Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This article provides an ethnographically-based, in-depth discourse analysis of linguistic constructions of non-heteronormativity at Eurovision Song Contest press conferences. Contexts of high national salience have been found to largely support or even promote heteronormative discourses. The present study, by contrast, sets out to look at the construction of sexuality in a transnational community of practice of high European salience, in which macro-level heteronormativity has to face greater competition from the non-heteronormativity of the local context. The analysis identifies the following patterns of non-heteronormative construction: non-heteronormative talk about love song lyrics and performances, the construction of male same-sex desire, and the challenging of dominant gender discourses. Finally, it is argued that the European transnationalism of the context causes a normative shift from (nationally associated) heteronormativity to an expectation that non-heterosexual identities and desires be met with greater tolerance.

Abstract (sommario):
Dominant groups (e.g., White U.S. citizens) are more associated with “American” identity and they feel greater ownership over American national identity compared to ethnic minority groups. We extended this perception to gender and tested whether American national identity is constructed in masculine, versus feminine, terms. We examined whether U.S. men feel greater symbolic ownership over the nation and represent what it means to be a prototypical American, more than U.S. women. In Study 1, men and women considered male-associated traits more American than female-associated traits and listed more men as examples of “true” Americans than women. In Study 2, men reported higher levels of nationalism than women. Women’s nationalism was moderated by their conception of male-associated traits as American—women who viewed American identity as more masculine were less nationalistic. Men showed a stronger correlation between gender identity and American identity compared to women. However, correlations between gender identity and nationalism did not differ by participant gender. Results suggest men and masculinity are considered more American than are women and femininity. We provide support for the subgroup asymmetry hypothesis through the novel lens of gender. We discuss means of attenuating the gendered construction of national identity in terms of media, policy, and education. Abstract (sommario):
In November, 2006, the National Union of Students proposed that the men’s lifestyle magazines Nuts and Zoo be taken off university shop shelves and sold under the counter (MediaGuardian.co.uk, 13 November, 2006). This paper reviews the body of research since 2000 into the constructions of masculinity portrayed in such lifestyle magazines and suggests that to understand the messages of the magazines is to gain insight into the masculinities being constructed and their appeal for the white, male readers at whom the magazines are aimed. In turn, this reveals possible implications for counselling psychology if men are constructing masculinity in ways that may impact on mental health or on willingness to address emotional issues.

Abstract (sommario):
In setting the world record at the London Marathon in 2003, Paula Radcliffe not only beat her female competitors but also her countrymen becoming the fastest British runner of the year, male or female, making her the nation’s best hope for the Olympic Games in 2004. From this position, she garnered a significant amount of media attention, becoming Britain’s most famous runner. Yet as a representative of her nation, both symbolically and on the national team, her place remains complicated. Radcliffe’s significant accomplishments, which were in part understood as British success, were also constructed as a foil for the lack of British men’s success in racialized and gendered ways. To explicate mediated articulations of national identity, I examined UK print media constructions of Radcliffe focusing on three major events of her running career: her world record, her failure to finish at the 2004 Games, and her World Championship marathon win in 2005. I found that Radcliffe achieved conditional status as a representative of Britain, while this media coverage also maintained and buttressed gendered and racialized hierarchies in the complex construction of British identity.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper explores perceptions of entrepreneurship and innovation to discover why UK students did not engage with enterprise activities at their universities. A study involving 84 international and national university students identified stereotypical perceptions of terms such as ‘innovator’ and ‘entrepreneur’, ‘entrepreneurship’ and ‘innovation’, associating values and emotions with the development of these constructs often ignored in research on enterprise intent. There were differing perspectives on the drivers affecting engagement across international and UK students. It also emerged that the development of new interactive media technologies had influenced the process of constructing meaning for these terms, creating and reinforcing stereotypes rather than changing them.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis article examines concepts of ‘home’ and ‘abroad’ for migrants and citizens in the twilight of empire. It focuses on the ‘cheminots refoulés’, railway workers with origins in the former French Sudan (today's Republic of Mali) who were expelled from Senegal shortly after both territories declared independence, and other ‘Sudanese’ settled in Senegal, sometimes for several generations. Using newly available archives in France, Mali and Senegal, and interviews with formercheminotsand ‘Sudanese migrants’ on both sides of the border, this article seeks to historicize memories of autochthony and allochthony that have been constructed and contested in postcolonial nation-building projects. The Mali Federation carried the lingering memory of federalist political projects, but it proved untenable only months after the Federation's June 1960 independence from France. When member states declared independence from each other, the internal boundary between Senegal and the Sudanese Republic became an international border between Senegal and the Republic of Mali. In the wake of the collapse, politicians in Bamako and Dakar clamoured to redefine the ‘nation’ and its ‘nationals’ through selective remembering. Thousands ofcheminotsand ‘Sudanese migrants’ who had moved to Senegal from Sudan years (or decades) earlier were suddenly labelled ‘foreigners’ and ‘expatriates’ and faced two governments eager to see them ‘return’ to a hastily proclaimed nation state. This ‘repatriation’ allowed Republic of Mali officials to ‘perform the nation’ by (re)integrating and (re)membering the migrants in a nascent ‘homeland’. But, having circulated between Senegal and Sudan/Mali for decades, ‘Sudanese migrants’ in both states retained and invoked memories of older political communities, upsetting new national priorities. The loss of the Mali Federation raises questions about local, national and international citizenship and movement in mid-century West Africa. Examining the histories invoked to imagine postcolonial political communities, this article offers an insight into the role that memory has played in constructing and contesting the nation's central place in migration histories within Africa and beyond.

Abstract (sommario):
This article examines how Bengali masculinity has been negotiated between national and ethnic/local notions of identity and suggests a new way of understanding this issue. Within the specific historiography of Bengali masculinity, concerns regarding physical strength, courage and virility of the Bengali male have been central tropes, challenged by the colonially constructed stereotype of the effeminate Bengali. The present article maps mainly nineteenth century discourses regarding Bengali masculinity and focuses on one particular strategy of three, namely, construction of a mode of mythic-historical discourse to reclaim a supposedly more masculine past for Bengali men. This suggests the notion of national-masculine as a gendered materialisation of the compensatory agency of Bengali masculinity. Shown to occur through the articulation of buddhibal in contrast with bahubal that negotiates with the hegemonic national-masculine, this throws new light on the emerging prominence of the bhadralok concept of a sophisticated Bengali gentleman.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is both critical and pragmatic. A criticism of Mali’s recent history read in the light of the tools provided by the legal analysis, sociology and anthropology of law. This critical intent led to examine the history of Mali’s origins in a genetic perspective that has been detailed in the prolegomena. Pragmatic, the thesis puts forward proposals related to the concrete situation of Mali, along the lines of a deregulation of consciences and the re-introduction of constitutive standards into the Malian Republic. The language analysis proved valuable in meeting these two requirements. They also enabled to identify some shortcomings in legal dogma generally more anxious to graft prefabricated concepts onto African realities, rather than capture these realities with their nuances as close as possible. It therefore seemed appropriate to analyze the strategies of ordinary actors of the Malian political society. The consideration of the concepts handled by these latter accounts for the use of indigenous languages. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the analysis of Mali’s chaotic development in the aftermath of the relinquishment of the fathers’ project of independence under the double pressure of economic constraints and cultural determinants. The second part draws the relevant consequences from the point of view of constitutional theory. Thus, the thesis concludes with the proposal for reform of the system of African Unity based, upon as all the above, Bambara language’s saying : “Sleeping on the mat of others is like sleeping on the floor

Abstract (sommario):
As many other brave men between 1792 and 1815, La Tour d'Auvergne died with gallantry on the battlefield. As a simple subordinate officer, but also as the « First Grenadier of the Armies of the Republic » he was among those called « heroes » and celebrated as such throughout the 19th century.Known as an erudite man and admired for his virtues while he was still alive, one can acknowledge he wasn't a regular soldier. This thesis is not about the life of the man celebrated by many, but instead on the ways he was celebrated from the French Revolution until the Great War.In that objective, amongst all of the tools offered to us by social sciences that have rediscovered heroes and heroism over the past few years, this thesis prioritises the tool of admiration, which allows us to go over the usual heroisation-remembrance duo to give a better understanding of the mechanisms, the actors and the contexts of celebration. This process of « admiration » gives us the opportunity to understand that even if La Tour d'Auvergne was a minor hero, his glory, however, dawned so much upon him that it kept growing consistently. It also gives a better idea of the space national heroes take in the french « identitarian check-list » and thus in the process of national construction, but also republican consensus.Starting from this « case » documented by several sources, this thesis proposes the notion of « society of admiration » to describe the French society in the 19th century. To achieve that process, multiply the different scales as well as the overviews, focus on a few singular moments, and track the process of admiration for the « first grenadier » after 1918

Abstract (sommario):
Until recently, the role of women in nationalism and governance has received little scholarly attention, perhaps because men have historically exercised near exclusive control over nations and states. This is ironic because it is women who create the nation/state. The intersection between gender and nationalism can be broken down into three categories. The first category is women as biological reproducers of the nation. The second category includes women participating centrally in the ideological reproduction of the collectivity and as signifiers of ethnic/national differences. The third category involves the idea of gendered militaries and gendered wars. Women also affect the structure and power relations in the international arena as victims of various international crimes that have traditionally gone unnoticed because of the bias towards male dominance. One example is mass rape. National identity created through the construction of woman as nation allows women to be a target of war. The idea that women are symbols of national territory and identity makes targeting them a main tactic used by enemy groups. In the area of human rights, most conceptions stem from Western visions, which do not always mesh with local, tribal, or non-Western citizens. For women's rights truly to exist, human rights focus must change because it has been constructed with a male bias and understanding.

Abstract (sommario):
The main purpose of this chapter is to examine the localization of Fujoshi culture in Taiwan by situating it within the context of Japanophilia. By examining the Japanophilia phenomenon and interviewing twelve Taiwanese Fujoshi, the author argues that the role Japaneseness plays in Taiwanese Fujoshi’s BL fantasies, which facilitates their desire for confluent intimacy, is heavily related to the historical, political, and social context in which both the familiarity and foreignness of Japaneseness have been gradually shaped. It shows how gender, sexuality, and national and cultural practices intersect with each other, resulting in the creation of fantasies and pleasures, in the sense that the construction of Taiwanese Fujoshi BL fantasies contains a range of women’s attitudes toward male homoerotism and their desire for Japaneseness. It not only explores how Fujoshi cultures are practiced and localized under different social contexts, but also suggests a situating of Taiwan as an exemplary mediator within the East Asian cultural sphere by indicating how the complicated historical, political, and cultural relation with Japan has contributed to shape a kind of hybrid cultural practice.

Abstract (sommario):
Albeit some exceptions, athletes, practitioners, decision and policymakers, and sports spectators are predominantly men. In this sense, gender segregation and discrimination are present in multiple aspects of sports, and are socially normalised and accepted through a discourse that essentialises the embodied sexual differences between genders. This gender discourse legitimises the exclusion of women in some sports modalities considered masculine and traped them to those considered as predominantly feminine and feminized It traps female bodies in socio-cultural constructions as less able to exercise and engage in sport or as the second and weaker version of the ideal masculine body. Sports and its management continue to be a field where men and masculinity strongly prevail. The International Congress on Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Equality and Diversity in Sport (ICMPEDS) aimed to investigate the complexities of the following questions: What does gender openness mean in the context of sport in the 21st century? What persists as gender closure in the same context? What are the gender cultures that signify sport continuing to be defined by regimes that resort to dominant masculinity embodied in a strong and male athletic body? Which factors are assessed as the driving forces of these gender cultures that reveal male dominance in the sports field? However, there are significant signs that the context of sport may be changing. The European Union and some national governments have efforted to promote gender equality and diversity by fostering the adoption of gender equality codes/policies in various modalities, and international and local sports organizations. These new policies aim to increase female participation and recognition in sports, their access to leadership positions and involvement in the decision-making in sport structures. Additionally, the number of women practising non-competitive sports and as sports spectators have started growing. This improvement leads to new representations of sports and challenges the roles of women in such a context. Different body constructions and the emergence of alternative embodied femininities and masculinities are also challenging how athletes of both genders experience their bodies and sports practice. Nevertheless, the research on the impacts of these changes/challenges in sports is scarce. This book focuses on mapping gender relations in sports and its management by considering the different modalities, contexts, institutional policies, organizational structures and actors. It treats sports and its management as one avenue where gender segregation and inequality occur, but it also adopts such a space that presents an opportunity for change and a widely applicable topic whose traits and culture are reflected in organizations and work more broadly.

Abstract (sommario):
The International Conference on Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Equality and Diversity in Sports (ICMPEDS) is organized by GESPORT with the support of the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union from the 14th to the 16th of July 2021. The conference is an excellent forum for academics, researchers, practitioners, athletes, man- agers and professionals of federations, associations and sport organizations, and those other- wise involved in sport to share and exchange ideas in different areas of sport related equality worldwide. We will keep you informed by email and post the latest information on this matter on the GESPORT website and social media. Sport and its management continues to be a field where men and masculinity strongly prevail. This conference aims to investigate the complexities attached to the following questions: What does gender openness mean in the context of sport in the 21st century? What persists as gen- der closure in the same context? What are the gender cultures that signify sport continuing to be defined by regimes that resort to a dominant masculinity embodied in a strong and athletic male body? Some illustrations include: a) male athletes have high salaries, more career opportunities, and get more recognition by society than female athletes; b) management and leadership positions in sports organizations are mainly occupied by men, including in sports traditionally considered as feminine and which have become feminised (e.g. gymnastics and dance); c) masculinised sports and its male athletes have much more attention and recognition from the media than female athletes; d) sports journalism continues to be predominantly produced and managed by men; e) some sports spectatorships cultures are marked by rituals and interactions that resort to masculine tribalism, often leading to aggressive and violent behaviours. Gender discrimination in sport is somehow socially normalised and accepted through a dis- course that essentialises the embodied sexual differences between genders. This gender dis- course legitimises the exclusion of women in some sports modalities and traps female bodies in sociocultural constructions as less able to exercise and engage in sport, or as the second and weaker version of the ideal masculine body. However, there are signs that the context of sport may be changing. The European Union and some national governments have made an effort to promote gender equality and diversity by fostering the adoption of gender equality codes/policies in different modalities and in in- ternational and local sports organizations. These new policies aim to increase female partic- ipation and recognition in sport, their access to leadership positions and involvement in the decision-making in sport structures. Additionally, the number of women practising non-com- petitive sport and as sports spectators have started growing, leading to new representations of sport and challenging the role of women in such a context. Finally, different body constructions and the emergence of alternative embodied femininities and masculinities are also challeng- ing how athletes of both genders experience their bodies and sports practice. Yet, research is scarce about the impact of these changes/challenges in the sports context. This conference will focus on mapping gender relations in sport and its management by taking into account the different modalities, contexts, institutional policies, organizational structures and actors (e.g. athletes, spectators, media professionals, sport decision makers and man- agers). It will treat sport and its management as one avenue where gender segregation and inequality occurs, but also adopt such as a space that presents an opportunity for change and does so as a widely applicable topic whose traits and culture are reflected in organizations and work more broadly. In this sense, the conference is interested in theoretical and empirical research work that may explore, but are not limited to the following issues: • Women representativeness in sports modalities and in sport organizational structures in different countries; • Women and management accounting in sport organizations; • The gender regimes that (re)produce different sports policies, modalities, and institu- tions in sport; • The stories of resistance/conformity of women that already occupy different roles in sport contexts; • The challenges and impact of conventional and new body representations in sports institutions and including athletes of both genders; • The discourses of masculinities in sport and its effect on women and men athletes; • The emergence of nationalism and populist discourses in political and governments states and their impact on the (re)shaping of masculinity and femininity constructions in sport; • The gendered transformations of the spectators’ gaze in what concerns different sports modalities; • The effects of new groups of sports spectators on gender relations in sport; • The discourses in media and its participation in the sports gender (in)equality; • The impact of new technologies, and new practices of training/coaching in the body- work and identities of athletes of both genders.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe chapter shows the interconnectedness of nationalism with the construction of the self and close relationships by studying the romantic correspondence of a Finnish nationalist couple in the mid-nineteenth century. Eiranen analyzes personal nationalism by looking at how nationalism was incorporated in the self-narrations of the letters and identifies emotions and gender as central elements in the construction of the national experience. The nationally interpreted male and female ideals formed the basis for the emotional relationship. The cause required gendered sacrifices, partly contradictory to the stereotypes: the man cast himself as an emotional national hero, the woman had to exercise stronger emotional control for his benefit. The chapter argues that the power of nationalism lay in its tight connection to profound, personally experienced meanings and motivations.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractHow women tried to secure a place in the early modern male-dominated intellectual field has been the subject of numerous studies over the last decade. The most visible sign of their growing presence in the intellectual field—their printed portraits—has, however, received surprisingly little critical attention. This chapter discusses printed portraits of learned women as vehicles of public image in the male-dominated Republic of Letters. It unravels how the inclusion of the likenesses of four prominent contemporary learned women—Luise Gottsched, Emilie Du Châtelet, Laura Bassi and Magdalena Sibylla Rieger—in one of the most ambitious printed portrait galleries of the eighteenth century, the Bilder-Sal, contributed to their representation as intellectual authority in the Republic of Letters. Especially due to their visual nature their portraits proved ideal vehicles to readily disseminated representations of female intellectual authority across regional, national and linguistic borders, finding their ways to the study rooms of prominent scholars. As such, they contributed to a more inclusive image of the intellectual across Europe. It remained, however, a fine line between embodying intellectual authority and maintaining female modesty. Besides reflections on their intellectual capacities, these women’s portraits continued to spark discussions on their physical—and evidently female—appearances.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This chapter analyses some of the conceptual questions relating both to gender and occupational feminization. It demonstrates how different conceptions of ’gender’ can be related to different predictions as to the likely outcomes of occupational feminization. A socialconstructivist perspective on gender is adopted. By stressing the processes of gender differentiation rather than difference, it will be argued that one important outcome of the social construction of gender associated with the male-breadwinner model has been the denial of autonomy to women and the association of dependency with femininity.

Abstract (sommario):
The discourse of the Filipina trafficked woman collapses together women who perform multiple kinds of commodified sexual and domestic labor within a global capitalist economy, from Filipina mail-order brides to migrant sex workers. This chapter focuses on the diasporic circulation of the figure of the Filipina trafficked woman / sex worker within three sites of Filipina/o American cultural production: the web site for Gabriela Network’s Purple Rose Campaign, the Filipina American documentary film Sin City Diary, and the Pilipino Cultural Night vignette National Heroes. These sites reveal the tension in representing the Filipina trafficked woman / sex worker, from her portrayal as a victim to be saved by her Filipina American sisters, to her discursive construction by the Philippine state as a “national hero.”

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In the history of representations of Spanish national and ethnic identities, there is a text that, in its manifold transformations, has defined the relationship between Spanish identities and the violence that has characterized their history: Prosper Mérimée’s Carmen (1845). What originally was conceived as a French Romantic travel narrative that violently reduced post Napoleonic, post Carlist Spain to a land of new, romantic exoticism for the contemplation of the (capitalist, male) European gaze, eventually turned into an opera (Bizet, 1875) and developed a life of its own in the twentieth century with works as different as Otto Preminger’s Carmen Jones (1954) or Laurie Anderson’s ‘Carmen’ (1994). In Spain, Carmen laid the ground for the cinematic tradition known as the españolada which, after the Franco dictatorship, was revived with a film that became one of the biggest international box office hits in Spanish film history: Carlos Saura’s Carmen (1983). In Evlyn Gould’s words, the success of Saura’s Carmen made it ‘a paradigm for modern European cultural identity’ (1996: 9), thus coming full circle in the articulation of Spanish identities.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter argues that Italian migrants in Argentina employed Italian-language newspapers to construct gendered and racialized constructions of familial love between Italians and Argentines as “brotherly people” during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These everyday articulations of emotions and love in the ethnic press, the chapter contends, were just as important to the creation of international allegiances and national identities as were the more formal decisions made by diplomats and statesmen. Newspapers like La Patria degli Italiani depicted foreign relations between Italy and Argentina as family relations—as relations between racially similar “Latin brothers”—to justify male-predominate migration, to promote favorable attitudes toward Italy and its migrants, and to rebuke unbrotherly destinations like the United States.

Abstract (sommario):
Fractions are among some concepts in mathematics that pupils in Nigeria primary find difficult to learn, and teachers find difficult to teach. These problems require solutions because mathematics knowledge is germane for technological advancement and national development. Pupils need to be actively involved in constructing their knowledge and digital mathematics learning games could be helpful. Thus, this study investigated the effects of digital mathematics games on primary pupils' achievement in fractions concepts. An appropriately validated pupil fractions achievement test (PFAT) was used to collect data for the study. Data collected were analyzed using t-test. It was revealed that pupils exposed to digital mathematics games performed significantly better than those exposed to conventional method. There is significant difference between achievements of male and female pupils exposed to game-based strategy.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter looks at the work the ABMC has been doing since World War II ended. The chairmanships of Generals Jacob Devers and Mark Clark are explored in some detail. Maintenance of the memorials is a mission of remembrance that the ABMC is strongly upholding. Some additional sites have been created since 1960, and “interpretive centers” continue to be added to the World War I and II memorials. Presidential visits to some of the cemeteries since the Carter years have expanded public awareness of these places of memory. The commission directed the construction of the WWII Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., that was dedicated in 2004. This chapter concludes with an assessment of the enduring importance of the work of the ABMC. The WWI veterans have all passed away, and WWII veterans are becoming fewer. The ABMC’s efforts to maintain the beautiful memorials, monuments, and cemeteries keep the many stories, examples learned, and sacrifices continually fresh in the public mind.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter examines the construction of imagined homelands in a post-national world with a particular focus on the transnational, South Asian, brown women who are expected to display their dis/interested love and sacrifice. Drawing upon Gloria Anzaldúa's theory of Nueva Conciencia Mestiza and the notion of borderland, this chapter studies Taslima Nasreen's French Lover (2002) and Monica Ali's Brick Lane (2004) to address the following questions: How do the female protagonists of the novels—that is, Nilanjana and Nazneen, respectively—succeed to negotiate their position as in-betweeners between imagined homelands? How different are the male and the female characters' perceptions of their home/land? How do the women imagine their homeland when they are asked whether they want to go back or what is their homeland like? Both novels propose a new discourse of home/land in response to such (rhetorical) inquiries. It is argued that the two case studies demarcate the idea of border(home)land as a notion that is neither geographically nor imaginarily fixed.

Abstract (sommario):
Brazil has the third-largest prison population globally, and it has been growing steadily for more than two decades. Constant growth and low jail investment generated significant problems, such as overcrowding and widespread diseases. This study proposes the construction of a Random Forest classifier to predict the occurrence of deaths in prisons. We extracted data from the National Survey of Penitentiary Information for the years 2015 to 2016. The best-fitted classifier achieved accuracy equals 87% being able to identify correctly up to 84% of deaths occurrences. In the present work, it was possible to establish a relationship between prisons' reality and the data mined, determining areas in need of investment in the penitentiary system.

Circular 1 N°70-01 Medellin, Colombia. E-mail: catalina.montoyaarenas@upb.edu.co, lina.escobar@upb.edu.co, claudia.ve7@gmail.com Keywords (3-5): Cultural landscape, social management, heritage, spacial transformations, tourism Conference topics and scale: Stages in territorial configuration The historic center of Marinilla, National Monument since 1959, is located sixty minutes from Medellin at San Nicolas Valley. It has exceptional landscape conditions, highly productive lands, and a large percentage of the water reserve that supplies the region and the country, giving the territory an economic center character since the colony. These physical values make part of collective imagination as a recreation area and an opportunity for development in the 1960s, according to the construction of large national infrastructure works. At the same time, it was object of armed conflict in the 1980s and 1990s, and more recently, directly related to the spatial dynamics of the region: unplanned urban expansion, changes in land use and vegetation cover, with effects on the cultural landscape. In a post-conflict situation, the economic strategies of different actors trust on tourism as a social-spatial management strategy to improve the territory. However, the identity of rurality shows spatial imbalances without recognizing elements of historical construction whose legacies must be revealed to ensure equitable development. To do this, we propose an approach from the cultural landscape in a revision of the historical, symbolic and relational transformation through five systems (anthropic, productive, political, symbolic and spatial), analyzing competitiveness, tourism, landscape and social management, in different scales and during three historical moments. Abstract (sommario):
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are widely recognised as paving the way towards national sustainable development and innovative socioeconomic transformation. However, some students consider STEM as a difficult field to study. Consequently, teachers need to shift from traditional teaching approaches towards participatory and interactive methods to promote the development of students’ higher-order thinking, critical reasoning, and problem-solving skills. This study is an attempt to investigate how computer simulations can contribute to engaging students’ active participation in new knowledge creation in chemical bonding problem solving with computer simulations. Empirical data were collected through interviews, a survey and a test on secondary school student performance in Rwanda. The findings reveal four main forms of participating in knowledge construction with computer simulations: self-reliance, peer collaboration-reliance, teacher-guided-reliance and strategic variation-reliance. The study found no statistically difference between male and female students’ preferences to engage in these forms and in their performance in terms of higher-order thinking skills in chemical bonding problem solving with computer simulations. Moreover, the findings demonstrate that computer simulations can help students to create multisensory connections with the object of learning enabling them to become actively engaged in chemistry learning through various settings. Consequently, the lines between abstract concepts and related chemical reactions and processes become closely related in a virtual reality. Finally, this study suggests five actions that teachers can undertake to support student active engagement in chemistry learning with computer simulations.

Abstract (sommario):
The working conditions of blacksmiths working in the production of titanium alloys are characterized by a high risk of developing an occupationally conditioned pathology of the musculoskeletal system (MSS). The identification of factors that increase and modify the prevalence of chronic pathology, as well as the estimate of their contribution to the prevalence, are relevant and socially significant. The purpose of the study was to assess the contribution of risk factors for the development of chronic pathology of MSS in workers in the production of titanium alloys using the Classification Tree method (CT). Objects and Methods. We used retrospective data from 330 male titanium workers who underwent a routine medical examination in 2020. Data were collected on age, length of service, BMI, and behavioral and occupational hazards (OH). Occupational risk factors at workplaces were: titanium aerosol in the air of the working area, heating microclimate, general and local vibration and the severity of the labor process. The CT method was used to assess the contribution of behavioral and HMF to the development of chronic CMS pathology in blacksmiths. Results. In the structure of chronic pathology among blacksmiths of the studied enterprise, MMS diseases occupied the second place (31,2%). As the experience of blacksmiths increased by 10 years, the number of patients with MSS increased by 8,3% — 18,3%. When the concentration of titanium in the air of the working area is above the MPC (10 mg/m3), a statistically significantly higher prevalence of chronic pathology of the MSS was established in comparison with the group of workers in acceptable working conditions. For workers with overweight and obesity (further — overweight), a tendency to an increase in the prevalence of chronic MSS pathology was found under the influence of general vibration, the severity of the labor process, and smoking. Examples of constructing visual, intuitive decision rules when using CT in a multivariate analysis of the formation of chronic pathology are demonstrated. Conclusions. Significant risk factors for the development of MSS pathology for blacksmiths working in the production of titanium alloys were: experience of more than 11 years, the presence of professional contact with titanium, exposure to general vibration, heavy physical load, overweight, smoking (RR=3,02; 95% CI=2,15‑4,24).
