Abstract (sommario):
Abstract : The purpose of this research is to know contextual interpretation and learning in education . This study uses a library research method, namely research analyzing written literature in the form of books and scientific journals as the main source, Contextual interpretation, namely the method used to study the Koran not only from the text, but also from language, historical background , sociology, and amtropology in accordance with the life and developments prevailing in the Arab nation and various approaches through it. The paradigm of contextual interpretation is the thoughts of Fazul Rahman, Abdullah Saeed, and Sahiron Samsudin. The implication of the interpretation of the Koran in the realm of education is the relationship or linkage of contestual interpretations in the realm of education, one of which is contextual learning. Learners to understand social conditions and then contextualize knowledge with social conditions. If in the Qur'an using contextual interpretation, in the field of education when learning uses contextual learning.

Abstract (sommario):
This article aims to explore the challenges of contextual biblical studies in the disruptive era. This era is marked by the development of digital technology such as smartphones, so that everyone can easily prepare sermon materials instantly from various interpretation applications on a smartphone, without basing it on in-depth Bible interpretation rules. The author presents the concepts and methods of biblical interpretation as a form of contextual biblical studies to overcome the use of instant sermons from various interpretation applications. By using a qualitative approach and the type of literature and descriptive research. From this research, it is found that contextual biblical studies are a solution to overcome biblical interpretation and the use of sermons that seem appropriate and instant regardless of the context of the text, the context of the interpreter, and the context of the listener. It also gives the impression of belittling or belittling sermon preparation and the rules of biblical interpretation. Contextual biblical studies can be used to avoid mistakes in interpreting and preparing sermons while at the same time producing biblical and contextual interpretations.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper describes a formalism and implementation for the interpretation and generation of sentences containing context-dependent constructs like determiners, pronouns, focus, and ellipsis. A variant of quasi-logical form is used as an under specified meaning representation, related to resolved logical forms via conditional equivalences. These equivalences define the interpretation of contextually dependent constructs with respect to a given context. Higher-order unification and abduction are used in relating expressions to contexts. The conditional equivalences can be used unchanged in both the interpretation and the generation direction.

Abstract (sommario):
One of the controversy-laden terms in the discourse of Islamic theology is ahl al-Kitab. Different ways of interpreting the term through textual and contextual exegesis of the Qur’an verses concerning it have colored the history of Muslim beliefs about other religion and religious communities. This paper aims to probe the controversies and arguments through revealing paradigms that underlies any views that differ from each other. Compromising the controversy was considered very important. Therefore, in the context the difference of textual and contextual interpretation of the term, the author conclude that both interpretations should be understood as mutual inclusion rather than two separate points in terms of mutual exclusion. Textual interpretation discovers basic, objective meaning of the term in Qur'an, while the contextual interpretation discovers its contextual meaning, both linguistic and socio-cultural.

Abstract (sommario):
Tradi tionally, in Isaianic studies, the aim of many commentators SInce the time of Duhm has been to try to rediscover the words of the eighth century prophet of Jerusalem. Descriptive words such as "a u then tic" and "secondary" betray the misconception tha t material which does not reach back to the time of the prophet is somehow less authentic and authoritative. The present study follows more recent trends in looking at the Book of Isaiah as a literary whole and in arguing that each section must be understood and interpreted not only in the light of its immediate context but also in the light of its place and function within the entire book. Six chapters (Isaiah 28-33) are analysed in two ways. Firstly the vocabulary is examined to establish linguistic and thematic similarities with other parts of the book and with the rest of the OT; secondly the many subsections within the six chapters are looked at contextually to determine how they relate to each other and consequently reveal a consistent and unified message. The way in which the material is arranged in chs 28-33 to highlight various themes may be seen as a microcosm of what is happening throughout the en tire book. One of the techniques used to actualize and unify composite traditions may be the concept of wisdom which seeks to instruct the reader in the way of righteousness. This analysis of chs 28-33 complements a similar one carried out by Sweeney [1988] on chs 1-4. The conclusions, too, are similar in that both studies emphasize that any section of Isaianic material, large or small, only makes sense ,*hen looked at in the light of the entire book.

Abstract (sommario):
In the early part of the 20th Century Egyptologists were often on the cutting edge of archaeological practice, but in the latter part of the century, Egyptology had seemingly fallen behind other areas of the world in regard to methodology and archaeological theory. A historical survey covering not just the development of Egyptology, but also of archaeological theory is provided to support this contention. This dissertation then reviews this situation and seeks to remedy it by providing a theoretical methodology for interpreting Egyptian sites. Instead of selecting either processualism or post-processualism or holistic explanations as a sole theoretical model, the question is ask and answered as to what kind of theoretical methodology should be developed for use in Egypt. The Pluralistic Contextual Approach is introduced, which builds on the interpretive works scholars such as Lynn Meskell and Stuart Tyson Smith. It features the use and interplay of textual, artistic/representational, archaeological data sets which are then examined through an integrated, mutually supporting theoretical structure drawn from both processualism and post-processualism to provide interpretive insights into Egyptian culture. Two Middle Kingdom (2055-1650 BC) sites, Kahun and Buhen, were chosen as case studies. These case studies were not intended to be full reinterpretations of the sites, but rather to demonstrate the interpretive value of the Pluralistic Contextual Approach. The case studies focus on interpretations of social class at these sites using this methodology, thus providing indications of class relations and hierarchies in Middle Kingdom Egypt.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores the constitutional right to receive basic education in the language of choice. This fundamental human right imposes a duty on the state to provide children with education in the language of their choice whenever reasonably practicable. It is not a matter of whether the state has to fulfil section 29(2) of the Constitution, but rather how to give effect to this provision. The right to receive basic education in the language of your choice is however, qualified by the specific internal limitation that provides that the right is subject to the condition that provision of education in the preferred language has to be reasonably practicable. Section 36, the limitation clause, is also a measure that can be used to limit this right. The aim of this paper is to contextually interpret the fundamental right to receive education in the language of one’s choice and to weigh up the intent of the provision to the provision’s actual result. All relevant factors will be taken into consideration to examine the possibility of limiting the right to receive instruction in the language of choice to comply with the purpose of education and the best interests of the child.

Abstract (sommario):
A total of sixty-four orations survive from the hand of Libanius. Four of these speeches were delivered under the reign of Constantius II (AD 337-361) and thus form a distinct chronological cluster in the Libanian corpus. The Constantian orations include Or. 59 To Constantius II and Constans (AD 346-9), Or. 11 The Antiochikos (AD 356), Or. 61 Monody on Nicomedia (AD 358), and Or. 61 For the teachers (AD 360-1). This study adopts a diachronic approach and analyses the historical and literary context of each Constantian oration with a particular focus on Libanius' self- presentation. The study suggests that Libanius' self-presentation was characterised by adaptability and versatility; it shows Libanius exploring a range of different genres and communicating with attentiveness to context and audience. The thesis also argues that Libanius' attitude to and engagement with Constantius' court fluctuated significantly from the delivery of Libanius' panegyric in the mid- to late 340s where Libanius supported Constantius after his defeat in the battle of Singara, over Libanius' encomium to Antioch in 356 where Libanius emphasised the strong connection between the Emperor and the city following the devastating reign of Gallus Caesar, to the delivery of For the teachers in 360-361, where Libanius publically voiced his criticism of the Emperor's cultural and religious policies after Libanius himself had lost imperial funding. Furthermore, the study displays the continued importance of oratory in Late Antiquity and emphasises the central role of sophists both as commentators and mediators in society.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis aims to provide a thorough examination of the impact of the English Reformation through a detailed analysis of medieval and early modern church fittings surviving at parish churches located throughout the county of Norfolk in England. By utilizing an archaeological approach along with the written record, a deeper and more nuanced understanding of public worship reveals the theological imperatives of the reformers and conformers. This study compiled data from both rural and urban parish churches which provides a regional approach to engaging the issues of visuality, space and identity. Church fittings were selected based on their liturgical function and propensity to feature decorative iconography. This includes: baptismal fonts, screens, wall paintings, and sculptures. Through an extensive analysis of church fittings, this research is the first to suggest that the Bible-centric component to Protestant theology provided the framework which contributed to the success of the Reformation. The religious identity of England was transformed as visual continuity enabled an entire generation to continue their religious experience in a traditional context in spite of the moderate alteration to liturgy and comprehensive transformation of doctrine. This criterion eased the transition, as liturgical continuity and selective iconoclasm forged a new physical religious environment that retained enough elements to satiate traditionalist. The reformers were appeased into conformity, as Protestant doctrine redefined the purpose of the surviving rituals and iconography, with the latter emerging as a visual extension of the campaign to promote the primacy of Scripture. Furthermore, an assessment of post-Reformation innovations reveals the use of vernacular Biblical text as a preferred mode of decoration, with an increase in the use of secular heraldry and commemoration directly on church fittings.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis addresses contextual design in the city, particularly the design of contemporary architecture in historic places. The research focuses on an analysis of Old Havana's urban architecture, particularly the spatial qualities of colonial Cuban houses as well as visual, social, and functional qualities of their urban façades. Additionally, I analyze specific mid-twentieth century houses that reinterpret Cuba’s colonial architecture in order to derive architectural principles that are tested in my design process. The design project is a mixed-use cultural center at the Plaza Vieja in Old Havana, Cuba. As a cultural destination currently under going restoration, the Plaza Vieja is an appropriate place to propose a contemporary project that reinterprets Havana’s historic context. The cultural center embodies a synthesis between old and new ideas.

Abstract (sommario):
Aotearoa-New Zealand received Christianity as part of the colonial/missionary matrix of nineteenth century European expansion. Consequently the form and content of faith was largely shaped by factors distant both in geography and symbolic resonance. Christian theology maintains a cultural dissonance, particularly from an emergent Pakeha cultural indentity. The quest for contextualisation has become a familiar one in post-colonial societies, though not as vigorously pursued in Western nations as in other parts of the world. Only recently has attention been paid to the possibilities of local theologies in New Zealand. C.S. Songs suggests Perhaps a poet can tell us how we should go about theology. In this he is pointing to the necessity of contextual theology using domestic cultural product as an important source for theological reflection, encapsulating as it does local history and experience. James K. Baxter, one of New Zealands finest poets, was also a Catholic and social critic. In the last years of his life particularly, the major part of his writing, both poetry and prose, was concerned with his vision of a Christian humanism which might make a practical difference in the immediate context. He established a community at the small settlement of Jerusalem beside the Whanganui River, where he sought to give tangible expression to a mixture of radical Christian acceptance and Maori spiritual values. This thesis examines Baxters contribution to the task of contextual theology. In particular, it draws on a great deal of unpublished prose material, until now largely unexamined, from the late period of his life. This, together with the wider body of his writings, is used to investigate his religious thought and movement within it. After an introductory and methodological chapter, the thesis examines Baxters categorisation of the fragmented and spiritually bereft nature of Pakeha existence. It then seeks to follow the major themes of his own powerfully articulated responses to this condition, in a series of chapters introduced with Maori terms; a cultural connection which was important to Baxter. The investigation uncovers a commitment to a Christian humanism that recognises the immanence of Christ, and a rather startling manifesto which parallels the approach of Liberation Theology in a distinctly New Zealand context. The survey of Baxters religious thought concludes with a critical reflection on his themes. A final chapter considers the contribution which Baxter makes toward the challenge of contextual theology. Considering the relationship between poetic reflection and theology, it stops short of classifying Baxter as a theologian. Rather the argument is advanced that he has provided vital raw material to the ongoing task of local theology; his role is one of funding contextual theology symbolically. Baxter is significant in the development of theology in Aotearoa-New Zealand, both for his contribution and his encouragement to further reflection.

Abstract (sommario):

The prediction of internal human states—what a person is thinking and feeling—by computers remains an elusive yet attractive goal. The potential applications of such a system are many, including but not limited to lie detection, consumer satisfaction and interest, autonomous vehicle safety, enhanced social networking, and even robotic friendship and companionship.

We believe that scientific progress towards such lofty and exciting applications as described above has been slowed because prior efforts to create an autonomous computer system capable of predicting what a human being is thinking or feeling have been largely predicting or detecting “emotions” in humans, rather than detecting more empirically falsifiable events. There is much scholarly disagreement as to the exact nature of what emotions actually are, and thus Affective Computing dealing with emotional prediction is forced to rely on poorly-defined and often-contradictory ground truths.

In our research, we focus on predicting discrete events based on the expressive behavior of human subjects. Our systems use a user-dependent method of analysis and rely heavily on contextual information to make predictions about the meaning behind subject expressive behavior. Our system’s accuracy and therefore usefulness are built on provable ground truths that prohibit the drawing of inaccurate conclusions that other systems could too easily make.

While the current application of our research idea—a Contextually Informed Program for Hyper-personalized Empathetic Report, or CIPHER—is modest (predicting player behavior during a game of poker), we believe it to be the foundation upon which much more extensive empathetic and affective analysis systems could be solidly and eventually built.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractNumerical concepts are an integral part of everyday conversation and communication. Expressions relating to numbers in natural language can have precise or imprecise interpretations. While the precise interpretation most prominently appears in mathematical contexts, the imprecise interpretation seems to arise when numbers (as quantities) are applied to real world contexts (e.g., the rope is 50 m long). Earlier literature shows that the (im)precise interpretation can depend on different factors, e.g., the kind of approximator a numeral appears with (precise vs. imprecise, e.g., exactly vs. roughly) or the kind of numeral itself (round vs. non-round, e.g., 50 vs. 47). We report on a corpus-linguistic study and a rating experiment of English numerical expressions. The results confirm the effects of both factors and additionally an effect of the kind of unit (discrete vs. continuous, e.g., people vs. meters). This shows the contextual variability in the interpretation of numerical concepts in natural language.

Abstract (sommario):
While outlier detection has been intensively studied in many applications, interpretation is becoming increasingly important to help people trust and evaluate the developed detection models through providing intrinsic reasons why the given outliers are identified. It is a nontrivial task for interpreting the abnormality of outliers due to the distinct characteristics of different detection models, complicated structures of data in certain applications, and imbalanced distribution of outliers and normal instances. In addition, contexts where outliers locate, as well as the relation between outliers and the contexts, are usually overlooked in existing interpretation frameworks. To tackle the issues, in this paper, we propose a Contextual Outlier INterpretation (COIN) framework to explain the abnormality of outliers spotted by detectors. The interpretability of an outlier is achieved through three aspects, i.e., outlierness score, attributes that contribute to the abnormality, and contextual description of its neighborhoods. Experimental results on various types of datasets demonstrate the flexibility and effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Abstract (sommario):
Efforts to automate mining of procedural information from surgical texts are enabling technology for future autonomous surgical robots. In building their knowledge base (or seeking to augment it if they encounter un- expected circumstances), these robots need to interface with surgical resources so far intended for human use— such as textbooks, case reports, published medical lit- erature. Knowledge mined from surgical texts forms the backbone of higher cognition mechanisms that support surgical situation awareness and autonomous decision- making, as well as verbal interaction with humans. Great progress in natural language understanding is required. Regardless of whether the information is in- tended to support monitoring processes, surgeon or performance evaluation, or (in the future) autonomous decision-making, the safety-critical nature of the domain requires a careful study of the information landscape. Surgical textbooks contain descriptions of surgical pro- cedures that are presented semi-algorithmically, often organized in phases and occasionally also in steps. Sur- geons can understand and execute the procedure from the description, so it is possible at least in principle to derive a high-level executable representation of the procedure, one which could be suitable for an autonomous robot. However, even assuming that the robot already have executable routines corresponding to elementary surgical instructions such as incising an anatomical structure, placing an object in an anatomical location (and so on), not all information necessary to parametrize a surgical action is found directly in the text, and when it is, it is not always local to where the instruction is mentioned. Some parameters that cannot be found in the text are not missing per se; rather, they are patient-specific and thus available only when the abstract procedure is instantiated. Their values can only be determined from the direct perception of the surgical scene or from patient-specific imaging.

Abstract (sommario):
This technical report serves as a contextual planning document for an interpretive exhibit within and surrounding the Mountain View Officers’ Club, Building 66050, at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. During World War II (WWII), the Mountain View Officers’ Club served as the installation’s Black officers’ club. It served as various other uses until circa 1998, at which point it became vacant. Today, Fort Huachuca is planning to rehabilitate the building into a mission use space with an indoor-outdoor exhibit space for visitor use within the rehabilitation plan footprint, an 8.15 acre Area of Potential Effect (APE) including the WWII building and associated adjacent features. This report provides numerous potential Courses of Action regarding methods of exhibiting and interpreting historic materials and information in the public spaces within the APE. The Courses of Action chosen during a future Design-Build phase will be based on factors currently unknown, such as funding and staffing; thus, this document serves as a Phase I concept plan for ideas that will be further developed and finalized during the Phase II Design-Build phase. This report also provides guidance for course of action implementation pending factors currently unknown. Fort Huachuca will keep this report in both digital and analog format in perpetuity. ERDC-CERL will also publish it online and make it available to the public free of cost.
