In today's society, an enormous amount of data is created that is stored in various databases. Since the data is in many cases stored in different databases, there is a demand from organizations with a lot of data to be able to merge separated data and get an extraction of this resource. Extract, Transform and Load System (ETL) is a solution that has made it possible to easily merge different databases. However, the ETL market has been owned by large actors such as Amazon and Microsoft and the solutions offered are completely owned by these actors. This leaves the consumer with little ownership of the solution. Therefore, this thesis proposes a framework to create a component based ETL which gives consumers an opportunity to own and develop their own ETL solution that they can customize to their own needs. The result of the thesis is a prototype ETL solution that is built with the idea of being able to configure and customize the prototype and it accomplishes this by being independent of inflexible external libraries and a level of modularity that makes adding and removing components easy. The results of this thesis are verified with a test that shows how two different files containing data can be combined.
I dagens samhälle skapas det en enorm mängd data som är lagrad i olika databaser. Eftersom data i många fall är lagrat i olika databaser, finns det en efterfrågan från organisationer med mycket data att kunna slå ihop separerad data och få en utvinning av denna resurs. Extract, Transform and Load System (ETL) är en lösning som gjort det möjligt att slå ihop olika databaser. Dock är problemet denna expansion av ETL teknologi. ETL marknaden blivit ägd av stora aktörer såsom Amazon och Microsoft och de lösningar som erbjuds är helt ägda av dem. Detta lämnar konsumenten med lite ägodel av lösningen. Därför föreslår detta examensarbete ett ramverk för att skapa ett komponentbaserat ETL verktyg som ger konsumenter en möjlighet att utveckla en egen ETL lösning som de kan skräddarsy efter deras egna förfogande. Resultatet av examensarbete är en prototyp ETL-lösning som är byggd för att kunna konfigurera och skräddarsy prototypen. Lösningen lyckas med detta genom att vara oberoende av oflexibla externa bibliotek och en nivå av modularitet som gör addering och borttagning av komponenter enkelt. Resultatet av detta examensarbete är verifierat av ett test som visar på hur två olika filer med innehållande data kan kombineras.

Unique column combinations of a relational database table are sets of columns that contain only unique values. Discovering such combinations is a fundamental research problem and has many different data management and knowledge discovery applications. Existing discovery algorithms are either brute force or have a high memory load and can thus be applied only to small datasets or samples. In this paper, the wellknown GORDIAN algorithm and "Apriori-based" algorithms are compared and analyzed for further optimization. We greatly improve the Apriori algorithms through efficient candidate generation and statistics-based pruning methods. A hybrid solution HCAGORDIAN combines the advantages of GORDIAN and our new algorithm HCA, and it significantly outperforms all previous work in many situations.
Unique-Spaltenkombinationen sind Spaltenkombinationen einer Datenbanktabelle, die nur einzigartige Werte beinhalten. Das Finden von Unique-Spaltenkombinationen spielt sowohl eine wichtige Rolle im Bereich der Grundlagenforschung von Informationssystemen als auch in Anwendungsgebieten wie dem Datenmanagement und der Erkenntnisgewinnung aus Datenbeständen. Vorhandene Algorithmen, die dieses Problem angehen, sind entweder Brute-Force oder benötigen zu viel Hauptspeicher. Deshalb können diese Algorithmen nur auf kleine Datenmengen angewendet werden. In dieser Arbeit werden der bekannte GORDIAN-Algorithmus und Apriori-basierte Algorithmen zum Zwecke weiterer Optimierung analysiert. Wir verbessern die Apriori Algorithmen durch eine effiziente Kandidatengenerierung und Heuristikbasierten Kandidatenfilter. Eine Hybride Lösung, HCA-GORDIAN, kombiniert die Vorteile von GORDIAN und unserem neuen Algorithmus HCA, welche die bisherigen Algorithmen hinsichtlich der Effizienz in vielen Situationen übertrifft.

Aujourd'hui, les véhicules sont devenus de plus en plus sophistiqués, intelligents et connectés. En effet, ils sont équipés de capteurs, radars, GPS, interfaces de communication et capacités de traitement et de stockage élevés. Ils peuvent collecter, traiter et communiquer les informations relatives à leurs conditions de travail et leur environnement formant un réseau véhiculaire. L'intégration des technologies de communication sur les véhicules fait l'objet d'une immense attention de l'industrie, des autorités gouvernementales et des organisations de standardisations; elle a ouvert la voie à des applications innovantes qui vont révolutionner le marché de l'automobile avec les principaux objectifs d'assurer la sécurité sur les routes, augmenter l'efficacité des transports et offrir un confort aux conducteurs et passagers. En outre, le transport est un secteur en évolution active. Des moyens de transport plus durables comme les véhicules électriques s'introduisent progressivement sur le marché de l'automobile tout en créant de nouveaux défis liés à la contrainte énergétique et la protection de l'environnement qui restent à résoudre.De nombreux projets et études ont été initiés exploitant les avantages des technologies de l'information et de communication (TIC) afin de répondre aux différents défis des systèmes de transport. Cependant, avoir des véhicules connectés et coopératifs crée un réseau hautement dynamique caractérisé par des ruptures de lien et de pertes de messages très fréquentes. Pour résoudre ces problèmes de communication, cette thèse se concentre sur deux axes majeurs: (i) le véhicule connecté (ou mobilité connectée) et (ii) la mobilité durable. Dans la première partie de cette thèse, la diffusion, la collecte et l'acheminement de données dans un réseau de véhicule sont adressés. Ainsi, un nouveau protocole de diffusion est proposé afin de faire face à la fragmentation et la connectivité intermittente dans ces réseaux. Ensuite, une nouvelle stratégie de déploiement d'infrastructure de communication est conçue afin d'améliorer la connectivité réseau et l'utilisation des ressources. Enfin, un nouveau protocole de routage, pour applications sensibles au délai, utilisant cette nouvelle infrastructure de communication est proposé. La deuxième partie se concentre sur la mobilité durable avec un focus sur les véhicules électriques et avec un objectif de réduire les problèmes de pollution et d'utiliser efficacement l'énergie. Une nouvelle architecture de gestion de flottes de véhicules électriques est proposée. Cette dernière utilise les protocoles implémentés dans la première partie de cette thèse afin de collecter, traiter et diffuser les données. Elle permet de surmonter les limitations liées à la courte autonomie des batteries des véhicules électriques. Ensuite, pour répondre aux besoins et défis d'équilibre énergétique, un nouveau schéma de déploiement des stations de recharge pour véhicules électriques est proposé. Cette solution permet de satisfaire les demandes des conducteurs en terme d'énergie, tout en tenant compte les capacités énergétiques disponibles
Today, vehicles have become more sophisticated, intelligent and connected. Indeed, they are equipped with sensors, radars, GPS, communication interfaces and high processing and storage capacities. They can collect, process and communicate information related to their working conditions and their environment forming a vehicular network. The incorporation of communication technologies on vehicles garnered a huge attention of industry, government authorities and standardizations organizations and opened the way for innovative applications that revolutionized the automotive market with the main goals to ensure safety on roads, increase transport efficiency and provide comfort to drivers and passengers. In addition, transportation is still an actively evolving sector. More sustainable means of transportation such as electric vehicles are introduced progressively to the automotive market with new challenges related to energy consumption and environment preservation that remain to be solved. Many research investigations and industrial projects are done to exploit the advantages of information and communication technologies (ICT) to fit with transportation challenges. However, having connected and cooperative vehicles creates a highly dynamic network characterized by frequent link breaks and message losses. To cope with these communication limitations, this thesis focuses on two major axis: (i) connected vehicle or connected mobility and (ii) sustainable mobility. In the first part of this thesis, data dissemination, collection and routing in vehicular networks are addressed. Thus, a new dissemination protocol is proposed to deal with frequent network fragmentation and intermittent connectivity in these networks. Then, a new deployment strategy of new communication infrastructure is developed in order to increase network connectivity and enhance the utilization of the network resources. Finally, a new routing protocol, for delay-sensitive applications, that uses the optimized infrastructure deployment is proposed. The second part focuses on sustainable mobility with a focus on electric vehicles and with the main objective is to reduce pollution issues and make better use of energy. A new architecture for electric vehicles fleet management is proposed. This latter uses the implemented protocols of the first part of this thesis in order to collect, process and disseminate data. It helps to overcome the limitations related to short autonomy of electric vehicles. Then, to meet energy balance challenges, a new deployment scheme for electric vehicles charging stations is developed. This solution helps to satisfy drivers’ demands in term of energy while taking into account available resources

This study set out to establish artificial neural networks (ANN) as an alternate to regression methods (multiple linear, principal components and partial least squares regression) to predict consumer liking from trained sensory panel data. The study has two parts viz., I) Flavour study - evaluation of ANNs to predict consumer flavour preferences from trained sensory panel data and 2) Fragrance study ??? evaluation of different ANN architectures to predict consumer fragrance liking from trained sensory panel data. In this study, a multi-layer feedforward neural network architecture with input, hidden and output layer(s) was designed. The back-propagation algorithm was utilised in training of neural networks. The network learning parameters such as learning rate and momentum rate were optimised by the grid experiments for a fixed number of learning cycles. In flavour study, ANNs were trained using the trained sensory panel raw data as well as transformed data. The networks trained with sensory panel raw data achieved 98% correct learning, whereas the testing was within the range of 28 -35%. A suitable transformation methods were applied to reduce the variations in trained sensory panel raw data. The networks trained with transformed sensory panel data achieved between 80-90% correct learning and 80-95% correct testing. In fragrance study, ANNs were trained using the trained sensory panel raw data as well as principal component data. The networks trained with sensory panel raw data achieved 100% correct learning, and testing was in a range of 70-94%. Principal component analysis was applied to reduce redundancy in the trained sensory panel data. The networks trained with principal component data achieved about 100% correct learning and 90% correct testing. It was shown that due to its excellent noise tolerance property and ability to predict more than one type of consumer liking using a single model, the ANN approach promises to be an effective modelling tool.

Data obtained from foreign data sources often come with only superficial structural information, such as relation names and attribute names. Other types of metadata that are important for effective integration and meaningful querying of such data sets are missing. In particular, relationships among attributes, such as foreign keys, are crucial metadata for understanding the structure of an unknown database. The discovery of such relationships is difficult, because in principle for each pair of attributes in the database each pair of data values must be compared. A precondition for a foreign key is an inclusion dependency (IND) between the key and the foreign key attributes. We present with Spider an algorithm that efficiently finds all INDs in a given relational database. It leverages the sorting facilities of DBMS but performs the actual comparisons outside of the database to save computation. Spider analyzes very large databases up to an order of magnitude faster than previous approaches. We also evaluate in detail the effectiveness of several heuristics to reduce the number of necessary comparisons. Furthermore, we generalize Spider to find composite INDs covering multiple attributes, and partial INDs, which are true INDs for all but a certain number of values. This last type is particularly relevant when integrating dirty data as is often the case in the life sciences domain - our driving motivation.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a technology that facilitates wirelesscommunication. It is being widely used for access control purposes to aid administration ofservices. As with most wireless technologies, RFID has its challenges, due to its medium (radio waves) of communication, which makes it susceptible to signal interception and other possible attacks. The goal of this project is to investigate the insecurities in the implementation of the RFID system in transit (Storstockholms Lokaltrafik, Stockholm) systems. Due to the nature of the system, spatial information about consumers are accumulated over time thereby attracting some level of interests either legitimate or illegitimate, and raising some concerns. This thesis, takes into consideration the vulnerabilities of the RFID system and the potential security risks consumers of the system are exposed to, a detailed analysis is carried out on the existing infrastructure with the goal of exposing the shortcomings of the systems and proposing mitigating solutions. After an extensive work, seven (7) threats to privacy and security of RFID users were elaborated. Also discussion, about how different legislations around the world enforced data handling regulations in relation to commuter data, is carried out. Finally, most recent threats to consumer privacy are taken into consideration, as well as security in the mass transit field to put together a list of recommended safe practices. The work shows that RFID does pose significant threat to consumer privacy. One might argue that RFID has its benefits in its various implementations. However the fact remains that there are issues with regards to privacy that must to be addressed.

The strategic importance of customer retention and the costs associated with customer switching behaviour have resulted in researchers devoting considerable attention to investigating the switching and/or staying behaviour of customers. However, relatively little attention has been devoted to investigating (1) the important deterrents to discontinuing the relationship in a single model in the business-to-business (B-to-B) service sector, and (2) the mediating factors under the condition of dissatisfaction in the B-to-B services sector. The fastest growth in services marketing today is in business markets, making this an important area of study with significance for marketers, particularly in terms of the development of customer retention. A two-stage research design, with qualitative and quantitative phases, was employed in the current research using a single key informant approach. The qualitative study utilised an indepth interview technique in which key informants representing 21 businesses provided interviews. The quantitative study employed a cross-sectional email URL embedded Web survey of key informants, which resulted in a final sample size of 376 responses. The simultaneous nature of the multiple relationships between key constructs was analysed using structural equation modelling. The research demonstrated that distributive justice, procedural justice, interactional justice, satisfaction with complaint—handling, benefit-loss costs, economic-loss costs, learning costs, sunk costs, interpersonal relationships, dependence and calculative commitment are the direct and indirect factors that influence the likelihood of dissatisfied customers remaining in a relationship. A key finding is the mediating role of both dependence and calculative commitment on the relationship between specific firmlevel investments and repurchase intentions. This thesis makes four contributions. Firstly, it uses a business services context, which is an under—researched area for this research problem. Secondly, it connects determinant factors to an outcome variable in explaining the tendency among B—to-B services customers, who have complained and considered switching, to remain involved in a relationship that is dissatisfying overall. Thirdly, it examines the effects of antecedents on calculative commitment that have previously not been examined, thus making a conceptual and empirical contribution. Finally, it offers managerial implications for the offending service firms as well as for those service firms that are attempting to attract dissatisfied prospective switchers of the offending firm.

This research examines the confluence of consumers’ use of social media to share information with the ever-present need for innovative research that yields insight into consumers’ economic decisions. Social media networks have become ubiquitous in the new millennium. These networks, including, among others: Facebook, Twitter, Blog, and Reddit, are brimming with conversations on an expansive array of topics between people, private and public organizations, governments and global institutions. Preliminary findings from initial research confirms the existence of online conversations and posts related to matters of personal finance and consumers’ economic outlook. Meanwhile, the Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) continues to make headline news. The issue of consumer confidence (or sentiment) in anticipating future economic activity generates significant interest from major players in the news media industry, who scrutinize its every detail and report its implications for key players in the economy. Though the CCI originated in the United States in 1946, variants of the survey are now used to track and measure consumer confidence in nations worldwide. In light of the fact that the CCI is a quantified representation of consumer sentiments, it is possible that the level of confidence consumers have in the economy could be deduced by tracking the sentiments or opinions they express in social media posts. Systematic study of these posts could then be transformed into insights that could improve the accuracy of an index like the CCI. Herein lies the focus of the current research—to analyze the attributes of data from social media posts, in order to assess their capacity to generate insights that are novel and/or complementary to traditional CCI methods. The link between data gained from social media and the survey-based CCI is perhaps not an obvious one. But our research will use a data extraction tool called NetBase Insight Workbench to mine data from the social media networks and then apply natural language processing to analyze the social media content. Also, KH Coder software will be used to perform a set of statistical analyses on samples of social media posts to examine the co-occurrence and clustering of words. The findings will be used to expose the strengths and weaknesses of the data and to assess the validity and cohesion of the NetBase data extraction tool and its suitability for future research. In conclusion, our research findings support the analysis of opinions expressed in social media posts as a complement to traditional survey-based CCI approaches. Our findings also identified a key weakness with regards to the degree of ‘noisiness’ of the data. Although this could be attributed to the ‘modeling’ error of the data mining tool, there is room for improvement in the area of association—of discerning the context and intention of posts in online conversations.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: 'Housing' has been addressed as a basic human right. In South Africa this right has become a challenge, which cannot be met by the government alone. It also requires a vast contribution from the broader non-State (private) sector. This includes large companies who need to provide housing assistance to their employees. The aim of this research was to develop an educational computer programme which can be used by companies in their employee housing assistance programmes. The objectives of the research included establishing the extent to which companies provide employee housing assistance; the viability of an educational computer programme; the requirements of companies; criteria and content of a computer programme; and the development and testing of a pilot demonstration module of an educational computer programme for employee housing assistance. Exploratory research was carried out on a sample of 112 companies by means of both postal and telephonic questionnaires. The results of these surveys indicated that 41 of these companies have already established employee housing assistance, providing general information on housing and housing related issues. Most of these companies, however, are only offering financial assistance to their employees without the necessary education and training which should accompany it. A programme which provides these aspects benefits both the company and the employees and should be implemented by many more institutions throughout the country. The main findings of this research, indicated the viability of an educational computer programme and the surveyed companies were positive about using it as part of their employee housing assistance. Throughout the world, computers have proved to offer high-quality interaction and unique learning opportunities to users of varying levels of understanding. They have also demonstrated that they are convenient to use and assist in promoting effective management of time and finances. On the basis of the responses to the survey, essential elements of an educational computer programme for the use of companies in employee housing assistance were identified. A pilot demonstration module was developed using a holistic and didactically sound approach. The development of this educational computer programme, will allow lower income employees to receive beneficial housing assistance at their own pace and level of comprehension and education through an enjoyable and contemporary medium. The results of the initial (but limited) testing of the pilot demonstration module, suggested that there is justification for the further development of the programme and for research to be carried out to examine its effect in the private sector. This research sheds light on the present trends in the provision of employee housing assistance in the private sector and the positive contribution which companies can provide to the housing crisis in South Africa.

Die doelwitte van die navorsing was onder meer om die mate waartoe maatskappye reeds behuisingsondersteuningsprogramme vir hulle werknemers aanbied, te bepaal. Verder is die lewensvatbaarheid van 'n opvoedkundige rekenaarprogram bepaal, asook die maatskappye se behoefte aan so 'n program. Daar is ook vasgestel wat maatskappye se menings oor die kriteria vir en inhoud van 'n opvoedkundige rekenaarprogram, wat as deel van hulle behuisingsondersteuningsprogram aan werknemers gebied kan word, is. Verkennende navorsing is onderneem met 'n steekproef van 112 maatskappye deur middel van telefoniese- en posvraelyste. Die resultate van hierdie vraelyste het aangedui dat 41 van die maatskappye reeds 'n behuisingsondersteuningsprogram aanbied wat algemene inligting oor behuising en behuisingsverwante aangeleenthede aan die werknemers verskaf. Die meeste van dié maatskappye, wat behuisingsondersteuningsprogramme aanbied, bied egter alleenlik finansiële hulp aan hulle werknemers, sonder die nodige meegaande opvoeding en opleiding. "n Program wat beide finansiële en opvoedkundige hulp aanbied kan maatskappye en werknemers tot voordeel strek en behoort landswyd deur baie meer inrigtings geïmplementeer te word. Die hoofbevindinge van die navorsing het getoon dat die opvoedkundige rekenaarprogram lewensvatbaar is, en die deelnemende maatskappye het bereidwilligheid getoon om so "n program as deel van hulle werknemers se behuisingsondersteuningsprogram in te sluit. Die ontwikkeling van die rekenaarprogram sal dit moontlik maak vir werknemers om op verskillende vlakke van begrip en opvoedingspeil, voordelige behuisingsondersteuning teen hulle eie tempo en deur middel van "n genotvolle en kontemporêre medium te kan ontvang. Dit is wêreldwyd bewys dat rekenaars hoë kwaliteit interaksie en unieke leergeleenthede op alle begripssvlakke kan bied. Daar is ook bewys gelewer dat rekenaars nie net gerieflik is nie, maar ook effektief met die bestuur van tyd en finansies is. Op grond van die vraelys resultate, is noodsaaklike elemente van 'n rekenaargebaseerde behuisingsondersteuningsprogram vir werknemers geïdentifiseer, en "n proefmodule ontwikkel wat gebruik maak van "n holistiese en didakties gesonde benadering. Die uitslae van die eerste (maar beperkte) toetsing van die proefmodule dui daarop dat daar regverdiging is vir die verdere ontwikkeling van die program asook vir navorsing om te bepaal wat die effek van so "n program op die privaatsektor sou wees. Hierdie navorsing het lig gewerp op huidige neigings in die verskaffing van behuisingsondersteuning aan werknemers in die privaatsektor, asook op die positiewe bydrae wat deur maatskappye gelewer kan word tot die oplossing van die behuisingkrisis in Suid-Afrika.

This thesis investigates profiling and differentiating customers through the use of statistical data mining techniques. The business application of our work centres on examining individuals’ seldomly studied yet critical consumption behaviour over an extensive time period within the context of the wireless telecommunication industry; consumption behaviour (as oppose to purchasing behaviour) is behaviour that has been performed so frequently that it become habitual and involves minimal intentions or decision making. Key variables investigated are the activity initialised timestamp and cell tower location as well as the activity type and usage quantity (e.g., voice call with duration in seconds); and the research focuses are on customers’ spatial and temporal usage behaviour. The main methodological emphasis is on the development of clustering models based on Gaussian mixture models (GMMs) which are fitted with the use of the recently developed variational Bayesian (VB) method. VB is an efficient deterministic alternative to the popular but computationally demandingMarkov chainMonte Carlo (MCMC) methods. The standard VBGMMalgorithm is extended by allowing component splitting such that it is robust to initial parameter choices and can automatically and efficiently determine the number of components. The new algorithm we propose allows more effective modelling of individuals’ highly heterogeneous and spiky spatial usage behaviour, or more generally human mobility patterns; the term spiky describes data patterns with large areas of low probability mixed with small areas of high probability. Customers are then characterised and segmented based on the fitted GMM which corresponds to how each of them uses the products/services spatially in their daily lives; this is essentially their likely lifestyle and occupational traits. Other significant research contributions include fitting GMMs using VB to circular data i.e., the temporal usage behaviour, and developing clustering algorithms suitable for high dimensional data based on the use of VB-GMM.

The growth of eCommerce is being hampered by a lack of trust between providers and consumers of Web-based services. While Web trust issues have been addressed by researchers in many disciplines, a comprehensive approach has yet to be established. This thesis proposes a conceptual trust-profiling framework???W3TF???which addresses issues of trust and user confidence through a range of new user-centred trust measures???trust categories, trust domains, transitivity of trust, fading factor analysis, standalone assessment, hyperlinked assessment and relevance assessment. While others now use the concept of transitivity of trust, it was first introduced by this research in 1998. The thesis also illustrates how W3TF can narrow the gap/disconnection between the hierarchical PKI trust environment and the horizontal Web referral environment. The framework incorporates existing measures of trust (such as Public Key Infrastructure), takes account of consumer perceptions by identifying trust attributes, and utilises Web technology (in the form of metadata), to create a practical, flexible and comprehensive approach to trust assessment. The versatility of the W3TF is demonstrated by applying it to a variety of cases from trust literature and to the hypothetical case study that provided the initial stimulus for this research. It is shown that the framework can be expanded to accommodate new trust attributes, categories and domains, and that trust can be ???weighed??? (and therefore evaluated) by using various mathematical formulae based on different theories and policies. The W3TF addresses identified needs, narrows the gaps in existing approaches and provides a mechanism to embrace current and future efforts in trust management. The framework is a generic form of trust assessment that can help build user confidence in an eCommerce environment. For service providers, it offers an incentive to create websites with a high number of desired trust attributes. For consumers, it enables more reliable judgments to be made. Hence, Web trust can be enhanced.

This research examines the plausibility of developing demand forecasting techniques which are consistently and accurately able to predict demand. Time Series Techniques and Artificial Neural Networks are both investigated. Deodorant sales in South Africa are specifically studied in this thesis. Marketing techniques which are used to influence consumer buyer behaviour are considered, and these factors are integrated into the forecasting models wherever possible. The results of this research suggest that Artificial Neural Networks can be developed which consistently outperform industry forecasting targets as well as Time Series forecasts, suggesting that producers could reduce costs by adopting this more effective method.

Baseado em dois momentos distintos da realidade brasileira, os anos de 2002/03 e 2008/09, este estudo busca avaliar se houve mudança no perfil dos consumidore de filmes em salas de cinema, por meio de variáveis observáveis de indivíduos consumidores e não consumidores. Para esta finalidade são empregadas técnicas de mineração de dados de florestas aleatórias sobre os microdados das Pesquisas de Orçamentos Familiares (POFs) de 2002/2003, quando o uso de banda larga no Brasil era praticamente nulo, e de 2008/2009, quando esta já estava estabelecida no país. Esta diferença no tempo e de acesso à banda larga proporcionam uma janela de oportunidade para nosso objetivo, dado o elevado grau de mudanças tecnológicas do período investigado. Apesar de metodologicamente não ser possível isolar completamente o efeito do acesso à Internet sobre o consumo de cinema, espera-se que quanto maior a velocidade de acesso e maior a evolução das tecnologias de compactação de arquivos, a distribuição de conteúdo aumente na rede e permita maior consumo de filmes de maneira alternativa ao em salas de cinema. Neste contexto, além de identificar se houve alguma mudança de perfil dos consumidores de filmes em salas de cinema no Brasil após a popularização da banda larga no país, que oficialmente pode ser considerada no ano de 2006, também avaliamos se estes consumidores diferem significativamente dos não consumidores em suas características observáveis. Adicionalmente, num segundo estudo, usando um modelo de intervenção de Diferenças em Diferenças, investigamos o efeito da banda larga sobre o consumo de cinema. Os resultados apontam divergência clara entre os perfis de consumidores e não consumidores de filmes de cinema.
I investigate whether film at theaters consumers in two distinct time are different in their observable characteristics. My investigation is based on observable variables of consumers and non-consumers data from the Family Budget Survey (POF) of 2002/2003, when the use of broadband in Brazil was almost nil, and from 2008/2009, when it already was established in the country. This change in addition to the high degree of technological changes over the period provides a window of opportunity for our objective. Although methodologically it is not possible to full isolate the effect of Internet access on film consumption, it is expected that the higher the user access speed and the greater the evolution of file compression technologies, the faster and bigger will be the traffic of films files on the web. Accordingly, the greater distribution of content on the network enables the consumption of films in alternative ways to movie theaters. Thus, in addition to identifying possible changes in the profile of movie consumers at the theaters in Brazil since the popularization of broadband in the country, which can officially be considered in the year 2006, the study assess whether these consumers differ significantly from not consumers in their observable characteristics. The results points to several distinctions between cinema consumers and no cinema consumers

Customer knowledge plays a vital part in organisations today, particularly in sales and marketing processes, where customers can either be channel partners or final consumers. Managing customer data and/or information across business units, departments, and functions is vital. Frequently, channel partners gather and capture data about downstream customers and consumers that organisations further upstream in the channel require to be incorporated into their information systems in order to allow for management information delivery to their users. In this study, the focus is placed on manufacturing organisations using third party distribution since the flow of information between channel partner organisations in a supply chain (in contrast to the flow of products) provides an important link between organisations and increasingly represents a source of competitive advantage in the marketplace. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a significant difference in the use of sales and marketing data marts as management information delivery mechanisms in manufacturing organisations in different industries, particularly the pharmaceuticals and branded consumer products. The case studies presented in this dissertation indicates that there are significant differences between the use of sales and marketing data marts in different manufacturing industries, which can be ascribed to the industry, both directly and indirectly.

As ocean ecosystems continue to deteriorate in the face of human induced pressures, marine management professionals are increasingly being urged to predict the impacts of various activities on ocean ecosystems. Many ecosystem interactions are still not adequately understood, so managers often turn to scientists to provide data and analysis on impacts resulting from specific actions. One important physical ocean process in need of more empirical data is microscale turbulence. Because it is responsible for mixing across isopycnal surfaces in stratified waters, turbulence is important in many physical, chemical and biological processes in the ocean. An elementary description of turbulence and mixing is presented along with a summary of the role of turbulence in marine ecosystems. In order to be of use to scientists, turbulence must be measured over large areas of the ocean. This paper presents a discussion of techniques for measuring turbulence. Measurements of turbulence are specialized and costly. A new microstructure data acqusition system was developed to acquire microstructure data eight times faster than present methods allow. The design details of the high-speed microstructure data acquisition system called MicroSoar are presented along with some preliminary data obtained from its deployment on actual cruises.

In this dissertation, we discuss a reading profiling system, a biological data visualization system and a sports visualization system. Self-tracking is getting increasingly popular in the field of personal informatics. Reading profiling can be used as a personal data collection method. We present UUAT, an unintrusive user attention tracking system. In UUAT, we used user interaction data to develop technologies that help to pinpoint a users reading region (RR). Based on computed RR and user interaction data, UUAT can identify a readers reading struggle or interest. A biomarker is a measurable substance that may be used as an indicator of a particular disease. We developed CancerVis for visual and interactive analysis of cancer data and demonstrate how to apply this platform in cancer biomarker research. CancerVis provides interactive multiple views from different perspectives of a dataset. The views are synchronized so that users can easily link them to a same data entry. Furthermore, CancerVis supports data mining practice in cancer biomarker, such as visualization of optimal cutpoints and cutthrough exploration. Tennis match summarization helps after-live sports consumers assimilate an interested match. We developed TennisVis, a comprehensive match summarization and visualization platform. TennisVis offers chart- graph for a client to quickly get match facts. Meanwhile, TennisVis offers various queries of tennis points to satisfy diversified client preferences (such as volley shot, many-shot rally) of tennis fans. Furthermore, TennisVis offers video clips for every single tennis point and a recommendation rating is computed for each tennis play. A case study shows that TennisVis identifies more than 75% tennis points in full time match.

In general, profiling sensors are low-cost crude imagers that typically utilize a sparse detector array, whereas traditional cameras employ a dense focal-plane array. Profiling sensors are of particular interest in applications that require classification of a sensed object into broad categories, such as human, animal, or vehicle. However, profiling sensors have many other applications in which reliable classification of a crude silhouette or profile produced by the sensor is of value. The notion of a profiling sensor was first realized by a Near-Infrared (N-IR), retro-reflective prototype consisting of a vertical column of sparse detectors. Alternative arrangements of detectors have been implemented in which a subset of the detectors have been offset from the vertical column and placed at arbitrary locations along the anticipated path of the objects of interest. All prior work with the N-IR, retro-reflective profiling sensors has consisted of wired detectors. This thesis surveys prior work and advances this work with a wireless profiling sensor prototype in which each detector is a wireless sensor node and the aggregation of these nodes comprises a profiling sensor’s field of view. In this novel approach, a base station pre-processes the data collected from the sensor nodes, including data realignment, prior to its classification through a back-propagation neural network. Such a wireless detector configuration advances deployment options for N-IR, retro-reflective profiling sensors.

This thesis explores whether scanner data can be used to inform Consumer Price Index (CPI) construction, with particular reference to the issues of substitution bias and choice of aggregation dimensions. The potential costs and benefits of using scanner data are reviewed. Existing estimates of substitution bias are found to show considerable variation. An Australian scanner data set is used to estimate substitution bias for six different aggregation methods and for fixed base and superlative indexes. Direct and chained indexes are also calculated. Estimates of substitution bias are found to be highly sensitive to both the method of aggregation used and whether direct or chained indexes were used. The ILO (2004) recommends the use of dissimilarity indexes to determine the issue of when to chain. This thesis provides the first empirical study of dissimilarity indexes in this context. The results indicate that dissimilarity indexes may not be sufficient to resolve the issue. A Constant Elasticity of Substitution (CES) index provides an approximate estimate of substitution-bias-free price change, without the need for current period expenditure weights. However, an elasticity parameter is needed. Two methods, referred to as the algebraic and econometric methods, were used to estimate the elasticity parameter. The econometric approach involved the estimation of a system of equations proposed by Diewert (2002a). This system has not been estimated previously. The results show a relatively high level of substitution at the elementary aggregate level, which supports the use a Jevons index, rather than Carli or Dutot indexes, at this level. Elasticity parameter estimates were found to vary considerably across time, and statistical testing showed that elasticity parameter estimates were significantly different across estimation methods. Aggregation is an extremely important issue in the compilation of the CPI. However, little information exists about 'appropriate' aggregation methods. Aggregation is typically recommended over 'homogenous' units. An hedonic framework is used to test for item homogeneity across four supermarket chains and across all stores within each chain. This is a novel approach. The results show that treating the same good as homogenous across stores which belong to the same chain may be recommended.

It is intuitively understood that the age of Big Data – and the technological phenomenon of Big Data Analytics - is upon us. Undoubtedly, they have opened up a new perspective on reality; it is through technological changes such as these that nowadays we try to understand the world. In the digital world, for commercial business-to-consumer transactions, the consumer is in a weaker position than the business The consumer shops at a distance and increasingly relies on online platforms to come to a decision. In addition, many traders provide products or services in exchange for the consumer’s personal data, which are then used to further profile consumers. This state-of-the-art should be reflected in the law, ensuring the transparency of online marketplaces, giving enforceable rights to consumers, and providing dissuasive sanctions against rogue traders. In light of the impact of Big Data Analytics, this thesis investigates the profiling of consumers through Big Data Analytics, with the main focus on the interplay between the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and European Union Unfair Commercial Practice Directive (UCPD). Hence, this research project involves a detailed analysis of the GDPR and UCPD in consumer profiling via Big Data Analytics, addressing the issue of consumer and data protection law as it may be applied comparably and in a complementary manner to the data economy. Considering the interplay between the GDPR and the UCPD, this research project maps out the existing regulatory rules applicable inside European Union concerning consumer profiling via Big Data Analytics. The mapping of the current regulatory rules relating to consumer profiling by Big Data Analytics includes comprehensive data collection, comprising norms for data protection and the meaning of unfair commercial practice in the European Union. Therefore, the research project generates comprehensive information on the legal status quo – what is permitted and what is not, what may be legally contentious, and where there are legal uncertainties or gaps. The project conducts a normative inquiry on whether and how data protection and the meaning of unfair commercial practice inside the European Union address consumer data and consumer profiling questions through Big Data Analytics. In addition, this research project takes a comparative approach regarding the application of the UCPD and the processing of personal data inside the European Union. The importance of this research is not confined to the legal sphere. It is also significant in the economic area because personal consumer data, in the digital market, are economic assets. They are used to develop market services, consumer profiles, and, ultimately, to influence consumer behaviour. Additionally, research may be helpful in the sphere of technology science. Predictive Big Data Analytics, indeed, depends on the data collected. The quality of the collected data is the main risk in terms of accuracy and completeness. If the data collected for Big Data Analytics and its ability to forecast behaviour excludes some consumers due to bias, the quality of the data and reliability of the foecasts becomes questionable. This may have discriminatory effects on consumers. In relation to the quality of the collected consumer data used in Big Data Analytics, data protection law and the meaning of privacy play a very significant role. Further interpretation of consumer profiling by Big Data Analytics can be useful to develop new and better solutions for the application of Big Data Analytics as a technology tool. Consequently, the research aims to reach a solid conclusion from the data, available to the public and easily accessible and reusable by scientists and experts.

The paper presents a text analytics framework that analyses online reviews to explore how consumer-perceived negativity corresponding to the supply chain propagates over time and how it affects car sales. In particular, the framework integrates aspect-level sentiment analysis using SentiWordNet, time-series decomposition, and bias-corrected least square dummy variable (LSDVc) – a panel data estimator. The framework facilitates the business community by providing a list of consumers’ contemporary interests in the form of frequently discussed product attributes; quantifying consumer-perceived performance of supply chain (SC) partners and comparing the competitors; and a model assessing various firms’ sales performance. The proposed framework demonstrated to the automobile supply chain using a review dataset received from a renowned car-portal in India. Our findings suggest that consumer-voiced negativity is maximum for dealers and minimum for manufacturing and assembly related features. Firm age, GDP, and review volume significantly influence car sales whereas the sentiments corresponding to SC partners do not. The proposed research framework can help the manufacturers in inspecting their SC partners; realising consumer-cited critical car sales influencers; and accurately predicting the sales, which in turn can help them in better production planning, supply chain management, marketing, and consumer relationships.

Digital image processing techniques have many significant applications in industry. In this thesis, we focus on three problems in digital image processing. These three problems involve halftone images, information encoding and decoding, image alignment, and deep learning.

Specifically, the first problem is based on data-bearing halftone images, which are an aesthetically pleasing alternative to barcodes. We address the issues generated in the camera captured image alignment process. We perform some theoretical analysis and validate it by simulation. We also provide an optimal solution to the problem.

The second problem is about the alignment technique on a 3D surface. We develop a pipeline of surfaces coding to solve the alignment issues on 3D surfaces, which includes oblique surfaces and cylindrical surfaces.

The third problem is related to image retrieval. We propose a deep learning based solution to the fashion image retrieval task. Fashion image retrieval is significant to improve the customers’ experience in online shopping. A fast, accurate shopping item information retrieval system based on the customers’ uploaded image has been built by us. A novel solution is provided, and it achieves state-of-art accuracy in shopping items’ information retrieval.

The aim of this study was to determine the factors influencing readership of electronic news via the Internet. The status of printed news in the changing news environment was also investigated in the light of increasing electronic news readership. In order to achieve this aim, current electronic news readers were probed on their Internet news readership. The findings indicated that although traditional printed news was still very widely read, the shift amongst Internet users seemed to be towards reading more electronic news in the future. This study found that the two most significant factors that will lead to an increase in electronic news readership are the following: • This medium being accessed free of charge, i.e. where no monthly Internet subscriptions need to be paid. This has been achieved through free Internet access via ABSA since 16 February 2001; and • an improvement in the speed of access. The fact that traditional printed newspapers can be read in an informal environment seemed to be the single most important factor in maintaining its popularity.

Tourism can be classified either as urban tourism or as rural tourism, and it is one of the fastest growing industries globally. Rural tourism is usually associated with rural development because it has strong linkages to rural resources; but it remains underdeveloped compared to urban tourism. This underdevelopment of rural tourism serves as a motivation for this study whose aim is to examine the factors affecting the perceived satisfaction of rural tourists especially in this digital world where Information Communication and Technology (ICTs) is pervasive. In fact, ICT has transformed the travel industry in a remarkable way. The objectives of this study were: I) to select suitable theories that can explain the perceived satisfaction of rural tourists; ii) to design a conceptual model of the factors affecting the perceived satisfaction of rural tourists; iii) to empirically test the planned conceptual model of the perceived satisfaction of rural tourists, and, iv) to recommend measures to be taken for the improvement of the satisfaction levels of rural tourists to the point where they can significantly contribute to the full development of rural tourism. These objectives were achieved using content analysis of existing literature on rural tourism satisfaction and through a survey of tourists from the Malealea Lodge which is located in the Mafeteng District, in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. The results of this study are the following: I) the push and pull motivation theory was selected to explain the perceived satisfaction of rural tourists; ii) rural tourism demographics, their push and pull motivation, and their level of ICT adoption were hypothesized as the factors that affect tourists satisfaction with their rural tourism experiences; iii) the satisfaction of rural tourists with their rural tourism experience is affected by their occupations (demographic factor), by their level of ICT adoption, and by their pull motivation; and this satisfaction is not affected by other demographic attributes nor by the push motivation of rural tourists; iv) it is recommended that rural tourism marketing be increased in order to attract clients from other regions besides Africa and Europe and other age groups apart from young Africans which were found by xiii this study to be the biggest rural tourism clientele group, and that peace and security be maintained in rural tourism destinations as these two attributes were found to have an effect on the perceived satisfaction of rural tourism. Finally, more research should be conducted on the effect of ICT adoption on rural tourism satisfaction.

Antes da Era Digital, a personalização de um preço para corresponder à disposição de pagar do consumidor era considerada inatingível. No entanto, essa prática comercial agora pode ser alcançada através do processamento de dados pessoais e da elaboração do perfil comportamental do consumidor, utilizando técnicas relacionadas com Big Data e Big Analytics. Isto mereceu a atenção do Direito Europeu, como o demonstra o novo requisito de informação pré-contratual trazido pela Diretiva de Modernização, atualmente a aguardar transposição. A sua redação é concisa e o seu contexto é alargado em certa medida pelo Considerando 45, que aponta para o motivo da necessidade de informar os consumidores: de modo a poderem ter em conta os potenciais riscos nas suas decisões de compra trazidos pela personalização dos preços. Este trabalho começa por situar o assunto conceitualmente, juntamente com seu fundo económico e a perceção geral do público acerca disto. A perspetiva adotada não pressupõe distinção prévia entre preços personalizados maiores ou menores do que o uniforme, com algumas exceções destacadas quando relevantes. Essa escolha é justificada pela noção de que, em qualquer situação, uma empresa que utiliza essa estratégia de preços fá-lo com o objetivo de maximizar os lucros. Na análise jurídica, argumenta-se que o processamento de dados pessoais (como a elaboração de perfis comportamentais) é uma condição essencial para estimar o preço de reserva do consumidor. Assim, o Regulamento Geral de Proteção de Dados é aplicável. Além disso, o consentimento do titular dos dados apresenta-se como o único fundamento legal viável para esse propósito específico. Uma ressalva sobre preços derivados de perfis comportamentais é o risco de vieses ocultos revelarem que, de fato, estes basearam-se em características protegidas. A questão da transparência é central para a investigação sob a perspetiva do direito do consumo, uma vez que este quadro jurídico se esforça por capacitar os indivíduos com o conhecimento que precisam para tomar decisões informadas, sem obstruir a autonomia das empresas. Outra disposição da Diretiva de Modernização relativa à transparência dos preços para os consumidores é examinada paralelamente ao tópico central – nomeadamente, as regras de redução de preços e a sua potencial interação. Por fim, as considerações conclusivas oferecidas apontam que o novo requisito de informação é um passo na direção certa. No entanto, é necessário ampliar o seu escopo para realmente habilitar os consumidores para enfrentarem os riscos que os preços personalizados podem trazer para suas decisões de compra.
Before the Digital Era, the personalisation of a price to match a consumer’s willingness to pay was thought to be unattainable. However, this commercial practice can now be achieved through the processing of personal data and profiling of consumer behaviour utilising techniques related to Big Data and Big Analytics. This merited the attention of European Law, as shown by the new pre-contractual information requirement brought by the Modernisation Directive, currently awaiting transposition. Its wording is concise, and its context is expanded to some extent by the Recital 45, which points to the reason behind the need to inform consumers: to enable them to take into account the potential risks in their purchasing decision brought by price personalisation. This work starts by situating the matter conceptually, along with its economic background and the public’s general perception about it. The perspective presumes no prior distinction between personalised prices that are either higher or lower than the uniform fee, with a few exceptions highlighted when relevant. This choice is justified by the notion that in either situation, a business employing this pricing strategy is doing so with the goal of maximising profits. In the legal analysis, it is argued that personal data processing (such as behaviour profiling) is an essential condition for estimating the consumer’s reservation price. Thus, the General Data Protection Regulation is applicable. Additionally, the data subject’s consent presents itself as the sole viable lawful grounds for this specific purpose. One caveat of prices derived from profiling is the risk of hidden biases turning out to reveal it was, in fact, based on a protected characteristic. The issue of transparency is central to the investigation under a consumer law perspective, as this legal framework strives to enable individuals with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions, while not hindering businesses’ autonomy. Another provision from the Modernisation Directive regarding prices’ transparency towards consumers is examined alongside the central topic – namely, price reduction rules, and their potential interplay. Lastly, the conclusive remarks offered point out that the new information requirement is a step in the right direction. However, it is necessary to broaden its scope to truly empower consumers to face the risks personalised prices could bring to their purchasing decisions.

Our connections to the digital world are invoked by brands, but the intersection of branding and interaction design is still an under-investigated area. Particularly, current websites are designed not only to support essential user tasks, but also to communicate an institution's intended brand values and traits. What we do not yet know, however, is which design factors affect which aspect of a brand. To demystify this issue, three sub-projects were conducted. The first project developed a systematic approach for evaluating the branding effectiveness of content-intensive websites (BREW). BREW gauges users' brand perceptions on four well-known branding constructs: brand as product, brand as organization, user image, and brand as person. It also provides rich guidelines for eBranding researchers in regard to planning and executing a user study and making improvement recommendations based on the study results. The second project offered a standardized perceived usability questionnaire entitled DEEP (design-oriented evaluation of perceived web usability). DEEP captures the perceived website usability on five design-oriented dimensions: content, information architecture, navigation, layout consistency, and visual guidance. While existing questionnaires assess more holistic concepts, such as ease-of-use and learnability, DEEP can more transparently reveal where the problem actually lies. Moreover, DEEP suggests that the two most critical and reliable usability dimensions are interface consistency and visual guidance. Capitalizing on the BREW approach and the findings from DEEP, a controlled experiment (N=261) was conducted by manipulating interface consistency and visual guidance of an anonymized university website to see how these variables may affect the university's image. Unexpectedly, consistency did not significantly predict brand image, while the effect of visual guidance on brand perception showed a remarkable gender difference. When visual guidance was significantly worsened, females became much less satisfied with the university in terms of brand as product (e.g., teaching and research quality) and user image (e.g., students' characteristics). In contrast, males' perceptions of the university's brand image stayed the same in most circumstances. The reason for this gender difference was revealed through a further path analysis and a follow-up interview, which inspired new research directions to unpack even more the nexus between branding and interaction design.

The study investigated the application of the crime threat analysis process at station level within the Nelson Mandela Metro City area with the objective of determining inhibiting factors (constraints) and best practices. Qualitative research methodology was applied and interviews were conducted with crime analysts and specialised investigators/intelligence analysts. The research design can be best described as descriptive and explorative in nature. The crime threat analysis process embroils the application of various crime analysis techniques and the outcomes thereof intends to have a dual purpose of generating operational crime management information in assisting crime prevention initiatives and crime detection efforts, mainly focussing on the criminal activities of group offenders (organised crime related), repeat offenders and serial offenders. During the study it became evident that crime analysts understand and thus apply the crime threat analysis process indifferently, which impeded on the relevancy and the utilisation thereof as an effective crime management tool.
