Abstract (sommario):

Much has been said recently about the decline in both political and non-political civic participation in the United States. Many American religious congregations, however, continue to stand strong as voluntary associations connecting people with the political and civic life in our country. This paper explains the role that religious congregations can play as promoters of civic engagement. Specifically, it describes the mechanisms by which religious congregations can provide what I call civic resources to their members, resources members utilize to participate in other forms of civic activity outside of their congregation. These resources can be broken down into three main categories. Civic skills are the communication and organizational abilities that an individual can draw upon to make participation more effective. Congregations provide opportunities for members to gain experience using such skills when becoming involved in church governance or in organizing church committees to take on special tasks or put on special events. Social infrastructure captures the value of the social networks and organizational resources available to members of a congregation. The tight-knit social community within a church serves as an effective network to spread relevant information or recruit volunteers for any collective activity. Finally, there are a number of psychological resources a congregation can bring to bear on an individual. Oftentimes the religious teachings of congregations encourage members to adopt civic-minded values and attitudes that serve as a strong motivation to participate

Abstract (sommario):
Conflict in religious organizations is certainly not new. Conflict has been implicit in much of the theorizing on religion's social organization and its relationship to social change. Despite the clear and far-reaching implications of conflict for religious organizations, especially congregations, we know relatively little about why these conflicts occur and what they are about. With this project, I answer some basic descriptive questions about congregational conflict by capitalizing on nationally representative data from the National Congregations Study (NCS), and I build on these and other findings to move the study of congregational conflict beyond descriptive facts and toward explanation by asking: Why do congregations experience conflict? Why do congregations argue about some issues and not others? Existing literature suggests several key components to an explanation of congregational conflict: theological orientation, engagement with the secular world, organizational structure, racial diversity and internal change. I test a series of hypotheses and conclude that overall, organizational structure and internal change are most clearly related to rates of conflict in religious congregations. Theological orientation and engagement with the secular world do not show the hypothesized relationships, and it is difficult to evaluate the effect of racial diversity on congregational conflict.

Abstract (sommario):
Religious congregations occupy a unique social space in contemporary American society. Although participation rates have declined since the 1950s, congregations continue to attract more members and resources than any other voluntary form of association. Congregations have also not been immune from the dramatic social and cultural changes in the broader society. These external changes propel many congregations to undertake structural and cultural adaptations in an effort to survive in a changing environment. This dissertation explores the relationship between change and conflict in congregations by studying a population of congregations in a dynamic environment, the American Southwest. Using conflict as the dependent variable in a binary logistic regression model, the research considers the effect on conflict of a variety of changes that occurred in these congregations over a five-year period. Controlling for classic organizational variables such as size and age, the results indicate that changing a congregation's decision-making structure and/or adding or deleting a worship service significantly correlate with conflict. Also, congregational leaders are at greater risk of leaving during or following a conflict. The findings support the assertions of conflict theory that power is a critical variable as well as neoinstitutional arguments that structure has a symbolic as well as a functional purpose in organizations. They also point to the importance of ritual in congregational worship and to the possibility that conflict is more likely when a disruption of ritual occurs. Finally, the findings suggest that leaders have a critical role in congregational change and conflict, although the reciprocal nature of that role (in both initiating change and being held responsible for it) cannot be fully uncovered. More research is needed on the nature of the relationship between worship changes and conflict in congregations, as well as on the role and function of leaders.

Oppenshaw, Derek Leonard. "Conflict resolution and reconciliation within congregations". Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/63030.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The foundational hypothesis to this study is that congregations which have a healthy perception and a greater understanding of conflict will develop more effective responses to conflict that will translate into more effective conflict resolution and reconciliation. The process and sustainability of the development of a missional church, the context of the study, is pregnant with potential conflict. Untamed conflict has the propensity to retard, jeopardise or even destroy the development of a missional church. When conflict arises, it must be understood and dealt with theologically. The inherent problem is that conflict appears to be neither understood nor appreciated sociologically and theologically. This knowledge and praxis vacuum has the potential for conflict to translate into inappropriate or ineffective responses that do not always make for effective resolution and reconciliation. The research focuses mainly on an empirical study based on the four practical theological questions of Osmer (2008). Participants for this study were randomly selected from specific sectors of Methodist congregations in the wider Pretoria area. The research explores congregants’ perceptions, understanding and views of conflict; their responses to conflict; and some felt and observed outcomes of conflict. The presupposition is that the development of the local missional church would be more effective and efficient when the management and process of conflict resolution and reconciliation are well led and well managed. This study confirmed that conflict, despite its normalcy and necessity, carries a negative undertone and is mostly avoided in congregations. This is compounded by the evidence that there is little, if any, theological or scriptural understanding of conflict. There is also no indication that churches intentionally and purposefully educate their members to appreciate and understand conflict. In so doing, churches are harming their innate calling as the glory and manifestation of God’s divine grace through faith communities for the transformation of all peoples. Yet, the church understands the dangers of unhealthy conflict, and on occasion even expects conflict to arise, although deeming it inappropriate. Practical theological discernment is sought as to why this may be so and remedial action is proposed to address the problem of conflict within congregations.

Abstract (sommario):
The problem this study addresses is that the Christian church in the postmodern west is in a condition of zero growth and even decline. Conventional strategies intended to reverse this condition have tended to focus on improved implementation of traditional methodologies of church growth. Despite the application of such strategies the church continues to decline, indicating the urgent need for additional approaches. Practical theology suggests such an additional approach: greater engagement with the local community. Certain churches have been identified whose congregations, acting, it is believed, under the leadership of the Spirit, are engaging their immediate communities in a wide variety of ways often with the result that people touched by the church respond with a new or renewed interest in the Christian faith and in some instances join or rejoin the Christian family. The implication, and the hypothesis of the study, is that widespread application of the practices of such community-engaging congregations, called “holistic” congregations, might have a positive impact in terms of growth in the wider church community. To determine the validity of this implication a small-scale inductive, empirical, effect-to-cause study was undertaken. Combining qualitative and quantitative research methods intended to identify the ethos of those churches that meet the developed criteria of “holistic” churches, as compared to a second group of “non-holistic” churches, the study addresses the question: Is it possible to discover the ethos of holistic churches with a view to reproducing that ethos in other churches? Analysis of the data gathered during the study identifies a number of specific characteristics shared by the holistic churches. In addition to suggesting strategies that may profitably be investigated and implemented by churches that wish to become, or become more, holistic in terms of their outreach ministry, the results also advocate the further study of holism as a possible key feature to the future of the Church.

Abstract (sommario):

This qualitative study investigated the information culture and beliefs within two United Church of Christ congregations in Northeast Ohio. One congregation was Open and Affirming (ONA), and one congregation was not. ONA refers to a congregation's decision to be listed as a place where LGBT individuals—in particular—are welcomed and accepted. Using a purposive sampling technique, 8 focus groups of 4-8 participants each were asked to discuss content derived from three research question areas: participant beliefs, information that participants used to inform these beliefs, and how this information was used.

Analysis found that both congregations espoused the superiority of their beliefs about inclusivity, thus creating a paradox whereby their inclusivity involved excluding beliefs of exclusion. Because the ONA congregation preferred a personal expression of belief, they were more comfortable with the potential divisions caused by this paradox than the non-ONA congregation, which preferred a communal expression of belief.

Analysis also found that most participants relied heavily and placed great authority in information from internal sources, e.g., prayer, meditation, and emotion. The ONA congregation reflected the presence of more unique information, indicating that they approached the Bible and other common religious information critically and with more freedom to come to different conclusions than fundamentalists and biblical literalists.

Despite these differences in belief expression and information type, the analysis found that both groups showed evidence of Chatman's Small Worlds theory. First, participants showed evidence of unmet information needs. Many lacked confidence in the ability to articulate personal beliefs. Second, participants noted the presence of long-term attendees who determined the relevancy of incoming information. Finally, participants tended to guard against disclosing information about personal problems to other congregants, preferring to anonymously seek out answers.

The research highlights the social nature of belief formation and the impact of religious tradition, pastoral sermons, and external information on these beliefs. It contains important implications for pluralistic communication and the social nature of organizational legitimization. It extends the literature on belief formation and information science by developing mid-range theories about the processes by which individuals in religious communities use information to form beliefs.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (DPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 1994.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This is an empirical, qualitative study of racially-mixed urban churches (congregations) as social institutions, which includes a practical-theological perspective. Research was motivated by the rareness of mixed congregations, compared to the profusion of homogenous congregations. My purpose was to uncover social factors which support the formation, maintenance, and functioning of mixed congregations. A New Testament section is included because of the normative value that these texts hold for contemporary Christians and church structures. My theoretical base is informed by history, theology, biblical studies, sociology, and anthropology. The development of relevant aspects in these fields are sketched. Special attention is given to assimilation, pluralism, and multi-culturalism as forms of inter-ethnic interaction based on structure and culture. My methodological base incorporates congregational studies and social-scientific literary analysis. The historical development of both is sketched by means of an overview of relevant literature. The general qualitative analytical social and literary techniques that I apply are indicated, including participant-observation, semi-structured interviews, structured questionnaires, and document-analysis. A social history of South African congregations shows that the ideal of mixed congregations existed since the start, but was gradually repressed by several factors. Some studies of mixed congregations are discussed, and various mixed US and South African congregations are outlined. Three contemporary Johannesburg congregations are introduced, including Johweto, an independent charismatic church in the black city of Soweto; St. Francis Xavier, a Roman Catholic church on the borders of coloured and white suburbs in western Johannesburg; and Central Methodist Mission, an inner-city Protestant church. The Johannesburg congregations are idiographically and empirically analysed in terms of their context, identity, process, and programme. Social factors contributing to their ethnic mix are indicated. The insights from the contemporary research are applied to early Christian congregations in a social scientific reconstruction of the social world of appropriate New Testament texts. The purpose is to discover the role of ethnicity in their composition and functioning, and to show whether ethnically-mixed congregations were normative. I suggest a theory concerning the effects of ethno-cultural factors on the structures and functioning of Pauline congregations between AD 30 and 70. I conclude with a summary of the theoretical and practical implications of the study's results, and an evaluation of goals and methods. Practical strategies are suggested for dealing with commonly indicated difficulties in the formation of mixed congregations. A theory of the influence of social factors on formation is supplied, and a dynamic model of formation constructed. I posit three types of mixed churches according to the processes by which they are formed: contextual, inclusive, or intentional. These are evaluated as formation strategies, and a two-tiered typology in terms of internal structure is also proposed. The types are illustrated with reference to congregations from the US and South Africa. Segregated and integrated congregations are evaluated in theological, social and political terms and I indicate why mixed congregations are preferable. An overall theory of the formation and functioning of mixed congregations is put forward. Assimilation is seen as a contributive cause, but modified where counter-status quo and multi-cultural strategies are employed.

Abstract (sommario):
If the french civil system of the congregatioins (1901) has ceased to be a regime of strangulation to become since 1942 a system of great ability though a legal acknowlegment by the state was maintained, the denial at the conseil d'etat of the free declaration of the congregations has remained. The thesis wants to explain why the religious congregations in 1992 are still deprived of the civil associative common right. The very institutionalized character of the congregational collectivities a fortiori those of the catholic cult - remains in 1992 the predominant reason of this deficit as far as associative freedom and religious freedom in france are concerned. The thesis makes a difference betwenn the declared congregation and the declared association of congreganists. The legal acknowledgment, provided for the congregations, has not been yet received by the holy see, as this latter sticks to its doctrine of the innate right and has always been rather interested in the attempts of solving the congreganist problems starting with the hypothesis of the notion of declared congregation. The thesis relates since the origins the latin catholic canonical law of the "consacrated life" and initiates a study of the noncatholic congregations

Abstract (sommario):
Religious institutions are among the deepest reservoirs of social belonging in America, but what determines whether belonging is cultivated in these institutions? Previous research shows that individuals’ social network composition is a primary predictor of feelings of belonging. However, less is known about how group characteristics condition the influence of social networks on belonging. We use data from the 2001 U.S. Congregational Life Survey and multilevel modeling to examine how organizational characteristics such as group size, in-group network density, and aggregate ideological uniformity moderate the effects of individual social networks on sense of belonging. Results indicate that both structural (network density, church size) and cultural (ideology) characteristics of groups significantly condition the effects of individual social networks on belonging. Smaller group size, network density, and ideological unity cultivate contexts that amplify the relationship between personal networks and belonging.

Abstract (sommario):
The church is not like any other institution or organisation in society. Although the church is primarily invisible and spiritual, it is a visible organisation in the world, and it spans across borders of nations, languages and countries. John Calvin strongly rejected the notion that the church is only a spiritual organisation of which the visible administrative side is downplayed. The fellowship of the church must not only be seen as a mystical relation with Jesus Christ. At the three-yearly synod of the GKSA, which was held in the year 2000, a report was tabled titled 'Preservation and Growth of the Church'. The report requested that all local congregations should develop and implement a congregational strategy that is applicable to their own unique environment. The congregational strategy's main purpose must be to guide the congregation to fulfil its biblical purpose. The fact that people are turning their backs on the traditional churches, including the GKSA who is losing about 2000 members per year, is an indication that it cannot be 'business as usual' for them in future. The purpose of this study is to design a framework for crafting and executing a congregational strategy for the local congregations of the GKSA. The study started with a literature study on the science of strategic management. This provided a theoretical foundation for the framework. Although the strategy of different organisations will differ vastly, the process to follow is much the same. The literature study indicated that the benefits of a well developed and executed organisational strategy are not limited to large profit making organisations, but is also useful to non-profit organisations such as government departments and church congregations. The literature study included a study on the essence and work of a congregation. The purpose of this part of the study was not to be a detailed theological study of the different views and types of church denominations, but only focused on the views of the GKSA. The literature study also tested the applicability of the strategic management theory on the nature and work of a congregation. An empirical study was performed in the congregations of the GKSA, which indicated that the majority of congregations do not have a congregational strategy. The main reason for not having a congregational strategy is that congregations do not have the knowledge and skills available to lead and facilitate the process of crafting and executing a congregational strategy. The empirical study also gathered best practices from congregations that are doing strategic management. These best practices were included in the proposed framework for crafting and executing a congregational strategy. The knowledge gained from the literature and empirical study was combined into a framework for crafting and executing a congregational strategy. This framework can be used by congregational leaders to guide them though their own process of crafting and executing their unique congregational strategy. The research concludes with a recommendation that the Theological School of the GKSA should consider including a course on strategic management in the training syllabus of aspiring ministers. The course should be developed specifically taking into account the background and circumstances of the GKSA, and should not be generic like the course that is included in the Baccalaureus Commercii curriculum. Because of the fast changing environment of the 21st century, the course should also be condensed and be presented to ministers already called in congregations. Because strategic management is a specialised management science, and external Strategic Management consultants tend to be expensive, the research also made the recommendation that the Administrative Bureau of the GKSA consider employing their own Strategic Management consultant for the GKSA with the specific assignment to assist and guide all congregations with their congregational strategy.

Abstract (sommario):
Religious congregations and social work have long been a neglected field of research. Although the number of studies have increased during the last twenty years. With a starting point in the situation in this field of research and in the current public debate in Sweden the focus of this study will be on how Christian and Muslim congregations view cooperating with the municipalities, organizations, the religious community to whom which the congregation belongs and how the congregations view cooperating with other religious communities. Qualitative method of research was used. Representatives of four religious congregations was interviewed; a deacon in a congregation in the Swedish Lutheran Church, a pastor in a congregation belonging to the Mission Covenent Church of Sweden, the chairman in a the board of a Muslim congregation and volunteerleader in another Muslim congregation. For analyzing the transcribed interviews the method of sentence – categorization was used and institutional theory, political opportunity structure and Bauböcks theory of integration was applied. The result showed the degree and form of cooperation varies between the congregations but all four congregations are overall positive towards cooperating with the municipality, organizations, the own religious community and other religious communities.

Fuentes, Riffo Daniela Viviana. "Organizational Change in Volunteer-Based Organizations: Communication Change Strategies in Church Congregations". TopSCHOLAR®, 2015. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1504.

Abstract (sommario):
The current study fills a gap in the communication and management literature by providing additional insight regarding the effective communication strategies used by church leaders during organizational change. The researcher sought to find out how beliefs held by church members predicted their receptivity to change and their intent to leave their organization. Participants from diverse church denominations (N = 208) completed an online survey questionnaire asking them to think about a particular change they had experienced in their current or former church. The results of statistical analysis showed: (a) Church members´ beliefs regarding discrepancy, efficacy, principal support, and valence, positively predicted their receptivity to change, and negatively predicted their intention to leave the organization; (b) beliefs regarding valence were the most relevant for church members to become receptive towards change, and for them to stay in their church during organizational change; (c) among the trust dimensions, benevolence acted as a mediator in the relationship of principal support and valence with intent to leave. This study provides some evidence regarding organizational change in a volunteerbased church context. Practical applications are discussed for church leaders who are implementing change in their congregation. Additionally, future directions are proposed.

Abstract (sommario):
In general, the number of Christian male disciples are less than women disciples in all churches. This phenomenon is prevalent in churches throughout America. C. Eric Lincoln, (Lincoln, 1990), conducted a study where he found that 70% of the adults who attends church are women. A misinterpretation of the patriarchal style of leadership and a lack of empathy for the dilemma of today's men shed great insight into the problem of men not attending church regularly. The misinterpreted patriarchal style of leadership is very confusing too men who want to share the leadership of the church. Women seem to endure this style of leadership better than men, but this probably because women are socialized by the church and society to consider themselves the weaker of the sexes in all phases of life. Empathy from male pastors toward male parishioners is inadequate for several reasons. Males are socialized to be strong and not show true emotions when faced with crises. This leads male pastors to be indifferent to many of the issues that male parishioners face on a day to day basis. Because men have a general inflexibility and fear about expressing their feelings, when these men become pastors and unless they are taught how to empathize with their brothers, they carry these inadequate traits of leadership to the pastoral office.

Abstract (sommario):
CIVINS
CIVINS program thesis
This project focuses on preaching and presiding within the sea services, to serve Roman Catholic sailors and marines and their families. It is intended primarily for Roman Catholic priest Navy chaplains who find, as I have found, that preaching and presiding with Roman Catholics in today's military environment presents a cross cultural challenge. The active duty Navy population on 30 September 2002 was 10% Latino and 4% Filipino. The active duty Marine Corps population on the same date was 13% Latino and 3% Asian/Pacific Islander. The active duty Coast Guard population in March 2002 was 7% Latino and 2% Asian American. These numbers may not seem very high, but Latinos and Filipinos account for a much higher percentage of the Roman Catholic population than of the sea service population in general. In some duty stations, they outnumber European American Roman Catholics.

Nyawuza, Mzwandile Patrick. "The Sacramental Ministry in African Presbyterian Congregations in Pretoria : a Liturgical-Theological Critique". Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/75271.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion feature prominently in the liturgical worship of Protestant churches and the Reformed community in particular. The sacraments make the church different from other social institutions because its rituals are unique and life giving. In a sense, these unique rituals give the church an identity as a community that worships God. Without the sacraments there is no life in the church. The purpose and functions of the sacraments in the liturgical life of the church clearly shows that every church has an access to this fountain of life. The centrality of the sacraments in the church indicates that they are the life line of the ecclesial community. In essence these liturgical rituals are there for spiritual nourishment and growth of the church. With this in mind, this thesis is based on the premise that the administration of sacraments should nourish the people of God. Any sacramental practice that is contrary to the core tenets of the Reformed theology about sacraments demands scrutiny. The purpose of this research then is to probe the sacramental ministry in African Presbyterian congregations in Pretoria.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is a study of churches built for the Church of England, in the dioceses of Manchester, Birmingham and Coventry, in the years 1945 to 1970, with the intention, of examining, first, the circumstances of their planning and building, and, second, the degree to which those building serve the needs of their respective parishes today. The church buildings described in the study have been visited, clergy or churchwardens interviewed, and archival material, relating both to individual churches, and to the diocese as a whole, consulted where it was available. The study comprises three sections. The first is an introduction, which includes a discussion of significant factors affecting the design of post-war churches, including the Liturgical Movement, the Institute for the Study of Worship and Religious Architecture, in Birmingham, and the idealism of the post-war era, both in the nation, and in the Church. The second section comprises examinations of the churches of each of the three dioceses, and a short section on other, significant, buildings, in other dioceses. Each diocesan section includes a description of the diocese in the immediate post-war years, examining the general approach, policies and administrative arrangements established by the respective diocesan authorities to cope with the range of challenges facing it at the time, and then a description of each individual post-war church. The study closes with the third section, the conclusion, which identifies the great changes which took place in the approach to church building within a very short time span, the demographic changes which have subsequently taken place in the majority of areas within which the new churches were built, the advantages and disadvantages displayed by the church buildings and the range of requirements made of their church by parishioners, and, finally, the most important factor, the freedom which the Church finally gave itself to experiment with new forms of worship, new forms of building, and new approaches to the whole work of a parish.
