examine the centrality of the attitudinal dimension of religion, discuss the place of personality in the individual differences tradition, explore sex as a core individual difference in religion, map the correlates, antecedents and consequences of individual differences in religious affect or attitudes, review research into the distinctiveness and effectiveness of church schools and the family in religious nurture, identify the factors that account for individual differences in attitude toward religious diversity, explore the relevance of the individual differences tradition for adult religious education, and explore the implications of the individual differences tradition for biblical hermeneutics and discipleship learning.

The January 12th, 1991 U.S. Congress vote giving President Bush powers to initiate military operations against Iraq was analyzed with respect to personal and religious backgrounds of the voting Senators and Representatives. Aside from party affiliation, the outcome of the vote was significantly associated with religious affiliations of the members of Congress. These empirical findings are interpreted within the theoretical context of Santayana's hypothesis that the Catholic-Protestant schism is one of the determinants of the niveau of our society.

Abstract (sommario):
The current project asks the questions: Do “women's ways of knowing,” particularly women's ways of knowing God as evidenced in the literature on women's spirituality, imply that women have a unique contribution to make to the integration literature? Do feminine perspectives on integration provide a necessary ‘corrective’ to the largely theoretica literature? Based on a review of feminist contributions to theology, spirituality, philosophy, and psychology, it was hypothesized that female authors' contributions to the integration literature would emphasize practical, clinical, and experiential integration. A content analysis of the past ten years of integration articles in the Journal of Psychology and Theology and the Journal of Psychology and Christianity was conducted to examine the relationship between gender and type of integration. Significant variations in the frequency of male and female first authorship across types of integration were found. Gender differences in the frequency of interdisciplinary, intradisciplinary-clinical, and faith-praxis integration articles contributed most towards the variations: Female authors were more likely to author clinical and faith-praxis integration articles, and male authors were more likely to author interdisciplinary integration articles. Implications are explored regarding the benefits of including feminine thought as an integral partner in the task of integration and spiritual formation.

Abstract (sommario):
The present study examined how Evangelical Christian women’s marital satisfaction is related to religiosity (i.e., religious commitment and sanctification of marriage), role ideology, and role congruence. Societal messages surrounding roles in marriage tend to conflict with conservative Christian messages, and therefore Evangelical women likely experience unique tension while attempting to negotiate roles in their marriages. Two-hundred forty-nine Evangelical Christian women from across the United States were administered a survey containing a measure of religious commitment, two sanctification of marriage scales, a role ideology attitudinal scale, and a role congruence scale. The results indicated that greater levels of religious commitment and sanctification predicted marital satisfaction. Furthermore, sanctification predicted satisfaction above and beyond religious commitment. Women who demonstrated role congruence were found to be more satisfied with their marriages. More egalitarian women were found to experience greater role congruence, though role ideology was not significantly related to marital satisfaction. The Manifestation of God facet of sanctification moderated the relationships between both role ideology and religious commitment, and marital satisfaction. The findings from this study suggest that religion has important implications for the marital satisfaction of Evangelical women, both in itself and through its interaction with role-related variables.

Abstract (sommario):
This article is the Editors’ introduction to the second Journal of Psychology and Theology special issue on Psychology and Missions. It proposes some reasons for the uneasy acceptance by conservatives of an adjunctive or supportive role in missions by psychology and the other behavioral sciences. The extant literature on Psychology and Missions is unified by an underlying assumption that mission endeavor and its personnel are important issues for psychology and other behavioral sciences. The contributions to the literature from the Journal of Psychology and Theology's first two special issues on Psychology and Missions suggest that the area is still very broad in its approach and focus. A concerted and coordinated direction of research is required in future studies.

The argument of this research is; for developing future perspectives on psychology, religion can possibly provide historical and modern tools, as well as various other contributions. Within the scope of this research paper, the main idea and some other relevant arguments have been developed by evaluating historical facts and scientific analysis presented under the sub-sections of this essay, namely; psychology, beliefs and interdisciplinary connections, nonmaterial beliefs in cultural psychology, science and religion: a synergetic approach is possible, studying psychology and religion, psychology of religion, psychological benefits of religion, interpreting and utilizing new brain sciences of neurotheology and cognitive science. The conclusion briefly summarizes diverse understandings formed through the evaluation of these sub-sections. This research illustrates the coexistence of religious and scientific knowledge using the emergence of modern psychology. On the other hand, some arguments regarding the commercialization of research targets, the transformation of science into neoliberal market discourses leading to some kind of social Darwinism, or regarding some of the influences of some of the sponsors; some of the leaders; some of the foundations; some of the scientism ideologies; and various global agendas are shared to illustrate the necessity to be cautious.

Abstract (sommario):
A brief classification of a range of approaches to engaging Scripture in psychology is provided including one non-normative and three normative strategies (Bible as encyclopedia of revealed truths, Bible as a source of theological truths and values, and Bible as divine speech received by providentially situated readers). The implications of each of these for an integrative Christian psychology are discussed. Five issues are examined that require further development by Christians in psychology. If Scripture has authoritative priority then how might this authority concretely function in psychological science? What is the proper scope of Scripture with regard to psychology? What positive contributions to psychology are germinal within Scripture? Can Christian psychological scholarship contribute to Biblical hermeneutics? What improvements in integrative curriculum would facilitate greater attention to the Word of God in the discipline of psychology? These various issues present integrative challenges and callings for current and future generations of Christians in psychology.

Abstract (sommario):
Humans tend to be embedded in their prior communally-based understanding, by means of which they interpret the world. Postformal reasoning, promoted by dialogue with others, strives for a metasystemic understanding that incorporates the wisdom of multiple systems of thought. Intellectual majority-minority relations can inhibit postformal thought and dialogue by inclining majorities not to listen to minorities and inclining minorities to doubt themselves and their potential contributions. Principled pluralism is a political framework that promotes the contributions of minority communities. These assertions are explored with relation to psychologists and therapists within the Christian community and within the current field of psychology as a whole.

Abstract (sommario):
There are many creative ways to combine psychology with religious and spiritual beliefs, as shown in recent writings on the interface between Christianity and psychology (Johnson, 2010; Stevenson, Eck, & Hill, 2007). To help Christians with interests in psychology begin to discern where they might best fit within this larger integration movement, this brief article raises several practical questions. The questions focus on five areas: bases for truth claims, personal strengths and weaknesses, desired amount of uniformity in faith perspectives, wounds or negative past experiences, and sources of motivation and passion. These questions are presented in a personal style with the aim of encouraging self-reflection. By considering questions such as these, along with factors such as personality traits and seasons of life, Christians who are unsure of their place in the world of psychology may begin to identify areas where they could make distinctive and meaningful contributions.

Religious psychotherapy which works with religious issues and utilizes spiritual resources (e.g., prayer, Scriptures, referral to religious support groups, etc.) explicitly, has become an important part of contemporary approaches to psychotherapy. Religion is now recognized as a significant dimension of human diversity that needs to be respected and dealt with appropriately in psychotherapy. However, ethical considerations and controversial issues related to the practice of religious psychotherapy remain. They are discussed in this article both in terms of potential pitfalls or dangers, as well as unique resources or positive contributions of religious psychotherapy, which should be practiced in a clinically sensitive, ethically responsible, and professionally competent way.

Abstract (sommario):
Over the last three decades, research has established a strong link between attachment and well-being as well as social support and well-being. Past research found that attachment to church congregation predicted well-being over and above that predicted by attachment to God. However, it is unknown if attachment to church congregation predicts well-being over and above that predicted by social support. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if attachment to church congregation could explain a portion of the variance in negative affect, positive affect, satisfaction with life, and daily spiritual experiences, beyond that explained by religious social support and perceived social support. The data from 201 participants indicated that religious social support, perceived social support, and attachment to church congregation each predicted different aspects of well-being. Only negative affect was predicted by attachment to church congregation beyond that predicted by social support. More research is needed to better understand the relationship between attachment to church congregation, social support, and well-being.

Abstract (sommario):
The subject of the research is the approach of analytical psychology to understanding the content and meaning of mystical experience represented by religious and esoteric traditions. The purpose of the presented article is to reveal the content, directions and results of the conceptualization of religious-mystical experience within the framework of the psychological theory of religion characteristic of analytical psychology, as well as the justification of the universalist paradigm as the basis of this conceptualization. The authors consider in detail the mystical aspects of both analytical psychology itself and the psychological theory of religion formulated within its framework. Special attention is paid to the role of individual mystical and religious experiences of C.G. Jung himself as the empirical basis of this theory. The main conclusions are the theoretical provisions that, unlike religious studies, analytical psychology, involving theology and new religious movements in dialogue, aims to solve the practical problem of resolving the spiritual crisis of modernity on the basis of a new interpretation of mental health achieved with the help of appropriate psychoanalytic practices leading a person to revive his mystical experience, which has a syncretic and trans-confessional nature. A special contribution of the research is the substantiation of the position that the approach of analytical psychology to the phenomenon of religious-mystical experience correlates with the universalist paradigm in religious studies, according to which all mystical traditions, both religious and non-religious, contain certain invariants. A generalization is formulated according to which the result of the implementation of this kind of universalism on the part of analytical psychology was the erosion of the classical Christian mystical tradition, at least its Western Christian version, which led to the replacement of the latter with new mystical practices in line with new religious movements.

Abstract Islamic Religious Education is defined as guidance carried out by an adult to an educated person in his infancy so that he has a Muslim personality. In this case, the outline is Muslim personality, personality that is uswatun hasanah. Then, what if Islamic Education is viewed from the perspective of Psychology and Sufism? Psychology and Sufism which are sciences with their own character in viewing the concept of Islamic Education. By using a literature review approach, explore how Islamic Religious Education is in Psychology, as well as how Sufism is in Islamic Religious Education. These two research objects become another point of view in PAI. Abstract (sommario):
This article discusses contributions of Eastern philosophical traditions, in particular, Buddhism and its concept of mindfulness—to the field of psychology. Psychology has long dealt with the concept of mindfulness to understand the results of meditation in several contexts, such as psychotherapy and education. The works of Thich Nhat Hanh on meditation and mindfulness represent one of the theoretical pillars of this discussion. Recent research on mindfulness in the field of scientific psychology provides additional links for this collaborative effort between religious tradition and science. Research on this theme inevitably leads to considerations of the ethical, moral, environmental, ecological, emotional, and spiritual dimensions involved in Buddhist traditions and in different psychological theories. These traditions and theories converge to benefit persons undergoing situations of psychological and spiritual suffering. This article concludes by sharing new possibilities of comprehending the concept and practice of mindfulness, based on writings from the Buddhist tradition that focus on its phenomenon from a broader and deeper viewpoint.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper explores the scholarship and intellectual contribution of the second series of World Order magazine, which published from 1966 until 2008 over 38 volumes. In so doing, I provide a narrative overview of the main themes and papers in World Order, and by extension some of the topics being discussed in the worldwide Bahā’ī community. This is complemented by interviews with past World Order editors, who provided information on papers, topics and issues that generated the most interest and print runs, a listing of the number of pieces and articles by topic, and a questionnaire survey of those attending an academic Bahā’ī conference. I compare themes identified in the overview with contemporary discourses over a similar period drawing on surveys of textbook and journal contents in similar areas. In addition, I summarise available information on the most cited (from Google Scholar) and downloaded (from Bahā’ī Library online) World Order papers, and hence those contributions with the most impact using these quantitative approaches. I show that Abizadeh’s paper on ‘Ethnicity, Race, and a Possible Humanity’, which discusses how the concept of the oneness of humanity can potentially address racial problems, is the most cited paper, and Stokes’s paper on ‘The Story of Joseph in Five Religious Traditions’, a piece on comparative religion, is the most downloaded. Overall, the most cited and downloaded papers are indicative of the breadth of topics covered in World Order, with pieces on political philosophy, law, education, history, theology, and psychology. The number of articles and editorials on social issues, such as racial justice, women’s rights, and environmentalism, is one indication that the Bahā’ī community was at the forefront of thinking about social action.

Abstract (sommario):
Kohut's contributions toward the understanding of narcissistic development are briefly reviewed, then cast into a mode of theological inquiry that delineates his anthropology and soteriology, utilizing the initial sketch of these dimensions drawn by Randall (1980). Kohut's view of “Tragic Man” searching to fulfill the blueprint of the essential self in actualizing ideals and ambitions through healthy forms of narcissism, of humanity's fall from the realization of these ideals and the means of restoration, are integrated with the biblical account of the dilemma at the Fall, the consequent impact upon the human condition, and God's solution to this predicament.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
A detailed questionnaire was mailed to all institutions involved in the initial training of Christian ministers of religion within the United Kingdom. The 95 completed replies represent an 85% response rate. The data suggest that, although few full-time ministry educators possess a recognized qualification in psychology, the climate is generally favorable to psychology within programs of initial ministry training. The data also distinguish between four different levels on which psychology may contribute to such programs: areas given high priority in initial ministry training and in which psychology is already perceived as making an important contribution; areas given middle ranking priority and in which psychology is perceived as making an important contribution; areas to which psychology is seen as making a very positive contribution but which are perceived as being of little importance in initial ministry training; and areas given high priority but in which psychology is perceived as having little to offer. Suggestions are offered for the promotion of psychology on these different levels.

Abstract (sommario):
This research aims to examine the important role of the Islamic psychology approach in strengthening religious moderation in university students. The method used in this research is a literature study that involves analysis of various scientific references that discuss the topic of religious moderation and Islamic psychological approaches. The main references used come from journals and books that have been published by experts in this field. Data was collected through searches in various academic databases using certain keywords. Journal standards and year of publication are also taken into consideration in selecting references. From the literature review, the author identifies that the Islamic psychology approach can make a positive contribution to strengthening religious moderation in students. Students can overcome stress and increase self-resilience through the application of Islamic psychology principles. They can also develop themselves holistically by understanding the role of Islamic-based education in forming moderate character and personality. These findings indicate that the Islamic psychology approach has great potential to help college students strengthen religious moderation. The implication of these findings for education is the need to integrate Islamic psychology approaches into the university curriculum. This article concludes that by applying the principles of Islamic psychology, students can form a balanced character and personality and be able to face various life challenges with strong resilience. The implication is that this approach should be integrated into the higher education climate to form students who are moderate, competitive, and able to have a positive impact on society.

Member care has become a specialized discipline within missions, drawing on the contributions of Christian counseling and psychology, pastoral care, and human resource development. Much is happening in the international member care community, especially in North America and Europe. This article highlights some of the key developments that have shaped and are shaping this field. It also points out the need to develop and prioritize additional supportive resources for those working among unreached people groups and for agencies from the “Newer Sending Countries” (Asia, Africa, and Latin America). The article closes with five suggestions—“PACTS”— for further developing this crucial field, calling upon the various member care streams to purposefully join together on behalf of the missions community.

Abstract (sommario):
Whether the result of biology, the result of culture, or the interaction of both, modern research on gender concurs: men and women are different. This deceptively simple finding raises a series of interesting questions for work in the integration of psychology and theology. Do women think of integration differently than men? Does the impact of being a mother affect how women imagine integration? And is traditional integrative literature congenial with women's perceptions? If not, why aren't there more women writing on integration in ways that highlight their unique contributions? How are we to account for women's apparent silence when it comes to integration? The present study investigated these questions via exploratory qualitative research.

Abstract (sommario):
Consistent with social identity theory, political identity was strongly linked to conservative Christians’ morality represented by the Moral Foundation Theory model. Participants identifying as Democrats scored significantly higher than did those identifying as Republicans on the individualizing foundations of care and fairness but significantly lower than Republicans on the binding foundations of authority, loyalty, and purity. In addition, political identity differentially related to the two liberty subfoundations consistent with salient political party themes. Hierarchical regression analyses identified political identity as a consistent predictor of all moral foundations beyond the variance accounted for by unique contributions of gender and education. RS factors, primarily fundamentalism, contributed additional incremental value to predicting the three binding but not the individualizing foundations, which suggests a congruent dual identity (political, religious) for Republicans that does not hold for Democrats.

Abstract The presented paper focuses primarily on the tourism activities of teaching staff at universities and other research institutions. This applies in particular to travel during which the principal purpose is, inter alia, various exploratory internships, conferences, trips as a guest professor or a visiting professor under the auspices of the Erasmus and Erasmus Mundus programs. These peregrinations require extra effort, not only with regards to teaching and research duties, but also present opportunities to confront, test and evaluate one’s own research results and outlook with new listeners in new locations in different environments. This travel especially applies to the foreign environment, a situation that presents high degrees of professional, scientific and linguistic challenges, resulting in increased contributions and activity to the specific field of science. Regardless of the workload and the difficulties of the discussed travel, such travel can also bring about much personal satisfaction: a) due to a sense of a well done job as a result of meeting expectations of the employer and the host placed on the 'messenger of science' and b) due to the pleasure associated with those tourist experiences having autotelic and pragmatic (instrumental) overtones

Abstract (sommario):
The Qur'an is the main source of religious and social sciences in Islam. The Qur'an was agreed upon by the Islamic scholars, not only discussing the issues of religion and morality, but also giving information and cues about science and science to humans. Among the sciences is the science of psychology, especially the psychology of human development. The purpose of this research is to explore and introduce the concept of developmental psychology in the Qur'an and As-Sunnah in order to be referenced by people who struggle in this field, including educators. The method used in this research is qualitative method with library research approach and descriptive analysis of the findings obtained from the library data. The results of this study explain that the soul in the Qur'an includes several understandings; Soul means Spirit, Soul means man as a whole consisting of spirit and body, Soul means potential human mind, Soul means heart (Qolb) and Soul means potential good and bad. The soul or human psychology has certain types and conditions according to God's creation and the soul or human psychology undergoes 3 (three) stages of development; weak, strong and weak the second.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper has been written as a personal tribute to the life and work of Irene Bloomfield. It focuses on her pioneering contributions to the development and practice of psychotherapeutic work with families affected by Nazi persecution and on the use of groupanalytic methods, where appropriate. It places special emphasis on her experience in dealing with the intergenerational communication problems encountered within those predominantly Jewish families. Her innovative approaches are significant in that they have wider relevance, notably within other traumatized groups, which have been persecuted because of social, cultural, ethnic or religious differences.

Summary This contribution considers the functionality of religious beliefs and practices from the angle of the psychology of religion. The role of religion in the main standard for mental health (Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) is discussed and research findings about the relation between religion and mental health are summarized. It is argued that to determine if a specific religious belief or practice is healthy or unhealthy, we need a fundamentally contextual approach, which takes into account not only the cultural and religious context but also the life-history and personal stance (normativity) of religious authorities, care professionals, patients and believers. The case of depression serves as an example.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACTRapid urbanisation in sub-Saharan Africa is believed to have weakened the traditional family ties which sustained older people in the past, but there is little empirical evidence about how older people today perceive their ageing experience in sub-Saharan Africa. The international gerontology literature demonstrates that, apart from financial wellbeing and health status, religious and secular forms of social involvement are key predictors of life satisfaction in older ages. No formal analysis, however, exists on the effects of religious and non-religious social involvement on the subjective wellbeing of older people in sub-Saharan nations. This study sought to fill this gap by examining the relationship between religious identity, religiosity, and secular social engagement using survey data from a sample of 2,524 men and women aged 50 or more years living in informal settlements of Nairobi City. We found significant differences in life satisfaction between Moslems, Catholics and non-Catholic Christians. Secular social support, personal sociability and community participation had positive effects on subjective wellbeing. In this context, we also observed that next to health status, the social involvement of older people was very important for life satisfaction.

In arguing for religion as a side effect of everyday cognition, Atran & Norenzayan (A&N) provide useful analyses of the strengths of the “naturalness-of-religion” position over others; however, experimental shortcomings limit the contributions of their empirical work. A relevant addendum involves considering research on children's orientation to teleological explanations of natural phenomena, which suggests that relatively rich cognitive proclivities might underlie religious thought.

Abstract (sommario):
<p>The study investigated the indiscipline of senior secondary school students and the contribution of home behaviour control and religiosity in Cross River State, Nigeria. An ex-post facto research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised 62,501 senior secondary school students in three educational zones. A multistage sampling procedure was adopted to select 1250 students from 30 randomly sampled public and private secondary schools. The Student Opinion Questionnaire (SOQ) was used for data collection. Experts in measurement and evaluation and educational psychology validated the instrument. The test-retest reliability coefficient ranged from 0.78-0.91. The data collected were analysed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results revealed that home behaviour control and home religiosity significantly influenced secondary school students' indiscipline behaviour. Specifically, students from firm homes and with high levels of religiosity generally exhibited lower indiscipline behaviour across all the dimensions. In comparison, those from lax homes and homes with low levels of religiosity manifested higher levels of indiscipline behaviour. These findings align with role theory, which suggests that individuals' behaviour is shaped by their immediate social environment. Policymakers can use these results to develop programs that promote positive behaviour by encouraging the development of a strong religious foundation in the home and promoting clear expectations and rules for behaviour.</p>
