Abstract (sommario):
In the last decade, since the Third Lausanne Congress on World Evangelization (2010) in Cape Town, South Africa, the world has significantly changed. The majority of the world’s Christians are located in the Global South. Globalization, conflict, and migration have catalyzed the emergence of multifaith communities. All these developments have in one way or another impacted missions in twenty-first-century sub-Saharan Africa. As both Christianity and Islam are spreading and expanding, new approaches to a peaceful and harmonious coexistence have been developed that seem to be hampering the mission of the Church as delineated in the Cape Town Commitment (2010). Hence a missiological assessment of the Cape Town Commitment is imperative for the new decade’s crosscutting developments and challenges. In this article, the author contends that the mission theology of the 2010 Lausanne Congress no longer addresses the contemporary complex reality of a multifaith context occasioned by refugee crises in Kenya. The article will also describe the Somali refugee situation in Nairobi, Kenya, occasioned by political instability and violence in Somalia. Finally, the article will propose a methodology for performing missions for interfaith engagement in Nairobi’s Eastleigh refugee centers in the post Cape Town Commitment era. The overall goal is to provide mainstream evangelical mission models that are biblically sound, culturally appropriate, and tolerant to the multifaith diversity in conflict areas.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: Missiological reflection indicates that mission organizations and churches worldwide are reconsidering the biblical foundations of integrating word and deed in proclaiming the gospel. The Lausanne Movement in its 2010 Cape Town congress, the Micah Network, the Gospel Coalition through its journal Themelios, the World Reformed Fellowship, and several recent missiological publications all address the relationship between words and deeds in the mission of the church. This article attempts to make a contribution to the debate by analyzing key biblical terms in which God reveals himself through the integration of word and deed, calling for a holistic approach in missions, in which words and deeds are not separated when proclaiming the gospel.

Abstract (sommario):
The World Gastroenterology Organization, or OMGE, is a federation of 93 national societies and associations of gastroenterology representing over 50,000 members worldwide. One of its major missions is to organize and present a World Congress of Gastroenterology (WCOG) every four years. Member societies, just as with Olympic committee members, vote after a formal bidding process and the winner hosts the next meeting. We have received that honour and privilege of hosting the WCOG in Montreal in September 2005. With privilege comes responsibilities, and that goes for every man and woman who cares for the future of gastroenterology in Canada.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The International Congress on World Evangelization held in Lausanne, Switzerland, in July 1974 was a seminal event in the history of Evangelicalism. This article considers the significance of the congress as an arena for the emergence of challenges from Latin America and Africa to the social and political conservatism that characterised much of the Evangelical movement in the northern hemisphere. These challenges demanded that Christian mission should be defined as a broader process than evangelism alone, and made their mark on the ‘Lausanne Covenant’, a document adopted by the congress which has had normative status among Evangelicals ever since.

Abstract (sommario):
Most contemporary Pentecostal missiologies advocate a move away from classical Pentecostalism’s historic emphasis on the priority of evangelization (commonly described as the narrow sense of missions). In many ways this move parallels similar missiological perspectives among Evangelicals through the influence of the Lausanne Congresses between 1974 and 2010. In this essay the author argues that Scripture does not emphasize the church’s call to transform the world but the church’s need to be transformed itself within the world as a testimony of God’s abiding presence. Building especially on the work of Paul Pomerville, Johannes Blauw, and Harry Boer, the author offers a fresh take on an old missiology, one in which the church in the age of the Spirit must especially be understood in light of God’s concern for the nations.

Abstract (sommario):
The Le Mans vocational guidance centre (Sarthe) was established in 1922. Shortly after it provided teachers and families with a brochure. Before the second world-war its director implemented the idea of a vocational pre-guidance in primary schools by publishing a guide for teachers. He also appointed committees meant to bring the centre and its partners into close relationship. After the Liberation, its new director followed the same policy by setting up vocational guidance committees. He translated articles into French and did some research work in order to strengthen his action. In 1953, at the international congress of psychotechnology, he dealt with the problem of career advising in relation to secondary education. Then, the general outlines of a career adviser’s action in secondary schools after the Education Act are given. The contacts with teachers are more frequent thanks to staff meetings bringing together teachers and career advisers. In the last part, the author deals with the missions of the information office of the centre and its relationship with the B.U.S. As for advisers, they focus their attention on the first stage of secondary education and are more and more connected with schools. The article sets out the leading ideas which have guided the action of the centre, the difficulties it came up against with the passing years, the evolution of missions, the different stages in the information of pupils and families until new centres were created in the Sarthe.

Franklin, K. J. (Kirk James). "The Wycliffe global alliance - from a U.S. based international mission to a global movement for Bible translation". Diss., University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/32974.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis deals with the complex question of how global Christian mission organizations must learn to function, especially the Wycliffe Global Alliance (WGA). I summarize how the Wycliffe Bible Translators (WBT) began in 1942 as the resourcing organization for the Summer Institute of Linguistics (now called SIL International) and how their mutual founder, American William Cameron Townsend, was influenced by Western mission strategy and conservative evangelical theology. The changing global context is impacting how the missio Dei takes place and this is influencing how mission agencies interact with each other and the church worldwide. This is leading to new paradigms of how mission is conceptualized around the world. The thesis outlines how the changing global context has forced Wycliffe to reevaluate its place in the world because, half a century after its formation, the church has new homes in the global South and East. It follows that as a Western mission, Western resources have decreased and this has shaped how Wycliffe Bible Translators (International) has now become Wycliffe Global Alliance (WGA). However, this goes beyond a mere change of name and has resulted in a type of structure that enables it to better engage with the church worldwide. The thesis also examines the complexity of contextualization in the global environment, noting how different languages and cultures are involved, each with its own rules and subtleties. I show how the shift of the centre of gravity of the church to the global South and East presents new theological challenges for the Bible translation effort and these directly impact WGA. There are many missiological implications for WGA that come from influences in church history regarding the importance of language, the translatability of the gospel, the history of Bible translation and how missional reflection is necessary in various situations. These merge together to provide new implications which are influenced by globalization for mission agencies such as WGA. The thesis also emphasises that WGA is a global mission movement, so I have identified methods of leadership development and structure, all of which are critical to WGA’s effectiveness and involvement in the missio Dei. I show that forming global mission leaders is unique and complex, and how the leaders must embrace a wide variety of qualities, skills and capabilities, especially in responding to greater cultural diversity. Since most leadership principles are culturally bound, this creates obstacles in cross-cultural situations. Therefore, I emphasize that a successful multicultural organization like WGA must learn to focus on both worldwide and local objectives. The thesis outlines how theological, missiological, cultural, contextual and leadership values converge and therefore reshape a mission movement like WGA. My conclusion is that none of these influences can be ignored – all are relevant. Each must be reflected upon in order to provide directions for WGA as it seeks to be faithful to its vision and serve the global church.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper I discuss recent scholarly work on ideology, mostly by Europeans, that exposes a secularist bias in current political theory, invites a nonderogatory concept of religion, and (I argue) justifies more flexible church/state relations. This work involves (1) redefining ideology as any action-oriented ideas, whether destructive or ameliorative, including both secular theory and religion, then (2) drawing on hermeneutical and critical studies of the power/ideology relationship to rediscover a role for ‘utopia’ as a social catalyst for amelioration. I then call attention to the relevance of ‘mission’ to this work. For in both secular and sacred contexts, missions are defined and assigned to individuals or groups to enhance some aspect of the organizing entity’s sense of purpose and possibility. What stands out in each instance is that the sense of mission is not passively epistemic but actively project-oriented, goal-directed. It can be used with reference to any end or goal that is at least implicitly normative and which people seek to attain. A mission moves people, however, only if it is tied to some belief-based social identity which can be interpreted as oriented to that end. A case can be made, accordingly, for accommodating religious views in our political discourse, for they have a history of directing people’s thinking beyond what is to what ought to be, and without them we are ever more inclined to tolerate mediocrity in ourselves and despair in others.

Abstract (sommario):
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Autonomous vehicle navigation, both global and local, makes use of large amounts of multifactorial data from onboard sensors, prior information, and simulations to safely navigate a chosen terrain. Additionally, as each mission has a unique set of requirements, operational environment and vehicle capabilities, any fixed formulation for the cost associated with these attributes is sub-optimal across different missions. Much work has been done in the literature on finding the optimal cost definition and subsequent mission pathing given sufficient measurements of the preference over the mission factors. However, obtaining these measurements can be an arduous and computationally expensive task. Furthermore, the algorithms that utilize this large amount of multifactorial data themselves are time consuming and expensive. Often, it is valuable to make assessments about a terrain with limited information and using similarity with existing terrains without necessarily performing the entire simulation. This paper will investigate how topological data analysis (TDA) can be used to describe ontological features of the collected terrain data and how those features can be used to help navigation of the mission without making assumptions of the mission requirements or operator preferences.</div></div>

Abstract (sommario):
This paper is part of the AEROFLEX project – AEROdynamic and FLEXible Trucks for Next Generation of Long Distance Road Transport. Aim of the project is to develop and demonstrate new technologies, concepts and architectures for complete vehicles, while ensuring that the varying needs of customers are satisfied with respect to the continuously changing operation conditions. These technologies comprise of distributed hybrid powertrains (e.g. electric dolly and/or trailers), advanced vehicle aerodynamics (e.g. active roof and ride height adjustment, gap reducer, side skirts, boat tail, etc.), and smart loading units (e.g. double load floor trailers supported by cargo loading optimization software, multi-modality trailers and horizontal collaboration). The main target of the project is to show that it is possible to improve the efficiency of logistic operations with 18-33%. One of the main challenges of the project is the assessment of the efficiency of the different (combinations of) innovations in real-world applications in a limited timeframe. In order to do so, an innovative assessment approach is used which combines on-road tests of vehicle combinations on public roads with (partial) simulations in different simulation and calculations models. The current paper will focus on the assessment framework that links the on-road tests with logistic use-cases and the Vehicle-in-the-Loop (VIL) testing approach as a means to test physical vehicles in a simulated environment. The assessment method enables full simulation of a vehicle of which only the origin, destination and vehicle specifications are known. It contains of a route profile generator to obtain the route (including speed limit and elevation profile) from origin and destination. This is followed by a mission profile generator to determine the vehicle’s speed over the route. The vehicle model, which contains the different technologies of interest, consequently provides the energy consumption and fuel consumption. The VIL test method allows for measured quantification of fuel consumption and emissions for these real missions, while being fully flexible in vehicle type and set of innovations of interest. The VIL testing approach is developed to evaluate vehicle performance of a truck connected to a transient dynamometer in a climatic altitude test chamber. The truck is driving a real-world route while it is virtually heavier and longer and equipped with for instance an electric dolly. Additionally, the VIL test approach is used for functional testing of the powertrain energy management system between truck and electric trailers. A unique factor in the final technical assessment, is the use of so-called customer use cases. Over 50 companies in the logistics sector are interviewed about their day-to-day business and from these interviews a set of use-cases is gathered that contain a wide variety in logistic concepts, length of routes, multi-modality, road elevation and more. Connecting these real-world driving missions to the unique test facility, the vehicle performance can be evaluated under controlled environmental circumstances while different combinations of technologies can be applied in a systematic, flexible and generic manner.

Abstract (sommario):
Improved numerical tools are required to foster flexible and effective advancement of innovative electrified and highly automated road vehicles. However, research activities concerning vehicle automation are usually decoupled from their counterparts involving vehicle electrification due to both the increased level of complexity and the partitioned organization of automotive OEMs. In this framework, implementing vehicle development approaches involving simultaneously electrification and automation would result beneficial both in facilitating the overall vehicle design procedure and in exploiting most advantage from both the development topics. This paper proposes an optimization-based approach to off-line plan of the longitudinal velocity of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) when travelling as Ego vehicle in a vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) autonomous driving scenario. A parallel P2 hybrid powertrain layout is retained along with the corresponding on-board supervisory controller. A mathematical formulation for the optimal V2V autonomous driving control problem is provided and consequently solved with an optimization method based on dynamic programming (DP). The implemented DP formulation particularly exploits information about the overall longitudinal speed profile of a Lead vehicle in a predefined driving mission to determine the velocity profile of the Ego vehicle. Optimization constraints involve maintaining the inter-vehicular distance value within allowed limits while aiming at minimizing both the magnitude of Ego vehicle acceleration events and the overall Ego vehicle fuel consumption as predicted according to the on-board hybrid supervisory control logic. Simulation results for different driving missions demonstrate that, using the proposed DP formulation, the Ego vehicle can achieve both smoother speed profiles and improved fuel economy by some percentage points in V2V autonomous driving compared to the retained Lead vehicle embedding the same HEV powertrain layout. Urban driving conditions have been identified as the most promising ones both in terms of fuel economy enhancement and passenger comfort improvement by V2V automated driving according to the proposed approach. On the other hand, when the Lead vehicle encounters highway or aggressive driving conditions, remarkable improvements might be achieved only in passenger comfort, while limited saving might be attained in terms of fuel consumption according to the described methodology.

Abstract (sommario):
There is currently a renewal of world-wide interest in hypersonic flight. Vehicle concepts being considered range from cruise missiles to SSTO and TSTO vehicles. The new characteristics of these vehicles are that they will be powered by air-breathing engines and have long residence times in the air-breathing corridor. In the Mach 4-7 regime, waverider aircraft are being considered as candidates for both long-range and short-range cruise missions, as hypersonic missiles, and as high L/D highly maneuverable vehicles. This paper will discuss the potential for near-term and far-term application of air-breathing engines to the above waverider vehicle concepts and missions. In particular, the cruise mission is discussed in detail and attempts are made to compare and contrast it with the accelerator mission. Past criticisms levied against waveriders alleged low volumetric efficiency, lack of engine/airframe integration studies, poor off-design performance, poor take-off and landing capability, have been shown by on-going research to be unfounded. A discussion is presented of some of the technical challenges and on-going research aimed at realizing such vehicles: from turboramjet and scramjet technology development, propulsion-airframe integration effects on vehicle performance, aeroservothermoelastic systems analysis, hypersonic stability and control with aeroservothermoelastic and propulsion effects, etc. A unique and very strong aspect of hypersonic vehicle design is the integration and interaction of the propulsion system, aerodynamics, aerodynamic heating, stability and control, and materials and structures. This first-order multidisciplinary situation demands the ability to integrate highly-coupled and interacting elements in a fundamental and optimal fashion to achieve the desired performance. Some crucial technology needs are found in propulsion-airframe integration and its role in configuration definition, hypersonic boundary-layer transition and its impact on vehicle gross-weight and mission success, scramjet combustor mixing length and its impact on engine weight and, CFD (turbulence modeling, transition modeling, etc) as a principal tool for the design of hypersonic vehicles. Key technology implications in thermal management, structures, materials, and flight control systems will also be briefly discussed. It is concluded that most of the technology requirements in the Mach 4-7 regime are relatively conventional making cited applications near-term, yet offering very significant advancements in aircraft technology.

Abstract (sommario):
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Adoption of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) or battery electric vehicles (BEV) in heavy-duty (HD) commercial freight transportation is hampered by difficult technoeconomic obstacles. To enable widespread deployment of electrified powertrains, fleet and operational logistics need high uptime and parity with diesel system productivity/total cost of ownership (TCO), while meeting safety compliance. Due to a mix of comparatively high powerplant and energy storage costs, high energy costs (more so for FCEV), greater weight (more so for BEV), slow refueling / recharging durations, and limited supporting infrastructure, FCEV and BEV powertrains have not seen significant uptake in the HD freight transport market. The use of dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) systems, consisting of inductive electrical coils on the vehicle and power source transmitting coils embedded in the roadways, may address several of these challenges. An appropriately designed BEV, will absorb energy at highway speeds from these transmitting coils in the road, providing electrical energy to sustain its mission. This has the potential to reduce the onboard energy storage requirements for BEV while enabling significantly longer missions. While still contingent on considerable infrastructure development, this technology has the potential to disrupt the zero emission HD freight transport system by not only lowering the overall total cost of ownership and increasing asset uptime, but also reducing the use of rare earth minerals required to support the deployment of these vehicle systems. This paper presents a study of four use cases (Drayage, Short Haul, Regional Haul, and Long Haul) of HD vehicles comparing the diesel incumbent powertrain against FCEV, BEV with depot charging, and BEV with DWPT charging. By considering the interplay of several technoeconomic factors associated with each of these powertrain options and further considering real world vehicle weight and road variations, a systematic study is conducted to show critical signposts for both single and multi-parameter technology viability. This study also assesses the sensitivity of each factor to the overall TCO changes thus identifying critical areas of further research and development. Finally, by considering the four use cases together a preliminary strategy to introduce DWPT in freight roadway networks is stipulated. Future works will address the specific characteristics and develop this strategy more holistically based on freight volume, road conditions, and other key development factors.</div></div>

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The use of wireless power transfer systems, consisting of inductive electrical coils on the vehicle and the power source may be designed for dynamic operations where the vehicle will absorb energy at highway speeds from transmitting coils in the road. This has the potential to reduce the onboard energy storage requirements for vehicles while enabling significantly longer missions. This paper presents an approach to architecting a dynamic wireless power transfer corridor for heavy duty battery electric commercial freight vehicles. By considering the interplay of roadway power capacity, roadway and vehicle coil coverage, seasonal road traffic loading, freight vehicle class and weight, vehicle mobility energy requirements, on-board battery chemistry, non-electrified roadway vehicle range requirements, grid capacity, substation locations, and variations in electricity costs, we minimize the vehicle TCO by architecting the electrified roadway and the vehicle battery simultaneously. The idea optimizes battery size and chemistry so that the depth of discharge between recharge events and expected life are balanced, thus fully utilizing the energy available throughout the course of the battery system's life. The approach is illustrated by applying it to the I-75 freight corridor, where the framework developed may be expanded and applied to a larger interstate system, expanded regional corridor, or other transportation network.</div></div>

Abstract (sommario):
In Colombia, as well as in the rest of the world, the Covid-19 pandemic has seriously damaged the health and well-being of the people. In order to limit the damage, local and national authorities have had to order large sectors of the population to be confined at their homes for long periods of time. An inevitable consequence of isolation has been the collapse of economic activity, expenditure, and employment, a phenomenon that has hit many countries of the world affected by the disease. It is an unprecedented crisis in modern times, not so much for its intensity (which is undoubtedly immense), but because its origin is not economic. That is what makes it so unpredictable and difficult to manage. Naturally, its economic consequences are enormous. Governments and central banks from all over the world are struggling to mitigate them, but the final solution is not in the hands of the economic authorities. Only science can provide a way out. In the meantime, the economic indicators in Colombia and in the rest of the world cause concern. The output falls, the massive loss of jobs, and the closure of businesses of all sizes have become daily news. Added to this, there is the deterioration in global financial conditions and the increase in the risk indicators. Financial volatility has increased and stock indexes have fallen. In the face of the lower global demand, export prices of raw materials have fallen, affecting the terms of trade for producing countries. Workers’ remittances have declined due to the increase of unemployment in developed countries. This crisis has also generated a strong reduction of global trade of goods and services, and effects on the global value chains. Central banks around the world have reacted decisively and quickly with strong liquidity injections and significant cuts to their interest rates. By mid-July, such determined response had succeeded to revert much of the initial deterioration in global financial conditions. The stock exchanges stopped their fall, and showed significant recovery in several countries. Risk premia, which at the beginning of the crisis took an unusual leap, recorded substantial corrections. Something similar happened with the volatility indexes of global financial markets, which exhibited significant improvement. Flexibilization of confinement measures in some economies, broad global liquidity, and fiscal policy measures have also contributed to improve global external financial conditions, albeit with indicators that still do not return to their pre-Covid levels.
