Abstract (sommario):
This article uses the 1931 strike by the Lima bakery workers' union as an optic through which to study the politicisation of industrial relations in the context of the emergence of populist politics in Peru. Faced with a loss of control over the bakery workforce and a hostile and ineffective system of collective bargaining, the union turned to an alternative strategy in its attempts to gain control over the workforce and the productive process. It presented itself as a bulwark against labour militancy and sought to establish political ties to the Sánchez Cerro government. Although the strategy was largely unsuccessful, this case study illustrates the extent to which Peruvian workers played an active role in the construction of populist politics in the 1930s.

Abstract (sommario):
Christian Chevandier's Cheminots en Greve is a social, political, and institutional history of railroad workers in France from 1848 to 2001. It is told from the standpoint of the role of strikes in forming the occupational identity of these workers, known in France as cheminots (Chevandier finds the earliest use of the expression dating back to 1898; by the 1930s the Academie Francaise officially recognized it as a French word). Cheminots belong to various crafts and trades. They drive the trains, repair locomotives and rolling stock in shops and factories, sell tickets in stations and collect them in trains. Although the book is largely structured around a chronological account of railway strikes, Chevandier looks beyond the strike for sources of cheminot identity. These include the evolving structure of the French railroad system from private companies to state ownership, the role of skill and technological change, and especially union strategies, structures, and above all divisions. Along the way he revisits earlier treatments of French labor and railworker history, and takes up old historiographical controversies debating, confirming, and refuting well-known scholars from Annie Kriegel to historians of a younger generation like George Ribeill and Atsushi Fukasawa.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper aims to examine the interplay between individual subjectivities and collective action during a strike which occurred at a moment of political transition in Indonesia from Suharto's authoritarian regime to a more democratically inclined government. It attempts to highlight some of the problems in understanding the nature of protest and collective action and the construction of workers' identities. By following the sequence of a strike, we are able to see the collaborations and conflicts between the leaders and those who are central in the protest action and those who are at the margins; between those who join and those who do not join but hope to obtain the benefits of the results. This also means that it provides us with a better understanding of the complexities involved when we refer to “consciousness”, “identities”, and “experiences” as analytical constructs. Such a focus can counter the often simplistic links made between action and intent, between the economic circumstances and political action.

Abstract (sommario):
John D. Rockefeller, Jr.’s reactions to the Colorado Coal Wars resulted in the creation of the Employee Representation Plan, better known as the Rockefeller Plan. While labor historians identify the Rockefeller Plan as a dynamic shift in labor-management relations, this article focuses on the lesser studied portion of Rockefeller's reconstruction plan, his program of soft reform and its effect on the construction of masculinity in the industrial West. For Junior, restructuring the work environment and the relationship between management and labor left reconstruction incomplete, and thus vulnerable to future crises. Beginning in 1914, Rockefeller provided support for local and national social organizations to work throughout southern Colorado in order to impart middle-class values to his workers. He believed that reconstructing their social and cultural values—from language to sexual behavior—would remove any socialist influences, and create a better workforce. By applying this type of pressure, Junior helped create an environment that supported local anti-vice movements, and validated a growing belief that law enforcement and legislation could be used to curb vice. Following the deadly strike, Rockefeller's attempts to transform his public image and industrial workers not only have implications for labor history, but also social and gender histories, in particular the construction of masculinity in the American West.As I understand you are a member of the Baptist Church. So am I. But I think you must be a very inconsistent one. You teach Sunday school in New York and let the devil run your business in Colorado. You and your managers are totally responsible for all the bloodshed that occurred in Colorado. If you had lived up to the law there would have been no strike in Colorado. It is human nature to suffer rather than resent and men do not go on strikes for the fun of it.1

Abstract (sommario):
Based on archival material and relevant literature, this text analyses and presents the activities of the labour movement in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the first years after the end of the First World War. During this period, the struggle for workers'rights, mostly through strike actions, resulted, among other things, in an increase in wages, the introduction of eight-hour working days in most companies, the exercise of the right to elect workers' commissioners and trade unions. The workers managed to get other benefits related to the economic position of the workers, such as retail co-operatives, apartments, assistance in purchasing work suits, etc. Workers' representatives fought for a radically better position and a new place in society. In addition to eight-hour working days, higher wages and other demands to improve the material position of workers, strikes against the political disenfranchisement of workers were conducted during this period, as well as for political freedoms and democratisation of political life in the country. During 1919 and 1920, several strikes about pay were organised by miners, construction workers and metalworkers in the forest industry, catering workers and employees in Sarajevo, Tuzla, Bijeljina, Brčko, Zenica, Breza, Mostar, Zavidovići, Dobrljin, Lješljani, Maslovarama and Rogatica. It was part of over 125 strikes by workers in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the period of legal activity of the Socialist Labour Party of Yugoslavia (SLPY) (c), i.e. the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (CPY) and its close trade unions. At the initiative of the SLPY (c) and united syndicates, public political assemblies were organised in Sarajevo, Tuzla, Zenica, Mostar, Brčko, Derventa, Vareš and Drvar, at which demands were put forward to dissolve the authorities, and organise democratic elections for the Constituent Assembly and demobilise the army. The aggravation of the political situation in the first post-war years was noticeable in many local communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In a number of cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, there were physical confrontations between workers and security bodies of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. One such example occurred, in Zenica in mid-October 1920, when police banned the Communists' attempt to hold an assembly despite a previously imposed ban. On that occasion, the gathered mass of 2,500 workers refused to disperse and demanded that the assembly be held. After the police and the gendarmerie tried to disperse the gathered workers, there was open conflict. Workers threw stones at security officials, and they responded by firing firearms. The rally was eventually broken up, one worker was wounded and twelve workers were hurt during a clash with police. Owing to the increasing engagement of workers' representatives, the political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina worsened. It was not uncommon to have open conflicts between workers and government officials. After the collapse of the Husino uprising, the position of workers deteriorated. Also, this paper discusses the impact of the revolutions in Eastern and Central Europe on the labour movement in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: In any aging society, the sociolegal construction of intergenerational relationships is of great importance. This study conducts an international comparison of a specific judicial issue: whether active labor unions have the legal right to strike for the purpose of improving the benefits given to nonactive workers (specifically, pensioners). Method: A comparative case law methodology was used. The texts of three different Supreme Court cases—in the United States, Canada, and Israel—were analyzed and compared. Findings: Despite the different legal outcomes, all three court rulings reflect a disregard of known and relevant social gerontology theories of intergenerational relationships. Conclusion: Social gerontological theories can play an important role in both understanding and shaping judicial policies and assisting the courts in choosing their sociojudicial narratives.

Abstract (sommario):
Mineral construction materials industry in the years 1971–1981. Investment boom, crises, and the birth of “Solidarity” In 1971, the new leadership of the Polish United Workers’ Party, headed by Edward Gierek, introduced a new economic strategy, called the “strategy of dynamic growth”. This strategy brought about positive results, for instance in the sector of mineral construction materials. In the 1970s, this sector underwent intense development and modernization. In the end, the strategy was not consistently implemented, mainly due to the lack of sufficient financing. Over time, its initial success was overshadowed by the intensifying social and economic crisis, which resulted with conflicts in workplaces, among other consequences. In the summer of 1980, workers went on strike also in mineral construction material factories. This was followed by the formation of “Solidarity” branches in individual workplaces and at the national level.

Abstract (sommario):
Garlic (Allium sativum) is an old cultivated plant that has been used by man for millennia for its extraordinary taste and great healing power [1]. The earliest records of the use of garlic come from Egypt. The ancient Egyptians were well aware of its healing properties and ate garlic in large quantities. A Papyrus from 1600 BC depicts a strike by workers working on the construction of the pyramid, protesting that they were not given garlic. The well-known Ebers papyrus, a collection of medical prescriptions 3500 years old, mentions the use of garlic in many diagnoses such as heart weakness, headache, intestinal parasites, eczema, gynecological problems, etc. [2]. The ancient Greeks and Romans also highly valued garlic as a medicinal vegetable. They were convinced that garlic cures coughs and clears the lungs of phlegm and pus. Doctors in China and India consider garlic to be a versatile medicine, treating everything with it: from colds to "aging" [3]. Garlic was first subjected to scientific investigation by Louis Pasteur in the mid-19th century when he studied its bactericidal effects [4]. Since then, garlic has been the subject of constant interest for many researchers.

Abstract (sommario):
The article begins with the statement based on current research, that Poznań 1956 protests are little represented in literature. Subsequently, the article analyses the construction of character and temporal composition of several novels about the Poznań 1956 protests. The novels are arranged chronologically and divided into two parts: censored ones and those published without official approval and censorship. The first group includes Jeszcze miłość by Bogusław Kogut, Odyseja, odyseja by Marian Grześczak and Wióry by Krystyna Kofta. The second group includes Krótki żywot bohatera pozytywnego by Piotr Guzy, Ciemnia by Bogusława Latawiec, Krew by Andrzej Górny, and Węzeł by Józef Ratajczak. The first group, true to the course of history, represent the rise of the political thaw and the party regaining control over situation. The second group, because of the time of writing, cover a longer time and tend to universalize the theme. In novelistic representations of Poznań 1956 protests there are two strains: uprising-themed and strike-themed. It turns out that the latter is the least present, because most novelistic characters are party-members and intelligentsia, whereas workers and ordinary people are relegated to the background. Plotlines are arranged biographically, not chronologically, because the novels are narrated as internal monologues with retrospective memories. The novels written by authors from Poznań, or related to Poznań, focus on the provintial character of the city, as opposed to the centralist influence of Warsaw.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The nationwide strike by 70 000 construction workers between 8 and 15 July 2009 was unprecedented and significant in several respects. This was the first national strike on 2010 World Cup sites by South African construction workers and was therefore an historic event. A second key feature of the strike was the unity displayed by workers and trade unions within a sector organised by several trade unions. Engineering and building workers came out on strike, with the Building Construction & Allied Workers Union (BCAWU) and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) standing together as their representative organisations. A third feature of the strike was the widespread sympathy for it by the South African public and media. This was despite it potentially setting back progress with World Cup projects. Fourthly, the pressure placed upon the trade unions' negotiating team by the Ministry of Labour and the FIFA Local Organising Committee (LOC) proved lethal in undermining their, assisting in causing them to dilute their trade union demands and demobilising the national strike.

“The Thailand Workers’ Strike in Kaohsiung” took place in 2005, known as the one of the largest foreign work’s protest in Taiwan. Since the strike here have been many research papers done on this event. This study has combined “media research” and “the interaction between social movement and news media” as a tool to explore the relationship between news coverage, media organization and news resources. This study is based on the theory of “social constructionism” and have adopted “frame” as the analyzing tools. By analyzing the news coverage, we can understand how the frames have completed with others and how the issues have developed over time. Thus allowed us too see this social issues as a process of different resources’s participation of defining this accident. This study also employed the in-depth interviews with social activist group to find out their ways of meaning constructing and their strategies on employment of media. Different from the hegemony theory, it suggested that the media could be very important political resources for social organization. This study continues to interview the journalists to explore the influences that media organization, journalists and news resources might have on the coverage. The conclusion indicates that the officials and employers occupy the route of media, as opposed to the foreign workers. However, the finding shows that the activists can construct meaning successfully by using specific strategies. It also concluded several factors which affects the cognition of journalist and the way of report. The implication of this study is to bring the “structure” into consideration. Moreover, it is suggested that we should not ignore the “autonomy” and “agency” of foreign workers and organizations. Some implications are also proposed to help the media to report foreign workers correctly and critically.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter scrutinises violence between workers during strikes. Confrontations occurred not only at the factory gates, as strikers attempted to obstruct workers, but also in the streets that led to the workplace. Political groups often became involved in industrial disputes. Left-wingers sought to extend the strike beyond the workplace through demonstrations, meetings, and marches. Right-wingers sought to ensure the freedom to work, fearful that factory occupations would precede communist revolution. Strikes provided an important opportunity for female political activism. Women strikers stood on picket lines, forcing back strike-breakers and often taking part in punishment attacks of blackleg labour. The factory, mine, and construction yard thus became important sites in the violent political confrontations in interwar France.

This chapter highlights Mother Warren's profligate paternalism and century-long bond between local owners and its loyal workforce that came to an end with the mill's surprising unionization in 1967. It reviews Scott Paper's purchase of the S. D. Warren Company, which was a shocking end to the mill's local identity. It also discusses how Warren and its workers were swept by national currents that changed the economic and labor landscape throughout the United States when the mill's paternalism broke down. The chapter talks about Howard Reiche Jr., who worked cooperatively with the new unions and embraced their constructive role in rectifying Warren's outdated pay and supervisory practices. It examines the conflict in Westbrook that led to two strikes as more socially and geographically distant corporate leaders narrowed the space for any continued paternalism.

Abstract (sommario):
On the construction site the enforcement of labor discipline is mostly based on personal whim. Rules are made up on the spot and punishments depend on the mood or the goodwill of individual Chinese foremen. This type of labor regime leads to a loss of managerial credibility and inspires indiscipline on the part of Ethiopian workers. Subversion can be subtle, expressed with humor and through play, but transgressions can also evolve into open defiance, such as work stoppages and labor strikes. Voting with their feet is yet another strategy that Ethiopian laborers employ to play one Chinese enterprise off against the other, forcing management to increase wages and improve employment conditions in the process. Taken together, these subversive acts challenge Chinese managers, so much so that they are disciplined by their own workers.

Abstract (sommario):
Lord Bew has argued in his Ireland: The Politics of Enmity 1789-2006 that the failure of the power-sharing experiment in 1973-74, and especially on the proposal for a Council of Ireland, was largely the product of inflated nationalist aspirations encountering raised unionist anxieties amidst exaggerated official assumptions about what was politically achievable. These three As can be said to have fostered a fourth A - ambiguity - which was destructive of the project for political stability. If these four As together constitute a template for instability, there appears at first sight to be an irony. Has not ‘constructive ambiguity’ contributed to the enduring peace since the 1998 Belfast/Good Friday Agreement? This chapter suggests that the experience of 1973-74 still applies in Northern Ireland and that it is the absence of ambiguity which makes aspiration, anxiety and assumption institutionally manageable.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter introduces the main arguments of the book and creates a broad framework, outlining its theoretical and methodological approaches. Taking its cue from Craig’s woodcut of Hecuba that features on the cover, it presents engagements with Greek tragedy that were not necessarily text-based or resulted in specific productions of plays. Rather, in ways that mirror both Hamlet’s and Craig’s quoting of Hecuba, it sets out to explore the kinds of experiments in performance that were facilitated, embodied, experienced and experimented with by such recourse and remobilisation of Greek tragedy. Sometimes these experiments reached performance and were successful, but usually they were failures – creative, constructive failures but failures nonetheless, all enacted through quotation and repetition of notions of Hellenism. It presents a summary of the chapters that follow and the ways that the term Hellenism itself is re-worked through these modernist experiments in performance, as embodied, hybrid, geopolitically international, and not necessarily ‘classical’ in the strict philological sense. It presents the modernist encounter with Greek tragedy as rehearsing the ancient quarrel between poetry and philosophy, especially when redefining the ethico-political aspects of theatricality and spectatorship, and stresses the Platonic aspects of much modernist theorization and experimentation in performance.

Abstract (sommario):
Model workers have made outstanding contributions to the construction of socialist modernization. In the new era, vigorously carrying forward the spirit of model workers is conducive to creating a social atmosphere in which everyone advocates labor and strives for excellence, thus enabling people to work together to achieve the goal of the second century. The spirit of model workers has an important connotation of the times, but with the continuous promotion of the socialist market economy, there are prominent problems in the process of carrying forward the spirit of model workers, such as insufficient publicity, weakening of the security mechanism, and the absence of model consciousness. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the media publicity function, improve the model worker's spiritual system, and activate the model worker's model consciousness. Carrying forward the spirit of model workers in the new era has accumulated important strength for practicing the core socialist values, cultivating a good social atmosphere, and realizing the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Abstract (sommario):
Nowadays, the use of wood is becoming increasingly relevant in the field of construction and design, and as a result, this material is becoming essential in construction materials market. However, the current skills of workers and apprentices are not up to the new demands of the market, and this is because the knowledge and skills obtained through the WBL do not meet the needs in the workplace for timber constructions and workings. In addition, strict renovation requirements and political measures that seek to stimulate the transformation of existing buildings make this lack of skills even more noticeable. Thus, in this article we will see how this UP-WOOD project proposes to pay attention to the need of improving skills and abilities in this sector, through a work-based learning system VET (Vocational Education and Training), so current and future demand of efficient energetic solutions can be solved.

Abstract (sommario):
The phenomenon of COVID-19 has introduced critical challenges in the architecture, engineering, and the entire construction industry. A safe Working Cycle is a Japanese concept. It incorporates to enhances the effective implementation of safety management systems, thereby helping to prevent health and safety issues. This research mainly aims at identifying the strategies for overcoming barriers to implementing the Safe Working Cycle (SWC) concept during the COVID-19 pandemics in Sri Lanka. The research study focused more on reducing health-related illnesses caused by COVID-19 than on the other physical safety issues at the construction site. In such a critical health issue, the protection of human resources, an essential part of the construction industry, should be prioritized. The aim of the Study was reached through the sequential mixed method. The semi-structured expert interviews were initially conducted, and after that questionnaire survey was achieved among health and safety officers in construction projects in Sri Lanka. In the semi-structured interviews, data were analyzed using Nvivo thematic analysis software and questionnaire survey; M.S. Excel analyzed the collected data. Following the findings, several potential barriers were arisen to implementing the SWC concept in the Sri Lankan construction industry: including limited Budget allocation, poor safety attitude, limited land space, strict project schedules, and unawareness of workers. Further, this Study also indicated several potential practical strategies to overcome these barriers identified for SWC implementation. Such as; Implementing the COVID-19 bio bubble concept, Organizing regular toolbox meetings, demonstrating sign boards specific to this new concept, arranging separate systematic time slots, buildup a good communication network. The safe Working Cycle (SWC) is not currently practised in Sri Lankan construction culture. However, health and safety professionals are familiar with almost every aspect of the Safe Working Cycle (SWC); therefore, it is possible to put this into practice in the Sri Lankan construction industry.

Abstract (sommario):
The laws concerning safety on worksite have become more strict year on year being that topic always more important. The main causes of injuries are workers unawareness and structural failures of machineries, i.e. cranes, or scaffolds. In order to prevent injuries, an accurate maintenance is mandatory. During the last years a new trend in maintenance has arisen in opposition to programmed maintenance. Monitoring the system, the condition based maintenance may prevent accidents avoiding unnecessary stops of the machineries and the corresponding reduced returns. In this paper a health monitoring algorithm for a typology of construction machinery (the concrete displacing booms) is proposed. The proposed algorithm is based on the knowledge of geometrical and dynamical parameters of the boom, estimated through a stand-alone self-learning procedure. This feature makes the developed diagnostics system predisposed to be easily extended to other machineries or work fields. The common failure conditions, such as an overload or a crack propagation, are readily signaled. The algorithm has been numerically and experimentally validated on a specific test rig which reproduces a reduced scale concrete displacing boom. The results, referred to the detection of two simulated common failure conditions, are presented and discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
In carrying out construction projects, enterprises strive to obtain the highest degree of harmonization of the work of the resources involved. It is manifested in ensuring continuous and regular production with a full usage of their executive potential. The purpose of harmonization is to eliminate unjustified interruptions in the work of resources. When planning the realization of non-repetitive construction projects, one should use methods of scheduling that allow the analysis of the project model not only as a function of time. It is also important to take into account the effectiveness of using your own resources and limitations in their availability. The article analyzes the problem of harmonizing the work of crews of the general contractor, performing non-rhythmic, non-cyclical and inhomogeneous processes under the assumption of deterministic operating conditions. An important issue from the point of view of reducing the costs of crews’ employment is the continuity of their work. A mathematical model was developed concerning the problem of minimization of downtime in the work of the general contractor crews with a directively fixed time and limit of the project realization cost, taking into account the limitations in the availability of crews and the possibility to outsource works to subcontractors. The possibility of subcontracting works does not allow for a clear indication in the project model sequences of processes carried out by crews and the usage of previously developed scheduling methods. The method of solving the model (in a linear form with continuous and binary variables) is presented in the example. Additionally, the proposed method allows analyzing the impact of the amount of downtime at work on the duration of the project and the impact of the work outsourced to subcontractors on the continuity of the general contractor’s work.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Drilling and completion of the surface and intermediate sections in some fields is extremely challenging due to wellbore instability, especially accomplished with complete losses. Such circumstances lead to several time-consuming stuck pipe events, when existing standard ways of drilling did not lead to a permanent resolution of the problems. After exhausting the available conventional techniques without sustainable success, unorthodox solutions were required to justify the well delivery time and cost. Here comes the Casing While Drilling (CwD), being the most time and cost-effective solution to wellbore instability. CwD is introduced at full throttle aiming at the well cost reduction and well quality improvement. The implementation plan was divided in three phases. The first phase was a remedial solution to surface and intermediate sections drilling and casing off to prevent stuck pipe events and provide smooth well delivery performances. After successful implementation of CwD first phase, CwD was taken to the next level by shifting it from a mitigation to an optimization measure. Each step of CwD shoe-to-shoe operations was analysed to improve its performances: drill-out (D/O) of 18⅝-in shoe track with CwD, optimum drilling parameters per formation and CwD bit design. Implemented in 19 wells, CwD shoe-to-shoe performances have been brought up or even above standard rotary bottom hole assembly (BHA) benchmark. Planning for third phase is undergoing whereby CwD is aiming to optimize a well construction to reduce well delivery time, by combining surface and intermediate sections thus eliminating one casing string. Numerous challenges are being worked on including open hole (OH) isolation packer which conform to and seal with the borehole uneven surface. Special "for purpose built" expandable steel packer and stage tool have been manufactured and qualified for the specific application. A candidate well has been chosen and agreed for first trial. The key areas of improvement include, drilling and casing off the surface and intermediate sections while competing with standard rotary BHA performances and slimming down the well profile towards tremendous time and costs savings. This paper encompasses details of constructions of various wells with sufficient contingencies to combat any expected hole problems without compromising the well quality while keeping the well within budget and planned time. It also provides an analysis of the well trials that were executed during the implementation of first and second phases of CwD implementation and the captured lessons learnt which are being carried forward to the next phase. This paper provides the technique on how CwD can be used to help with three aspects of drilling, successfully mitigating holes problems by reducing OH exposure time and to eliminate drill string tripping and modifying conventional casing design to reduce well time and cost by eliminating one casing string.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper proposes some principles for fault management of longitudinal control of automated vehicles in AHS. Systems faults may be broadly divided into software and hardware. Software fault management is briefly addressed. These faults can be avoided by proper controller design, rigorous algorithm development, correct and robust code construction, simulation and real-time run test. Emphases are put on hardware faults. Hardware faults which may appear in practice are classified according to their likelihood of appearance, impact on safety, robust stability within controller bandwidth and maneuverability. The most prominent cases are those when communication and/or radar are in fault. From control viewpoint, they have very strong impact on string stability. The main difficulties in these cases are: (a) Some or all of the three parameters: relative distance, speed and acceleration, are not directly available; (b) Measurements of these parameters contains some noise; (c) Filtering and estimation of these parameters lead to some time delay and discrepancy. General principle of control strategy for each fault case is proposed. Corresponding string stability of the platoon is briefly analyzed. Consideration in this paper is in higher level. To practically implement each of these strategies will be addressed in future works.

Abstract (sommario):
The experience gained during the operation and maintenance stages of the Camisea pipeline transportation system (STD) in Peru, crossing from the Tropical jungle in the Cusco region to the coast, in Lima city, has enabled us to develop and apply techniques in construction and maintenance works focused on controlling of the vertical undermining of riverbeds and the erosion of margins at river crossings and creeks crossed by the pipeline carrying NG and NGL. According to the above, a technical assessment study was conducted of the crosses rivers and creeks that have high priority of the Camisea pipeline path, comprising — among other disciplines — hydraulic and undermining analysis, as well as an hydrologic and geo-morphological evaluation and other issues regarding general geology and geo-techniques at each crossing site. A work program was developed using the information obtained in the three sectors travelled by the (STD) in order to develop and complement works at the crossings of rivers and valleys aiming to protect the integrity of the pipeline from erosion produced by major and extraordinary floods in riverbeds and alluvial slides in narrow valleys, by means of confinement and sedimentation works. The jobs performed in rainforest, mountain and coastal terrain crossed by the pipeline considered different river morphology types — being the most common the straight, gravel braided and curved river travels — and regimes in both flow speed and width of the riverbed. From the topographic follow-up and monitoring stage on — before and after the rain season — at crossings beneath the riverbeds, it was determined that the deterioration process affecting the crossing stripe corresponds to erosion consisting in the alteration of the watercourse banks that affects the piping foundations. The works are completed considering the type of resources available at the site of the river crossing — i. e., the engineering is particular to each sector, and designing is performed upon available materials in the area. The most utilized works at river and creeks crossings on the Camisea piping system are as follows: i) protection of riverbeds and creeks slopes using gabion mesh and pads; ii) sedimentation systems on gabion mesh; iii) Energy dissipation devices at creeks crossings; iv) rip-rap–type armoring of riverbeds; v) confinement check dams; vi) marginal protection dikes; vii) marginal protection rock fill dams; viii) protection and sedimentation breakwaters, among others.

Abstract (sommario):
Construction work zones for roads pose significant safety challenges for drivers and workers, which can lead to accidents, injuries, fatalities, and property damage. Enhancing construction work-zone safety requires an understanding of the factors influencing accidents and fatalities and an evaluation of existing safety and traffic-management measures. The objective of this study was to improve work-zone safety for roadways, by connecting passive material sensing in the road with vehicle communication systems. A review of the main roadway work-zone safety literature found driver behavior, traffic congestion, and signage effectiveness to be the most significant factors. Vehicle speed, type of vehicles, type of collisions, and environmental conditions were found to have the most impact on the fatality rate in work zones. Past attempts to improve work-zone safety include adding rumble strips, more warning signs, and implementing smart-work-zone (SWZ) technologies. SWZ communication in-vehicle was found to reduce traffic speeds and promote faster and more consistent merging in the work-zone transition area. Pavement-assisted passive sensing, coupled with vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication, may offer enhanced in-vehicle speed and lane-merge warnings, which could improve driver awareness, reduce vehicle speeds, and improve work-zone safety. A laboratory-based experiment was developed to validate the theoretical configurations of smart work zones (SWZ) using passive pavement sensing, with the objective being to determine suitable spacings and inclination angles for the electromagnetic (EM) strips as speed and lane-merge warning systems, respectively. The experimental results revealed that these EM strips can estimate vehicle speed with sufficient accuracy, and the spacing of the EM-sensing strips influences the signal intensity. Additionally, the spacing and inclination angle of the EM strips influence the captured signals. This lab pilot study clearly demonstrated the potential of EM-based strips in enhancing speed and lane-merge warning systems using V2I technology for improved safety in roadway work zones.
