This work seeks a sense of confrontation through constructing walls against the mountain landscape. The thesis document demonstrates this confrontation through four schemes: a bridging wall with courtyards and tower (70 ft in height), a concrete wall (80 ft in height), a fabric wall (80 ft in height), a steel skeleton wall (120 ft in height), and a solid wall with steel plates (24 ft in height). The surfaces color in all schemes is similar, but material means change with each scheme. All walls are designed to be built on the mountain lake of San Bernardino Pass in Switzerland. The document contains pencil and charcoal drawings, sketches, soft pastels drawings, digital projections, and model photographs.

This investigation presents a model to explain patterns of confrontation within relationships, with a special focus on friendships. Although much research assesses conflict strategies and their corresponding outcomes, few: (a) are theoretically driven, (b) pay any attention to the initial stages of conflict, (c) acknowledge that expressed conflict does not represent the entire spectrum of experienced conflict, or (d) focus on adult friendship conflict. A communication based framework in which to examine confrontation patterns between friends is presented in this investigation. This confrontational model proposes that grievance responses differ according to friends' interdependence level, costs and benefits of confrontation, and communication goals operating in a given interaction. Communication goals included in this study are social influence attempts, relational maintenance, and emotional expression. It is proposed that friends attempt to minimize negative interactions with their friends and therefore primarily use tolerance and avoidance strategies when dealing with grievances. Only when friends are highly interdependent, extremely frustrated, see few costs as a result of being verbally direct, and believe their friend is willing to change will they use confrontational strategies. Fifty-two respondents (24 students, 28 community members) participated in a three week study of grievance management in friendships. Respondents selected a casual to close friend upon which to base their participation in the study. They subsequently completed grievance management measures (assessing their interactions with this particular friend) twice a week for three weeks. Thirty-eight respondents experienced one or more grievances during the three weeks, providing data for the test of the confrontational model. The confrontational model presented in this investigation was partially supported. Results indicate that anticipated negative consequences of confrontation and partners' willingness or ability to change their behavior are related to confrontation. There was a trend toward greater overall interdependence and confrontation, while greater cognitive interdependence between friends was significantly associated with confrontation. The best predictor of confrontation was anticipated negative consequences; fewer anticipated negative consequences was associated with confrontation.

The Labour Party was a prominent political party amongst coloured people for more than twenty-five years. Formed in 1965 to contest elections for the Coloured Persons' Representative Council (CRC), the Labour Party at the outset adopted an anti-apartheid, anti-separate representation and anti-eRe stance. During the first five years of its existence, the party tried to muster coloured support for its policies. Its promise to cripple the CRC by refusing to occupy seats in the council became the rallying call. The Labour Party won a majority of the elected seats in the first CRC election in 1969 but the government nominated progovernment candidates to all the nominated seats, depriving the Labour Party of an overall majority. Thwarted in their bid to "wreck" the CRC, Labour Party members instead took their seats in the council, vowing to destroy it from within. For the next five years the Labour Party pursued a policy of "confrontation. " By using a "boycott" strategy, it not only hamstrung the effective working of the CRC but thwarted the government in other areas of its "coloured" policy. In the 1975 election the Labour Party won an outright victory, giving it the power to cripple the CRC. However, it did not seize this opportunity. Its decision to "govern" in the CRC constituted a decisive step in the change from confrontation to cooptation. The Labour Party's continued support of the CRC drew widespread criticism from supporters and opponents alike. Its leaders tried to hold together a disaffected party and eventually agreed to the dissolution of the CRC in 1980 in an effort to paper over the cracks in party unity, and to forestall growing coloured opposition to the CRC at the next election. In 1983, the Labour Party displayed a decisive shift in its anti-separate representation stance by lending support to the tricameral system. By doing so, it laid itself open to the same charge of collaboration it had levelled at the other CRC parties. This thesis will examine the history of the Labour Party from its formation in 1965 as an anti-government party, to one of cooperation with its erstwhile opponent by 1984.

The purpose of the thesis is to reinterpret Lord Wellesley's forward policy in India, with particular reference to his dealings with the Marathas, and to consider its motivation and the reasons for its failure. Lord Wellesley was the product of his age and environment. He was a colonial with ambitions to play a major role in metropolitan affairs. At the time of his appointment as Governor General of India the most important aspect of metropolitan concerns was the war with France, so that a major element in his policy was the protection of India from French interference. His policy was formed before he reached India, and had as its motivation, not only fear of the French, but fear of aggression by the Indian rulers, with or without French support. This fear derived from a conviction that Indian rulers were totally untrustworthy; only treaties permitting British control of their affairs (subsidiary treaties) could be effective to preserve peace in India. A balance of power between the Indian states, which was thought to have existed five years earlier, had been destroyed. Lord Wellesley succeeded at Mysore and Hyderabad, but failed with the Marathas. His primary target had been the Pune state, which was emphasised in the autumn of 1800 by conditional orders given to Arthur Wellesley to occupy Pune in certain circumstances. These did not occur and he retired. Meanwhile a new treaty had been concluded with the Nizam which was intensely provocative to the Marathas. It involved the British in protecting the Nizam's territory from all comers, including the Marathas who had legitimate claims on the Nizam. Their pursuit of them was liable to lead to war at some point and the British obligation made Lord Wellesley's forward policy towards them irreversible. The Peshwa of Pune was driven from Pune by Holkar and concluded the Treaty of Bassein with the British. This further provocation of the Marathas led to war with Sindhia and the Raja of Berar. The war was short lived and peace treaties were concluded with the Maratha chiefs separately by Arthur Wellesley who had been granted plenipotentiary powers in Western India. His policy was one of conciliation, not as Lord Wellesley's conquest. As a result the British failed to dominate Sindhia. Holkar now arrived on the scene and after abortive diplomatic exchanges war was declared on him. Lake the Commander-in-Chief failed to conquer Holkar, and Arthur Wellesley took no direct part in the war. Sindhia was sympathetic to Holkar and elements of his army, and, later, Sindhia himself, joined him. Lake's failure and Arthur Wellesley's divergent policy led to Lord Wellesley's failure to dominate the Marathas and, therefore, his failure to bring peace to India by conquest.

Cette thèse se concentre sur l’aspect enrichissant de la confrontation entre des positions d’experts. La diversité de ces positions génère une hétérogénéité qui est fondamentalement bonne et génératrice de créativité et d’avancées. Afin de mener une confrontation de points de vue qui soit enrichissante, nous avons choisi d’outiller plus particulièrement la recherche de cette diversité. Mais parmi toutes les formes d’hétérogénéité que l’on peut trouver, la divergence de point de vue est la plus difficile à localiser. Elle est à la fois similarité, parce que l’on parle de la même chose, et différence, parce que l’on n’a pas le même avis dessus. Nous présentons donc une méthode qui s’appuie beaucoup sur l’expert lui-même, qui est plus apte à mener ce « jeu des différences » que n’importe quel algorithme. Nous attachons une grande importance à ce que l’expert retire de la confrontation, plus qu’au résultat lui-même : nous n’essayons pas au premier chef d’intégrer des connaissances. Nous appréhendons la confrontation de points de vue dans un contexte indépendant du corpus, et autant que faire se peut, du formalisme dans lequel le point de vue est exprimé. This thesis deals with the issue of enrichment while confronting expert viewpoints. These viewpoints bring much diversity, which is basically good for generating creativity and advances in Science. Ln order for the confrontation of viewpoints to enrich the expert, we chose to focus our research on the search for this diversity. Indeed, among all forms of heterogeneity that are part of viewpoint matching, locating difference of opinion is one of the toughest tasks. It cornes from the fact that difference of opinion is a difference on the one hand (since the expert have different theories), and a similarity on the other hand (since they talk about the sa me subject). We present here a method for taking advantage of the knowledge of the expert, which is the best "tool" we could find for dealing with this "find the difference game", way better than any algorithm, especially since we focus more on the benefit the expert gains in confrontation than in the result itself: our aim is not to integrale knowledge. Our approach of confrontation does not depend on the documents used, or to a certain extent on the formalism used to express it. We base it on ontology matching methods, using other paradigms to overcome the intrinsic limits of ontology matching. Such paradigms include the computer-aided paradigm, the use of poorly formalized graph languages and human/computer communication

La toile de fond est celle des intrigues ou transparaissent les tensions propres a l'existence. Le heros, un lettre aux ambitions humanistes, regarde le monde qui l'entoure avec suspicion et desir. Face a ce qu'il projette dans le regard d'autrui, support ou rejet, il reste tendu entre l'acuite de son esprit et le chaos de ses sens. Par peur de s'engager, il choisit l'ordre symbolique aux depens de l'existence. Etienne barilier reverse l'intensite de ce vecu douloureux dans les confessions ecrites de ses personnages. Ces narrateurs s'adonnent a des joutes scrituraires entre +emphase; de l'existence passee, et +apophase; critique du discours au present. Avec ironie et desespoir, ils traquent leur memoire, en quete d'une verite essentielle. A travers ces recits, les autobiographes revelent leurs echecs dans le passe, leurs mensonges au present, et leurs espoirs pour le futur. Il passe d'une vison perdue du passe a une renaissance par l'imaginaire, tout en pariant sur les idees, le sacre, la symbolique et la metaphysique. Esprit negateur et nostalgique, il quete l'absolu dans l'art comme dans la vie.

The thesis chronologically presents the slow improvement of relations between Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union, starting with Stalin's death on 5 March 1953, through their full normalization in 1955 and 1956, to the renewed ideological confrontation at the end of 1956. The normalization of Yugoslav-Soviet relations brought to an end a conflict between Yugoslavia and the Eastern Bloc, in existence since 1948, which threatened the status quo in Europe. The thesis represents the first effort at comprehensively presenting the reconciliation between Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union, between 1953 and 1957. It will also explain the motives that guided the leaderships of the two countries, in particular the two main protagonists, Josip Broz Tito and Nikita Sergeevich Khrushchev, throughout this process. It will also provide insight into the reasons behind the collapse of this process in the beginning of 1957. The thesis will establish that the significance of the Yugoslav-Soviet reconciliation went far beyond the bilateral relations between the two countries. It had significant ramifications on relations in the Eastern Bloc and in the global Communist movement, and on the dynamics of the Cold War world at its crucial juncture. The reconciliation had brought forward the process of de-Stalinization in the USSR and in Peoples' Democracies; it had also encouraged the process of liberalization throughout Eastern Europe and had helped Khrushchev win the post-Stalin leadership contest. Finally, the reconciliation had enabled Yugoslavia to acquire equidistance from both Blocs and to successfully embark upon creating, together with India and Egypt the new entity in the bi-polar Cold War world - the Non-aligned movement. The unique contribution of this thesis is that it is based on the research of the Yugoslav and Russian archives; it brings into the Cold War scholarship a great number of previously unresearched documents.

This dissertation contributes to scholarship on consensus-based movement mobilization, institutional change, and field theory by exploring how movements with stigmatized cultural elements develop consensus-based tactics to establish legitimacy and build new fields. Using mixed qualitative methods and an abductive, multi-level approach, I examine how Buddhist-inspired meditators legitimized and diffused meditation to create a new contemplative meditation field anchored in multiple secular fields (science, education, business, healthcare, and the military), largely without confrontation. In Chapter 1, I investigate how this movement assesses the broader multi-institutional environment it is embedded in, as well as movement leaders' strategies to break into new fields. I examine in Chapter 2 how movement leaders adapt and transform Buddhist culture to move it into new secular institutions. I find Buddhist meditation undergoes a secularization process, at the same time as elements of the sacred are infused into secular institutions. Investigating how meditation moves reveals the importance of strategic action in contemporary lived religion, as well as shows how many kinds of institution-specific forms of contemplative culture are produced through interactions with targeted audiences. These diverse forms of contemplative culture enable the movement to recruit and include many different institutional audiences. Lastly, in Chapter 3, I show how the movement "intervention" programs, which resocialize organizational inhabitants to align their lives with contemplative perspectives, help the movement transform their targeted institutions from the inside out.

L'étude se propose de montrer que l'œuvre d'Arendt présente des affinités avec les travaux de la "première" Théorie Critique (Adorno, Horkheimer, Marcuse, Pollock, Neumann) et qu'il est possible d'en rapprocher les lectures. Elle s'oppose à deux interprétations: celle selon laquelle Arendt serait une disciple de Heidegger et selon laquelle Habermas serait le continuateur de la Théorie critique. La confrontation ne vise pas à minimiser les divergences, mais à faire apparaître la proximité des interrogations qui animent les deux démarches. Dans la 1ère partie est abordée la question du rapport qu'elles entretiennent avec la tradition philosophique. Les deux lectures de Marx font l'objet de la 2ème partie, qui a un triple but : dégager la particularité du rapport de la Théorie Critique à Marx (en quoi la référence à Freud est de première importance), mettre en question la critique arendtienne à Marx, et montrer que ces deux lectures se recoupent, puisqu'elles décèlent une philosophie de l'histoire dans l'œuvre marxienne. Dans la 3ème partie sont confrontées les interprétations du nazisme. On suit deux fils conducteurs : d'abord, il s'agit de montrer que la Théorie Critique, loin de réduire le nazisme à un résultat de la dialectique de la Raison, en reconnaît la spécificité. C'est pourquoi on se penche sur des textes qui sont souvent négligés (l'analyse de la personnalité autoritaire par Adorno, celle des camps de concentration par Lowenthal). Puis, il s'agit de démontrer le voisinage des deux interprétations, autour d'une reconnaissance commune de l'effondrement des critères utilitaires au sein du monde totalitaire. On démontre aussi que Béhémoth de Neumann est un précurseur de l'analyse arendtienne, qu'elle en reprend l'idée centrale selon laquelle l'Allemagne nazie est un non-Etat. Dans ce parcours, Benjamin sert de passerelle entre les deux théories, qui se réfèrent à l'idée de l'appauvrissement de l'expérience
The objective of this study is to show that Arendt's work presents certain affinities with that produced by the first generation of Critical Theory (Adorno, Horkheimer, Marcuse, Pollock, Neumann etc. ). The premise of the study is an opposition to two interpretations: the one according to which Arendt is a disciple of Heidegger and that according to which Habermas is the continuator of the Critical Theory. The confrontation does not seek to minimize the differences but to show the closeness of the questions determining the two theories. The critical relationship to the philosophical tradition is the object of the first part. The two interpretations of Marx's thought is the object of the second part, which has a threefold objective: underline the particularity of Critical Theory's marxism (in what the relationship to Freud is very important), demonstrate the problems and limits of Arendt's interpretation of Marx, and show that both readings, their differences notwithstanding, diagnose a philosophy of history in Marx's work. The two interpretations of Nazism is the object of the third part. First, we eek to demonstrate that Critical Theory recognizes the specificity of the nazi order, without reducing it to an inevitable manifestation of the dialectic of Enlightenment (as it has often been interpreted). This is why particular attention is given to texts that are often neglected (Adorno's analysis of the authoritarian personality, Lowenthal's analysis of the concentration camps). Second, it is shown that the two interpretations are very close in that they both recognize the breakdown of utilitarian criteria in the totalitarian order. It is also demonstrated that Neumann's "Behemoth. The structure and practice of national socialism" has influenced Arendt's analysis, which follows the central idea according to which nazi Germany is a non-state. In this trajectory, Benjamin's thought has a mediating role, since both theories adopt the idea of impoverishment of experience

The purpose of this study was to investigate the dynamics of bullying behaviors of parents towards teachers in the workplace-the school. The topic of parent bullying is under-researched, thus, this study seeks to address and examine the gap in the research. The target population of 130 teachers was taken from a Mid-Atlantic State in suburban Excellence High School . Teachers were provided a survey questionnaire to investigate the extent to which confrontational parents try to bully teachers. Teachers (117) served as respondents and used survey methodology to record their responses. An exploratory, descriptive and confirmatory analysis was used to answer the research questions posed. Specifically, this study sought to answer the following five questions: (1) What types of parent bullying behaviors at school do teachers experience? In what form and how often? (2) What consideration has been given to leaving the teaching profession after a parent-bullying episode? (3) What types of parent bullying behaviors are seen as subtle or blatant by teachers? (4) What triggers initiate a parent-bullying incident? (5) Do teachers' experiences of bullying parents vary according to age, gender, ethnicity, grade level and teaching experience? Nine types of parent behaviors and the demographic variables of teachers were compared which included the teacher's age, gender, ethnicity, number of years of teaching experience, and the teachers' current teaching level were compared. Face-to-face survey administration was used to collect the data. Statistical procedures were conducted and included: One Way ANOVA, Cronbach's Alpha Test for Reliability, and Chi Square . Frequency and percentages were calculated to determine the statistical significance of the findings. The findings indicated a statistical significance between physical assault and male teachers. Further, statistical significance was revealed between property vandalism and gender of teacher, ethnicity, and age variables. Teachers are more likely to be verbally abused by parents ho try to confront teachers. Bullying incidents most often occurred on the Internet, classroom, or school office. Triggers that caused confrontation that indicted statistical significance were: (1) student removal of a student from a sports team, (2) had homework issues, (3) showed low grades on a report card, (4) low scores on a test, and (5) low attendance rates. Teachers reported blatant, out in the open, and in your face behaviors to describe the bullying incident committed by parents. However, despite encountering incidents of bullying by parents, teachers did not consider leaving the profession. Almost half of the teachers surveyed reported experiencing some form of abuse directed toward them by a parent.

The recent atmosphere of cooperation in the United Nations (UN) has resulted in many nations, including the Russian Federation, proposing increases in the scope and nature of security missions that the UN should undertake. This thesis will focus on those security arrangements in the UN from the Russian perspective. This thesis will first examine the historical policy of the former Soviet Union and discuss those aspects that relate to the emerging Russian policy in the UN, namely, the rationale behind a cooperative approach and the factors which might return Russia to those confrontational policies of its predecessor's past. This will be followed by a discussion of Russia's assumption of Soviet responsibilities in the UN and the emerging foreign policy debate within the Russian government. This thesis will then highlight the recent Russian security initiatives in the UN which include proposals for strengthening peacekeeping, peacemaking and preventive diplomacy ventures. Finally, an overview of the motivations and impediments behind Russia's renewed emphasis on strengthening security management within the UN will be presented. Current diplomatic activity within the Russian Federation and United Nations clearly illustrates that Russia is seeking, through a cooperative approach, to expand its influence within the United Nations. However, in the future political infighting within the Russian government will determine the extent of this cooperative policy in the UN.... L'un des buts ultimes de la biologie évolutive est de comprendre la dynamique de l'adaptation et les facteurs qui l'affectent. Toutefois, malgré de récents développements, les théories de l'adaptation restent cantonnées à des prédictions qualitatives. L'une des raisons en est que l'on sait mal prédire la relation entre mutation et valeur sélective (fitness). Durant cette thèse, j'ai développé un modèle permettant une telle prédiction. J'ai ensuite validé ce modèle à partir de données empiriques existantes chez des espèces modèles. Cette approche a permis de dégager des tendances générales pour la distribution de l'effet des mutations sur la fitness, et pour sa variation entre espèces et entre environnements. Elle a également permis de proposer des prédictions testables pour la vitesse de l'adaptation dans les études d'évolution expérimentale en milieux contrôlés. J'ai aussi développé des protocoles expérimentaux pour tester mon modèle sur le crustacé Artemia. Bien qu'encore à l'état de préliminaire, cette dernière approche pourrait permettre de tester les théories de l'adaptation au laboratoire mais aussi in natura. Enfin, j'ai étudié l'impact de deux facteurs limitant l'adaptation : la dérive génétique et le système de reproduction, ainsi que l'effet de leur interaction sur la vitesse de l'adaptation. Cette approche a permis d'étudier comment, dans des populations soumises à dérive génétique (y compris en populations structurées), la recombinaison permet d'augmenter significativement la vitesse d'adaptation. La reproduction sexuée peut en retour être favorisée dans ce contexte
One of the main goals of evolutionary biology is to understand the dynamics of adaptation and the factors influence it. Howeve,r despite recent developments, theories of adaptation remain limited to qualitative predictions. On reason for this is a lack of a general analtytic approach to model the relationship between mutation and fitness. During this PhD, I developed such an approach. I then validated the model using the existing empirical data in variousmodel species. This approach allowed to detect some general trends in the distribution of mutation fitness effects, its variation across species and across environments. It also allowed to make testable predictions for the speed of adaptation to a new environment in evolution experiments in controlled conditions. I also developed protocols to test the model in the crustacean Artemia. Although still in a preliminary phase, I suggest that this approach could eventually allow to test theories of adaptationt both in the laboratory and in natura. ' Finaly, I studied the influence of two factors limiting adaptation: genetic drift, and the genetic system, including the effect of their interaction on the speed of adaptation. Ln particular, I showed, using an analytic model, that in subdivided populations, recombination allows to increase the speed of adaptation, and that sexual reproduction can then in turn be favoured by this mechanism

There are conflicting data in the literature regarding the effects of mirror exposure on subjective body-image evaluation. Much of the objective self-awareness research by Duval and Wicklund concluded that the presence of a mirror leads people to evaluate themselves negatively, while other studies have reported contrary findings. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the effects of mirror confrontation on individuals' body image ratings. Subjects were 88 childless, female university students. Using the Eating Disorders Inventory-Body Dissatisfaction subscale (BDS) as a screener, subjects were assigned to either a High Satisfaction group or a Low Satisfaction group. The subjects then completed the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ) in either a Mirror or No Mirror condition. Results suggest that the presence of the mirror had no measurable effect on the subjects' ratings of themselves on the MBSRQ. There was a main effect for satisfaction level, and no interaction was found between the satisfaction level and the mirror condition. Possible explanations for these findings are offered.

This thesis examines the environmental and social consequences of maintaining the artificial divide between thinking and feeling, mind and matter, logos and eros. New Orleans, a city where the natural environment and human sensuality are both dominant forces, is used as a case study to explore the implications of our attempts to impose rational controls on nature - both physical and human nature. An analysis of New Orleans leading up to and immediately following Hurricane Katrina (2005) reveals that the root of the trouble in the city is not primarily environmental, technological, political, or sociological, but philosophical: there is something amiss in the relationship between human rationality and the corporeal world. I argue that policy decisions which do not include the contributions of experts from the humanities and qualitative social sciences - persons with expertise on human emotions, intentions, priorities and desires - will continue to be severely compromised.

Nées dans l'incertitude, les autorités administratives indépendantes semblent aujourd'hui durablement implantées dans le paysage institutionnel français. Le succès remporté par la catégorie juridique ne saurait, toutefois, éluder les questions que posent ces instances vis-à-vis des principes fondateurs de la démocratie moderne. Au regard des schémas ordinaires de la théorie de la représentation, les autorités administratives indépendantes constituent, en effet, une déviation du système démocratique. Pourtant, une conception renouvelée de la théorie politique permet d'établir ces organismes comme de potentielles entités démocratiques. En dehors des rouages traditionnels de l'Etat, la formule institutionnelle révèle la possibilité d'une démocratie enrichie et ressourcée. Reste que, sous peine de ruiner l'originalité de l'objet juridique, les pouvoirs publics et les corps constitués doivent prendre la mesure du phénomène par un ajustement du contrôle juridictionnel et un aménagement du contrôle politique
Despite uncertain beginnings, independent administrative authorities now appear implanted once and for all in the French institutional landscape. However, the success of this legal category must be confronted with the founding principles of modern democracy. By comparison with the dominating theory of representation, independent administrative authorities constitute, in fact, a deviation from the democratic system. Yet a renewed conception of political theory enables these organisations to be considered as genuine democratic entities. Beyond traditional state structures, their institutional configuration reveals the possibility of an enriched and revitalised democracy. Nevertheless, both government and state bodies must take stock of the impact of this phenomenon by adjusting both judicial and political controls; otherwise, the originality of this legal subject could be ruined

Temps et métaphysique. Confrontation systématique entre Bergson et Kant.Bergson désigne Kant comme son adversaire principal pour des raisons essentiellement métaphysiques. Si la théorie kantienne de l’idéalité du temps était vraie, elle empêcherait la réalisation d’une métaphysique telle que Bergson la conçoit. Aussi ce dernier récuse-t-il la thèse centrale de l’Esthétique transcendantale et lui oppose l’affirmation de la réalité substantielle de la durée. Du point de vue de Bergson, Kant affirme l’idéalité du temps parce qu’il le spatialise. En retrouvant la différence de nature entre durée et espace, Bergson rend possible la coïncidence intuitive avec l’absolu et permet à la métaphysique de redevenir, après le criticisme, une connaissance de la réalité en soi. Ce sont donc deux théories du temps antagonistes qui engendrent deux métaphysiques opposées : chez Kant, le temps est une forme homogène et infinie susceptible d’accueillir la totalité des phénomènes et permettant de fonder la science physique dans le temps tout en légitimant le suprasensible hors du temps, tandis que chez Bergson la durée est hétérogène et finie, elle unit de façon immanente la forme et la matière, elle est une création continue d’imprévisible nouveauté qui manifeste la réalité spirituelle dans le sensible. A partir de cette opposition, la question est de savoir si l’esprit humain est circonscrit dans les limites des formes a priori de la sensibilité ou bien, au contraire, s’il est capable d’accéder partiellement à l’absolu en plongeant intuitivement dans sa durée profonde. La primauté de la question du temps est telle chez Bergson et Kant qu’elle détermine l’ensemble de leurs philosophies respectives. Elle constitue le centre névralgique à partir duquel se définit le statut de la métaphysique, et d’où s’articulent l’ensemble de leurs énoncés philosophiques. L’étude des relations entre Bergson et Kant requiert de ce fait une méthode de confrontation systématique qui, partant de la racine philosophique qu’est la question du temps, étudie l’ensemble des oppositions et des points de rencontre entre eux. En outre, pour étudier précisément la manière dont Bergson comprend Kant, il faut allier la méthode herméneutique et la contextualisation historique. Bergson lit Kant à travers le prisme du criticisme français auquel ses maîtres et ses adversaires adhèrent. Cette tradition est ici étudiée et mise en regard de la philosophie bergsonienne. La première partie de ce travail de thèse clarifie le statut de la métaphysique en fonction de la nature du temps. Affirmer l’idéalité ou la réalité du temps a pour effet de changer le statut de la connaissance métaphysique. En séparant le phénomène et le noumène, Kant dresse un voile entre la connaissance et le suprasensible là où, au contraire, l’intuition bergsonienne de la durée permet d’accéder à la réalité en soi et de retrouver la puissance créatrice de l’esprit. La deuxième partie propose une confrontation de l’ensemble de la Critique de la raison pure avec la philosophie de Bergson. Si la théorie du temps a des effets systématiques, alors les thèses de l’Esthétique transcendantale fondent la totalité de l’Analytique et de la Dialectique. Leur refus par Bergson change non seulement la compréhension de l’espace et de la durée, mais aussi le statut de l’ensemble des facultés de l’esprit humain, des principes de la science et celui des énoncés métaphysiques. La troisième partie étudie le rapport de Bergson avec la Critique de la raison pratique, la Critique de la faculté de juger et avec les textes religieux, anthropologiques et politiques de Kant. Après la séparation du sensible et du suprasensible résultant de l’idéalité du temps, Kant cherche à les relier à l’aide du symbolisme analogique. Le continuisme bergsonien permet de faire l’économie de cette solution et de retrouver dans la philosophie pratique, dans l’art et dans le vivant l’expression de l’élan spirituel et créateur de la durée
Time and metaphysics. Systematic confrontation between Bergson and Kant. Bergson refers to Kant as his principal opponent essentially for metaphysical reasons. If the Kantian theory of the ideality of time were true, it would prevent the realisation of metaphysics as Bergson conceives it; so he rejects the central thesis of the Transcendental aesthetics. He opposes affirmation of substantial reality of duration. From Bergson’s point of view, Kant affirms the ideality of time because he spatializes it. By finding the difference of nature between duration and space, Bergson makes possible intuitive coincidence with the absolute and allows metaphysics to become again, after criticism, a knowledge of reality in itself. It is thus two antagonistic theories of time that engender two opposite metaphysics: for Kant, time is a homogeneous and infinite form susceptible to receive all phenomena and allowing the foundation of physical science inside time while legitimating the suprasensible out of time; for Bergson, duration is heterogeneous and finite. It immanently unites form and matter, it is a continuous creation of unpredictable novelty that manifests spiritual reality in the sensible. From this opposition, the question is whether human mind is circumscribed with the limits of a priori forms of sensibility, or, on the contrary, if it is able to partially access to the absolute by dipping intuitively into deep duration. The primacy of the question of time is such in Bergson and Kant that determines all of their respective philosophies, it is their nerve center from which the status of metaphysics is defined, and from which all of their philosophical statements are articulated. The study of relation between Bergson and Kant therefore requires a method of systematic confrontation that, starting from the philosophical root that is the question of time, studies all oppositions and meeting points between them. Moreover, to study precisely how Bergson understands Kant, it is necessary to combine hermeneutical method and historical contextualization. Bergson reads Kant through the prism of French criticism to which his masters and his opponents adhere. This tradition is studied here and compared to Bergsonian philosophy. The first part of this work clarifies the status of metaphysics in term of the nature of time. To assert the ideality or reality of time has the effect of changing the status of metaphysical knowledge. While separating phenomenon and noumenon, Kant draw a veil between knowledge and the suprasensible, where, on the contrary, Bergsonian intuition of duration gives access to reality in itself and to rediscover the creative power of mind. The second part proposes a confrontation of all of the Critique of Pure Reason with Bergson’s philosophy. If the theory of time has systematic effects, then the theses of the Transcendental Aesthetics ground the totality of the Analytics and the Dialectics. Their refusal by Bergson changes not only the comprehension of space and duration, but also the status of all faculties of the human mind, the principle of science, and the metaphysical statements. The third part examines Bergson’s report with the Critique of Practical Reason, the Critique of Judgement, and Kant’s religious, anthropological and political texts. After separation of the sensible and the suprasensible resulting from the ideality of time, Kant seeks to connect them with the help of analogical symbolism. Bergsonian continuism permit to make the economy of this solution and to find in practical philosophy, in art and in biological life, the expression of spiritual and creative impulse of duration

This thesis is an examination of the fictional works of J.M. Coetzee to date. By focusing my gaze upon either the lack of encounter or the encounters between the 'Self' and the 'Other', I explore the relationship between confrontation and the fluid formation and erosion of identity. This exploration takes place against a dual background: the history of the apartheid government in South Africa, the legacy of oppression and the post-apartheid opportunities and challenges; and Coetzee's own acknowledgement of complicity with the past and commitment to a reconciled future. This study not only examines a broad range of criticism on Coetzee but also provides an integrated response to Coetzee's own writing, both fictional and nonfictional. A crack or flaw is revealed in the identity of each of the main characters in the texts. These aporias resist interrogation and establish what I perceive to be a metafictional objective. The limitations of rational engagement are eloquently represented in Coetzee's novels in the presence of the suffering body. It is the aim of this thesis to trace a trajectory which begins in this metalingual space and leads to a metaphysical challenge to Western philosophical tradition. On close textual scrutiny of three of the novels: In the Heart of the Country, Age of Iron and The Master of Petersburg, I have identified widening cracks in the identities of the protagonists. Using a metaphor of leakage, it is my thesis that these gaps offer creative opportunities of sharing which dissolve judgement and allow for imaginative understanding of otherness. This study is then read back into Coetzee's world. It reaffirms the significance of his voice locally and globally, both in the academy and society. I concur with most recent comment that Coetzee's fiction transgresses critical containment and offers metafictional extension to post-colonial theories. This thesis synthesises some of this current debate. The ethical implications of his work are also extended in this thesis, by honouring his commitment to self-scrutiny throughout the novel sequence and in his personal confession in Boyhood: Scenes from Provincial Life. In the specific narratives of his characters and the stories from his own past, he provides fragments of hope which transcend the confines of all discourse. I conclude that his example invites and encourages a brave response.

The collapse of the Soviet Union and the rise of the United States to dominance marked the start of a new era in international relations. The need to study accommodation as a security strategy in the developing world stemmed from this major development. In this context, this thesis attempts to add to the growing literature on accommodative strategies by analysing the dynamics of accommodation in protracted conflicts in the developing world. The specific case selected in the search for insights is the evolution of Syrian policy towards Israel in the post-Cold War era. Three instances of attempted accommodation are studied: the Madrid Peace Conference (1991), the Wye Talks (1995), and the Shepherdstown Talks (1999). This thesis argues that the main explanatory factors for accommodation in this case are to be found in the external politico-military sphere. On the objective level, the role of powerful third parties and the changes in the opponent's policies particularly stand out. On the subjective level, external politico-military concerns, in the desire to avoid potentially permanent losses, appear to be the prime generator of accommodative moves.

Cities offer a platform for cultural, social, physical and economic co-existence and conflict. Many traditional cities of India, which were conceived on the basis of relative autonomy of the existing societal structure, got transformed in to complex, fragmentary patterns of urban development due to their failure to support continuous population pressure and new trends of urbanization. One of these cities, Shahjahanabad (commonly known as Old Delhi), stands out as one of the perfect examples. The walled city of Shahjahanabad initially evolved on the basis of formal geometries of axial planning, and later got transformed in to a chaotic hub of complex form; initially due to the conscious neglect by the British colonialism and later due to endless problems generated by human immigration. Although, the walled city is known for its historical significance due to numerous architectural monuments, the indigenous settlement is tabooed as "Old Delhi" due to its persistent socio- cultural patterns that isolate the traditional core of Delhi from rest of the city structure. Nonetheless, the walled city of Shahjahanabad is characterized by its introvert nature of public activities bolstered by specialized bazaars and indigenous neighborhoods (Mohallas) structured around religious sanctuaries.
(cont.) Although the traditional core is known for its local economy, the inner city continues poses serious threats of inner traffic congestion, excessive commercialization. Though there have been numerous efforts to decongest and revitalize the traditional core, all the efforts seemed too shortsighted to capture the genesis of all the problems; the problems which exists beyond the city peripheries, to the largely urban and economic growth of the city. The thesis tries to address the inner city issues and problems of the walled city of Shahjahanabad, which are largely because of its separation, and isolation from the rest of city growth. On the basis of problem analysis the research argues that the problems of the historic core need not follow "city revitalization" process, but needs to adopt city "integration process", which would not only provide important city services through urban design interventions, but also provide solutions to many inner city problems. The growth pattern of Shahjahanabad exhibit various historical layers, changes over the period of time due to shifting and concentration of forces, which in turn has resulted in the fragmented landscapes along its outer peripheries.
(cont.) The thesis considers these spaces as important transitional spaces, which needs to be redeveloped in order to integrate segregated core of Shahjahanabad in to a cohesive center of National Capital Region (NCR), Delhi. The thesis poses a larger question of how citywide planning strategies and macro level urban design interventions can revive the traditional core of Shahjahanabad, the city cores which has faced tremendous pressures of traffic congestion and disruptive land use patterns.

This thesis is a study of the causes of "Konfrontasi" or Confrontation, the low-intensity war waged by the Republic of Indonesia, under the leadership of President Sukarno, against the Federation of Malaysia, which became independent in 1963. The Confrontation lasted between 1963 and 1966. The thesis compares three categories of hypotheses or arguments for its causes - threat, ideology, and domestic politics - and evaluates each type of argument in tum. The "threat" argument claims that Malaysia posed a security threat to Indonesia, and that the Confrontation was the outcome of a security dilemma between both states. The "threat" of Malaysia has some substantive elements necessary to justify Indonesian aggression, but it is shown to be largely an exaggerated claim, and does not provide a sufficient motive for the conflict. The "ideology" argument claims that the Indonesia Confrontation was driven by the ideology of the Indonesian Revolution and the central role of Indonesia in leading a struggle of New Emerging Forces against the Old Established Forces of neo-colonialism, colonialism and imperialism. It is shown that this argument has more substance than the "threat" argument, since Indonesian ideology traces its existence independently to earlier Indonesian historical experience, and Confrontation could not have been rationalized without recourse to ideological principles. However, this thesis also shows how the "ideology" hypothesis for Confrontation is over-determined, as Indonesian ideology did not necessarily make Confrontation an inevitable and necessary outcome. Ideology was necessary, but insufficient for motivating the decision to confront Malaysia. Finally, the "domestic politics" argument draws its claims from the idea that the Indonesian Confrontation was a "diversionary war" against the Malaysia, where the latter filled the role of "scapegoat," "bogeyman" or "safety valve." According to this argument, the Confrontation was started in order to contain serious internal disunities in the Indonesian government, most notably between the army and the ascendant communist party, and to unite these conflicting elements in a nationalist cause. This thesis finds the greatest evidence and theoretical support for this "domestic politics" explanation of Confrontation, and finds this account to be the most consistent and satisfactory argument.

Les dérogations au droit exclusif de l'auteur sur son oeuvre se classent en exceptions et limitations, c'est-à-dire respectivement en retranchements internes et externes au monopole. Le défaut d'acceptabilité d'une norme dont l'application au cercle de famille serait contraire à la raison fonde la limitation en faveur de la représentation privée, laquelle est une situation juridique émanée de la liberté d'agir. La liberté d'expression justifie la courte analyse, la citation, la revue de presse, la parodie, le pastiche et la caricature, ces limitations partageant d'autre part la qualification d'intérêt légitime juridiquement protégé avec l'exception de copie privée. Cette exception doit trouver justification dans la maximisation des utilités retirées par l'auteur et le copiste. Cela suppose de la part des intéressés un changement significatif dans la perception de l'exploitation des oeuvres et leur utilisation par le public, afin de mettre cet intérêt légitime au service de l'optimisation du droit. Telle n'est pas l'approche de la loi du 1er août 2006. Conjuguant sous l'égide d'une nouvelle autorité administrative indépendante la consécration des mesures techniques de protection et le maintien de la copie privée, le nouveau système apparaît comme un régime de transition. Quoiqu'une solution de compromis statique telle que la licence globale ait été heureusement écartée, il est regrettable que des modèles alternatifs novateurs n'aient pas été envisagés. Derogations to authorship's rights may be classified into exceptions and limitations, that is, internai or external derogations to the legal monopoly. The lack of acceptability of a rule which enforcement in the family area would be contrary to reason grounds the limitation in favour of private play of the work. This limitation emanates from freedom of action. Free speech justifies short analysis, quotation, press review, parody, pastiche and caricature, these limitations sharing with the exception for private copy the nature of juridically protected legitimate interest. Private copy itself finds justification in the maximisation of the utilities gained by the author and the copyist. This requires from ail parties a significant change of focus about works's management and their use by the public. Such isn't the approach taken by the new 1st august 2006 law. Granting both the use of digital rights management devices and the benefit of private copy, the law seems to be a transitory system, placed under the care of a new independent administrative authority. Whereas a static comprise such as global licensing was thankfully discarded, it is unfortunate that alternative distribution models weren't taken into account. Notably, superdistribution harmoniously integrates new copy technologies into the exclusive right's orbit

Over the two decades since the fall of the Soviet Union, Russian society has continued to rely upon Soviet history for national pride and identification. Critics have voiced concerns over this reliance, arguing that the prevalence of symbols from Russia’s authoritarian past hampers Russian democratic development and has led to a rehabilitation of Stalinism. This thesis argues that analysis of the relationship between Russia and its Soviet past has more often than not existed in a contextual vacuum. It seeks to rectify this situation by contextualizing the Kremlin’s policy towards its uses of Soviet history. It argues that Soviet and Russian national identity are closely intertwined, making a condemnation of and total separation from the period impossible. It argues that the incorporation of Soviet symbols into the modern Russian Federation has been a policy of pragmatism, seeking to maintain ideological unification in a country lacking a national identity and social divided after the 1991-2000 decade of transition. It works to show that widespread Soviet rehabilitation has not occurred and where nostalgia exists, its nature is benign. The thesis illustrates that important changes have occurred in the Kremlin’s policy towards the Soviet Union under President Dmitri Medvedev, working upon the state consolidation achieved under Vladimir Putin and heralding a more critical stance towards Russia’s past.

Ce travail prend pour objet d’abord de montrer que la pensée politique et national-socialiste de Heidegger est le vrai point d’appui de son anti-cartésianisme. Pour cela, je défends la thèse selon laquelle Heidegger a vu dans le national-socialisme une puissance de détruire la rationalité et tout ce qui se fonde sur le cartésianisme, et qu’il a considéré cette « destruction » comme métaphysiquement nécessaire à une « nouvelle expérience de l’être ». Ensuite, je me propose de lire Descartes à l’encontre de Heidegger. La pensée de Descartes, qui est celle de la sagesse humaine, s’oppose tant à la pensée de la donation ou de la technè (soit théologique, soit phénoménologique, soit ontologique) qu’à la pensée national-socialiste de Heidegger qui se fonde sur l’« absolutisme de l’être ». Enfin, je soutiens que la nécessité de la défense de l’humanité nous exhorte à relire la philosophie de Descartes. En effet, celle-ci a montré la voie à suivre pour qui aspire à la liberté humaine affranchie de tout absolutisme, et à une politique ou une société qui recherche un accord entre des idées différentes sans détermination ontologique préalable ni norme préétablie
The first object of this dissertation is to show that Heidegger’s anti-cartesianism is based on his political and national socialistic thought. For this purpose, I defend the thesis that Heidegger saw in the National Socialism a power to destroy rationality and all that is derived from the Cartesianism, and that he regarded this « destruction » as metaphysically necessary for a new « experience of Being ». And then I propose to read Descartes against Heidegger. Descartes’ Philosophy is opposed not only to the thought of « donation » or technè (either theological, or phenomenological, or ontological) but also to the national socialistic thought of Heidegger, which relies on the « absolutism of Being ». My final thesis is that Descartes’ philosophy showed a way toward human being’s liberation from every kind of absolutism and toward a politics or a society, which seeks an agreement between different opinions without ontological precondition or preestablished norm

Inspirée par une démarche compréhensive, la méthodologie de recherche oscille entre participation observante et observation participante.Évoquer le traitement de la délinquance des jeunes, en refusant de lui concéder tant une « vision objectivante » qu’une « vision subjectivante » des philosophies politiques mises en oeuvre au sein de ces établissements nous a conduit à rendre compte d’un dynamisme qui se nourrit fort logiquement des confrontations et des courants parfois contradictoires et qui permettent ainsi de mettre en évidence d’autres formes de rapports entre l’individu et l’Institution. Reconnaissant à la philosophie politique d’un programme l’oeuvre des acteurs et leur capacité à s’accaparer des procédures et à les réinterpréter, l’analyse révèle un dynamisme au cours duquel certains acteurs sont susceptibles de suivre un processus de construction ou de reconstruction de sens de leur propre implication à partir de ce qu’ils croient juste pour l’action.En définitive, l’inflexion néolibérale de la politique judiciaire, en France, que Francis Bailleau et Yves Cartuyvels (2007) assimilent à une décivilisation du fait de la modification du contexte économique, social et culturel sous l’influence de la domination de politiques économiques néolibérales laisse transparaître un processus plus large de subjectivation. By comparing the practices of juvenile delinquency treatment in France to those of the United States, this research explores a part of a well-known social phenomenon, the Americanization of judicial policies in France and in Europe.Through the example delinquency treatment in the juvenile facilities, this research analyses the logics and modalities of practices in six institutions (three in the United States and three in France). Inspired by a comprehensive process, the research methodology oscillates between observant participation and participant observation.To evocate the juvenile delinquency treatment, by refusing to grant them both the “objectivizing approach” and the “subjectivizing approach” of political philosophies implemented in the institutions, has led us to grasp the logical dynamism strongly fueled by the sometimes contradictories confrontations and opinion, this allows also to uncover other forms of relationship between the individual and the Institution. Accounting a program political philosophy, the work of actors and their capacity to monopolize and to reinterpret procedures, this analysis reveals a dynamism during which some actors are likely to come across a construction or deconstruction process for the meaning of their own implication, departing from what they believed right for their actions.Definitely, the neoliberal inflexion of the judicial policies in France, analyzed by Francis Bailleau and Yves Cartuyvels (2007), as an decivilization due to the modification of the economic, social and cultural context under the influence of dominating neoliberal economic politics, showing trough a bigger subjectivation process. COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DO PESSOAL DE ENSINO SUPERIOR
Este trabalho tem como objetivo estudar as vozes discursivas envolvidas no ensino de gramática da língua portuguesa no contexto escolar: a voz do sistema educacional, de instituições escolares, de professores, de alunos e da família. O estudo dessas vozes que compartilham o mesmo universo discursivo e das concepções que expressam sobre questões relacionadas à gramática foi feito a partir das noções de voz, dialogismo e polifonia de Bakhtin (1981, 2000) e das contribuições de vários estudiosos a respeito do ensino de língua portuguesa (Bagno, 1999, 2002; Geraldi, 1987, 1996, 2002; Perini, 2001; Possenti, 1996, 2002). O corpus principal da pesquisa compõe-se de dados do discurso oral, tendo sido gravadas e transcritas 52 entrevistas, com professoras, alunos e mães de alunos de 5a a 8a série de duas escolas, uma particular e outra municipal. Uma vice-diretora e uma coordenadora foram entrevistadas, representando as duas escolas. O texto dos Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais (PCNs) para a língua portuguesa foi anexado ao corpus coletado para esta pesquisa, buscando-se identificar, através deles, a voz do sistema educacional. O confronto de vozes foi feito a partir de cinco temas que afloraram dos dados: ensino de gramática, conteúdos, finalidades, modos de ensinar/aprender e variação lingüística. Investigamos cada uma das vozes discursivas de modo a perceber como o enunciado de uma voz reflete o enunciado de outra, enfatizando os aspectos em que tais vozes ecoam simultaneamente. Esse confronto de vozes nos possibilitou fazer a descrição e análise de diferentes percepções quanto ao ensino de gramática; identificar as contribuições das novas teorias lingüísticas incorporadas ao ensino de língua portuguesa; e verificar que as concepções de língua, gramática e ensino de língua direcionam o fazer pedagógico e que, para os alunos, o sucesso do ensino está relacionado ao modo como este é implementado em sala de aula.
This research investigates the discursive voices involved in the teaching of Portuguese grammar in school contexts: the voice of the educational system, schools, teachers, students and families. The study of these voices which share the same discursive universe, as well as the conceptions they express about grammar, was based on Bakhtin`s (1981, 2000) notions of voice, dialogism and polyphony and on the contributions of research work about Portuguese language teaching (Bagno, 1999, 2002; Geraldi, 1987, 1996, 2002; Perini, 2001; Possenti, 1996, 2002). The main corpus of this study is composed of spoken discourse data that were recorded and transcribed. Interviews (N=52) with teachers, students and student mothers from 5th to 8th grades were conducted in two schools, a private and a public one. A vice-director and a coordinator were interviewed, representing each school. The text of the National Curriculum Parameters (PCNs) for the Portuguese language was added to the corpus in order to represent the voice of the educational system voice. The confrontation of voices is developed around five themes that emerged from the data: grammar teaching, contents, purposes, ways of teaching/learning and linguistic variation. We investigated each discursive voice in order to check how the discourse of a voice reflects the discourse of another voice, emphasizing the aspects in which such voices echo simultaneously. This confrontation of voices allowed us to describe and analyze the different perceptions related to grammar teaching; to identify the contributions of new linguistic theories to Portuguese teaching; to verify that language, grammar and language teaching conceptions affect pedagogic practice; and to realize that, for students, teaching success is related to the way this practice is implemented by teachers in the classroom.

Tratando-se de homens e mulheres no contexto da mentalidade moderna, surge a indagação: como harmonizar a afirmação de um Deus Todo-Poderoso com a realidade do sofrimento e do mal, salvaguardando a autonomia do ser humano e do mundo? Através de três teólogos contemporâneos, Andrés Torres Queiruga, Jürgen Moltmann e Jon Sobrino, buscamos responder a esse questionamento, enfatizando a contribuição de cada um dos autores estudados, percebendo as lacunas e debruçando-nos sobre as críticas para completar, enriquecer e aprofundar suas reflexões. Nosso estudo parte de uma questão pastoral, refletida de forma teológico- sistemática, em vista de uma práxis cristã coerente para erradicar, amenizar e/ou integrar o sofrimento e o mal.
Suffering and evil always raise a series of recurring questions. In dealing with man and woman, in the context of modern mentality, there arises an inquiry: how can we harmonize the affirmation of an All-Mighty God with the reality of suffering and evil, safeguarding the autonomy of the human being and the world? In dialogue with three contemporary theologians, Andrés Torres Queiruga, Jürgen Moltmann and Jon Sobrino, we try to deal with this questioning, emphasizing their contributions, detecting lacunas, and discerning the critiques in order to complement, enrich and deepen their considerations. Our study departs from a pastoral question, analyzed in a systematic-theological way, in order to establish a coherent Christian praxis which seeks to erradicate, ease and/or integrate the suffering and evil.

CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO
O foco deste trabalho é a vida pública de Pedro Ernesto Batista, interventor e prefeito da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, na primeira metade da década de 1930. Nossa hipótese sugere que a combinação de difusão escrita e falada- através do uso do rádio como instrumento aglutinador e irradiador de propaganda doutrinária- foi de fato inovadora e anterior a aplicada no Estado Novo. Grande parte das idéias que compunham o que se designou posteriormente como trabalhismo também fora antecipado pela sensibilidade de retórica e ação da liderança de Pedro Ernesto que aperfeiçoara sua imagem popular de médico bondoso e voltado para o atendimento aos pobres com o uso do rádio e de jornais de grande tiragem. Em sua campanha para a prefeitura de 1934 e no exercício deste cargo,tornou-se um dos primeiros exemplos de político carismático preocupado com as condições de vida e com os interesses da população urbana, em especial dos trabalhadores. Este tipo de liderança e prestígio foi sem dúvida o alimento de perseguições que passou a sofrer no bojo do combate ao anticomunismo desencadeado a partir de 1935, que culminaria com sua prisão e afastamento da prefeitura. Sua prisão não significou, no entanto, o fim da força de sua imagem pública. Os consensos e dissensos simbólicos e a força de sua memória pública desafiaram até mesmo a ditadura de Vargas.
The focus of this study is to analyze Pedro Ernesto Batista`s public life; who was Rio de Janeiro`s major at the first half of the 30`s. Our hypothesis suggests that the combination of written and spoken communications vehicles - through the using of the radio as an agglutinant and powerful instrument of doctrinaire propaganda - it was, in fact, innovating and previous to the tactics used during the denominated "Estado Novo" (The new State).Most of the ideas used in the process of what has been named "trabalhismo" (labourism) was also anticipated by Pedro Ernesto`s sensible speech and leadership action. He improves his image as a kind and popular doctor dedicated to the attendance of the poor population, using the radio and the most extended newspapers to spread this profile.During his politic campaign for the election to the City hall in 1934 and later as while as working as major in this equivalent period, he became one of the firsts examples of charismatic politician, always caring about the urban population life conditions and interests, specially the workers.This kind of leadership and prestige caused, certainly, the prosecutions that he suffered during the bulge of the anticommunism persecution happened in 1935; wich culminated with his arrest in prison and destitution as major.However, being arrested didn`t meant the end of the powerful of his public image; the symbolic consensuses and dissents, plus the powerful of his public memory had defied even though the Vargas dictatorship.

Cette thèse sur Spinoza et Calvin prend son départ dans le souci d'éclairer le "Traité théologico-politique" de Spinoza à partir de son contexte calviniste. Ce travail met en évidence l'intérêt des rapports proprement intellectuels entre spinozisme et calvinisme, notamment en ce qui concerne l'interprétation de l'Ecriture et la théologie, y compris dans leur implication politique. La référence au modèle biblique pour repenser l'Etat, la critique du libre-arbitre, l'exigence de lire l'Ecriture en se référant à elle seule ("sola scriptura") sont autant de thèmes qui font voisiner les deux doctrines. La question majeure est de savoir dans quelle mesure ce voisinage théorique est possible entre deux pensées par ailleurs si différentes, l'une construisant un système fondé sur l'immanence, l'autre affirmant au contraire la transcendance absolue de Dieu. La confrontation s'articule autour de deux parties. La première étudie la question politique : les fondements de l'Etat, les relations entre droit naturel et droit positif et l'analyse du rôle de la raison chez Calvin. La deuxième partie confronte la prédestination calviniste et la nécessité spinoziste, dans un développement sur les règles spinoziennes de lecture de l'Ecriture sainte, notamment à la prééminence chez lui, de l'Ancien Testament, aux thèmes de l'élection et de l'histoire, au statut des prophètes, de Moïse et du Christ, comparés aux conséquences chez Calvin du principe de l'immutabilité de la loi divine. This thesis on Spinoza and Calvin starts its beginning in the concern to light up Spinoza's theological-political treatise from its Calvinist context. This work focuses the interest of the intellectually relationships between spinozicism and calvinism, mainly concerning the interpretation of the Scriptures and theology, including in their political implication. The reference to the biblical pattern to rethink the state, the criticism of the demand to read the Scripture referring to itsel ("sola scriptura") are the many topics which link the two doctrines. The major question is to know how that theoritical neighbourhood is possible between two thoughts which are so different somehow, one building a system based on the immanence, the other on stating, on the opposite, the absolute ascendance of God. That confrontation articulates around two components. The first one studies the political matter : the foundation of the state, the relation between the natural and positive rights and the analysis of Calvin's role of reason. The second component makes a confrontation of the Calvinist predestination and the spinozicist necessity, in a development on the spinozicist rules of the reading of the holy scripture, mainly at the preeminence for him of the old testament, on the topics of election and history, to the statutes of the prophets, of Moses and of Christ, compared to the consequences at Calvin's of the principle of immutability of the divine law. Calvin fits into into it revising it in the theological tradition, whereas Spinoza considers the same question relying on Descartes's concepts
