Abstract (sommario):
The connection of the sermon and the word of God has been a topic of much debate. This paper explores the significance and problematic aspects of the understanding of the sermon as a word of God. The Barthian notion that we have to speak God’ s word yet are unable to do so offers a dialectic interpretation that leaves the preacher and the congregation vulnerable. The problem lies, according to this paper, not so much in connecting the sermon and the word of God, but in the fact that this connection is sought in the act op speaking. The act of hearing the sermon might be a much more suitable category of understanding the connection.

The main idea of the research is to limit most of the connections that were linked to the Kaaba, the circumambulation connection or more severe, connections that were required by doctrine, and documented by traditional and rational inferences. The importance of the research lies in trying to cover most of the connections that were connected to the Kaaba, and to find out the nature and types of these connections, the bulk of their dimensions, and the strength of their cohesion. The problem of the research is represented by In the impact of these connections on the Muslim belief, the research aims to clarify these connections and arrange them in the appropriate model order, and provide fertile scientific material that deepens faith, refutes speculation, enriches objective knowledge, and creates a fertile background that gives the Muslim confidence when discussing with others about the Kaaba in particular, and thought. Islam in general, and the nature of the research required that I follow the descriptive, analytical, and deductive method, considering it to be the best method for the nature of the research. One of the most prominent findings reached by the researcher is that the connections associated with the Kaaba are diverse and can be limited to three main connections: divine connections, devotional connections, and security connections. And the connection of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, to the House is greater than that of Abraham, peace be upon him, because he, may God bless him and grant him peace, participated in building the House voluntarily and honorably - by the grace of God Almighty before the mission - and he re-placed the Black Stone. In its place, he decisively purified the house. On the day of the conquest, he purified it of idols, and purified it of the impurity of the polytheists in the Farewell Pilgrimage 10 AH, and he modified the circumambulation into an Irma and Sa’i. The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, is the model to be followed in the rituals. Indeed, there is Amendments that Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, wanted to make at home. Therefore, the researcher believes that looking at the connections associated with the Kaaba increases the believer’s strength and certainty, and that the connections may sometimes overlap, and that what the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, did towards the House, exceeds what Abraham, peace be upon him, did.

Sufism is often associated with Islamic mysticism and spirituality that focuses only on the purification of the soul and personal connection to God. Sufi leaders seem to no longer play an essential social role in the modern context. Islamic teachings essentially explain maintaining a balance between personal connection to God and social connection between Muslims and human beings. This study explores how personal and social connections institutionalize the Idrisiyya Sufi order. Regarding social connection, the Sufi order community has a great interest in the values of nationalism and implements it in society. This study was carried out in the community of Idrisiyya Sufi order in Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia. This study shows that Sufi leaders recognize the critical aspects of nationalism values from theological and sociological perspectives. This community also implements nationalism in educational, economic, social, and political aspects. This shows that Sufism still plays a substantial role in society in the modern context.

<p>The will of the first Mover, who is none other than God, is inextricably linked to the existence of people and everything else in the cosmos. God is the reason why everything has a purpose, including humans. Aristotle, a philosopher, held this philosophical idea to be true. The Javanese, on the other hand, have their own ideas on how to worship God as the architect of the universe. This approach, known as <em>satataning panembah</em>, includes <em>sembah catur </em>or four different forms of worship. <em>Serat Wedhatama</em> by KGPAA Mangkunegara IV contains <em>sembah catur</em>. The goal of qualitative descriptive research is to identify the connections between the two, notably Aristotle's conception of God and the idea of <em>satataning panembah</em>, through gathering evidence through literary study. The study's findings indicate a connection between God and the four forms of worship practiced by the Javanese people it s <em>sembah raga, sembah cipta, sembah jiwa, </em>and <em>sembah rasa</em> according to Aristotle. The connection is that there is a means to reach human unity with God, which is the height of human perfection.</p>

Abstract Christianity proposes that God can be accessed both in the subjectivity of the human self and in the World. This admittedly strange idea can be understood by drawing certain insights from Michel Henry and Dumitru Stăniloae. For Henry, the connection between God and the human self in subjectivity is understood as the generation of the human as a living self in the absolute Life which is God. For Stăniloae, the connection between God and the World is understood through the interpretation of the cosmos as an intelligible medium by which the dialog between God and the human being takes place. These two thinkers have certain lacunae, but their proposals can be fruitfully combined through the supposition that the World is the “body” of God, i.e. His inner life as seen from the outside.

Apropos Kant’s discussion of scientific practice in the section of the first Critique entitled “Appendix to the Transcendental Dialectic,” there has long been a tendency in Anglophone Kant scholarship to downplay the role of God or quickly brush aside the centrality of the idea in the Kantian system. As a way of setting the stage for evaluating the place of God in Kant’s philosophy, this paper, in a concise and straightforward manner, attempts to make the connection between science and the idea of God as it appears in the first Critique explicit and explain why Kant is driven to make that connection. In the first half of the paper, I summarize Kant’s discussion of scientific practice as presented in the first part of the Appendix, followed by a brief discussion of a problem his account raises. In the second half of the paper, I elaborate the connection between science and God as a response to that problem.

The objective of this review was to assess the body of research in spiritually-based studies to demonstrate that connections between cancer patients and themselves, other people, and God lead to greater cancer recovery or survival rates. This review specifically looked at the prevalence and methods used to evaluate the significance of these relationships for cancer patients in enhancing their spiritual well-being. Eleven studies were ultimately included in this analysis after a thorough search of available English language literature. Findings showed that patients' ability to learn to live with cancer is significantly impacted by the common spiritual focus on connection with oneself, others, and God. Additionally, the benefits that cancer patients experienced were highlighted by the studies. The results also highlighted the benefits attained by cancer patients as a result of the actions taken in each type of connection for improved disease-coping skills.

The Middle Platonic concept of ‘participation’ in the Forms is important for understanding the connection that Athanasius finds between Christians and Christ. Yet, Athanasius adapts this concept to his Johannine view of the Word of God incarnate in Christ. He turns to the language of bodily creation and kinship rather than contemplation to express the relationship between Christ and Christians. For Athanasius, evil makes it impossible for humans to contemplate the divine Word by which they were created. Therefore, the Word embodied a new humanity in Christ. The Holy Spirit enables Christians to participate in Christ, becoming thereby part of a new humanity and children of God.

Min was one of the earliest known Egyptian deities and his origins remain obscure but, because of his association with fertility and the kingship, he retained his importance from the Predynastic Period into the Roman era. Although his depiction as an ithyphallic, mummified male with a flail balanced above his raised right arm remained unaltered throughout, the overall iconography of Min did exhibit changes, notably with the introduction in the Sixth Dynasty of what is accepted as a lettuce plant resembling the modern Cos or Romaine cultivar of Lactuca sativa L. It is the association of Min with the lettuce plant that is the subject of this thesis. It is the received opinion in the literature that the plant was offered to Min, a fertility god, as an aphrodisiac. Apart from two seminal works that are over fifty years old, little research has been conducted into the association of Min with the lettuce. Much early research is in need of re-examination because of changes in social attitudes and research techniques and this the thesis seeks to redress. The aims of the research are to review the evidence for the lettuce plant in ancient Egypt and to re-examine the previously noted association of the god Min with a plant identified as lettuce. The study is primarily library and museum based and examines the history and nature of lettuce in ancient Egypt. The nature of 'aphrodisiac' is examined and the use of such substances in ancient Egypt is compared with modern usage. Min as a god of fertility is re-analysed and, finally, texts and Ptolemaic temple inscriptions are examined for evidence as to why and by whom lettuce was offered. The research results are applied to a study of Min as a god of fertility. The evidence indicates that lettuce was offered by the king to Min to ensure the fertility and regeneration of agriculture and of the king which would secure the continuation of his line and humanity. There is no evidence to suggest lettuce was offered as an aphrodisiac to increase the sexual desire of the god.

La présente thèse se propose d’aborder l’intelligence singulière de Marguerite Duras et pour ce faire, elle retient l’ensemble des écrits : romans, textes de théâtre, écrits journalistiques, scénarios, textes divers. Elle prend en compte le difficile héritage de la Shoah et du stalinisme, et à partir de l'extrême déshumanisation qui a marqué le XXe siècle, elle s’interroge sur le nihilisme propre à la modernité, plus particulièrement sur la manière dont le nihilisme est susceptible de gagner la littérature puisqu’il appert qu’il entre fortement en résonance avec l’univers durassien. La réflexion ne saurait s’en tenir à la sphère historique et elle investit nécessairement le champ philosophique. Le plus important néanmoins n’est peut-être pas tant de révéler le phénomène que de chercher à saisir comment l’œuvre se débat face au néant qui la guette et par conséquent résiste. Dès lors se fait jour un anti-nihilisme au sein de la littérature et la notion de sensible devient par là-même centrale. C’est en effet à une déperdition du sensible que l’on assiste quand le nihilisme se manifeste ; mais le sensible ne se borne pas à jouer le rôle d’un indicateur ; il est bien plus le principe permettant de combattre le néant. The present thesis aims to examine the unique intelligence emerging in Marguerite Duras's works, and to showcase this, it encompasses a range of her writings including novels, plays, newspaper articles, scenarios and other essays. It takes into account the difficult heritage of the Shoah and Stalinism, and from the extreme dehumanisation that marked the 20th century, it questions itself on nihilism in relation to modernity, specifically the manner in which nihilism is likely to influence literature as it would appear that it is very much present in the Duras universe. The reflection doesn't just cover the historical aspect, it expands fundamentally into a philosophical dimension. The most important thing, however, is probably not so much to reveal the phenomenon but to try and understand how the works struggle to face the coming emptiness and therefore resists. From then on, anti-nihilism rises within literature and as a result, sensitivity becomes central. Indeed, a loss of sensitivity is observed when nihilism manifests itself, however, sensitivity is not just an indicator; it is rather the enabling principle to combat emptiness. With it, the cogito disappears suddenly and the encroachment, thought borrowed from Merleau-Ponty, appears. With it, intelligence shies away from the intelligible, admits contradiction and takes off. With it, desire, the expression of something beyond our control, establishes itself as the foundation of the human being, guaranteeing his humanity. With it finally, transcendence returns to immanence so that it becomes possible to consider metaphysics from the flesh

The context for this qualitative case study evaluation was a 400 member United Methodist Church in southwest Michigan. Incongruence existed between the congregants' claimed spiritual development and minimal supernatural manifestations. Significant instruction has not resulted in change. The purpose of this project was to develop, implement, and evaluate a leadership training. The hypothesis was that peer coaching is an effective method to accelerate spiritual intimacy as measured by hearing God. Data analysis revealed three themes related to hearing God: hindrances, helps, and hearing. Hindrances must be addressed through helps in order to hear.

Les molécules de diaryléthène utilisées comme interrupteurs moléculaires sont envisagées comme composants de dispositifs électroniques moléculaires. Ces molécules photochromiques présentent une stabilité thermique, une résistance à la fatigue et une efficacité de commutation élevées. Néanmoins, la commutation de la plupart des diaryléthènes (DAEs) est asymétrique : leur réaction de photocycloréversion possède un rendement quantique bien inférieur à celui de leur réaction de photocyclisation. Une stratégie pour résoudre ce problème de commutation asymétrique a été testée, elle consistait à connecter les molécules de diaryléthène à des nanoparticules d'or (AuNPs). En effet, les nanoparticules d'or présentent à la fois une résonance plasmonique de surface localisée (LSPR), très utile pour le suivi de l'adsorption des DAEs à la surface des AuNPs, et un effet de nanoantenne plasmonique. Cet effet de nanoantenne, générant une importante amplification du champ électromagnétique au voisinage immédiat de la nanoparticule, devait augmenter l'efficacité de la réaction de photocycloréversion (son rendement quantique), conduisant à une commutation plus symétrique. La commutation des molécules de dithiényléthène (DTE) a d'abord été caractérisée pour les molécules seules en solution. Ensuite, la fonctionnalisation de nanoparticules d'or de 28 nm déposées sur ITO par les molécules de DTE a été suivie in situ par spectroscopie UV-visible. Les mesures de commutation sur les échantillons ITO/AuNPs/DTE ont été réalisées par spectroscopie UV-visible combinée à un dispositif d'irradiation. Il en est résulté que pour les molécules de diaryléthène choisies pour cette étude connectées à des AuNPs de 28 nm, bien que la capacité de commutation ait été préservée lors du greffage sur les AuNPs, le piégeage (« quenching ») était largement dominant. Par conséquent, un ralentissement des réactions photo-induites a été provoqué et non une accélération. Les nanoparticules d'or ont également été étudiées à l'échelle de la nanoparticule unique par AFM et hypermicroscopie (microscopie en champ sombre couplée à la spectroscopie UV-visible). D'une part, la fonctionnalisation de nanoparticules d'or individuelles de 51 nm a été suivie par hypermicroscopie. Des mesures de commutation ont ensuite été effectuées sur les molécules de diaryléthènes portées par les AuNPs uniques, révélant que cette commutation était comparable à celle précédemment mesurée à une échelle plus globale. Diarylethene molecules used as molecular switches are envisioned as components of molecular electronic devices. These photochromic molecules exhibit high thermal stability, resistance to fatigue, and switching efficiency. Nevertheless, the switching of most diarylethenes (DAEs) is asymmetric: their photocycloreversion reaction possessing a much lower quantum yield than that of their photocyclization reaction. A strategy to solve that asymmetric switching issue was tested, it consisted in connecting the diarylethene molecules to gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Indeed, gold nanoparticles exhibit both a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), very useful for the monitoring of the adsorption of the DAEs at the surface of the AuNPs, and a plasmonic nanoantenna effect. This nanoantenna effect, generating a large enhancement of the electromagnetic field in the close vicinity of the nanoparticle, was expected to increase the efficiency of the photocycloreversion reaction (its quantum yield), leading to a more symmetric switching. The switching of the dithienylethene (DTE) molecules was first characterized for the molecules alone in solution. Then, the functionalization of 28 nm gold nanoparticles deposited on ITO by the DTE molecules was monitored in situ by UV-visible spectroscopy. Switching measurement on the samples ITO/AuNPs/DTE were performed by UV-visible spectroscopy combined with an irradiation set-up. It resulted that for the diarylethene molecules chosen for this study connected to 28 nm AuNPs, although the switching capacity was preserved upon grafting on the AuNPs, the quenching was largely dominant. As a consequence, a slowing of the photo-induced reactions was caused and not an acceleration. Gold nanoparticles were also studied at the unique nanoparticle scale by AFM and hypermicroscopy (dark field microscopy coupled to UV-visible spectroscopy). On the one hand, the functionalization of individual 51 nm gold nanoparticles was monitored by hypermicroscopy. Switching measurements were then conducted on the diarylethenes molecules beard by single AuNPs, revealing that this switching was comparable to the one previously measured on a more global scale. On the other hand, asymmetric plasmonic dimers made of a 51 nm AuNP and a 28 nm AuNP were prepared and characterized

Chapter One asks whether Christianity and religion have been re-defined in the Jamaican context. The definitions of spirituality and mysticism, particularly as defined by Lartey are given and reasons for using these definitions. Chapter Two examines history and the Caribbean religious experience. It analyses theory and reflects on the Caribbean difference. The role that literary forefathers and foremothers have played in defining the writers about whom my research is concerned is examined in Chapter Three, as are some of their selected works. Chapter Four reflects on the work of Lorna Goodison, asks how she has defined God whether within a Christian or African framework. In contrast Olive Senior appears to view Christianity as oppressive and this is examined in Chapter Five. Chapter Six looks at the ways in which Erna Brodber re-connects the spirit. Chapter Seven regards the spiritually joyful God of Jean 'Binta' Breeze. Conclusions are then drawn as to whether writers have adapted a God to the Jamaican context, whether they have re-connected to the spirit and if it is true that Jamaica is a spiritual nation.

1. The hyphae of three basidiomycetes, Coprinus cinereus, Coriolus versicolor and Gloeophyllum trabeum, were stained with DAPI to ascertain their karyotic state. The process of clamp formation was observed in these fungi. 2. Hyphae and clamp connections were treated with CFW to show areas of chitin synthesis. Clamp connections show the same general pattern of chitin deposition as hyphae. Individual hyphae and clamps were treated with nikkomycin, a drug which inhibits chitin synthesis. Again, clamps behaved in a manner similar to hyphae. 3. Genomic DNA was isolated from C. cinereus and used in polymerase chain reactions to try to identify chitin synthase genes. A product was identified, but it is unclear as to whether this is a true chitin synthase gene. 4. Fungi were treated with the chitinase inhibiting drug, allosamidin. The position of branches and clamps relative to the hyphal apex was altered by this antibiotic indicating apical extension was disrupted. Allosamidin did not affect the specific growth rate of fungi in submerged liquid culture. 5. Fungi were grown under conditions of restricted calcium ion supply. With reduced calcium concentration hyphal branch frequency increased as did clamp frequency. Although the pattern of growth was affected, specific growth rate remained constant in cultures grown in submerged liquid culture. 6. The galvanotropic response of fungi was investigated. The magnitude of the response of hyphae to an electric field was dependent upon field strength, length of exposure to the field, pH and calcium ion concentration.

How do we establish objectivity when each person’s perspective is uniquely subjective? Borges’s “The Writing of the God” shows how an epistemically isolated subject is incapable of ever arriving at a robust sense of objectivity without reference to an Other. Donald Davidson’s theory of interpretive triangulation posits that the Other’s external perspective establishes objectivity by making the subject aware of the limits of his or her perception. Emmanuel Levinas suggests that the face of the Other establishes ethics as first philosophy through a primordial, affective discourse. The ethical relation is what undergirds the questions of epistemology which Davidson addresses.

Abstract This paper argues that (1) epistemic self-trust is more basic than what we take to be reasons for belief, and (2) consistent self-trust commits us to trust in others. Epistemic self-trust is inescapable, given that the search for reasons leads to epistemic circularity, and given the more basic fact that we have no way to tell that there is any connection at all between reasons and truth without trust in ourselves when we are epistemically conscientious. It then argues that when we are conscientious we will inevitably come to believe that other persons have the same quality of conscientiousness in virtue of which we trust ourselves, and so we owe them epistemic trust in advance of reasons for thinking that they are reliable. The fact that someone else has a belief gives each of us a prima facie reason to believe it, and the reason is stronger when large numbers of people share the belief. The conclusion is that consistent epistemic self-trust supports common agreement arguments, in particular, a new form of the consensus gentium argument for theism, based on self-trust.

<p>In order to control the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic across the country, China has used all available resources to build infectious disease hospitals in various ways. These hospitals include three modes and adapt to different disease levels: temporary emergency hospitals; makeshift hospitals by transforming public buildings; and existing general wards transformed into infectious wards. Through the practice of several projects, on the basis of the original standard system, China urgently issued a series of relevant standards and guidelines to guide the construction of temporary hospitals. As one of the earliest cases of temporary emergency infectious disease hospital, the Thunder God Mountain Hospital adopted a prefabricated modular design concept in plan design, plane design and component design, and also combined the application of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technology. Based on industrialized module processing and manufacturing, combined with an efficient on-site construction management system, the problem was solved of completing the construction in a very short time, which played a key role in controlling the epidemic situation.</p>

The paper explores two phenomena powerful in life and interpretive terms: the heart and deification. One is understood as deeply human, the other as metaphysically appealing. It is a connection present in the history of Christian thinking for a long time, since the heart is perceived as an inner space where God meets man, in the most intimate form, which can only acquire the character of unification. Deification, as the experience of Christian mystics and mystics shows, basically means the deepest unification with God and activation of the change in God’s love. The issue examined in the paper is presented in the form of a brief guide to the theological concept of deification, and also the convergence of the historical and biblical views of the heart. The core of thinking about the topic is the interpretation of the heart as an inner image the (heart as the center, exchange of hearts) and the interpretation of the phenomenality of deification in the context of written mystical experience.

This paper aims to analyse values of meanings of proper names which have the role to convey the intimate connection between the human soul and the Divinity, as this intimacy is configured in the poetry by Traian Dorz, a less studied contemporary Romanian writer, the author of thousands of lines of mystical poetry and of several volumes of memoires and religious mediations. Thus, in an important number of literary creations inspired by biblical truths and verses, nouns like Mire (‘groom’), Soţ (‘husband’), Frate (‘brother’), Prieten (‘friend’), Dor (‘longing’) etc. are integrated in original lyrical definitions or phrases which substitute the name of God. From the viewpoint of Christianity, these nominal phrases point out the human being’s aspiration towards the ecstatic state, as the human being is described during its mystical ascension, until the true, complete and everlasting unification with its Creator.

The theme of the relationship between one and many, translated into the realm of ecclesiology, encompasses a broad spectrum of ques- tions, including the issue of the catholicity of the Church, the question of church unity, issue of primacy and collegiality, the relationship of one and many Churches, etc. As such, this question not only represents an intra-Orthodox concern but also stands as one of the greatest con- temporary challenges in ecumenical dialogue. In order to grasp the es- sence of this issue, it is useful to get an insight into Metropolitan John Zizioulas’ theological perspectives on the link between one and many. This study initially investigates the philosophical elements of this prob- lem, with further discussion on its theological and ecclesiological con- sequences, in accordance with the Metropolitan method. It is notable that the Metropolitan bases his views on the principle of Trinitarian theology and Christology linked to Pneumatology, a connection fur- ther affirmed by the Eucharistic nature of ecclesiology. Thus, the Eucha- rist becomes the hermeneutical key for comprehending this question. Starting from these foundations, the metropolitan, in understanding the relationship between one and many, comes to talk about the catho- licity of the Church, as well as about the relationship between primacy and collegiality, church unity, etc. Finally, the manifestation of unity in God hic et nunc will be highlighted as the main reason for the Met- ropolitan’s insistence on examining this question through the prism of Eucharistic ecclesiology.

When working with solid wood products, various ways of connecting parts are used, both in length, width and thickness, as well as connections in the structure. One of the most common ways to connect parts is considered to be a spike–groove connection. It is used to fasten the details of window frames, doorways, various furniture elements, and the walls of wooden boxes. The joint on the spikes has good mechanical strength, convenient to use. Spike joints in carpentry and carpentry were invented in order to create a strong bundle of two parts without the use of additional metal fasteners. Since the compound has been used for a long time, it is not surprising that it has been modified and improved. Today, there are several types of such fasteners. In the furniture and carpentry industry, where the reliability of the connection is necessary, it is most popular. But knowing such properties of wood as hygroscopicity, in some cases, during the operation of the product, when the operating conditions change (increasing or decreasing the temperature and humidity of the environment), the wood swells, or shrinks. This leads to the appearance of such defects as cracking, divergence of strips, the appearance of cracks. The method of connecting solid wood bars proposed in the article is relevant.

Abstract Mechanical strength, integrity, and reliability of solder connections used in the microelectronics industry are important factors in overall quality and reliability of the finished product. In most cases tin (Sn) rich solders are attached to a base metal plated with nickel (Ni) and then with gold (Au). Formation of AuSn4 intermetallics in the solder may result in loss of more than 80% of the initial impact toughness, resulting in loss of reliability of the connection. Gold (Au) embrittlement is a major concern in tin/lead (Sn/Pb) soldering or any other joining process with Au and Sn as major constituents. Noncompliance to Au plating-thickness specifications by vendors or insufficient Sn wicking of Au surfaces can result in embrittled joints and unreliable parts.

The sealing performance prediction of bolted pipe flange connections with gaskets is important factor. However, it is known that the sealing performance of the larger nominal diameter connection is worse than that with smaller nominal diameter connection due to the flange rotation. Furthermore, recently PTFE blended gaskets were developed newly and the excellent sealing performance in the bolted pipe flange connection with smaller nominal diameter is found. So, it is necessary to examine the sealing performance and the mechanical characteristics of pipe flange connections with larger nominal diameter under internal pressure. The objectives of present study are to examine the mechanical characteristics of the pipe flange connection with PTFE blended gasket under internal pressure such as the load factor, the contact gasket stress distribution and the sealing performance using FEM and experiments. Using the obtained contact gasket stress distribution and the fundamental leak rate for smaller PTFE gasket, the leak rate of the connection is predicted under internal pressure. In the FEM calculation, the effects of the nominal diameter of pip flange connections on the mechanical characteristics are shown. In the experiments, ASME class 300 24” pipe flange connections is used and the gasket is chosen as No.GF300 in PTFE blended gaskets. The FEM results of the axial bolt forces are in a fairly good agreement with the experimental results. In addition, the leak rate obtained from the FEM calculations are fairly coincided with the measured results. The mechanical characteristics of pipe flange connection with PTFE blended gasket are compared with those with spiral wound gasket.

Bolted pipe flange connections have been widely used in mechanical structures such as oil, chemical plants and so on. Sometimes leakage accidents occur from the connections. In assembling the pipe flange connections, the bolt preloads are scattered and then the connections are subjected to external bending moment due to earthquake as well as internal pressure. In the present paper, the changes in the axial bolt forces are measured in assembling. The bolts are tightened with torque wrench. Using the history of the bolt force changes, the gasket stress distributions on the connection with gaskets are analyzed using FEM. Then the gasket stress distributions on the connections under external bending moment and internal pressure are analyzed. Using the gasket stress distributions, the amount of leakage of the connections is estimated while the basic gasket characteristics have been measured according to JIS B 2251. The amount of leakage of the connection was measured for the various gasket stresses. The estimated results are in a fairly good agreement with the measured results. It is found that the effect of the scatter of bolt preload is substantial on the sealing performance of the connections. Discussion is made on the sealing characteristics of the connections. The change of axial bolt force obtained from experimental result and FEM result are fairly good agreement.

Workplace spirituality has been defined as a framework for organizational values that is part of the culture, connection, and future. AKA is a small woman-owned, spirit-led business. Our mission and vision direct us toward programs, research, evaluation, and communities that match our values, theories, and interests. Because spirituality is essential for wellness, well teams, and well communities, we designed this study to explore AKA team member views about spirituality and how they incorporate spirituality in their work. The following research questions to guide this study: 1) What are some spiritual practices of AKA team members? and 2) How do spiritual practices influence the inner self, outer self, and team/clients? Methods: Data for this study were collected from AKA Associates with Zoom interviews from May 2023 to July 2023. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed using Otter.ai, cleaned, and coded using thematic analysis. Results: The research team contacted twelve AKA associates; nine were eligible to participate. Two were male, and seven were female. The thematic analysis revealed three major workplace spirituality themes: beliefs, practices, and experiences. Spiritual beliefs varied among the team. Many cited a belief in God or a higher power. Others mentioned goodness, altruism, and a Divine connection to the path they are on. Practices have to do with the outer self and what we do, what we see, and what we hear. AKA associates’ practices vary from prayer, journaling, forgiveness, burning sage, being in nature, attending church, having joy, gratitude, and involvement in church/faith communities. AKA associates talked about their varied experiences, including service, generosity, empowerment, grounding, integrity/accountability, advocacy, and authenticity. Discussion: This qualitative study found that beliefs, practices, and experiences create connections and enduring relationships. Within the AKA team, beliefs varied about spirituality. Some believed in a Creator or God; others talked about a higher power, goodness, or nothing. Spirituality in the workplace has the potential to improve the health and well-being of employees and clients served. Spiritual beliefs vary within individuals and organizations; what is most important is the experiences that result from a spiritual orientation. Bridges often serve as key links in local and national transportation networks. Bridge closures can result in severe costs, not only in the form of repair or replacement, but also in the form of economic losses related to medium- and long-term interruption of businesses and disruption to surrounding communities. In addition, continuous functionality of bridges is very important after any seismic event for emergency response and recovery purposes. Considering the importance of these structures, the associated structural design philosophy is shifting from collapse prevention to maintaining functionality in the aftermath of moderate to strong earthquakes, referred to as “resiliency” in earthquake engineering research. Moreover, the associated construction philosophy is being modernized with the utilization of accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques, which strive to reduce the impact of construction on traffic, society, economy and on-site safety. This report presents two bridge systems that target the aforementioned issues. A study that combined numerical and experimental research was undertaken to characterize the seismic performance of these bridge systems. The first part of the study focuses on the structural system-level response of highway bridges that incorporate a class of innovative connecting devices called the “V-connector,”, which can be used to connect two components in a structural system, e.g., the column and the bridge deck, or the column and its foundation. This device, designed by ACII, Inc., results in an isolation surface at the connection plane via a connector rod placed in a V-shaped tube that is embedded into the concrete. Energy dissipation is provided by friction between a special washer located around the V-shaped tube and a top plate. Because of the period elongation due to the isolation layer and the limited amount of force transferred by the relatively flexible connector rod, bridge columns are protected from experiencing damage, thus leading to improved seismic behavior. The V-connector system also facilitates the ABC by allowing on-site assembly of prefabricated structural parts including those of the V-connector. A single-column, two-span highway bridge located in Northern California was used for the proof-of-concept of the proposed V-connector protective system. The V-connector was designed to result in an elastic bridge response based on nonlinear dynamic analyses of the bridge model with the V-connector. Accordingly, a one-third scale V-connector was fabricated based on a set of selected design parameters. A quasi-static cyclic test was first conducted to characterize the force-displacement relationship of the V-connector, followed by a hybrid simulation (HS) test in the longitudinal direction of the bridge to verify the intended linear elastic response of the bridge system. In the HS test, all bridge components were analytically modeled except for the V-connector, which was simulated as the experimental substructure in a specially designed and constructed test setup. Linear elastic bridge response was confirmed according to the HS results. The response of the bridge with the V-connector was compared against that of the as-built bridge without the V-connector, which experienced significant column damage. These results justified the effectiveness of this innovative device. The second part of the study presents the HS test conducted on a one-third scale two-column bridge bent with self-centering columns (broadly defined as “resilient columns” in this study) to reduce (or ultimately eliminate) any residual drifts. The comparison of the HS test with a previously conducted shaking table test on an identical bridge bent is one of the highlights of this study. The concept of resiliency was incorporated in the design of the bridge bent columns characterized by a well-balanced combination of self-centering, rocking, and energy-dissipating mechanisms. This combination is expected to lead to minimum damage and low levels of residual drifts. The ABC is achieved by utilizing precast columns and end members (cap beam and foundation) through an innovative socket connection. In order to conduct the HS test, a new hybrid simulation system (HSS) was developed, utilizing commonly available software and hardware components in most structural laboratories including: a computational platform using Matlab/Simulink [MathWorks 2015], an interface hardware/software platform dSPACE [2017], and MTS controllers and data acquisition (DAQ) system for the utilized actuators and sensors. Proper operation of the HSS was verified using a trial run without the test specimen before the actual HS test. In the conducted HS test, the two-column bridge bent was simulated as the experimental substructure while modeling the horizontal and vertical inertia masses and corresponding mass proportional damping in the computer. The same ground motions from the shaking table test, consisting of one horizontal component and the vertical component, were applied as input excitations to the equations of motion in the HS. Good matching was obtained between the shaking table and the HS test results, demonstrating the appropriateness of the defined governing equations of motion and the employed damping model, in addition to the reliability of the developed HSS with minimum simulation errors. The small residual drifts and the minimum level of structural damage at large peak drift levels demonstrated the superior seismic response of the innovative design of the bridge bent with self-centering columns. The reliability of the developed HS approach motivated performing a follow-up HS study focusing on the transverse direction of the bridge, where the entire two-span bridge deck and its abutments represented the computational substructure, while the two-column bridge bent was the physical substructure. This investigation was effective in shedding light on the system-level performance of the entire bridge system that incorporated innovative bridge bent design beyond what can be achieved via shaking table tests, which are usually limited by large-scale bridge system testing capacities.

In the first two phases of this project, the accuracy and reliability of both conventional and more advanced nondestructive inspection techniques were evaluated by way of a round-robin program of blind inspections The results indicate that there is much variability in the accuracy and reliability of discontinuity detection and sizing depending on details of the NDT procedures adopted, which includes specification of equipment, techniques, calibration methods, and reporting requirements. In Phase III, optimized procedures for sleeve fillet welds and a limited number of branch groove welds were developed in the laboratory using fabricated assemblies containing Intentionally placed discontinuities. In response to a recommendation in Phase Ill, the current phase developed optimized procedures for a wide range of branch groove welds. The results of this phase indicate that the reliability and accuracy of nondestructive inspection techniques is not as high as obtained for sleeve fillet welds in the previous phase of the program In particular, the detection of sub-surface discontinuities by ultrasonic inspection is made more difficult by the added complexity of the branch weld geometries. As with sleeve fillet welds however, the probability of detecting weld toe cracks of a significant size can be quite good.

Social media creates new spaces for connecting people digitally and provides a forum for the exchange of information and discussion. Online spaces such as Facebook groups (FGs) have become part of the fabric of social interaction in many rural areas, with both residents and others living away from the community maintaining a connection in the virtual space. Community FGs are routinely used to share place-based information about resources, events or issues, and to discuss topics of shared interest. In research, these groups allow researchers to connect directly with people who have an interest in what happens within specific communities and offer rich opportunities for participants to likewise engage with research. We can reflect on how FGs in rural communities have the potential to enhance and/or complement existing approaches by making research with dispersed communities more accessible and affordable, while considering challenges around confidentiality and digital inclusion given the characteristics and size of the population. Social media has developed at pace during the last decade, and digital ethics is a shifting methods sub-field that poses challenges to social sciences and humanities researchers. Apart from platforms’ changing terms and conditions, research with and on social media groups has specific ethical challenges (e.g. around anonymity, confidentiality, and data access) that require tailored consideration. In particular, when approaching netnography and similar methods with social media groups, dialogic approaches which aim to engage, respect and protect participants are critical. There is consensus on the need to agree the access conditions with the group administrator as a first step, but there is no guidance on good practice on developing these conditions. To create these guidelines, we have worked collaboratively across disciplines and with administrators of Facebook groups to explore what such process could look like: aspects to address, pros and cons of potential approaches, and potential challenges and solutions.

Over the past several decades, the Inter-American Development Bank (hereafter "the Bank") has gained considerable experience with regard to the promotion of urban development in Brazil through multi-sectoral and global multiple works projects at the municipal level. This has also entailed a valuable learning process with respect to the challenges in environmental and social planning and management associated with urban development in the country. As a result, much of what the Bank is currently doing in connection with its extensive urban development portfolio in Brazil can be characterized as good practice. This is particularly the case in terms of its reliance on strategic planning at the local level and in the ways in which environmental and social considerations and components have been integrated - or "mainstreamed" - into project and design and implementation. Based on a review of pertinent documents, interviews with Bank staff and selected borrowers, and field visits to one completed and two advanced active Procidades projects in the states of Parana and Mato Grosso do Sul in February 2013, the purpose of this paper is to summarize these features of the Bank's approach to urban development in Brazil, to briefly describe how this approach has evolved over time and to identify a few areas where possible improvements might be useful.
